so so so hello everybody welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show i'm skip alzheimer and that was an advanced digital oz osmo meter osmometer um it measures uh the osmatic when i looked it up now i can't remember what it was uh an osmo meter is a device for measuring the osmotic strength of a solution colloid or a compound there are several different techniques employed in oz uh mama tree uh vapor pressure osmometers determine the concentration of automatically active particles that reduce the vapor pressure of the solution there there you go so um that's some silent footage i don't know if i bought that i think i probably bought that on ebay back when i was like oh this looks cool oh this looks cool oh i don't know what this is oh this looks cool um i did that for a while when i had a computer job and i was uh drinking a lot of coffee so i had all this uh income that i would just spend i would just look on ebay all day and just buy things and uh it was also when i was selling some things too and they were going for a lot of money i don't know if that happens nowadays but um because i kind of have mostly given up ebay at least for selling stuff anyhow we had the film set up on the telecity behind me um i have not watched it probably since i first got it and um which was probably in the 90s uh so there you go welcome the other thing that's interesting about this film is this is film 1998. uh we've been showing films actually prior to this live um used to be one sunday a month but after the pandemic started and my live shows kind of stopped happening i decided that what i would do is a lunchtime streaming show that was in mid march of last year and uh it turned out to be really great i met a lot of cool people who are in the chat um i got to show you a bunch of stuff uh some of my favorites but also some new brand new stuff that i've never shown anyone before so um we're gonna keep doing this until i just can't do it anymore for whatever reason um and so i have a film set up for uh the 1999th film and of course i've shown this before um but this is uh a new transfer of it and this is from actually from the library of congress they i think i know where they got the film uh my copies i have two copies of this film and they're beat up chewed up at the beginning so i've never really seen the actual uncut beginning um and the color in this is just pristine i think this came from um fred macdonald who was a film collector archivist academic who was based in chicago and he gave his films to the library of congress upon his death and uh they've been slowly scanning some of them so this film is uh uh shows what it's like in the future so this is 1999 a.d this is like i said it's a brand new scan and it's beautiful so enjoy our 1999 film oh [Music] oh [Music] so [Music] ah [Music] mom how did the ghost fly well they ride on the air like an air car sort of what are you building jamie it's our house can't you tell yes but you haven't finished it what did i forget what's this room at the center where i go to school and this that's where the computer lives and where i go to sleep and where you and daddy sleep and where we go to swim and where we see the ball game and the symphony what it what is that well you left out the room where you're supposed to scrub behind your ears oh yeah the bath core right and there's one more the health center where daddy exercises and gets measured right how does the computer know everything i mean like i mean like how many times to exercise and all i haven't the faintest notion that's just too much for your old mother to understand old you're not so old well i'll be 44 next year that's not so old not anymore what year is it now i forgot here i'll show you [Music] 1999 a.d more than a generation away and yet dreams travel faster than light and even now scientists and planners are shaping the lives of our children who will live in the 21st century how will they live perhaps in a honeycomb structure like this the oldest strongest natural shape known hexagon modules that grow with the family size and interests michael shaw 45 husband father is an astrophysicist several days each week he commutes to a distant laboratory where he's engaged in the mars one project the colonization of the first planet his minor in the some 10 years he attended a midwestern university was botany it is one of his many continuing hobbies he is engrossed on this sunny morning in the study of the cellular structure of a new exotic fruit tree hopefully his experiments will produce a giant peach with a thick protective skin much like that of a tangerine this is one of the many 21st century devices or appliances that are part of the everyday life of the shore family this workbench with its electronic screen enables michael to call up photographic sections of the two parent fruit trees from which he began his experiments three years ago [Music] at that time he stored the two photographic images in the central home computer which is secretary librarian banker teacher medical technician bridge partner and all-around servant in this house of tomorrow all pertinent information about this family its records its tastes and reference material is stored in these memory banks available instantly to every member of the family [Music] master james shaw eight years old student attends formal school two mornings a week much of his education however is carried on in a kind of