This film is acclaimed by the critics as the most unusual picture of the year. Both narration and dialogue is in Spanish. Chico lives with his father. Having no neighbors, the boy must find his own play. This he does by making friends with the animals. Chico's favorite animal friends are a brood of little paisano birds, whose mother has been killed by a coyote. Each morning he catches lizards which he feeds to the birds. The young ones grow up and leave their cactus home—all except one bird, who, grateful for Chico's friendship, remains constantly by the boy's side. This begins the strangest friendship a lonely boy ever had. One day, Chico lies down for a short siesta. As he sleeps, a six-foot diamond-back rattler and its mate approach. Chico's ever-present bird-friend spots the dangerous reptiles. Instantly he tries to wake the sleeping boy, but he fails. Frantic, the eight ounce bird bravely goes forth to fight the deadly snakes. So furious is the little bird's attack that the smaller rattler retreats but the six-foot deadly serpent coils for battle. The bird continues his attack. He claws, lunges and feints and finally the snake lies dead at his feet. The little Paisano has saved the life of his benefactor, little Chico. (Recommended for curriculum enrichment.)
