foreign ER welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and ponder about them and think about them um I am no longer in Portland although I do have some photos um one of the reasons that we went to Portland is to honor a former film collector exhibitor Dennis nyback and we looked at his collection um they're trying to figure out what to do with the collection and so we were trying to offer some advice and try to help them kind of figure out what they got but uh it was great looking at his uh his collection a lot of duplication of titles there there's a some equipment that he has um but he has many friends in Portland who stepped up and who have helped with the collection and one of the reasons we went to Portland was to do a show based on his a show that he used to do called now I know why you're scared which were films that were shown to kids kind of trigger films like they're pretty intense um but anyways uh today we're gonna watch films about dogs we yesterday we watched films about cats but today it's dogs so this is what we're gonna watch Tippy the town dog putting on the dog puppy trouble uh this one I like I think it was actually nominated for an Academy Award one-eyed men are Kings of course Skipper learns a lesson which I like because it has my name in the title and finally bad dog before we get started with that though I did want to say that we are down to the final four and as far as the toe tapping tournament and we would love for you to vote I've already gotten some votes from you and so it's people working with data versus the ZIP code song and keep the promise versus a run for your life and uh you have until two next Tuesday at midnight to enter your vote and then we'll have the the final two and we'll see who wins I have some ideas in my head who's gonna win but it could be an upset and there certainly was uh some upsets during this whole turn tournament so anyways um let's watch films about dogs thanks everybody for tuning in if you like what you saw hit the thumbs up do the super thanks uh if you're in San Francisco uh in Bay Area we're doing a show at Exploratorium on Saturday at noon I'm showing year 1999 year 1999 A.D and um then at the Alamo Drafthouse in the Mission District on Monday I'm showing that film series that I mentioned now I know why you're scared with some outrageous films that probably should not have been shown to children so maybe I'll see you there that'd be great I'd love to see some of these faces that show up uh in the comments so without any further ado here's films about dogs and Tippy the town dog enjoy thank you every day on his way to school Jimmy stops to say hello to tippy tippy is a friendly little Terrier owned by Mr Black Jimmy lives near Mr Black Jimmy has no dog of his own he likes Tippy very much Mr Black is bringing Tippy his dinner he likes to be and he tries to take good care of his dog but Mr Black is a very busy man he doesn't have time to play with Tippy a dog needs someone to play with Mr Black says Tippy's dinner pan won't stand still Jimmy enjoys watching Tippy he tells Mr Black how much he'd like to have a dog just like Tippy Mr Black tells Jimmy to come and play with Tippy anytime a dog needs someone to play with but now it's time for school and Jimmy must be on his way he'll stop and play with Tippy when he returns Mr Black is glad that Tippy will have someone to play with now Tippy is Alone Again but say there's someone to play with a rabbit has wandered into Tippy's yard he goes right out again though maybe Tippy can catch him Tippy wants to play with a rabbit he thinks the rabbit would make a good playmate but the rabbit runs away from Tippy he finds a good place to hide where Tippy can't see him Tippy goes down the street to look for someone who will play with him he's free to go any place he wants what will he do now here's a dog to play with or is he too big for Tippy Tippy is glad to see the big dog he thinks he's found someone who'll play with him Tippy is a friendly dog but the big dog growls a Tippy is Tippy in danger can he run faster than the big dog yes Tippy is safe at least for now but what's this maybe Tippy can find someone here to play with it's an organ grinder and his monkey does the monkey like Tippy Tippy would like to be friends but the monkey gets angry and he chases Tippy away poor Tippy no one for him to play with it sounds as though there are many dogs nearby maybe Tippy can find a friend in here [Music] with all these dogs he thinks he should find at least one friend but Tippy wonders why the dogs are in cages it's the dog pound where the dog catcher keeps lost dogs until their owners come there's the dog catcher now if he can catch Tippy he'll call Mr Black Tippy is afraid of the dog catcher away Tippy runs now where will Tippy go there's a fire station maybe Tippy will find friends there this fireman likes dogs Tippy seems to have found a friend at last the other firemen like dogs too maybe the