is is hello everybody welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show uh I'm skip Alzheimer and we watch old 16 mm films and I just couldn't help but show you the remaining uh Shy Guy kod Chrome outs because they're so stunningly beautiful and most of us have only seen this is in black and white uh what I do like is somebody in the comments noticed the Coronet sweater the that red sweater that has I don't know l or deer on it uh or moose um anyways that shows that sweater shows up a lot in uh in other films so it's kind of great all right uh as I said we watch old 16mm films and behind me I have a film set up on the scanner and this one is missing the title but it's called driving and traffic enjoy ping and identifying how critical Clues make driving in traffic easier safer and free of conflicts and as examples we'll be making a lane change in traffic a right turn from traffic into traffic and then a left turn all of which bring up something called strategic positioning a common sense way of driving that professional drivers use in traffic I'd like to use this obstacle course to illustrate what I mean before we go out into traffic as long as I don't push my speed as long as I can see ahead to track the car I have little trouble staying inside the cones but look what when I'm so close behind another vehicle that I can't see a head to steer when I can't track my car properly so remember this idea positioning and let me you how I use it in on the street traffic on this eight Lane Boulevard I realize I'm too close to a truck ahead actually there are definite clues that tell me I am too close for example I may have to seesaw the wheel back and forth to steer I may find myself breaking and accelerating intermittently my speed may be wobbly unsteady sure signs my tailgating is causing tracking problems my solution is to get in a better position to see ahead so as I drop back I check my rear view mirrors looking for a gap when cars behind won't close up on me I signal check the blind spot and when I'm sure the Gap behind is holding clear I change lanes now I have longer sight distances along with better maneuvering room that's what driving and traffic is all about strategic positioning always trying to have the best possible position for seeing steering and stopping something else you may have noticed I followed a definite pattern in making decisions it went like this initial alert I'm too close for Good seeing and steering scan the scene the situation behind is important now initial move left turn signal for a lane change check conflict areas find the right Gap and be sure of it point of decision change lanes point of no return it's emergency action now if I wind up in someone's way that's why in traffic we have to keep our distance in relation to other vehicles in relation to pedestrians and in relation to roadway features let's try strategic positioning and the decision pattern in another situation with more potential conflicts a right turn at that intersection ahead as I drive this is how I think through the decision pattern my initial alert right turn ahead I scan the scene both ahead and behind in my rear view mirrors my initial move is to signal and move right I check conflict areas and behind at my point of decision a final check and I know that it's clear to turn point of no return I must complete my turn without conflicting with oncoming traffic this overhead view shows several interesting factors in turn I just made did you notice them all for example the motorcycle following me The Pedestrian crossing the side street each presented special types of decisions before I could turn let's go back to see how the decision pattern helps me spot possible conflicts in advance this is my initial alert when I locate the intersection for my turn the further away I am when I identify it the more time time and distance I have to avoid conflicts the next step is to scan the scene I quickly try to spot anything that will interfere with my turn the space ahead I need to see maneuver even stop if necessary the motorcycle behind I have to be sure the rider keeps his distance as I slow down my initial move basically will be a warning to the rider behind I signal I move slightly right in my my Lane I check to make sure he can message from here on I constantly check conflict areas the intersection will Crossing or side street traffic get in my way The Pedestrian will she wait will she get across in time the side street what conditions will I be turning into and the spacing of any traffic behind me is it slowing down as I slow down these are critical questions I must answer to avoid conflicts at my point of decision my problem with The Pedestrian must be solved or I'll have to stop both the intersection and the cross street must be clear or I must stop no problem here either no door opening suddenly no chance of that car pulling out traffic behind and in my blind spots must be clear or I may cause a rear-end Collision when I find the proper spacing all around I can decide to continue into my turn and as I approach and pass my point of no return I Target my eyes down the center of the lane I'm turning into good visual tracking because a driver tends to steer where he's looking down the center of his Lane it's another way of finding proper gaps so I can make my maneuver without conflicting with someone else's course of action here's a situation that puts everything we've talked about all together a left turn when we must stop and wait for oncoming traffic we follow all the preliminary decision pattern steps and getting into position for our left turn our point of decision first involved our decision to stop and wait for oncoming traffic to clear our next decision must be when will The Gap come to let us complete our turn in looking for The Gap we use all the critical Clues we can find to spot the opening how traffic's acting all around us and that includes a reading of the situation into which we'll be turning we estimate the average speed of traffic that's been moving around us