and i don't remember any of it uh i am skip alzheimer and this is the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and talk about uh in the comments how much we know now and how wrong they were or were like wow they actually got it right um anyways uh we are having some inclement weather here in raleigh north carolina where the archive is based i heard some thunder so we're gonna keep going until the power goes out flickers or the internet goes out um which could happen i mean it happened uh last friday post show uh and there was no inclement weather it just suddenly we didn't have any power um so we'll just for some reason suddenly we're gone then you'll know what's up uh because it's a lot of computers and things that i have to turn on and let boot up and all that annoying stuff so thank you for joining us uh i don't think this is gonna happen but you never know um we love films that were made in the uh post world war ii that are about free enterprise especially ones that are animated in this one we stumbled across um thanks to the library of congress this is albert in blunderland [Music] hello my good people today i'm going to tell you about the bountiful blessings that will be ours when each of us produces for the welfare of the other nature itself furnishes many examples of efficiently controlled and planned economies why even the ants have eliminated competition and live according to a master plan of coordinated cooperation boy would i like to be an aunt so i say to you go to the end study ways and be wise study his ways and be wise be why i say what be what i mean who are you i sir am proud to be called an ant oh an aunt an aunt hey you guys got a plan where the government manages everything and the people get all the benefits huh oh indeed yes our planners give us everything we need would you care to come with me to androlia this i gotta see [Music] this is our first stop who are the characters they're the coordinators for the planning board and what's that gadget a job classifier [Music] boy oh boy me for one of those soft jobs [Music] no fair tilting the machine chum just let the little ball do its work our planning board invented this mechanical wizard to give each and every ant the freedom to choose his own job it operates on the principle of personality electronics the force impulses of your attitudes are transmitted to the ball causing it to drop into the proper slop hey this machine made a mistake i'm an auto mechanic here's my union card from now on you belong to the state union something bothering you oh no no my friend is happy to be chosen for membership in our glorious state union yes sir good day a good day tell him i don't think i like being told where i gotta work now old fellow one must give up a little freedom if one expects the government to take care of one sounds logical sounds confusing to me hey free movies hope it's heady gable the march advance brings you intimate views of our all-wise all-powerful planning board visibly engaged in breaking down the budget for the coming year now we shall leave our exalted leaders for a moment and travel around our happy country observing our plan in action no citizen of antrolia has to pay for transportation everyone has the right to a free ride here happy workers enjoy a free paid vacation and every angler is guaranteed at least one fish our minister of production has just released this year's quota 10 splendid modern radios to those lucky citizens holding ration books now we take you to our state radio news bureau where our favorite broadcaster brings you the news of the outside world flash election returns our planning board has just been reelected for the 50th consecutive term hey great picture very inspiring how do you know you were asleep all state produced pictures are always great come on we have to go to work say uh did did you vote for those guys oh indeed yes i'm assure my gratitude for all the planning board has done for me besides nobody dares vote against them anyway don't you ever disagree with them well sometimes i do have a few fake doubts did that let's get the bomb never mind it's for my own good thank you very much for the gentle reminder so sorry i had forgotten thoughts against the plan aren't allowed couldn't have that no sorry well here's where we work music while you work well that's pretty nice there's our machine that's our quota are they kidding why that quote is a cinch and with music yet very nifty [Music] see that's a better tempo [Music] wow that ants have much to teach us our antiquated american freedoms must be replaced by state planning boards who can establish controls that will guarantee [Applause] listen folks this dopes off his rocker now let me give you the real low down on them ants i'm i'm doing the microphone a different way i'm actually muting from the microphone versus from obs and i'm forgetting to do that uh so anyways uh aren't ants isn't that an aristocracy isn't it all they're in um working for the queen in the perpetuation of their uh nest or their hive question mark um anyways this that story is told again and again and again uh it's red nightmare same type of thing dad wakes up in a communist uh united states and goes through the same problems um there's a whole series of of crap i can't remember it's made by a tool company and i've shown some from it it's uh basically the same premise of what happens when a communist rule takes over and things are decided by a board and you get reassigned and you don't own your house