so so so so so all right hello everybody i'm skip alzheimer and i have a special guest today i'm excited um partially because i have a special guest today at the archive and not um via some zoom dooflachie uh scott phillips hi is joining us uh scott is i've been wanting to have an elementary school teacher on for a while because we mostly show old educational films and what grade do you teach i teach fourth grade all right excellent and i asked you kind of what your favorite subject was so fourth grade is when you have a teacher that teaches this and then you have another teacher who teaches that is that right no not in my school no it's yeah you're you're pretty much with them all day except for uh you know gym or art or music wow so you do math you do science social studies reading writing wow yep and is it it's not called language arts anymore it is called language arts but i'm old school so nice it's old school literally yeah right awesome uh so i picked some things that i thought um would be good because you you said you like social studies so it's my favorite subject to teach yeah uh so i picked a couple of films that we actually have on the television behind me um related to social studies and hopefully we can talk about them and and one of the big questions i'm going to ask after we watch it is do we still teach this or some or some concept to this and how is it taught and are there you know do we just watch youtube videos or now nowadays do they have some plug that they plug into their head i don't know how the technology works so all right um we're gonna watch and i might have shown this in the past but it's such a great film this is who needs rules and i feel like this is from like 69 early 70s enjoy rules most of what we do is directed by rules [Music] rules help us get along better and safe together [Music] there were no driving [Music] games softball if there were no rules none at all could you even play softball if there were no rules [Music] rules are necessary in order to tell you what to do and to tell others what to expect from you there are rules for young people [Music] rules for adults [Music] even rules for people who make the rules sometimes rules conflict with what we want and what we believe let's see you get this one great now you've lost it no i haven't we'll find i it where it went if you only know how to do a frisbee let's do it in this area it should be around here someplace boy if we don't find this it's your fault you here it is connie i found it hey connie come here a minute i wonder whose dog he is he looks like he's starving know what i bet he doesn't have a home no he must belong to somebody i bet not nobody bring him to the park without a calling leash it's against the rules so what maybe he ran away no look how skinny he is i bet he hasn't had any footing days have you fella you know what it'll be if we could take them home and keep them are you kidding you know they don't allow pets in our building well i know but still yeah well come on mama have lunch ready pretty soon [Music] okay steve that's it he really has to go home now but how can he he hasn't got any home well he can't come with us that's for sure we'd all get in trouble hey listen what if we put him in that old storage room nobody ever goes in there it's still the building it'd be the same as if we kept him in our apartment i don't mean for always just for this afternoon then we could at least give him something before we let him go gee i don't know steve come on charlie look how hungry [Music] lunchtime foods wow look at me i wonder how long since it's been since he's eight how long since you egg boosh his name's not pooch it's frisky how do you know because that's what i decided to name him now wait a second steve i like him too but we just can't keep him and that's that you know the rules against keeping pets in our building as well as i do i've been thinking connie what if we hide frisky's box way behind those little trunks and then bring him food and stuff then nobody never find out about him not even mom and dad it's not mom and dad i'm worried about it's the manager what if the dog starts barking in the middle of the night and wakes everybody up how people like that we could train them not to bother oh sure we could look steve we just can't you know how much trouble dad had to find an apartment that didn't cost a fortune yeah so do you want to get dad in trouble with the manager get everybody mad at us maybe even get us kicked out of here no but do you want the dog catcher to catch frisky and take him to the pound because you know what they do to stray dogs in the pound is that what you want no but i know i can't take care of them all by myself but if you help we can do it at least for the summer come on connie do we try it or not what should steve and connie do why does the apartment have a rule against pets do steve and connie have a right to break that rule not the projector [Music] foreign [Music] yeah cut that out craig you made me miss tough go on beat it i'm practicing i got just as much right to be here as you have well could bother me craig i told you to leave me alone oh come on man i just want to play a little basketball great why don't you okay give me the ball oh no if you want to play get your own ball this one's checked out to me but i like this one yeah get it out back try and make me i think you're so tough huh cut that out i'm warning you [Applause] [Applause] hey quit that okay let's break it up come on get up come on let's go get up all i was doing was