firemen will make Tippy their mascot but what's that it's the fire Bell the firemen will have to go to the fire Tippy's new friends are leaving him poor Tippy just when he found some friends to play with there go the firemen [Applause] leaving Tippy Alone Again there's no use staying here any longer Tippy might as well go somewhere else meanwhile Jimmy has come back from school he calls Tippy of course he's surprised when Tippy doesn't come could something have happened to Tippy maybe Mr Black will know Jimmy must find out he calls Mr Black but Mr Black doesn't know where Tippy is say there's a hole under the fence could Tippy have gone through this hole Jimmy and Mr Black agree that Tippy must have gone out through the hole Mr Black has something to tell Jimmy you know Jimmy says I don't think Tippy has been happy here a dog needs someone to play with and I don't have time to play with him you'd give him the company he should have Jimmy says I'd like to have him Mr Black I take care of him and play with him all the time find Tippy Jimmy and you can have him Jimmy thanks Mr Black and runs off to find Tippy where could Tippy have gone almost anything can happen to a dog running loose in a city has Tippy had an accident the dog pound would be the first place to look there's the dog pound Jimmy let's hope that Tippy is inside is Tippy here no no Tippy Jimmy is sorry he knows Tippy would be safe in the dog pound and where could Tippy have gone maybe he went this way Jimmy had better hurry or Tippy may be lost for good there's the fire station maybe Tippy's there now Jimmy asks the firemen the fireman has seemed to be he went that way he tells Jimmy Jimmy runs to find Tippy at this very moment Tippy is just a little away from the fire station will Jimmy and Tippy meet will Jimmy ever find Tippy Here Comes Tippy now but no he's turned around poor Jimmy and poor Tippy they may never find each other now it's no use Jimmy it looks like Tippy's gone for good but look here comes Tippy again will Jimmy find him will Jimmy see Tippy yes Jimmy has found his dog and Tippy has found his best friend Jimmy is happy and Tiffy is happy Jimmy will have a dog for his very own Tippy will always have someone to play with they'll be friends from now on [Music] [Music] thank you hunting dogs have been companions to men since long before the dawn of history but the most highly trained of all of these are the modern bird dogs here we are in the older patches of Southern Nova Scotia in quest of one of the rarest and most difficult of game birds the woodcock [Music] our dogs wear carefully knowing exactly what is expected of them and then the point and what a picture and so far as we know the first motion pictures ever made of the Woodcock in his native element [Music] hurry up you with a gun the woodcock's about to fly but Chung the center stands as still as a statue here you see the dog the Hunter and the most elusive of game birds dropped by a quick shot [Music] but it is not the thrill of good Marksmanship that lingers the longest it's the memory of a man's favorite dog on point foreign ERS North Carolina to see some of the most highly trained pointers in the country we're not going hunting this time just to witness what constitutes perfect performance by a couple of beautiful Sportsman's dogs which are the result of long and infinitely careful training of many generations at the famous Rideau panels [Music] first we'll go out in the training field with Rito Smasher he's taken from the kennels on a leak when turned loose however he stands perfectly still until given the signal to go bird dogs locate the game it's fail here by their sense of smell and when coming onto a Covey they freeze in their tracks like this nor must they move as much as a fraction of an inch no matter what happens until told to do so a friendly path or being lifted off the ground by the tail has no effect even when the hunter goes on ahead which is a Temptation difficult for any dog to survive Rito Smasher remains standing like a statue in these same kennels there is also a Setter who is Master of the finest form and technique his name is rito major and what he doesn't know about the Finesse of finding quail and of holding a point in the best traditions of his breed few dogs have learned just what's the perfect stance of this beautiful Center [Music] foreign is it any wonder that their owner would not part with any of these dogs at any price one of the rarest of all the varieties of hunting dogs is the river coolers of Nova Scotia there are not more than a score of proficiently trained individuals in existence it is said that the Primitive Indians watch the wild fox entice Ducks close enough to catch them and train their dogs which resemble the fox to do likewise hence we have rivertollars or decoy dogs from behind an ordinary duck Hunter's blind the dog is made to repeatedly chase a stick this Believe It or Not arouses the Curiosity of the wild ducks to