want to come okay I'll be right over um that movie is is wonderfully cathartic for me uh some days uh technology just punches me in the gut and it wasn't related to the streaming show but it took my time away CU I'm we're doing a big digitization project for some video uh for a local um organization and man this this Mac workstation is just so many problems so annoying so I was like all right you know I showed this film back in 2020 but it's du it's due and so um it is it it's so great cuz it just just relays like I'm so mad I'm so mad and this was uh you know Swedish originally so Mel wasin like went in and translated it and tweaked it and uh yeah it was great felt really good it good to get it out to hear that somebody else some little animated girl is having the same feelings that I am and it wasn't at like uh my best friend or it wasn't at my it's it's for me techn it's never people it's always technology technology always gets me so mad sometimes I just if it catches me wrong and then I just I mean I I'm sure I've mentioned this before but once I was so mad at an inkjet printer I stomped it to pieces on the floor I threw it down and just like boom boom boom boom with little tiny pieces and um a little thing of ink that kind of spread on the carpet which was problematic but anyways I freaked out my assistant at the time time and I freaked out my girlfriend yeah I went full office space but not with a bat I just did it with my feet and uh it was a crappy laser printer and or not laser printer inkjet printer but uh I'm glad it was gone all right uh so periodically I'm might have to drag out that movie um uh because I don't know if it was cathartic for you or if it was soothing for you or if you're just like whoa what's going on um but yeah therapeutic uh let's look at a revised film about soccer for girls enjoy for years soccer has been one of the most popular outdoor sports for girls usually played in the fall it offers healthful exercise and wholesome fun the individual skills are easily learned note the challenging and vigorous action of the players and the Keen enjoyment which the game offers for the spectators the ball may be played by any part of the body except the hands and arms only the goalkeeper may use her hands the dribble is an important fundamental skill in soccer and enables a player to control the ball in advancing toward the goal dribbling technique is a foot ankle motion note that the ball is tapped not pushed by the feet this practice drill and dribbling emphasizes proper foot action for advancing the ball and passing to another player the markers simulate a teammate's position note that the ball is tapped alternately with the inside of each foot and the pass is executed with the side of the foot as well as this gaml shows the skillful dribbler may also use the outside of the foot in evading an opponent the ball is dribbled in a relatively straight line except where evasive action is necessary passing as we'll illustrate in slow motion is transferring the ball to a teammate passing is made with the inside of the foot as in dribbling or with the top of the EP note how the leg swings diagonally across the body the player uses the inside of the foot in this type of pass notice that the knee is kept straight As the foot meets the ball and the leg swings wide in gaml this technique is used for short sideward or short diagonal forward passes good soccer strategy consists in passing the ball back and forth among players to avoid opponents this is the secret of successful teamwork here a long InStep kick is used to advance the ball in the InStep kick the weight is shifted to one foot and the kicking leg swings forward as the ball is kicked off the top of the InStep a high or low kick is determined by the degree of flexion of the knee and the follow through of the leg in this game situation the ball is dribbled down the field and a highend step kick is used to score a goal use the InStep kick for free kicks and penalty kicks a penalty kick is made from this position a knowledge of defensive tactics is valuable tackling is a technique used in defensive play against dribbling and passing good tackling consists in hooking the ball away from the opponent it is important to play the ball and not the player pushing tripping or holding is a foul notice the complete balance and control used by this tackler as she deafly retrieves the ball here is a good example of tackling wait on left foot Bend low reach and hook the ball and here it is under actual game conditions trapping is a method of stopping a ball with the feet or legs this is a foot trap with the ball left in position for replay in a shin trap both legs stop the ball the ball is trapped between the extended knees and the ground this is a practice drill in the use of the leg and foot to form a pocket to trap the ball blocking is another form of ball interception any part of the body may be used except the hands or arms here the thighs are used to stop the ball notice how the player jumps to meet the ball and how the body gives slightly with the impact the ball drops in perfect position for replay the body block is used to stop a ball Which is higher than thigh level in a body block the impact is cushioned and the ball drops to the ground close to the player and in position for an effective return drills such as these help to develop skill in trapping and blocking the ball for game situations the volley occurs when a player meets and redirects a ball in the air foot volleys are execute it with the inep inside or outside of the foot watch the player move to meet the ball as the foot and leg follow through in the direction of the pass here the knee is used to volley the return of a low pass a higher pass may be intercepted and redirected by a shoulder volley note how the player jumps to meet the ball striking it vigorously and giving it a good clean bounce while voling with the head is permissible it is not always