education center within the home and so an era that began 500 years earlier with copernicus and galileo ends as the first astronaut takes his first halting steps onto the shores of the moon and begins a new age of man his assignments are programmed into the home computer and fed into teaching machines which allow him to progress as rapidly as his awakening mind can absorb the audio-visual lessons so [Music] this is lecture 102 galileo's life work and indeed his personal character can perhaps be exemplified by describing one of his early experiments according to aristotle a body that falls possesses weight those that do not fall have no weight since air does not fall it has no weight galileo decided to examine this conclusion in his own fashion karen anshul 43 wife mother part-time homemaker hey mom i'm hungry yeah me too how about lunch how about two minutes okay two [Music] split second lunches color-keyed disposable dishes all part of the instant society of tomorrow a society rich in leisure and taken for granted comforts at the turn of the next century most food will be stored frozen in individual portions the computer will keep a running inventory on all food stuffs and suggest daily menus based on the nutritional needs of the family when the meal has been selected the various portions are fed automatically into the microwave oven for a few seconds of de-throwing or warming the house of 1999 will be virtually maintenance-free a central atmospheric system will maintain constant year-round temperatures and control humidity bacteria pollen and dust clothing of the non-disposable variety will be stored in cleaning closets where a chemical vapor atmosphere and an ultrasonic vibrator will remove dirt particles they will be carried out electronically a central bank computer will debit the family's account the amount of purchases and credit the department store for example informing the family's home computer at the same time [Music] father at the touch of a button receives an instantaneous printed copy of his budget the amount of taxes he owes the payments left on the car and so forth all documents and household records are available on the video screen for immediate reference also at his disposal is an electronic correspondence machine or home post office which allows for instant written communication between individuals anywhere in the world to maintain these and hundreds of complex electronic circuits a monitor checks all circuits every few seconds inserts a backup circuit if and when trouble develops and alerts the communal service agency for replacement the home energy center with its fuel cell furnishes power provides absolutely pure water burns waste and heats or cools the rooms too computerized too cold the world of tomorrow will be as cold as sunlight tuned through photochromic windows [Music] it will be as wide as the ocean which will provide not only recreation for the adventurers but an increasing variety of hydrocultured exotic fresh foodstuffs and tomorrow will be as happy as music hey chopin what's up oh playing a song ah what's it called i forgot you faker how about playing the song we learned yesterday okay [Laughter] let's augment us a bit shall we [Music] yes life will be richer easier healthier as space age dreams come true as part of his everyday regime michael shaw enters this home health center he lies for perhaps 15 seconds on a kind of medical couch his weight temperature pulse respiration blood pressure and electrocardiogram are routinely recorded at the same time his body is scanned for any isolated temperature pockets that signal oncoming disease or a localized infection at the end of the examination period the computer calculates the amount of exercise necessary to balance mike's food intake and maintain proper muscle tone exercise requirements eight and one half minutes bicycle six minutes programmed calisthenics oh that's ridiculous this thing can make a mistake you know your weight increase over 30 days 1.1 kilograms repeat exercise requirements eight and one half minutes bicycle six minutes program calisthenics confirm please the computer now relays any important physical changes to a central community medical center where mike's personal physician will be alerted for further diagnosis at conclusion of the exercise period the pertinent data are again recorded for comparison with pre-exercise measurements the results are again forwarded to the community medical center for further study if necessary if the computerized life occasionally extracts its pound of flesh it holds out some interesting rewards hi fred how's the old golf game ah don't ask six inches of snow and a blizzard on the way what do you got in mind oh how about some golf with pebble beach saturday afternoon great anything to get out of here all right hold on a minute i don't know the coast looks a little doubtful there's a low moving in let me check mexico city that looks great all right here's what we'll do we'll meet at the el centro about noon have some lunch and then we'll tee off great only this time i'm gonna have to get about two strokes aside because i haven't been playing all winter and i'm a little rusty and i know that you've probably been playing every day right sure in a virtually dirt free environment karen shore several hours a week gets her hands very dirty she's a skilled potter her work decorates their home and the homes of many of their friends during her