so so so so what's going on all right sorry about that um yeah hopefully you weren't waiting long in the dark um wow i really love that film all the visualizations circa early 30s um of our planets uh was really great the the giant um stalagmites stock mites you know the giant basically mountains that were these incredible like skyscraper like peaks that was really really really love that um and it's interesting to see what we got right uh in that film and what we got wrong and you know it was actively changing and chances are the people who made this film were not scientists they were just going with uh one of what was the you know what were what was popular culture saying about uh the moon because that's what a lot of these films were these were silent films that were distributed for general uh consumption they weren't specifically educational films um they were called educational films but anyways they were just kind of general looks at science and what was the popular view on particular science topics and sometimes they got it wrong because popular culture was wrong about how they talked about stuff so uh i got a lot of films for you today as always today my um webcam is acting weird well it's not as weird as it was yesterday i'm gonna try to turn off this light so it's not so that seems a little better i don't know now i'm not all sparkly down here for some reason that was the problem with the camera yesterday anyways uh let's uh i gotta film on the telecini back here um it's called uh we got a film set up called learning to be a good sport uh one of the great things about being at the um archive is i can go to the back and pull films that we haven't seen and show them to you live so this is probably the 21st century premiere of this film enjoy [Music] yes [Music] do you like to play games if you do you're not alone almost everybody likes to play games of one kind or another board games playground games sports but no matter what kinds of games they like most people play them for one reason to have a good time to have fun a lot of the fun might come from just playing the game or even from just being with friends but people sometimes get extra fun from a game by winning it that might make you feel good because it tells you that you can do something well [Music] and it might make other people think good things about you too but once in a while you might end up having a little less fun that might happen for instance if you lose a game losing might make you feel a bit sad and might even make you feel left out because the winner gets more attention than you do [Music] losing a game doesn't take much fun away for most people though because they know that with most games you lose sometimes but you also win sometimes and either way it's still fun to play but whether you win or lose a game there is one thing that can really spoil the fun and that is a bad sport what's a bad sport well suppose a person who wins a game brags about it i'm really a good player he'll never be as good as i am and tries to make the person who lost feel bad boy are you a rotten player that person is being a bad sport a winner who is a bad sport can make losing feel really terrible a person who loses this game can be a bad sport too the loser might get mad for instance [Music] or refuse to play anymore or say mean things about the winner i don't want to play with you anymore you're no fun people who do that can ruin the fun for the person who won the game but they usually ruin their own fun too because being a bad sport can make losing seem much more important than it really is there are other kinds of bad sports also like a person who bosses everybody around or a person who tries to keep other people from being in the game [Music] whether bad sports behave badly this way or when they win or when they lose the thing they all do is spoil other people's fun [Music] and no one has the right to do that and to make things even worse bad sports usually spoil their own fun too [Music] if that's what bad sports do what do good sports do simple good sports try to help everyone have fun playing games including themselves as much fun as possible for instance a good sport tries to say nice things about the other players when they do something well in a game [Music] hey that was a good catch but what about when other people don't do well for instance suppose someone misses a fly ball [Music] a bad sport might try to make the person feel bad by blaming or name-calling nice going demi you missed an easy one but the person who missed the catch would already feel bad and that would just make things worse [Music] a good sport would try to make the other player feel better maybe by saying something like it's okay we all miss sometimes this doesn't mean that good sports don't try to do their best they do they just never make winning so important that it takes away anyone's fun if good sports win they have every right to feel good about the things they did well and they give credit to the people who won with them or who helped them win but they don't brag or try to make the losers feel bad instead they remember how it felt when they lost and try to make the players who lost feel better maybe by thinking of something they did well in the game and saying something nice about it you sure got some good hits that way the losing team ends up feeling better no one's fun is spoiled and what do good sports do when they lose everyone loses sometimes and losing can make people feel bad no one has to be ashamed of that the problem is what do you do about it if you don't want to be a bad sport one thing you can do is to think about why you play games in the first place to be with friends to have fun friendship and everyone's fun are always more important than who wins and who loses so think about everyone's feelings and not just your own only do things that will help everyone feel good this means you should act as friendly as you can toward the winners and the funny thing about being a good sport is that not only does it make the other people feel better it makes you feel better at the same time of course when you lose a game you can also make yourself