playing a little basketball over there and he had to come back and kick all the ball out i just wanted to play basketball but he was hogging a ball and so i never got a chance so i went out i don't care if craig did start it billy you were fighting too and you know you're not supposed to i had to defend myself didn't i no you could have reported him to me or one of the teachers oh sure have everybody call me a chicken then quicken the guys he hangs around us that'd be picking on me all the time look billy we have a rule against fighting and you're just going to have to obey that rule period maybe that's your rule but it's not my dance he always tells me don't ever take anything from anyone he says the more you let people push around the worse everything will be for you do you know why we have our rule billy so people won't get hurt well yes that's a great part of it but that rules there to protect the smaller kids and the weaker kids from bullying now maybe you can handle craig but what about the kids who aren't able to if we don't help them huh so when you're in school billy you obey our rules and you let us handle situations like this but what if craig comes for me someplace else if he thinks i'm a chicken here he'll chicken everywhere look mr zepeda if i don't take care of myself right here right now i'm in big trouble what should billy have done when craig took the ball away does the school have a right to tell billy not to fight back if someone picks on him whose rule should billy obey the schools or his fathers they didn't tell us to discuss the film but i am stopping the projector and i am actually going to rewind it while we're talking because almost everything i pulled was uh related to it was on film so anyways did that seem kind of fourth graderish to you or was that a little old skewed a little old uh no that seems about right i mean it's uh the need for rules is something that's we that comes up a lot right that's kind of um and that's kind of a trend and any anybody's a parent out there will know this that's kind of a trend that i've noticed in the last cuz i've been a teacher about 13 years and i think right around when i started that there's this trend for schools to have like a an acronym for the the school-wide rules you know and so at my school uh our our motto are our mascots eagles and so we have s-o-a-r and they all stand for four things you know like um i'm of course going to forget all of them but uh own your ow is own your learning and uh s is safety first and r is respect and and uh that way yes and there's there's a lot of emphasis on those the four steps there's a lot of emphasis on those um an explanation of them you know and i like you know that uh who needs rules goes into that i mean you know this whole like rules tell you what to do uh and the emphasis in schools you know in the school that i teach at is more just like well it's to keep us safe there's 700 kids in here and if we don't have rules it's going to be it's going to be a problem right chaos it's more cut more uh practical so um both you and i grew up in ohio i left in the fourth grade and i actually had i was telling uh scott that i actually was in three different fourth grades that's correct which is a social crushing thing to go through but i was in an uh outside of dayton in uh new carlisle okay and where did you go to elementary school uh fairview park ohio so directly west of cleveland all right nice and we were talking about that you were sure that we that you saw films but you can't really remember and that's what i found is it uh you know you were of that time where they were showing the film that was during that time somebody did point out 1972 was the magic age of educational films and i tend to agree because you know i was in the first or second grade and 72 and so it all feels right when i see a film like that and i honestly don't remember films like this i do remember like getting together every friday and we would watch like the red balloon like and or you know some special thing but not like a thing about rules so the question i have for you as a fourth grade teacher is do you have like uh part of your lesson plan set aside to specifically talk about rules or do does it just come up um the standard practice is to like talk about rules um and almost nothing but rules and expectations on day one that's like there's almost no academics happen on the first day of school it's all just and you literally like you take um you take i mean i do and i think most teachers i know do you take your class all over the building and say what are the rules here what are the expectations here and you know go over them and you spend pretty much the whole first day and the standard practices to you know and then i have my class rules which are not exactly the same as the school rules interesting yeah how do you stand on gum um i don't allow it okay i don't make anybody put it on their nose or anything okay yeah yeah and candy um i allow it at snack time okay and uh other special occasions but usually not not just i don't know what else they'd have it but yeah yeah right so snack time is when so snack time is before lunch or after lunch it's before okay we have a late lunch our lunch isn't until like 12 50. okay wow and do you does everybody go to the cafeteria now or traditionally do they go to the cafeteria i know covet has had changed we're still going to the cafeteria um and actually yeah now it's it's pretty much back to normal as far as you know they're allowed to talk they're allowed