do so so so so so so so so so so hello i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show sorry i got started a little early i was in the midst of a call that um and i did some poor timing which is why you got to see parts of taffy twice uh that was a cornet film and i believe it's called taffy's imagination and there's a series of films that um involve puppets and the same characters uh so there's one on bullying there's one on imagination um there's another one that i think i showed some time ago where it was uh someone was trying to i think was about line so anyways there are these little morality plays about different things that uh plague kids um and someone noticed that they said they're too cute it's it's all cleanly cute um and absurd so uh yeah this next film so what we do here is we watch old educational films and uh you guys watch them with us so thank you for joining us today this next film is called color keen in art and living and i think it's a little clipped but you'll get the point enjoy red orange green and blue violet are primary colors we shall use this three-dimensional model to show how these primary light colors combine as we project in color from each of the lamps opposite three sides of the model a light will be beamed from each lamp and a colored gelatin will be placed between the light and the three-dimensional mod surface we begin with a light primary red orange mixed with green it makes a yellow equal to the combined strength of the two primaries another secondary light color and green mixed with blue violet makes the secondary color turquoise or blue green when the three light primaries are combined they make white which has a strength equal to the sum of all three primaries we find therefore that each secondary light color has a strength equal to the sum of its two primaries and that white is as strong as the combined strength of the three primaries but pigment mixtures are subtractive rather than additive pigments reflect certain rays to give us our color sensations red yellow and blue are the three pigment primaries the pigments used here consists of a transparent liquid medium and solid particles which are contained in it we now represent these yellow pigment particles as rectangles highly magnified and we simulate primary and secondary light rays striking these particles which reflect only the yellow rays and since the particles are haphazardly ranged they do not even reflect all the yellow rays furthermore when for example we mix red and yellow pigments to make orange we do not increase the number of reflecting particles instead the total number in a given area remains the same but is now divided between red and yellow reflectors in pigment mixtures therefore we do not have the additive color strength obtained by mixing primary light beams to compensate for these weaknesses of pigments we have to resort to color keying keyed color starts in the center here for example appears to be a dwarf but without changing his size we can now make him appear to be a giant our impression of him is conditioned by his surroundings again this woodsman doesn't seem particularly cold although the temperature is 35 degrees below zero and yet this butcher coming into his refrigerator might feel cold although in a temperature of 35 degrees above zeal is to associate opposite or complementary colors with each other the complementaries are commonly placed in opposite areas on the familiar color wheel we can key a tan color to make it seem warmer by enclosing it in its complementary color a frame of color somewhat similar to tan makes it look colder and darker we can even key white here are two circles on a white background we key the circled area at the left by surrounding it with black it now looks much lighter than the circle area at the right this girl's hair looks light when we see her between two dark-haired girls but if her companions are light blondes the girl in the center will now impress us as having dark hair if an artist in painting a picture of this butcher wants to create a feeling of refrigerator cold he might do it by increasing the intensity of his colors contrasting the warm yellows of the beef with the butcher's cool blue shirt such may have been the intention of abraham ratner when he painted this somewhat similar subject yellow is complementary to purple and therefore heightens the dark purple color of the pyramid at the left as compared to the pyramid at the right since only the immediate surroundings key a color we can restrict the yellow to the immediate neighborhood of the pyramid and we see that it still seems a darker more intense purple than the one on the right rockwell kent uses such keying in his painting winter owned by the metropolitan museum of art the faint yellow in the sky adjacent to the blue mountain emphasizes the coldness of the scene color king also has many applications to the art of makeup this girl for example wants her gray blue eyes to appear more blue so she is applying a complimentary up an outdoor sun and would do the same but is usually harder to acquire she chooses a dark shade of lipstick because its darkness will make her teeth seem whiter thus in makeup colors are emphasized when used with their complementaries they can be emphasized in another way by echoing the color the light blue dress echoes the blue of the eyes now she adds a touch of stronger blue at a little distance the observer will look back and forth and the stronger color will persuade him that even grey blue eyes are really blue a green dress will key reddish hair and make it seem more red a spot of even brighter red will further enhance the hair by echoing