so so so so so so so of course the second i turn away film ends um and then earlier like restream just decided to start streaming like what i was doing in prep early um yeah like uh i'm skip alzheimer and welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we have all sorts of technical bra stuff going on and uh we're back in the archive after two weeks um one week me being sick where my my voice was just going away because of my coughing my bronchitis and then um last week uh what's going on it's weird okay i'm trying to adjust things i still have a little but um i have cough drops and stuff but anyways uh we're back um i hope that you got to tune in on friday to see why i was in new york uh and to meet my partner in that project the kim's video opening project um nick brewer and uh we had some fun showing you around that space um i was surprised it worked because the internet was not so great that that space is four stories underground um so anyways we're back which means that we can watch films that i have up on the see i can't even remember which way the screen is now uh up on the telecini uh this film i'm hoping the audio is working right i'm gonna give it a shot but this film is it's clipped but it's called choosing for happiness and i don't know if you notice but it's not on a reel it's actually on a core so i have to use special platters to make sure that the film dish doesn't fall off so anyways here's choosing for happiness and we'll see if the audio works so enjoy i wasn't so easy to push anymore i didn't feel i needed her advice i didn't really resent it maybe it was that course in family relations last spring i learned that it's a good idea to try to change yourself first if there has to be a change changing somebody else is practically impossible yet i must admit i was curious to know all about eve and he was more than willing to talk tell me about the boys you've met you were saying something always happened well whenever i meet a boy i start asking myself is he right for me and i don't know mary i really don't know there was one you wrote about his name was alex i think why did that fall through that's justin riley's one afternoon with a gang i'd heard of him but i'd never met him he was a football star i liked him and he liked me right from the start we found plenty to talk about and neither one of us could figure out how we've been the campus for two years without ever meeting before he was lots of fun we decided to spend the afternoon together it turned out that was just the first of a whole slew of afternoons he was really sweet and oh well just nice to be with i guess i was a little proud too that a varsity football player was paying so much attention to little me well as i said eve went on we saw quite a bit of each other but after a few months his popularity got annoying we were never really alone and he never stopped worrying about his appearance did his collar look better buttoned or unbuttoned well i could have been wearing a little number by dior and he wouldn't have noticed it but if there was a new girl in the place he was all eyes and smiles it wouldn't make any difference what she looked like as long as she had some simpering crack to make about how well he'd played on saturday i began to catch on that those forward passes could be used two ways and finally i had more than i could stand and i told him exactly what i thought of him he didn't take it as well as he took compliments said i didn't appreciate the importance of his career career indeed whoever heard of a wolf with a career and then there was arthur either was different awfully nice but awfully different the gang called him the brain because he was such a whiz at math and he was always ready to help a friend you're different from other girls that's what you think you're smarter you're almost like a man oh no i'm very much the woman i don't think of you that way at all i don't get you at all i know you think math is exciting but you really ought to get yourself straightened out you'd be surprised how many things are just as exciting as math now really you don't think there's anything wrong with me oh forget it i've got to go now we'll talk about some other time but there never was another time said eve i was just another problem to him and then there was steve steve was eve's boyfriend for a whole spring term he was cute she said and really romantic he had his own workshop where he made boats and things eve used to come by to pick him up after her come on steve you're waiting for you oh i don't know eve why can't we just hang around here for a while and we can listen to some good music it'll be fun is that your idea of fun i want to be with people oh what's wrong with that steve nothing oh come on you'll have a good time hurry up and get on your shore he never wanted to leave that old carpenter shop i tried to get him out once in a while really i did you know eve you can't make a man over like you do a room but mary don't you see what steve needs is not you but somebody else you know what i bet you'd like him say that's a terrific idea come on we'll go over there right now right now sure i thought it might be good to see some of these boys for myself besides steve sounded nice and i thought i'd better begin to make some friends on the campus sure enough we found him at the old stand lost in thought and a pleasant job it didn't take long to get the introductions over it seemed like a nice place with a real atmosphere of its own but evidently not one that eve liked especially but eve is like that jumpy full of energy she never could sit still for long [Music] i'm different like steve i find it relaxing to keep away from groups sometimes and work out my troubles with my hands i got along well together though i could see he wondered how a friend of eves could be like me he'd been thinking there was something wrong with him because he couldn't dance to eve's fidgety tune as a matter of fact steve was not the boy for me either even though i liked him a lot it would be too much like spending time with a twin brother we're too much alike i told all this to eve the next day when we had a riding date it was saturday and over at noon now you see what i mean mary all these boys are