cruise Caribbean and uh so yeah fascinating look uh I'm skip Alzheimer and we watch old 16 millimeter films here on the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show and um happy to see everybody what do we got lined up here what do we got what do we got yeah why don't we do this um what is this called have a film set up on the scanner this is drafting occupations and opportunities enjoy oops [Music] what is an idea an idea is a mental picture it's only visible to one person however until he communicates his idea to others he can make a speech about his mental picture he could also write a book about it or better yet he can actually show them a sketch or diagram but if he hasn't learned to sketch out his ideas chances are they'll remain trapped in his imagination on the other hand if he makes his idea visible to others they will see understand and help make it become a [Music] reality yes those who have learned drafting can put their ideas on paper analyze develop and improve them a housewife for example may decide her home needs another room if she can show the carpenter her ideas on paper the amount and cost of materials can be estimated accurately and she can be pretty sure the room will turn out just as she pictured it but without a clear picture an enthusiastic Carpenter just might Supply his own idea suppose an autobuff wants to modify the exhaust system of his car he could waste a lot of time and money using the trial and error method or he can draft his ideas on paper then choose the best one drafting belongs to the employee in an industrial plant the man in military service the white collar worker the retired businessman the housewife as well as the young man in [Music] school if the old saying one picture is worth 10,000 words is true the person with drafting ability commands an astounding vocabulary indeed no matter where you go in the world a wheel for example is always a wheel and of course everyone knows a rose is always a rose how can you learn to communicate in this visual language this is a basic course in drafting offered by most high schools first you'll learn to use some of the tools of [Music] drafting the most important tool is your pencil you'll develop the ability to do freehand sketching through drawing you will be able to describe visually the size and shape of just about any object you'll start becoming fluent in this new visual language you'll learn to read it and write [Music] it did you ever stop to think how a transistor radio is manufactured a lot of this kind of reading and writing goes into the planning of [Music] it the same kind of planning goes into a complex [Music] computer a racing car wouldn't get far if its electrical system wasn't carefully planned even a doorbell has a circuit diagram whether it's doorbells or computers electrical system systems must be housed in [Music] something often these enclosures are made of sheet metal from housing electronic components to building an airplane you must have sheet metal drafting this kind of map shows the the location of rivers and Hills their altitude and degree of slope and sometimes the type of soil freeways pipelines buildings anything built on the ground could hardly be planned or constructed without civil [Music] drafting electronic grafting is the mapping out of electrical [Music] circuits it is basic to the invention or design of anything powered by electricity without electronic drafting complex equipment used in television broadcasting would never exist and to maintain and operate this equipment at the TV station you have to know how to read the schematics or [Music] diagrams whether you plan to open your own TV repair shop or work in television broadcasting reading and writing Electronics will be a must [Music] sometimes a drawing or blueprint is not enough an architect's client for example can't always visualize what he's paying for from blueprints a model gives both client and architect a preview of the finished [Music] project model building is important in developing engineering and visual concepts in in many [Music] [Applause] Industries every new aircraft design since the wri brothers has required the talents of draftsman drafting has been an important part of the history and evolution of aircraft an engineering test pilot has to be able to read the blueprints of his plane perhaps you will want a career in the Aerospace industry whether you choose a career in architecture or engineering structural drafting is a basic requirement through structural drafting you'll learn some of the characteristics of steel concrete and wood and their uses in [Music] construction [Music] and in most construction projects you will find pipes where there are pipes there must be careful planning this planning is called piping [Music] grafting knowing where the pipes will go is as vital to the building of a new high school as it is to the construction of an entire oil refinery perhaps there'll be a job for you in the oil [Music] industry many businesses rely on charts and grass in planning their future charts showing important relationships between manufacturing methods and output business Outlook or employment forecasts serve as a Visual [Music] History the making of these charts and graphs is called statistical drafting how many Industries do you think might need statistical draftsmen for Architects engineers and designers in any phase of Industry visual communication or drafting is a necessary professional [Music] language you can learn this professional language all high schools teach [Music] it [Music] everything that is manufactured has to be drafted there will always be a need for draftsmen drafting skills open the way to many career [Music] possibilities [Music] Mediterranean Sea Italy and though Italy looks like a boot it is an odd boot indeed it dips its toe into some of the warmest bluest Waters in the world while at the top its snowcapped mountains are open to Cold Wind yes this is Italy a peninsula of contrast at once oldfashioned modern and up to date artistic and religious where the people of today live side by side with the relics of a long and Rich past the contrasts begin in the north where high mountains form the border of the country these are the Alps whose snow covered Peaks have protected Italy for centuries from the threat of invasion but at the same time these rugged mountains have also isolated Italy from peaceful contact with her neighbors to the north the Highland farmer tends flocks of sheep and goats on the Mountain Meadows or harvests grain with primitive tools these Northern Mountain dwellers have had closer contact with their Swiss and Austrian neighbors than the southern Italians many who live in these mountains even speak two languages Italian and German and the blonde Children of the region often bear a closer resemblance to Northern Europeans than to the people who live in the rest of Italy there is a natural beauty Beauty to these mountain regions that is continually refreshing but every deep walled Alpine Valley reminds us that roads through the mountains are few and costly railroad operations are also difficult and expensive sometimes the northern Italians find it more practical to use cableways to reach Mountain Villages often a cable car Rises High into the mountains past the many waterfalls that are common in the Alp and that are an important source of power for Northern Italy Mountain Streams harnessed by huge hydroelectric plants run the trains into the cable cars light the cities and make the industrial Machinery turn all over Northern Italy most Italian industry is in the North in the wide pole Valley largest flat area in a country ribbed with hills hills and mountains in the po valley is a city of Turin important manufacturing center nearby is Milan the Industrial and Commercial Center of the nation here in Milan large factories produce automobiles trucks Harvesters and many other machines near the factories and in sharp contrast to them is the Milan Cathedral one of the world's most beautiful buildings a white marble structure whose construction was begun more than four centuries ago the Railway Depot at Milan is the Hub of rail transportation for Northern Italy here in the flat po valley railroads can operate efficiently and highways can be built straight and level and here in the broad flat Fields there is room for the power tools of modern agriculture like tractors plows and Harvesters which run most efficiently on level lands the machines and commerce of the po valley make this the most prosperous section of all Italy below the po valley runs another range of mountains they are not as high and rugged as the Alps but their slopes are still not suitable for the use of the farming Machinery seen in the po valley in the same steep Fields where grain is being raised there are olive trees and between them strung on wires are grape Vines three crops are raised in this one field to get the greatest possible use from the soil on such poor land farmers can rarely afford machinery and oxen are often used to pull Farming tools and carts where there is no machinery and no power water has to be carted into the farmyard by a wagon the farmer's wife often has to carry it into the house bucket by bucket a wife of an appenine farmer often uses cornstock to heat the bricks in her outdoor oven after the ashes have been swept out loaves of dough are brought from the kitchen put on wooden paddles and pushed into the oven where heat from the bricks will bake them into bread Rural Life in the appenines with its crude farming and cooking methods has been virtually unchanged for centuries some hills are crowned by ancient cities often built over a thousand years ago in medieval times their High walls were protection against warlike neighbors such old cities are very crowded their narrow streets were meant for horses and carts rather than Automobiles and trucks very few houses have electricity and if a housewife talks about running water for cooking and washing she can only mean the public Fountain the girls washing clothes here can look up and see a fine old Cathedral a monument testifying to the patience and skill of their forefathers the medieval Artisans and craftsmen who built these structures with loving care more than five centuries ago among the hills of central Italy is Florence the art center of southern Europe it was here in the bright Mediterranean sunlight of the 16th century that the Dark Ages Drew to an end and the whole Western World open to the imaginations of men like Leonardo da Vinci of Galileo of Michelangelo the ponio or Old Bridge was standing over a 100 years before Columbus discovered America on the bridge are shops of Jewelers and silver smith which for centuries have been occupied by skilled Craftsmen here many florentines hand tool leather into lovely examples of artistry or with skilled hands carve delicate patterns in objects of silver their work helps preserve the reputation of their City Florence as the birthplace of the Renaissance another of the great cities of central Italy is Rome scattered among the modern buildings of the city are ruins that tell the story of the growth and decline of one of History's Greatest Empires about 3,000 years ago Rome was just a small small village centered around a Marketplace and protected by a walled fortress on the Palatine Hill as centuries passed Rome conquered her neighbors extending the limits