how does a company decide who to hire the man who must choose is the employment interviewer his name is Jack Walden where his job is to be a good judge of people today he must find people to fill trainee jobs and several departments the people he chooses will be considered for specific jobs but the first step here is called a screening interview this morning Jack will interview three young women for the answer B ed for trainees they will not know they are being photographed as you watch imagine yourself in Jack's place can you choose the people you would hire you can hire one or two or all three after each interview you may want to stop the projector to note each thing you find favorable and unfavorable yes Dorothy will you send in the first applicant please thank you come in please come right in mr. Maggio how are you sure place is it all right if I call you Susan uh-huh you don't mind no keep you waiting long no dr. bet know what tonight is open uh-huh good yeah well Susan what we're gonna try to do is to fit your qualifications in with some of the jobs that we have so what I'd like to do is go back into high school okay um I had a business major my four semesters of typing and in the business manager they had you know you have a required subjects and I squat you have to take history and math and your English then I did have a business English and business machines that was with adding working mostly with the adding to sheamus's in a salesmanship class and that's just about all that it covered in the course yeah now Susan you mentioned typing how many words per minute can you type well when I was in high school from 45 to 55 but now I can type 60 oh really yeah and how's your accuracy with that he was not more than 4 errors it's one other business machines as you work with me they just had the adding machine dad feel that big ones and then the one where up you had to pull the handle down no I punch the key on your first job what did you how did you find that kind of work did you do and things like that well to me but it was too much routine no what were you doing I typed cancellations when people didn't pay the premiums oh sure was the same thing every day you know just typing names things like that so it was an interesting after a while if you thought that you had to be there for you know to you retire don't go crazy was not me in it how long did you work on my gym for six months mm-hmm did you give them a notice anything you like oh yeah two weeks then you went a short time and you worked again as a salesgirl Lincoln's uh-huh yeah I tried that that was interesting before they no bottom yeah that was over at Robert since that's a department store and I thought it was real interesting to me it you you could learn a lot just from the tables and staff that came in and about out you know you see a different side of it like when you're in a store you don't you know you see how you are when you're buying just quite interesting like that working with people till you really prefer than Jim a lot over the enemy unbidden Joe because you don't have so much routine and then you you meet people all kinds of people and you they tell you things you always get into a conversation with them only you know and then it's sort of a challenge because you get to talk to them and see if [ __ ] you can try to sell this product and change their mind see if you can really do it so it's a real challenging term if you have an interest in it you know anything is if you have interest and then you went to this other job and this was a strictly a clerical job uh-huh how long were you there I worked there for a month just a morning uh why didn't get along with my supervisor no matter um they seem to well at least she did always think she was right all the time and if anything went wrong when I was first working you know first you have to learn things and she was didn't take enough time with me to get John to say hash everything has to be done a certain way and things and like I said when you first out of school it's hard to adjust all this cuz you're more or less on your own sure in school you don't know well you have your teachers telling you what to do but yet you do things the way you want and you but then when you the job you have to do whatever what they want you don't do what you want we just didn't hit it off too well sure now you mentioned before that you had a fair attendance record on high school how's the attendance record in the punctuality on the job Oh wit that's good too good I'm easy always punctual oh yeah what about wages when you consider a fair starting wage here what's in for my you know experience and qualifications I'd say about 295 mm-hmm Susan why do you really want this job with the company well it's typing my skill and now if I do go on to continue an education with clerical I think it would be good you don't think the typing would bored you like I did on the other job you know hi Tony Jack Waldemar you want to hang your throat there lay it there you can hang another program I'll just lay it how much here okay you're on you today fine let's just start out back and say high school some of the subjects you took great you received a new subject okay in junior high school I was in Hawaii my ninth grade year so I didn't get I took basic course as I never was one to take business or anything that I didn't have to take and then in high school I only went to tenth grade quit that early yeah any reason for that to get married oh really now that I think about it you know I if I had to do over now with a you know state school not gotten married until I maybe fifty yourself six years yeah baby are you still married mmm-hmm it's not what I expected of course I expected all no hard work that I really think about it I wish I could go back to school I guess I wish I could be 16 all over it can't 17 17 so what have you been doing them since you quit school and got married just hanging around just hanging on yes anything don't working at all well I've been trying to know like what since I quit school nobody you know wants to hire me because they think just walk in the office and I say I don't have a high school diploma and they said well I'm sorry you know Lord have you thought about getting your education now oh I thought about it a couple of months ago thought about going to night school but then the day I with the night school we moved and then I just perished the pop figure well no I don't have to think about some other time do you have any specific goal what would you like to do if you were working I'd like to work in your office where I wouldn't have to type and I could just answer the phone and take notes and I can clean and everything I got experience doing cleaning in houses no telephone see and that's that's basically what I want a little bit of everything not just sitting there filing or sitting there typing or sitting there and feeling oh you know I want a majority of things because I like to run a mammogram machine yeah yeah I'd love to work with machines I would like to ask you one thing if they say the company did have some regulation on the grooming dress of the people would you have any objection to possibly changing your way a dress in other words Oh possibly call me down a little bit well no because I've been told that before like in where I in that little office I used to wear black nylon now I didn't know that in an office well there was older people you know they didn't like it so they told me and I quit wearing black nylons it they don't want me to wear bright orange or dangly earrings I won't but you know this is just the style also cuz I haven't been working you know so I really don't have nothing to base my wardrobe on I just go out and buy when I see it well Tony would you really if you had to say that you had any skills what skills would you say that you really had to offer our company there's not really much that you know I can really say or maybe that's why I can't get the job that no I do stuff and they show me how to do it I'm willing to do it but I say that most of them don't want trainees they want you know people who already know like went through bookkeeping or something in school were they you know where they can get the facts how they can do it you know right in now that your vision loss let's just start out back and say high school some of the subjects you took great you received on these subjects well in high school I had a business course at first mm-hmm and I dropped up the business course simply because I felt that it wasn't for me mm-hmm how's that well I just you know like I love music and my mind really wasn't on business at all because you know I was young at the time I just think here too much for school I just love to be around music mm-hmm this is all that I you know at that time until I got old and found out that music wasn't going to get me anywhere unless I become became an entertainer and right now I'm just working you know I'm looking for work because I really need it until I get myself really established in a good job in the United she's entertainment you know as weekend mm-hmm that would be nice can't you let's see now you do have one child mmm and who takes care of the child and when you're working my mother did you graduate from high school oh you did yeah want to tell me about that no I keep it to myself oh really yeah how far did you go in high school I went all the way except two or three weeks oh really yes because I was having trouble uh-huh did you get your high school diploma then afterwards no I am planning to go to night school mm-hmm to finish and get my mm-hmm so in other words you've actually been away from school for a couple of years oh yeah and you really haven't done anything constructive in getting the diploma no I had no more than just saying that I'm going to do it mm-hmm what are you doing towards that well I have a spelling dictionary young man in my spare time ago the liberian read up on a lot of things you know yeah my mother most of all along with my sister to give me spelling test you know I can accomplish it I'm not gonna let it give me down no I'm gonna cover it sure it was your attendance in high school well it wasn't too good oh really off and on and at that time what I mean by off and on my father was sick in the hospital and like my mother she would leave sometimes you know in the evening and she wouldn't show back up all at home and till about 9:00 to 10:00 that next morning and someone had to help you know with me paying the bills and keeping house while she was gone and since I was the oldest girl you know he appointed me to do it mm-hmm and this what affected my high school no I turtling me and knowing your father's sick and you don't know whether he's gonna eat the next day or not that's he worked at the department store I see yes that was you want to tell me a little bit about that job he pennies mm-hmm I work there you know I was doing maintenance I was doing you know a little bit of office where in the end I ran the elevator was aren't I carrying things out and bringing things and it was just you know like on and off work all around work mostly how was your attendance record it was very good it's one day that I miss that day I was sick that was just for a short time you worked there yes just for Christmas medicine they couldn't carry any longer no they could was just the agreement when you were hired yes it was nicely it sounds like you enjoyed this work I did I really did you know I'd love to work around people I really do Delores do you have anything on your mind that possibly you haven't told me that you feel would be one of your best attributes yes I like to see a letter that I've typed and and see how far it really goes you know and different things like this gives you a good feeling yes it does but I was working for my uncle I tied to let it mm-hm and it went to Hawaii and he got an answer back and he asked me to you know correspond and I did and it made me feel so good because I knew that I had done something worthwhile now the interviews are over and checked must decide if he hires someone he must have good reasons the company will spend a good deal of money to train if there was someone he doesn't hire he must have good reasons for that too if this were your job whom would you hire and why I'm just doing a test here to make sure that this is working working so who would you hire based on what you've seen Susan Tony I missed the other woman's name here we're not officially started yet but I got a lot of films I'm working so we'll just have some free pre-show films generally when I do an actual show live I have a film strip and I have not figured out how to show up some strip and then have people out in the internet world read that brilliant individual frames but one day I will figure it out work that you're really looking for well right now I'm looking for steady you know secure work steady job he's not encounter even and my future goals are eventually to end up in business administration mm-hmm which is you know like not from dull to enduring no what are some of your skills well I'm fairly global - typewriter spend almost three years now but I think I could still type out about 30 words per minute mm-hmm chard here and I know a little bit of well when you really call that a skill and most of the office machines like a Xerox machine if you have the second right I was interested here it looks like you went through a couple grades in high school with a business major was that right yes and then you dropped out was there any special reason for that donors discontent no I couldn't you know figure out exactly what I wanted to do in school was Susie you know how do you feel about it now that's your older I'm sorry about it don't know it's just one mistake sure like through sure getting out of school here now for a minute with your job background now there's one job here at the International