and when we spot a gap developing we must be ready to move decisively when it reaches us we don't hesitate we make a positive decision take positive action in TR traffic there's one basic rule to always remember we must be in the right place and have the proper gap to make any maneuver and to avoid conflicts strategic positioning sums it all up how we position our car in relation to other vehicles pedestrians or elements of the roadway no matter what the maneuver the problem may be our sight distance ahead or how far we can see at an intersection our problem may be in finding room to steer and maneuver or the time in place to make a turn we may be looking for a gap to get across traffic or for a chance to get into traffic strategic positioning and finding the proper gap means having extra room to see steer and maneuver [Music] [Music] safely Ford motor Motor Company thanks yeah that was a giant like L yacht of a car that they were driving so um kind of funny and I do remember my uh early driver's ed experience where you could sign up for an after school class and take driver ed from the baseball coach Mr Slaughter was his name and um so we would watch these films uh he he never showed the really gory uh Ohio uh highway safety Foundation films but we certainly had films like this and film strips a lot of film strips and I remember the whole there was like this thing this thing that we would do like scan the situation anticipate react I can't remember what it was and so I remember riding with my mom and I was doing it as I was as she was driving and she it drove her nuts it absolutely drove her nuts uh anyways um here's uh a different take on the lady in the tiger story uh the traditional one that I've shown was encyclopedia Botanica it was made by the same people that made the lottery or the adaptation of the lottery um and it's kind of wild uh this one is interesting this is definitely in the video era because there's some video effects and yeah this is Learning Corporation of America lady in the the tiger [Music] enjoy a [Applause] [Music] [Applause] in the very Olden time there lived a semi barbaric King he was a man of exuberant fancy and with all of an authority so irresistible that at his will he turned his varied fancies into facts Among The Borrowed Notions by which his barbarism had become semified was that of the public arena in which by exhibitions of manly and beastly Valor the minds of his subjects were refined and cultured but even here the exuberant and barbaric fancy asserted [Music] itself when a subject was accused of a crime of sufficient importance to interest the king public notice was given that on an appointed day the fate of the accused person would be decided in the king's Arena when all the people had assembled in the Galleries and the King surrounded by his court sat high upon his throne of Royal State on one side of the Arena he gave a signal a door beneath him opened and the accused subject stepped out into the amphitheater directly opposite him on the other side of the Arena were two doors exactly alike side by side it was the duty and privilege of the person on trial to walk directly to these doors and open one of them he could open either door he pleased if he opened the one there came out of it a hungry tiger the fiercest and most cruel that could be procured which immediately sprang upon him and tore him to pieces as punishment for his [Music] guilt but if the accused person opened the other door there came forth from it a lady the most suitable to his years and station that his majesty could select among his fair subjects and to this lady he was immediately married as a reward of his [Music] innocence this was the king's semi barbaric method of administering Justice the criminal could not know out of which door would come the lady he opened either he pleased without having the slightest idea whether in the next instant he was to be devoured or married on some occasions the tiger came out of one door and on some out of the other the institution was a very popular one when the people gathered together on one of the great trial days they never knew whether they were to witness a bloody Slaughter or a hilarious wedding and no one could bring a charge of unfairness against this plan for did not the accused person have the whole matter in his own hands the semi barbaric King had a daughter as blooming as his most flid fancies and with a soul as fervent and imperious as his own as is usual in such cases she was the apple of his eye and was loved by him above all Humanity among his coures was a young man of that finess of blood and lowness of station common to the conventional Heroes of romance who love Royal maidens this Royal Maiden was well satisfied with her lover for he was handsome and brave to a degree unsurpassed in all this Kingdom and she loved him with an ardor that had enough of barbarism minute to make it exceedingly warm and strong This Love Affair moved on Happily for many months until one day the king happened to discover its existence he did not hesitate nor waver in regard to his duty the youth was immediately cast into prison and a day was appointed for his trial in the king's Arena never before had such a case occurred never before had a subject dared to love the daughter of a king the tiger cages of the Kingdom were searched for the most Savage and Relentless beasts from which the fiercest monster might be selected for the arena and the ranks of Maiden Youth and Beauty throughout the land were carefully surveyed by competent judges in order that the young man might have a fitting bride in case fate did not determine a different destiny the appointed day arrived from far and near the people gathered and thronged the great galleries of the Arena from the moment that the decree had gone forth that her lover should decide his Fate In The King's Arena the princess had thought of nothing night or day but this great event and the various subjects connected with it possessed of more power influence and force of character than anyone