such an extent that they actually swim in close to see what it's all about the dog mustn't bark or stop to stare at the approaching Birds and the hunters must stay completely concealed or the birds will fly away before they have come within range of the guns but in this way they have been enticed almost to the shore then when the guide gives the signal the hunters rise up and we'll have roast duck for dinner these dogs are also excellent retrievers although this particular one was so well trained that he had ignored the approaching duck so completely that the guide had to point out to him where the birds had fallen whether or not the claim is true that by this method the fox ever was able to lure a wild duck in close enough to catch it or if the Indians ever saw it accomplished really matters little the fact remained that these dogs are bred to resemble the wild thoughts and they are capable of luring even the weary black Mallard in close enough for the hunter to shoot them foreign beat of hunting dog is the Chesapeake Bay Retriever they take their name from Chesapeake Bay Maryland although the type originated from Newfoundland training puppies is sometimes a long and discouraging task they are first taught to retrieve a lot of cloth or canvas tied to somewhat resembling a duck later they are trained with real ducks in water when their education is properly completed they make one of the best of retrievers this is house pal American and Canadian show bench Champion owned by Anthony a bliss of New York pal is going to give us a demonstration of just how a champion Chesapeake properly retrieves attained dust from the Frozen surface of the training Pond without injuring or roughing a feather these dogs are very tender mouth and the duck in fact has done this so often that he believes is the game that's the boy go on pal go to it and don't mind that Old Mallard laughing at you you're doing fine sooner or later you'll get him and then you'll have the last laugh that's a good boy keep up the good work stock it with a lift you're almost there and after all remember you're a champion [Music] taking the duck gently in his mouth which is an important part of careful training of every bird dog pal comes home with a bacon or duck I should have said to the Handler of a hunting dog a nice retrieve has the same Pleasant reaction as a home run to a baseball enthusiast but being a champion is just part of the day's work for house pal [Music] now how do fancy poodles get in with these hunting dogs poodles with all their coquettish air trimming are associated with silken Boudoir but they were once used entirely for hunting their original German name is purohum meaning puddledorff these wonderful individuals are lucky Niger the white one and Champion Grizzly library of Piper's cost two of the best of their breed in the world and Prides of the Black Ink kennels at patona New York [Music] just to prove they are not the dog most people think and as expert and Hardy as any other breed we've put a couple of them to a severe taste it is near zero weather and Ice printed the lake but breaking through into the frigid water cannot discourage these sturdy Blue Bloods from reaching and retrieving the wild duck that floats far out from Shore lacking Cafe parfait in fact his name who reaches the first proudly start swimming in Who deliver the bird to his trainer although the poodle is used today almost exclusively as a show dog or for theatrical purposes because of their extreme intelligence and facility for learning they are still used in Germany Scotland and England as retrievers these two however are among the very few in this country that have been trained for this purpose [Music] now we'll hide behind this blind before it's a stormy day and the Ducks are flying there they come and watch him drop at the order to go and not before the dog is out of the blind like a Flash and on his way this time it's Labrador retrievers with which we are wetting they are built very much on the order of Chesapeake also come originally from Newfoundland and are black in color These Fine dogs belong to Major Max Fleischman and are out for a day sport on the shooting preserve near Ventura California here's some more dust shut and the Flash these dogs watch the flying Ducks as closely as do the hunters and they Mark the spot where they hit birds fall when they have difficulty in locating a fallen bird they are trained to respond to directions from the Handler or Hunter although it is very seldom they need such assistance but this we're about to witness a dog and cat fight [Music] well there he goes and he was such a nice dog but it just goes to show what good backyard manners a hunting dog can be trained to have course the cat deserves a bit of credit too all in all whether they be pointers Chesapeake poodles or kitchen hounds or Champions or just plain musk a dog is a mighty fine pal to have around [Music] all animals serve the man without the domestic