Animal Babies Grow Up (Rev)

[Music] Collie puppy only 2 weeks old and helpless their first food is milk from their mother every day they grow bigger and stronger and by the time they're a month old they don't need their mother's milk anymore now the puppies are 3 months old they're learning how to take care of themselves the puppies will keep growing until they're as big as their mother and look very much like her that's how puppies grow up different animals are born and grow up in different ways baby chicks hatch from eggs all birds do a baby chick has been growing inside this egg for 3 [Music] weeks the chick has to work hard to get out of the egg but finally it tumbles out wet and weak but only an hour later it's dry and ready to look for food with the other chicks 6 months later the chicks have grown up now they're chickens they can lay eggs of their own these aren't chicken eggs when they hatch baby robins come out they're much more helpless than baby chicks are baby robins can't leave their nest to find food for themselves their parents have to bring food to them but once a baby robin learns how to fly it can leave its nest when the robin grows up it looks like its parents and can find its own food just as they do screech owls grow up more slowly than Robins but even though these young owls aren't grown up yet they look very much like they [Music] father now baby ducks are more like baby chicks in the way they grow up from the time they're one day old ducklings can do about everything their mother can ducks are water birds and so are [Music] penguins father and mother penguin work together to build their nest and then take turn sitting on the eggs the mother Lays while one is sitting on the eggs in the nest the other one goes into the ocean for food penguins eat fish penguin babies have to Peck their way out of their eggs like all birds do penguin babies grow fast these penguins are only 8 weeks old and they're nearly as big as their parents penguin parents feed their babies and take care of them well [Music] most fish don't take care of their babies at all baby fish also hatch from eggs but their eggs are in water this baby trout still has part of its egg attached to it the little fish will get food from its egg until it's a big enough fish to get food for itself not all eggs that have been laid in water are fish eggs some of these eggs are hatching now but these are not baby fish they're really tadpoles baby frogs when they're born tadpoles look a lot more like fish than like frogs they swim like fish and they breathe underwater like fish but soon a tadpole begins to change legs start to grow first back ones then front ones soon it will lose its tail come out of the water and start breathing in the air the tadpole finally grows up and becomes a frog animals lay eggs in all sorts of places what will hatch from this egg an insect a tiny crawling caterpillar it spends most of its time eating leaves and growing and then one day the caterpillar stops eating it attaches itself to a twig the outside of its body gets hard inside this hard case that's called a chrysalis wonderful changes begin taking place the caterpillar turns into a butterfly when the changes are over the butterfly breaks out of the chrysalis the caterpillar grew up to become a monarch butterfly caterpillars change a lot when they grow up so do bees bees are insects like butterflies are and they hatch from eggs too the bees we usually see are grown-up bees many bees live together in a hive all of them hatched from eggs that the queen bee laid inside the hive baby bees that hatch out of the eggs are tiny whitish things that look something like caterpillars other bees feed them and take care of them that's their job in a beehive every bee has a special job to do when the baby bees are all grown up they'll look very different insect babies often change a lot as they grow up the ants we usually see don't look like ant babies nurse ants feed them and take care of them until they're grown up but many other babies that hatch from eggs do most of their changing inside their eggs when a baby snake hatches out of its egg it looks exactly like its parents except it's smaller baby snakes can take care of themselves their parents don't feed them or protect them after baby turtles hat from their eggs they aren't cared for by their parents as they grow up either but baby rabbits are rabbits are mammals they don't hatch from eggs at first they need a great deal of care they depend on their mother to keep them warm and feed them their only food will be their mother's milk until they learn how to find other kinds of food rabbits grow fast several months after it's born it will be as big as its parents these are young woodchucks like baby rabbits they stay close to home until they're old enough to find their own food baby skunks stay close to home too home is a hollow log Little Pigs they get their first food from their [Music] mother as they grow up they look more and more like their parents in a few months the young pigs are big enough to take care of themselves some mammals have special ways of caring for their young mother kangaroo carries her baby in a pouch for almost a year after it's born a baby kangaroo is called a [Music] joy opossums have pouches too but these babies have grown too big for their mother's pouch so she carries them on her back when the young opossums are old enough to take care of themselves they'll leave mother to begin families of their own animal babies grow up in so many many different ways this baby horse has just been [Music] born a baby horse is called a fo a fo can stand and walk when it's just a few minutes [Music] old it has a lot of growing to do before it can take care of itself but a horse grows up fast in just a year the F will be nearly as big as its mother and so animal babies grow up they get bigger and bigger and look more and more like their parents and when they're all grown up many will have babies of Their Own
