is that that is that that hi everybody Welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show my name is Skip Alzheimer we watch old 16mm films and that film actually came from the orgon archive which ultimately came from the uh Mogul Brothers collection but the obviously the film was made as a way to uh do fundraising for these uh schools that were being set up by the methodists uh to train uh young black men and young black women and uh so the idea is that and we've seen other films uh that are kind of what we call missionary films a lot of them tend to be visiting other countries and talking about spreading the word of God um but this one is um you know uh in the United States and I feel like there's another one that's uh for Native Americans but uh this uh it's fascinating film uh I I've seen other films like this where you know it's the camera's coming is we're going to capture uh bring a cameraman to the school so everybody be on your best behavior and everybody dresses up and then they're like okay we're going to do a out outdoor uh activity of passing a ball and everybody's wearing a a tie and it's like yeah that's probably not how they normally dress but you know I don't know um but uh interesting nonetheless it's it's a interesting part of the history I mean Black History Month is American History Month um because we're looking at the contributions uh and uh of black Americans and things that led them to where they are so uh we'll be watching more films uh this month um we've seen some really great ones too I mean we you know I don't necessarily when I show a film it's oftentimes I have no idea what it is so we have seen some pretty amazing um things uh especially with black artists so um I'll try to find some more in the meantime behind me I have a film scan behind me I have a film scanner uh with a film setup it's called decisions decisions enjoy my [Music] thank you have you decided what you want yet I guess I need some more time okay but remember we close at 600 that's only 3 hours away I was just teasing Kathy you take as long as you want I'll come back to you hi hi J two usuals please come on Tony you guys never have the same thing twice what's it going to be this time I'll have a butterscotch sunde with Rocky Road ice cream oo and a little bit of hot fudge surprise me but keep it under 250 yes sir I'll bring it over as soon as it's ready thanks Jenny how's college oh it's great what I'm learning at school I'm using here you're learning how to make ice cream at college no she's learning how to be a counselor one day I want to do the same thing your Uncle Tony does be a high school counselor you'll be a good one too when I was in high school I had some tough decisions to make Tony showed me how to handle them since then I've been learning everything I can about the whole business of making up your mind you know deciding which ice cream flavor to have can be tough especially when there are so many to choose from now picking chocolate or pistachio won't really have much effect on your life but as you grow up you're going to be faced with more complicated decisions and the choices you make can affect you for a day a year or even the rest of your life I've started to realize that every decision I make gives me a hand in shaping my own life even hard decisions are getting to be fun but then I have a system I've even written it down and shared it with some of the kids that come in here and I'd like to share it with you too this is my decision-making system use it whenever you have trouble making a decision just follow the five steps first know what's important to you if you keep in mind what's important to you in any situation when you have to make a decision you'll probably make a choice you'll be happy with second consider all your Alternatives if you think you have to make a choice between just one one thing and another you may be overlooking something step three is gather information if you're choosing between several different kinds of bicycles find out everything you can about each of them and remember advice is information too step four is consider the consequences use your imagination to see what the outcome of each of your possible Alternatives might be step five is make your decision and M don't delay you'll feel much lighter inside once you've handled it like Amy over there last week she had to make a decision hello Peter's resident I'm starved oh hi Mrs Harrison mom's not home yet oh that's great Nina loves to roller skate I'll tell you for sure after I get permission okay bye have you ever made a spaghetti sandwich well I better not oh no what's that your a part card no it says that Mrs Stark called Mom this morning and asked if I could babysit Jeremy on Friday night at last your big chance to start babysitting sure but Mrs Harrison just told me that Nina's surprise birthday party is this Friday night at the roller dome no contest go to the party Jeremy Stark is a brat he'll probably break something and blame it on you wait until you can babysit someone nice it's not that simple this is the first chance I've gotten and I want to show Mom I'm serious you better let me do that I want four slices please what's that it's a decision making card Jenny the girl at the sweet shop gave it to me want to try it out okay you better cut the cheese too okay number one know what's important to you I want to become a babysitter and I want to earn my own money but your Nina's best friend so you should be at her party yeah now what number two consider all your Alternatives I can babysit or I can go to the party or you can