show will do is give you a chance to not look at the headlines and to watch some 16 millimeter films from our collection um i'd like to welcome the black hole monoplex people uh that's a new addition that we started yesterday and we'll be broadcasting daily one o'clock eastern standard time to you guys to youtube to facebook and twitch so thanks everybody all the eyeballs out in the world for watching what we do um because you know collecting these films having over 30 000 films doesn't mean anything unless i can share them and put eyeballs on them so i got the films to share you got the eyeballs we're going to have a great partnership all right so that being said let's watch this fascinating film about taking tests [Music] dear betty my schoolwork is getting so high dear betty can you help me with my hair buddy how can i understand this dear betty why do i always fear betty my teacher doesn't take enough time with me dear betty dear betty i need your help dear betty i always seem to run out of time especially an essay test before i know it the time is up and my teacher says please stop writing and turn in your papers but i'm not finished it happens all the time why does that happen betty sincerely i don't know of odahi idaho dear ida it happens because you don't divide let me explain what i mean let's suppose you have five essay questions to answer and let's suppose you have 50 minutes for the test well first read over the test quickly if the questions seem about equally hard just divide fifty by five that means you have about ten minutes for each question if some questions seem harder than others allow a little extra time for the hard ones and a little less for the others if you keep an eye on the time as you work you'll finish all the questions good luck betty dear betty my answers to essay questions never seem to go where i want them to i wander all over the place [Music] i can't pin my ideas down and say just what i want to say how come betty regards just in case of roaming wyoming dear justin you need something to help you stick to the point let's suppose you have an essay question like this explain why the french and indian war made the colonists less dependent on england now we'll have to assume all the little bits of information about the war are there in your head the problem is to get to the main facts quickly and directly we'll jot down the important points on a piece of scratch paper organize them into a simple outline if you like but even a few words will help you stick to your point justin and go just where you want to go happy test scores betty dear betty as a teacher i feel it's my responsibility to impress my students with the importance of noticing cue words and essay questions but i can't do it as well as you can betty how about a little help sincerely mrs heckmeyer location withheld dear mrs heckmeyer glad to help students you're paying attention aren't you that's nice then remember this q words are keywords got it q words are keywords in answering essay questions if you look at essay questions you usually find certain important words words like list compare review well these words are cues to the sort of answers that are expected list asks for details specific facts compare asks for two sets of facts that show similarities or differences review wants all the information that fits into a big idea if you notice those q word students you'll keep right on the track best wishes betty dear betty i don't like studying how can i do all on tests without studying eagerly constantly confused dear constant you can't my regrets betty dear betty i have trouble with multiple choice tests i find it hard to pin down the one right answer [Music] is there some easy way to do that thank you you are mistaken of ill-prepared illinois dear hugh yes there is let's suppose you have a question like this which crop did the indians show the pilgrims how to plant tobacco corn wheat or cotton if you're not sure of the right answer then eliminate the answers you're sure are wrong the pilgrims main problem was food well tobacco's not a food they probably wouldn't want to grow that so tobacco's out cotton not in new england and it's not a food either that leaves you with just two food crops to choose from now assuming you're not a dummy you should remember that the settlers had raised wheat in europe the corn was new to them and that's what the indians helped the pilgrims with and i hope i've helped you some sincerely oh ps betty matching test they get sticky too is there an easy way to go with them yes there is hugh the trick is to work with just one column at a time start at the top of one and try to match it with a word or phrase in the other then draw your line then go back to that first column again and repeat the action that's the easiest way to do it just remember that some words or phrases might get connected more than once and some might not get connected at all i hope i've been of help betty dear betty what kind of tests do you think are the hardest may do well of ballpoint pennsylvania dear may true false really here's why take this sentence pluto is always farther from the sun than neptune well it's true that pluto is the farthest planet from the sun but always is the tricky word because in some parts of its orbit pluto is actually closer to the sun than neptune is so the statement is really false but you have to read the statement carefully to see that always can make statements that seem true actually false there are other words like that [Music] never first every i had to learn to read very carefully to avoid getting tricked that's why i think true false tests are the hardest