america foreign and hello i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show oops turn on my special neon sign meaning we're open for business today watching some old 16 millimeter films and uh learning some french picking up some french uh that was la letra de tom and um thanks ann uh let's see we got a lot of films lined up and we got one on the telecity which is behind me um we're going to learn some more stuff and this one involves beginning motorcycle skills enjoy like so you have to know where every control is located and be able to operate each control without looking in an emergency you don't have enough time to find the control and operate it your reactions have to become automatic that's what this unit is all about you'll learn to locate and operate all of the important controls locate and learn the function of all important motorcycle parts and perform a pre-ride inspection to make sure everything's in safe operating condition you've got to be able to do these things before you even start the engine motorcycles are not like automobiles the location of the steering wheel accelerator brake and clutch are the same for all cars but motorcycles are not standardized different brands of motorcycles may have some controls in different locations also motorcycles have some controls which aren't on many modern cars we'll be talking about this motorcycle throughout the film but you can check the owner's manual if your motorcycle is different the main controls are located in two places and operated controls are on the handlebars controls operated by the feet are located on the left and on the right side of the motorcycle just below the engine the ignition switch on most motorcycles is located in front of the handlebar or just under the fuel tank a key operates the ignition switch all ignition switches have an off position switch on when you're going to start your motorcycle some motorcycles also have a third position which turns on the headlight and tail light others have the headlight tail light control on the handlebar check your owner's manual for the exact location the headlight dimmer switch is also on the handlebar marked h for high beam and l for low beam on most motorcycles an indicator lights up when the high beam is on off for low beam leaving the headlight on even during the day is extremely important it makes you much more visible to other drivers the turn signal switch is also located on the handlebar push the signal to the left for left turns or to the right to signal a right turn the indicator light shows you the signal is flashing unlike cars this switch on a motorcycle doesn't shut off automatically don't forget to turn the signal off yourself leaving signals on after you've turned confuses drivers near you your horn warns others that you're there the fastest way to stop the engine in an emergency is to hit the kill switch when you operate the kill switch the engine stops instantly every motorcycle has the throttle on the right handlebar it does the same thing as the gas pedal and a car turn the throttle toward you to increase engine speed away from you to slow the engine down toward you to increase speed a way to slow down when you let go it returns to idle by itself the front brake lever is located on the right handle bar on most motorcycles you won't be using it until you've mastered basic riding and stopping skills the choke is located on the left handle bar or under the seat using it helps start a cold engine but turn it off after the engine started the clutch lever is located on the left handlebar on most motorcycles squeeze the clutch lever to operate it this disengages the rear wheel from the engine when the motorcycle's in gear releasing the clutch sends power through the transmission to the back wheel and you go the gear shift lever is located here on the left for most motorcycles you change gears with your toe releasing the lever each time between gears lift up for a higher gear press down for a lower gear when the motorcycle is shifted to neutral a green light indicates this on the instrument cluster some motorcycles have different shifting patterns so check your rider's handbook on most motorcycles the rear wheel brake lever is on the right side [Music] press to brake let up to release the brake most motorcycles have kick starters a good hard push gets the engine going many larger motorcycles have electric starters to make starting easier this small lever the fuel control valve is very important you set it to the off position when parked to the on position when you're going to start up when you're low on fuel the reserve position gives you enough to make it to a gas station your speedometer tells you how fast you're going when you're driving plants quickly down at the speedometer then eyes back to the road if your motorcycle has a tachometer it'll show the engine's revolutions per minute don't let the tachometer needle stay in the red area this will cause engine damage [Music] now a quick review this rider is writing correctly he's got his eyes where on the handlebars on the road ahead or on the front wheel his eyes are on the road ahead he's too busy to look at the handlebars front wheel or anywhere else when the rider shifted gears he operated the clutch shift lever and throttle did he use touch alone touching sight or just sight you use touch alone watching the road ahead you won't have time to stare at your motorcycle's controls control levers are located on the handlebars on the left and right side of the engine or all three locations control levers are on all three locations the handlebars the right side and the left side quickly now name these controls rear wheel brake lever throttle choke gearshift