of her Empire to include almost all of Europe and the Mediterranean Shores by this time the simple Village of Rome had grown into a magnificent City and the marketplace had become the Roman Forum the Center of government for the great Roman Empire in this huge Arena the Coliseum games athletic contests and spectacles were held now in modern times the Coliseum is a huge ruin many of the old Roman buildings were destroyed when the empire was invaded by the vandals destruction continued in the following centuries of the Dark Ages today in the ancient Roman Forum only a few marble columns and ruined arches remain of the powerful city which once ruled Europe modern Rome is an important center of the Christian religion and here one large branch of Christianity has its focal point Vatican City the Vatican is only 108 acres in size and is completely surrounded by the city of Rome yet it is a separate nation independent of Italy and governed by the Roman Catholic Church within its walls are Gardens art museums libraries public buildings and quarters for about a thousand persons who live there the city is protected by Swiss guards wearing bright costumes designed by the great Renaissance artist Michelangelo centuries ago the vatican's most important building is St Peter's Cathedral although this huge church was built about 400 years ago it is still one of the world's largest and finest buildings outside the Vatican walls and all around it lies Rome the capital of Italy and a metropolis as modern as any of the capitals of the world Southern Italy's most important city is the seap port of Naples built around a natural Bay Naples has a fine Harbor that attracts shipping from all all over the world shipping that brings food that cannot be grown on the rugged Italian soil and the iron ore the oil and the coal that Italy needs for her factories but does not have in her land Naples has the wide Avenues of a busy modern city and it has the narrow and crowded streets that are far more common in southern Italy than in the more prosperous North near Naples is what remains of the ancient Roman city of Pompei perhaps the best preserved ruins ever found mount vvus an active volcano erupted nearly 2,000 years ago and smothered an entire living city under a 20ft blanket of Ashes today most of those ashes have been removed much of our knowledge about life as it was lived in the ancient Roman Empire comes from the many inlaid mosaics statues wall paintings and utensils that have been found in the excavation of Pompei along the coast near Naples are many small villages whose people make their living from the sea here Nets are being dried in the same way they have been dried for hundreds of years and are carefully mended before being reset for in the Deep Blue Water offshore the Nets may be damaged by the powerful swordfish or may be filled with tiny octopus both of which are considered delicious in Italy Inland the warm sun and temperate climate produce a wide variety of citrus fruits and winter vegetables which are often shipped to Northern cities to supplement the produce of the po valley in the rugged appenine mountains of southern Italy narrow Terraces must be cut into steep hillsides to permit cultivation Terraces which must be reinforced with rock walls if the soil is to be held in place every inch of every Terrace is intensively cultivated grapes grow on overhead Vines while Tomatoes corn and other garden vegetables ripen underneath such intensive cultivation is the Italian farmers's answer to the problems that arise when many people live on very little land Italy including Sicily is about 130th the area of the United States of America the United States has a population of about 150 million persons but in tiny Italy there are nearly 50 million or about 10 times as many for each square mile of land the problem for Italy is very acute for as we have seen Italy is a country with very little level land and where farm machinery is difficult to use efficiently one of Italy's big basic problems is overcrowded land in Italy a great effort is made to promote the tourist trade every year thousands of Travelers come to Italy with money to spend the country needs that money to purchase food and raw materials in foreign lands the tourist can find many attractions in Italy he finds a pleasant climate fine restaurants and Resort Hotels he may be drawn to the north drawn by the breathless beauty of Alpine ice and snow and by the brisk pleasures of thrilling winter sport or he may visit the Bread Basket of Italy the po valley with its many flat Farms efficient transportation and the huge Industrial and Commercial centers of Turin and Milan in the appenine mountains the visitor May Wonder at the Fortified cities of medieval times in Florence he may relive the past where the Renaissance began and see how its spirit is still evident there in the art and craftsmanship of modern Italy he may visit Rome and realize that 2,000 years ago this was the center of the known civilized world or he may go to the Vatican to find some of Christianity's most revered shrines farther south tourists visit Naples to see the port the modern city the famous volcano Vesuvius and the ruins of Pompei or they may go Inland to see how the farmers struggle to weak a living from the tiny Terraces on rugged appenine hillsides though poor in land and weak in horses Italy with its many contrasts is an appealing modern country rich in Beauty and cultural background her art and monuments tell how the people of Italy have played a long and vital part in the history of man and have contributed great things to the progress of [Music] civilization part History part travelog part uh Geographic um film it's Encyclopedia