happy New Year everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mm films and um I'm wearing my goody Tama shirt which is uh San Rio's um apathetic um egg Yol who uh often times uh says things that I'm like I I I identify with that I feel that that's my internal voice so I'm big fan of goody Tama um anyways uh yeah it's a new year uh I am recording this show I'm not doing it live because I'm taking a break today um so good over Co but I still wanted to show you stuff I wanted to start with a clean start in 2025 a brand new start and what way to do that uh better than with soap so I have a series of films and advertisements about soap uh the first one of course is um my spirit animal soapie The Germ fighter who is a giant cake of soap who appears in a little boy's uh bedroom and uh is wearing a cowboy hat and uh also uh kind of speaks like a cowboy even though he has a non uh Western United States accent um and so soapie talks to us about the importance of being clean and how soap plays a part in that then encyclopedia britanica uh the film so soap where we learn about soap how it's made and what it does and then we are just going to just lather up a bunch of soap commercials a variety of different ones uh Ivory soap C Ivory Snow H some weird off like Brands you've never heard of of dishwashing liquid um maybe some uh detergent but it's all soap all soap so clean up our axe starts fresh crisp new uh I appreciate you guys watching today I hope you had a good New Year's Eve and I'll be back live tomorrow all right here we go enjoy [Music] Billy Martin is one of the nicest Boys in our town he's one of the cleanest boys too Billy always has been a nice boy but he hasn't always been so clean as a matter of fact for a long time Billy's parents worried about him they didn't worry just because Billy got dirt on on his hands and face they knew that a boy is bound to get dirty when he's playing cowboy and runs into a bandit down by the Corral Billy's parents did worry because he was so careless about washing when he should have washed he had to be reminded almost every time and even then he didn't do a very good job the trouble was Billy had the wrong idea about being clean wash wash wash they just want me to be a but then one night Billy had a dream at least I guess it was a dream I bet Cowboys don't wash all the time but you're wrong Billy it's not to be clean who said that who's there I did one of your best friends let me introduce myself soap's the name partner why you're a living cake of soap big is life Billy and I'm here to help you I can help you partner but I don't quite understand that's just a trouble so many boys and girls don't understand what a good friend I can be so I'd like to show you may I why yes I well then just lie down and close your eyes that's right now what do you see why I see a cowboy he's washing up that's right there's nothing about that cowboy is there he's a broncobuster he rides Wild Horses well Billy you and I must tame animals more dangerous than bucking Broncos I help you control animals that could make you sick now close your eyes again again and I'll show you the animals I help you control are called disease germs they are so tiny you can't see them except with a microscope like this man is using disease germs are dangerous because they make you sick if too many of them get inside of you and they can be on almost anything the children touch or handle even on things that look clean if you get disease germs on your hands and then put your hands in your eyes or in your mouth those diseased germs can get inside of you but you and I can kill most of the germs on your hands so they can't make you sick if we work as partners so be a germ fighter with me learn good hand habits boys and girls should wash their hands often especially at certain times wash your hands before doing anything that has to do with food before handling food in the kitchen before setting the table before eating at any time and always remember to wash your hands before brushing your teeth wash your hands after doing anything that gets them very dirty after playing games after playing with animals and especially after going to the toilet you and I can be partners in other clean habits Billy we can do a fine job together each time you bathe all over and of course you should take a bath or shower each time you've been working or playing hard not just on Saturday nights you should wash your hair often boys can do it easily each time they take a bath or shower girls should wash their hair at least once every two weeks you can see Billy that I am your partner but you have other help Health friends every Community has a health department just as it has a fire department and the police department and one of your best friends is the health officer he's a germ fighter too Health officers fight germs in many ways they know how to look for germs this health officer is testing a drinking glass from your school cafeteria and now a health officer checks the cafeteria Windows to be sure that flies can't get in flies carry dangerous germs on their feet Health laws say that food must be clean health officers must see that cows are clean and healthy so their milk will not have germs another Health officer the meat inspector make sure that meat is clean and safe the mark shows that this meat is clean but Health officers can't do everything for you you must be your own health officer Billy since germs can get inside of you through your mouth be sure that food is clean before you eat it be sure that dishes are clean before you use them for food never take a bite from someone else's food that's right break off a piece to share your cookie and keep food covered safe from flies when you eat outside remember flies carry dangerous germs on their feet when you drink from a glass be sure that it is clean it's a good idea to have your own drinking glass when you drink at a fountain keep your mouth away from the nozzle and there's one more important thing Billy your clothes you know a cowboy wears working clothes when he's out on the Range because he gets dusty and dirty but when he's ready to go into town after I've helped him wash up he puts on his clean clothes children get dusty and dirty when they play games you should wear old clothes when you play but when you're through playing when you clean up for dinner you should change to clean clothes