to have their masks off yeah there's quite a bit quite a long period where they were all facing the same way and they weren't allowed to talk while they ate because they had their mass on and then oh wow so everybody finished eating put your mass on and now you can talk to each other that seems nightmarish for a fourth grader yeah yeah it's hard because that's that's where you get to go wild i guess yeah i mean yeah lunch is the yeah and so the people who worked you know the assistants who worked in the launch room are really they're the real heroes because they really had to deal with a lot of that stuff all right i got uh let me set up another film and i'm going to ask you a question um as i set it up so is there any is there an av geek nowadays in school is there any type of audio visual material that you use and if so do you let a little kid do it or or maybe geeks a dying breed it's it's i mean it's sort of dying i mean it's i know that i mean i mean in one i mean video is way more prevalent as a tool now because it's just so easy how do you play back the video um i they provide me with like i have a big this is new this year actually i had this big super tv in the front of the room i connect my laptop to it i connect uh an elmo to it which is a document projector and um and it's just it's it's a huge part of you know use websites like brainpop junior and flocabulary if anyone wants to look those up they're fun um and they have you know they tie right into the curriculum um but as far as like a a kid being in charge of those kinds of things uh not as much i mean they you still have kids who are library helpers and their jobs involve some tech you know but uh it's mostly just put books away i imagine that in middle school there's more of a thing i know that uh my friend who had a kid in middle school he he they did have a sound crew that would like set up the sound for the talent show and stuff like that and i know in high school like i know they have like a team that does like a broadcast they do a streaming broadcast with cameras oh well yeah and some schools do that ours doesn't do that but we do have my friend teaches at a school that does a daily news broadcast and the kids the kids show up early and they film it and yeah so nice yeah okay well that's tragic it's really tragic that there's going to be a generation moving forward that there's no av geeks there's no kids i mean the idea that there's a library helpers right right because that's ultimately somebody geeks that would they were a glorified library helper go help the library then they would take an av cart to a classroom right and of course they don't call it the library anymore it's the media center ah interesting well we saw the transition of that and we certainly have films about media centers but um yeah uh okay um i got another film so fourth grade what i remember moving to north carolina well one thing big thing i remember is so our snack time you could buy milk all right and for five cents and and most people got chocolate milk and then they had their snack they prayed before before now yeah that was at the time that was weird and my fourth grade brain said is that right is that appropriate i didn't say anything i dare not say anything the other thing that i've mentioned is uh at in new london height new london elementary school it was k through eight okay through yeah eight you know and um i remember the first day we went to gym for pe and half the kids started clogging which is this weird you know it's kind of not weird but it's a southern kind of dance and i was like what is going on they just they prayed for when they had their milk and now they're clogging wow and they invited me to kind of learn but i had no coordination you have to have like wood chews for that or something right no no you don't no i mean eventually you do just practicing the steps you don't need the shoes but i saw a clogger at a super trunk show they they brought a person up and they put down a thing of plywood yeah they mic'd it and clogged oh no it's it's wonderful when you see it and i did i think i actually did see the group do it but i was just like wow i mean you want to feel like not fitting in this culture shock of moving from suburban ohio to and it wasn't that rural but it was like wow i am way in another place clock city glogg city but one of the things i remember about social studies in the fourth grade was north carolina we learned about north carolina history yep and i remember the textbook i had a bunch of kids kind of sitting near the statues of the presidents that were born in north carolina which is at the state capitol and so i found an uh north carolina film that i haven't shown called north carolina state capitol so we'll actually get to see um the uh the statues that i was talking about the other thing that was great is when i got i opened the fan the can up i got this note that was in the can that says the film broke in two places close together at the beginning of the actual film we are so very sorry we did tape it together uh please check all of the film so they apologize for breaking that's so nice that is very nice it's a i don't know how they i i checked the splices i think we're good um but sometimes you don't get a warning and you get somebody had stapled the film together so it's really bad uh but i think we're good all right so this is north carolina state capital enjoy it is a magnificent example of greek revival architecture at its best and that it is almost certainly less changed than any other