Split-screen scenes of engineering drawing, masonry, and carpentry introduce this philosophical treatment of architecture. Architecture, properly observed, communicates much of the forces that influence civilization, of the character of the people who designed it and for whom it was designed. Roman architecture communicates pride and a strong sense of security; Medieval architecture fear of the outside world and a religion - oriented creativity; Renaissance architecture prosperity and a return to Classic pride.