you see Billy being clean in every way is an important part of being healthy and being healthy is an important part of being happy I see that now soie you are a good friend and partner that's right well so long so long partner and don't forget I won't Sophie and Billy didn't forget he's one of the cleanest Boys in our town now he's one of the healthiest and certainly he's one of the happiest [Music] [Applause] [Applause] Carl Mason is planning a class demonstration of soap making to make the soap Carl uses fat and Li first he weighs out the lie or sodium hydroxide as it is usually called in a laboratory since the sodium hydroxide must be in solution to make soap Carl pours the solid sodium hydroxide into water when they are mixed heat develops so Carl sets the solution aside to cool while he adjusts the balance to weigh out the fat needed he uses about seven times as much fat as he does sodium hydroxide this is clean waste kitchen fat that Carl collected at home it should make good soap the fat must be warmed before mixing the sodium hydroxide with it a mixing temperature of about 100° F gives good results the flame quickly warms the fat then Carl begins to add the sodium hydroxide it is the reaction between sodium hydroxide and fat to form soap what is the nature of this reaction let's consider this a molecule of fat consisting of a glycerin part and an acid part and let's consider these molecules of lie consisting of sodium parts and hydroxide parts now when these molecules interact the sodium parts of the LIE molecules go with the acid part of the fat molecule and the hydroxide parts of the LI molecules go with the glycerin part of the fat molecule this reaction results in three molecules of soap and one molecule of Glycerin fat plus lie gives soap plus glycerin this process is called saponification saponification is what occurs when fat and lie react in commercial soap making the glycerin is usually removed in about 10 minutes or as soon as the mixture of sodium hydroxide and fat has a honey likee texture it is ready to pour into a mold this mixture should stand sever several days more before it is used so that all of the fat and lie will react to form soap and glycerin Carl's soap has been standing for more than a week and he thinks it is ready to use it has a fine texture and should have good cleansing qualities but before Carl tries out his soap to see how well it will remove dirt let's take a close look at hands we say are dirty in a close view the skin would look something like this notice the oil film on the skin and the dirt particles suspended in it seen even closer it would look something like this the oil and the dirt particles coat the skin now when we use soap and water to wash our hands what happens for one thing the oil film breaks up into small globules that is it emulsifies and a layer of soap one molecule thick coats the [Music] skin the oil globules and the dirt particles closer still it would look like this the soap molecules not only free the oil and dirt from the skin but help keep them from becoming attached again if they touch a clean spot as the washing continues the soap films are indifferent to each other and so the oil globules and dirt particles can easily be rinsed off notice that oil globules are dirt particles that drop toward the skin during washing do not become attached again thus through washing and rinsing oil and dirt particles are cleaned away but a layer of soap molecules invisible to the eye remains on our hands even after rinsing now we will see soap making on a commercial scale this is the receiving yard of a large soap making plant here fats and oils arrive in Carlo Lots this man collects a sample from a tank car that has just come into the yard the sample he takes will be tested to make sure it is of good quality after testing the fat and oil in the tank car are pumped to the refinery here pipes lead the fattened oil to huge kettles the refinery man opens a valve and the oily mixture pours into the kettle here it is heated with a solution that removes acid impurities in a few hours when the impurities have settled out the refined oil mixed with bleaching substances goes to the filter press room these filters separate off the bleaching substances that have removed colored impurities from the oil a press man collects a sample of the fine clean bleached oil if the color appears satisfactory at this stage and after further tests the bleached oil will be pumped to the soapery to be used for soap making this oil serves the same purpose as the fat Carl Mason used in his laboratory demonstration in this room called the serery refined and bleached oils that have passed required tests are mixed with lie and heated to make soap this soap maker checks the mixtures in the kettles in this Kettle the operation of saponifying and purifying the soap has been going on for nearly a week this reaction is the same as in the laboratory demonstration the soap maker now makes tests to see whether saponification is complete the feel of the mixture indicates whether there is any fat that is not reacted the taste indicates whether any lie remains s this soap seems just right so the soap maker collects a sample for a more accurate check in the chemical laboratory soap that passes all these tests goes to the drying room the soap still in liquid form first falls into a trough and on to a huge revolving roller the roller carries off a continuous thin layer of the liquid soap the soap layer cools on the roller and falls in clean white ribbons a conveyor belt carries the ribbons of soap into a drying oven after drying the soap travels onto this Hopper from the hopper a measured batch of soap falls into the mixer the mixer operator opens the safety guards to pour in preservatives perfumes and other materials needed in soap making he adds these ingredients to give special qualities to the soap in a few minutes the mixing is completed then the soap drops onto this revolving screw that feeds leads it into the bar forming machine the soap leaves the bar forming machine in one continuous bar a knife cuts the soap into sections then fine wires cut the sections into individual cakes a moving rack carries the cake to an inspector's table the inspector places the cakes on an endless belt the soap is now ready for Staffing and wrapping and to start on its way to our home Ivory soap invites you to take a look at the
