that for that that for that goes black hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show and hopefully I did not let that go uh dark too long um um I usually get so I'm at the computer like which is right next to me and um when I get caught up in something I'm periodically looking back at the screen but sometimes I'm caught up in something I'm like oh I got to figure this out real quick and then of course that's when the film ends when it has sound then I get a cue I can usually hear uh when they're wrapping up or I can hear the um the outro music and that lets me know like okay we're ready all right uh it's Black History Month and I've been trying to show stuff uh that is related to that uh and this one is interesting this is from the war department which will tell you how old it is uh and this is about uh negro colleges in Wartime negro of course is an outdated term but it's interesting they the war department recognizes the importance of um educated blacks uh and um here we [Music] go progress through education and industry has a new meaning today to progress we must win this war to win this war we must have machines and the brains to direct these instruments of warfare we need the trained minds of millions of Specialists our American colleges and universities are responding to the call for trained Manpower education is speeded up courses are being geared for war like many other American colleges Tuskegee Institute in Alabama has been graduating qualified flyers for some time United States Army Air Forces stationed at tusk's Fields hold classes on the campus to teach the fundamentals of Ground School Tuskegee shops prepare students for jobs in aviation plants the work of Dr Carver is well known while at Tuskegee he has contributed much to the science of nutrition and is now using his talents and his knowledge in the war effort other Tuskegee scientists are also working to improve diets at home using an improved process these scientists get more alcohol from the plentiful sweet potato than ever before many courses like this Automotive Maintenance class are given to women who learn to fill jobs vacated by men gone to [Music] war Prairie View one of the state colleges of Texas is designing courses to supply trained men and women to the increasingly technical fields of industrial and military service in the agriculture Department students study the operation and maintenance of farm equipment methods of increasing important farm products and the study of animal husbandry are part of this program a forging class learns how to make machine parts and tools so difficult to get in Wartime many will get jobs in war plants well equipped machine shops in the mechanical Department teach these young men how to make the materials so vital in our war effort today the demand for trained Specialists is increasing jobs are opening in all parts of the country and these college departments help to meet the shortage of Manpower colleges everywhere are adding new courses for war training and are putting new emphasis on old ones for example here at Howard University located in Washington DC this class in mechanical designing trains men and women for jobs in the plants that make our tanks guns and [Music] machines this meteorology class teaches future Flyers Celestial navigation the science that guides our planes to their objectives and safely home again many Laboratories are now specializing on war materials and classes like this teach students the chemistry of powder and explosives to train them for positions in munition Plants testing machines try the explosive force of new powers Howard University Medical School has speeded up training to furnish doctors and nurses for the fighting forces one of the country's leading authorities on blood plasma shows students how to determine the gravity of plasma to be used in the war zones in the College of liberal arts this class studies the economics of War many graduates fill jobs in the accounting Departments of War plans and government agencies Hampton Institute located on the banks of Hampton Roads Virginia is practically on a 24-hour basis training hundreds of War workers the president's home was an old plantation house here one of the country's great Educators welcomes foreign students who are sent to learn American customs and culture students studying building construction and architecture built most of the buildings on Hampton campus one of the special War courses is in radio operation and construction here students learn to operate communication centers and thus prepare for specialized duties with the Armed Forces Hampton's War program is more than that of Trades here a class in chemistry assists an instructor who is doing much research in the development of new war Materials Science students are preparing themselves as laboratory technicians and work on special studies for the United States Public Health Service this student is testing for bacteria in food caused by handling because of the Urgent demand for trained nurses Hampton is cooperating with nearby hospitals by providing classroom and laboratory training several graduates of Ground School classes like this are now flying with the United States Army Air Force Pursuit squadron at Tuskegee others are serving as instructors in other college airfields while turning out War materials on contract these students are training to take