sincerely betty dear betty my mother says she always used to cram for tests she doesn't understand why i spread studying out over several days am i wrong i need your help we'll be wrong of flunk florida dear will wrong you are not wrong you are right here's how i suggest you should prepare for a test before the test give yourself a careful review that's spread out over several days [Music] that's better for most students than cramming the night before a test don't eat foods that are too hard to digest [Music] and get a good night's rest [Music] then in class make sure you've brought the right materials to the test pencils erasers ruler whatever is necessary if the classroom doesn't have a clock bring a watch clear your desk of everything except the necessary materials [Music] then get comfortable and try to relax take a few very deep breaths tell yourself you're going to do a good job confidence is important you know now when you're told to start taking the test do so immediately without watching what your classmates are doing [Music] be sure you've read the instructions read them several times if necessary read them carefully [Music] you might be asked to use pen rather than pencil or you might be asked to write your name on each test sheet your pencil might get dull so have a second sharpened one available or a second pen if you're writing with ink keep working until you've answered all the questions as well as you can skip the ones you can't answer and come back to them later after you're through with the test check your answers for neatness readability accuracy correct grammar spelling and punctuation and later when the test is returned to you make sure you know why you made any mistakes you made and what the correct answers are [Music] that's my recommendation yours for happier tests betty bright i have no free booklet on tests but if you want more information just ask your local teacher [Music] all right um so handy dandy uh constantly confused there's some great names in there um so when i was younger i guess we were taking end of grade tests or what that version of integrated tests before there were in the grade tests um and i would finish early and so i'd be bored i'd be sitting at my desk and i'd started acting out scenes from star wars like quietly like miming it but um i got in trouble because i was distracting the other kids so um yeah that's one of the things i remember from taking standardized tests uh all right so behind me i have a telecini and uh tell us honey lets you transfer directly from film to video and so what i do is i transfer from film to video and then um run it through a digitizing box and then stream it via obs to you so this is a way to watch things um that we haven't scanned before digitized before um which is great because we have tens of thousands of films that we haven't seen and um you know sometimes i show stuff that are files that i've already scanned over the last 10 15 years um but this allows us to do nothing see new stuff um and so this this film is actually interesting because it's a compilation reel of commercials that won uh awards the clio award and uh we've been doing some digitizing scanning work for um the archive the clio archive uh now this reel is actually not from that archive we try not to show stuff that we are scanning for well there's no try we don't show stuff that we scan for clients unless we have their permission but this happened to be something that was distributed uh to libraries and and things like that so this is actually part of the av geeks archive and i think i have two or three reels but these are commercials uh from the 70s i'm not sure the exact year um and i think they're also besides domestic there's also international commercials here so we're gonna watch a bunch of commercials so enjoy you had a lot to carry and you wanted to carry lots of people too you need seat and maybe you'd work it you could walk to the back to change a diaper or squash a rebellion and windows 21 at least and one hole in the roof to let the sun in doors of course two in front two big ones here and one here in the back paint it up real pretty put it on wheels and you've got the whole idea behind the volkswagen station wagon [Music] clark's teaberry gum presents the teaberry shuffle [Music] all right so there's some herb albert here that's going to get me in trouble so i'm going to uh um turn that off um because the robots are listening um i'm a big fan of teaberry and also blackjack um i can't remember the other clark's gums um seem to remember my grandmother had some teaberry gum she wouldn't do a little jig like this but you know judith lowry is saving at first pennsylvania for karate lessons karate lessons oh [Music] [Music] to fly to rush at the wind and having caught it to climb as high as the wind itself to soar to hover serene beyond reality to look out to a horizon without bound to come home to return to the world again for the people of eastern airlines the miracle the exaltation the serenity of flight are a ceaseless wonder come share it with us [Music] during the next 60 seconds this toothbrush will brush 200 up and down strokes about as fast as you brush your teeth by hand now let's try the broxident automatic toothbrush this is how long it takes the bruxiten to brush 200 up and down strokes there 200 in less than four seconds so if you take a minute to brush your teeth instead of 200 up and down strokes with an ordinary toothbrush you'll get 3600 with a brexit because you rush with an ordinary toothbrush but you brush with a braxton the automatic toothbrush from script that just about sums it up but we can't end this