take Jeremy to the party and babysit in there well that's possible or can you babysit and go to the party later no they're both at the same time the third step is gather information why is it ne's party on Saturday that's her birthday it's a better surprise on Friday any more Steps step number four consider the consequences if I don't babysit for Mrs Stark then she'll have to find another babysitter and may not call again and mom might not think I'm serious if I don't go to the party I'll miss out on all the fun of the roller skating Rank and I might hurt Nina's feelings because it's a surprise party I can't talk it over with Nina first if I could I know she'd understand if I tried to do both Babys sit Jeremy at the party I wouldn't have a good time what's the next step step number five make your decision and act great what kind of action put you in two places at once what do you you really want to do I really want a babysit that's more important than the party but I don't want to hurt Nina's feelings so I'm going to take action I'm going to send a card to the surprise party telling Nina I'm sorry I can't be there but that she should meet me on Saturday so we can celebrate her real birthday together and I'm going to babysit on Friday night now can I have my sandwich just half and only after the stuff is put away okay but don't think Jeremy Stark is as easy easier to push around as I am I'll be able to handle him no sweat happy birthday Nina thanks Amy to my best friend a successful babysitter Amy's decision wasn't that hard by using the steps she was able to babysit and express her friendship to Nina it's important to know what you about Amy knew that her friendship with nah was important but the party wasn't by being imaginative she was able to express her friendship and take advantage of the opportunity to babysit making a decision is a lot easier once You' sorted out what's important and what's not are you ready to order now well I'm going to meet a friend and I decided to wait till she gets here okay sure would you like a glass of water while you wait yes please it's okay to postpone a decision until you have all the information you need maybe Cathy's friend will want to do something else she's smart to wait until her friend arrives Neil was smart too he waited until he had all the information he needed before making his decision hey it's your birthday next week huh uh-huh have you thought much about that well I'm going to be a teenager but it's no big deal your grand mother and I think it is what do you mean we want to give you a special present we talked it over with your mom and dad and they say that we can give you whatever you want whatever I want well now don't get too excited we're not millionaires well all I want is a pet well we all figured you'd say that and your parents said it's okay if you'll take full responsibility for it no problem I'll take good care of it uh any idea what you want well I'd really like a dog like Rusty but I know I can't have one because we live in an apartment so I might want an iguana or a snake something none of my friends have maybe a parrot or a miner bird sounds pretty interesting but do you know how to take care of any of those animals no but I can find out I go to the pet store and see what they have this is going to be my best birthday yet I got to get to the pet store right away maybe I could get a monkey and train it to clean my room [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] H if I get a snake s or a bird or the Iguana all my friends will think it's great but I'm going to have to clean the cage and feed it and that could get boring I guess what I really want is a dog like Rusty but there's no room in the apartment I better go back to step one and figure out what's really important to me and maybe there's an alternative I've overlooked you like your present I love it it doesn't eat or need to be cleaned or make too much noise and I can play games with it and have fun so you'll find finally chose a computer grandma and I would never have guessed that well what do you know you've already learn how to use it can I [Music] try did you notice Neil made a decision he was happy with only after going all the way back to step one and getting clear about what was important to him he realized he wanted a dog like Rusty that was impossible because he lived in an apartment so he decided wanted not to get a pet at all but he still wanted something special he'd worked with computers at school so he knew he could learn as well as have fun with one that was Neil's decision you may have made a different one the important thing is that good decisions are possible when you know what you want and why you want it now sometimes it's hard to sort everything out and it can be hard to do but the harder the decision the more the system can help a month ago Ron couldn't even look at ice cream let alone eat it he was confused and upset all the time his parents had just told him they were getting a [Music] divorce [Music] [Applause] [Music] Ron was faced with the hardest decision of his life his parents wanted him to choose which of them he would live with Ron spent a long time trying to sort out his feelings by himself but finally realized that he needed someone to talk to run hi Uncle Tony come on in so what's going on well you know about Mom and Dad yes did you know they asked me to choose which one I would live with that's a pretty tough decision have you made up your mind yet no but Mom and Dad said whatever I decide I'll be okay with them what do you want I want them to stay together and love each