so so so okay i'm hoping i'm back if you can see me um let me stop this hold on all right um so uh there were there i was showing you this thing and then obs crashed just straight up crashed uh i was trying to adjust the color correction on the webcam and everything just went so anyways uh before that you guys thought that there was a technical problem but it wasn't essentially where is it all right this is a reel of film that came from a what we call a title house they printed uh the title the dedication to st stephen j o'donnell um and so it was just that over and over and over and over again um and uh it was silent and so this would be part of lab materials uh basically someone would uh hire a company that had that made uh titles and then they would um print let's see them that helps yeah this webcam's acting really weird today and i'm afraid if i fuss with it it's gonna crash again so um yeah so that would have been edited into a piece uh finished piece and so that was probably for some film about a winery and the person who participated in the project passed away and so they were honoring him but yeah that's what we find sometimes a b geeks is the same thing over and over again what was it i think it was part three which was basically a countdown and then it said part three and then there was a countdown as part three etc um that's what we watch sometimes here uh anyways uh and futz is spelled f-u-t-z i think that's how i spell it anyways uh let's learn how to make handmade lantern slides enjoy big lantern slides are inexpensive easily made teaching tools here are six of the most common types etched grass and colored crayon gelatin coated glass with india ink frosted plastic and pencil translucent paper and india ink cellophane typed with carbon and opaque paper silhouettes primary and kindergarten teachers find silhouette slides especially suited to their grade levels use small sharp scissors to cut out the silhouettes after the silhouette has been cut out fasten it to a piece of grass with glue place the glue in the center of the silhouette so that none of it creeps over the edges cover with another piece of glass and bind the ends with a temporary binding to make projection easy paper tape can be used for binding cut off the desired length and dampen slightly use just enough water to make sure that the tape is sticky otherwise the water will creep between the two pieces of grass and shown projection place a thumb spot on the lower left hand corner of the binding to aid in placing the slide correctly in a projector silhouettes can also be projected in a hinged binding sheets of colored cellophane add to the interest of the slide and cut down illumination of the background silhouette should be made with clear outlines another very simple slide is one made with glass marking or ceramic pencil on a clean piece of grass the grass is placed over the drawing the picture is traced with a ceramic pencil which must be quite sharp use a firm pressure do not remove the pencil from the grass until one line is completed otherwise the wax will pile up at these points many things make good silhouettes pictures from magazines opaque paper and flat objects such as leaves they can be projected in a hint binding simply two pieces of grass fastened together on one side silhouette slides are the simplest of all to make primary children enjoy making them from opaque paper and magazine pictures keep the outline simple so that the silhouette can be identified the elementary teacher will find many learning situations in which the handmade slide can make a definite contribution for example language arts and social studies it's well to build up a file of pictures for magazines and supplementary reading material an easy way to check the dimensions of the pictures to use a margin guide the same size as a slide with a half inch frame to make an etched glass slide place the glass etched side up on the picture use a margin guide a medium hard drawing pencil is best for initial tracing sharpen with a rotating motion on fine sandpaper wipe the point free of dust this will keep pencil smudges off of the plate place a blotter under the hand to protect the plate from fingerprints or smudges make the initial tracing with very light clean lines if too many errors are made best thing to do is to wash the grass and start over after the tracing is completed check it over white paper the very light lines can then be darkened and shading added the shading is applied with soft brushing strokes with the hand moving in the same direction the best way to check the slide is to project it frequently handle the plate by the edges at all times to protect it from fingerprints the tracing should be light enough so that the outlines can be modified then pencil shading added to complete the slide color used correctly adds interest to a slide it's easily applied with special slide crayons to begin center the plate on the picture use a margin guide to protect the plate from fingerprints the tracing is made very light because this slide is to be colored with slide crayons this lessens the possibility of mixing pencil dust with the colors the tracing is checked by holding it over white paper coloring as well as shading can be done over this reflected light the slide plate is now ready for coloring a homemade light box which provides a lighted working area is good device to use when coloring the coloring is done with special slide crayons which produce a soft clear color when projected the color is applied with a brushing motion using even strokes which move in the same direction and touch or overlap if spaces are left the white light will shine through and give a distracting effect when the slide is projected the crayons must have a sharp point use a clean piece of