animal it would be difficult for us to exist [Music] they Supply our most essential food [Music] today for any collage part of the clothing we wear [Music] in the work life of the nation they do much of our manual labor in return for these services we must fulfill our responsibility by caring for the animal's Health and Welfare they must be water they must be fair their sleeping quarters kept clean while young they must be trained and prepared for their ultimate jobs the dog AIDS man in other ways in time of War his work is of a serious nature [Music] in time of Peace he acts as our the dog's Beauties May lie in the sporting field this world they are expanding the elite of his world are governed by the American Kennel Club where detailed records are kept of each registered dog's history and achievement there are Humane Societies to help care for and guard every dog against ill treatment when necessary these societies have laws enforced for his protection the standards of each breed are maintained in the show ring this is where the bench show Champions are made [Music] in a trial such as this a dog wins obedient titles permitting the use of letters after his name the equivalent of a PhD [Music] and there are schools where he may learn the good manners that every pet should know [Music] this might be called a prep school of dog Doom [Music] teaching the puffer feeding Karen training that should begin early [Music] the young learned quickly the pleasure of this responsibility [Music] the general public may be informed of what's right and what's wrong through radio broadcasts specialized dog film through magazines newspapers and books one such book is this where the author stresses the fact it's not the dog that needs training but the owner we admit we like dogs but not at night under these circumstances golly could I choke that one just wait until your Missy gets home you'll catch it [Music] something scandalous I never knew when I was completely alone and when I wasn't [Music] he must have had the patience of Job but gradually aren't what it was all about [Music] always a sudden crash I never knew about me I stay on the floor now but we'll grow older and like to steal I got my nose slapped sometimes the smells were so tempting but I knew they would be watching [Music] it was such fun chasing cars and horseback Riders but I soon learned my lesson when I got chased instead that wasn't any fun My Pal Trixie was killed that way [Music] I didn't always like my collar and Lead now I love going for a walk when we pass through a doorway I am considered well-mannered I wait for my Missy to go first if our owners are careful how they feed it we feel strong and well naturally we prefer meat either raw or cooked and please don't cut off the fat we need that for our coats they're very tasty when moisty with boiling water or hot soup [Music] minerals vitamins and cod liver oil are important for our health we'll be better looking pups if they're in our diet [Music] being creatures of habit we like to be fed at regular hours we're unusually good at telling time one good Square meal is worth several daytime snacks [Music] if we refuse our dinner it may mean we're not feeling well the best way to be certain is to take our temperature [Music] we won't mind not really 101 to 102 is normal but 103 degrees means a quick trip to the veterinarian [Music] we must have fresh clean water and get it whenever we're searching that way we drink often and little at a time and don't get sick testing regularly for worms is a must we may have one of several kinds that can only be seen through a microscope it's an awful feeling to be lost help us feel safe see that every year we have a license tag and name plate attached to our collars this way our names and addresses are registered and our owners can quickly be located it was weak before brownie was reunited with Jimmy because she had no license tags a bath is always welcome any coal top product will do the work before starting to bathe stuff our ears with cotton to keep the water out foreign [Music] [Music] that does feel good [Music] thorough rinsing makes our coat shine we're scrubbing dried as quickly keep this from Catching cold if the tartar is scraped from our teeth they'll be white and beautiful like our owners we want to keep our nice teeth we need them for those big knuckle bones a swab dipped in alcohol or ether removes the wax from our ears if this is done regularly we might avoid that painful tanker trouble that so many of us have [Music] keep our nails cut when they grow along we get flat feet styling they'll keep short and we won't damage stockings and rugs after a final combing we are ready for the day's Adventure they're all dogs and they live only for their master [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] once upon a time in a neighborhood pretty much like yours perhaps there were some children who played together all the time there was Betty Mike Pete