commercial till we finish doing 200 up and down strokes by hand as promised mommy suzy left her bike in the driveway and what happened just can't be a size 10 i it's too small i need a new picture too i just had one put in six months ago sorry sir the line is too busy alice harriet said that you said that i told her that secret you told me not to tell her when things get you down remember alka-seltzer alka-seltzer has a headache reliever faster than planar buffered aspirin and those marvelous alkalizers to soothe your nervous stomach maybe the situation won't improve but you will our anniversary was yesterday fred trying to cut down on smoking switch to escape quality franks all meat no filler hickory smoked delicious barbecued i'm down to a pack a day let me see you sure why uh yes ma'am we have uh what size does your husband wear [Music] thirty-four five now we have these in a boxer model with a nice pattern of salamanders little side vents mm-hmm they're very nice we feel like are they labeled sand for eyes well we have marked them down a third for just this week that's a third off the price of course not a third off the short time are they sam fry what all our goods are pre-shrunk now you see how the little salamander here is crawling around for well not in so many words but they probably forgot what with the salamanders and all and this madam lady you can't be sure the fabric won't shrink unless you see sanforized you can't be sure of the best wash and wear performance unless you see sanfori's plus right there on the label be suspicious [Music] hi martha thanks for calling back i got a problem i gotta go to a school [Music] [Applause] a 75 foot telephone cable won't stop a hungry rat looking for garbage [Music] but a garbage can will your best defense against rats is a garbage can with the lid on sarva today [Music] aren't you glad you used dial don't you wish everybody did members of the caller board of directors uncle jackson carson this meeting opens on a happy note with kohler beer sales up up in pennsylvania up in ohio happened yes willie my statistics show we still have a problem oh with our name now 6.2 percent of the beardbreaker still asked for kaler so what if we change the name you could call it budweiser one way to get in touch with uncle jackson kohler is to suggest changing anything about his beer kohler still brewed with the dutch touch uncle brought over from holland in 1847 same light lively flavor same creamy kohler collar kohler brewed by people who love good beer and who know uncle jackson's watching george peter here with another of the famous pennamon sports drum and cotton underwear torture test the test designed to prove beyond a doubt that penman's fortron and cotton underwear for men is virtually indestructible today we are going to take this underwear 2700 feet above the niagara river and drop it into the 18 mile an hour current carrying it through the rapids uh careful with the underwear boys the underwear has just hit the water it's being swept along crashing into the huge rocks this is really a torture test for penguins for trolling cotton underwear let's have our cameras catch the underwear as it comes out of the water look at this penguin sport drone in cotton underwear a 2700 foot drop from a helicopter a three and a half mile rush through an 18 mile an hour current and it still holds in shape not a wrinkle in it prove positive that penman's mortal and cotton underwear is virtually indestructible remember you're more of a man impediments i want you stuff [Music] [Music] [Music] today when you dream tomorrow when your dreams come true be ready to capture all those dreams and pictures all it takes is a camera kodak film and a little thoughtfulness [Music] you [Music] today when you dream tomorrow when your dreams come true be ready to capture all those dreams and pictures all it takes is a camera kodak film and a little thoughtfulness [Music] [Music] is as i recall was in philadelphia in a dirigible to an altitude of 10 feet was then that i turned gnaw heading out of philadelphia which in itself can be a blessing left to the jaw i write to the head lewis measured him right to the body i left up to the jaw and snailing is down i see you stand like greyhounds in the slips straining upon the start the game's afoot follow your spirit and upon discharge [Music] england and sinchon [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] three two one zero ignition liftoff the sum of mankind's knowledge unscrambled to make an encyclopedia children want to read simply because they can understand it world book encyclopedia food for thought and 20 volumes welcome your local world book representative he's listed in the yellow pages [Music] take care of your cones you belong to me simple speeches choppy nose don't let them go on a screen quick take contact you belong to me don't go wrong [Music] please listen to me [Music] [Applause] [Music] they named your car after the wrong animal what between the gas and the repairs has your sleek wild animal turned into something else a beast that's rapidly eating you out of house and home traded it on a volvo volvo is economical about 25 miles to a gallon it's also reliable 95 of all the volvos registered in the united states in the last 11 years are still on the road you can keep a volvo a long time get out from under car payments and put your money into additions to your house payments swimming pool payments and fence payments to protect you from your neighbor's animals [Music] [Music] anthony martinetti lives in boston on prince street in the italian north end the home for more than 50 years of the prince spaghetti