sandpaper for each color and sharpen with a rotating motion wipe the points free of dust the color is applied right up to the pencil lines to heavy crayon application will project as shiny streaks black pencil shading over crayon deepens the tones and adds much to the drawing this shading is done is the last step a slide that is used many times should be protected with a permanent binding use gum tape fasten one end of the table gun side up cut off a piece about 18 inches cover the drawing on the etched grass with a piece of clean glass hold the two pieces firmly together oh um that film print has seen better days um now i'm going to sneeze man there's all sorts of crazy stuff happening now hold on excuse me all right so is that any weirder god i don't know what this webcam is doing right now very frustrated anyways uh so we have not shown that one before but we have shown one uh called photographic slides for instruction that was made by indiana university uh this one i'm not sure who made it uh because the you know the title and the in the end are clipped we don't get to see was this coronet but this is you know this is like an early prototype to powerpoint that powerpoint is exactly what this was uh what this replaced and so it went from lantern slides to transparencies uh and opaque projectors to um um powerpoint uh so there you go there's your lineage this is the great grandpa all right uh i have another film set up on the telecity behind me um and this is pretty exciting i haven't seen this one i don't think or at least it's been a while so this is let's visit a shopping center enjoy [Music] this is a shopping center a shopping center is made of many stores close together [Music] all around the stores is a big parking lot some of the stores are large and some are small in these stores people can buy most of the they need during the day many families come here to do their shopping but early in the morning before the stores are open the shopping center looks empty [Music] yet some people are at work one of the shopping center guards checks the doors to make certain they are locked a sweeper cleans the parking lots and sidewalks each morning another worker washes windows so the stores will be clean and attractive trucks arrive early too they bring many different things to be sold in the stores all the different things the trucks bring are called merchandise because the shopping center has many kinds of stores the trucks bring many kinds of merchandise when the merchandise is delivered to the stores it is usually kept in a store room until it is needed then a clerk puts price tags on the merchandise and it is placed on shelves in the store in the florist shop the florist trims the flowers then he places them in water and puts them in a special cooler in the store where they will stay cool and fresh all day in the shopping centers supermarket workers are also getting ready for the day's business a worker stamps the price on each can before placing it on the shelf in other parts of the store workers are busy putting out fresh vegetables and fresh meats for the customers in a small room at the rear of the supermarket another worker trims and cleans fruits and vegetables after the stores are open many people come to shop the collins family comes to this shopping center because it is near their home they like to shop here because there is plenty of free parking space near the stores and because here they can buy most of the things they need while johnny and mrs collins are shopping mr collins is going to buy medicine in the shopping center's drugstore the medicine will be prepared by this man he is a pharmacist this note is written by a doctor it tells the pharmacist what kind of medicine mr collins needs the pharmacist prepares the medicine very carefully people depend on the pharmacist to give them the medicine their doctor wants them to have meanwhile johnny and mrs collins are going to shop in the big department store many kinds of merchandise are sold in the department store this is the children's clothing department mrs collins will buy johnny a sweater here many people work in the department store a sales lady helps mrs collins pick out the sweater next johnny and mrs collins visit the toy department each department in the department store is like a separate store now mr collins is going to buy some flowers in the florist shop florist shop like most of the other small stores in the shopping center sells only one kind of merchandise often these small stores have only one or two people working in them while mr collins buys flowers johnny and mrs collins are going to buy food in the supermarket in this store customers wait on themselves they pick out the things they need then they go to the check stand the checker looks at the price of each item the cash register shows the price of these items then it adds them all up to show mrs collins how much to pay the checkers helper puts the groceries in bags the collins family shops in the shopping center because it is near their home they like to shop here because there is plenty of room for parking near the stores [Music] and because here in one place they can buy almost everything they need [Music] shopping centers people who work in them are an important part of many communities [Music] i uh love me i'm going to try to turn this on see what happens is that it's the shirt's so weird anyways um big fan of uh films about 60s shopping centers i mean i having grown up in the late 60s um it just you know just brings this thing right here kind of tickles this part of my body that nostalgia um and it was upside down because uh the callaway difference dedication was actually upside down uh and instead of having to rewind it i just quickly inverted the image and then promptly