major civic buildings of its era in this country i'm not a tour guide but i can tell you of how your capital came to be and of the men who fashioned it only these gnarled old oaks and i can look back to remember the original state house that rose here on raleigh's union square that simple brick building with a shingled roof housed most of the government for a generation from 1794 to 1831 then there was the smell of smoke when the state house burned to the ground out of that holocaust our story really begins if my fellow senators will permit me to conclude the general plan of the new building which we should call the capital rather than the state house is to be the same as the former one with such extensions of length and height as may be deemed necessary for the better accommodation of the general assembly remembering and learning from our recent calamity the building shall be built of stone and a roof covered with zinc or other fireproof material what you see at this moment is what your great great grandfather saw with his eyes but first it had to be built a commission was appointed for the purpose it hired as its architect william nichols who had remodeled the state house a decade earlier your planning fee of 350 dollars seems very high mr nichols it is a massive undertaking a grand plan to be sure but i doubt if the appropriation of 50 000 will cover the cost of executing it trouble with the 19th century a dollar doesn't seem to go as far as it once did yes well we're going to have to do something about that construction began in 1833 and with hope and excitement in the air and a cheerful expectant crowd enjoying the holiday atmosphere the cornerstone was laid honored guests and fellow citizens we all this day assembled to assist in laying the cornerstone of an edifice destined to be the capital of a free state built of material almost imperishable may this day usher in a new age of prosperity for our beloved state let us earnestly invoke the blessings of the almighty being without whose aid all the exertions of man are in vain william nichols soon was replaced by the new york architectural firm of town and davis i propose gentlemen of the commission that you add on the east and west wings handsome forticos in the most correct grecian style you'll not neglect the accommodations for the public officers this is a working building you know not just a monument oh we shall neglect nothing we want to create a greek design that is perfect in conception and in execution a temple of democracy the stone came from local quarries the outer walls began to rise but by 1834 dismissals and resignations had left no superintendent of construction on the capitol at the commission's request town hired a young scotsman who was living in new york to take on the job that man was david payton who was destined to become the capital's guiding genius mr peyton i missed the town it appears that since i left raleigh you've persuaded the commissioners to make changes in my plans for the capital i think you are undermining me with the commission so that you can gain their confidence no sir but i want the capital to be perfect peyton had his way for shortly after the commission unanimously agreed to replace the firm of town and davis with one man david payton who guided the construction from 1835 to its completion in 1840 he was unflagging in his determination that the capital be perfect no matter what the cost do you realize mr payton that we've had to re-appropriate funds for this building three time and before we're finished you may have to do it again this is a symbol of the great state of north carolina and the men you elect to serve here deserve surroundings every bit as dignified as the high offices they hold now you see here in the rotunda i opened up the ceiling to let light in from the dome to vade antonio canoe the statue of george washington in light chernobyl would feel the shadow across his grave all the way to italy if we didn't [Music] general george washington in this strange costume and without his distinguishing powdered wig and why is he dressed as a roman soldier i'll tell you why just after the war of 1812 the north carolina general assembly asked former president thomas jefferson to suggest a sculptor the man he recommended was antonio canova of rome to make a statue of this wonderful man it is something i will do with pride i can see it in my mind's eye i will make him a roman general with a tuna tightly it was a beautiful statue mr peyton it's a tragedy it was destroyed in a statehouse fire it can never be restored ah don't be too sure where there's a will you know we want a place of honor ready for the general prophetic words mr payton for in 1970 this marble replica claimed its rightful place in the rotunda one cause of the slow progress senator has been the decision which i urged upon the commissioners to vault these corridors and offices on the first floor with stone but it is very expensive high but it's worth it these stone sealants will help make the villain safe from fire every governor since 1840 has used this office to receive honored guests as a showplace on formal occasions and as a private sanctuary for pondering and dealing with the weighty affairs of state well i must commend you mr payton you have done an excellent job even though it has cost 11 times the original appropriation but the credit belongs to the workers the craftsman it's just these stairs the stone cutters fitted the steps so precisely they need no central support yes they they are beautiful but somehow