lever ignition switch kickstarter dimmer switch this completes part one of unit two [Music] you know unfortunately i don't have the whole series i have onesies and twosies uh in on this um but uh you know i'm trying to imagine where they would have shown this maybe uh someplace that gave lessons on how to ride motorcycles or if there was um licensing for a state dmv like maybe you were required to watch this before you got your you did your skills test and you took your your test and got your license i'm not sure but kawasaki they were invested in this um so there you go um let's try to figure out what's wrong with sarah what's her problem dc sarah wait outside i'll be dickie when i can chris where would you be looking at the absence list i see that you were out of school all last week and that you have missed mr abram's class three times this week besides that you've been tardy numerous times to his class you understand sarah that even if you're absent from only one class with no excuse you're truant and the consequences of truancy can be suspension unless you can give me a good reason as to why you shouldn't be suspended exactly what's going to happen well um i'm not doing well in mr abrams class well that's no reason not to go with it it seems to me if you're not doing well you'd make sure you got there do you mean that you're going to suspend me for missing mr abram's class unless you can give me some logical reason for being out of his class yes i am mrs wenzel i've tried to do well in this class it just happens to be the worst subject that i take and i i've asked him to help me but he uh doesn't seem to care he's just written me off as a problem the first week i was there he just sort of wrote me off if i'm a little late he sends me to the office and that's the way he deals with me i'm just a problem you could care less well are you a problem well i i mean would you care about a problem that's the only way you relate to me is if i'm a problem sarah it seems to me that if you are not doing well in class that the thing to do is to attend class and prepare yourself and you're not doing that that seems like very childish behavior no i'm not being childish i've tried i i'm just lost interest in the class i don't know what to do he doesn't seem to care or whether it treats me like a dumbbell sarah i hear that sort of excuse all day long it's not good enough well what am i supposed to do what am i supposed to do accept your own responsibility i don't believe you're doing accepting my responsibility i don't believe that sarah i'm going to suspend you take this into the outer office fill it out take it home and have your parents sign it mrs winslow i'll call your parents and arrange a conference with them here take it that's it huh that's it [Applause] oh hello hi mrs martin mr martin hi can i talk to you for a few minutes sure sit down [Applause] i just got suspended from school and uh mrs winslow said she's going to call my parents when they get home i tried to talk her out of it you know but she's got her mind made up and i thought maybe if if you could talk to her well i i don't think there's anything i could do to persuade her to change her mind if things like that's been done it's already done i i don't know i just had the feeling that maybe you were the one you know that could talk to her well sit down a minute and tell me what's happened i've been missing mr abram's class you know quite quite a bit too too much and um the rules are that you're truant and then you get suspended well i i didn't realize that and i my parents are going to be involved and i they think i've been going to school and i don't want them to find out any different you know you've missed this class a lot too i've had five absences in the last two weeks oh um you want to tell me where you've been going and what you've been doing i i haven't told anybody but uh i i've i've sort of been sick what kind of sick sarah well i had an abortion and um i'm you know i hadn't missed some school does anybody know about it no nobody knows about it i mean i can't tell my parents that i mean you know that's like you've been to a doctor yeah um you know everything is okay well what does that have to do with missing all these classes aside from not feeling well yes well um mr abrams classes now the guy that's the guys to go with that got me pregnant you know he's he's in the class and um i hate the class i just thought i understand sarah i'm just trying to think what i could possibly do to help you you know you could tell her that i'll go to that class you will go i'll go to that class you think your parents will ever find out do you understand this would this would destroy them all right maybe i can do something um i'll try i'll go i'll go down and talk to her i i don't know what good it will do i don't know if it'll do any good at all it may even make things worse i have no idea but i'll try if you want me to thanks a lot you're welcome i'll talk to you later okay miss winslow i think we're really talking about something that's after the fact and i think that one of the biggest problems now is that when her parents find out about this there's going to be even more trouble at home well if it is a problem that's very crucial and traumatic in the girl's life i think her parents should be made aware of it i mean the school simply cannot assume that sort of responsibility well i appreciate the school's position and i appreciate your position but i think this one time you're going too much by the book we let sarah get away with this would be setting a very dangerous precedent we can't assume responsibility for the child's actions but the crisis was solved it's not a serious matter