and Larry they had lots of fun digging in a vacant lot one day a new girl moved into the neighborhood her name was Susan and she had a dog whose name was skipper Skipper was a cute little dog and Susan was very fond of him she liked to pet him and play with him she liked to teach him tricks too of course Skipper loved Susan he liked to play with her and he liked to do the tricks she had taught him but fond as Susan was of Skipper she didn't want to play with him all the time and when the children who lived in the neighborhood came along she was glad to see them they invited Susan to play in the vacant lot with them Larry said come and play with us we're digging a trench Mike said if you'll come and play with us you can have one of our shovels you should see our trench Pete said it's long and wide and deep too we're having fun I'd like you to play with us said Betty I've been hoping a girl would move into our neighborhood please come Susan decided to play with the children she asked Skipper to come along but Skipper refused to go he didn't like the looks of these new children and he wouldn't play with them while Susan and her new friends went off to have a good time Skipper stayed at home on the porch I won't have anything to do with such funny looking children he told himself so he just stayed there and solved now there were some dogs in this neighborhood they belonged to Susan's new friends they played together too when they saw Skipper sitting alone on the porch they came over to ask him to join them but when the first dog came up and invited Skipper to play Skipper looked at him and barked a mean bark I won't play with you he said you have a funny shape the first dog's feelings were hurt so he turned around and left the second dog came up to Skipper come and play with us he said but Skipper didn't like the size of this dog he was too big so he snarled and barked at him telling him to go away the big dog backed away he was a nice dog and didn't want to fight Skipper looked at the third dog who was still sitting on the lawn and he snarled and barked again in the meanest voice he could manage I don't like the color of that dog's coat he said to himself he snarled and barked some more and he chased the new dogs all the way down the street as Skipper trotted back to the porch he thought to himself I certainly won't play with dogs like those I don't like their looks I'll just wait until a dog who's the right size shape and color comes along or I won't play at all so Skipper just sat and sat and sat but soon he got tired of sitting he decided to look for something to do no Skipper don't go into the garage there's poster paint in there no Skipper skipper [Music] uh-oh poor Skipper poster paint all over him and off he went to find Susan to ask her to clean him up as he started down the street he met the first dog go away said the dog go away you look funny Skipper was surprised no one had ever spoken to him like that before but the new dog sounded so angry that Skipper thought he'd better leave and then he met the second dog the second dog looked at Skipper and said go away you're funny maybe you don't remember me Skipper said to him I'm Skipper you wanted to play with me before not now said the second dog go away he sounded angrier than the first dog and Justice Skipper was about to leave the other dogs came up hiding behind the big dog the third dog said go away Skipper we don't like you Skipper had had enough look he said you're all being pretty silly this is just paint on me it's only on the Outside Inside I'm no different than I was before you're the silly one said the big dog we don't care what you're like on the outside it's inside that matters and inside you're not a nice dog and then the three dogs chased Skipper all the way home back on his front porch Skipper felt very sorry for himself he whimpered and complained in the saddest voice he could manage [Music] in the vacant lot where she was playing Susan herdskipper with the other children following her she raced off to see what was wrong as soon as she saw him she knew what was wrong she went into the house for soap water in the wash tub in the backyard all the children helped give Skipper a good bath and while they washed him Skipper did a lot of thinking I have been a silly dog he said to himself imagine not liking others because of their looks while the children dried him he fought some more size shape or color make no difference after all this is the only thing that counts and being nice is something inside nothing else really matters after Skipper was washed and dried everyone went back to play in the vacant lot the other dogs were there Skipper said to them I'm sorry about the way I behaved I'd like to play with you now if you let me after that everyone played together and had a good time [Applause] [Music] and of course Susan was very proud of skipper [Music] [Music] YouTube [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] [Music]