as as i grow older my enthusiasm for stairs wins they keep getting higher and steeper the third floor is worth the climb the rooms are very fashionable done in gothic taste graphic i thought that was for old cathedrals where the gothic adapted to our times here for example in in a state library room we used native north carolina pine painted and green to resemble and the room for the supreme court is finished in similar fashion oh what a blessing it will be to have all of state government under one roof uh follow me sir i i saved the best for the last that legislators will be the principal tenants of the capital [Music] ah yes the senate chamber you have shown impeccable taste it is splendid since it is the upper house i imagined it might need an extra touch of elegance you better not let any of the house members hear you say that they also vote the appropriations including your salary why not like them as you'll see are both chambers the same size i'll tell you a wee secret the center chamber is a bit smaller i had to bottle the corners for officers it's well disguised it is a beautiful room [Music] i wonder what the future holds for this chamber and our beloved state [Music] the chair recognizes the senator from mecklenburg county mr speaker and fellow senators we are advised by dispatch from washington that president lincoln in reply to the fall of fort sumter before our glorious confederate called for a levy of 75 000 military men to defend the union are we to take up arms against our neighbors friends and family we cannot allow lincoln to take the taxes it is not only the right but the duty of every southerner to press for secession may i point out to my esteemed colleague that i have not yielded before i therefore let the general assembly be adjourned until such time is being made i want to secondly speak up just answer the question we must join south carolina alabama georgia mississippi what happened in the senate wasn't always this exciting it wasn't even always important but session after session for 121 years history was made here sometimes it was made in quiet conversations in the rotunda other times it was in louder tones here in the house of representatives these walls have heard the voices of henry clay andrew johnson zebulun vance charles b acock and a thousand others whose ghosts still linger here and thomas sully's portrait of george washington which was saved from the state house fire still looks on with approval just as he did when the men who gathered here wisely guided the state through a great civil war through the dark years of reconstruction two world wars and the great depression david payton had foresight about the capital he added galleries in both chambers even though they weren't included in the original plan so the legislators as actors at heart could always play to a full house and the public could watch as the state's future was shaped the galleries were full that day in 1961 when the last session of the general assembly was meeting since 1903 there have been five different plans recommended to enlarge or modernize this building but all those efforts failed no north carolinian in his right mind would tolerate anybody doing anything to our capital the plan for the legislative building was approved because it would help preserve the capital but it is with a tinge of sadness that we bid goodbye to this beautiful old capitol building while we have been cramped for space here we have found an atmosphere of togetherness which we will be hard pressed to match in our new legislative building so the legislators left the capitol [Music] but they did not forget it still once in every session of the general assembly they hold a meeting here to remember this place and those who built it to admire the work of the stone cutters who shaped the massive columns of the carpenters who fashioned the doors and woodwork [Music] and the masons whose work is as solid today as in 1840 now as then the granite walls stand against the stone the serene dome glistens in the morning light [Music] the capital has been preserved and honored as a tribute to the era when the craftsman's hands labored with love and to the men who had a dream for north carolina [Music] in the beginning i said i was no tour guide who am i then i am the spirit of the capital its voice and its memory i have shown you the capital hoping to bring you to love its simplicity its symmetry its pristine beauty of balance and lying it is the living symbol of our state be proud of it respect it may it endure till time itself grows old [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] that was quite a shock ending where it's like well that your narrator has been dead for years that's the only interesting part of that film i got to tell you having seen many educational films having you know just panning around an empty building and then having voices narrate over top yeah oh i don't think it's interesting for anybody well that's that's that's that yeah they must have been on a pretty serious string budget [Laughter] the junior league only uh raised so much money um so i saw that ira david wood yeah the third was in there and he is a local acting celebrity he always plays uh ebenezer scrooge in uh christmas carol and his daughter is evan rachel woods who has um actually has a career yeah um beyond north carolina um but uh so you said that the third grade when you were teaching third grade would do a field trip yep so what was that like uh it was inter i mean it was i was it was better for me than the kids i