Altered Environments-An Inquiry Into Growth Of American Cities

I [Music] since the very beginnings of civilization men have come together to trade the selection of trading centers has often been influenced by [Music] geography natural harbors and the banks of navigable Rivers were some of the first places men lived in large groups later as people moved Inland other places became centers for trade and economic [Music] activity from the small towns of the sea coasts and from The Villages of the Interior our cities have grown in North America where the growth has been rapid almost no long range planning has guided the growth of the Cities what do you think might be good about living in a city what do you think might not be so good about living here As Cities grow they spread out how has the growth and the spread of our cities changed the [Music] land each year many people move from the Central City to the suburbs what advantages or disadvantages are there to living in the suburbs [Music] if you work in the city and live in the suburbs you may have a long bus train or car ride 10 times a week or about 500 times a year [Music] [Music] what kinds of environmental problems do people create in our suburbs what problems are suggested here [Music] often as suburbs grow out from a large Central City many smaller cities are formed to provide the services and controls needed in an urban environment small cities often have difficulty providing these what controls and services do you think might be needed here [Music] suburbs use up lots of space how does this affect wild and Rural [Music] environments what is good and what is bad about the ways we use land for suburbs how could we make better use of the Suburban areas seen in the following pictures I [Music] what changes might you suggest for the Suburban areas we have just seen [Music] at night the cities and the suburbs provide a continuous pattern of light a plane flying along the east coast is seemingly above a city from Richmond Virginia to Portland Maine or in the west coast from San Diego to San Francisco some changes caused by the growth of cities affect the environment in places far away from the cities in what ways do cities and Suburban areas affect places a long way from their boundaries a [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] a [Applause] [Music] how can we improve our cities and suburbs what environmental consideration should there be when people are planning for City expansion and growth [Music] [Music]