career years she was a teacher of fine arts now she's able to continue practicing her crafts because the household demands on her time have been greatly diminished in the same way jamie although he has a rigorous lesson schedule is already taking advantage of his electronic world [Music] who's your worthy opponent dad oh i'm replaying that game we had sunday he's a little loose with his queen and i want to see if i can work that trap that bobby fischer used in the world games your dad will be home soon why don't you wait and play him live okay well philippines oh i've never had a fishing like that anywhere in the world i still see you can't beat the amazon you know i happen to catch a live performance of a great sensational new stinger from made the switch you got to keep up with the times you know yeah but um but what well there's a 3-d and 4-d you know what's next what's next you never know you never really know [Music] what's next the things you've seen are technically possible today it remains only to apply what we now know to fulfill these dreams of tomorrow the world of 1999 and beyond is limited only by the boundaries of our imagination today [Music] never really know um so when i first posted that film online people thought it was fake um and uh there was um i actually got a phone call from um who was it from a tv station in la that wanted they were doing uh something about uh viral videos and asked me if it was fake and i said well um you know the person you can ask you're in la why don't you find wink martindale and so they found wake martindale and sure enough um he did an interview for them and talked about the uh making the film back in 1967 and so this was pretty great all right so you can just barely see me um all that coffee that you've been donating over the last year and a half or so i've been using some of it for coffee but i've also been saving some pennies and so i just wanted to show this what what i used with some of those pennies um thanks to a fan um whoops let me see if i can get a better shot of this um uh danielle james uh who she opened her own neon shop in durham she i commissioned her to make a neon sign of the av geeks lobo logo um and so there we are there's the neon um and so surprise happy 2000th film uh this next film uh again has the words 2000 in the title and i have not shown this film yet uh i'm zoomed all zoomed in so you can actually see the um let's see if i can zoom out um while we're doing this uh so my assistant just hung this today zooming out zooming out zooming out you can't see me zooming out but that's what i'm doing now all right almost almost there um so you can see it is next to the our telecini the clown portrait and of course the club that i won from um it is my gallery of honor thank you danielle um right so the 2000th film has the word has the number 2000 in the title and let's go ahead and watch it uh after i found this film the 1999 film i was like i gotta collect films about the future that were made in the past because they're awesome so uh this is one of those examples i think i got this on ebay because i was actively looking for the term future to see what the what they would show future all right so here it is uh towards the year 2000 lab in space enjoy [Music] this is the shape of the future in space [Music] laboratories in earth orbit with powerful telescopes to study the solar system reusable nuclear-powered shuttles hopping between earth and moon [Music] space tugs for inter-orbital transport shuttles to service automated satellites or for space rescue [Music] permanent bases as tall as 10-story buildings so large they must be assembled in space this was the space spectacular of the 60s as astronaut pete conrad brought apollo 12 to the surface of the moon it was the culmination of the most expensive adventure in human history the 70s will see something new in space programs economy and other flags may find their way to the moon as the united states shops for angels to help bankroll future space missions commander pete conrad countries that we've primarily been talking to recently along these lines are canada in england germany and japan i don't know that the russians would want to take part in in some venture with us i'm sure that if they did we'd be willing to cooperate this is the third stage of a saturn booster the part that is thrown away once the fuel it carries has been used up no longer the ten thousand cubic feet of space large enough to hold a seven-room house will be fitted out as a laboratory in the sky with living and working quarters for a three-man crew astronaut robert overmeyer describes the other stages that make up the skylab additional stages are the multiple docking adapter in this area and the airlock module in this area down in this area of the vehicle we will have our experiment quarters and our living quarters now these living quarters will look it's very similar to living quarters on present aircraft with lavatory facilities kitchen facilities and recreational facilities and sleep facilities also sometime during 1972 the skylab perched atop a saturn v booster will be blasted into orbit two days later three astronauts riding an apollo command module will follow skylab into space once in orbit the astronauts will begin the delicate task of docking a maneuver whose difficulties have been compared to a drunken woman trying to drive her car into a garage that is constantly rolling