anymore and you get moved and you don't get to pick what you work in and all that stuff so uh fascinating to see that it's definitely uh more comical um and uh frank nelson yes um great to to hear him uh in this as the aunt who looks a lot like jiminy cricket as some of you pointed out um all this talk about ants and we really need to talk about our other favorite social insect the bumblebee enjoy [Music] everyone knows the bumblebee it is a familiar insect found in all parts of the united states few people however have had the opportunity of looking into a bumblebee's nest the bumblebee usually chooses the abandoned nest of a mouse a chipmunk or a ground squirrel in april the bumblebee crawls out of the earth where it has been hibernating all winter immediately it begins the search for deserted nest back and forth flies the bee searching looking occasionally landing to examine the ground more closely eventually the bee finds a nesting site one day in mid-may we caught a queen bee coming out of an old deserted ground squirrel burrow after capturing the queen we dug up the tunnel at the end of the tunnel we found the old ground squirrel nest which had now become the nest of a bumble bee we took the nest indoors and placed it in a cigar box a piece of glass under the cover allows us to look inside the bamboo tube leads through the window screen to the outdoors permitting the queen to go out and find food now we can watch the queen at home the big yellow lumps under her feet are cocoons they are the result of the first group of eggs laid in early may on the right and left hand side you can see the clusters of brown wax cells which contain the young bees in the grub stage on the left you can see the honey pot where the queen keeps the supply of honey for a rainy day it must be raining today on cold days the queen takes a position like a setting hen brooding the hive and keeping it warm on bright sunny days the queen gathers nectar and pollen from the dandelions nectar is stored in the honey pot then the queen walks to the rear corner where she scrapes the pollen from her back legs by this time those of you with sharp eyes have noticed something see the little brown mites crawling on the rim of the honeypot and on the queen they are harmless parasites found in the nest of almost every bumblebee one day in late may the first new little bee appeared the first workers are only half the size of the mother queen nevertheless the tiny bee immediately begins to work in the nest just mother's little helper within a few days other workers appear busily the workers visit late spring flowers gathering nectar and pollen with abundant food the hive prospers the second brood has changed to cocoons each day new workers emerge from cocoons each day new strength is added to the hive and then one day tragedy struck the queen went out and she failed to return now a nest without a queen is a nest without a future for it is only the queen that can lay fertile eggs finally we decided upon desperate measures we captured a queen of the same species and placed her in the cigar box nest a plug of cotton prevents the queen from escaping the workers however must go in and out for food each time a worker comes along we let him in then quickly replace the plug so that the queen cannot escape a watch is kept inside too each time a worker starts down the tube a signal is given the plug is removed then quickly replaced so the queen cannot escape finally we replace the cotton with a small wooden plug which reduces the size of the entrance so that only the small workers can get through and the larger queen cannot escape and that is the way we kidnapped a queen and save the nest the new queen quickly adopts the nest as her own summer brings an abundance of flowers like the bergamot and the bumblebees are busy gathering food only insects with long tongues can reach into the deep flowers of the bergamot to tap the supplies of nectar the bumblebee has the longest tongue of all bees a tongue that slides up into the mouth and folds under the chin the long tongue of the bumblebee can easily reach into the deep throats of the red clover blossom the honey bee with a shorter tongue tries hard to reach the nectar but succeeds only with the shorter blossoms and eventually gives up the red clover depends upon the bumble bee for its future existence the bumblebee travels from flower to flower pollinating the blossoms and helping to set the seed it is difficult to produce red clover seed without the bumble bee the farmers of new zealand made that discovery years ago they were able to raise wonderful crops of red clover but they couldn't produce the seed then someone realized that the bumble bees were missing only after bumble bees were imported to new zealand was it possible to raise red clover seed in that country with increased supplies of food new storage places have to be found and the workers are busy cleaning out empty cocoons a rim of wax around the edge reinforces the cocoon each worker in turn unloads its supply of nectar by compressing the abdomen and squeezing the stomach dry now watch the lumps of pollen fall as this worker prize them from the basket of hairs on the back legs this pollen will be used as a future supply of food the search for food continues throughout the summer bumblebees are large enough and strong enough to walk over the milkweed blossoms without danger of being trapped by the clusters of pollen that cling to the legs of visiting insects the smaller honeybee is often