recommended for girls only experienced players should attempt it when a ball goes out of bounds in a try for goal the defense is awarded a defense kick which is a place kick and is taken on the quarter Circle lines marking the penalty area in and out of bounds kick by the defense the offense is awarded a corner kick a place kick taken five yds from the nearer corner and no other player may be closer than five yards from the ball at the time even the most skillful players cannot always prevent the ball from going out of bounds the player who touched the ball last should raise her hand when a foul such as tripping occurs the Umpire stops the play and awards a free kick to the opponents where the foul occurred it is illegal to kick backward on the kickoff the Umpire Awards the ball to the opponents for a free kick illegal use of hands are arms and pushing an opponent are also fouls a double foul charging by the defense and pushing by the attack is penalized by an umpire's roll in a defensive foul within this penalty area entitles the offense to a penalty kick a goalkeeper within her own penalty area may stop the ball and return it by using the hands carrying two steps and punting to punt this player Takes Two Steps dropping the ball on the second the kick is made with the top of the InStep here is good punting technique the ball is held away from the body weight is on the left foot as the right leg kicks the kick is complet complet it with a stiff knee toe down impact high on the InStep notice the control and coordination as well as a complete follow through soccer is a game of fast action in which the following techniques must be mastered dribbling and accurate short passes are essential to good team play the InStep kick is used to send the ball deep into the opponent territory or to score a goal The Tackle is important in taking the ball from an opponent other defensive skills are the foot trap for stopping a low ball or the shin trap using legs and feet blocking can be done with the thighs or by the cushioning effect of other parts of the body if the play can be made before before the ball reaches the ground the foot volley may be used or the ball may be kneed a higher ball can easily be voled with the shoulder or if you are an expert you might try the head volley the punt clears the ball from the scoring area all of the individual skills must be Mastered by each player and coordinate with one's teammates to get the most out of the game only then can soccer become the thrilling sport which the players enjoy so much and Spectators watch with excited appreciation soccer helps build strength endurance and coordination and offers an opportunity to develop physical fitness for Better [Music] Living uh turns out to show you so many things um let's learn about uh garden plants and how they grow again therapeutic trying to before I tackle like getting a film on here I'm I'm just now getting over that last technological nightmare which I finally I think I got fixed I'm going to go over here now and kind of deal with this so watch watch this in the meantime and learn [Music] something looking around us we can see many kinds of plants what kinds can we see what can we learn by looking at them we can learn how small some plants are and how big others [Music] grow we can find plants that grow beautiful flowers and plants that seem unattractive some plants seem to spring up everywhere and grow [Music] wild some are carefully grown in gardens for their beauty or for food let's study the plants in a garden and see what we can learn about how plants grow and how the way they grow is important to us what do you notice about these radishes they're round juicy Roots good food for us here are more plants that Supply food for us this is a very young carrot there are many root vegetables in the garden we eat the food that these plants store in their Roots other plants such as lettuce store food in the stems and leaves and and these are the parts we eat see how the leaves of this cabbage plant grow in a tight ball or head this is spinach you know what part of this we eat but what part of this plant do we eat can you see what's inside the Pod tender green peas the peas we eat are the seeds of the pea plant we eat the seeds of many plants sometimes we eat just the seeds and sometimes we eat the whole pods do you know what's inside this pod let's look tiny seeds that we eat with the Pod let's see if we can find some other seed pods we eat this plant has flowers it should have seed pods too here are some do you recognize them well in a few weeks they'll look like this now you know this is the juicy pulpy seed pod or fruit of the tomato plant almost all plants grow seeds and store food in them the seeds are scattered and when they reach the ground they may grow into new plants here are seeds from many different garden plants there are all sizes and shapes but in important ways they are very much alike if we cut a seed open very carefully we can find inside a tiny new plant all ready to grow the beginnings of a leaf a stem and a root and there is food stored up to help the plant grow to grow plants from seeds The Gardener prepares the soil so it is soft and finely broken up there is moisture in the soil too the tiny seeds are gently pressed into the soil and covered lightly then what happens how do seeds grow into plants by speeding the action in the camera we can actually watch these bean seeds grow for a period of several days they are sending down roots to soak up water from the soil and they are using the food stored in the seeds watch how the stems push their way up through the soil remember the plants are growing on water from the soil and on food stored in the seeds before long the plants are spreading new green leaves soon they have used up all the food that was in the seeds now they must obtain other materials as well as water from the soil when we look at good soil through a magnifying glass we find many