their places with the nation skilled mechanics stepup courses are offered to men already in war industri as well as to students to meet the demand for skilled workers at the nearby shipyards where more ships than ever before are sent down the waves Hampton's agriculture department has added a course in farm management for women these girls are planting corn on the college Farm as they learn to operate farm equipment at the student-built dairy farm girls watch an expert milk a cow one of the most significant fields of the war program is the study and work in nutrition much research has been done with the use of soybeans as a substitute for meat and milk so important at present when we're conserving these foods for war purposes since the War Began many radio programs have been sent over Hampton station giving the results of research ways to improve diets to raise better crops and how to do our part to win the war are broadcast to thousands of families Within Reach of this station students take a course in surveying and topography to Aid them in army training The Institute regiment has been in existence since 1868 when Hampton was founded Cadet uniforms are made by students in the college tailoring classes many of Hampton's facilities are now being used by the Armed Forces selected men throughout the country are sent for training as Army motor mechanics after the 3 months course these men are usually sent back to their posts in charge of repair Crews army trucks from nearby camps are soon put in order the first class in specialized training is now given in Hampton's engineering department for hundreds of men in the United States Navy thousands of men and women of these colleges over the nation are now taking their places in our war effort physically and mentally [Music] fit uh yeah fascinating um you know uh the uh federal government realized the importance of um educating uh that population and um sometimes they forget so uh this next film is uh back to our our good friends that coret this is North America it's Rivers enjoy [Music] the rivers of North America have played a vital part in the exploration and settlement of the continent to the American Indians the rivers were natural highways highways that early Pioneers used to help settle the new world today the rivers are still heavily used for transportation [Music] but the rivers also work in other ways for man dams and giant reservoirs have been built to control the turbulent Rivers the dams generate electrical energy to run North American homes and factories the reservoirs Supply water for irrigated farming and domestic water supplies for cities most rivers of North America begin far up in the mountains or Hills with a small spring or melting Glacier as the stream flows from its source other streams and rivers its tributaries join it and increase its size a river and all its tributaries make up a river system the system drains water from the surrounding land called The River Basin the great Watershed of the continent is the Continental Divide which runs along the western cordilla mountains it determines the two great drainage directions on the west side of the Divide rivers flow into the Pacific and northwesterly into the Bearing Sea rivers on the east side of the Divide flow northeasterly into the Arctic Ocean and Hudson Bay easterly into the Atlantic and southeasterly into the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea many rivers east of the Divide are tributaries of the North American father of waters the great Mississippi Mark Twain's shining River winding here and there and Yonder a pageant of American History has passed up and down this largest river in the United States one of the largest inland waterways in the world one main source of the Mississippi is a clear little stream less than a foot deep it flows out of the Northern end of Lake atasa in Minnesota as the Great River Flows South to the Gulf of Mexico 250 tributaries pour into it graining a small part of Canada and 40% of the United States sand mud and silt are carried by the River from the Rocky Mountains from Illinois cornfields from Mississippi cotton fields and from Pennsylvania hillsides silt is deposited at the Mississippi's mouth in the Gulf of Mexico this is the Mississippi Delta new land being made by the powerful river system year after year the Great River deposits a million tons of silt a day building the Delta farther out into the Gulf the Mississippi is an important water Highway that carries more than 200 million tons of freight a year Freight from as far north as the Great Lakes coal from Pennsylvania oil from Texas a serious problem of the Mississippi is one it shares with some other rivers of North America flooding loss of life and destruction of property occur when the Mississippi breaks through its banks to combat the dangers of flooding an enormous system of man-made Banks levies has been constructed to keep the river contained flooding is also serious on the Ohio River a chief tributary of the Mississippi the two giant rivers meet at Koo Illinois for flood prevention this dangerously located city is protected by high concrete levies when the rivers rise these openings can be quickly closed to control the flooding the Ohio River's level rises sharply because its Basin has heavy spring rains and winter snows abundant rainfall and good soil make the Ohio Basin one of the rich