played this song in a while so let's go ahead and just knock out the day with this start off our three day weekend with this i can check that gear in a minute so don't touch anything okay [Music] hey told them not to touch anything all right i guess i wasn't thinking you weren't thinking you mean you'll work on engines and machinery and not think of your own personal safety here shake hands with danger shake hands with danger meet a man you ought [Music] i was young and feisty never did things by the book just let me get my tool box and i'll take myself i climbed up on a dozier with my mechanics pride said you can keep it running friend while i [Music] three finger joe although i learned a lesson i forgot it soon enough the knicks and burns and scratches showed the young ones i was tough till another morning i was grinding on some steel my other hand got careless and fed my skin into the wheel shake hands with danger step right up and say hello grinding wheels and metal are what made me heal three-fingered i've seen mechanics burning and i've seen them take a fall just to save themselves a minute i've seen them lose at all i've watched them caught in trouble seen them take a chance and lose they get careless for a moment and spend a lifetime with the blues [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] walk around inside [Music] move around inside [Music] shake hands with danger and some friends i used to know compared to them i'm lucky to be just three finger joes [Music] [Laughter] so yeah so this shirt made by a friend of mine who works at hunt library at nc state i mean he just took the logo from a screenshot and uploaded it and then made it so but he's the first one that did it so kudos to him i put a link in the comments uh if you were interested in purchasing one um yeah they feel pretty good and i'm not sure what the process is i don't think it's it feels like screen printed but i'm not 100 sure i used to screen print back in the day so all this new technology man uh anyways we watch old 16 millimeter educational films and um occasionally we watch a remix of a uh song from one of the educational films this is what we just saw and prior to that we watched some raw stock footage from um cornet films of probably more argentina footage because we got a bunch of that i think they really somebody went down there and shot a bunch of footage and so they're like well we're down here so let's shoot as much as we can uh this next film is fascinating this is part of a kind of a a bunch of films that are all about pe for young kids uh physical education and they don't deal with the specifics of sports but they deal with the specifics of movement and body awareness and it made me realize like oh yeah like all those things that we did as kids it was all about less us activating our arms our legs our limbs being aware of where our body is and how we manipulate it and teaching us coordination and so when we did the hokey pokey it was a lot of fun but it really was about um you know coordinating our bodies in some way and when we did the parachute again it was all these these tricks to get us to do these these things and so i have a couple of films that kind of deal with this in really interesting ways this one they all have really strange titles this one is time and space awareness enjoy so this one takes a little while to get going and i think it has a long leader too so you get your money's worth on this one this lesson has as its objective the encouragement of space awareness and the practice of changes of speed necessary in a game situation today we're going to be concerned or thinking about two things one is about that space that we use in all of our games and the other is about changing speed when we're playing a game so first of all let's just move through space stay within our fence move all the way around try not to bump into anyone off you go off to death keep your eyes open eyes open big bag in and out don't forget to use the corners a little bit faster if you can stay controlled good now this time change speed fast medium slow medium back all the time go ahead don't forget when you go fast give it a go gary all right just fast this time just fast all right that was very good that time i saw fewer collisions this time than i've seen in a long time let's see if you can do it in a different way scott up you go and run all over this place all over the space is here without touching anybody now go fast okay greg jerry jerry concepts of space awareness and energy conservation through changing speeds are explored and refined by each individual before these elements are used in a game situation jerry over there ron john can you go faster without collisions good sarah off you go ted off you go this is beautiful beautiful oh we almost had one there didn't we go ahead go ahead go ahead freeze all right and rest right now rest right we're going to try this in a game that was very nice having you people move around all those spaces but are you ready to try it in a tagging yes just yes aren't you ready to go no some are and some aren't well we'll see what happens we'll try a ready position ready all right keep your eyes open off you go watch for your spaces stay right down alert interaction of individuals to space and speed concepts to the tagger to those tagged is was disappointed in the spaces remember we're thinking about changing speed but we're also also thinking about going through spaces so this time try it one more time and think let's see how many were scott some of you are already there slowly slowly easily easily in a space bob you kind of closed up the spaces there in space that's it now instead of locking me up let me ask the question how many really did look for spaces this second scene really now really all right how did you do it then how did you do it do you know john speak up and how did you do it well i was watching where she was then um then i'd look back and see all right so he's gotta keep his eyes open all the time did you change speed at all i love it there's other words that i