feel better other ways for instance you could think about what you did well during the game and things you could learn to do better next time but how can you learn to play better you might get better just from playing a lot from practice a faster way might be to ask for help so someone can show you whatever you need to know if you don't find that out from one person ask another and another until you do find out [Music] then have someone help you work out a plan for practicing what you learned you'll probably find that the better you are at a game the more you like it and the more you like it the easier it is to be a good sport [Music] but even if you practice you still might not get to be as good as you want to be if you ever get really discouraged maybe you could find someone to talk to about your feelings just having someone listen might make you feel better and the person you're talking with might be able to suggest other things to help but no matter what you do and who you play with it's always a good idea to be a good sport and if there's ever a time when you're not sure how to be a good sport just remember this never do things to make other people in the game feel bad always try to make the other players feel good that way you'll be helping to make every game as much fun as possible for yourself and for everyone else and after all fun is what games are for [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] what's going on all right so animated featuring animals uh and so this is part of the beginning responsibility series um or i think they call it something else but essentially coordinate had this beginning uh responsibility series and um featuring real kids uh interacting and they those were made in the 50s and 60s and this i think is a strategic move to animate it even though it's more expensive to animate it what you can do is these films don't have a lifespan like they can continue being shown even today um because you're not featuring actual people and you're not featuring their clothes you're not showing uh because those go stale after a period of time um kids and adults stop identifying with things that are obviously old and don't you know this film isn't made for me this was made for my parents or my grandparents so it's you know any opportunity to not pay attention to it that's one of the reasons but if you animate it then it becomes this kind of timeless thing that you know the concepts don't change mostly um and so these you know these films could be shown today uh and probably still be relevant or seem to be relevant um you know certainly there's issues more issues today like parents parents who are bad sports and you know how do you reconcile when your parent is a bad sport but uh this one featured animals cartoon animals and i just i think this is a departure from what animals look like when they grow up and so this film made by encyclopedia britannica bridges that gap fills in that information about animals growing up so enjoy so this is a nest of chickens eggs each with a little chick inside one baby chick is breaking out of his shell how hard he works at it he isn't very strong yet but he keeps trying you know all birds hatch from eggs and many other animals do too this baby chick doesn't look like a grown-up chicken does he he's wet and he has hardly any feathers but he can sit up and look around ah mother hen she's been out for something to eat and she's come back to keep her eggs warm and to keep her newly hatched baby chick warm too mother hen doesn't really have to do much for her chicks but she keeps the eggs warm and she will protect the chicks while they're babies more chicks are out of their shells mother hen will see that the chicks get food but not today baby chicks don't eat for a whole day after they are hatched today our chicks are 10 days old the mother hen is leading them outside 10 days old and already they can walk and feed themselves the chicks don't have many feathers yet but they are beginning to grow them how they run for a drink of water and see how well they drink 10 days ago the chicks were still in their shells and now they can drink and eat and walk and run without any help at all watch how they drink first they get a beak full of water then raise their heads high so it can run down their throats for most things the chicks now take care of themselves but mother hen still stays with them to protect them from danger this is another family a mother dog with puppies less than a day old they are getting a meal of warm milk from their mother how small and weak this one is when puppies are newborn they can't do very much to help themselves these puppies want more milk mother is restless but she lets them drink their fill mother has short slick hair and a pug nose but the puppies don't look much like mother yet and they haven't even opened their eyes their eyes will be closed several more days it's two weeks later and puppy's eyes are open he can see a little now mother still stays close by the puppies are growing fast they are beginning to look more like mother but they still can't do much but eat and sleep and they still can't eat like mother does they're a little stronger now they're beginning to crawl around and try their legs but they grow tired very quickly and most of the time they just lie here sound asleep now our puppies are six weeks old they are eating from the bowl like mother mother doesn't watch so closely anymore how much bigger stronger they are they can run about and have a good time and they're looking more and more like big dogs they're beginning to chew on things and play with them they prowl around in strange places and wrestle with anything that is handy they're growing very fast now they have wonderful times playing with each other exercising their fast growing bodies they haven't time for naps and sleep there's too much else to do and too much to see puppies six weeks old can do just about anything they don't need much help from mother anymore remember how helpless they were at first now they can almost take care of themselves this is another baby a little baby calf born just five minutes ago she is still so weak