farmlands in the United States in addition to agriculture the Ohio Basin is heavily industrialized Cincinnati is one of the many Pioneer settlements that were established when the Ohio was the Gateway to the West Cincinnati is a huge manufacturing center because of the heavy industrialization of the Basin the Ohio river is suffering from a problem common to many of the rivers of the continent pollution waste from factories and urban communi ities have turned portions of the river into open sewers pollution is also a problem of another major tributary of the Mississippi the Missouri River the Missouri's Basin is not as heavily populated as the Ohio's yet River pollution comes from Farmland and from large industrial cities like Kansas City Missouri and bismar North Dakota away from the industrial areas portions of this magnificent Missouri are much as they were when it served as a route to the West the river transported LS and Clark on their exploration of the northern portion of the Louisiana Purchase they were followed by fur trading mountain men who eded the river as their Highway West then in the 1840s migrating Pioneers used the Eastern portion of the Missouri before starting their Overland journey to California and Oregon today Mammoth dams and reservoirs like these at Fort peek Montana control the river and Supply hydroelectric power at the same time water is conserved for irrigated farming the shallow muddy Missouri and the deep wide Ohio and the great Mississippi make up a river system that has about 14,000 Mi of navigable waterways a contrasting river system is the mostly non-navigable R Grand a shallow shifting river that forms a portion of the border between the United States and Mexico where it's called Rio Bravo Brave River in seasons of little rainfall the lower portions of the Rio Grand may run [Music] dry contributing to its shallowness is the draining of its precious water for irrigated farming the Rio Grand is a winding river that often as if by whim changes its course during its colorful history it caused boundary disputes between Mexico and the United States disputes that partly contributed to the US Mexican war in 1846 west of the Rio Grand across the Continental Divide is the Colorado River the powerful Westward rushing Colorado has for millions of years eroded its way through layer after layer of rock to produce the Grand Canyon the rapid Colorado is a beautiful River largely unspoiled and unpolluted because of the sparsity of population in its Basin the powerful Colorado drains 1/4 million square miles of mostly Barren land areas in the Colorado Basin have been changed with a construction of dams like Hoover Dam the reservoir behind the dam is Lake me one of the largest man-made bodies of water in the world the lake is increasingly used for recreation but more important water from this huge Reservoir is carried by The All-American canal and other channels to irrigate thousands of Acres of Rich crop lands in California Arizona and Mexico north of the Colorado is the Columbia River a small portion of which is in Canada from its source in the high Rocky Mountains of British Columbia the clear sparkling Columbia river runs through forested mountains of western Canada to become the greatest Waterway emptying into the Pacific Ocean the Columbia drains an area equal to the Basin of the Colorado River IT Supplies vast areas of the Columbia Plateau with precious water for irrigated farming a distinction of the Columbia river is its abundance of salmon and other fish salmon can be caught so easily that the supply is decreasing Canada and the United States have jointly passed laws for controlling the fishing this hopefully will ensure preservation of salmon as a food resource the two Nations have also assisted cities and towns along the river to keep the water clean and the Columbia river which serves few large cities has not been severely polluted in addition to the Continental Divide and determining the East West River flow there is a subcontinental watershed generally along the Canadian United States border that separates the rivers that flow to the south from those that flow to the north the St Lawrence River a major Commerce route flows northeasterly and empties into the Atlantic the St Lawrence is the most important river of Canada since it was first seen by the French in 1535 the wide deep course of the St Lawrence has been a highway for explorers fur Traders and the colonists who came to settled Canada today the St Lawrence Seaway has made the river even more important by creating the world's largest Inland Waterway for deep sea navigation large oceangoing ships can sail from the Atlantic into the Great Lakes a distance of 12200 miles here in Montreal the Seaway is a complex system of dams locks and reservoirs west of Montreal the river is bordered by small towns and pleasant farmlands ships proceed up River into the Great Lakes to Inland ports such as Calumet Harbor Chicago in contrast to the industrial St Lawrence Great Lakes region is the undeveloped Basin of the McKenzie river in the cold Northwest it's Canada's longest river the McKenzie drains an area as large as both the Columbia and Colorado basins combined the McKenzie Basin is sparsely populated with a climate too cold for agriculture but the Basin is rich in petroleum and other minerals this cold desolate land is a new frontier which promises to