any longer i think i'm in the best position to judge that well the problem was all solved last friday and i can assure you that she's promised me and i trust her and she will go to class regularly from now on unless you can give me some good reasons for all that's happening the suspension stands my position well then i'm asking you to trust me it's not a matter of trust i think you realize that well i think it's a matter of trusting my judgment it isn't at all i'm sure that you have very good rapport with many of your students unfortunately you don't always see them in the same capacity that we see lot of national days national daughter day national sunday national silent movie day national coffee day etc etc all right my one of my favorite focus uh frames is by uh cahill films um it's beautiful look at that like the arrows and the kind of the um all the the texture there with the itself anyways here's uh management and food techniques or techniques in in of food management food measurement holy cow yeah i better drink that coffee now techniques of food measurement enjoy time and produce better products by using a tray a person may assemble the ingredients and utensils together at one time and keep the working space in order it is recommended to select the proper size sifter that is suitable to sift flour and other dry ingredients the standard set of metal measuring cups includes a one cup one half cup one third cup and one fourth cup these cups are used to measure dry ingredients or shortening so each may be measured leveled with the top of the cup before measuring white flour place wax paper on the counter sift enough flour before measuring so it will be easy to spoon the correct amount into the measuring cup sift close to the flat surface in a circular motion to keep the flower from packing carefully place flour into the cup with a spoon until the cup is full the straight edge spatula is used to level off ingredients in measuring cups or measuring spoons a knife may be used if it has a straight edge this table knife is not suitable to obtain level measurement always level the cup of flour with a metal spatula or the straight edge of a knife so the measured flour is level with the top of the cup pick up the wax paper and hold it in a funnel-like position pour remaining flour in container to measure confectioners or powdered sugar use a scoop to lift the sugar carefully into the cup until it is more than full level off the cup with a metal spatula if the confectioners or powdered sugar you are using is lumpy place the sugar in a sifter and sift using a circular motion to prevent the sugar from packing place the sifted sugar carefully into the correct size measuring cup and level using a straight edge place granulated sugar in a dry measuring cup level off the cup of sugar with a metal spatula your excess sugar will fall on the wax paper resting on the counter if granulated sugar is lumpy the sugar should be sifted first the sieve or strainer may be used to separate liquid from solid food or to remove lumps from dry ingredients if brown sugar is lumpy press the brown sugar through a coarse sieve with the back of a spoon before measuring brown sugar unlike other dry ingredients must be packed firmly with the back of a spoon to hold the shape of the cup when it is turned out there are different sizes of rubber scrapers which are used to remove shortening or liquid ingredients from either a measuring cup or other containers solid shortening is easy to measure when at room temperature to measure in a metal cup pack the shortening so that all air spaces are pressed out again level the sharpening with a straight edge to ensure accurate measurement the rubber scraper helps to remove all the shortening from the bottom and sides of the measuring cup which may be difficult to get out the pyrex measuring cup used for one cup or less than a cup of liquid has a rim above the one cup mark to help prevent spilling and a lip for easy pouring this pyrex measuring cup may be used for measuring up to two cups of liquid and has a rim above the two cup mark to prevent spilling the lip which extends beyond the rim of the cup makes pouring a little more easy to measure a liquid place the pyrex measuring cup on a flat surface and pour the liquid to the desired measurement line always be sure that your measurement is at eye level to measure thick liquids oil the pyrex measuring cup lightly before pouring in the ingredients when pouring thick liquids stop pouring just before the desired level is reached as thick liquids tend to pile up if necessary use a rubber scraper to remove all the liquid from the cup the basic measuring spoons come in a set of four spoons the rounded bowl set of one tablespoon one teaspoon one half teaspoon and one-fourth teaspoon are used to measure less than one-fourth cup ingredients to measure a tablespoon of a thin liquid dip the measuring spoon in the cup of liquid and lift the filled spoon out be sure that the measuring spoon is completely full and give the spoon an extra shake to remove the liquid which may remain in the spoon when measuring flavoring or any ingredient being poured from a bottle or from the opposite side of the label so you do not spill the liquid and mess the label hold the measuring spoon to one side of the mixing bowl as you pour into the spoon this will year to measure one half cup of shortening by the water displacement or cold water method first measure one half cup of cold water put shortening in the cup a little at a time until the water reaches even with the one cup mark when the shortening is pushed under the water drain off all the water and then one half cup of shortening will remain in the cup when