company anthony knows a lot about local italian customs and he knows a lot about prince because that's a local custom too prince is more than just authentic it's something that grows you with wheat germ energy other pastas leave out most days anthony takes his time going home but not today today is wednesday and as every family in the north end of boston will tell you wednesday is prince spaghetti day great moments at breakfast presented by kellogg's rice crispies [Music] my tears [Music] it's her 15th visit so far this year [Laughter] you can hit the road two ways you can drive or be driven when you're driven you look at scenery instead of traffic read books instead of road maps go to sleep instead of to pieces [Music] instead of rotten weather [Music] you see there really is a difference when you get where you're going you'll be raring to go not ready to drop [Music] so when you have to hit the road go greyhound we've got more going for you [Music] this is the fastest animal in the world the thoroughbred racehorse as he grows up they'll teach him how to break from the starting gate how to come from behind and how to keep going [Music] he'll learn how to run straight and how to hug the rail [Music] but all his breeding all his training has just one aim to make him fast so fast that by the time he's three years old he'll be able to run a mile at almost 40 miles an hour even with a man on his back if he grows up to be one of the very fastest you'll catch him in the beautiful country-like setting of aqueduct and belmont park [Music] hey is this one of those new turbine cars no it's an edsel hank look at this i need a muffler mister the last time we saw muffled for that was back in 63. welcome sir to gilmores home of gracious service headed man all i need is a muffler hold it man [Music] did you ever think of training cars i have something i might be able to put in sideways say i [Music] gas stations and store mufflers as a sideline at midas we do it for a living we have to do a better job so when you come to us for a muffler we'll have the muffler you need for almost any kind of car you're driving the pepto-bismol honorable glenn bolton watching a ball game he consumed four bags of potato chips two pounds of marshmallows three quarts of root beer and a cold can of stew to mitt his mother yanked him after seven innings susie howard after stocking her sidewalk stand with four gallons of pink lemonade ran into some rainy weather forcing her to liquidate her entire inventory mark schulte on a day camp nature hike polished off seven peanut butter and jelly sandwiches two canteens of lukewarm chocolate milk three bushes of wild raspberries and a caterpillar tim hayley he needed only eight more cereal box tops for a captain neptune's secret decoder wrench he would have made it in one sitting but he ran out of bananas there's no limit to what a kid will put in his stomach that's why as long as they keep making kids we'll keep making soothing pink pepto-bismol [Music] all right um so much great stuff there holy cow uh that egg uh world book encyclopedia ad i've i've seen that many times and i still am like wait why is hitler an egg wait what it's really and all the uh all the different uh actors rochester um showed up from jack benny um all the character actors really phenomenal and the contact ad was from 1969 because it said gold diggers of 1969. i don't know i feel like some of these ads are probably 69 70s i'm not sure i mean generally the clios would put together a compilation of for a year like all the ones that won for a year and they would also have international ones so i think i have another reel that has international ones on it as well uh for a given year um what's interesting about the compilation rules is there's no some of them have info to say like clio compilation reel and then the year and some of them don't have anything so that's what that was but um really great great stuff there um phenomenal uh and so thanks for joining me for that um let's round out the day by learning how to drive defensively cars on the way a driver in each car controlling speeding steel and glass as a driver you must learn to exist with all the other drivers on the road can you trust them to do the right thing can they trust you good driving on your part is not enough you must learn to drive defensively to always be on the lookout for mistakes the other fellow on the road may make chuck hinman is a typical driver has he learned to drive defensively chuck do you think you're a good driver well it seems that you are you keep within the legal speed limit and you leave plenty of room for other cars to pass but this is a through street with stop signs on the corners of the intersecting streets i wonder are you aware of these intersecting streets yes you had the right of way but chuck you have to remember that there are many careless drivers and pedestrians some are downright criminals of the risks they take you can't depend on their alertness or on their concern for the safety of other motorists it's up to you to watch out for them to drive defensively chuck what's that ball how can you hurt a ball you can't just remember a ball belongs to a child [Applause] you were lucky chuck but luck isn't defensive driving a defensive driver is always prepared for the worst defensive driving means constant watching watching for potential trouble all around you chuck aren't you a little too close to that car bumper chasing is not defensive driving you know how long it takes to stop for every 10 miles of speed you should keep one car length distance between you and the car in front that's better a defensive driver