Airport you haven't stated how long you were there was this a short time a long time it was her took a shot yes I was curious well you didn't put it on the application here so uh were you there are so many months so many years it was so many months it was three months mmm-hmm now the other job here you it looked like you were only there two months yes that's when I first came out of high school uh-huh a nice past year haven't recovered from that quite yet oh really what do you mean by that go ahead I'm interested me it was a funny thing I had you know I never been put in the position where I had to support myself and I've never been put in a position where I just had to put up with people I couldn't stand being around mm-hmm and doing manual labor - and this was really manual labor you know like it was 90 degrees in his shop all day long and then there's this this fabric dust flying all over the place sweeping the floor and if I'm not sweeping the floor I'm lifting 20 pounds 15 pounds and 30 pound rolls of fabric and that was the experience for a little probably wish you were back in school about that time anything I stopped thinking about it very seriously Nant what about your attendance record when you went to work I was a pimp straight straight down what are your future goals no way I see here you've taken off some correspondence schooling yes I decided to just kind of feel myself in some of the things I've been missing because when I could back in school is really gonna be difficult you know since I've been out for a while so I took a course in business management Oh that kind of you know so me that kind of you know made me make up my mind yes make my mind it you know administration was what I wanted mm-hmm that's sort of how I go but if even if I don't make it out think I'll be satisfied oh girl when do you find I'm starting school again tonight next semester this summer out the corn in high school again and then next semester I'm not for sure it all depends on whether I get it a day or a night job mm-hmm do you think it really makes a difference then if you have a plan for yourself to follow it does a man without a purpose you really doesn't have a reason to live it's only existing day-to-day mm-hmm and you know once you have a reason you know if you're a married man and your wife and your children if nothing else are you reasonably oven s you know no reason right there and you know for myself you know just saying well this is what I want is what I know I can do and can enjoy doing well you know that's enough mm-hmm make me you know Google whatever I have to to get there Waldemar have at your palm keep you waiting long sitting out there playing solitaire and cards were better boy Oh were you yeah Surrey look no I think it's pretty good busy yeah Paula what kind of skills do you have that you could offer an employer I used to print teen tours that printing job boss that pretty knife done I didn't put that down if that was for my father and I acquired that in high school well you did work for your dad then mm-hmm yes this business team tours he prints up his brochures you know by maybe 30 40 thousand brochures I have to put up you know and then that was monotony that was really boring if you sit down watch Heaven account chemical machine just rattle off maybe ten thousand an hour but you you know this certain that's indicated mm-hmm their interest is auto shop I really enjoy that class because I like mechanics you know analyzing how certain things work you know concentric and sectors camps no not a thing it's really interesting how some of these things work isn't it but what it must have taken they put under that that how an engine works now it interests me you mentioned you were a box boy you're still doing the stuff well that's what I'd like to do I was box boy for two days two days they fired me because they had too many people and they just laid off half the guys they have 30 people up there working 30 box boys and I gave all my time to it you know and I didn't really take many break I took maybe a timid break you know five hour shift and the to hit box bus was surprised so that was laid off the first place and you know I was surprised myself I felt sort of let down I mean that can't hold me back I should've trying to go get another job did something you know worthwhile mm-hmm acquire some knowledge about certain things did you like the other box boys that you work there well sure people very well I knew most of the boys because small community I enjoyed the job that's really interesting the people I'm an hey star tonight well he enjoyed myself nice to be a delivery boy doing it just that it was a deadline yeah there's another one of my great failures they had to have a boy that was a man really they this is what they told me I don't really understand why that they wanted men that were 25 years old which i think was right ridiculous drive their company trucks because of insurance company policy I thought it was rather ridiculous and but they laid off all his other boys that were working then there was Bob he was 20 years old nurse he was Dave he was 18 and they were all ID and well Paul do you have anything that you'd like to add that maybe you haven't told me yeah it might be important I enjoy work I work for a reason because I need the money and I feel if you have the need you'll get out do it sure you have to have my money no do it you know whatever it may be if you have to acquire this girl you'll do that too what's your job experience James oh I haven't been employed not I'm not officially really I you know I've worked well when I was nine I got a job you know working for a paper I held a job for four years I had a pretty large route for an annual employee I carried the packs on my back and I did it in two runs I had 50 customers and by time I was ten I had 60 customers and I kept that to the age of about 13 I quit then because I started getting jobs working you know cutting lawns and things and I'd that very much it was for the experience I did it and as far as that goes from from the from gardening you know I learned a lot of handiwork laying cement and laying bricks I know how to do all this type of work and fixing screens and windows and you know putting enough plaster walls and things like this you mentioned you're working at the boys club you want to tell me something a little bit more about exactly what your job is there I'm working there now and in the craft shop I'm working with kids and they're you know I'm teaching them how to mold and things like this I make mold for the amount of what I carve them up myself you know and they make things like bowls and things and Dom that's interesting they like to make you know the handles and knobs for the gear shifts and cars and it'll switch videos and all this no I better put a crystal set together over there it takes a little more time but uh I'm going pretty far in it this is what I'm doing just for the past week next week I'll be working back picking in the gymnasium mm-hmm and when I'm working there I supervisors make sure everything runs smoothly I have just you know the kids get together and play games you know like to play basketball football in the gym you know touch our flag football or something like this or I'll bring the mess down and line them up and we'll you know dump load has dancing free excellent there's no mm-hmm when did you start there well I started in August about six to six last year your tenants been good oh yes I miss 3d because um I was in an accident I been wired medical attention yes but other than that I if you know I'm always punctual getting back to high school did you have any shop work there in high school yes I had wood shop I had electronics I had one year of electronics I had a your wood shop and I made a chair there once I made old I made ashtrays I made bookcases and things like this no I want to go a little further to advance it and to carving all length you know lamps and things like this or maybe dashboards for cars you know there would there would be a lot of interest in that no brainer about a language in high school did you have a language well two languages I don't presently I know English in Spanish you speak and write Spanish fluently I guess I don't yeah yes I can't rightly Spanish do it now in the conversation is I do quite often you that's handy to have around it what kind of a grade point average do you think you've attained through your high school the first two years of high school well the first year I have gained uh an eighth grade point average and then a B I was just curious it didn't it just doesn't look too good when you went to so many there's so many high schools and is there any special reason yes why you'd make a change the teachers and all three schools were very nice but I had one incident occur it was a problem with a teacher it was a new teacher and he wasn't very experienced and I took the wrong attitude in this and it was just this one day he was I don't know he came in in a very strange movie mm-hmm and you sometimes you need something you know and you want to ask a person well you come up to the person very natural you ask them a question and you'll snap at you well you say maybe he doesn't feel too well you know when you you know constantly try to do this thing person you know snaps that you didn't this might be the way he is no hmm this person should be talked to her you know straight did you ever talk to him yes I did I talked to him after and I talked them once before now the interviews are over and check must decide if he hires someone he must have good reasons the company will spend a good deal of money to train them if there is someone he doesn't hire he must have good reasons for that too if this were your job whom would you hire and why Wow I love that series and just because it's actually not scripted it's kids doing a job interview and some doing much better ahead and thread up the next film which is also a job interviewing film made for the main four or by the US government [Music] okay we're a little early so I'm just gonna run something that is pre-recorded which is a quick tour of the AV geeks archive that I shot and I use to show when things go horribly wrong technology-wise this is actually shot stuff I have a old boarding house which now houses instead of people houses more than 25,000 films and so here's a quick look at all the films and this is not even all of them there's some downstairs there's some off-site but this is a lot of them and this is stuff that's been organized put in a database it's been grouped by size and by letter and this is where we draw from when we do screenings and we do things like we're doing tonight screaming live as you can see there's some stuff that's just piled up and we're working on that trying to make it more organized and people often ask me so you've seen all these films and the answer to that question is no no we've probably seen 6,000 of them and get new ones all the time so this is a way for us to watch some ones we haven't seen before is doing screenings like tonight so there will be some films that I have not seen tonight that will be kind of quote-unquote premiering them for the first time and [Music] so you'll be watching the first time that I do and so all sorts of things can happen in that case could be films in the wrong can could be upside down backwards could be very spicy you could fall apart all that stuff so you're experiencing it just like me all right so I'm gonna quickly fix my hair a little bit um hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer and thanks for coming out tonight I'm watching working it no it's what the a/v geeks saw it's an opportunity for us to show some films from our collection that we haven't seen before and and I picked the theme of jobs and work so job safety work getting a job investigating what career you might want to be in these are all the types of films we have we have lots and lots of films surprisingly I don't have any sex harassment films which I thought for sure I had I have certainly ones for women in the workplace I mean how to deal with one in the workplace and as a woman you know what is what can you do in the workplace maybe I'll drag one of the two of those films out but I was just recently looking for sex harassment stuff and I didn't find anything so yeah skip I was Homer that's me we're gonna watch two hours worth or so till we get tired of films all right so enjoy you yeah could you send in mr. Tracy Oh Tracy ah mr. Schoenberg looks like you've had some bad luck good job you see please actually I did so what happened how'd you hurt your leg well as a freak accident really it happened during a break at work some guys and I were playing some tackle and I just have in the fall a wrong way with three guys on top of me sounds painful sure as hell was I'd rather watch football than play it two H's on now mr. Tracy could you explain to exactly why you've come to welfare well I've been on this job I have oh yeah I'm a driver for a small laundry service you know pickup and delivery oh by the way as we talk I'll take down some notes that later on I'll have to ask you names and stuff sure okay well like I was saying I only been on this job I have for about five months when I had this accident plus my leg now I went down to the Division of Employment Security like my boss tomeato and they said I probably be eligible for workman's comp but the problem is I got a wife and two kids and one of my daughters the oldest she's got a kidney disease that requires constant medical care I have no insurance to speak of and the workman's comp really ain't that much so I was hoping maybe you people could help me until I get back to work I mean I don't want to be on welfare all my life welfare wouldn't want that either have you worked men's compensation famous started yet oh no the guy down there said I could expect to check next week well it