away all this of course must be accomplished at seventeen thousand miles per hour inside a closed box that has no up or down skylab's mission will be to test man's ability to live and work in space for periods of up to two months and to scan the solar system with high power telescopes and electronic sensors [Music] skylab will provide insights into the human engineering problems of designing large permanent stations for interplanetary travel travel to mars may take three years a year going a year there and a year to return and the life support systems will be developed in space stations that are a larger version of skylab [Music] skylab is a two-story space home the lower level where the astronauts will spend most of their time has four rooms a work room a wardrobe a bathroom called the waste management area and beyond that a bedroom how will people live in a lab in the sky scientist engineers at mcdonald douglas demonstrate the routine [Music] the astronauts will spend most of their time working the purpose of skylab is to record and evaluate biomedical problems of the weightless near vacuum environment to monitor the earth 235 miles away with special earth sensing equipment and to conduct solar telescope experiments [Music] [Music] the wardroom will be the center of activity it serves for lunch and recreation videotape movies games stereotype players television being from earth books and of course one of man's oldest pursuits card games man's oldest pursuit woman is not in the cards for the skylab crew the reason is not brutally but mathematics a skylab crew numbers three astronauts and no one has been able to decide what should be the sexual mix two men and one woman such triangles are difficult enough to deal with on earth in the confines of an orbiting space laboratory nasa is not ready to cope with the experimental possibilities and so card games played on a magnetized table with small magnets used to keep the cards from floating away in the zero g environment are as exciting as recreation is likely to get for the crew of skylab [Music] the paddles that make skylab look like a runaway windmill are solar power cells that absorb and store the sun's energy which is converted into electricity to power electrical systems in the space station and before you cheated who's winning i agree with him he's a professional player well that's the problem when you're playing with somebody and teaching you the game how about some lunch now that's what i came down for we've got the water tanks lawn check scientific airlocks ready for the scientific experiment so we can get to that right after we eat good [Music] i want some okay and gravy [Music] meals are fast in space you take a meal pouch spray in hot or cold water and dehydrated cardboard becomes vichy sois steak medium rare and parfait not the ultimate in gourmet meals but at least there is no dishwashing garbage is frozen into waste tanks for eventual return to earth [Music] the first crew to mann skylab will be short timers spending only 28 days aboard about two months after they leave a second three-man crew will go aboard they will stay for 56 days the third crew will rocket up the skylab a month later for another 56 days in space [Music] in space there is no day or night skylab circles the earth once every 90 minutes so the astronauts schedules cannot be geared to the rising and setting of the sun which happens every 90 minutes in this orbit eight hours is programmed for sleep astronauts can sleep in any position they want since there is no up or down in space sleeping sacks serve merely as restraints to keep an astronaut from floating away in his warm zero-g bed [Music] we would hope to gain from the sky lab program uh one of the real basic facts and as you notice this space station has no attempt at making artificial gravity we have to determine that man himself can survive for a year's period of time in the zero g environment [Music] i don't think many people realize how much work even the laziest man does on the ground and surviving in 1g every time he lifts his coffee cup or leans back in his desk chair he does expend a certain amount of energy overcoming gravity if you equate the normal amount of work that you do in a day just to live in our 1g and put that in the form of exercise in the space station you would be exercising on a bicycle or straining against springs or something for maybe eight hours of the day just to give yourself the same amount of exercise you get living on the ground we do realize then that man is going to have to exercise to keep his muscles home but i think we'll come to a compromise somewhere in between what you do on the ground and what you have to make up in the air it's about 92. body temperature 105. devices like the ergometer help the astronaut keep fit in this weightless environment and also provide a physiological readout on just how fit he is what's your body temperature bill hunter's back metabolic rate uh 850. heart rate of 96. all right i'll record the data okay jerry you should push your safety switch to depressurize the chamber another device provides negative pressure to the lower part of the body to measure changes in the astronauts cardiovascular system [Music] the skylab experiments come under several categories first are the scientific experiments the primary one in that mode is the apollo telescope mount photography of the sun during this photography we would hope