allows a little additional distance as a margin of safety now we'll let you drive for a while without making any comments but we'll be watching you and at the end of your trip we'll analyze your driving ability foreign [Music] huh [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] so [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] now we'll go back and review chuck's driving tactics have you ever noticed how some drivers fiddle with their radios and lose sight of what happens around them [Music] remember accidents take place within fractions of seconds always keep your eyes on the road chuck wasn't watching for the other driver's mistake he should have reduced his speed to avoid a potential collision do you like to sneak through a traffic light if you do you don't understand the meaning of defensive driving just assume that a car on the cross street is going to try to sneak through too when you make a fast left turn in front of traffic you're assuming that other drivers on the road are safer drivers than you that is certainly not defensive driving and the defensive driver is always on the lookout for pedestrians who can be even more unpredictable than the worst automobile driver [Applause] here is an inevitable hazard against which a defensive driver will guard himself it's the blind spot in a traffic pattern beware of hills sharp curves or large vehicles that interfere with your vision if you can't see what's ahead you should always expect the worst to be there don't trust to lock on the highway children can be unpredictable and irresponsible they know far less about safety than you do honking the horn is not enough a defensive driver would have used his brakes although the car ahead is parked off the road an alert driver will notice such clues as exhaust fumes turned front wheels and a driver in the front seat they all point to a potential collision super highways are built for safe high-speed driving chalk should have turned into the acceleration lane and then when traffic cleared moved carefully into the right-hand lane he shouldn't let a good road tempt him into dangerous driving it's wise to stay in one lane when driving on any road but if you have to change lanes check traffic to make sure that the lane you're entering is clear and signal your intentions when necessary this is not just courtesy it's self-preservation [Applause] have you decided how you'd have reacted to this reckless driver would you have started a race on a public highway a defensive driver has no need to prove himself on the highway to him a car is a means of transportation not a symbol of power [Applause] [Applause] it might just as well have been you it happens every day it's something you should defend against every moment you're driving your car it's your choice um so that was an early transfer uh i did a long time ago with a telecini an elmo um which is why the frame line was kind of jumping around a little bit um but uh yeah it's it's interesting the whole concept of driving now and distracted driving um and so i like watching films like this to kind of give you a sense of like wow what has really changed and what hasn't changed um but uh thanks for tuning in today and also thank you so much to uh zach and burro owl for buying us coffee um going to buy me a coffee.com av geeks and buying us coffee is a wonderful way to say thank you for doing what you're doing thank you for taking the time to pull a film and to put some leader on it and to transfer it for us little things like that caffeine is our drug of choice here at av geeks also going to avgeeks.com and seeing previous shows that we've done and uh hitting like uh that's a big deal hitting the little thumbs up the like button it doesn't take a lot to do that and it really kind of helps when it comes to getting our stream available to other people um that's what i've been told uh you can also subscribe and uh there's a notification thing which sometimes work and sometimes doesn't but all those things are great and also just watching and sharing uh and commenting all those things are really great and so thank you so much for tuning in today uh i have another reel of the clio commercial compilation which i might show in a couple of weeks or next week i don't know the thing is i don't know if it's the same reel because uh i just recently realized i had two different reels so i can't remember which one it is so at some point i might pull that out and see if it's if it's a different compilation reel but uh thanks for tuning in today thanks uh black hole uh monoplex for uh hosting us for the lunchtime shows they have some interesting stuff coming up if you go to their website i mentioned to the founder of the site about wanting to do chats that people like to do chats so i don't know if that's something that they've thought about with their other programming but um i pinged him about it so there you go but uh thanks again everybody for tuning in and i will see you again tomorrow one o'clock please rewind and love each other as this uh inside of this film cam has said you know i'm always actively looking for interesting things inside of film cans but this is this one just kind of raised the bar to the point where i haven't found anything nearly as interesting as this uh so but when i do then i will show it to you because that's what we do here um it's always show and tell here uh anyways have a great day and we'll talk to you soon six five four three eight seven six five four three eight seven six five four three eight seven six five four three eight seven six five four three eight seven six five four three eight seven six five four three