have um that have kids in like bags like big big bags that they're kind of like pressing out on and it's uh it's becoming a genre i really like and you know certainly people call it uh little kid raves because they do seem like they're at a rave if you're playing um some music some techno music then it would look even more like a rave um this this next film is interesting uh i didn't watch it for a long time because it was ladybird story but it's it's not exactly what i thought it was going to be so this is why we collect films and we sometimes we watch films that the title is like hmm yeah i don't think this is interesting but for me this actually turned out to be a lot more interesting than i thought here's a ladybird story [Music] this world is full of insects they're interesting animals to watch they're important as well for many insects either help or obstruct the things people do [Music] they're called either beneficial or harmful insects our story is about one kind of beneficial insect and a harmful one as well here is a whole colony of the harmful insects firmly established on a fruit tree they're called cottony cushion scale they're sluggish slow-moving little creatures capable of doing great damage [Music] this is one single full-grown female scale although there are six legs concealed beneath the scale the adult insect spends her entire life in one place the white cottony mask called an egg sac comes directly out of the fully developed scale's body the scale lays her eggs right inside this egg sack when the egg sac is opened up it will sometimes contain the tiny eggs often it will contain the young scale insects themselves feeding on the cottony mass young scale are called crawlers when the crawlers reach a certain size they leave the egg sac and go out on their own unlike their mothers they are able to move about perhaps to find a new and better feeding place on the same tree they may even establish a colony like this one on another tree nearby the cockney cushion scale is a harmful insect because of what it eats a piercing mouth sinks right in and sucks out the plant juices you can always find masses of sticky substance in a colony of cottony cushion scale this is mostly the tree sap that the scale sucks from the tree and passes through its body this scale attacks many fruit-bearing trees trees that give us apples peaches walnuts and citrus fruits like oranges lemons and grapefruit just to mention a few of the harmful insects victims his scale was first noticed in the united states in 1872 let's turn back the clock to those days and see how this little insect nearly ruined a large industry shortly after the scale was first noticed the effects became alarmingly apparent in the citrus groves in parts of california the fruit of heavily infested trees was of little value many of the trees died completely but not the scale insects that caused their deaths within a very few years many people were forced to leave their groves indeed the citrus industry was facing ruin during this time a certain albert kibeli and others studied the scale there seemed to be no effective poison spray or no natural enemy of the insect yet a way had to be found to control the pest or a great industry would be lost in an effort to solve the problem mr kibeli was sent all the way to australia to find out why this destructive scale a native of that country did not destroy crops there as it was doing in the united states kimberly found that the cottony cushion scale was not nearly as widespread in australia he discovered too that wherever there was any scale there was something else always present he carefully collected this new discovery and sent it back to california what did mr keebley find that might benefit the citrus growers in california why some tiny ladybird beetles of a particular species called the vidalia ladybird beetle he sent just 28 beetles in his first shipment the vidalias were hungry but they had very particular appetites and would apparently eat only one thing cottony cushion scale these particular ladybirds would die if they could not feed upon this particular insect pest and the eggs and young of the pests and what appetites they had there still remained however one important question would these little beetles survive and multiply in a new land the beetles were released in heavily infested areas where they could be carefully watched and studied soon it was noticed that the beetles began to lay eggs but they didn't lay them just anywhere each female laid her reddish-colored eggs in clusters of three or four right on or near the egg sac of the cottony cushion scale the ladybird egg soon hatched into hungry little larvae the larvae didn't have to hunt for food they were born sitting on their first meal as one source of food supply became exhausted the larvae would hunt for more and like their parents would eat the scale at all stages of their development the vidalia larvae thrived on their diet apparently quite content with this new land so long as there was plenty of cottony cushion scale to eat the larvae grew rapidly there's only a few days difference in the age of these two yet they were the same size at birth when the time came each larva stopped eating attached itself to a leaf and slept or pupated like so many other insects although there was little noticeable movement great changes were taking place during this stage of life about a week later out of each pupa there emerged an adult beetle a very hungry little beetle the cycle of life was thus repeated again and again thousands of times over until within just two short years the cottony cushion scale was under control the groves turned green again the fruit rich and juicy and what happened to the vidalia's they thrived and spread throughout the citrus lands and isn't it amazing that only 514 beetles were sent over from australia the vidalia's entire life from egg through adult averages only about two months and yet even today you will almost always find these little beetles in all stages of life wherever you find cottony cushion scale developing