its color here is a portrait painted by phoebe flory walker to demonstrate that if a subject has a naturally solid complexion a reddish background will only emphasize this power when however we remove the reddish background and substitute for it a greenish one we find that the complexion appears more normal king can be applied to pigment mixtures for example violet is a mixture of red and blue to make it look more red we surround it with green the complementary of the red component of violet by framing it in orange the opposite of the blue component of violet we make it appear more blue we can also key secondary colors by subtraction we frame the violet at the left with blue that on the right with red subtracts blue from the violet the red frame subtracts red from the violet making it appear more blue both keyed and echoed color are used in interior decoration a rug or an upholstered chair can repeat a color picked up from a picture and can echo it or the entire room may be planned as a background for the hostess who will occupy it keying color we have seen is vital to the art of the painter it can be used to advantage in improving personal appearance and it adds charm to home decoration keyed color contributes contrast any phases of our existence [Music] all right let me see if the volume is okay [Music] how am i volume wise with my mic i don't want to blow blow you out i was when i was doing that hypnotic behavior thing yesterday i was playing with the mic levels and i want to make sure that we're not deafening you um so that film was beautiful kodachrome and oh now it's very low all right hold on let me try now too low too low low low that's weird somebody said that i was too loud um trying now is this too loud all right anyways so uh kodachrome um that film was originally kodachrome and i do have a faded ectochrome copy of it which is absurd because it's all about color um and uh but uh the thing is with a lot of the kodachrome it was it was very brittle uh so that film you noticed had lots of splices in it so somebody was playing it and you know something happened and it basically either you know ripped or shredded or so there was lots of splices um yeah so that's what i've noticed with some of these films is like wow this is beautiful color but it's like wow it's insanely splicy at the beginning and the end and somewhere in the middle um and so uh i just think that that color stock running through some projectors um works out pretty well um seems like william you're i don't know how delayed you are but you seem to be the one person who's having the problems there's a 60 cycle hum in the mic all right i'm going to stop reading comments and i'm going to show another film and we'll try to figure this out all right uh here is fire prevention in the home [Music] [Laughter] [Music] energy at work under control to make life convenient danger that the different kinds of energy we use in our homes may get out of control when energy gets out of control this can be the result each year in the united states more than six hundred thousand fires break out in houses and apartment buildings and more than six thousand deaths result from these fires how can such accidents be prevented let's look at some common causes of household fires and find out how they can be avoided what does flammable mean flammable means that a substance will catch fire easily and burn rapidly the word inflammable means the same thing using a flammable hair spray near a heater could result in a serious accident if the spray were to catch fire and ignite the girl's hair and clothes here is a safer choice there won't be an accident because there are no open flames or red hot heater coils nearby you may have noticed that most liquids in spray cans are flammable a wise decision is to follow the directions on the labels the way to prevent this kind of fire is obvious remove the causes a modern heater is better designed for safety and keeping it at a safe distance protects both the boy and his bathrobe it's a matter of knowing how fires start and making safe decisions to prevent them do you see anything dangerous here the boy has left his airplane parts to soak in a tray of gasoline there is a gas heater in the room and the burner is on when gasoline is exposed to air it evaporates the vapors are highly explosive a better choice is to avoid the use of gasoline altogether a non-flammable non-explosive solvent will clean the engine parts just as well but even this kind of solvent should be used outdoors so the vapors will escape harmlessly in the air and not be inhaled so again it's a matter of making a safe choice tools that use heat should be handled carefully and when not in use should be disconnected they'll need more light to find the jacks should she use these matches a much safer choice the girl has found the jacks but has she overlooked anything what about the matches matches should be stored in a metal container out of reach and out of sight of small children in one year in the united states over thirty one thousand fires were caused by children playing with matches this is this a safe place to store oily rags [Applause] it could happen days weeks even months later inside the pile of rags vapors from the paint mix chemically with oxygen from the air heat builds up and the result is fire it's called spontaneous combustion [Applause] there's a better place to put rags a metal can will not burn so if the rags do ignite the fire won't spread the city trash collectors will dispose of the rags safely so [Applause] [Music] an electrical power failure not an unusual situation a neighbor's lights are still on so the power failure must