do so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so there he is sorry about that the uh i was in another room and it went off so the alarm i'm skipped alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show we've been uh watching wizardry of the wireless which is a was an early ge film about the wonders of radio technology and uh i love it man i really love it it's you know it's before radio really took off it was trying to explain it to the common common man um and probably to get investors uh and you know i love a technology that or love films that talk about a technology that hasn't taken hold yet so it's really a wonderful film to watch um we are going to rock it ahead i believe to the late 70s early 80s with this next film um i thought i had shown all my lunchroom manners films but this one had somehow escaped so this is lunchroom etiquette enjoy [Music] thank you chasey what's for lunch a surprise today can i look uh-uh be careful honey bye mom hi hi this film is about me this film is about me too this film's about me too and me [Music] and this film is about you too [Music] good habits stay with us all our lives we learn them at home from our friends and in school good habits in the classroom make our studies easier and help us in learning the things we need to know and such good habits as cleanliness and consideration for others will make another part of our day more enjoyable for all and that's lunch time i'm hungry i didn't eat breakfast i wish i hadn't been in such a hurry this morning i wish lunch time were here gotta talk to janet [Music] i can't wait to see what mom took my lunch today isn't it time for lunch yet do you think so i still see a minute left on the clock you must be hungry please pick up your materials and let's get cleaned up for lunch in school my favorite time of day is lunch time because i can be with my friends even if they're in the other class gee robert you have as much paint on your hands as you do on your picture yeah i'll be done in a minute i'm glad i got this paid off my hands it wouldn't go with my lunch did you bring your lunch today yeah i brought part of my birthday cake want some oh sure during lunch time if i'm clean i'm more comfortable you should always wash your hands before you eat [Music] [Music] loud noise in the cafeteria is unpleasant and unnecessary [Music] i don't like loud noise during this time because it's harder to um to eat and talk quietly to your friends there's two noise in here i can't hear you robert save a place for me grab some experience for saturday okay john helped keep the noise down by not shouting across the room i hope she put in some chocolate chip cookies ah she remembers pushing and shoving doesn't help anyone makes you kind of uncomfortable when you see somebody fighting when you're trying to have a good time and they're over there fighting boys come on [Applause] kid never learns he's at the end of the line almost every day if somebody gets caught fighting they're usually sent to the end of the line i think it's real when people um push push instead to get to the front of the line they're just greedy and that they can't wait to get their turn in line what a dumb thing to do i'm sorry see it serves you right i spilled food on me i would really be embarrassed lunchtime is when i get to be with my friends we pick the table farthest away because it's quieter [Music] dumb i should use both the hands thing that ever happened to me in lunchtime was when i tripped over someone's feet and my lungs spilled and everyone laughed at me [Music] no not like you come on i think the people who own the utensils and things at school are um are the school and your parents because they helped pay for the things school property belongs to you and your parents and to all of us why damage it and taking school property is just like stealing from your own family i might see someone brought a lot of food that he didn't eat some of your mom and dad money just going down for paying all your pain for that food straight to my cake for your cookies no way they're my favorite oh boy giggles are soccer games accidents are caused by carelessness can we go now when you finish cleaning up you can go instead of a noontime soccer game it's clean up time for kip and carl [Music] [Music] george [Music] boy is he gonna get it do you think lunchtime is an important time of the day did you remember to wash up were you polite were you careful did you sit quietly with one of your friends were you courteous to others did you take too much food [Music] how can you help accidents from happening what bothers you most during lunch time what bothers me most about lunchtime is when people um get messy and they don't care about what other people think people are being real loud people shoving and pushing to get in line what bothers me most about lunch time is is when everybody's talking and yelling and screaming and shooting straws at you and you can't even talk to each person sitting next to you what suggestions would you have for making lunchtime better for all of us i think lunchtime would be better for all of us if people would control their temper lunch more enjoyable for people because if people would not be so loud people should be more thoughtful what does lunchtime mean to you lunchtime means for me having a good time and eating relaxing talking to some of your friends that you can't talk to in class much time means to me is when i can go and eat and have a good lunch and visit with my friends it's an important time to really talk to your friends and get