trapped by these pollen appendages and has difficulty in getting away the bumble bee is also strong enough to force its way into the bottle gention these flowers never open and require the services of the bumblebee for pollination on the left the queen is making wax with glands on the upper and lower sides of her abdomen the thin transparent scales of wax are worked into a brown lump and finally shaped into an egg cup then the queen inserts the end of her abdomen into the cup and there she lays an egg as soon as the egg is laid she covers the cup with wax now we remove the top and see the glistening white egg inside promptly the queen moves in and covers the exposed egg the egg must be concealed otherwise a worker might come along reach in take out the egg and deliberately smash it the queen has to hide her egg from her own jealous workers eggs hatch in three to four days the young bee is a helpless grub it has no eyes and no legs under the constant care of the workers the young grub grows rapidly on the seventh day the grub spins a cocoon under the wax twelve days later the mature bee begins to cut its way out of the cocoon the entire top is cut away and then the young bee emerges at first it is white in color but it will turn to the characteristic yellow of the bumblebee in about two days by august new young queens can be seen visiting late summer flowers in late august and early september the new young queens begin to search for a place to hibernate each queen slips under the grass and then digs several inches down into the sod winter is still several months away but the queen believes in hibernating well in advance it is late in the year and the new queens are safely tucked away in hibernation the old queen is dead suddenly the workers become idle and the nest once thriving begins to fall apart in the far south where flowers bloom all winter and food is available the bumblebee nest sometimes survives the entire winter but in the north every nest is doomed when winter arrives only the new young queens survive the winter safely tucked away in the frozen earth holding on to a tiny spark of life despite the snows and ice above and when the warm sun of april thaws the earth the sleeping queen awakens and begins to fight her way upward struggling through the soft earth until she reaches the surface and sunlight once free of the earth she cleans herself carefully soon she will start the long journey in search of a new nest to begin a new generation [Music] um so that's how it really works um uh you know i have to admit i really appreciate that um we had when we had our guest uh irene moon on and she talked about how uh bees in the united states don't always make hives and don't always make honey it was ones that were introduced to the united states that make honey and have hives we have other types of bees that are some of them are even solitary they don't even um have like a social structure uh so it's kind of interesting to see this all right so i have something set up on the telecini behind me this is the machine i use to transfer films to video um and this one is see what is it oh yeah this is from the roanoke valley united fund and this is pledges for people enjoy [Music] so [Music] none of us is immune to disaster [Music] when it strikes there is often no time to hope for help it has to be there when you need it after our payday for our own enjoyment [Music] [Applause] [Music] so we like to know what happened to last year's pledge where did the money go yes where did the money go well it went to help people people like this and this [Music] [Music] [Music] and this people thousands of them every year need the kind of help only your pledge can provide not sympathy not a handout but expert help which means a youthful meaningful life for so many each year [Music] this little boy for instance now let's talk about you for just a minute can you tell me where you go to kindergarten you surely do at the first methodist and let's look at this picture of somebody i have who does that look like my baby sir your baby sister and what's her name and elizabeth g that was a good buddy b sound therapy to help him talk as you and i talk might be a dream were it not for your pledge and these men but for your pledge they might be entirely dependent on others now they earn their own living at goodwill industries and goodwill is training them to qualify for employment in private industry [Music] that's the united way helping people help themselves your pledge is hard at work too at greenville nursery known widely for its excellent daycare program for children of parents who must work [Music] and here at family service where expert counseling helps families stay together [Music] stay together by solving their problems together and when our senior citizens need help the dignity and hope for the future that comes through care and companionship of dedicated people your pledge is on the job at the mary louise home and mercy house [Music] life-saving crews have won the race against death countless times because you pledge to keep them on the job volunteers serving every part of the roanoke valley 24 hours a day all year long [Music] and how many more lives have you saved through the red cross blood program which you support with your pledge no one keeps count but who among us would not do everything in his power to save just one human life and our children who among us would not do everything in his power to make sure those childhood years are happy years of