be in this house alone some of the lights in the house still burn so probably only one electrical circuit has failed a fuse has blown why the problem could have something to do with the record player so it should be disconnected here's the cause of the power failure a frayed and exposed electric cord a dangerous fire hazard what happened is this the two wires in the cord touched causing a short circuit the fuse blew cutting off the power and preventing a fire the boy has been instructed about what to do in a case like this first he turns off the main power switch then he replaces the fuse and notice that the 15 ampere fuse is replaced with one the same size so the electrical circuit and the house are still protected we have seen only a few ways of preventing fires in homes you can probably think of many more it is even possible you have had a fire where you live do you know how it could have been prevented [Music] wonderful film um yeah i forgot to say this yesterday uh puma we added puma to the list of uh interesting uh puma reptiles vegetable abdomen protein and um rollaids relates rolaids rollaids puma um this film is interesting because it's it's actually made by atnt and it's talking about television and how great television is going to be i like films like this that kind of talk about this is what the future is going to be like and we get to go back and say no it didn't quite work out that way so here's stepping along with television [Music] stepping along with television we certainly stepped in a hurry just now all the way from waukesha wisconsin to a television studio in new york [Music] here are the lights the cameras the sound equipment all typical of what you'd see at any of the several television broadcasting companies even so it's a long long way to walk ashore how can these dancers leap like a sun beam across 800 miles of hills and lakes and prairies well let's see for ourselves starting in a new york studio let's follow their performance along the pathway that turns a large chunk of our country into one tremendous stage first catch the action in terms of light and shade they then translate it into electrical impulses which pass through these small cables on the floor these cables lead to the control room overlooking the studio here we see technical men adjusting the television image from this point on the program is channeled into bell system facilities which now take over to carry the program on its journey riding on local telephone company lines the program speeds underground to a telecasting tower and on to the thousands of television sets throughout the metropolitan area all at the same time however it is speeding underground to a telephone communications building many blocks away [Music] ah here are the dances again we'll be seeing them quite often in other bell system control rooms as we follow the program all the way to that living room in waukesha wisconsin a careful check on the image and the music and we're really on our way underground the program travels on a coaxial cable highway then all in the twinkling of an eye it drops off in philadelphia here in the telephone building we hurry along to another control room where we again check in on the dances incidentally a line takes the program to the top of a television tower where it is telecast locally but in the meantime and far quicker than it takes to tell it it speeds on its way to pittsburgh here let's pause for a moment just to watch the dancers and listen to the music [Music] but now let's resume our journey westward onto cleveland and toledo and chicago here in chicago our coaxial cable highway takes us once more to the control room of a telephone building and sure enough the dancers are right here with us [Music] this lady might almost have stepped right out of a famous poem a dancing shape an image gay to haunt to startle and waylay up to now the program has traveled on coaxial cable new york to chicago all in a flash now in chicago we make an instant shift to another bell system means of communication known as radio relay let's interrupt our journey here on the top of a telephone building in chicago while we see what this radio relay is all about this square-faced giant horn is an antenna for sending a special kind of radio wave this antenna concentrates the radio waves into a very narrow beam aimed straight as a rifle shot to a receiving tower on top of this tower a similar horn captures the signals and channels them through a hollow metal pipe to a series of amplifiers which build up their power restored to normal strength the signals are now passed on through a sending antenna to a second radio relay tower here then in essence is what is known as radio relay incidentally our program from new york could have come by radio relay instead of by coaxial cable [Music] but let's return now to our television program as it's being beamed from the top of a telephone building in chicago it can go west to kansas city and omaha or to resume our journey it's an easy trip northward to milwaukee and to a receiving antenna on top of the local telephone building now down through the building to the control room and what do you know the dancers again and not the least bit tired from their long journey but naturally they came here almost on the wings of light [Music] and now they simply hop on a local telephone cable zip over to a television station and jump out in all directions among the many places they land guess where walker show of course now it's easy they're picked up on a television antenna on a certain house and the trip from the new york studio is finished the time just about the 200th part of a second i'll answer it