other like they say they love me but they've already made their decision and they think you're old enough to make yours my feelings were all mixed up maybe you haven't accepted the fact that they are getting a divorce I have finally good then maybe you're ready to try to make your decision I think this will help how's this going to help well you go through the steps and they help you to organize your thoughts and feelings how it's easy step number one is know what's important to you well I love Mom and I love Dad and I need them both what about your friends in school they're important too well it helps to make a list of all the things that are important to you and to write it all down oh yeah right step number two you consider all the Alternatives that's easy I can live with either one or the other now actually there may be a compromise so you better think a while before you rule anything out maybe you could come up with a way to be with both of them hm step number three you gather information you could find out about the city your dad's moving to and if I could have my dog or he'll live that's the idea then you just have to consider the consequences of each alternative and you be ready to make your decision but if you get stuck anywhere just go back to step one and remember what's important to you can I keep this sure you take it home and go through the steps I know it will help you sort things out can I come back if I need any help anytime Ron so I guess nothing will ever be the same I guess I still get lonely sometimes but at least I made the decision things have been a lot better since I did that I felt like I snapped out of a bad dream or something so you'll stay with your father every summer some weekends too we'll see the rest of the time I'll stay here with Mom I've got my friends here in school and my paper out and I hope I can get on the basketball team next year there's going to be a lot happening there's a lot happening right now oh we better get going or we'll miss the game I don't know what I want to do with my money at first an ice cream Feast sounded like a good idea but now I don't know well do you want to buy a t-shirt go to the movies get some posters buy a tape we don't have much time if you want to go back to some of those stores what do you want to do I don't know maybe I should save it looks like you've got two more customers H you're right I'd better go help them right away sometimes you can be so hopeless Cathy may I help you too now I don't need anything but my friend here needs a psychiatrist I think I have just a thing right here this is my decision-making system there's five easy steps think about yourself and your friends you're making decisions every single day some important some not so important making a good decision usually requires some effort like using the five steps happyday decision making is your opportunity to express yourself and to let others know who you are never forget that good decision making is best learned by experience don't be afraid to make decisions use them as opportunities to learn learn about yourself step number and to control your own life consider all the Alternatives thanks a lot those parents owe him a big debt like hey can you like talk to our kid about this this horrible dilemma that we put this kid in [Laughter] um we'll get you some free ice cream uh yeah uh having uh having divorced parents um I was in high school so I was a little bit more emotionally prepared for it but it was still horrible still a horrible situation and thankfully my parents did not move to separate towns or cities they were they live pretty close to each other which was as own problem for them but for me it was great because I could go back and forth pretty easily I didn't have to change schools all that stuff and also somebody pointed out the uh computer pet uh made by commodore uh back in the early days uh that was an actual pet p it's hilarious all right um let's learn about the miracle in Asia Japan [Music] enjoy la [Music] w [Music] [Music] la [Music] this is Tokyo over 10 million people make it the world's largest most densely crowded most rapidly growing city heart of they were no nation has ever before achieved such a phenomenal rate of growth this is perhaps the most extraordinary success story in all recorded economic history a story of Japan and a miracle in [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Asia [Music] Tokyo By Night a blaze of light more neon signs than any city in the world more movie theaters more [Music] [Applause] cafes traditional Kabuki theater plays to eager thousands bent on [Music] [Laughter] [Music] diversion entertainment and leisure activities boom as never before television covers the nation by night and by day Tokyo is APO Jam choked with people and vehicles the number of cars and trucks increases by thousands each month and still there are not nearly enough to satisfy the demand major traffic jams of two and 3 hours occur daily Tokyo is a jumble of signs and shops inadequate streets with no names wooden houses packed tightly together with meaningless numbers or none at all housing of all kinds in acutely short supply department stores smart shops Fashions appear on the Ginza in Tokyo the same day they do in Paris or New York anything in all the world you may wish to buy is [Music] here more books are published sold and read per capita in Japan than in any other [Music] country new buildings rise wherever land can be found to build them on the city pushes upward and outward growing wildly space becoming more and more precious each [Music] day on