seems as if you've already laid some of the groundwork ordinarily we have to check to find out are people coming to us I've explored all the possible avenues open to them that's the reason behind some of the questions I'll be asking you've made efforts in that direction next have to get something of an idea of your income over the next several weeks is there any income coming into your house why what helps to figure out how much financial aid you're eligible for does your wife work no my wife she's got multiple sclerosis well I'm sorry to hear that yeah it just happened all of a sudden after she had the last baby does your wife need to see a doctor regular not now but she does have a few prescriptions that have to be filled regularly is this driving for the laundry service the only job you held before no I was driving cap two or three nights a week - well as of now I I know that you had to work two jobs my next question is to find out if that well while you are unemployed if you're able to work in any other kinds of jobs so mr. Tracy do you have any skills besides driving not really uh I've been trying to get into one of those apprenticeship programs you know the building trades electrician said they might have a slot open in their Union but that won't be for a couple of months like Frisch's make real good money there so I hear do you feel you could work in a desk job or a bench job why you like a ceiling if I had to I guess I could let me make it clear mr. tracing we welfare do not force people to work when they are clearly unable to do so as it seems to be in your case it's just that people with the handicap or disability don't realize that they can be earning a wage and some other kinds of jobs mister you can get me a job over the next few weeks I'll be glad to take it that's fine mr. Tracey now back to the question of skills do you have any at all that you could think of how I can stuff boxes of paste labels if that's what you mean your boss couldn't find another job for you no like I said it's a real small place and in order for me to have a job there I'd have to bump somebody else and I don't have any seniority my boss been really nice about this and he said that he'd hold my job open until I get back to work how long will you be up at Dartford City Hospital said between 10 and 12 weeks it's a necessity for eligibility for us to determine the extent of your incapacity let me define incapacity the rules state that we must find that a few is the breadwinner incapacitated in other words you can't work I said and because of that injury you can't give you kids what they need you can't support them I see we also have to make sure that it was the injury that has kept you from earning your wage and that's some other something else like getting fired or something like that uh-huh also once you go back to work welfare doesn't immediately cut you off the caseworker will check to make sure everything is fine in water and then she will take you off I see your family your wife's family be of assistance while your leg is healing not financially I mean they can help with cleaning and cooking and taking care of the kids but neither my family or her family is very much money that's why I'm here I don't have a rich brother-in-law I can borrow from so as you see if money is the main problem right now look god I'm not looking for a handout I'll even pay back the money if I after that's not necessary is there any other income coming to your house not until the workman's compensation check start no all right so at this point we found out that you driving for a while do you service up until a few weeks ago right and that you're also driving a cab part-time right you have an injury you have a broken language event you from working in either one of those jobs right and you apply for workman's conversation okay then you have no other income coming in to your house right right not until the cops check start okay now let's move along now and try to find out what kinds of bills and necessities you'll need to meet and how much of a help we can be to you in doing that and keeping your household going oh do you rent yeah I found hundreds of months heated I'll need to see your overseas no problem uh-uh how old you was to trace 26 did you finish high school sure did about eight years ago are you taking any courses like trade school or college no like I said I've been working full-time did your wife finish high school she sure did how old is she she's 23 did she work before yeah but only for about a year but what she was a typist in an insurance company what did you do before this driving job huh I worked as a shipping clerk in a department store it was a lousy job though so you've only held two jobs since high school that's right that one on this one mr. Tracey when did you receive your last check from your job huh it's been about two weeks now okay well there's certain things we have to do to verify the information on clients give us it's not that we're calling people liars and cheats it's just that we have to make sure the information is factual to the point in your case I ought to speak with a doctor at the hospital treated you and your boss no problem I wanted to see a booklet and registration card from the department of employment I get that right here in my pocket oh good yeah yeah Bank or checking accounts we had a checking account the savings account we've been trying to leave a loan why are we supposed to oh yes people on welfare can't have some money in the bank oh here let me give you a pamphlet which explains all your rights is a welfare recipient and tell us exactly what welfare means in the state I want you to take some time and look it over very carefully yeah I'll look it over tonight thank you how much money is in your checking account oh I got about five bucks left in your savings account about three hundred exactly that's three hundred - okay let's see I'll have to be having to make that house visit your children aren't in school so they're not right okay so how about if we say Thursday ten o'clock fine fine and then you could show me your uh receipts and the bank book and everything like that fine no problem how much life insurance do you carry I got two thousand on myself and a thousand on the wife and kids each you know I do you want any real estate I don't and I'm pretty sure my wife doesn't either unless she's gonna rich uncle in aisle and he's gonna leave her castle a lot of us would mind that would we now oh by the way if you do get on edge you'll be eligible for food stamps until you get the first food stamps we can't provide you with a food oil you don't have to pay for it know what happens with a full order is that the value of it is deducted from your first date check well what about food stamps well they have different categories what happens with food stamps that you pay a certain amount and then you received food stamps which are worth more than you paid and some people paint next to nothing depending on their family size and income level no bits of blank mr. Tracy you've given me a lot of good information I could use in determining how much of a help we can be but I still need some more information it's one of these forms that I have here other any questions so far yeah let's say I do get on welfare when do I got my first check well good question right now we're in the middle of a pay period so you probably won't be able to get on the list in certain 1970s yeah I've always said some people were commenting about the fact that a guy says he's 26 and he looks pretty rough I've always been interested to look at how people look at different times in the past and that's where these films are really fascinating to see like well that person looks like they're 50 and oh they're they have a 1 year old kid and they're really only just you know 28 based on clothing things like that hairstyles people tend to look like they are skewed older in earlier film and TV like I've always wanted to figure out like how old Bob Newhart is on the Bob Newhart show and Emily his on-screen wife like how old is that guy is he supposed to be in during that time and is a psychiatrist so I know that takes a long time to get that I don't know just pleasant break from watching people play their first person shooters this next film is part of a series and I have a couple of films like I said are part of series where I've seen the other other films in the series and I know it's real good this one was made I want to say this is just before like early 1940s like before World War two but I haven't seen them so I don't know and it shows you when you get out of school what are possible things that you could be and this one is how to be a pharmacist so enjoy my work [Music] this is a microscopic view of germs magnified several million times when germs attack the human body they often cause serious and dangerous diseases such as diphtheria a vicious disease of children germs and unknown trillions upon trillions infest the earth they [ __ ] and maim and destroy human life to combat these germs and to protect public health modern medical practice enlists the aid the vaccines serums medicines and drugs the science of preparing and dispensing these medicines and drugs is called Pharmacy one of the oldest professions known to man and the key figure in this profession is the highly trained registered pharmacist he may be the man working diligently in the research laboratory seeking to develop new and better forms of medication all he may be found in a pharmaceutical plant controlling the strength purity and quality of drug products or he may be serving in any one of almost 60,000 retail drug stores throughout the country cooperating with physicians and the interest of Public Health although the corner drugstore is often an all-service institution its most important function is to serve as the health center of the community a doctor's prescription may seem mysterious to the average layman but it's all very simple to the pharmacist it may contain chemical names or abbreviated medical terms but the pharmacist understands it perfectly it is his responsibility to make sure that each prescription is filled exactly as the doctor has ordered accuracy and skill are synonymous with pharmaceutical technique an error in the compounding of a prescription could be injurious or even fatal to the patient so the pharmacist must take every precaution in his work he checks and double-checks both the instructions and the required ingredients after the medicine is compounded he transcribes the necessary instructions on the label each prescription has its own serial registry number which goes on permanent file to be kept on record as required by law annually about 300 million prescriptions are filled by pharmacists to be a pharmacist one must be a graduate of an accredited college of pharmacy and passed the state examination for a license the pharmacists in common with all professional men has a responsibility for ethical and conscientious service to his community for at one time or another human life will depend on his ability accuracy and integrity on the pharmacy shelves are many drugs that must be used only under professional direction many of these are restricted items and must not fall into unscrupulous hands before he can fill any prescription containing poisons or narcotics the druggist must obtain the purchasers signature and the dress and the reason for the purchase in a special ledger in very large drug stores the pharmacist devotes his time exclusively to filling prescriptions in smaller stores he may also be in charge of hospital and sick room supplies as well in these stores the prescription business is generally light so the pharmacist who is usually the owner sells many other products to maintain the sufficient volume of business success in pharmacy as in any other profession is achieved by diligence persistence and strict regard for professional ethics in recent years specialized prescription stores have become more numerous here pharmacists self-only pharmaceutical products and supplies as specialists they keep up with all current developments in the drug field and can supply physicians with expert information on this subject specialization is also required in the field of Hospital Pharmacy which offers opportunities for both men and women here pharmacists must compound drugs fill prescriptions prepare antiseptic solution serums and vaccines and make bacteriological and clinical tests those in supervisory positions are responsible for the purchase of medical supplies and for the general administration of their departments veterans Bureau hospitals also require many pharmacists or staff duty in fact the government is one of the largest employers of pharmacists many positions are open to trained men and women in the Food and Drug Administration to inspect commercial products for purity and quality in the Public Health Service to prepare and dispense medicines in cooperation with positions and in the Internal Revenue Bureau and other federal agencies all of these government jobs are under civil service with definite steps for advancement and usually offer permanent employment a degree from a College of Pharmacy is essential for this type of work the Navy and the army however prefer to train their own pharmacists since they're also taught to administer the medicines they compound a pharmaceutical background is invaluable for individuals with special aptitudes those with ability for organization can find excellent opportunities for service and professional and trade association those who like outdoor work can find opportunities in the growing of medicinal plants those who have literary ability may serve as writers and editors for professional magazines and trade journals and those with a competence to teach may become instructors in colleges of pharmacy preparations for a career in pharmacy should begin in high school a part-time