all the talking out lunchtime means to me like to eat and have a good time but not to get loud and throw food or not you know not get mad at your friends good habits should stay with us all our lives good habits used in the lunchroom help us enjoy our food and our friends [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] um so you know i have a bunch of films about lunchroom manners and etiquette and i did a show um at a middle school in austin texas along with the alamo drafthouse and we showed these films uh in an actual cafeteria we had lunch ladies we had uh lunch trays with tater tots and i can't remember what the protein was it was maybe chicken fingers or something was all fried um and so we showed a bunch of these films and it was it was an interesting mix it was little kids it was uh parents uh and it was uh austin hipsters that kind of all came together um and uh it was really fun and the principal said you know basically we still need to show these films because this is still a problem and um made me feel good uh one of the ideas that the tim league the founder of the alamo and i ever thought about is like maybe we could do a lice check beforehand you know kind of get the hipsters in that that feeling of like what it was like to be back in elementary school but we were told that uh no there actually was a lie scare uh recently at that school and that would not be would not go over well so there you go um this film uh like many films uh made in the day is uh is infuriating to women so here's the kitchen is a feminine thing enjoy [Music] george is such a dear he's a research engineer you know how they are always up to the eyeballs in mathematics and things like that he grew up thinking that women can't really do things he likes feminine women and i guess he thought a really feminine gal couldn't do a practical job of homemaking but he's learning lucky for me they've developed so many lovely new feminine ideas in kitchen styling classic sculpted sheer look styling of refrigerators is a definite compliment to a woman and here's a kitchen planning idea i like a refrigeration center food freezer and refrigerator facing each other within arm's reach of course i don't let george know how easy homemaking has become with modern equipment defrosting used to be a messy routine but no more freezer and refrigerator are bowl frost proof the idea of placing the children's playroom adjacent to the kitchen is a happy example of thoughtful efficient planning the table folds up out of the way when you want space and comes down for meals or when the little ones want to play games or watch tv when you put the laundry equipment in there and you have a perfect place to keep an eye on the children while you get things done [Music] george loves convenience like all men with things like getting ice cubes for instance somebody had a wonderful idea about an ice ejector quick flip and your cubes drop into the handy server thanks to home freezers there's no such thing as leftovers to bore the family two or three times in a row now it's plan overs or like large pieces of roast that you can bring out and slice up next week or next month casserole is always a sure fire hit freeze the food in a foil line casserole then remove and package in a freezer wrap for storing that way you don't tie up dishes in the freezer [Applause] real homemade soup is a treat rarely served because it takes so long to make but with a freezer you can make a large quantity when you have the time and then freeze the extra in individual or family servings when you're preparing spaghetti sauce it's just as easy to make a double recipe freeze the extra and save it for an italian treat when you have a food freezer you get some unusual requests for storage the top layer of my kid's sister's wedding cake waiting to be eaten on a special occasion her first anniversary a food freezer opens a whole new world of wonderful treats for children it's like a magic box of wonderland a comical mickey mouse can be in storage it's a ball of ice cream with chocolate cookie ears and here's another freezer treat a dainty little angel a cone of ice cream with a marshmallow head and foil wings and halo they can be prepared well in advance of need and you spare yourself the hustle and bustle when the party is actually going on a gumdrop bouquet will be old and odd at any small fry party all you need is ice cream cup cones cookie crumbs and gumdrops and of course a frost proof freezer yes our kitchen is a feminine thing and more than ever the center of family life with the things we have available today it's the place a man looks forward to at the end of a hard day's work the new feminine ideas in kitchens the new things to use the new things to do make it a place of enduring pleasure and adventure [Music] um yeah thanks frigidaire uh trying to identify with women but also uh demean them and i don't know it's a it's problematic uh let's sing a song about picnics i got a film uh set up here i think i could be wrong i think this film is uh the song is written by jim burrows who wrote uncle smiley's and a bunch of other great songs and films so let's see if this is a good candidate for the toe tapping tournament which we will probably start next year sometime in the spring um so here it is picnic enjoy [Music] so [Music] so [Applause] [Music] won't you come with us today we're going on a picnic won't you come with us [Music] [Music] a picnic on a sunny day green grass grows upon the ground where we have our picnic we like to play upon the grass where we have our picnic it's