was you know because i'm interested in history and stuff like that so i would ask the docent you know questions and stuff and the kids would ask questions too but um it was you know it's an old building and there's discussion of old things yeah and it gets the kids interest does weighing a little bit yeah so is that kind of the trifecta so they do the capital maybe do the legislature then do the history museum and then do the science museum or those we uh did all the first three we did in the same day yes yeah because they're all like within two blocks of each other so it's really easy to kind of do that um the state capital itself that's where the governor is that's his office but everything else is for tourists uh and occasionally uh people get arrested for peeing on it because it is in very close proximity to uh fayetteville street which uh has well there before covet there were a lot of bars there yep yep and people called it drunk town because there was a lot of uh people getting there uh getting drunk and then you know isaac hundreds tavern yes and then just kind of going everywhere and uh urinating and getting into fights and stuff like that so i remember that the the call for the ordinances yeah yeah yeah so exciting part of it yeah so but everyone saw you'd see you know footage of somebody getting busted like trying to break into capital or peeing on it or any number of things that's what it's all about nowadays downtown raleigh okay so um the whole reason i know you is because of my wife katrina who celebrated her birthday yesterday uh and we will probably have her on next week to help launch the toe tapping tournament uh that we're gonna be doing uh and talking about jingles songs and things like that and i know about you because she saw you uh perform as monologue bombs and she liked what you did so much that she started a record label and you were the first release she started super fan records and put out 2007 2000 wow okay a long time ago yep so anyways um how many years ago two years ago i can't remember how long it was but anyways you occasionally do these releases and i'll actually uh uh bring up the uh uh here is your um bandcamp page up in the upper right hand corner uh and so when you do releases you do these kind of fundraisers where you bring in extra musicians you record it professionally and all this stuff but one of the things you do is uh you'll write a song for a certain amount of money yes that's one of the perks of the crowdfunding that i've offered and this is an example of that song that my wife paid uh to have done for my birthday enjoy i can check that gear in a minute so don't touch anything [Music] hey get down from there now [Music] what if it bumped that control by accident you'd be mincemeat by now what have i told you you don't work on equipment when the engine's running well i told them not to touch anything all right i guess i wasn't thinking you weren't thinking you mean you'll work on engines and machinery and not think of your own personal the book just let me get my tool box and i'll take myself a look i climbed up on a dozier with my mechanics pride said you can keep it running friend while i poke around inside shake hands with danger meet a guy now i used to laugh at safety now they call me three finger joe although i learned a lesson i forgot it soon enough the knicks and burns and scratches showed the young ones i was tough till another morning i was grinding on some steel my other hand got careless and fed my skin into the wheel shake hands with danger step right up and say hello grinding wheels and metal are what made me three fingers [Music] i've seen mechanics burning and i've seen them take a fall just to save themselves a minute i've seen them lose it all i've watched them caught in trouble seen them take a chance which is catchy in its own right but you you bumped it up a notch so we you know while we were listening to it you were telling me stuff and i was um so what style are you singing in you said right the um i had previously with the band uh it tried uh to do riff raff as a vocalist riffraff from rocky horror from our big show right opera what's his name something o'brien richard o'brien pat o'brien right and um uh we just never recorded obviously it was a joke or get given to a certain place and then when we were and i should say greg hyman is the other creative force behind this song because he he's he's actually the he's the man the mastermind he made all the beats um i played the sense and stuff but he made the beats and made the actual recording possible um but yeah the uh we just decided to lean into the effeminate british riff-raff thing and you know there's there's no reason to pronounce dozer dozier yeah that's it's so great fuel and then the disco part like right well in the in the original song there's that part where the only lyric is shake hands with danger and it's just the chords are slightly different and i remember thinking this would be great to just go into like a like a psychedelic freak out you know this this it's the part of the video that if we made its own video it would go into animation right um and i was like and so we just really and i was like there's no it's a different tempo that i have in my mind so greg just made it we shoehorned it in and then the id and we just started layering stuff and that's when the depeche mode ish right harmony vocal came in the poke around inside poke around inside and as i look through the lyrics i'm like what's the most ridiculous lyric to and poke around