constructive activity that during this brief span dedicated adult leadership will help prepare today's children for tomorrow's ever more complicated world [Music] so [Music] [Music] these are children but they are learning here at the jerome that school many of them will go to regular schools become responsible adults with steady jobs because your pledge makes this training possible and just like other boys and girls they have their scout troops too this baby will never know her real parents but she'll grow up in a good home with parents who love her as much as parents can love a child you gave her and her parents a new and better way of life yes your pledge has come a long way in one short year helping the young the old the sick crippled and handicapped helping more than 80 000 people in the roanoke valley providing useful vital services for everyone will you pledge just two minutes pay a day to help these people that's all it takes to give your fair share one hour's pay a month makes all of these services and many more available for another year [Music] of all the appeals made to you none ask so little with which to do so much as your united fund what do you say thank you thank you for letting me over helping me good thank you for helping me good [Music] okay so some of that terminology for uh people in the film is no longer um appropriate they've moved on to other terms but this was of that time um and those were the actual technical terms but uh this is a fascinating thing so the united fund is very similar to what is now united way also something called the community chest the blue feather organization all these were community community-based uh funds that were set up to help support the um you know the house for the the developmentally disabled kids or for the blind kids or for people who basically had no support system uh the orphanage these were funds that were set up to help um help these these folks that were basically didn't have any help um and yeah so it became more formalized and most of these roll into united way um but there's some other ones as well um some of them are related to churches and uh things like that but um yeah it's kind of interesting and these have been around for quite a while early 20th century at least maybe some of them even predate that beautiful color holy cow pretty amazing and so obviously this film was shown to people in different work situations to get them to try to put a little bit of their paycheck towards this fund um uh let's watch a film about television brought to us by rca back before television was really a popular thing [Music] after 10 years of experiment television first shown to the public at the world's fair now takes its place as a new american art and industry with the inauguration of regular television broadcast from nbc one of the rca services said owners in metropolitan new york enjoy the novel experience of receiving pictures through the air but an examination of the set contributes little to an understanding of the subject except for the screen and slanted mirror that reflects the image to the audience it is much like a radio in appearance in the rca victor laboratories where television equipment has been developed we get a better view of the tubes that have added two new words to our vocabularies the iconoscope for the camera and the kinescope for the receiver the iconoscope is mounted behind the lens in this crude laboratory camera the lens focuses the image of the experimental chart upon a metal plate in the tubes and the iconoscope turns the image into electricity [Music] in a nearby laboratory receiver the kinescope tube is inserted this tube receives the electrical impulses created in the iconoscope tube and recreates the image as the tube is turned on we see the pattern of the scanning beam of electrons that moves back and forth across its face over 13 000 times a second and carries the electrical impulses that create the picture in the laboratory the econoscope and kinescope are connected by wire but in actual broadcast the nbc television transmitter atop the empire state building sends the program out from this antenna by imposing it on a very short radio wave which acts as a carrier for both a picture and sound these short radio waves travel only in a straight line and cannot follow the earth's surface therefore the limit of television is the distance from the antenna to the horizon from the empire state building a program can be sent only as far as the eye can see on a perfectly clear day in new york programs are sent to the transmitter over a special cable from the television studios in radio city three quarters of a mile away or are sent by radio to the transmitter by the mobile units which cover sporting events outdoor celebrations and spot news of all kinds a mobile television unit consists of two large trucks one of these is a rolling control room and amplifier and the other is a small radio transmitter which sends the program over the air to the main transmitter in the empire state building typical of programs covered by the mobile television units is a horse race and this unit pulls into the racetrack early in the morning to start the elaborate preparations of setting up to cover the race [Music] in the rear of one truck are reels of the special coaxial cable that carries the picture from the camera to the trucks while this is dragged out engineers raise the antenna on top of the truck from which the program will be broadcast and the cameramen set up the portable