very busily working for the benefit of man the vidalia is only one of many kinds of ladybird beetles except for a very few species all of these little insects are beneficial while the vidalia eats cottony cushion scale other ladybirds eat other kinds of pests ladybird beetles are quite common and there are lots of them it's easy to find at least one species in all stages of life almost anywhere during the spring and summer months and where you find the lady birds you're likely to find other insect pests like aphids that look somewhat different than scale insects but are closely related and very similar in their destructive habits it really staggers the imagination to think of the destruction these harmful insects could do if it were not for beneficial insects that feed upon them such as ladybird beetles and here's an amazing thing about some species when winter comes and food is no longer available nature protects and preserves these little beetles in a wonderful way for a period of hibernation now occurs [Music] it's here that ladybirds are found in greatest number the ground and trees covered with millions of them as they prepare to hibernate during the long cold winter ahead when spring comes the lady birds awaken perhaps to fly to some distant place and begin their beneficial work the vidalias will be working for the benefit of everyone in the citrus groves and fruit orchards just as lady birds will certainly be working for you right in your own backyard sorry i have remnants of an apple um this is the avg's lunch after all so i do occasionally eat um while i'm doing this show um yeah i didn't know what that film was about was it about lady bird johnson was it about a bird called a ladybird no idea so there you go appetizing uh footage of rotting fruits and vegetables and bugs foo and an incredibly fake beard and eyebrows really great um occasionally i get a request to show a film and sometimes i actually have the film um i can't always take requests but you know every once in a while you know it works out in the country it was a quiet day everything was calm and still there was hardly a ripple on the pond not a thing was stirring in the fields [Music] [Applause] johnny was on his way to uncle henry's farm you see johnny had a brand new sailboat and he wanted to sail it on uncle henry's big pond [Music] but johnny began to wonder was there enough wind to sail his boat he could see the clouds moving [Music] yes way up there the wind was blowing all right but down here how still and quiet everything was [Music] no it didn't look so good you can't sail a sailboat without a wind all of a sudden the flowers began to move and then johnny's hat could it be could it possibly be that the wind was starting to blow what do you think how can you tell when the wind is blowing you can't see the wind but you can see the trees moving and you can see where the wind is moving through the grass and you can see flowers dancing in the wind johnny knew another way we can use to see if the wind is blowing well thought johnny you can't see the wind but you can see the things it moves just as the little poem says who has seen the wind neither i nor you but when the leaves hang trembling the wind is passing through do you hear the wind doesn't it seem to be getting louder and stronger yes the wind is growing stronger what fun it is when the wind blows then johnny saw another way to have fun in the wind fun with milkweed [Music] this the wind can make you feel like a bird there's a poem that tells about that take my hand and let us run with the wind out in the sun we're so happy we could fly if the wind would blow us high [Music] running with the wind was fun but johnny wanted to get along to uncle henry's farm this was going to be a good day for sailing his boat a good windy day [Music] now what does johnny see [Music] he wants to get a closer look [Music] a scarecrow and the wind helps to make it look alive and scare away the crows [Music] does the wind help us in other ways it turns the windmill do you know what a windmill does it pumps water out of a deep well for the animals to drink [Music] the wind helps to dry the washing it helps to make houses cool in the summer [Music] [Applause] it helps airplanes to fly [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] yes the wind certainly does help us in many ways doesn't it [Music] but now johnny had reached uncle henry's farm and and there was uncle henry johnny couldn't wait to show his new boat and ask if it was all right to sail it on the pond then johnny told about the fun he had with the wind how he had seen the things the wind was blowing how he had felt the wind and heard it yes said uncle henry there's a good west wind blowing today a west wind how can you tell it's a west wind wonder johnny then uncle henry showed something to johnny can you guess what it was up on top of the barn a wind vane see the arrow is pointing to the w that means the wind is blowing from the west oh but look the wind is shifting now the wind is blowing from the south johnny knows a song about that the winds they blow from east to west from north or south which wait is best for men the land and men at sea for children to like you and me so listen to them listen to [Music] the wind that was blowing was a warm wind so johnny didn't need his jacket anymore uncle henry told him to be sure and stay at the shallow end of the pond where he could keep an eye on him as johnny hurried onto the pond he thought about the wind how it makes things move [Music] how you can hear it [Music] how it helps us in many ways [Music] how you can feel it and how it comes from different directions west south north or east and that's the story my friend johnny told me the story of his wonderful day with the wind [Applause] yes [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right that was nice um you know coronet classic coronet um it's interesting i i've said this before probably that i think you can tell the age of who the target audience is based on if they have a male narrator or female narrator that