become more developed and populated in the future almost as isolated as the McKenzie is the Yukon river starting in Canada it meanders through the Klondike goldfields on its way to Alaska and the Bearing Sea the Yukon and its Basin teamed with gold H 100ry Prospectors in the late 1890s today the gold production has decreased and the area remains unsettled during the Gold Rush the Yukon was used for shipping but it's frozen for as long as 7 months each year today air and rail Transportation have made shipping by boat unprofitable on the Yukon the hundreds of rivers of North America the broad sweeping ones the shallow muddy ones the powerful rushing ones all contribute to farming Urban water supply hydroelectric power Recreation and transportation in North America see that has an outro so I know like okay that's that's where I can start um yeah so I had this film queued up like last week and I didn't show it but it's like oh well this is totally related to what I just showed so here's watch along the Watershed in towns that have been flooded a heavy rain can bring painful memories of lives lost property ruined jobs that vanished because industry shut down this is the story of people who are prepared they built a system to keep flood losses down a rain still still brings memories but not despair people know the system is there the harder it rains the quicker that system will spring into action this is Carl Stefan on the lower loyal sock I got 2 in of rain here at my place okay 2 in on the lower lowest BL right okay we'll take care of it a single phone call from an upstream Observer to an emergency services Center is enough to activate the system unit 161 caller Center unit 161 caller Center 0925 R we've got a call from Carl Stefan he's got 2 in of rain on the lower sock maybe you better call the rest of the coordinators and find out what's happening Howard you can call the Larry's Creek observers if you would and get their readings within minutes some 2200 mil of rising streams are brought under Round the Clock surveillance yes we' got ail uh we just had a report from Carl Stefan on some rain out there he has got 2 in if you could uh get in touch with your people and get back to us what happens afterwards depends on the rain if it stops this becomes an exercise but if it continues this can become a matter of life or death so now we wait see what's [Music] happening in some ways a flood plane is an attractive place to live and work but a risk is always involved in 1972 along the susuan river and its tributaries tropical storm Agnes brought flooding that caused billions of dollars in damage A Private Industry on the flood plane was among the first to respond with a comprehensive plan that would reduce its losses Sprout walren is a division of the copper company it employs more than 1200 people at its Muny Pennsylvania plant Sprout Waldron's vice president and general manager Les Murray during the 1972 Agnes flood the water level was about halfway up the windows over the canopy that's equivalent to about 8 ft of water in our shops and about 6 ft of water in our office the out- of pocket uh uh loss was approximately a million dollars with another million dollar in loss of business we had a little bit of warning at that time and we took some steps to minimize our losses but without accurate information your efforts are almost misguided and we in fact probably would have been just as well off not to do anything as I remember at the time most of our workers were very concerned about our ability to stay in business and during the height of the flood and the cleanup period afterward the main concern was whether or not they would still have jobs it caught us completely by surprise the river was coming up but so what it came up before only this time it never [Music] stopped mud debris all over the place the stench alone was enough to discourage anybody every motor had to be taken off [Music] disassemble disaster just three months that I don't even remember 3 months right out of my life just 12 hours a day you work till you drop and then come back in the morning and work till you drop and come back in the morning work till you drop for 3 months that's something I never want to go through again that's for sure after the 1972 flood uh we decided that we couldn't live in a flood plane forever without doing something to minimize our losses during the flood we had noticed that there were a number of Old Timers around that had their own flood warning system so we decided to develop our own flood warning system and try to predict the height and the time of the crest of any uh Poss possible flood we uh also decided that we would never again make any Capital Investments of any major size in a flood plane and we made permanent changes to our plant uh facilities but the most important thing is we had a temporary flood warning evacuation system developed where every employee knew exactly what his job would be in the event we decided to evacuate our plant and those moves alone I think minimized our flood losses considerably permanent changes included raising of vital [Music] equipment wooden flooring was replaced with concrete new doors were cut in some buildings and equipped with manual backup controls any new buildings were located on high ground in a flood emergency this one becomes the command post of the company 's own flood warning system brout