mother i think it's jack hello is that you jack jack who's jack is your granddad calling from boston grandpa how wonderful mother it's grass oh grandpa you'll never guess what we're doing we're watching a television program coming all the way from new york isn't that super oh i don't know how about me talking to you all the way from boston oh but grandpa this is really something listen honey after what i've seen in the last 50 years nothing surprises me anymore 50 years yes a lot has happened since granddad as a little boy first jangled an old-fashioned telephone in those days it was a great event to talk in the telephone at all let alone from boston to walk ashore wisconsin then from his window in boston he saw the sky full of wires later on the wires began to disappear into cables not much bigger than a man's wrist carrying more conversations to more and more places until finally the long-distance network of today came into being in the same way grandpa saw wires for carrying radio programs grow from nothing only 25 years ago to the present nationwide special network over which the bell system regularly carries programs to more than a thousand local stations owned by the broadcasting companies recently grandpa has been hearing a lot about coaxial cable and radio relay how they're good for carrying both conversations and television programs [Music] nothing surprises granddad anymore so if he should look at a map of bell system television networks as they are today he'd probably tell you it's just history repeating itself even now more than 40 cities are connected on a growing network of radio relay and coaxial cable television channels making it possible for millions of people to be eyewitnesses of scenes more than 1500 miles away more the bell system will keep on stepping along with television as fast as the requirements of the television industry are clearly demonstrated considering bell system history grand car would say it's no pipe dream it's just plain logical [Music] puma um yeah i i like that uh that film because it kind of talks about the network and also um i guess at the time not a lot of people had television um it was more and more people getting television and so bell system was like look we're on the cutting edge of this new technology that you love but also we deliver your phone calls and so we're awesome love us um and it's interesting to see the the the uh route that 18 bell system 18 t uh got broken up um a t name got bought by singular i believe and now a t owns um warner brothers and owns a lot of television content and delivers a lot of television content for better for worse including turner classic movies and all the cartoons all the cartoons that you love um so it's interesting to see how that kind of works uh let's see uh so behind me i have a telecini where we can watch films live they transferred via coaxial cable um to a box that i have right here that nudge over and see and which gets uh broadcast to you via coaxial cables um and fiber and etc um so this is uh this film is part of a series uh i've i often show almost weekly now the books are for burning uh segment from magnificent major which is part of the series called unicorn tales and periodically i find another film that's part of that series and i always hope that is as good if not better than magnificent major we will see so today we are watching um carnival circus so i'm hoping that there's going to be some more dynamic uh choreography uh in a disco kind of bent to whatever we're about to see so here's carnival circus enjoy [Music] [Music] i know you didn't do it purposely but i still don't think we can ever will a fortune that every time you spin and it stops on the number eight it'll make people nervous [Music] really good granny thanks it ought to say someplace that all the money we take in goes for building the youth center okay i got room [Music] foreign [Music] you know what i think we're gonna be all right i don't know trouble could be out there anywhere just waiting for us [Music] solomon i'm waiting and i'm following sir you very yeah [Music] [Music] i'm sorry i broke your carnival i'm sorry it's just that you make me laugh sometimes maybe i can get my parents to move to a new town i could use a fresh start all right just trying too hard take it all a little easier you can't go trying to do everything take it all a little slower you know kind of one step at a time there's lots of things you can do the only thing i can do is mess things up hey we don't have any time for her andy we have to get contributions to donations from half the people in town we got a million stops to make i don't know how we're gonna do it all simple one step at a time is that your answer for everything [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] hey [Music] [Music] but not foreign [Music] [Music] [Applause] it snaps it clicks you're getting [Applause] wow [Applause] [Applause] uh [Applause] i did it [Applause] oh my dear my dear you are wonderful the richest man in uniform city see i always wanted to be a clown but my parents wouldn't thing you can have the land for your community center free [Music] i told you kelly everybody's something sometimes it just takes a little time to find out what everybody's born [Music] we try to [Music] [Music] that [Music] the sound that seems like strange music [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] everybody sings and again [Music] and all together we are singing [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so um it's not a bad film but man compared to magnificent major i'm not sure what it is um it's it's just not as good and certainly the that main