things in it bits of dry leaves and grass dead insects decaying manure from such things plants obtain the materials they need to grow that is why gardeners often mix Dead Leaves and other matter into the soil to help plants grow plants grow well where the soil is Rich with the materials they need but they grow badly where the soil is poor so the roots of green plants absorb water and other materials from the soil if you look very closely at the stem of a plant you can see the veins or tubes through which these materials pass up to the leaves and on the underside of leaves you you can see the veins clearly now the leaves of green plants also take in a part of the air called carbon dioxide on the underside of a leaf are little pores through which air gets inside plants use air to help make food most plants need one thing more to make their own food look see how how strong these plants are and over here what a difference because these plants are in the shade they need more sunlight in order to grow well if you've seen a plant growing in a window you may have noticed how it keeps its leaves turned toward the sunlight most plants grow toward the light we call them phototropic we have have seen that plants take water and other materials from the soil and carbon dioxide from Air then with energy from sunlight they make their own food by a process called photosynthesis green plants are the only living things that can make food in this way many animals live on the food that plants make and store insects and other animals do great damage to plants and even kill them so gardeners often spray poisonous liquid or dust on their plants to protect them but garden plants have their animal friends too many kinds of birds eat harmful insects the lady bug is a good friend of the garden for it eats other insects garden spiders trap and eat them too toads and frogs also help by eating insects earthworms help in another way they burrow through the ground and keep it loose and fine when birds and animals eat the fruit of plants they carry the seeds to other places where new plants May grow from the seeds thus in making food Plants provide for future growth some plants we have seen grow dry seeds which contain food for new plants many garden plants store up food in their seeds in some only the seeds contain much food while others store food in the seed pods as well as in the seeds themselves some plants such as does this weed provide for next year's growth by storing up food in their Roots many plants store food in their leaves and stems but did you know that from a single leaf of certain plants such as this African violet a whole new plant can be made to grow by watching plants as they grow we can learn much about how they make and store for food that we eat and how they provide seeds and roots from which next year's plants May [Music] grow you want the plants to be green there they're [Laughter] green um thanks for letting me the dork dorky uh all right so behind me I have a film scanner that's uh misbehaving a little bit um but we'll go with this anyways uh this is uh Shoemaker and the elves enjoy 8 7 6 5 4 3 [Music] well once upon a time there was this shoe maker who was having a very hard time no customers no work to be done no money coming in things were very bad one afternoon the shoe go to the market for food for supper she asked for some money we haven't one cent said the shoe maker what would they do all they had in the house was enough Lea to make one pair of shoes well the wife said better to work than be idle I guess so said the shoem maker I'll cut up the leather and make a booze [Music] tomorrow so they went to bed that night hungry and worried knowing that something magical was going to [Music] happen l [Music] moves [Music] [Applause] [Music] p [Music] [Applause] [Music] n [Applause] [Music] a miracle and so well done the shoemaker's wife couldn't believe it then another miracle a customer the Shoemaker forgot all about the new shoes when the gentleman said he needed a heel nailed back on his left [Music] [Music] shoe mhm very nice [Music] for [Music] well well money for food and for enough leather to make two pairs of shoes forgetting all about the mystery of the night before the Shoemaker cut the leather for two pairs of shoes that he himself would make the very next day do you [Music] suppose [Music] [Music] yes yes it had happened again this time it wasn't quite so hard to believe the thing to do was sell the shoes at the market buy more leather cut it out and leave it on the workbench maybe this very nice Miracle would happen a third time [Music] [Music] yep four pairs of lovely shoes well the Shoemaker thought he'd certainly work hard all day every day cutting out leather as long as some magic hands turned them into shoes at night and they did and it went on and on and by now the Shoemaker and his wife were working late every night getting ready for those magic hands that were making the shoe maker a rich man one night the shoe maker said to his wife let's stop now it's time to do what we said we'd do yes they were going to [Music] Peak well they wear a astonished and ashamed those little elves had done so much for them so they decided to do something in return the shoemaker's wife made pretty clothes for the elves to wear instead of just aprons and this time instead of pieces of leather they laid out the new clothes on the workbench of course they had to peek again to see what would [Music] [Applause] [Music] happen [Music] a [Music] the elves danced with joy they were so delighted with their new [Music] clothes [Music] a they had danced right out of the window but they left messages embroidered on their old [Music] aprons long life and thank you dear [Music] people and happiness and peace for the rest of your lives and that's what happened the Shoemaker and his wife were happy and peaceful for the rest of their lives and the elves never came [Music] back for film un build yeah