Waldron's plant engineer is on the line now to the County Center okay and if uh any new data comes down will indicate any significant change the next half hour an hour please let us know okay thank you this system is now part and parcel of the system organized by loming County warning center it's raining hard now all over the county but how much is falling and what percentage is reaching the street dreams as runoff that data is coming in from a core of volunteers monitoring each of the six major watersheds in the largest county in Pennsylvania ly homing county is bigger than Road Island though the county seat at Williamsport is protected by levies such protection is Not Practical for the entire County with the flood of 72 in mind the County Commissioners authorize development of a countywide warning system a full-time employee of the Planning Commission was designated flood warning coordinator this person is not a flood specialist but was able to get immediate help from state and federal agencies such as the National Weather Service part of its flood warning mission is to encourage and assist local effort the head of the Weather Service Office near Williamsport is John Murray well equipped to provide forecasts of the river the weather service does not have the resources to monitor each tributary so the Weather Service proposes that counties uh prepare their own self-help programs and in this respect uh we will uh cooperate to the utmost with the counties to uh help them set up these programs in doing this we will provide not only the technical uh assistance to select the sites where stream gauges rain gauges should be placed but we'll also provide the limited amount of Hardware that's necessary that is rain gauges staff gauges with help and technical assistance from the Weather Service the Corp of Engineers the Susana River Basin commission federal and state Emergency Management agencies and others loming County's flood coordinator was able to start organizing the system now in the act of coping with what looks like a flood it's a simple system based on a network of volunteers it's a growing Branch 1.95 and there is no staff gauge there 1.95 okay Hills Grove 2 in of rain staff gaug 2 ft the volunteers about 50 in all have been recruited by the flood coordinator from names supplied by local service clubs industry associations environmental and other groups bottom of the sign there yeah never expected that much well that's what we're trying to do now is we have a pretty good system for industry and the public and businessmen like yourselves will have adequate time to be able to react uh say 8 6 8 hours ahead of a flood which give you time to get your stuff out the volunteers collect information about rainfall and stream height this they must do at least once a day every day rain or shine during bad weather this procedure may be required every 15 minutes when there is an alert uh when we have been advised or we know that there's more than an inch of rainfall uh we have to start uh observing the water once you starts to rise we come up here and redis gaug and we redis gaug every hour on the hour uh day or night and most often the emergencies happen at night but that doesn't make any difference you get up here with a flashlight you walk out in the bridge you look over here you look at the gauge you immediately get in touch with the coordinator and he gets in touch with the uh radio Center in Williamsport or the or the flood watch Center and this way we feel that we're helping ourselves and we're helping people down the creek and those that are reading the gauges up the creek are helping [Music] us good morning sir it's still raining and the data is pouring in some of it from adjacent County start taking a look at these indexes here and see what we're going to raw data however is meaningless the flood warning staff must interpret it to decide if the flood threat is real flood specialists at the National Weather Service and elsewhere have developed a simple procedure for calculating the severity location and timing of a potential flood it considers the average rainfall of a watershed as well as the capacity of the ground to absorb water information derived from tables furnished by the National Weather Service get done here this procedure makes it possible to determine how severe a flood to expect next reading we came up on meanwhile at Sprout walren Engineers are performing the same kind of calculation to take effective preventive action the company must know which of its facilities is likely to be flooded by how much water and when latest readings up the river and from the O side this procedure enables Engineers to determine the rate of Rise of the streams and the river and to calculate the time and height of the [Music] crests by now the flood warning center is fully staffed some of these workers are County Employees others are volunteers it's raining harder now all over the county flooding seems likely around the flood plane thousands of families are waiting for official word and we're waiting what were the latest figures Dave you have them here on at Sprout walren Executives and Engineers are already considering evacuation of low-lying plant areas the company is prepared the location of all vulnerable machinery and material is listed on a single chart along with personnel and vehicles needed to move it we going to have to do