iconoscope camera atop the grandstand inside the truck the equipment is tested and the coaxial cable is raised to the roof of the stand to connect camera and trucks with a connection made the camera is turned on for a test and engineers stand by as race time approaches then on top of the stand announcer clem mccarthy takes his place beside the television camera and the program goes on the air judge hasten on the extreme outside keeps stepping out of his stall delaying the start as the 12 thoroughbreds line up at the gate now they're all in there and behaving nicely look how they're off interpreter number two breaks in front and as the field races past the stands his interpreter on top with some cracks in second place the field is closely bunched as they rush to the first turn but they have a long way to go it's still anybody's race down the back stretch some cracks is dropping back and as they turn into the home stretch albert d leads by two links with mundu at second ahead of a closely bunch field down the stretch albert d turns on more speed increases his lead he's too fast for mondewitt and albert d by four lengths is the winner in radio many television programs will come from the specially equipped studios such as this one in radio city here under the bright lights required for indoor broadcasts preparations are underway to televise an orchestral program the special lights of the television studios are placed under the direction of the cameraman most of these lights are suspended from the ceiling and controlled by cords by means of which they can be raised lowered or turned by a technician on the floor below in the control booth above the studio the program director and engineers prepare for their part in the broadcast here the picture and sound are amplified for their trip to the transmitter and the quality is checked on a viewing screen cameramen and engineers wear earphones through which they receive instructions throughout the broadcast from the director as the first step in the program the title camera is trained on the printed titles and these are sent out over the air then at a signal from the director the television broadcast gets underway [Music] each of the cameras used in this broadcast is making a different angle of the same scene this long shot camera is permanently placed to get a view of the entire orchestra a second camera on a wheel truck is used to make close-ups of the orchestra and its individual members and this is rolled around the studio during the broadcast on the screen in the control room we see a scene made by the close-up camera after this is run for a few seconds the control engineer switches over to the other camera and the scene changes to a long shot of the entire orchestra the director manipulates the cameras to keep the scene changing and to avoid monotony instructing the cameraman and engineers by telephone as the program progresses [Music] all right switch to one [Music] now roll into a close-up of the string section [Music] now pan across the orchestra from the brass to the strings [Music] back to your original position and pan over to include the conductor and so a new american industry has been born television is taking its place as another important and vital contribution to our daily lives it is a modern miracle a new public service produced by combining rca laboratory science with manufacturing skill the research problem of yesterday is the radio marvel of today another milestone of progress has been passed and science has made a reality of the age-old dream of pictures from the sky awesome uh very similar to that other film uh stepping was it stepping up to television or stepping into television sorry tomato sauce i'm my face um i mean it is the 80 geeks lunch after all change the title of uh and this is uh the church and military services and this is brought to us by the fine folks at brigham young university so enjoy throughout the world go into military service they need the comforting influence of the leadership of the church and the programs of the church in order to meet this need and to ensure their success in this most momentous time of their life we found it necessary under the direction of the military relations committee to bring to them in a more intimate way the programs of the church it is now our privilege to present such a program to these young men as we go to them in the field [Music] hold on [Music] oh [Music] [Music] our young men who are now going into military service are leaving the intimacy of their family circle where they've been surrounded by father and mother and brothers and sisters where they have been taught the gospel standards they're now going out into the world where worldly standards will predominate they have no option as to whether they shall go they have to go and we must let them go we've declared in the 12th article of faith we believe in being subject to kings presidents rulers and magistrates in obeying honoring and sustaining the law our program for military relations is designed to serve members in every country in the world this program will help our members to be good citizens of the church while in the military and give the most of the opportunities for church service and priesthood advancement that they would receive at home it calls for no new church positions but is administered by the regular local priesthood officers it is a permanent plan and yet it is flexible enough to serve every branch of the service this program will not be affected by changes