nice to kneel upon the grass to smell and touch and feel the grasp grass is green and green is the color green is the color of the trees green is the color of summer leaves while mom and dad prepare the food we look for things to find the woods are filled with animals and many things to find caterpillars bugs and bees living in the forest perhaps find [Music] have our picnic a frog can easily be found where we have our picnic frogs are small green animals they live around the water turtles like to live here too with grass and trees and water turtles like the water the picnic punch is almost done the fire is burning brightly some foods cooked to crusty brown others we cook lightly fire cooks all our food you see without fire picnics could not be it cooks because it's very [Music] heart hot things that cold cannot fire is very very hot picnic lunch is ready now it's time to have our picnic eating food that's fun to eat it's time to have our picnic to eat can be a lot of fun especially on a hot dog drinking be a pleasure too drink is something that we do when we're thirsty through and through [Music] [Music] [Music] do [Music] so [Music] time to pack our picnic things and drive back to the city clean the table pick up trash keep the country pretty for other little boys and girls to come and have a picnic a picnic just as you and i and it's time to say goodbye and it's time to say goodbye goodbye yeah i um i think i called it i was uh i can't remember if i knew that already it's not in my notes um but um he did a lot of work for aci he also did work for uh learning corporation um and some other entities so he was like a singer-songwriter who did a bunch of things beyond of course the the guy who created uncle smiley which um an entire generation of kids who love or hate uncle smiley let's learn about the life story of an earthworm enjoy attached to this hook and line is one of the favorite foods of many fish attached to the other end of this fishing line is a boy he knows that the bait he is using is called a night crawler or fishing worm but he doesn't know much more about this animal and perhaps you don't either while we're waiting for a fish to bite let's see what we can learn about the night crawler or common earthworm earthworms are found all over the world wherever there is moist soil they cannot live in the dry sand of deserts the rocky surfaces of mountains or where the earth is permanently frozen six inches is the average length of a full-grown earthworm but another kind that lives only in south america and australia is a giant growing to a length of ten feet or more these are about three feet long earthworms belong to a group of animals called annelids annelids have bodies that are divided into segments the earthworm body has about 150 segments that are marked by rings or grooves these are the body parts of a typical segment each segment is much like nearly every other segment the earthworm does not have a backbone in the front end there is a small brain and a mouth food is carried through the body by wave-like muscular actions in the walls of the digestive tube red blood carries digested food to all parts of the worm indigestible material passes out of the body through the anal opening the earthworm moves by crawling special muscles lengthen and shorten the body in wave like motions while four pair of tiny hard bristles in each segment help it grip the ground and hold on to the side of the burrow the earthworm breathes air through pores in its skin these close when the skin becomes dry in order to live its skin must always remain moist notice how the earthworm stays on the wet paper towel and does not venture onto the dry soil beyond an earthworm will also die if exposed to too much light it therefore avoids light whenever possible earthworms keep their skins moist and avoid light by living in deep burrows underground the burrow is a kind of tunnel that the earthworm makes by forcing its way between particles of soft soil or by eating its way through hard soil earthworms move in their burrows the same way as they do above ground earthworms stay in their burrows during the day but in periods of heavy rain they come to the surface to avoid drowning in their flooded homes here many of them die from drying out and too much exposure to light earthworms are most active at night and can be filmed as we have done here under dim red light when darkness falls they come partly out of their burrows in search for food their food consists of bits of vegetation animal matter and soil if danger threatens the worm can pull quickly into its burrow an earthworm has both male and female organs mating occurs at night during mating each worm forms a mucous tube around part of its body this is secreted by the smooth band around the worm then the pair of worms exchange sperms the sperms leave the male sex openings in each worm and travel to storage sacks of the opposite worm after mating the worms separate and return to their burrows later each earthworm deposits its own eggs and the sperm received from its mating partner into its mucus tube where fertilization occurs then the tube slides from the earthworm's body and shrinks to form a cocoon the cocoon is about the size of an apple seed this is how it looks in nature small worms will emerge from the cocoon in about two weeks here are some young worms and an adult earthworms have many relatives one of these is the leech leeches live in water and in moist tropical places on land there is a sucker at each end of its body suckers enable the leach to attach itself to other