job in the drugstore will determine whether a student has real interest and ability in this field by assisting the registered pharmacist the student also gains useful experience and helpful knowledge that will be of great benefit to him later while acquiring this practical experience the prospective pharmacist should study chemistry and biology a foundation is thus prepared for his college work which generally consists of a four-year course leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy if he needs financial assistance scholarships may be available to meet part of the college expenses after graduation he must pass a state board examination before receiving a license to practice most states now grant reciprocity to out-of-state applicants although only a small percentage of pharmacists are women the proportion is steadily increasing women make good pharmacists and opportunities are open to them in every phase of the profession many are employed as technicians and supervisors by drug manufacturers in this field registered pharmacists are in constant demand not only in the manufacture of pharmaceutical products but also a salesman and detail men to visit physicians and druggist and to give technical advice on the latest developments in medicines and drugs these developments are carried out by research pharmacists in the laboratories to them goes much of the credit for the advancement in the treatment of disease they strive constantly to find new medicinal weapons to combat man's greatest enemies the germs of disease daily headlines tell us of their results of lives saved by new drugs vaccines and serums in this dramatic fight to preserve and protect the nation's health the corner druggist plays a role that is just as important as that of the scientists in the research laboratory the clinic can be experimental station or in the end each new discovery finds its way to the local retail pharmacy the corner druggist acts as a distributor of medical products in every part of the nation for those who can qualify who combine manual dexterity and accuracy with professional integrity this field offers excellent opportunities for useful service to humanity for both men and women the work is confining and requires continual skill and diligence but the rewards are satisfying for this is work that contributes directly to human welfare study your interests and aptitudes and compare them with the requirements of this profession Pharmacy may become your life work [Music] all right that was great given the idea that uh I love watching films that talk about a place and you know pharmacies and how they have changed and it's it's clear that pharmacies are now all over the place and pharmacists each one of them has at least one pharmacist working there so there's this seems to be a big field that film was made 1948 if you don't know your Roman numerals and so this is post-world War two when there were a lot of people that were looking for work and trying to explore post-world War two what they were gonna be doing and there's many many many many many films in this series and it's funding your life's work series and really kind of paints interesting ideas of what different jobs were and what were the responsibilities and you know what you could do at given times different places alright so we're gonna show another series my it's actually kind of one of my favorites it's the same type of series but it's made in the 70s and it's the is a career for in black for you and there are many many films in this series and I pulled one two three five different films in this series alone six different films and what I like about this is the company that makes it they are known for using writing songs that are really fascinating and using like a choir or singing group to sing it like projector production musicians background singers and all the songs are super catchy so the other is in the series counselor films is named the company other films in the series is a fun or dumb destruction thunder dumb graffiti and I just love love the films so this one is is a career in the service industries for you enjoy [Music] [Music] yeah [Music] sooner or later each of you will say goodbye to your classroom to enter the world of work directly or after you get more education or training time spent now planning for that world of work may be the best investment you ever make this film will tell you about one big and rapidly expanding area of work before this film is over you should be able to answer is a career in the service industries for you [Music] in the service industries or occupations you help people take care of their needs protect them people are your thing at home at school at business on the street in the hospital in the air aboard ship in the park at the theater the bowling alley in restaurants the dry cleaners the laundry the barbershop for man and bees in emergencies and more relaxed moment the number of workers and service occupations grows almost three times faster than the labor force as a whole and employment is expected to continue to expand rapidly as population incomes and leisure time increase [Music] you'll find opportunity to move ahead in the service industries to make a career for yourself Advancement can come in higher earnings more responsibility you can move up to supervision to management you might teach learn a beginning job and it opens the way to learning the whole industry maybe to running a motel an industrial cleaning company a plant protection service many workers go into business for themselves become their own boss more than half of all beauty salons are owner operated and more than half of all barbers owned their shops [Music] maybe you like cooking are good at it or you get a kick out of taking care of babies or animals making people look better rest easier or feel more secure than the service occupations may be a good area for you to work in food preparation and service is the largest of the eight groups of service occupations included our chefs and cooks bakers waiters and waitresses stewards counter workers hostesses and bartenders with our expanding population with more and more people eating out more often people with food know-how are always needed lodging services is another category this includes hotel and motel managers and their helpers housekeepers maids and Houseman doorman and bellman those entering the lodging services have a good chance to move ahead generally hotels and motels promote within the organization building custodians make up another many of these maintenance people work after in normal business hours clean up and make office and other buildings ready for the next day's work as the number of office buildings and apartment houses continue to increase the services of building custodians will be more and more in demand no organization can go too long without the service of building custodian many jobs are lumped into a fourth group personal services barbers Messrs bath attendants animal care attendants airline stewardesses and ship stewards tour guides train attendants nursing aides and orderlies of whom there are almost 1 million mostly in hospitals cloakroom attendants and beauty operators what do you need to be a personal service worker in general the desire to do a good day's work as for the specifics they bury with the job such as skill with your fingers and artistic eyes liking people and being able to satisfy others as well as yourself with what you do housekeepers laundresses gardeners chauffeurs maids valets companions and governesses and general cleaning help fall into the domestic service grouping some people working in homes can live in often becoming a member of the family traveling with the family at times to working as a house cleaner gives you a chance to choose your days and hours in another category amusements and recreation services are workers in bowling alleys and billiard partners on golf courses and ski slopes on tennis courts and it swimming pools and by the season pushers and wardrobe attendants in the theater workers at fairs and carnivals with the increase in leisure time a shorter workweek more vacation time more and more services will be needed by the seeking recreation and play another area is apparel services including professional dry cleaners and closed presses laundromat and dyers those who repair our shoes tailors and seamstresses if you like working with the machinery designed to keep today's fashion conscious world and clean and freshly pressed clothes you can find satisfying work in the apparel services viii group is the protective services staked and city police officers and detectives county sheriffs and bailiffs FBI Special Agents government guards and air marshals guards and Watchmen patrolling industrial plants schools and other buildings firefighters [Music] and inspectors many an important person started out in law enforcement services by study by using free time advantageous lis they were able to become head of a department a district attorney a high-ranking federal official the educational qualifications you must have very greatly in the service industries FBI agents must have a college degree two years of college are preferred for airline stewardesses those who want to become barbers or beauty operators are required to have specialized vocational training high school is the minimum requirement to become a policeman or fireman and it can be important to you in any occupation in some jobs general made waitress Hotel bellman for example no educational requirements are specified what kind of person should you be to succeed in the service industries all right all are too much to expect but most service workers deal directly with the public so you have to be good with people get along with a pleasing manner and appearance are especially important for the theater usher checkroom girl waiters you need good judgment to be a store or hotel detective or Travel Guide being cheerful may be difficult at times but people will respond [Music] spittle attendance particularly must be dependable [Music] endurance is especially needed by a porter lifeguard or window cleaner standard hours of work prevail in many service occupations some however start after the normal work day firemen often draw 24 to 48 hour Duty stretches must sleep in [Music] waiters and waitresses often work split shifts have time off between the lunch and dinner hours and must work sometimes on holidays and weekends now what about pay in the service occupations getting rich may not be as likely as in many other career areas but you can live comfortably tips are important in many jobs particularly if you're a waiter or waitress but there are other rewards satisfaction in doing for others where our jobs available pick a location to your liking odds are you'll find service occupations looking for help is a career in the service industries for you you may see yourself in one or more occupations [Music] but you want to know or find out about the many other career opportunities in the world of work before you make a decision you'll want to see the other titles in the library of career counseling films to talk with your school counselor and teachers and your parents you'll want to dig into occupational information to find out for yourself and then some all the careers you like and are suited for to choose your career choose it with the help of your school guidance counselor who can advise you on your prospects what further education or training you'll need and where and how to get it let the local office of your state employment service help you to understand your abilities interests personal traits and give you the local and wider picture of the work you want to do job opportunities requirements wages and conditions what lies ahead plan ahead and prepare so you'll be ready to move on to further education or training or directly to the first rung of the ladder to your rightful place in the world of work think they had can't remember what how many it said there but there's at least 20 different and it's just beautiful you see all these 70s people working it's funny that they lumped the law enforcement in with a garment apparel and sales and people who work in restaurants although I do think they break it out and they they do have it in a separate thing as far as a government job or as a law enforcement so I'm holding the film because it's you see it's got company here it's um it's because the plastic reel is bent and that can cause problems like the film building up on the outside of the real and which has happened before and is really a giant pain in the butt to actually fix I've had that happen more than once sometimes actually during a show with the bottom with a projector no fine alright so I don't know if you notice right here if you don't know who I am maybe geeks we collect old educational films and show them to folks like you there's a way to donate to the a/v geeks we are this next film is part of a series called your job made in early 70s I love the early 70s I grew up in 70s so switch over I'm gonna change the type and this is all about when you get a job how to fit in and it's for people that are fresh out of high school or fresh out of college who don't have a cool so enjoy [Music] Lloyd mr. maryk wants to see you me Lyde come in sit down I'm afraid we've got some bad news for your Lloyd we're gonna have to let you go now let me explain why I lied when you first came to us there was no question in my mind that you were able to do the work the same same time I was a little worried because you never seemed to be able to get it without question Bornmann doesn't have what it takes to fit in here what does it take to fit in well for most companies there are certain basic principles you can follow or not follow let's consider Lloyd's case we'll go back to the day Lloyd was hired as part of the usual orientation company policies were carefully explained