about all she can do is move her head a little the calf is still wet and the mother cow spends a great deal of time licking her mother cow has only one calf to look after so she can watch over it with great care the calf is trying to stand up no no not this time she's still too young and weak her coat is a little drier now it is already beginning to look more like mother's coat later on she'll have horns like mothers too ah another try is standing up it isn't easy for a baby calf that is still only a little more than an hour old but even though she's weak and her legs are wobbly she keeps trying trying trying ah at last standing on her own feet for the very first time mother cow is still smoothing out her baby's coat the calf already looks different from when she was first born and now she is ready for her first food from mother her mother makes it as easy as she can for the little calf the calf can hardly make her way about mother watches while the baby calf nurses the first food from mother will help make the baby calf strong and healthy already she can stand up and walk and find her dinner and only two hours old mother will lie down for a while but she still watches over her baby well someone else is going to lie down too if she can this is just about as hard as standing up for the first time but the baby calf is learning the little calf looks small beside her mother but she'll grow quickly here they are four days later the calf is growing fast she drinks a lot of mother's milk and it's making the little calf stronger how straight and steady she stands already the calf can move around quite well but she still stays in the barn with her mother all the time soon now she'll be ready to go outside to the pasture today all the calves big and small are going out from the barn to the pasture our little calf is going too the calves like being outdoors they are also grown up that they can run as much as they please our little calf runs along with another she is four weeks old this is the first time she has been out of the barn and so we have watched our little calf change only a month ago she was a newborn baby that couldn't stand or walk now she can run and play in the meadow can you remember in what ways the little puppies changed from the time they were born to the time they were six weeks old and can you remember how much the little chick changed from the time he first came out of the egg to when he was 10 days old so there you go there's your live birth um i have other i have human live births but i hesitate uh to show them um there has been talk about doing an av geeks after hours and so we might i might look to do that in may um and we'll go somewhere that um won't be flagged on youtube or facebook and some private place where it'll be okay to show a vagina and maybe a penis and some other themes that aren't appropriate for general audiences anyways where are we um a little oh yeah got a film set up here in the back i just watched a little bit of the beginning of it and i don't know it might be there's a song at the beginning which might be a good uh candidate for the toe tapping tournament uh which we were going to be doing um probably starting next week we'll start showing uh some songs from uh some of the films that we've watched we'll let you vote on them and um we'll pick our top four and then our top four will take on found footage festival's top four and we will crush them again we will absolutely crush them um i i think they've already shown their hands as far as uh which uh participants uh or candidates for their toe tapping tournament um we'll be competing against and i think we can slay them so anyways uh this next film is um about paul bunyan and has like i said a good song if you think it's good enough to be included in our um toe tapping tournament uh list then please comment accordingly in the comments all right here it is paul bunyan enjoy what have we here nearly half a hemisphere close to coast countryside scattered with diversified artifacts [Music] when you think of a nine-pound hammer or a big blue ox named dave you will think of men of mighty men a mighty needs and maybe you'll catch sight of a lonely you're planting apple trees along a trail or here baits master shout timber thereby hangs a tail thereby hangs the tail [Music] [Applause] foreign [Applause] [Music] yes siri this is how they cut them down nowadays with them newfangled chainsaws any 250 pound weakling can do it now in the old days it took a real big man with a big axe to bella tree there was some pretty big ones back then too biggest of them all was paul bunyan by nelly he was a bigon [Music] almost as tall as the stories they tell about him he even started out big but when it was nothing but a snip of a baby he wouldn't fit indoors so his papi built an outdoor cradle for him so heavy when paul got inside it deaded the earth every place for miles around was uphill people got so tuckered out walking uphill all the time they floated the cradle out to sea well the land leveled off but when baby paul rocked his little self to sleep he made 70 foot waves where you can see him to this day 70 foot tides coming in on the bay of fundy up there between maine and nova scotia of course with a start like that you'd probably expect him to grow up to be a mighty big fella well he did so big he could put sugar on the clouds and eat them like cotton candy well when you're a big man you want big things to do and what could be bigger than being a lager i mean logan big logs [Music] he started out in the east because most of the united states was there at that time in the forests of maine had him a huge ox called babe which was blue that's right blue that critter was so much ox all together it took four men standing close together the better part of a day to see from the tip of one horn to the tip of the other [Music] well it was hardly ever the same day at both ends of her at once his first job was to log a whole stand of timber in the main hills that was when he put together his famous logan crew there was the seven brothers who could swing axes so fast they was invisible brimstone bill whose voice was so loud he could