i think that younger children get a female narrator and older children get a male narrator and you know that's got to be a conscious decision on why they did that maybe they feel like younger kids respond to female voices their mom teacher etc i i don't know i don't know um the people that made those decisions are long gone by now and hopefully um in the archive of stuff that uh um cornet has maybe there's a letter that talks about it or a memo that says we need to you know delineate between the two i don't know somebody can write a research thesis about it okay so uh i have been since 2001 2002 i've been uh digitizing stuff for the perlinger archives and occasionally i run across the film that i'm like yeah i want to watch this and so this one um we put stuff up at internet archive um but there is literally several thousand films uh from the parallel archive that i have access to and so this one is one of interest this is uh petroleum at the new york world's fair and this is the not the 60s world's fair but the 30s world's fair in new york enjoy so so american industry on parade at the biggest show in history 150 million dollar show that played for two summers to an audience of millions of people from all parts of the country to people who learned many things they never knew before about steel and railroads automobiles and aviation and about the importance of the one great industry on which all these others must depend for continued operation petroleum here were gathered exhibits representative of the entire industry no one company being featured in any way exhibits so designed and presented with such dramatic and novel effect that the visitor might trace the development of this great industry from the discovery of the first oil will to the varied and complex uses of oil today and how it affects all of us in our daily lives far from being a mere shelter for a display the petroleum building in itself was carefully designed to focus attention upon the industry the great triangular structure resting upon four huge petroleum tanks was a streamlined modernization of a cooling tower the walls rose 80 feet above the ground each side measuring 200 feet and the concave wall design included effective night lighting so as to keep the brilliant blue color equally attractive both night and day the observation roof afforded a superior vantage point from which to view the fairgrounds a modern well-equipped restaurant deep comfortable lounges and chairs and tables conveniently placed provided rest and relaxation for visitors while on all three sides the movement color and life of the fair's vast panorama lay before the visitors eyes and one could linger and view the dazzling sights at leisure the strange modernistic buildings forward in design and bold in color housing the wonders of industry science art education commerce and communications the courts fountains and colorful displays of flowers and shrubs the flags the music the endless stream of people a sight to challenge the mind and stimulate the imagination a modern miracle come to life on what was once a barren flatland [Music] and towering above it all the highest oil derrick in the world rearing its giant framework against the sky a tension compelling in its structure an exact duplicate of the thousands of oil derricks to be found in oil fields all over the world from mountains to coastal plains wherever man seeks to find nature's petroleum deposits this derrick and well beneath it were constructed in order that every detail of modern oil drilling methods might be demonstrated to the public at the fair 200 feet in height it weighed nearly 40 tons its base was 34 feet square and could support a load of a million pounds the well beneath it 440 feet deep was bottomed in solid granite cased off with a steel pipe and cemented from top to bottom while from the crown all glory kept proud watch a sign directed visitors to the derrick exhibit on the demonstration shows which were put on many times a day giving thousands who had never seen an oil well some idea of the great labor and cost involved in the production of oil and depicting the work of the men who bring up petroleum from the depths of the earth as visitors crowded around the derrick while kat ross the announcer for station p-e-t-e the petroleum broadcasting system delivered a lecture on the rotary method of drilling for oil the equipment was described in every detail of the operation [Music] the derrick man his working position on this derrick was 110 feet above the derrick floor hooking on his safety belt he rides the drill pipe up into the derrick where the pipe is stacked while the announcer described his job up there in latching or unlatching the elevators on the pipe and how he racks it in the derrick each member of the drilling crew as well as the announcer was recruited from major oil fields in texas or oklahoma experienced oil men who by their teamwork their expert handling of this equipment gave the audience a realistic view of actual operations here are the giant rotary tongs and the huge winch is suspended on cables with counterbalance weights beneath the derrick floor and here the intent faces of the crowds of people who gathered around the derrick at every show people who had never seen an oil well drilled before and probably never would again their deep and absorbed interest is indicative of the fact that this was a never to be forgotten experience which gave thousands of people a new concept of the actual production of oil they saw the diesel electric unit of 700 horsepower half a million watts of electricity capable of drilling oil wells to depths exceeding 15 000 feet almost three miles down the man at the controls who is the head driller boss of the job at all times and the success or failure of the oil well dependent on his experience and judgment yes the crowds followed every step of the procedure people from all walks of life drawn here from all over the land people learning about petroleum all the day by day procedure in drilling for oil as employed by the oil companies in the great