who had ever before been interested in such a case she had done what no other person had done she had discovered the secret of the doors she knew in which of the two rooms that lay behind those doors stood the tiger and in which waited the lady and not only did she know in which room stood the lady ready to emerge all blushing and radiant should her door be opened but she knew who the lady was it was one of the fairest and loveliest of the damsels of the court and the princess hated her often she had seen or imagined that she had seen this Fair creature throwing glances of admiration upon her lover and sometimes she thought these glances were perceived and even returned [Music] [Applause] [Music] when her lover turned and looked at her and his eye met hers he saw by that power of quick perception which is given to those whose souls are one that she knew behind which door crouched the tiger and behind which stood the lady then it was that his quick and anxious glance asked the question which she had lost him but who should have him her right arm lay on the cushioned parid before her she raised her hand and made a slight quick movement toward the right no one but her lover saw her every eye was fixed on the man in the arena [Music] he turned and with a firm and Rapid step he walked across the empty space every heart stopped beating every breath was held every eye was fixed immovably upon that man without the slightest hesitation he went to the door on the right and opened it [Music] [Music] oh a that was a different take uh and that was definitely um narrated by Jose fer or wait wait was it not by him was it not Jose fer that did it am I misreading um 1988 Stanley Jones oh wow I don't even know who that is it sounded like Jose fer Stanley Jones I know this is centilating watching me type um Jones he was in Rebel Without a Cause if this is the same Stanley Jones Calamity Jane no it's not him because this guy died in 1981 so I don't know who who this guy is anyways great animation kind of like kind of an interesting style uh let's uh learn about ears and their structure and care enjoy we can hear the sounds of music or any other sounds because of our remarkable organs of hearing our ears how do we hear the sound of this Bas vile for example we hear the sound because vibrations caused by the strings are conducted through the air these vibrations are converted to nerve impulses by our ears this is how we hear all sounds when we think of the ear we usually think of the part we can see but let's look at the entire ear in this model the ear extends deep into the skull where the ears delicate internal parts are protected by dense bone the entire ear consists of three distinct sections the outer ear the middle ear and the inner ear which contains the actual organ of hearing the outer ear has two parts the Oracle and the external auditory canal the Oracle is the part of the ear outside the skull it directs Sound Vibrations into the auditory canal which leads to the eardrum this is a thin delicate membrane which seals off the end of the canal the eardrum is protected from dirt and insects by tiny hairs and wax producing glands in the auditory canal when excess wax builds up in the canal only a physician should remove it probing for the wax with an object can easily damage the canal or Force wax against the eardrum usually excess wax can be washed away because it tends to work out toward the open end of the auditory canal when the canal is clear Sound Vibrations reach the eardrum and set it into vibration behind the ear drum is the middle ear which contains the three tiniest bones in the human body we can get an idea of their size by comparing them with the point of a pencil because of their shape the bones are called The Hammer the Anvil and the sturup in the middle ear these three bones are joined together the hammer is attached to the eardrum and linked by the Anvil to the stup the stup fits into and covers an opening called the oval window which is part of the inner ear the inner ear is filled with a liquid just below the oval window is another opening the round window covered by a flexible membrane as the ear vibrates it moves the three bones the stup moves in the oval window setting up vibrations in the fluid in the inner ear notice that each time the stup pushes in the membrane covering the round window is pushed out by the fluid this equalizes the pressure in the inner ear pressure is kept equal on both sides of the eardrum by a tube called the ustan tube which leads from the middle ear to the throat the eustachian tube allows air to enter or leave the middle ear riding in an elevator can cause differences in air pressure on the two sides of the eardrum for example as We rise in an elevator outer air pressure decreases but because pressure has remained the same in the middle ear the eardrum is pushed outward yawning or swallowing will open the normally closed end of the ustan tube equalizing the pressure again ustan tube also makes it possible for infection to reach the middle ear for this reason a cold or Thro throat infection may affect our ears blowing the nose gently will reduce the danger of forcing infected mucus from the throat into the ustan tube and then to the middle ear we have seen that sound vibrations pass through the outer ear to the eardrum then to the bones of the middle ear and then to the fluid of the inner ear in the inner ear the vibrations reach the actual organ of hearing the inner ear has two main parts the spiral-shaped ccka filled with fluid converts vibrations to nerve impulses that are carried to the brain by the auditory nerve the second main part of the inner ear is made up of the semicircular canals these contain our organs of balance and are not concerned with hearing a cocka about the size of a p is a winding tunnel a cross-section shows us several sections of this spiral tunnel which is divided by membranes into three canals in the center Canal is the actual organ of hearing this is called the cockier Canal it is lined with about 25,000 