inside is the one to this day i do use that as an expression like i'll be you know like i'll look into that yeah i'll poke around inside and i love depeche mode and as i was saying to you the only thing i love more than depeche mode is singing like depends you know yeah yeah it's the bands you love the most are the ones you like making fun of no it's great it's such a wonderful so someone compares it to kraftwerk meets rocky horror picture show meets the scissors ah nice so that's you you're just you're pulling from so many different genres it's it that that's the hallmark of a good song so well you know it was one of the more fun ones because i you know we had other people because there was also a level where you could pay for a cover and i i did some covers that were less fun than otherwise just like you know can you do uh oh well she knows uh can you do uh beautiful tonight by eric clapton from my uncle's wedding anniversary excited but this one this one was so much fun to do that literally when we get when we were release coming out when is it going to be available to the public uncertain june probably okay yeah all right so but it's made available to people that contributed to your right the people who contributed already have it and um and we're waiting for uh we're gonna do a release show and and release it probably in june where the place we want to play is um having renovations so they're not open reopen yet so right but yeah it'll it'll be in june but there's plenty of stuff on the bandcamp besides yeah so i have the bandcamp page again you know the url is up here and uh greg guyman made a video but i can't for the life of me figure out how to get to work in um obs so what we're going to do uh talk a little bit about the title and um sure uh this is a song called death kids of the cuyahoga valley and um it's basically just kind of you know i went to a public high school in fairview and there were these kids who came over from a catholic school to our football games that were goths and they were really like the first goths i'd ever seen wow it was very the craft it was very that um and so this is kind of like you know uh a song about three goth kids uh growing up and just ha and and how you find your tribe and then you leave school and you lose your tribe and this kind of like that's how life is and that's kind of and the song is um yeah it's very different from shake hands or dangerous has a kind of a john denver vibe which is not goth or says her sisters but it's it's what it is well yeah and you actually so in in raleigh there's this uh yearly event you know pre-covet called the great cover-up where we would different bands or people would come together and do different things and you did john denver yes which was glorious it was really really good i found out that i was i knew a lot of john denver songs yeah yeah i think we all did if we listened to whatever getting that band together to do that is i mean three of the people in that are in my current full band version and that's the stuff that's going to come out in june oh nice yeah with three of those guys so i think that a great cover-up is going to come back post-pandemic i hope so i talked to some of the people about trying to do that and i actually did a version of the excellent version the butthole surfers with film and it was a chaos but um anyway so we're gonna listen to deaf kids uh uh and um unfortunately i'm gonna have to play it from the mic so we're gonna try not to talk or make sounds while we're listening to it and you wanted to me to show some ohio stuff sure and i was like i don't have any ohio stuff handy but i do have this and this is something i've shown before and i think it it fits because it is this kind of weird thing and and i don't think scott has seen rest of our lives and the black streets it's a little every sunday night out of here [Music] [Laughter] all right that was uh i'll explain to uh scott what that was we were watching that was very lost it was a mysterious film that i got in a box of films i got on ebay uh called ohio vet party oh no ohio power company that party 1950 what is it i can't remember what year it was wow but it was in the 50s 1956. anyway so that was some sort of weird banquet slash initiation ritual into something some glorified hazing wow and so you know goth 1956 it was very yeah yeah the chicken did it i think yes i assume that was chicken yeah it was a rooster yeah walking on a on a guy's bare chest um that's so solid solemn occasion yeah so if you liked uh what you heard i mean you know he's a he's we're lucky to have him in raleigh he's a wonderful uh singer-songwriter that my wife adores and is very smart knows a lot about music much more than i do um but uh you go up to the those is but um that's another way if you want to wait and then buy a bunch of stuff from him and then you also do your own live show occasionally on facebook um you and your brother kind of do a swap where you swap songs back and forth yes um how would somebody be able to find out about that uh you go to facebook and you find our page it's the it's an annoyingly long name where it's the phillips brothers irregular song swap concern yeah yeah don't type all that the phillips brothers a rather song swap concern we do about three times a year and we started because of pandemic and right losing we just i do three songs he does three songs we talk a new banter and that's fun banter is actually fun yeah it's a lot of fun and he's your twin he's my twin so there's there's that too yeah magical