this is uh the gig economy um they get paid in t-shirts uh it's fascinating yeah it's definitely European holy cow uh we have seen this before um but okay let's see what we got set up for you uh let's uh do the history of writing enjoy every letter in our alphabet stands for a sound in our written language every word we write is made up of a few separate sounds we have come to take the invention of writing for granted but it is actually one of the most useful things that human beings have ever learned to do can you even begin to think how lost we should be without it how did writing come about here is the story when primitive people started making signs and writing things down their needs were simple they needed to check their property they also wanted to record time here are some red Indian signs to show the time of day many of the Indian tribes of North America made records of their history on skins each year was remembered by a notable event here the picture of an Indian shaking hands with a white man marks the year 1855 when the Dakota Indians made a treaty with the United States people also wanted to convey information at the bottom of a mountain path in New Mexico someone found this picture it was a warning to Travelers you can see what it meant the track is all right for goats they can scramble up but it is much too steep for horses they would fall down here is a more complicated message written by a red Indian woman it is an invitation to a young man to come and see see her she marked with the cross belongs to the bear family he to the catfish family she has two friends two more crosses and they live in wigwams not far from some Lakes hers is the one with a sign inside it a road runs Between the Lakes and the path from the home of the catfish family crosses it the young man who got this message could probably recognize what it all meant because he already knew the people in the country but a stranger even if he knew the language might very easily misunderstand it if writing is to be unmistakable it must use signs whose meaning is recognizable by everybody in North America the native Hunters used to bring the skins or pelts of the animals they had caught to the Trading Post they bed them for pots and pans guns and clothing or whatever was needed the bargaining used to be carried on in sign language and in some places it still is it is a simple language easily understandable by everyone who needs to use it in this language the recognized sign for an exchange or Burg was to point the fingers at the good be traded and then to cross them and so when writing down a trading message the picture of cross fingers became the accepted symbol for barter here is a business letter where the writer wishes to exchange Buffalo weasel and Otter skins for a gun and 30 Beaver fils anyone seeing it would know at once that it was a trade message it has the crossed fingers which mean G thus pictures developed into signs once they did so the original shape of the picture didn't matter very much and so for example the picture of an arrow hitting the ground the modern Chinese sign to arrive has got a long way from the arrow hitting the ground but it still means the same thing now let's stop and see how how we've got various systems of writing were invented in different parts of the world they all started by being simple pictures each country developed its writing in a different way in China men paint their writing on paper or silk the original pictures gradually lost their shape and acquired forms which look complicated to us but are actually easier to paint curves gave place to straight lines the ancient picture of a Ram's Head is a long way away from the modern Chinese character in other parts of the world other ways of writing developed Mesopotamia is the country between the rivers Tigris and Euphrates here a great early civilization grew up there is little Stone here but lots of mud and Clay so people used clay to write on but if you try to draw lines on Clay it will up in front of the point so they invented another way of writing they made clay tablets and they used a re with a three cornered head shaped for the purpose which they pressed into the moistened clay leaving wedge shaped marks this type of writing is called pun form which means wedge shaped when the writing was finished the tablets were baked hard in the sun in this writing pictures often got turned over onto their side this is the picture of an ox's head as you see in this writing also as pictures came to a made up of a series of little wedges they soon lost their original shape here the picture of the ox's head is completely lost there is another place which is of great importance to our story in Egypt there was also a great civilization here from this read they made a kind of paper in fact our word paper comes from the Egyptian papus the thick stalks of the plant were cut up into lengths and peeled then the white P inside was cut into thin strips a row of these strips was laid down side by side and another row over them crosswise the strips were then welded together by hammering the sticky sap of the plant stuck them all together the sheets so made were pressed and dried and then polished with a stone the result was a hard and tough paper which lasted for thousands of years in the dry climate of Egypt as the Egyptians wrote on paparis they developed much simpler forms of the old pictures this was possible because they used brush and paper which was a much quicker and easier way than cutting in stone now we'll stop again and sum up e for how the result could become quite complicated and confusing pictures were often very alike for example the Egyptians used this sign for a wall written like this it meant to push over or throw down this Babylonian sign is a picture of a plow here alongside it is a sign for man man put in front of plow meant Plowman several ways were tried to make writing exact including the use of pictures to represent