to Lloyd by the personnel director the hours here are from 8:30 to 5:00 with 45 minutes for lunch oh there are two 15-minute coffee breaks one in the morning one in the afternoon now you're allowed one sick day per month and if you can't come in be sure to call mr. Medwin useful information intended to help Lloyd get along on the job but he didn't think it was important now about you paid and we paid twice a month on the 1st and the 15th now when you get your check you'll notice that there are some deductions we take out for Social Security and withholding taxes and out Lloyd's mind was a hundred miles away this paid for by the company here's the employees handbook it goes into detail on everything that I've mentioned the man tried to do everything possible to help Lloyd get started but by the time Lloyd got home he'd forgotten most of what he'd heard and he didn't even bother to look at his employee handbook much less read it he left it with some other papers which were eventually thrown out lloyd started his first day on the job not knowing the rules and policies of his company he was in trouble almost from the moment he arrived 10 minutes late I was wondering if you were gonna show up well I miss my bus well let's get started I want you to meet Jack Marx Jack this is Lloyd barman that Anila I'd like you to introduce him to Ken and Larry in the others be glad to be sure he understands what everybody does so he knows who to see for what I understand Jeane pardon me just a minute but I'd like you to meet Lloyd Bornmann Lloyd this is Jean Martin Irish secretary and when she takes care of our correspondence this is ken kiefer you can find your plans for well every product that we've ever made Larry Cox now if you need paper anchor a new pin or maybe even a t-square Larry's Amanda C Paul sets our product manager now most of our work comes from Paul his designers get the ideas and we draw them again Lloyd didn't really listen he didn't listen to the names of the other workers or to what they did it didn't occur to him that he'd be depending on them later to get his job done I want you to go through each one of these drawings later mister Medwick gave Lloyd his first assignment he explained carefully how he wanted the drawings done be sure to make up a separate specification for each item don't put it on the individual drawing because there isn't room you'll just be wasting your time now I want simple orthographic views front top and side and if you run across a part that you think needs an oblique projection will you check with me before he was Lloyd understanding directions it was hard to tell so mister Medwick asked him do you understand you're sure well good you can get started but when Lloyd got to work he began to realize how much he needed the information he'd received and forgotten say where can I get a beam compass what's that guy's name in production who can give me the dimensions in this part where's the title supposed to go where do I find the specs on this the other workers didn't mind his questions at first but after he'd asked the same question for the third or fourth time once Lloyd had the answers he was slow in getting started he kept finding other things to do personal phone calls trips to the water cooler he took more time than he was allowed for coffee breaks and for lunch finally he got to work and finished a drawing now this is pretty bad look at the smears you've got in here and when you mark a centerline I expect it to be Center look you're off set up on both of these down here now look at this lettering here in the first place you've written out every word they should mister Medwick tried to point out what was wrong in a helpful way now in addition to all these other things Lloyd you've got a wholly unnecessary few here it's not my fault jack told me to do it that way as the days went on instead of learning from his mistakes Lloyd made new ones rather than wait to punch out he decided to skip it if he had bothered to read his employees handbook he would have learned that a timecard is needed as a legal record of a workers hours ID I think you understand why it is that we're letting you go I mean it isn't anything that has been so bad increasingly Lloyd spent his time blaming other employees and the company for his mistakes rather than learning from goodbye Lloyd better luck on your next job hello Stan in getting a replacement for Lloyd mr. Medwick hired Stanley Edwards a man who seemed almost an opposite of Lloyd tell me a little bit about your background I got all these in my drafting classes I think I could do a good job Stan was alert right and eager he seemed to be an excellent prospect when Stan talked to the personnel director he paid close attention and asked questions perhaps too many questions instead of twice a month why don't you pay every other week then we get our checks always on the same day it'd be easier to budget no that's true but our accounting department closes their books at the end of each month if the pay period closes at the same time it saves them lots of time and work now if the pay period overlaps then Eric responding to Stan's questions took a great deal of the directors time but he didn't mind he was pleased to find someone who seemed interested in the company stand took the employees handbook home and began to read a good start until he came across some rules that didn't make sense to him he didn't waste time trying to understand them his mind leapt ahead to ways of changing the rules and to ways of getting around the rules to suit himself stan was eager alright eager to please himself but not to fit in arriving early on the job the first day standstill looked promising to mr. Medwin his fellow employees were the first to suspect that something might be wrong this is a standard which ken kiefer that's RunKeeper glad to meet you Ken have you been at this job long what are you thought of using Michael you know I saw a system that uh uh Acme engineering that took up about 1/10 of the space it was instead of simply learning each man's name and what his job was Stan began giving advice maybe later after he had proved himself some of his suggestions might have been welcome but now he was just a new employee who should have been trying to fit in mr. Medwick began to realize that Stan might not be right for the job when he started explaining to him how he wanted the work done Stan interrupted several times with suggestions for improved ways of doing it before his boss had a chance to finish mr. Medwick had to interrupt Stan to explain why he wanted it done a certain way he didn't want to discourage him from making improvements but there were reasons for doing it the way it was done and mr. Medwick went over them in detail finally after the long explanation Stan seemed to understand without any further delays he got busy and started to draw but Stan's first drawing showed he'd never really listened he put in views not called for and he'd changed the format of the plate when mr. Medwick tried to explain again why he didn't want it done that way Stan argued with him insisting that his way was better again mr. Medwick went through a long explanation which took time and cost the company money in the days that followed Stan continued trying to change the way things were done he didn't seem to care if anyone wanted his advice or not [Music] you notice that the CBS hour series is more efficient and less heat buildup and also puts out more tracings per hour but Stan mr. Medwick would like to see you in his office mr. Medwick hired Stan to make drawings not to reorganize his department but Stan couldn't seem to follow the routines of the company he wasn't able to fit in so Stan was also let go this time imagine that you're being hired by now you've probably got an idea of things a new employee can do to fit in would you do better than Lloyd or stand would you make an effort to learn and remember the rules and regulations of your company or would you be annoyed or a stand would you read through an employee's handbook and try to understand company policies or would you use your time trying to think of ways to change things or would you disregard it altogether when introduced to your fellow employees would you forget their names or not even hear them as Lloyd did would you take up more of their time than necessary as standed how would you respond in hearing about how your job is to be done would you be thinking about how you would do it or not really listening do you think you would do better after receiving your instructions would you delay getting at your work or give advice to others on how to do their work if you dug right in would you do it your own way or the way your company wants it done having done your best what would you do if your boss pointed out mistakes give him an argument an alibi or would you listen carefully to be sure you understood what you did wrong so you wouldn't make the same mistakes again how would you do would you be like Lloyd and do two little would you be like Stan and try to do too much how would you fit it [Music] Oh Stan and Lloyd those guys I loved watching that film Stan is such a suck-up know-it-all it gives me a great joy to see him get fired hmm so over the years I've done different screenings on job films and job related films and I did this one where I had two projectors going at the same time and then I gave a vocational aptitude tests at the end and then we came up with graded them while people were watching the films and basically assigned them what jobs they were gonna be good at and we had like the little like scantron sheets and all that that we made and it was a lot of fun and I don't think anybody took our advice but some people ask me like hey so what did you go to school in to do what you're doing now and I didn't really go to school doing film related stuff I was in computer science and then I was in graphic design and all the while I was slowly collecting educational films that I got at the state surplus auctions and watching them for fun and somehow this turned into a job so there you go all right so we got one more vocational film on a potential career thing back from the 40s and then we will bust into a genre that people love work workplace safety films big fan I have shown many many many over the years and delight and showing them I don't think I've shown any particularly gory ones although I don't know if I haven't seen some of them so we'll see but they're entertaining nonetheless so this is another from the finer life work series and I think I still think this job holds up I think that they should be training kids on this type of work because they can make a lot of money there's a big need for this type of work so this is plumbing you [Music] become so common most of us accept its luxury without ever stopping to think of the work and planning that went into making it possible granted without realizing the effort and skill behind the intricate system of pipes that make up this convenience here's the man responsible for this accepted necessity the plumber but being a plumber is a lot more than just fitting pipes together the plumber plays a leading role in helping to safeguard our health and his knowledge and skill cover many crafts he must be able first to read blueprints so as to have a thorough understanding of where each pipe and fixture is to go and be able to plan his work to coincide with the many other operations going on during any construction he must be able to operate the various tools and machines used in fashioning his material pipes must cut to exact length to meet specific requirements and much time an energy can be saved by making these cuttings at a bench instead of in the clamped quarters where the actual installation takes place threads must also be cut in order to provide a means for joining the various sections these are cut with a special dye designed to give them the necessary depth and paper and caries use to cut no more threads than are actually needed to ensure a tight fit then when the various sections are cut and threaded the plumber joins them together with suitable fittings a coating of joint compound commonly called dope is applied to the threads to ensure water tightness the good plumber knows that however strong the joint may be it must be watertight from the main supply line in the basement the vertical pipes or risers lead up through the floor to the kitchen and bathroom houses are usually planned with the bathroom directly over the kitchen so that the same pipes will serve both then from the risers the other sections are fitted into their proper places between the floor joists and wall studying and here again the plumber must be a man of care and forethought in his planning as most of his work is done before the building is far advanced a plumber who has to tear out a wall for a forgotten pipe will find himself very unpopular the plumber must also understand sanitary laws and follow them through to the letter for plumbing is by no means confined to getting water into a building it is also his job to get it out again the disposal of waste called sanitary plumbing requires careful planning and skillful installation for it is here that our first line of defense is set up against disease chest iron soil pipes are used for this purpose these are larger and heavier than the incoming supply lines and their connections are made with overlapping bail joints cast on the end of each section these joints are sealed by first being coughed with oakum after which molten lead is poured in around the lip of the pipe to completely seal the connection the plumber must also be able to join sections of lead pipe in completing certain installations this is done by fusing the ends together in a sheathing of molten lead to form one continuous pipe of homogeneous metal layers of hot lead are successively poured over the connection and are shaped into a smoothly rounded