trains which carry three times their capacity commuters travel farther and farther many spend five and six hours a day going back and forth to work the overwork Japanese Railways are marbles of efficiency super Express trains travel up to 156 mph a park an island of Serenity amidst the clamor of the city silent Stones huddle in memory of crowds [Music] Departed the Imperial Palace grounds in the heart of Tokyo home of a constitutional Emperor the diet government buildings Tokyo is the capital of a democratic Nation firmly committed to a system of free enterprise and thoroughly aware of its benefits the vast Tokyo Yokohama industrial complex accounts for 30% of the nation's industrial output the important industrial centers of Japan are all located near the sea for Rapid handling of exports and imports scarce in natural resources Japan must import most of the materials needed by industry the aat Maru has just dropped anchor in Yokohama Harbor aboard a cargo of chemicals from San Francisco akiton shimura is worried his son Hiroshi is worried an impatient customer a textile manufacturer needs these chemicals today or a factory must shut shut down for want of raw materials go out to the ship arrange to discharge cargo now instead of tomorrow as scheduled try to do in a day what would normally take [Music] three akiton nishimura works for one of Japan's giant Trading compan ianes which import raw materials from all over the world and Export manufactured goods in exchange hirosi spends time learning the trading business when he's not in school trade is the life blood of Japan the indispensable heart of the economy if Japan could not trade with other nations her economy would collapse and her people could not not live it is the caros of vessels like the aaru which have built modern Japan check the Manifest see how much can be unloaded and delivered before nightfall problems like those faced by Akito nishimura are commonplace in a nation almost completely dependent on other countries for the raw materials necessary to feed her [Music] Industries a textile mill manufacturing synthetic fabrics can stay open because basic chemicals from America arrived on time unload the iron ore from India the scrap from the United States coal from Australia get the materials quickly from ship to [Music] Mill make steel steel the backbone of Japanese industry symbol of the radical shift from light to heavy industry since the war steel Japan's number one export replacing cotton textiles Japan is now the world's fourth largest steel producer despite the fact that she has practically none of the raw materials from which steel is made Steel steel for buildings and bridges what happened where'd it go it just kind of stopped uh okay um I like that uh music though that soundtrack was pretty oh look at my hair it's awesome um yeah the music kind of went nuts uh kind of like watching a too uh kaju film I was ready for a giant rubber suited monster to show up uh let's see we learned a lot here we learned how to make decisions today uh we learned about uh Japan but uh let's learn how to read a biography [Music] enjoy [Music] on this Gate built in ancient Persia about 500 BC we can find one of the earliest autobiographies ever written inscribed in the stone above of the winged Bullman are a Monarch's own words extoling himself I am Xerxes the great king King of Kings King of the countries possessing many kinds of people king of this great Earth far and wide the son of duras the king since ancient times men have written about their own lives in autobiographies and about the lives of others in biographies plutar a Greek biographer wrote parallel lives of the noble Greeks and Romans plutarch's biographies vividly portray personalities with narrative charm and psychological insight plutar wrote the biographies in pairs Greek lives are compared with Roman lives Plutarch takes us behind the scenes of History to show us how great people lived plutar is considered the father of classical biography in the 19th centuries since he wrote his lives biography has become a major literary form the life of Samuel Johnson by James Boswell is considered one of the finest examples of English biographic writing examples of American biography graphies almost always include this book The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin it is an intimate and delightful account of the first 50 years of Franklin's life a contemporary of this American Patriot was George Washington whose life inspired many biographies one of the earliest Washington biographies was one by Parson Mason weams this book is the source of many incidents which we now know are I ious in creating the boy who would not lie about the cherry tree and the young Washington who threw a silver dollar across the rapan river Williams was portraying a highly idealized person this hero worshipping account helped to create a legendary figure of Washington a symbol rather than a human being a balanced accurate biography of the first president can be found in Marcus kliff's book Washington man and monument in it Kliff describes the proud Virginia planter who loved his estate on the [Music] pomac and personally supervised all aspects of his Plantation we read in conliff how Washington referred to Mount Vernon as his Cottage and his Villa after years of serving his country as General Washington he returned to Mount Vernon as a private citizen in one of his letters Washington wrote I Am Not only retired from all public Employments but I am retiring Within Myself he longed for the Peace of private life and yet his Fame would not permit this