Britannica beautiful color the the funny thing is it's uh it was shot on kod Chrome and then they processed it to Kodak Chrome which actually literally made it contrasty um what happens is the Shadows get crushed and so that you lose that detail in the shadows because um yeah Krome is great but but uh it if you're not paying attention you can make something that's very very contrasty uh all right so behind me I have a film set up uh that I have not seen this is great I uh I occasionally go I try at least once or twice a show when I'm here to go and find something that uh on the shelf that I just haven't seen so um there's a bunch of rooms and there's a bunch of shelving units and so this one I was like oh huh yeah I don't know this one so hopefully I haven't shown it I I don't see any evidence of it but uh this is onto Wheels now it's a little warped so we might run into some problems I did put uh this on it which what happens is when the film is like going on to the core it might build up and then start what I call making making Pottery where it starts kind of funneling out and then at some point it just collapses and then it's 20 minutes to an hour of trying to detangle film sentence you you better leave your bike around the courthouse here all next week on Thursday the telegraph Messengers are going to have a safety meeting at the central YMCA you go there and then write a composition on the safe riding rules The Messengers talk about and now before giving the prize money to those fellows who did the best job of riding last quarter I want to talk about the four rules of safe bike riding that you're going to be judged on the coming 3 months I'd like every one of you to be 100% on these four the first of these four rules is ride alone two on a bicycle is one too many look here boys when you ride another fellow on the handlebars or crossbar this is what happens the shoulders and head of the boy on the crossbar shut off the view of the road ahead as if you had pulled down a black window shade furthermore because of this other fellow on the crossbar you've got to spread your knees way up and that brings the sides of your feet on the pedals when you ride alone you ride safely you can see clearly ahead your feet are flat on the pedals you don't have the job of balancing the other boy so rule number one is ride alone safety rule number two The Pedestrian has the right of way always in some places bicycles are not allowed on the street they must use the sidewalk and in other places bicycles are ruled off the sidewalk they must use the the street so you fellas will have to learn the local regulations and above everything else remember that The Pedestrian has the right of way and now for number three to say it in Saturday afternoon English use your own power don't hitch when you hit your ride you're really riding blind you're depending on that fellow who's doing the driving to keep going in a straight line but sometimes the driver stops suddenly or turns sharply when you use your own power and keep both your hands on the handlebars you have complete control of the bike when you've got the bike under control you're safe our fourth rule is based on traffic signs everyone knows what ST p o p spells stop means just what it says nothing less it's not enough to almost stop at stop streets you must actually stop you're safe only when you obey the traffic signs all of them just as stop means stop slow means slow the signs are put up there for your protection as well as for the school kids so fellows in the next 3 months let's have three no accident months these bicycle Riders have made some fine safety records under all conditions they have written safely and Bill Whitmore has learned from them the juvenile traffic court has helped safety Mary Louise you wrote a bike that wasn't in good repair over on Orchard Avenue last Monday your bike upset and knocked down another girl on a bicycle the reason was that the hand grip was loose and when it came off you lost control of the bicycle have you anything to say Mary Lou guilty or not guilty I'm guilty all right your honor I'll have to ask you to leave your bike here at the courthouse for a week then there's a rent a bike man out here at the park recommends you see I was sentenced because my bicycle wasn't in good condition and so I wasn't a safe young writer could not deny himself the exercise of his genuine creative power and under the pseudonym of dedri neerach published his satirical history of New York Washington you seem to have created had my say many times over oh Uncle no I can remember when your uncle Peter and paing and I discontinued Salam MC gundi because we didn't have any more to say after that Siege with General Washington sentiment and an instinct for Style no hendrik Hudson no one will ever ask again who reads an American [Music] book um I love he's now 77 oh niece I so tired from writing about George Washington um I think that that there's a series of these films um and I feel like they were made by Emerson uh and this is something that Encyclopedia Britannica they brought into the fold uh Emerson and Eastman teaching films and a couple of other things um and so there are these little 20 minute biographies and they're all played out the same they're all this kind of idic you know people talking in a play um but yeah and I was in the cat skills my wife and I went uh hung out with some friends um two years ago it was very hot I was hoping it was going to be cool there that the mountains were going to cool things off but no it was it was unseasonably hot but it was a beautiful Town caps skill uh New York I recommend visiting all right thanks everybody for tuning in um if you like what you saw hit