in governmental recruiting procedures and will be able to adjust to total military call up or to minimum military requirements it also serves those who have made the military their career as well as veterans who are adjusting to civilian life here are some important phases of the correlated military relations program pre-service church orientation for the young man about to enter the service in-service orientation for the young man on active duty more comprehensive than the pre-service orientation on leave for the service man about to go on leave or rest in recuperation in hospital designed to locate and keep in contact with those who are hospitalized having responsibility in the military relations program are first the serviceman himself [Music] his parents the home teachers the quorum leader the servicemen's group leader the latter day saint chaplin the ward executive secretary the bishop the stake executive secretary the stake president the mission president and the regional representative of the twelve the primary responsibility falls on the service man first after deciding which branch of the service to enter it is his duty to attend the pre-service church orientation prior to entering military service responsibility to set an example wherever i am so that people can see that my religion means something to me the serviceman should subscribe to church publications and pay for them himself he should inform his home ward bishop or branch president of his current military address also it's up to him to locate the nearest church unit wherever he's assigned rather than the church having to find him the parents of the servicemen also have responsibilities they should have notified the home teachers of his impending military call and should provide subscriptions to church publications if he hasn't already subscribed parents will of course want to encourage their son through correspondence to stay active in the church while in the service of his country teachers have a vital obligation how are you doing good to see you good to see you you're getting your last licks here before they put you in uniform right yeah they've got me out here going at it how are you chuck pretty good thank you well dick i want to talk to you make sure that you understood what the church has to offer they should be acquainted with the young men of military age in their home teaching district and keep the quorum leader advised of their plan dick he's received his draft call oh well uh i'll notify the bishop then and uh he can set an interview with dick before he goes good i talked to him about the pre-service church orientation program you ought to be invited to attend the next session fine i'll remind the bishop uh would you check to be sure that he receives the church news in the improvement era oh yes they should also correspond with those on active duty the ward priesthood executive secretary keeps up to date on all military relations matters and advises the bishop as the key man in the home teaching program he keeps abreast of who the prospective servicemen are and posts current addresses of servicemen in the chapel foyer he also advises the bishop concerning correspondence with men on active duty the bishop should guide the aaronic priesthood program in such a way that it will help the young man be spiritually prepared for military service he should interview each prospective service man he invites the young man to pre-service church orientation supplies him with the service man's kit and other literature and arranges for him to speak at a sacrament service the young man entering military service should be treated much as a departing missionary and none should leave without having the opportunity to speak in his ward or branch appreciated what's been said in our priesthood the bishop is also responsible for servicemen assigned to military units within his ward area he should help prepare the young men for priesthood advancement as he would any young man in his ward and give them the opportunity for church service the stake priesthood executive secretary advises the stake presidency on all church programs for men entering the military and those stationed within stake boundaries on assignment he may train ward priesthood executive secretaries on military relations matters looks like a fine publication outlines the whole program the stake president is responsible for the entire military relations program in his stake he calls sets apart and directs the leadership in the church organizations at military installations within his stake area we presently have a number of chaplains on active duty who are members of the church if a chaplain is stationed within a stake it is suggested that he be called as a high counsellor or alternate high councilor in a mission area the chaplain may serve as a military adviser to the mission president my position as a chaplain in the united states navy here is to be a liaison between the church and the military and i'm helping the stake president the bishop do those things that they need to do to help our brother remain active in the church the regional representatives of the twelve are responsible for the military relations program in their regions and should encourage the stakes in all phases of the work by now each of you should have completed your surveys of the young men who will be going into the regional representatives are responsible for scheduling and organizing the pre-service church orientation for men about to enter the military