the Virginia platter would be called out of retirement to serve his country again as its first president in judging kliff's biography we can see evidence of the author's careful research he used information from letters newspapers of the period Washington's diary and other sources in the evaluation of any biography we should consider not only the subject matter but how the author has interpreted it some men have interpreted their own lives allowing us to share their feelings and innermost thoughts Henry David thoro did this in Walden a collection of autobiographical notes at Walden Pond near conquered Massachusetts thorough built a cabin and here more than a century ago he lived a solitary life for 2 years observing the pond in its seasons and recording his impressions in language that evokes the world of natural beauty the sumac grew luxuriantly about the house in August the berries which when in flower had attracted many wild bees gradually assumed their bright velvety crimson Hue already by the 1 of September I had seen two or three small Maples turned Scarlet across the pond in the fall the lon came as usual to Mt and bathe in the pond to thoro a simple life in harmony with nature was more satisfactory than money or fame as we read Walden we can gain an insight into Thor's philosophy of life he rebelled against the evils of materialism and mechanization and advocated Harmony between man and nature so some biographies May challenge us to examine the philosophies of life in our own time another highly individual approach to life is revealed in this biography of Abraham Lincoln by by Carl Sandberg this volume the Prairie years covers Abraham Lincoln's formative period in it we discover some of the things which molded Lincoln the boy and helped make him the man he [Music] was the hard work he did as a boy on his father's [Music] Farm the profound influence of his stepmother Sarah Bush Lincoln and his persistence in getting the education available to him reading about the early influences that help shape a life can help us understand our own lives and accomplishments many biographies have been written about men who achieved success despite adversity one such life is portrayed in The Agony and the Ecstasy by Irving Stone it is a fictionalized biography of Michelangelo bonotti the Renaissance Genius of art a painter Michelangelo created this version of the Holy Family An Architect Michelangelo designed the Dome of St peters's in Rome in the cathedral is the P the morning of Christ by the Virgin Mary this masterpiece was carved by Michaelangelo when he was 24 years old the men who moved this glorious work of art from Michelangelo Studio to St Peters refused to accept money for their job as told by Irving Stone one of the workmen said we take our pay in heaven the author Stone goes on to say it was the best tribute Michelangelo could receive the author uses another Masterpiece the biblical hero David to comment on Michelangelo's superb Mastery of [Music] anatomy so in Reading The Agony and the Ecstasy we learn what artists universally give of themselves in creating a work of art but ordinary men too go through struggles in trying to succeed a humorous version of a success story of modern times is Anything Can Happen by George and Helen papash it is an autobiographical account of George as a Russian immigrant who tries to make good in America having just arrived in New York City in the early 1930s George papash is directed to an employment agency at the agency George is fortunate to find an interviewer who can speak Russian George explains that he is a skilled Craftsman and shows him his certificate of apprenticeship as a sword maker a sword maker the interviewer is stumped in America there is not much use for this ancient craft but he does suggest a job for the sword [Music] maker it's not the best job but it's a [Music] start George becomes a dishwasher in a restaurant and he's now on the road which will bring him eventual success in his adopted land this story of an immigrant struggling for a new and better life is typical of many people whose biographies are vivid proof of success stories in real life Helen Keller wrote about her triumph over physical handicaps in the Story of My Life Charles Lindberg in his book we described his spectacular achievement of flying across the Atlantic in a small plane Babe Ruth is one of many famous figures whose achievements lie in the field of sports Babe Ruth's story is that of a boy who was raised in a Baltimore orphanage and learned to play baseball there it was baseball which was to lift babe Bru from the underprivileged childhood he had known to a life of Fame and Fortune despite personal problems Babe Ruth became an American Idol but he never forgot that he was an inspiration to millions of youngsters throughout the world so biographical works on Babe Ruth give us insights into one of America's great sports figures reading biographies can give us insights into the lives of a variety of people scientists who are extending our knowledge of ourselves and of the world teachers who are imparting knowledge to others adventurers who can show us the romance of far away places and even the lives of people in ordinary situations can help us understand our own behavior how we think and act and so when we read autobiographies and biographies we are reading the records of human lives a vital form of literature that can enrich our own lives [Music] wow that was pretty great um especially the whole Ascension of the guy who's working the crappy uh as a job as a dishwasher uh in his Ascension how he's going to