hair cells each containing an ending of the auditory nerve tiny hairs grow from these cells as the fluid in the cocka vibrates the hairs are moved according to one Theory touching this membrane causes impulses to be sent from the hair cells into the auditory nerve and along it to the brain and we hear now let's see how all the parts of the ear work together sound waves are caught by the Oracle and directed along the auditory canal to the eardrum which they set into vibration ation the middle ear bones transmit the vibrations to the liquid in the ccka in the ccka the vibrations are changed to nerve impulses and transmitted to the brain the ccka is probably the most sensitive of all the parts of the ear it can easily be injured by Extremely Loud sounds jet engines for example produce sounds of such high intensity that men who work near the engine must wear heavy ear coverings to protect the delicate cocka also in the inner ear are the three semicircular canals which are at right angles to one another these organs of balance also contain hair cells the cells lead to this nerve which is joined to the auditory nerve as our head moves it causes fluid in the canals to change position stimulating the nerve endings of the hair cells the impulses from the semicircular canals together with the impulses received from our eyes and muscles enable us to keep our balance so the pleasant world of sound exists for us because of the delicate structure of our ears to be sure they are functioning properly it is a good health Habit to have regular hearing tests hearing may be accurately tested by an audiologist using an audiometer a device that produces tones of varying pitch and volume the patient's responses to the tones from the audiometer can be shown on a chart to indicate the range of hearing for each ear loss of hearing may result from many causes most common cause involves the middle ear bones these bones must move freely to transmit sound vibrations to the inner ear but sometimes this movement is restricted as the joints of the bones gradually stiffen which impairs hearing this condition is called otosclerosis an ear doctor or autolist can detect and easily treat minor ailments of the year for more serious conditions ear surgery May sometimes be used to restore hearing but in many cases a hearing aid is effective to help restore normal Hearing in a person from the many types of hearing aids available an audiologist or autolist can select one that is best suited to the particular hearing problem sometimes loss of hearing May develop so gradually that we may be unaware of it unless we have regular checkups good hearing lets us enjoy the world of [Music] Sound by practicing the proper habits of hygiene we can ensure the good health of these remarkable organs of hearing the [Music] ears Oracle that's what is that is that a um no I'm thinking audible article something else anyways um yeah there you go there's your ears crazy complex system of hairs and nerves and weirdly shaped bones um there's a moody Institute of science film about about that and about how none of that could have happened by accident there was Evolution could not have come up with this solution This was um definitely some grand architect that kind of created this so all right uh so behind me I have another film on the scanner this one is semian animated and the the two characters they show up in other films that I have and I'll be honest I can't stand them I hate them um uh maybe not as much as you guys hate wondercat but Harve and Marv they um get under my skin so here's clean and neat with Harve and Marv enjoy to focus the picture and adjust the sound volume the the film will then be ready for correct [Music] projection two three get out there Randy Randy hey oh McDonald Had A F Me Oh Me Oh My that's e e IO it is I thought it was Old McDonald you're Hess no I'm Marvin come on back keep moving hey come on back what's that that's e those are football players boy are they getting dirty Jee hard that looks like fun I wish I were a real human so I could do that a real human you wouldn't like it sure I would being real would be fun fun tell you what let's watch and you'll see what you have to do if you're a human two three hey oh okay gang that's enough for today let's wash up for lunch oh Dad do we have to oh we're not that dirty Dr Parker get around here a little bit come on over here Randy sit down why do we have to wash anyway why wash for lunch well maybe I can give you some reasons our skin is a lot like this lawn now just as we have to take care of this lawn to keep out the harmful insects and weeds we also have to take care of our skin what do you mean I don't understand okay imagine that we we're looking at the skin here through a giant magnifying glass you'd find that the surface has many little openings called pors now out of the pores comes water we usually call it perspiration or sweat the water helps cool our skin the pores also release a kind of oil that keeps our skin from getting dry or cracked whoa is that really true wh how would I know I've never never worked hard enough to sweat but the oil and moisture provide a place for dirt and germs to collect germs are like little plants but they're so small that you can't see them doctors call them bacteria now if we want to see germs we have to look at them through a microscope a microscope is something that makes little things look real big now there are many kinds of germs and some of them can make us sick that's why we have to wash our hands before we eat it's not just to get rid of the dirt but to get rid of the germs so they don't get in our food and for the same reason we wash your hands after we've been to the bathroom because of the germs right all right do any of you Tigers know a good way to remove dirt and germs from the skin boy that's a hard question yeah let me think use soap and water yes soap and water soap and water soap and water water alone won't do it you need the soap to loosen the oil and dirt so that it washes away taking the germs with it