oil fields was re-enacted there were descriptions of the pipe being used and the safety methods employed in handling this heavy equipment as the derrick man rode down with the last stand of drill pipe the narrator described the various rock formations through which the drill must penetrate and the climatic and working conditions found in oil fields from pennsylvania to california here the spectators learned something of the operation of the drill stem the swivel unit and the speed of drilling the functions of the different parts of equipment shown on the drill floor were described as well as the process of pumping mud through the rotary hose the number of pounds of mud pump per minute the work of the gun perforator and how it operates [Applause] as the drill was lowered in the derrick the narrator described the drill collar in the construction of the drilling bed itself the flexibility of the pipe and the speed of drilling and how wells could be sunk at angles under lakes rivers oceans as well as tall buildings the crowds followed every detail as the drill went into action they heard a description of the electric photographic outfit and its ability to picture the bottom of the drill hole to permit directional drilling they heard of the difficulties involved in fishing for lost drill pipe drilling bits and other equipment and how the drilling bits are replaced and again lowered to the bottom of the hole slowly the crowds passed by each exhibit saw the giant pump capable of lifting oil from a depth of 8 000 feet competent geologists were on duty to answer all questions on geology and formations and to exhibit the complete geological display every hour during the day the colorful and intriguing motion picture oil can and does was shown on a great screen in one angle of the hall of industry plot and action were carried out by a puppet character called petroleum and a large number of supplementary puppets called petroleum cousins every show played to large audiences creating goodwill for the petroleum industry and its products by this interesting and amusing method of illustrating the use of petroleum in our normal everyday life and what would happen to the modern world if the supply of petroleum were to come to an end in fact there was an interesting and colorful exhibit of some kind always in progress in the petroleum building exhibits linking petroleum to the world of today and tomorrow in this little show about the use of petroleum on the farm and in the home hundreds of thousands of visitors to the petroleum building learned of countless uses of petroleum quite unfamiliar to them the housewife represented the average american who either does not know or does not realize the many ways in which petroleum is used in the home and on the farm from the dialogue between the oil salesman and the housewife visitors to this exhibit learned that petroleum is used throughout the construction of the house from the asphalt and the cellar to the shingles on the roof that modern homes of today are waterproofed and weatherproof through the use of petroleum products they learn that petroleum is in building paper in varnish in paint that it preserves wood and inhibits rust the salesman explained to the housewife that oil goes into insecticides and fertilizers but oil is needed in cars trucks and tractors to keep them operating smoothly and efficiently visitors learn that oil produces kerosene and diesel fuel used in farm equipment and that it goes into the making of rubber tires and is also used in refrigeration that even the cosmetics the lady wears contain oil her lipstick and rouge her creams and lotions are nail polish and perfume at last the salesman convinces the housewife that petroleum meets many real needs in her home [Music] the second show presented to the public demonstrated the importance of petroleum in transportation the bride and groom starting on a modern honeymoon in an airplane powered by high octane gasoline recounted a history of travel from the time of old dubbin until the present day as the couple pointed to the different exhibits which were lighted in turn they told of the chronological development of various methods of transportation which went hand in hand with refining developments during the last eighty years drawing comparisons between transportation methods at different time stages here the public learned of the drilling of the first oil well 80 years ago and the first uses of oil in transportation and the great strides in the development of automobile and aviation engines which have been made possible by petroleum research and improved refining methods as the skit concluded the couple emphasized the improvement in oil affected by research and mentioned the benefits of knockless engine operation increased acceleration and better lubrication which the motoring public enjoys today the third petroleum show was based on a discussion of the gas dollar and where it goes the attendant explained to his customer how every penny of the dollar she pays for gasoline is spent here the public learned of the many and varied taxes which the oil industry pays taxes totaling 25 cents of every gas dollar of the huge payrolls in the oil industry representing 28 cents of every gas dollar that 10 cents of every gas dollar goes for service stations for the benefit of the motoring public that the costs of pipelines wells and refineries absorb 34 and one-half cents of each dollar that management claims only half a penny of the gas dollar and that the remaining two cents represents profits profits which are returned to the people who have invested their savings in the oil industry one of the most unusual and convincing displays was that of petroleum in industry the mechanic and his son conversing in the machine shop discussed and emphasized the many uses of oil in keeping the machinery of industry well oiled and running smoothly grinders shapers lathes drill press and an airplane motor were prominently displayed and visitors learned about the many uses of oil beside that of lubrication of machinery they learned