something in The Foundry and the pattern we're going to need uh ping at least two forklifts let's send three down wooden pallets enable heavy equipment to be moved by forklift with the trucks waiting to transfer it to Higher Ground lift bars make it easier to load generators onto waiting flatbed trucks special fittings enable workers to quickly disconnect hundreds of motors which have been numbered so they can be put back quickly yep [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] how at the flood warning center potential trouble surfaces Steve I haven't heard anything from CH coolage on Pine Creek and I've tried to call out there I can't get through uhoh okay let me go see if I can raising with the radio people it's trouble this system is well prepared to handle hey I can't get a hold of Chuck coolage up in a Slate Run area I think the phone lines are up can you have one of your people in get in there W3 okay good enough good W how just looks like uh these readings are starting to look pretty heavy now by now the County Center has a prediction and is just about ready to recommend that a warning be issued but first two final checks hello wal 2 St we might have minor to moderate flooding in some few areas along M Creek company and the County check their predictions with each other National Weather Service and both check with the Weather Service I'm glad you called uh say we've got some problem shaping up here this Blood warning system in other words has three separate components Each of which complements and reinforces the other problems here this afternoon system I think we better get out with a warning right away especially on like coming and Muny what do you think the National Weather Service says we're going to get about 2 more inches of rain and uh we got some minor heading toward moderate flooding going on on my cuming Creek here the decision to issue a warning is made by the County Commissioners about it I thought I better let you people know okay now how much time you you think that we have the director of Emergency Services coordinates the effort all emergency agencies in the county have to be alerted adjacent counties must be informed the warning to the public will go out over the emergency broadcasting system um activate the EBS we also will want to get hold of the Red Cross uh he's looking at a 4-Hour time period until it hits the the populated areas here of of cing Creek so like gives us enough time 35 be advised we have been notified from the flood control like cing Creek is rising you should go through the bridges and check the gauges and notify us of any changes headquarters okay we have received word from County that loming Creek area in vicinity of cotage Avenue is starting to flood we have to go knock on doors evacuate [Applause] people how many more do we need just couple more K 3 mgy C defense control 171 yeah this is skip the W A do you have a message hi Skip let's plan down flood warning system about 10 minutes we're going to broadcast over the EBS system a uh flood warning will you be ready at that time yeah I'll notify the other stations right away we interrupt this program because of a local emergency important instructions will follow the national weather service has issued a warning of moderate flooding effective until 900 p.m. for persons along loming at Muny Creek in loming County this [Music] afternoon this is not the flood that came that [Music] day it's the flood of 1972 which occurred with very little warning [Music] now the federal and state governments the Private Industry and the county are cooperating to see that there is a warning thousands of people are able to take action to protect their property and Safeguard their own lives this situation has lasted 11 hours finally word comes from up country of a welcome change in the weather okay got good news okay thank you very much Doug about the moderate level yeah rain stopped up at Forksville hard all right the rain has stopped that's the W but if it were to start again tomorrow this whole system would be activated once again the largest motivation is probably self-preservation I mean for years the Nature has flooded this Valley not very often but when it has it's it's it's done a lot of damage it was the only way that we have of knowing whether we're going to be flooded or not if we you know if we're not on our toes we're we're going to be in trouble and if I have know we could have done something like this here I I'd I'd have helped long before this and uh I'm glad I I can I can be part of it flood warning is now a permanent function of government in loming county county commissioner Dave Castlebury the initial cost for setting up the flood warning system in L cing County was only uh about $500 and uh this has proven itself to us to be a worthwhile investment because in one year alone we feel that there was a a saving of about 3/4 of a million dollars to the property owners of L cing County and certainly uh we're of the opinion that is reason enough to want to continue this project we are committed to continuing this project in the future in Industry executives are pleased with the proven success of the system they've saved money during the 1972 flood we incurred out of pocket losses in excess of a million dollar and some parts of our plant were out of operation for over 3 months this is to be compared with the 1975 flood when we