service these orientation meetings should be held as often as necessary to ensure that every boy who is planning to go into the military has an opportunity to attend why the brethren have had this pre-service orientation meeting is to help you anticipate and to operate more effectively in the service they have a great deal of confidence in you elder gordon hinckley of the council of the twelve has prepared a tape this tape expresses that confidence in you and i'd like you to listen to this tape now [Music] we do not have better latter-day saints in all the world than we have in military service we do not have men of greater faith anywhere on earth than we have in uniform thousands and tens of thousands of our brethren have demonstrated that they could keep the faith and build the kingdom while serving their country now concerning the matter of teaching the gospel to others i should like to say that i think it is as natural for a latter-day saint to wish to share the gospel with his associates as it is for him to wish for food and drink of course there are restrictions on what you can do you cannot go tracting you cannot hold street meetings but you can do a few things in a quiet and effective way that will attract others to the gospel which is such a precious part of your lives in the united states men entering the military services are all processed through one of about 20 military basic training centers during basic training the lds serviceman is given a more comprehensive church orientation [Music] brother and tonight we're here working in the military services in service orientation program put out by the military relations committee [Music] called the in-service church orientation for servicemen now during this period of time for the next few weeks we're going to be discussing these topics first of all that of serving god and country next we will be discussing moments of challenge third will be discussing living your religion fourth sharing the gospel and the fifth topic is that of investing your leisure time [Applause] another phase of the program is designed for men going on leave hi joel let it go today no sweat no contact that's great all i see in church sunday no my r r has been okayed and i'll be spending the next six days in hawaii hey wow once come over to my hat and i'll hear some material on the church activities there sure why not let's go the latter day saints servicemen in combat who go to hawaii australia singapore or hong kong on rest leave as well as other lds servicemen going on leave are instructed on how to find the church in the areas to which they're going where to stay and what to do this was my first visit to hawaii i was looking for a real good time but i soon found that sightseeing alone was no fun and sometimes the temptations are pretty strong i remembered the material my group leader had given me and found the nearest church it's great to find a welcome hand wherever you go to a church meeting [Music] here the bishop introduced me to another marine on r and r we got together and found we had the same interests [Music] we toured the island together and had a great time [Music] servicemen coming back to their home wards on leave should be welcomed and recognized in church meetings if possible brethren being in the service has really been a test we latter-day saints come to a crossroads there we either draw closer to the church or go down a road that leads to degrading our body and our spirit servicemen no matter where they're located will have close contact with an organized unit of the church in most cases servicemen can attend wards or branches adjacent to their military bases on ships and at some installations this is impossible in such cases a group leader is called from among the servicemen on the ship or installation and set apart by the priesthood leaders presiding over that area the group leader will then conduct meetings and coordinate the group home teaching program and supervise recordkeeping here aboard the saint paul i've been set apart by chaplain servicemen's groups and branches will be administered through the stake or mission within whose boundaries they are located they will be a regular unit of the stake or mission when we're in port we expect you to go to your home wards and the branch in coronado the next phase of the military relations program provides for wounded and sick servicemen in military hospitals to be visited and kept track of by the local priesthood authorities we have the council well we're pleased to have found you i'm glad you came how long have you been here three weeks three weeks i think i'm gonna be here in a while longer your parents know that you're here oh yes i call them the night i come in good i'm glad you did that is there anything that we can do for you well send some visitors in once in a while to see us excellent we'll send in some home teachers for you how's that that sounds real good and they'll be visiting you shortly sounds better yes the local wards have opened their arms to the servicemen made this feel very much at home and very comfortable very much a part of their ward for a person with a good testimony who is righteous in his his dealings with his fellow sailors it's a it's a wonderful opportunity to to set a good example most of the time i was in the field and she always say here you communicate with the lord by prayer prayer one of the greatest things that i've ever experienced in vietnam we'd go on our patrols our daily patrol would start out with