Complete Record: Illustrates the ecosystem on intricate, mutually supportive interactions of plant and animal life surrounding the great fig tree in tropical Central America., The complex ecological interactions which occur in the Central American rainforest are explored in this film focusing on the great fig tree, called Amate by the Indians of Belize. Biological events that take place in and around this massive tree are illustrated, including: 1) the role of insects in aiding the reproductive cycle of the tree through fetilization of the flower; 2)predator-prey interactions, particularly between the ferilizing wasp and its insect predators; 3) the role of the tree in providing nutrition for varied forms of life inhabiting the land and water surrounding the tree; 4) the daily cycle of activities that occur within the tree which provide an environment for the complex social behavior of animals. , Depicts the interdependence of the giant fig tree of Central America, called Amate by the Indians, and the minute fig wasp.