measuring dry ingredients with measuring spoons use a paper towel wax paper or a plate to receive the excess ingredients which may spill out of the measuring spoon or container to measure spices stir before measuring to remove any lumps that may have formed place the measuring spoon into the ingredient level the spice with the edge of the can or a straight edge if a can has been sealed with paper and cut evenly the paper will act as a straight edge to measure less than 1 4 teaspoon of a dry ingredient fill the measuring spoon full level and divide through the center of the spoon with a knife and to push out half of the ingredient from the spoon this will leave 1 8 teaspoon less than 1 8 teaspoon is known as a few grains a dash or a pinch to measure less than 1 4 cup of shortening or brown sugar use the measuring spoons place your finger under the ball of the spoon as you dip the spoon into the ingredient to prevent the measuring spoon from bending or the handle breaking pack firmly and level your ingredients there are 16 tablespoons in one cup notice the fifteen tablespoons of leveled flour by pouring the flour into a metal measuring cup and adding one more level tablespoon flour we will have the equivalent of one level cup of flour this method can be used to measure either liquid or dry ingredients when a measuring cup is not available to measure one half of an egg break the whole egg into a small bowl or cup and beat with a fork or beater until it is a uniform yellow color dip the measuring spoon to the bottom of the cup so that you will have a tablespoon of egg rather than the foam there are approximately four tablespoons in one large beaten egg the accuracy of level measurement with which you measure the ingredients in a recipe is the most important item one can do for successful cooking and the preparation of foods [Music] everything you wanted to know about food measurement um yes this is a homeek film and i apologize for the audio fritzing out something either the black magic box that i'm using like right right here or obs software something's misbehaving and so i just had to switch it and make it not so weird all right so um let's learn about the land of the free thanks to a car manufacturer [Music] what makes a country what makes this country of ours let's take a swift bird's eye view to see if we can discover the ingredients the first essential is space to live in and we americans have plenty of that this republic stretches from ocean to ocean and from the great lakes to the gulf within our borders our vast fertile plains where graze the cattle and the sheep we have great fields of billowing grain mile on mile nodding golden heads to the sun a giant granary friendly smiling valleys are dotted with fragrant fruit trees and streaked with dusty green vineyards that march in columns over the rolling hills we have millions of acres of timberland oak and elm and hickory maple and walnuts spruce and pine our mighty rivers toss their plumes of spray as they hurry down to the sea majestic mountains proudly lift their ancient snow-covered heads to the blue sky plenty of space to live in but land is not enough to make a country there must also be people to work the land men to swing the eggs and fell the timber to begin the conversion of a tree into a useful piece of lumber there must be people to harvest the crops cotton and wheat corn and tobacco oats and alfalfa barley and beans now people act pretty much alike the world over no matter where you go they eat and drink and discuss the news of the day they're born they work for their share of happiness and they die they feel the same heat of summer and the same chill of winter and after work they play but that isn't enough and that's why for 300 years they've been coming to this country our fathers or our father's fathers months or years or generations ago made the long voyage to these shores in search of freedom for more than half a century the statue of liberty's soaring symbol of america has held high aloft a torch brightly burning to light the way for 26 million new americans to this new land of opportunity to this land of the free and what treasures are ours we produce 34 of all the coal mined in the world from our wells gush has 62 percent of the world's supply of oil from seemingly inexhaustible veins in the earth we produce 29 of the world's iron ore other rich loads supply us with 32 percent of the world's copper in the fields of the south we grow half of all the cotton produced our most valuable crop is corn of which we grow more than half of the world's supply to get about our great country we operate 34 percent of the world's railroads a quarter of a million miles of track for personal transportation we drive 70 percent of all the automobiles that roll along the world's highways we enjoy the convenience of half of all the telephones in service for diversion and instruction we listen to 45 of all the radio sets in existence we import into this country for our use half of all the rubber produced in other lands from across the sea we bring into america more than half of all the coffee grown and from the other side of the world we get more than half of the world's production of raw silk and what proportion of the population of the earth shares all these riches there are 130 million of us americans but how do we compare in numbers with the rest of mankind well such is the ingenuity the courage and the capacity for hard work of the american people that they have developed these infinite resources and still have a lot of room to grow in for we constitute only six percent of the population of the world only six percent and yet we are the wealthiest in resources as well as the happiest and