uh please lord keep us safe today let us all come home safely then as the odds got bigger the prayer would change to please lord if we get hit let it be a small hit but the prayers were always there i had an opportunity in the in basic training to talk to the men of my barracks about the gospel and even to show them the positive effects of living the word of wisdom because i lasted a lot longer than they did on the runs in basic training i feel like my experience with church was good because i was able to be a missionary a lot of the people are interested in my particular basic training group to see why i believed as i did and i came to church with me it was a great missionary experience for me in the service club i found a notice that said lds church sunday services at one o'clock m.i.a tuesday to six o'clock it was tuesday so i went to m.i.a our mia consisted of two warrant officers and three pfcs like myself but one of the greatest m.i.a i've ever been to they're very very exceptional bunch of fellows there coming out to church although some of them have problems some of them are drinking and smoking still they're coming out to church they want to improve themselves and by coming out to church they can find the help they really need i can truly say that my service experience has been one of the most challenging and most enjoyable experiences which i have had in the church after this time i was in the mission presidency in vietnam and we had the pleasure of baptizing six brothers in the south china sea when i was wounded i was able to call upon them within 25 minutes after i sent for them i had two elders a priest there to administer to me the church was great it was definitely one of the greatest assets to me in vietnam a year ago i was converted and baptized while in the marine corps and i found this to be the most wonderful experience in all of my life the church also meant being different so i was the only active lds fellow in our company i had the opportunity also the responsibility of setting an example to them it meant that i didn't drink that now let us review these various phases of the church military relations program the pre-service orientation meeting which every prospective service man should attend next the in-service orientation which takes place at basic training bases in the united states during the regular time allotted for religious services the next phase is designed for men going on leave then there's the important need to keep track of and in touch with every hospitalized latter-day saint serviceman and veteran [Music] let us listen to elder mark e peterson member of the council of the twelve brethren we are deeply concerned about the welfare of our young men in the military service each one of us needs the comforting influence of the gospel and the strength of our leaders but our servicemen particularly require this help we who are here at home must fill this need it cannot be done by wishful thinking or by silent sympathy even prayers alone are not enough after all faith without works is dead we must combine our earnest efforts with our faith and prayers to carry out the program we have in mind and may the lord be with you as you undertake this work [Music] in may 1969 the first presidency said we believe that our young men should hold themselves in readiness to respond to the call of their government to serve in the armed forces [Music] [Music] so um yeah this is a the church's position on all of our young people being drafted uh and what we can do and what we should do um and uh you know that's the thing is uh the mormon um the church of latter-day saints is actively maintains contact with their membership all the time constantly constantly i had a friend whose family was mormon uh and he was no longer mormon but they kept checking in with him every month and he was like all right what do i need to do to get out of that and they're like well we could send you a letter um you know from the bishop that basically says you are no longer part of the church but you don't want that my friend was like yes i do so he got a letter that basically said you're out um and you know we're not responsible for you so it's like you're fired a termination letter from the mormon jesus um so it's it's fascinating i mean that's that's the thing is that they keep in touch with you and some people need that and like that and want that they want to be able to feel like they're a member of an organization that reaches out to them i'm not pro or anti-mormon on this streaming show but um that's kind of their deal um but anyways i love films like this because it's meant for a very niche audience it's for a very niche time back when uh uh young men were being drafted and so like what do we do how do we keep these people in a church and do we can we use them normally they're on a mission so can we use them to also you know help spread the word of mormonism um so fascinating uh thanks for tuning in today um i am not mormon so you can buy me some coffee uh and it's gonna be caffeinated and it's gonna be great um i don't smoke but uh there are many things that i do in my life that um mormon church would not like um i had a mormon roommate at one point who uh he went on a mission and um he actually found i was a big fan of dr pepper and he found me some caffeine-free diet dr pepper in utah i was like what's the point it just doesn't have caffeine in it so anyways we like caffeine at any geeks um you can like and subscribe and of course you can go to