to catch the sun spots and the solar flares on the sun this is important to us because by being above the earth's atmosphere we can study the sun in all of its spectrum in particular those areas which are normally blocked out by our atmosphere which makes the areas here on earth unable to study the sun [Music] this is a sun flare or prominence some reach out more than half a million miles from the surface of the sun they unleash more energy than a thousand thermonuclear bombs [Music] [Music] another area of study is the materials processing or welding in space is commonly called we will use a facility in the skylab to weld pieces of metal together in the environment of zero gravity we will also do metal forming and forming perfect spheres we're also going to grow crystals as used in transistors and color television sets it is believed that by growing crystals in the zero gravity of space we will get more perfect crystals and have a lower rejection rate [Music] skylab is the first attempt to put permanent laboratories into space once men have tested out all the new hardware and demonstrated their ability to live in space for long periods of time a new era of space exploration will begin [Music] this is the next step into space the shuttle although powered by rockets it looks more like an airplane than a spaceship and like the airplane it will not be thrown away after the trip [Music] the shuttle consists of an orbiter carried piggyback atop a booster once in space the orbiter separates from the booster [Music] the booster returns immediately to earth landing just as an airplane does and is ready in a few days for another flight [Music] the orbiter goes on into orbit carrying a fifty thousand pound payload of people and supplies [Music] it may function as a short-term space station or more likely supply the giant space stations due to be launched in 1978 [Music] the space station is laid out in what we hope to be a logical manner and that we have the state rooms where people will live and spend their off-duty time here is some areas of experimentation with experiment stowage over here again we have a couple of more state rooms in this area and over here would be sort of the operation of the space station which would concern itself with the environmental control system and the maneuvering of the space station and then up in here is the galley as it's envisioned in sort of the dining room and over here is a little lab with more experiment stowage here and the same layout generally exists around the four levels that you see here this space station looks like it's oriented up and down and that everything takes place on the floor and you'll notice that there is nothing on the ceiling or no passageways through the wall other than conventional doors and as this is a first cut at the space station i think that you'll find that it'll change in character you're liable to see equipment mounted out from the wall the natural way to move across this room would be to float right across the table rather than move in an upright position and as we gain more experience in efficient operation i think that the space station when it's finally designed will look very peculiar when seen on the ground and you think of operating in just one direction all the time you actually have to think of operating in a three-dimensional environment because you are not constrained to just the floor [Music] the 12-man crew will include scientists who are not astronauts whose sole task will be to study the earth and the universe from the vantage point of space mineral resources hidden from the earth's surface can be spotted from space the movement of fish in the seas can be charted with accuracy even the control of weather may be possible from space they tell me you can spot crop disease from space faster with the proper sensors than the farmer who has the diseased feel you can see pollution coming out of rivers you can track it by taking infrared photographs you can determine temperature gradients of the water in the oceans and the oceanographers are very interested in what they can learn about their ocean by using space robot explorers returning from other planets may drop off their samples here on the space station just as these moon rocks were brought to the lunar receiving laboratory in houston [Music] so [Laughter] [Music] sometime before the end of this century manned explorations to mars will be undertaken the orbiting skylab and the giant space stations will have served as models for the first colonies of earth men on other planets [Music] the crossing of space may help persuade men to throw away their tribal conflicts and turn their minds outward to the universe there is no way back into the past as h.g wells once said the choice is the universe for nothing [Music] towards the year 2000 with a dose of future shock where are we going when will we get there cities a mile high built like machines programmed for people travel by vacuum tube and photon propulsion laboratories in the sky [Music] wherever clothes and fashions undreamed of [Music] we may even have jet belts to jet around in the year 2000 [Music] get that uh that last little stinger at the end um wow yeah you have that band playing on the coast ctv this is probably canadian then um i love films like this and so i'm so happy that this is the 2000 film that we showed and i'm so happy that you joined us today for that um we'll be back again on