sink a mountain with a whisper hot biscuit slim the cook the only man who could bake up a biscuit large enough for paul bunyan to bite holy the big swede best blacksmith around but who was so dumb when he dropped his anvil on his foot he couldn't remember the word ouch well paul loaded up babe and headed north now that enormous animal was so weighted down every step she took she sank to her knees in solid rock the holes later filled up with water and they became all them lakes maine has speckled with you don't believe me check your map they set up camp and commence to toppling trees cut down them trees so fast they didn't have time to go crash of course paul being thrifty saved up all them crashes and then set them loose the following fourth of july they finished up in maine and set out west to log the wilderness that covered the dakotas holy the big swede made paul the most gigantic saw you ever seen had more teeth than a herd of crocodiles eating its way through a comb salesman's convention paul needed flatland to try it out in by this time paul bunyan had the most tremendous lumber camp ever was so many loggers there weren't names enough to go around to feed them flapjacks at breakfast hot biscuits slim wielded a skillet so huge six platoons of crooks helpers had to skate around on it on slabs of bacon to grease it up made flapjacks so big that slim used dynamite to turn them over once paul and his crew got started the camp bookkeeper johnny inkslinger had his work cut out just keeping track of all that cut timber he had to hitch his pen to a big barrel of ink with a hose on it and kept all the bucket brigades from the towns of fargo aberdeen sioux city and bismarck working full time just fill in that barrel to get the timber to the lumber mills all needed a log run so we dug the mississippi river see for yourself it's right there between the alleghenies and the rockies which are nothing more than the earth paul dug out to form the riverbed hmm let's see that was the same year as the winter of the blue snow now that was the god-darnedest thing you ever did see snow started falling like usual only it was blue blue snow drifts same colors babe who blended right in with them poor critter all her life she stood out like a sequoia in the desert now nobody could see her at all she wasn't the only one who was blue them loggers was pretty sad too they couldn't do no cutting and all that blue snow they was homesick for the white kind [Music] now paul knowed he had to cheer him up so he set out west with his invisible ox when they got to the pacific he found that was frozen so he kept going right on china there he found pure white snow which is more proof if you need it that what i'm telling you is true as there has never been any blue snow in china anyway paul stuffed his pockets full of that snow and then him and babe came back to camp each and every one of the loggers got a white snowball is a christmas present and they kept him too well even today if you meet a logger who says he was with paul bunyan that terrible winner asked to see his white snowball if he was really there he'll pull that snowball right out of his pocket and show it to you when they was finished logging the dakotas there wasn't so much as one tree left mary a stick the area whisker if you've ever seen dakota you'd know it's that way to this day paul stomped every tree stump flattened to the ground so folks could come out there and farm and then he packed up camp and headed west it was a long trying trip across deserts so empty there wasn't even any sand in him but paul got so tired when let his axe drag and it cut this gully now known as the grand canyon well they finally reached the north woods a logger's paradise trees so tall it took two weeks of fallen for him to finally hit the ground it was so cold up there the cook house fire froze hot biscuit slim had to thaw it out in the sun every morning where your very words froze in the air about that time the first chainsaws came into camp and tractors too paul was so disgusted with all that scissifying stuff one day he packed up babe and headed north it was the last any of us ever saw of him i'd always wondered what became of him till just the other day i saw them pictures the astronauts brought back from the moon it was logged clean as a hungry jack's dinner plate oh wow i muted it and then immediately started coughing my body nuts anyways uh yeah that was uh that was pretty great um i was hoping there was going to be more singing throughout and not just that intro but it seems like most of you were kind of meh about the um about that intro song whether that should be a candidate for the toe tapping tournament um so all right i get it i kind of liked it but you know duet kind of nice but and not always uh folks don't always like it all right this next film is about how to be a nurse practitioner and this film was super red and we weren't able to get it all um the colors are going to be very muted we brought the red down because everything was like blood red and that's what happens is sometimes the film uh dies fade and so you're left with just red so your greens and your cyans and your blues go away and you're just left with a bright ruby red image and depending on which scanner we use we can sometimes pull that color out and we can balance it and get it looking more normal probably not 100 percent what it was but we can get it to where it's not in amber vision all right so here's nurse practitioner enjoy [Music] okay it's down here can you read that i hope okay thank you okay bye bye see you [Music] can we measure your head yeah 45 centimeters okay let me see your eyes tail there as a pediatric nurse practitioner here in the clinic i take care of children doing a lot of things as a nurse same thing that doctors do doctors still continue to do but more and more have been given the responsibility to nurses who have extra education and we do physical examinations of children and physical assessment of whether they're growing and developing correctly and telling mothers and fathers you know what's wrong with their children how to care for them and how to take care of simple