wasn't able to invert it um in time so there you go that's what happened uh i blame pollen uh for all the technical problems today it's causing obs to be weird and crash it's causing the webcam to crash causes me to sneeze occasionally it's making all of our cars in raleigh north carolina green just not not great don't like it but what i do like is learning about number systems and that's what this next film is about so enjoy one two hello jack three what are you doing oh i see you are counting your toy scouts it seems like a big job to count them all why don't you try an easier way try putting them first in groups of ten ones count each group of ten separately and then count the ones left over one two three four five six seven eight nine ten that's the idea well go on one two three four five six seven eight nine ten one two hmm if only my toy scouts were alive like real boy scout and if they could only form patrols like they do in a parade johnny dan all set yep fine well it's time to start bob assemble your troop in patrols of 10 for the review we'll be ready in a minute fine then march past the tally board right here all right there jack sir climb up there and make a record of the number of scouts as the patrols march past yes sir this will make the records easier to keep i'll make marks on this side for the groups of tens and marks on this side for the ones county patrol one two three four five six seven eight nine ten ten scouts in this patrol what patrol of ten this mark stands for that patrol of ten scouts one two three four five six seven eight nine ten another patrol of ten another patrol of ten this mark stands for the next patrol of ten scouts one two three four five that's all only five scouts in this patrol five single scouts i'll have to make a mark on this side for each single scout one two three [Music] four [Applause] five five single scouts well jack how many scouts are there in troop two two tens two five ones is five let's see 25 well done call in troop 12 and ask the patrol leaders to form patrols of 10 scouts yes sir hey jim john paul steve get your patrols together each patrol should have 10 scouts one patrol of 10 scouts one patrol of ten another patrol of ten one patrol 10 scouts another patrol of 10. one patrol town another patrol of ten one two three four four ones one two three four that's all in this troop how many one two three four four tens and one two three four four ones four pins and four ones that is 44. that's right one patrol of 10 scouts one tan one patrol again another patrol of ten point patrol 10 scout one ten one patrol again banana patrol of tan one patrol of ten scouts another patrol of ten one two three four five six seven eight nine nine scouts five pins and nine ones that is 59. sorry dan i'm a little late may i enjoy my patrol all right fall in hey jack one more man in the last patrol one more here makes ten hmm nine's out here's ten tens go on the other side of the sheet ten ones are one ten so that means that there are six tens instead of five tens and no ones at all 610 that's what it is now thank you jack come down now all the scouts are counted well jack isn't it easy to count your toy scouts when you group them in tens and ones six tens six tens are sixty you've learned how to count by using groups of ten wouldn't you like to find out how well our friends have been watching us can do it how about it stop now let's all count the toy scouts that are still on the table how many tens how many ones has jack counted right four tens and eight ones yes four tens and eight ones are 48. well children how many toy scouts has jack left for us to tally take a good look how many tens how many ones did you hear what our friends are telling us three marks on this side for tens and seven on this side for ones three tens and seven ones how much is that 37 you are doing very nicely how about some more what did you say jack all right how many has he left on the table forest account this time how many tens we heard you two tens is right how many ones no ones is right two tens are twenty stop jack there are ten in a large group and how many more 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 1 10 1 two three four five six ones sixteen sixteen is right isn't it one ten and six ones are sixteen thank you jack for keeping score for us you'll make a good scout someday thank you friends for helping us um so that was pretty great uh i like taking that footage out of context um it's it's really it feels like it has something has to happen to that footage um so thank you mitch for coffee coffee is a great way to uh support us also hitting like thumbs up subscribe and and telling other people what we do that's that's great but right now let's find life [Music] um [Music] [Music] not me [Music] [Music] do do [Music] so [Music] hahaha [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] oh [Music] please [Music] so [Music] [Music] hmm [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] that film obviously should be called let's manhandle nature um beautiful footage you know uh no narration that's definitely a 70s thing early 70s thing um great soundtrack but oh boy there was a lot of picking up and touching and all that stuff and don't necessarily want to know what happened to those animals and insects after the fact and how many didn't survive in other footage anyways got one last film i thought that was gonna be the last film but it was short so here's a film about california missions not emissions missions enjoy [Music] the first real pioneers of what is now the state of california were the franciscan friars on foot and with slow food means of transportation these earnest kindly emissaries of the church and civilization defying dangers established a line of missions which stretched