sounds but it was all so complicated that only some of the priests and a class of trained professional scribes could rarely Master the Babylonian and Egyptian sign languages we are able to tell us about the next part of our story we're not so sure because the new developments did not start in Egypt or Mesopotamia but in the country lying between them modern Syria and Palestine this was the home of Semitic tribes of whom we know very little except for two of them the ancient Hebrews and the Phoenicians many were traders who were in contact with both their great neighbors and they tried to develop a simpler writing suited to their trading needs they succeeded and their success has turned out to be one of the greatest events in history the invention of the alphabet like many great inventions the idea behind it was so simple that you wonder why it didn't happen before have a look at our own alphabet again our letters were originally pictures just like all the other symbols that we've been talking about about our letter A came originally from the Egyptian picture of an ox's head and our letter B came from the picture of a house you can see here just how it came about our very word alphabet comes from the Semitic names for these two pictures but and this is the real point we don't any longer think of our a b as pictures at all we think of them only as sounds ah but this was the great invention the seites made they threw overboard all the hundreds of complicated picture meanings and concentrated on sounds alone they found that for their purpose 22 sounds covered all they needed for a written language they borrowed some of the Egyptian picture symbols and made each one stand for a single sound in their language one sound one letter the people who made this invention probably did not realize what they had done they were just using using existing writings in the way that suited them best the earliest complete alphabet we know comes from inscriptions at a place called jebal on the Syrian Coast this written language did not use vowels and the name jabel was written like this writing was not always done the same way it was often from right to left like this or it might be in alternate directions as the ox plows as it was called now let us sum up again for the biggest merchants and Traders among the Semitic tribes who invented the alphabet were the Phoenicians they were a seafaring Nation who used to travel all over the Mediterranean They Carried their alphabet to many other peoples of these the most important to our story were the Greeks the Greek name for the town of Jebel was biblos which was their word for paparis the reason being that Jebel was the port through which Traders got the paparis from Egypt and imported it into Greece from bias they got T bibla which meant writings and it is from this that we get our word bible originally the writings or holy writ unlike the seites the Greeks wanted vowels in their written language so they took some of the Semitic signs which they didn't need and used them for vow sounds in Greek A and E are examples thus from Greek Roman developed in just the same way as Greek itself had originally developed from Phoenician and so we get the letters that we know today now the Romans had three ways of writing they carved on Stone as other peoples had done they used rolls of Papyrus for books and they also wrote on wooden tablets coated with wax to do this they used a metal tool called a stylus one end was pointed for writing and the other end was rounded for rubbing out the tablets could be used again and again by smoothing over the wax at first all the letters were capitals but as people tried to write more quickly the form of the letters changed about 800 years after Christ under the emperor shalaman a style of writing developed in France whose letters begin to look very like the small letters we use today in the Middle Ages the clergy were almost the only people who could write our word Clark comes from this monks used to copy out the Bible and other books by hand and they spent great care in making their books lovely to look at Clarks also wrote the records for the Kings and courts of law this writing was more ordinary and everyday by the 14 Century there was quite a big difference between the decorative writing used in monasteries and the handwriting of officials or lawyers meanwhile in Italy people had been rediscovering old classical manuscripts this had a considerable effect on on handwriting and our modern hands owe a lot to it about 1450 came another revolutionary development the invention of printing with the first printing press the whole story of writing changed once the type had been set up hundreds of copies of the same book could be made in a very short time till then books had been very rare few people had used them but when books were available in larger quantities more and more people wanted to read and write and so since then Printing and writing have gone on together side by side printing for books handwriting for personal things like letters styles of writing have differed in every age but all including the handwriting that you use today are directly descended from the first alphabet in invented more than 3,000 years ago irony of course and I this may have been said in the comments I I was kind of briefly looking to see what people were saying um is that we have slapped back to uh pictograph uh things with Emojis and um you know communication it's crazy that like the ways we communicate like for example email suddenly now I can add emojis to my email Beyond a smiley face or a wink um and uh you know it's like oh well I have to augment what I'm saying to people with this these this library of pictographs and mean something culturally um so we're heading back in the opposite direction all right um I started off all angry and irritated I kind of relaxed when I showed you the angry movie and and showing you some other films calm me down so