childhood illnesses that other times have been cared for by doctors and are still careful by doctors and other practices with god completely now we look at your throat yes yeah can you look at your throat [Music] [Music] you want to walk to mom let me see if you have straight nice straight feet move to mommy dale come on oh very good okay yes you're all whale very good today you get your shot then for the measles in the months yeah there's no reaction right away to those she's going to get a reaction it'll do in about a week a week 10 days to the measles part of it what kind of a reaction fever sometimes sometimes even a rash like the mild form of the measles are gonna be doing anything special and we almost have to be mrs mahaffey called this one a little while ago and she's got completely confused in a way too she thinks he has congestion in his lungs not in his ears she says his coughing spells are getting much worse but not in severity just a little more often and she's more worried that he's going to rupture something more than anything yeah she said because it cost me she's not bringing up any mucus or anything i told her to continue on the activity for at least another couple of days i kind of like to think doctor and nurse are side by side rather than on a run because the most important person in treating an illness or any condition is the patient and you have a health team to treat people with i don't think one is higher than the other and that the patient is the highest the person you're taking care of it doesn't interfere with his sleep that much does he get burned no he does vomit but no mucus just he just coughs himself i guess he like gags himself okay [Music] very good yes okay go get your shot momma get you dressed yeah okay one alley coming up dana look at mommy um that's all you were very good [Music] i enjoy working in ukai which is a small town 10 000 people in that you have a little more freedom around you to mingle with the people and you get to know your patients and you get to see how they really live and how you can tailor their character their way of life and also the it's not the hustle and bustle of a city which at times i do miss but i think there's a greater need for nurse practitioners in the country in a country or rural setting where there are not enough usually doctors to go around often probation [Music] [Music] usually the day starts with a visit to the hospital and talking to mothers of the newborn babies that are there [Music] [Music] the liver just can't do the job it's supposed to the first few days and i think there's something in the mother's breast milk that makes um the liver not do the job it's supposed to get a little bit more yellow for us with babies then i come out to the office and we have telephone hour in our office from nine for an hour in the morning at an hour in the afternoon which i see no patients who are free to answer the phone for any questions parents may have the cost spasms gotten less in any way so go ahead and continue that for at least a couple more days and then give us a call back but if you should get a temperature call back sooner okay [Music] and then i see patience in the morning after that and in the afternoon after telephone hour are you breastfeeding him or bottle success how often does he eat [Music] very irregular because yesterday he had about 11 uh it was about 11 30 he ate and then um he slept mostly afternoon didn't need to get until real late yesterday he's going to stay if he's going to sleep longer than three or three and a half hours four hours wake him up and put him to breath at night leave him be yeah but during the day wake him up he needs to eat when he's tiny was he this yellow when he left the hospital i think he's gotten darker and more yellow since this is very normal doctors and nurses are not always the person who can do the most for the patient a lot of times it's the parent and if the parent is educated enough in the right aspect of the medical problem that they can you know treat their child probably better than a nurse and a doctor can at times they know how their child responds to different situations and it leads into the aspect of in this country of taking care of people and helping them prevent disease rather than taking care of diseases and this is the way medicine should start thinking and health of preventive diseases rather than just coming in to the doctor when you're sick coming to make sure that you're well and for advice and counseling this is health and health isn't just being sick it's being well and how to stay well [Music] in becoming a nurse practitioner i would advise any person who's interested to go into a nursing school and then in some schools it will become an integral part of the program right now it's an extra added course but then i think there's some programs that are beginning to put in the senior year of the of the collegiate schools of nursing but i think as a nurse practitioner for the first time i'm using every bit of knowledge i learned in the four years of nursing school that i went to and i'm using every bit of it from every angle [Music] i've always worked with children since i got out of nursing and i will always work for children i relate to them a lot better than i do with adults to carry out the philosophy of medicine that i have of letting people take care of themselves you have to start at an early age i feel education of the children is the most important part of it [Music] do [Music] [Music] sorry i took a big mouthful salad and then suddenly the film ended i'm like crap um anyway so that was a smaller educational film company pelican educational films i've never really heard of them before and so it's kind of an interesting look at nurse practitioners and i'm guessing uh for those maybe looking to oh that was great sorry that was looking to uh pursue that career and certainly nowadays those practitioners are super important because they are often the ones that you see and prescribe your medicine so you don't have to see a doctor so anyways uh thanks everybody for tuning in today thank you uh william and mitch for um the coffee it's always ex