incurred losses of about $75,000 and we were literally back in production in about 3 days since that time the ly homing County flood warning system has been developed that utilizes governmental agencies in addition to the volunteer organization we expect to have much better information and I think we can do an even better job as long as people live and work on it a flood plane will involve a risk to life and property but as long as people pull together to keep watch along the Watershed that risk can be [Music] managed all right watch these credits go [Music] [Applause] [Music] by [Applause] [Music] um it just it was serendipitous the fact that I showed a film about rivers and then already had this film about rivers flooding um queued up that happens occasionally all right so we uh tried to watch a film on the scanner uh a couple of days ago on two wheels and it crapped out and so we had it scanned on our uh 4K scanner and so uh let's watch watch it uh I'm going to jump ahead a little bit and try there'll probably be some overlap with what I showed but uh just be aware that the first part of this is very spcy anyways so it's like these kids in front of this weird Court where it's run by the the judge is like a teenager looking guy it's kind of strange anyways this is a jam handy film uh on to Wheels enjoy want to plead guilty or not guilty guilty you roner it is my duty then to sentence you you better leave your bike around the courthouse here all next week on Thursday the telegraph Messengers are going to have a safety meeting at the central YMCA you go there and then write a composition on the safe riding rules The Messengers talk about and now before giving the prize money to those fellows who did the best job of riding last quarter I want to talk about the four rules of safe bike riding that you're going to be judged on the coming 3 months I'd like every one of you to be 100% on these four the first of these four rules is ride alone two on a bicycle is one too many look here boys when you ride another fellow on the handlebars or Crossfire this is what happens the shoulders and head head of the boy on the crossbar shut off the view of the road ahead as if you had pulled down a black window shade furthermore because of this other fellow on the crossbar you've got to spread your knees way up and that brings the sides of your feet on the pedals when you ride alone you ride safely you can see clearly ahead your feet are flat on the pedals you don't have the job of balancing the other boy so rule number one one is ride alone safety rule number two The Pedestrian has the right of way always in some places bicycles are not allowed on the street they must use the sidewalk and in other places bicycles are ruled off the sidewalk they must use the street so you fellas will have to learn the local regulations and above everything else remember that The Pedestrian has has the right of way and now for number three to say it in Saturday afternoon English use your own power don't hitch when you hitch a ride you're really riding blind you're depending on that fellow who's doing the driving to keep going in a straight line but sometimes the driver stops suddenly or turns sharply when you use your own power and keep both your hands on the handlebars you have complete control of the bike when you've got the bike under control you're safe our fourth rule is based on traffic signs everyone knows what St o p spells stop means just what it says nothing less it's not enough to almost stop at stop streets you must actually stop you're safe only when you obey the traffic signs all of them just as stop means stop slow means slow the signs are put up there for your protection as well as for the school kids so fellows in the next 3 months let's have three no accident months these bicycle ERS have made some fine safety records under all conditions they have written safely and Bill Whitmore has learned from them the juvenile traffic court has helped safety Mary Louise you rode a bike that wasn't in good repair over on Orchard Avenue last Monday your bike upset and knocked down another girl on a bicycle the reason was that the hand grip was loose and when it came off you lost control of the bicycle have you anything to say Lou guilty or not guilty I'm guilty all right your honor I'll have to ask you to leave your bike here at the courthouse for a week then there's a rent a bike man out here at the park recommends you see I was sentenced because my bicycle wasn't in good condition and so I wasn't a safe Rider our traffic court wants everybody to ride safely the court sounds like a good idea to me nowadays with just about everybody wanting to ride we all have to ride safely why even folks my age and older are enjoying the fun and the exercise too and it seems they're never too young to learn to Pedal around yeah safety's a real problem with thousands of all ages riding uh step over here at the shop I want to show you something and as you say the court told you you weren't a safe Rider when your bike wasn't in good shape the judge was right now around here we try to have safe bikes that fell there has a steady job checking over my 200 bikes every day brakes hand grips missing spokes we try to keep them all tip toop I learned about safety when I was a Six-Day bicycle racer did you ever hear of them yes but I never saw a race well a lot of people liked them and I