contour this is known as wiping a joint and calls for considerable dexterity to prevent serious burns the installation of traps under all fixtures is necessary to prevent sewage gases from coming back up the drain and escaping in the house the action in the trap is simply that of catching the last part of the waste water and holding it as a block in the bend or elbow of the pipe but to make the trap function properly and prevent the last point of water from siphoning down the drain one more step is necessary a vent pipe must be installed to maintain atmospheric pressure in the drain system and thus prevents ionic action for this occurred the purpose of the trap would be defeated these bent pipes are extended up through the building to the roof where the sewer gases may be harmlessly expelled and here again the plumber has a chance to show his versatility led fleshing must be made to fit around the upper part of the vent pipe to prevent rain from leaking into the building where the pipe extends up through the roof the lead sheeting is first formed into a tube by bending it around some convenient object such as a pipe then when the correct size and shape is reached the overlapping edges are fused together into a neat seam off times he must become a Mason catch basins are required in some localities to catch grease from the kitchen sink and prevent it from entering the sewage system and causing stoppage this calls for trowel and mortar and again the plumbers versatility is put into action to provide the right treatment for each situation after all the pipes are laid the fixtures are installed some must be in place before the walls are finished such as a bathtub whose contours blended to the walls and floor other fixtures may wait until the plastering is done in such cases extra care must be used to prevent scratching or otherwise marring the surrounding walls or woodwork during these finishing touches the plumber has the satisfaction of doing with justifiable pride the final results of his skill and in line was comfortable efficient living the laundry tubs have come to be regarded as a necessary part of every home a well-planned laundry is appreciated by every housewife another convenience of the well-planned home is the automatic water heater it provides an ample supply of hot water for the laundry kitchen and bath which includes the shower the automatic thermostatic control operates the heater without any attention from the owner but home installations are by no means the extent of the plumbers realm large industrial concerns offer numerous opportunities for his talents refineries such as this require constant maintenance as do many other concerns all over the country such as laundries food processing plants and companies requiring extensive use of steam electrification of farms will do away with hand pumping and electric pumps will call upon the plumbers proficiency in the installation of rural water systems then - there are the jobs offered by municipalities the huge water mains which interlace our cities require the abilities of the experienced workmen here amid craft surroundings the plumber must apply the skills of his trade for on his proficiency depends on whole city for its water and its health there's always work for a good plumber whether it be installing a city water main or repairing a leaky faucet homes are more numerous than industrial installations and there are always small repairs awaiting the plumber who has the time to fix them these home repairs provide a good share of his income most men in the trade are journeyman plumbers employed by a plumbing contractor or master plumber who is licensed by the city and state this is his badge of state acceptance which signifies that he has met the minimum legal requirements and is licensed to perform work in his state some cities require a local license the master plumbers work includes the planning estimating and supervision of the job often he maintains a fixture showroom and employs salesmen to help prospective customers in the selection of equipment for their homes if you want to become a plumber in most cities you must start as an apprentice under the supervision of a licensed master plumber in some cities the apprentice is required to attend a trade school part-time to add to the practical training he gets on the job here he gets instruction as well as actual practice in all phases of the work he acquires skill and using various tools and learns how to put different materials to their proper use all under the close supervision of competent instructors his studies also include mathematics as related to plumbing to help in figuring pipe sizes and carrying capacities as well as help in the making of estimates errors in estimating are costly and result in loss of property to low and customers if too high when the period of apprenticeship is over and the state and local examinations are passed the apprentice becomes a journeyman plumber then after a period of time as a journeyman he becomes eligible for his own license as a master plumber to go into business for yourself requires more than technical knowledge and mechanical skills you must have business ability as well and enough capital for tools and office and a truck but whether you work for yourself or for someone else it's important to be happy in your job and this means that it must be the kind of work you enjoy doing it's a job for a man who likes to work with these fans and isn't afraid of getting them dirty for such a man Plumbing offers a fine opportunity for making living [Music] so that one was a little shrunk and so I actually had here so you can see so there's the film that's being rewound and you know you can see it's actually being rewound down here is a gate that has a has a camera in here and it aims at the frame and there's a little pulse every time it hits a frame it pulses said that you don't get the flicker there's a sound head which is actually before the film which is not the case with projectors projectors they actually after the film so there's a weird the film will stop but the soundtrack will keep going and that's because there's a delay that's built into the tell us it is a German tell us any that I bought new seven years ago I'm very expensive but pretty cool to workhorse that's why I use it and we've done a year's worth of these streaming events everyone freaks out like I don't know if you were watching the watch it on when it's sprayed film everywhere was a wacky event all right time to watch some safety film and we'll get started with a really great one they're all really great what am I saying office safety the thrill seekers this is a Center on film and Centron was a company based in Kansas Lawrence Kansas and it's one of my favorite film companies because they tend to be more down-to-earth not so like the assembly line like a senator like a coronet or Encyclopedia Britannica which we're cranking out like you know two films a week something like that this is hold on I'm a pact issue my work this might be a tension issue which means that I might have to skip ahead and do something else and then get get a decent pack on this when we talk about a pack we talk about how tight the film is on the reel and if it's not tight enough and the tension of the telecine he doesn't work out it's actually weird it doesn't get tense bone work okay here we go so here's a office safety the thrill-seekers [Music] [Music] if you're like most office workers you probably don't give a lot of thought to your safety on the job this is understandable after all an office job doesn't seem to present as many possibilities for serious accidents as some other occupations [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] yes the fact is an office job just doesn't seem all that hazardous and that's a problem you see some people enjoy living dangerously they crave the excitement that an occasional accident creates for these people we'll call them thrill seekers an office job just seems too safe perhaps that's why they make such a concentrated effort to break all the safety rules take a simple desk drawer for example the safety rule here is of course close the drawer as soon as you're finished using it the true thrill seekers are not afraid to ignore this simple rule and thereby break their usual office routine if not a leg file cabinets can be used to stir up some excitement too you probably use the handle to open and close a drawer because you think it's the safe thing to do and of course you're right some workers however prefer to add an element of danger to this routine task by making it a test of their hand speed they just grip the drawer above the edge and give it a healthy show of course only dedicated thrill-seekers will try their hands at this sport [Music] athletic thrill-seekers sometimes participate in a more advanced form of file cabinet competition they simply open more than one upper drawer of a top-heavy cabinet and then try to hop out of the way when the thing falls over supply cabinets offer some thrilling possibilities as well normally office workers find their visit to the supply cabinet to be dreadfully safe and uneventful experience that's because safety promoters insist that all materials be stored inside the cabinet but office thrill-seekers have learned that storing a few things on top of the cabinet makes the quest for a box of staples much more challenging they're the people who believe that a man's reach should always exceed his grass it's a masochistic belief at best the thrill-seekers enthusiasm for taking chances is especially evident whenever things have to be lifted or moved about the office of course sensible workers never try to lift more than they can easily carry and when lifting they keep their back straight and their head up letting their legs do most of the work thrill-seekers they are rarely concerned with proper technique and too impatient to let the maintenance crew handle those really heavy items perhaps these facts explain that peculiar posture displayed by so many office thrill-seekers if you're a safety minded person you probably use a stool or stepladder to reach high shelves it is after all the safe thing to do office thrill-seekers on the other hand employ more adventuresome methods of elevation one can only marvel at their willingness to risk life and limb [Music] in their quest for excitement creative thrill-seekers find ways to inject an element of danger into all kinds of ordinarily safe office routines for example there are probably few activities in life safer than sitting properly at a desk safe but a hardly a thrill a minute so the thrill seeker prefers to perch on the edge of the chair thus rendering the active sittings significantly more hazardous those who have mastered this front flop technique without serious injury usually move on to a more advanced and dangerous maneuver the thrilling back flip from the supine most thrill-seekers have found a simple way to make their comings and goings more exciting they come and go faster atchoo running to that important meeting isn't as safe as walking but it's certainly good exercise Plus running enables thrill-seekers to make a spiky impression on their associates especially at those blind corners you've probably noticed that there's little excitement in maintaining safe uncluttered aisles and walkways office thrill-seekers have noticed this too and that's why they did light in transforming those aisles and walkways into a hazardous obstacle course they employ all kinds of items for this purpose telephone and electric cords a strategically placed purse or briefcase even beverage spills which of course they never bothered to wipe out here their beverage spills litter and pencils can make for a truly memorable business trip especially for those who fail to use the hand ring like stairways those solid doors found in most offices offer significant potential for excitement experience has taught you to approach such doors with caution and to grasp the handle before getting in front of the door then if someone opens the door suddenly you can easily avoid being struck this is important because office thrill-seekers make it a point to shove every door open with as much force as possible they get a kick out of teaching others just how dangerous a door can be one of the hallmarks of office thrill-seekers is their careless disregard of even the most elementary safety rules including those dealing with fire prevention hence more serious minded workers should always be alert and ready to take corrective action it's also wise to know where fire extinguishers are located and how to use them another distinguishing characteristic of thrill-seekers is their devil-may-care attitude toward office equipment while safety minded workers heed those warnings to be careful and avoid distractions when using a paper cutter thrill-seekers prefer to live dangerously affect which may account for the uncommon shortness of their neck wear and/or fingers [Music] of course sensible workers are especially careful with electrical equipment they unplug and report any electrical device that develops a short-circuit or other malfunction thrill-seekers on the other hand refuse to be intimidated by a few frayed wires sparks or tingling sensations instead they regard any sudden surge of electricity as a small price to pay for a more exciting light if you have any co-workers who show signs of being thrill-seekers enjoy their company while you can after all they tend to be a vanishing breed [Music] so they didn't get a credit to the narrator so I loved that scene of the woman of dangling from Pia the shelving and then fallen it's so good I mean this film is intentionally a little slapstick and maybe we should watch it backwards because it's either it's watching somebody's falling up a set of stairs this would probably be one of those films if it was shown to kids that would be where the sprockets would be