did you hear that marf to be a human you have to use soap and water but har maybe washing wouldn't be so bad wouldn't be bad come with me I'll show you what you have to do to be clean and neat you're going to wash not me knucklehead come on now here's what washing is all about see he has to use lots of soap he even watch wases behind his ears and in all the little [Music] cracks look har he's even washing his feet sure humans have to do that now see how he has to rinse off all the soap when he's finished washing why hor why does he have to do that because humans like to get rid of the dirt dir and oil and germs and besides dry soap on their skin causes it to Chap and crack oh yeah I wouldn't like that either hey look Harve he's washing his fingernails with a brush that's because germs grow in the dirt under the fingernails and germs are bad for humans hey what what's he doing now if you're a human there's a thing you have to do called washing your hair boys too everybody but why har well when you're human your hair collects oil and sweat from the pores so it gets dirty and greasy germs can stick to it for some silly reason humans don't like that but I heard that clean hair looks and feels better is that right Harve don't ask me he's sure using a lot of water does he have to sure you have to use lots of water to get all the soap out of your hair dry soap in hair makes it look dead and awful and here's something else humans have to be sure to do a good job of dry dying off because germs grow in wet warm places do all humans have to wash and die like that Harve well they should every day every day right and do you know what else they have to do they have to put on clean underwear and socks every day they do right do you still want to be a human well come on I'll show you something else there that's what I've been looking for you've been looking for a shelf no knucklehead look you see what that girl is doing she's brushing her teeth right humans have to do that to get out the little pieces of food that germs grow on and germs cause teeth to get cavities cavities yeah I heard that Sugar like in candy is bad for teeth is that right harf right humans shouldn't eat too much candy not if they don't want cavities ah Harve that's right but look there's even more if you want to be human now she's br brushing her hair do you know why humans do that gosh no Harve well they say that brushing spreads out the natural oils so the hair will be shiny and healthy shiny and healthy gee Harve I think I'd like that well I'll tell you about something you wouldn't like lice lice what's that lice are little tiny bugs that you can get in your hair how do they get there one way is from using other people's Combs are wearing their clothing like hats oh I sure wouldn't want any little bugs on me nobody would hey what about those kids back on the lawn being neat and clean is good then they'll want to wash their hands and faces no they won't you'll see so that's why I think it's important to be clean remember those germs anybody that doesn't want to get cleaned up before lunch doesn't have to I do get no ger whoa well Marv I guess most people like to be NE and clean so if you're going to be human you've got to get used to soap and water and Marv Marv Marv where are you over here Harve taking a shower isn't so bad har if you start a little at a time some people will do anything to be [Music] human Lenny and who is it who are the other who's the other character Lenny from mice Of Mice and Men so Lenny George gosh you know that uh from uh all the Warner Brothers cartoons um you know Lenny and George Tye but they're hippies uh okay so we're I'm looking at the comments and so we are beginning to rank which is our least favorite animated characters and uh so we're saying that uh where are we with uh Harin Marv as a unit um together we're not going to separate them out compared to wondercat where are we at where does it go any ideas so harvar are up there as far as annoying and irritating um they are annoying and irritating but I I just I feel like wondercat because it's aimed at a younger population it it just oh really annoying so these guys are annoying but in a different way um but anyways so we we're we're basically we hate them um and you guys agree it's not just me that hates them it's just like all right um so thanks for joining us today I did not show any Martin Luther King footage today and it is Martin Luther King's uh birthday um which is why some people are working from home or at are at home um and uh so so let me put this uh I generally keep showing the same footage over and over again that's what I did for the last couple years and I realized like yeah you guys have seen this but uh in the comments uh I put a link to a a story that's on a local uh TV show or TV news station and uh they talk about never born seen video shows Dr King speaking at NCSU uh as the KKK protests um we digitized that footage for the Wyatt family uh and it was beautifully shot but really really horrible uh in that well so basically it was there was a March in downtown Raleigh of a bunch of KKK people and uh this was because Martin Luther King was speaking at NC State and then uh Mr Wyatt like films off the TV Martin Luther King speaking uh so there wasn't any like he he wasn't able to attend the uh the talk the speech but anyways that's that um uh it was phenomenal footage and that's why I like home movies I like showing home movies because they capture history they capture culture uh both good and not so good uh and the the clan footage was not so good it it felt I felt really bad it and so um anyways uh Martin Luther Luther King Jr he was you know he had his problems he was a human being but he did speak good things and um so I feel like it's important to honor him uh and not just by showing that compilation footage of him um and his funeral um and you know look beyond the I Have a Dream speech that they always are going to be trotting out because uh there's other works that he did that were really good the march on