about oil and water mixtures used for cooling mixtures achieved by chemical research which make it possible to cool and lubricate work simultaneously they learned of the uses of oil in hydraulic pressure and the accuracy necessary in internal grinders used for airplane engines which must be accurate to within a 25 000 of an inch they learned that oil pumped under pressure assures smooth action and accuracy in this delicate operation they learned of the special importance of lubricants for the superchargers which spin in airplane motors 30 000 times per minute the work of the world powered and cushioned by oil all the little known facts about oils for industrial lubrication were presented in this exhibit the only team of oxen at the new york world's fair drawing an old-fashioned wagon illustrated transportation in bygone days as the wagon makes its slow laborious way along the road a vivid contrast could be drawn between it and the transportation methods of today we see the huge creaking wheels lubricated with the first crude forms of grease and could compare these with our modern lubricating equipment water wheels and windmills portrayed primitive methods of developing power prior to the 19th century accustomed as we are to modern high-speed machines it is difficult to imagine that this huge water wheel was once an important source of power on this beautiful relief map the public saw natural gas lines crude oil lines pumping stations refineries and derricks light up as a commentator traced the history of oil in our country from the time of colonel drake at titusville pennsylvania in 1859 to the present time [Music] it was pointed out that each of the 900 little green derricks on the map represented an entire oil field not just one well and that each field thus designated has hundreds of wells depth of wells and the total amount of crude oil produced in the united states and other information of interest was supplied by a scroll at the rear of the map which was synchronized with the operation of the lights on the map the public was able to study the network of 280 000 miles of underground pipelines which transport the crude oil safely from the fields to the refineries and from the refineries to different points of distribution and consumption they learned of the movement of oil not only by pipeline but by tank cars ocean tankers and barges and that one third of all the freight tonnage handled in the united states today is composed of or related to petroleum products as the map darkened and the lights representing derricks oil fields pipelines and refineries were shown in vivid colors the visitors were able to get a comprehensive idea of the enormous extent of petroleum production transportation and distribution a 14 billion dollar industry which has helped make the american standard of living the highest in the world another phase of the vast petroleum industry was illustrated to the public by the model miniature oil refinery where a lecturer described four different ways of refining crude oil here in front of the chart showing refining methods of technical research the public learned of the ceaseless research which has resulted in countless new petroleum products for the world of today and tomorrow here the visitor could trace the course of the crude oil from the time it entered the refinery until it emerged as many different byproducts they saw a model miniature refinery accurately worked out to scale typical of modern refineries in use today capable of refining any type of crude oil and producing all of the products which we now get from petroleum the narrator described the storage of crude oil in the huge tanks bordering the refinery traced the oil through the crude pipe stills to the bubble towers or fractionizing units then followed the cuts of gas oil through the complete refining processes to the finished products [Music] the wall charts also demonstrated clearly to fair visitors a few of the many intricate and scientific processes by which petroleum is refined [Music] the cracking process illustrated the method by which refiners obtained a higher gasoline content from their crude base stock as high as 60 percent content from the proper stock visitors learned about the work of the absorption units whose trays filled with absorption oil absorbs the heavy structures of gas present each step in the process of polymerization dewaxing and purifying was graphically and simply illustrated and explained in a manner comprehensive to all and as night falls and the sky bursts into light and color we see the petroleum building set like a great blue jewel in the night reflected in the waters of the lake surrounding the perisphere while from the roof there is spread before us the spectacular display of water light flame and color the thrilling pageant of the greatest spectacle of our time [Music] so uh 1936 world's fair i know some of you were surprised to see um like people would actually attend a play about gasoline or about petroleum uh entertainment at the 1936 world's fair was fascinating it's what we often call the 1936 boobs fair because of how many exhibits featured topless women these weren't educational exhibits these were um just a weird variety of things there was there was a pavilion that was designed by salvador dali there was which had uh women scandily clad women there was um this kind of fake nudist uh colony where you could go and see women that were wearing these sheer tops of sitting around smoking maybe playing volleyball uh there was this uh i think it was called magazine covers pavilion where it was basically different women live women uh in different positions on different types of magazine covers that were topless uh it was uh i've seen this because of the home movies that we've transferred from that time period and i've seen quite a few so um yeah i was either seeing topless women or watching a um entertaining film about gas where gas dollars go i wish you know you know if i went back in time that would be one of the places i would love to go just the sights and the sounds uh and just