freeest people on earth we constitute the greatest country in the world great in resources and in the vision of our people great an accomplishment in the past and equally great in promise for the future not so long ago our forefathers braved unknown perils of an unknown land and crossed the continent to win the west a triumph of courage and will to achieve the country over stout-hearted men and women were making homes and raising families one gal a day the last spike was driven that laced the two oceans together with a transcontinental railway now the two coasts were only days apart instead of months in 1840 a hundred years ago a member of the united states senate made an amazing speech i urge the closing of the united states patent office it is obvious i think that you will concur that we have exhausted our inventedness and because there is nothing further to be devised and patented no machine or contraption that can possibly add to our virtue and well-being i crave your support of a measure to close the patent office close the patent office and since that day have come inventions that have meant jobs for millions of men and women the electric light the telephone the phonograph the automobile the airplane the radio and the sound motion picture each year four hundred thousand applications for patents are filed from which come as many as forty thousand workable ideas for high no further back than the turn of the century less than four decades ago letters were hand written by the light of an oil lamp now your secretary turns out her work swiftly and legibly on the typewriter not so long ago metal was shaped by the smith and the mighty man was he because he had to be nowadays a man touches a lever and the jaws of a giant press close on a sheet of steel to form the top of an automobile not so long ago milk was skimmed by hand but now the separator efficiently divorces the milk from the cream ploughing used to be a slow job and a hard job not too long ago but now american inventiveness has lightened the labors of the farmer with the tractor and the gang plow nature created niagara falls truly a beautiful spectacle but even more magnificent is the largest man-made structure on earth boulder dam eloquent testimony to the vision of our country for this tremendous work will make the desert to blossom like the rose creating garden spots where once was trackless waste we have flung great bridges across bays and streams that people may move more easily from one place to another for the exchange of goods and ideas over and under rivers between the united states and the dominion of canada are bridges and tunnels that cross the boundary line between our good neighbor and ourselves a 3 000 mile frontier of friendship over which not a gun has been pointed in enmity in more than a hundred years typically american are our majestic cities with their towering skyscrapers of steel and stone and glass truly an awe-inspiring site is manhattan island in busy bustling chicago millions have been spent to beautify the lakefront until it is now one of the show places of america the gift of a generous city to its people the national capital at washington breathe there a man with souls so dead who never to himself has said this is my own my native land this country has been called the melting pot because by some strange alchemy a variety of ingredients goes into it and the result of the bubbling and seething is always the same a fresh creation a new citizen an american [Music] until the skies are clear [Music] life is wonderful side by side and what makes an american well there's education free schools for all the people only 150 000 of our youngsters were enrolled in institutions of higher learning fifty years ago now the enrollment is one million two hundred thousand then there's a free press for the uninterrupted exchange of ideas a press that is free to speak its mind about those in power to safeguard the rights of the lowly to examine acts and motives of people in high places to ensure justice for all under the constitution there is free speech for we are an aggressive tough-minded people who never hesitate to speak our minds still the fact remains that we homeowners have our rights too and i for one am gonna stick up for mine [Applause] from its beginning more than 300 years ago america has been the haven of the oppressed who found religious freedom here dotting the landscape in city town and country are church spires reaching up into the heavens great edifices invite worshipers to sit beneath their hushed and holy domes here in america every man may worship his god according to his lights may address the almighty if he so pleases in the tongue of his fathers for this is the land of the free we americans like to play laughter rings out in the land on the beaches of the atlantic in the pacific and the gulf of lakes and rivers and streams millions of us are ardent devotees of the national game of baseball on each coast is a great exposition to teach us amuse us and amaze us one has arisen outside of new york city on the flushing meadows the other on treasure island in beautiful san francisco bay all the year round the out of doors calls us bidding us forget all care and live an hour or two with nature in her ever-changing wonderland always fascinating whether in the crisp cold of winter or on a soft june evening out in the woods [Music] back in 1900 men were still doing many laborious tasks by hand then came the beginning of a new program of action the american way which consists of an endless chain of four links endless because no one can say which comes first one link was quantity production by which products of finer quality were produced in greater numbers at