all torn because a teacher would show the film backwards through the projector I've mentioned this before that you know watch a film and generally there's there's damage at the beginning and the end of the film because people don't know how to thread a projector or they have problems rewinding but sometimes I'll watch a film and then in the middle of it it seemed like there's a lot of sprocket damage and a lot of jitteriness and I'm like huh I wonder what happened and it's because somebody you watch the scene you realize wow somebody ran the film backwards to see like somebody jumping out of a swimming pool up onto a diving board or you know somebody kind of doing the obverse of eating a banana etc which is just hilarious but is if you're not good at it you can completely shred a film so much so that some films actually have written on the can do not run in Reverse is such a wonderful temptation to do that so that was office thrill-seekers and I asked folks I think I'm Facebook if they could recognize the voice of the narrator that is Charles old father who is he's in other Centron films and he's also a narrator for one of the most popular Centron films shake hands with danger and he plays voice it has a little bit more of a twang to it and he actually sings in shake hands with danger and that's a film for working on caterpillar heavy equipment it's a safety film brilliant film might like this film it's intentionally funny and slapstick and although there's a little bit of gore in that film but it's it's awesome I've shown it so many times I'll probably not show it tonight unless you absolutely want to see it and if you absolutely want to see it please make those comments and we'll show it like at the end absolutely anyways I'm hoping and I I'm not sure if I've seen this film not I'm hoping that this next film is something that will compete with shake and of the danger as far as showing people falling down stairs and messing up in general my notes were not so good there's a mysterious film I've been looking for which shows mailman falling down a flight of stairs among other things on I'm hoping that is this film this is don't take chances so enjoy [Music] [Music] from 60 feet up a wrench like this can be as lethal as a bullet from a gun the man was lucky he's wearing a hard hat it saved him from serious injury others aren't is like I have hundreds of things that a person named killed people not by themselves mind you someone had to be thoughtless they're not pretty well I keep them around because they make people stop and think this is human blood have you ever operated a circular saw maybe daydreamed a little while doing the saw cut this piece flung it back at the operator penetrated his skull up to here death was instantaneous para jeans harmless enough until a caught fire the boy was 17 he worked in a gas station can you imagine what he felt as the skin on his legs started to burn up can you imagine the pain have you any to have an accident [Music] it happens very quickly and then it's too late the only thing that's real anymore is the terrible pain you're on your own now no one else can help you bear it your ribs have been splintered and you're bleeding inside me your chest has been crushed and you will never be quite the same again as you were just a few moments ago no one can put the clock back you've been hurt it's happened well that's only the beginning what really matters comes afterwards the time you spend in hospital while they try to put your body together again that's still not the end imagine spending the rest of your life without your eyes or your arms without being able to walk again as you sit and watch this film some people somewhere are trying to carry on living the life they led before their accident some of them may never be able to Dutch is 28 he had a promising future as a hockey player played junior a and had been signed to a contract by the Boston Bruins organization he never played for them he had an accident what happened to you Dutch well this is what happened to me Bill's right arm was crushed in a press well it had to be amputated twice first below and then above the elbow and in the amps were there we're all in together so that arms off legs off and you try having exercises to get your stump back in the shape again lifting weights so many weight today so many weights this and that doing things then they send you this unable to get a fitting through you're on and I got a fitting for me I worked all right and they take it back to the mall again and make you pick up blocks and make your right with your hook and dial telephones and tie your own tie and your shoes than that do things like that to get you working so you'd be able do the job that you are doing before if they can and did you go back to your old job well I did for a while they took me on but I don't I wasn't doing the same let me maybe tweak the floors he takes off a minute you know Bill has a wife and family to support it's not as easy to earn a living now as it was before mrs. Abbott is a new Canadian she had planned a new life in this country and things seemed good for the future then her husband was killed at work he left her with a heavy mortgage on their new home and two teenage daughters to support by herself anything else but work is just as a question for me family that's something else that moves very much I just don't care for me but pleases me right now is enormous but ships clearly quite a friendly terrible thing we just left let me just the world it isn't worth it accidents needn't happen these lives don't have to be wasted accidents can be prevented fred bunt today because he was wearing these safety boots they saved him and the men who wore these would be blind today if the goggles and glasses hadn't done their job protecting eyes they can still see so they're still working and in the plank where you work this equipment is provided it's designed to save you from injury and it does there are complete suits of clothing to guard against special hazards well for more routine work in the plant heavy duty safety gloves will protect hands from cuts and burns and hard hats have saved hundreds of men from serious injury while you work channel experts and committees constantly check on the safety of your plant piles are separated from work areas by painted lines these have been worn away they must be repainted immediately and once mark the Isles must be kept clear nothing can be permitted to project into them which would block traffic or cause someone to trip up it's every operators responsibility to make sure the equipment he works with is not a hazard to other people the guards on the machines are put there to protect you for moving parts Warren are not functioning correctly inform your supervisor so that they may be corrected at once every safety precaution is checked and rigidly enforced to keep the shop safe everything which management can do here to prevent accidents is done and every man knows the procedure to follow to operate his machine correctly every man understands how to work safely and yet accidents still happen why why when a man has been doing the job safely for 15 years why when he knows perfectly well what will happen why do they happen I believe that the person who had last used the machine before I came to it had tripped the two levers which operated it and then turned the power off before the machine and completed its full cycle then when I came along to operate the machine as soon as the power was activated the machine cut without me having to use any of the control so it was his fault not directly his fault but he just didn't think what he was doing because I figure I wasn't just thinking at a time at a job I have myself and he thought I wasn't thinking I was thinking more of the job being right didn't thinking of myself the flats you work in can be dangerous places the machines are bigger stronger and more powerful than you are that's why they're there you can that's the only advantage you have over the only way you can stop them hurting you is for you to think you've got to think about the rules of safe operation for every machine got to think about what you you've got to think to think to think [Music] the moment you stop thinking you're vulnerable [Music] [Music] you have to think safety all the time on and off the chopper you can't afford to relax for a moment because that's all it takes to throw away the rest of your life nobody wants accidents to happen no one wants to get hurt and yet someone somewhere will have an accident today tomorrow and the next day and it could be you how sure are you that it will never happen to you how much would you be willing to bet but you will never have an accident ever perhaps tomorrow today don't take chances for yourself or the other phone [Music] [Music] you oh yeah that was Canadian all right that was not the film I was looking for I now realize the film I need to be looking for is got my hair is nuts okay so the the film I do need to be looking for is called risk takers and so I was in the back and the archive trying to find it and I'm still looking for it so you will try to unearth that and I'll show it to you it's a wonderful film this one was pretty great as well and it shows you you know not just Americans people the United States made educational films um can't Canadians did every country made them because people need educating in all these countries and work safety is not just an American thing but yeah I like workplace safety films because they're they're wonderful cautionary tales of what goes wrong when you don't pay attention and so yeah let me see if I can what we got coming up this one is a preventative film The Sound of sound and this is about sound in the workplace and I have not seen it so I'm anxious to actually watch it so let's thread it up as a reminder on the to the right of the screen there's AV geeks comm that's a place that you can go and you can see other sound meow actually without sound oh you wouldn't really know what was going on what does sound mean to you [Music] sound is a way of seeing with your ears [Music] we're surrounded by sound and we never really think about it the sounds of life everything what it would be like if they weren't there what is sound what is sound noise noise the ears ringing and if a few seconds of noise can do this think what eight hours a day of it will do or five days a week [Applause] or 12 months a year and when it causes you pain you've got to figure [Music] or stop it or if neither as possible you find a way to protect your ears against it if you don't you're going to have a problem but sound doesn't have to be painful to damage your ears [Music] it just has to be loud [Music] anytime or anyplace it becomes difficult to talk when you have to speak louder than normal or when you have to shout to be heard years are taking a beating loud noises a loud sound would bother me therefore the damn thing a scary working on light gauge steel how many ahead I get a ringing sensation sometimes they get a buzzing my wife tried to talk to me raise your voice up because I came here for an hour go ahead I'll tell you when I get home get away fuel wanna annoy television [Music] and it takes maybe three hours but I mean you still have time [Music] I mean it it really gets to you just like a study humming there's study buzz so the noise and just really gets to you but when you ask some people if noise bothers them they'll tell you [Music] and when you ask them why they'll say constant to it they're going deaf asked their families he drives up the driveway if you could hear the radio when he drives up the driveway in the car these this is when the windows are closed I know he's coming and my boy has a pretty you know a pretty strong voice and he'll say dad how about that baseball game you know the zones so pitched wasn't that terrific or something and my husband doesn't even know that he even said it sometimes what a few times he'd be sitting in the yard neighbors will walk through and say hi to him and he wouldn't answer they'd say to me you know I didn't want to speak and I'd say no just excuse him he doesn't hear you a hearing loss caused by this kind of sound is a little like getting a sunburn a matter of exposure imagine it's your first day at the beach and the Sun feels great not too hard because there's a good breeze so you stay out all day without a shirt what happens you get burned and you never felt it coming a sound friend takes a lot longer possibly years but it creeps up on you the same way there's just one difference a sunburn will heal up hearing damage one let's see what it looks like from inside the year there are three major sections in the year the outer middle and inner it's in the inner ear that the most important part of our hearing mechanism is located as sound comes in these little hairlike nerve cells begin to vibrate and when you bombard them 8 hours a day with noise they get tired and it takes a while for them to bounce back they're a little like grass you step on it and it bounces back but the more you step on it and beat it down the longer it takes to come back until one day it doesn't and when those little nerve cells in your inner ear lie down you've got hearing problems what a few times now we have a Parkway around where I live [Music] here I can hear the high-pitched noise such as ringing of the phone he's down till you miss now you know you're hurting before but really to get the sound from these things now you have to see it take the sound out of sound it's like taking the color out of sight [Music] well I noticed on some conversations that where the people are talking real quiet I noticed that I don't catch on right or until unless I'm real close to them in general conversation with some individuals I think they're talking to something may be true to maybe but I do find myself asking them to repeat themselves I hear them but it's muffled