for almost 700 miles for more more than a century and a half the picturesque edifices remained the greatest historical landmarks of the golden state the friars came from old mexico under the leadership of the indomitable father juniperocera in san diego bay on july 16 1769 father sarah assisted by don gasper de portola the first governor of california held the ceremony founding san diego de alcala the first of these missions and claiming the country for the church and carlos iii king of spain today the crumbling edges of its pearly white walls give an even richer beauty to the scene and the ancient tower bells though silent seem to echo the long forgotten music which called to worship the converts of those friars who are so unforgettably perpetuated in memory and the missions they built [Music] although this unexplored land was fabulously known to the spaniards as island of amazon's the terrestrial paradise to journey through the countrymen constant hazard of being massacred by hostile indians but neither danger nor difficulty restrain these holy men in their peaceful conquest [Music] it was less than a year later that a second mission on el camino real or the king's highway was founded this was san carlos boromeo on monterey bay the present structure was built five miles from the site originally selected this became father sarah's headquarters and here he is buried [Music] in their further journeys little wonder it is that the pioneering fires were loath to leave this mission in the pleasant valley of carmel [Music] san gabriel archangel not far from los angeles is known as the queen of missions it was once surrounded by a stockade to protect its inhabitants from the marauding bands of savages drama romance and poetry stinlinger at san gabriel now the scene of the famous mission play [Music] it was from san gabriel mission on september 4th 1781 that a small detachment of soldiers priests and 44 settlers formed a procession to dedicate formally the tiny plaza of a new town and named it pueblo [Music] san juan capistrano is considered one of the most beautiful of all these missions the first attempt to establish it ended in failure and when finally completed an earthquake which occurred during a religious service shook the beautiful building into ruins and killed many of the congregation [Music] there were times when the franciscan fires were dependent upon the military to protect their missions from being destroyed and themselves from being wiped out although much of their traveling was done alone and unarmed their object was to make friends of and convert the native inhabitants rather than to subjugate them with force and violence [Applause] [Music] the santa barbara mission was named in honor of the feast of saint barbara having been founded on that religious occasion the date was december 4th 1786 within a year a chapel was built as well as a house for priests quarters for married and unmarried men a granary and a kitchen from this date on the mission grew larger and the community rapidly prospered it became the center of an aristocratic spanish colony by the end of 1807 there were 252 of what might be called california's first bungalows surrounding the church [Music] [Applause] mission of san juan bautista was founded on june 24 1797 on the day of the feast of saint john the baptist it took hundreds of workers 15 years to complete the church and other buildings in its tall tower still hangs the chime of nine bells which sent their music out over the surrounding wilderness and in the big courtyard are interesting relics of long past days and modes of occupation the church proper is sufficiently large to accommodate a thousand worshipers it is said that an early padre of san juan once set an organ on a prominence overlooking the valley and began to play when the indians first heard the strange sweet music they fell upon their faces in fear finally approaching to gather and raptured about the friar who played for an hour and then preached to them [Music] the mission of san fernando ray near los angeles was dedicated to san fernando the third king of spain checker shaded cloisters look onto patio gardens that are remindful of gethsemane [Music] in the midst of this quiet sanctimony stands a statue of friar junipero whose accomplishment was far more than religion and who built in california even a greater monument than any and all of his missions even the soft breezes in the palms and narrow branches seem to join in the tdm of praise to those patriarchal sages who pioneered the golden state and no matter what one's creed may be respect and reverence is undeniable [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] san luis ray founded in 1798 was once the richest and most prosperous of all these missions but today little is left of the original palatial structure except crumbling pillars and broken arches its main facade born on 32 great square pillar supporting arches is little more than a white skeleton of its former beauty padre perry the friar who designed the buildings and supervised this mission labored for 30 years to build a tiny empire in the wilderness [Music] its bells ring no more but the padre and his work are not forgotten near the ruins of the original mission has been erected an attractive building in keeping with the architecture of the old ones this is now appropriately used as a college for the training of missionaries for the field [Music] the work they set out to do now completed stands throughout the great state of california as an everlasting monument to father junipero serra and his courageous followers of the cross [Music] well yeah there you go california missions uh by van buren films um that probably would have been a theatrical short uh and also was distributed obviously for um