animals from which it sucks blood one of the best known ocean dwelling relatives of the earthworm is the sandworm nerius gills through which it breathes extend from the sides of its many segments this is the first special structure for breathing in the animal kingdom this marine relative the tube worm takes its name from the tube in which it lives here we have cut away one side of the tube so you can see the animal inside some of the worm segments resemble fans their waving motion produces a current of water that carries food into the tube this flower worm is another marine relative of the earthworm flower worms pop out of their tubes to capture tiny food particles in the water they pop into their tubes at the approach of an enemy the earthworm is the only analyte of great economic importance to man in each acre of this farmland there may be as many as fifty thousand earthworms they are constantly loosening hard soil by eating their way through it opening the soil to air and water necessary for the growth of plants the earth eaten by earthworms is deposited in small mounds called castings around the openings of their burrows the castings a form of manure help to fertilize the soil earthworms are an important source of food for other animals birds feed on earthworms and so do toads and frogs snakes eat many earthworms and look what we have caught using an earthworm as food for a hungry fish now that you have seen the life story of the earthworm can you answer these questions why is the burrow in the ground a safe place for earthworms to live how do earthworms move what is the principal characteristic of the annelid body why do earthworms usually come out only at night how do earthworms reproduce how are earthworms beneficial to man i like to have the questions at the end um it saves having to actually read the uh teacher's guide um which often accompanies a film and i don't know i don't have that film handy to see if it actually came with the teacher's guide some films do some of them are in the can some of them are little little booklets and some of them a library a school library would take them out and put them in a folder so that when you checked out the film then you would go look in the file cabinet for the appropriate um tears guide all right i got another film cued up as we go on more and more i will probably be showing more films live uh because i'm beginning to run out of films that i've already digitized and um i enjoy actually pulling these films um and showing stuff that i haven't digitized past so these are 21st century um premiers and you guys are there for it so thank you for joining us for that this one is liquids can burn enjoy [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] most of us know that gasoline can burn but there are many other liquids around our homes that are also very dangerous turpentine paint thinner and paints kerosene [Music] solvents cleaners cigarette lighter fluids [Music] many of these liquids look like water yet they can all burn or explode when the boys had the fire in the garage it may have looked like an accident but the only accidental part was when the boys spilled the gasoline all the rest was sure to follow why well let's take a look at some of the things that we should know about liquids that burn first of all they burn only when they start to evaporate turn into a gas it's actually the vapors the gas that burns the lowest temperature at which a liquid produces vapors that will burn is called the flash point this is when liquids become dangerous now the most dangerous of all liquids commonly found at home is gasoline [Music] almost every home has some gasoline for the lawn mower the mini bike or camping stove gasoline evaporates at minus 45 degrees which means it's evaporating even when the weather is way below freezing [Music] so it's almost always ready to burn or explode [Music] watch this demonstration and you'll see what i mean we'll place just two drops of gasoline in this tube now i'll put the cork in the top and shake it to vaporize the gasoline now the tube is filled with fumes the vapors watch what happens when i ignite the gasoline with a spark that was just two drops of gasoline you can imagine the force in an entire can so exactly what happened when the boys spill the gasoline in the garage [Music] the spilled gasoline is evaporating and although we can't see them the vapors are there now we already know that gasoline vapor is highly flammable because it has a very low flash point but there is something else about gasoline that helped make this a dangerous situation gasoline vapors are not only invisible they are also two and a half times heavier than air imagine them as water which we know always goes down and spreads out [Music] look we can prove that first i'll put this rag in this box and saturate it with gasoline now the vapors are now coming down the tube but being invisible we can't see them i'll turn on the spark gun if the vapors are coming down and they're heavier than air they should reach the spark now we understand what happened in the garage not all flammable liquids are as dangerous as gasoline for instance here's some ordinary paint thinner now when we put the spark gun up to the paint thinner see nothing happens why not because unlike gasoline paint thinner does not evaporate until it reaches 100 degrees and it's much cooler than that in here now here is a dish of paint thinner that i've been warming up its temperature has now reached 100 degrees let's put the spark gun to it now okay so different flammable liquids