had a good time in most races of course a racer can't take a chance and no other bicycle Rider can either on a bike not in A1 condition and here's another safe riding rule I brought over from racing it's all right for Racers to spread out all over the track riding a breast but out on the road or in the Parks where there's other traffic the bike rider wants to be sure to ride in single file always and when you hear a horn behind you you want to ride more carefully than ever if they want to race cyclist should go someplace where there's no traffic don't show off on the city streets ever and don't carry on a conversation with another Rider in traffic keep your mind on the bike a lot of my business comes at night it's a good time to ride and can be just as safe as daytime but the bike and the rider have to be seen and so all folks who ride at night should have a good beam light on the front it should throw a light at least 200 ft and reflectors on the rear that glow red when headlights hit them then for absolute safety a bike rider ought to wear a white sweater or a white shirt at night then they can be seen bicycling is just about the best fun and exercise there is young lady so you get that bicycle yours fixed up and remember all the things I told you about safe riding thank you goodbye goodbye and Mary Lou will be a safer bike rider after this lesson in safety now let's see what's going on back in the juvenile traffic steal you've pleaded guilty to causing an accident by Reckless riding in traffic you'd better have a talk with officer gleon of the safety patrol at high school leave your bike here for a week spend as much time with officer gleon as he'll give you and report back here one week from today court [Music] adjourned well Tom I suppose safety on a bicycle is a lot like safety in a normal mobile and there are a lot of rules of safe driving for automobiles that can just as well be applied to safe riding come on let's take a ride I'll show you what I mean you see these parallel safety rules sort of grew up together applied to bicycles first why I can remember when bikes outnumbered automobiles by a long shot but today we have a lot more cars than bikes on the street and we've had to make some rules to keep the street safe in the first place Automobiles and bicycles must move straight in traffic weaving is bad business that's rule number one driving a car or a bike ride straight I know you can ride a bike but I want to show you something about beginners when a fellow's learning to drive an automobile he goes out into the suburbs to a quiet street where he won't run into anybody it should be the same with bikes yesterday I had to tell Freddy to do his practice writing off the street out here he can wobble around and fall all he wants to he's not taking a chance on anything but the bark on his knees when a more experienced fellow gets on a bike he has experience and skill to help him and until Freddy has these two things he'd better ride in a safe place and stay off the streets and here's something else about safety you boys can learn from your fathers learn and practice the accepted hand signals you see I know what that fellow up front is going to do so I know what to do and we are all safe hence out here outside of town there are some of these these parallel safety rules I want you to see the safe driver and the safe Rider never pass a vehicle ahead no matter how slow it is if the road isn't absolutely clear for a safe distance look at it this way rules are only safe driving or safe riding practices put into words well Tom I sure show you what I mean by parallel rules of safe driving and safe riding and there's one more for both automobile drivers and everyone on bikes Park in a safe place in a place provided for parking for automobiles there are parking lots and they're allowed to park on the streets for a limited time where and when it's safe and just the same there are safe places to park bikes safe for the bike and out of the way of people walking over at the high school and on all playgrounds I know of there are parking racks for bikes Park in them today thousands of Americans are enjoying bicycle riding bicycling is great sport as well as wholesome safe outdoor exercise because so many are riding all s should follow these few simple rules of safe riding rules applied to your motorc car will make driving to on the end uh uh yeah um so that we scanned and um um because it was too um warped on on on this uh scanner and it was having problems with tension so um Monday I am going to be having my procedure that uh is correcting something that happened when I had an accident on a bike when I was 12 um it's supposedly not a big deal it's 10 minutes procedure but they're going to put me under and all that stuff so I'm probably not going to feel like wanting to talk to you fine folks even though uh I enjoy and it gives me a boost to talk to you fine folks but I probably won't want to come in to the archive and I don't know so I'll pre-record a show on Sunday um and um so my my public service announcement is uh related to this injury is if you have the option do not buy a bike for a child that has a crossbar on it do not do not do not uh it is costing me tens of thousands of dollars to deal with this accident related to there being a crossbar and if it was a ride if I was riding a bike that didn't have a crossbar I would not
