Cartoonists have a number of tricks they often use to express a feeling of motion in a drawing. Now, the most obvious of these are so-called speed lines. They look somewhat like this. And on the drawing of this little man, I can make him seem to move a little faster by fluttering his tie out behind him. However, these are only very superficial tricks applied to a figure that's basically very static and rigid. Now, let me show you a much more convincing picture of a man in motion. We'll draw him somewhat like this. Here the basic shape of the figure moves on the diagonal, leans way forward and the shapes themselves express the feeling of motion. So now when we add the cartoonist speed lines, they seem to flow right out of the figure itself. Now the expression of motion through design is the aim of all modern automotive stylists. As we saw in the drawings of the two men, the basic shape of a car may also express motion or like this one remain static. You can probably remember when superficial features used to be added to the basic shape of a car in an attempt to suggest a feeling of movement such as this radiator ornament for instance.