become dangerous at different temperatures what does this mean to you well suppose you're painting and it's a hot day [Music] [Music] sitting in the sun paint thinner could easily warm up to that dangerous 100 degrees and start to vaporize then [Music] all it takes is a spark or a flame and we have another accident [Music] as we've seen the different flammable liquids have different flash points and therefore become dangerous under different conditions there is one thing however they all have in common when we buy them they all carry labels that clearly state that the liquid inside could be dangerous for example look what this label says use with adequate ventilation that means to use with plenty of moving fresh air so that the vapors will be blown away the liquids that burn may be ignited not only by flame but also by heat or sparks from a grinding wheel or electric motor flammable or combustible is a fire warning reading the label is an excellent way to prevent an accident [Music] from what we know about flammable liquids what are the conditions here that could lead to a serious fire [Music] liquids can burn and she would have known if she had read the label so what should we do use non-flammable cleaning fluids if you should have to clean a large garment with solvent do it out of doors but best of all leave the cleaning to the cleaning shops now another situation you'll recognize [Music] [Music] family barbecues are fun but with the combination of a fire flammable liquid and some curiosity well [Music] fortunately there's an easy way to prevent such a dangerous situation use solid charcoal lighters and electric starters they're a lot safer unfortunately we do not have substitutes for all flammable liquids so it's important that we know how to use them and how to store them [Music] unfortunately the most commonly used gasoline can is made of thin metal they puncture easily and are frequently hard to close tightly you can imagine what could happen with a vapor leaking can of gasoline in a car trunk [Music] gasoline should be stored in heavy metal or heavy plastic containers [Music] this is a demonstration of what can happen with just a small amount of gasoline [Music] firemen wired this car with a sparking device they poured some gasoline on the interior of the car [Music] [Music] when they turned on the electric spark this happened [Music] what if that gasoline had ignited in your car or house [Music] so how do you prevent accidents with flammable liquids well here are some good rules to follow make sure that the containers are tightly sealed to prevent vapor from escaping be sure they're clearly labeled so you know what they contain keep them out of reach of small children just as you would other dangerous items such as drain cleaners bleaches medicine even aspirin take the time to explain to young people that the bright red gasoline can is very special it can hurt so never go near it flammable liquids are very helpful to us unfortunately the fire department all too frequently is called because somewhere someone has been careless with the liquid that burns will the next call be for you [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] i can check that gear in a minute so don't touch anything okay [Music] hey get down from there now [Music] what if it bumped that control by accident you'd be mince meat by now what have i told you you don't work on equipment when the engine's running well i told them not to touch anything all right i guess i wasn't thinking you weren't thinking you mean you'll work on engines and machinery and not think of your own personal safety here shake hands with danger shake hands with danger meet a man you ought to know i used to laugh at safety now they call me three finger joe [Music] i was young and feisty never did things by the book just let me get my tool box and i'll take myself i climbed up on a dozier with my mechanics pride said you can keep it running friend while i poke around inside shake hands with danger meet a guy now i used to laugh at safety now they call me three finger joe although i learned a lesson i forgot it soon enough the knicks and burns and scratches showed the young ones i was tough till another morning i was grinding on some steel my other hand got careless and fed my skin into the wheel shake hands with danger step right up and say hello grinding wheels and metal are what made me [Music] i've seen mechanics burning and i've seen them take a fall just to save themselves a minute i've seen them lose it all i've watched them caught in trouble seen them take a chance and lose they get careless for a moment and spend a lifetime with the blues [Music] [Applause] [Music] you [Music] [Music] walk around [Music] inside [Music] shake hands with danger and some friends i used to know compared to them i'm lucky to be just three finger joe [Laughter] so i could have gone either way with that um i could have shown books are for burning i could have shown the shake hands with danger it's kind of in i can't remember which one i showed last so um that one was handy um but man yeah that liquid can burn film is great and i have more fire safety films that i haven't shown yet so we have more opportunities to watch that stuff thank you for tuning in today if you like what you saw you can buy us some coffee by going to the buy me a coffee dot com slash av geeks um you can also go to avgeeks.com and see other shows that we've done in the past and also we have dvds for sale there as well and you can just tell the world that you like av geeks but just hitting the like