not quite clear well the day the only thing I miss is TVs if I turn it up real loud now nobody else could stay in the same room well everyday of the time or my wife don't look right at me when our thinking the telephone I would trouble one at all mere people in the living room sitting amongst them conversation properly very would you say mom I can't hear so [Music] nobody's talking but what is he saying [Music] questions are asked but not understood your friends try for a while then they quit trying put your way from leaves out by yourself the wards like you're in television and stuff like that or in conversation I'm out I feel I feel like I'm out as well I'm in space by myself people allow me but life in I don't hear him and when it gets worse I didn't will if you keep exposing your ears to a noise beating the good sounds of life will go so what do you do to protect your hearing they come out recently what is not gonna bring back by hearing but what here and I do have I think they're one of I think before they voted the god rubbing in my head I'll make the call here your blower they have a new yard but then they came around and we start wearing them I go home now now humming you're not there anymore I find using them when as much as I possibly can it helps to eliminate some of that problem in the end of the day most of my men half the world it's a compulsory thing they've lost most of their hearing it's the greatest thing that ever happened for especially people pneumatic hammer one time in here we used to have cotton balls you know put them inside a lawyer so I found out that they were dangerous by my doctor I'm not sure glad he's there must come out to start right away with but Dyson he probably would never get in what a number of years with well there's two things that I [Music] I'm noisy industry like we got here it'll protect postal but how are you going to hear people talk if you have hearing protection on you're a person speak with machine noise and voices sound like this back on rig it is post-apocalypse protection on the job on the field it's a big part of our [Music] [Music] hearing protection part of an ongoing effort to improve your working conditions and to protect you think about what you hear or don't hear the sound of sound what is it worth to you think about it think about saving it [Music] Wow [Music] sorry I was trying to see if there was a copyright notice on here Wow that home was very very purple and I don't know if you recognize that voice I don't know that voice of that person the name of the person but that is he did a lot of voiceover work for Japanese movies kung-fu movies but I do not know his name hmm I know that voice always have an uncanny thing about voiceovers and people who do voices voice-over work for animation and usually figure out who it is so that one I've heard recently and the Japanese monster movie or something all right so I found risk-takers I know we're after the 10 o'clock hour but I wanted to show it to you thanks everybody for coming out I'm skip AV geek and thanks for indulging me watching a bunch of films about work and work safety and trying to find a job and potentials for job there's lots of material here I could do many many shows about this and I have so maybe we'll do this again so the next show that we're gonna do a streaming event is going to be October 29th so I haven't decided what I'm gonna show yet I mean that's right around Halloween so maybe something related to Halloween but maybe that's dumb maybe we'll do writing notes in my database but it's it's really at this point it's about things that I want to show people and why I want to show them so I'm looking up mailmen in the database and that didn't bring up this film but what's the workers so we're gonna watch one last film and then we can go back and watch footage of hurricane robot I could have done a hurricane share tonight but what is all right enjoy risk-takers there are almost two million on-the-job injuries and deaths each year most of them are caused by unnecessary risk-taking this is the story of one of them you gotta wear this suit to work after the wedding Eddie give the guys at the warehouse a real laugh in the week before young Eddie Jones wedding Jill Greenlee helped him with his tux speaking of something to wear look what the guys and I made for you give him a custom-made hard hat from his well-wishing friends arranged for the bachelor party practiced is toast for the wedding reception like to propose a toast to the bride and groom and put in his pre-wedding Friday afternoon working with Eddie just as he usually did hey Eddie take a look great so stop driving this thing and get him fixed before you hurt yourself look I'm not the only one who drives this thing and if the guy before me didn't red tagged it why should i any other brakes aren't that bad now come on and load this thing so we can get out of here for your party tonight great hardhat as reported later he didn't think the brakes were really dangerous besides he figured if someone else could handle that forklift so could he with that tragic decision Gill Greenlee joined the risk takers [Music] in the world we live in a lot of people take risks some are taken for excitement challenged or fun are taken for fame or fortune and some are an inevitable part of certain jobs in the 20th century but today we're talking about a whole other category of risk takers whose injuries and deaths have nothing to do with money or fun and they certainly aren't an inevitable part of their jobs in the 20th century we're talking about people who put their feet and hands and peer into risk who use chairs instead of proper stools or ladders who fail to wear hard hats or safety glasses or lock out their power sources who run on the job remove safety devices ignore safety warnings take drugs endanger their backs by lifting improperly or who endanger their lives by failing to use their safety belts people like postal driver Jerry DeVries who decided one day that wearing his safety belt was inconvenient yeah I have a delivery route in a real quiet residential area and even though it's a strict rule of the Postal Service that we have to keep our safety belts on all the time when the vehicle is moving I sometimes take mine off because it's a lot of trouble to wear when I have to keep getting in and out of the Jeep anyhow that one day I was delivering the mail like always with a cocking roaring out of nowhere and that's the last thing I remember [Applause] [Music] really embarrassing thing is the police said I probably would have been alright if I had been wearing my safety belt and had my door closed in the intersection an unnecessary risk taken for an unimportant reason and the unfortunate thing is that most people who take risks of get hurt really know better like the construction worker who poured gasoline into a hot engine or the machinist who removed his safety glasses because he said they were uncomfortable or the gas line worker who thought he could get away with working in an uninsured trench because as he told his friends I'm only gonna be in there a few minutes but still millions of people are killed and injured because they gamble with unnecessary risks as safety specialists know so well unfortunately everybody takes risk sometimes but nobody takes risks all the time and some people are just more reliable to take risks at certain times of the day than others risk taking really increases if you're tired angry hungry or maybe you're just in a hurry and it really increases if you've been taking drugs or if you've been drinking because then well then your judgments been badly affected if you could scan the brains of Representative risk takers to discover why they take risks you'd find reasons like these very much alive inside their minds taking risk and save time taking risk and make the job easier I'm not afraid to take risk I won't get hurt or most often of all I can get away with it fact is that most people just don't believe that anything bad will happen to them the construction worker who poured gasoline into the hot engine knew it wouldn't explode the Machinists too endangered his eyes didn't think he'd get hit the flying ships the gas line worker alone in the unshorn trench no it wouldn't collapse and the postal driver was sure he could drive his Jeep safely without his seatbelt in fact almost everyone injured from risk-taking was sure they could get away with it one time nobody takes an intentional risk expecting to get hurt and they're not only convinced they'll get away with it a lot of them actually think they'll get some kind of reward out of it as the postal driver said I thought it would be more convenient the way I did it as the injured machinist said I thought I'd be more comfortable without my glasses that's all as the Byrne construction worker said I figured it would be faster the way I did it and as Gil Greenlee the forklift driver was reported to have said I didn't have time to get the brakes fixed anyhow it was faster and less work just to keep going faster less work easier more comfortable but the problem is that the assumed rewards are so vastly outweighed by the possible consequences of the risk no thinking person would trade a fractured skull for the comfort of going without a hard hat or a fractured hip for the convenience of using an office chair as a ladder or possible death because it was fun to ignore the rules for safety around heavy equipment because as those familiar with Gil Greenlees case were reminded so tragically the consequences of risks always exceed their imagined rewards but because not every risk has a bad outcome the risk takers are encouraged to take new risks simply because they got away with the last one the whole thing becomes a game of risk roulette where the winners never win anything important and the losers too often lose their lives in risk roulette if you land on a green space you got away with it at that time if you land on a yellow it's a minor injury if you land on the red a major injury if you land on this space of fatality and because it's a brand-new spin of the wheel every time a risk is taken the odds of a bad outcome increase the more you play and while there are more green spaces than the others and while some may get away with their gamble for several spins you just never know where the ball will fall do you and the rule is a risk roulette apply equally to those who take their risks unknowingly simply because they're careless or daydreaming or maybe they might just not recognize their unsafe acts as risks at all it just doesn't occur to some people that unbalancing a file cabinet is dangerous or running through slippery areas or jumping off a loading dock or using tools improperly whether on the job or at home we're literally hundreds of hazards lying in wait to sabotage the risk takers who fail to recognize the danger and the results can range from saw cuts to slips and falls and serious injury part of the problem is that people who do a job many times tend to get overconfident kills and to forget the risks their job involves the lineman who works with high voltage may not get overconfident as soon as the worker who pounds nails but even when you're working with 21 thousand volts familiarity can breed carelessness and because the outcome of risk roulette is so often tragic it's a vital for people to consider the consequences before they play and in that tiny second before they decide to endanger their feats and the years use chairs as ladders work without hard hats or safety glasses run on the job ignore safety warnings lift improperly drive without safety belts drive a forklift with faulty brakes or whatever they should consider the possibility of an accident an injury by asking themselves to suppose suppose I fall suppose I injure my head suppose I blind my eye suppose I tripped suppose I crush my hand suppose I injure my back suppose I crash with another car [Music] [Music] then they should balance those serious consequences against such unimportant rewards as a few seconds safe versus injury or death finally at work or at home they should remember they're about to gamble on the deadly game of risk roulette now and to consider that the ball could drop in the green the yellow the red or in the skull is very time which brings us back to Gil Greenlee the forklift driver hey come on Eddie snap it up you'll make us late to your own bachelor party hey take it easy Gil we'll get there all right Gil knew his brakes were defective that day in fact the investigation showed that he commented on it to several of his fellow workers but he kept on driving his forklift anyhow in part because he had a reputation as a pretty macho guy who had to get the job done alright move it up buddy and a show-off for his friends like young Eddie Jones [Music] so there you had a man who knew he was taking a risk but for reasons of his own he kept right on taking it but at 3:15 on the afternoon of Friday December the 11th Gil Greenlees game of risk roulette came to a deadly end [Music] that was close you guys see that I'd have gone off the dock if I hadn't hit those boxes hey nice job here Greenlee yeah how about yeah you okay yeah I'm fine but I'm not sure about the box yeah I think that was it end of the game but ironically not forgive Greenlee because you see and sometimes happens that the victim of a risk-taker is an innocent bystander in this case a good friend who just happened to be in the wrong place the wrong time case history of a risk-taker whose rewards hardly equal the consequences of his unsafe act [Music] Eddie um such a great film I'm happy I found it we appreciated the really crazy stunts with postal workers falling down stairs flipping around in a little postal truck and like looked like the girl went through a window almost a windshield so that very the first like 10 seconds there's a lineman blowing up on a on a telephone pole from guests getting