a price within the reach of everybody general education was essential to the american way so the people could learn the advantages of a product from magazine advertising from newspapers that daily tell a hundred sales stories from billboards that display a message so that he who runs may read and from the radio that takes education directly into the home now we have national desire exemplified by a hurrying stream of shoppers quantity production means a product that combines high quality with low cost returning more value on the investment whether it's an automobile or a cake of soap nationwide distribution means laying down the product in every community for the convenience of the prospective buyer [Music] general education is accomplished by advertising in all its forms and through all available media thus is engendered national desire the result is the american way unapproached even unique as it operates day in and day out in furtherance of the health happiness and well-being of all of us of higher standards of living than exist elsewhere in the world here in the land of the free this was a mighty snappy job not so long ago only 40 years in fact and yet this scene almost takes us back to the dark ages so rapid has been the growth of the automotive industry the outstanding example of the american way in operation in 1900 there were only 8 000 motor vehicles registered in the united states by 1906 the number had grown to a hundred and five thousand we topped the million mark for the first time in 1913 with one million two hundred fifty eight thousand registrations two years later the total was two million four hundred forty five thousand and the curve went steadily upward through the years three and a half million in 1916 5 million in 17 6 million in eighteen seven and a half million in nineteen and nine and a quarter million in nineteen twenty what a growth that was in a score of years but it still went on and up 15 million in 1923 22 million in 26 26 and a half million in 30 28 million in 36 and 29 and a half million last year think of it in 40 years we have built a total of 62 and a quarter million motor vehicles and we're going to keep right on building them more and more for americans always have demanded and always will demand these necessities of good living now for the men and women who build the cars motor car companies employ as many as a half a million persons in a year and pay them as much as 800 million dollars in twelve months another million and a quarter are employed in sales and service and when you consider the related manufacturers who depend on the automobile business you find on the payrolls more than six million employees one out of every seven gainfully employed in the united states america's road building program went hand in hand with the development of motor transportation until now we have three hundred and sixty thousand miles of surfaced highways in the fiscal year of 1939 more than three and a half million men were employed on road construction and maintenance the motorists of america fill their tanks each year with 22 billion gallons of gasoline 90 percent of the total united states production automobile manufacturers shipped their product in three million freight car loads for which they pay the railroads the staggering total of 360 million dollars the automotive industry writes many another big check in a year it spends more than 23 million dollars for cotton nearly 3 million is the bill for wool and another 2 million goes for mohair the cattlemen receive more than one and three-quarters million dollars for heights and there are many other commodities of which the industry is the largest single consumer such as rubber 80 percent plate glass 69 alloy steel 54 malleable iron 53 tripped steel 51 cheap steel 41 lead 35 nickel 29 every state in the union contributes to the building of automobiles and every state profits new england weavers make fabrics for upholstery from the northwest comes lumber millions of feet of it from the south comes sugarcane and cotton millions of pounds of it from the southwest comes oil billions of gallons of it from the middle west come corn and wheat soybeans and flaxseed millions of bushels of it from ranchers and farmers the country over come sheep and cattle and hogs millions of them from nature's bountiful storehouse of treasures in the earth come iron and lead zinc and nickel tin and aluminum copper and coal mercury and silver tungsten and bauxite vanadium molybdenum and manganese truly all america builds the automobile it's a nationwide collaboration of 48 states cooperating to achieve a common purpose and it could happen nowhere but here in the land of the free where men can still dream dreams and make them come true close the patent office no siree not while there are still americans ever striving to make this a better world to live in [Music] this is the patent office no sir um fascinating film i i um obviously was opposed to world war ii um when the united states was enjoying some uh success is after the depression we just won a war everything was great um except that it wasn't always great for everybody but um yeah it's one of these rah-rah films that this would potentially be shown uh before a feature film would be shown maybe in conjunction with uh showing off um the most recent car models um a car dealership might rent a theater and invite people for a free night of entertainment and this would be what they would watch and then there would be maybe a slideshow or something showing off the new year's cars um but thanks everybody for tuning in today as always it's it's great to show you stuff um september is going away in october my favorite month of the year is uh