nuts in their own way they all have something i like but it's only one side of their character but the something eve liked about a boy can't be separated from the rest of his personality i couldn't make her understand that but i did stick my neck out a little way i think it would do you a lot of good to meet someone you can't push around you mean someone who pushes me around no i don't i mean someone who's not afraid of you that's just like john he thinks he's tough i can't stand the sight of him you're sure well here's what happened last week we drove out to the country together we had a wonderful time i can't remember when i've had so much fun i guess we just clicked then just as we were getting to know each other better he says let's go home was i mad here i was thinking he really cared and he does a thing like that but why did he do it oh well you see it wasn't his car he promised he'd be back with it before six now look if you can say if you want to i'm not going to keep george waiting so george is more important to you than i am is that it that's not the point george can do without the car for once if you really cared about me you'd stay george or no george why not well i won't i'm not going to let george down even for you start sprouting wings if you don't watch out move over boss here's considerate look who's talking why someone ought to take you across his knee and give you a good spanking might make you more human maybe you're the one to do it maybe but i doubt it he sounds like the best of all are you serious why no you were wrong how do you make that out well just think about it for a second what were you asking him to prove that he liked me what's wrong with that that would never satisfy you why not about what you really wanted what was it then you wanted him to do what you told him to do it's what you always want eve that's terrible i thought i'd gone too far but now that she knew what she was doing she could decide for herself if she wanted to change that's always the hard thing to learn that if any change is possible it must be changing yourself you have to take other people as they come or else leave them alone i started thinking about eve's boys had the same problem steve liked eve and he liked his hobby too but he couldn't have both it would be easier to find a girl who likes staying at home while arthur probably needs some help in order to change alex had all this problem a girl who isn't owing with him for first place she's not as attractive but she thinks it's wonderful that he's so wonderful him and john well boy meets girl boy loses girl maybe boy knows what he wants and on what terms this girl doesn't know yet but she's doing her best to find out every little experience even the unpleasant one helps me know a little more about myself and that's the first step there are some things about me that i can't change and those are the things that some man will have to live with for the rest of his life so i'll pick him with those things in mind i hope he'll do the same for me and it just kind of ends um so that was clipped um i think it's choosing happiness um i you know there's no credits um i could i could try to look it up i might try to look it up on world cat and see what i can find um but yeah so it's obviously uh for women on trying to pick a partner and who sh you know the attitude that you have etc let me just look this up real quick please bear with me uh let's see choosing happiness film okay yeah it's so it's part of that series i think we showed another film in this series um last week it takes all kinds and this is another one in that kind of series about [Music] basically building a strong marriage and family like picking the right partner and this is something that would be shown in high school possibly to women girls who are taking homeek but also you could major in homek and it was homac and family i can't remember what they called it but it was basically the idea was that you were learning how to maintain a family this is the woman's job was to maintain a family and as we know that is important you know it's like you know pla helping the budget uh you know realizing uh nutritional things taking care you know finding the right partner uh managing the kids it's it's real work um and uh so these films were kind of trying to talk to women about like how look at yourself and look at what you're interested in as a person you know there's there's so many things you have to consider so pretty interesting uh speaking of homeek here's a film about meat enjoy [Music] much of the land in the world is grassland the soil of the grasslands is better for growing grass than any other product grass can grow in the mountains and on steep hillsides it may grow in the sandy areas where there is little topsoil but it grows in all types of soil and in almost any climate in the united states almost half of the land is grassland the grassland states extend from north dakota south to mexico and from kansas as far west as the pacific ocean since people can't eat brass why then is grass such an important crop meat animals like beef cattle graze on this grass and depend on it for three quarters of all the food they eat [Music] most sheep too depend on grass for almost all of their diet [Music] the millions of lambs and cattle are really little more than grass turned into meat and other products such as wool and leather [Music] the corn belt states extend from as far east as ohio west to nebraska and from minnesota in the north south into missouri california and florida are also becoming cattle feeding states most of the cattle from the range area are sent to the feedlots of the corn belt for fattening fat cattle make better meat now it's roundup time the calves are cut out from the herd and the cattle that are ready for fattening are shipped to the cornfield these cattle are in a feedlot eating corn here they are fed to make better meat and to have just the right finish finish means the degree in distribution of fatness cattle sheep and hogs eat about four fifths of all the corn grown in the united states most hogs are raised on farms in the corn belt of the middle west lambs too are sent to the feedlots for fattening about two-thirds of all cattle so almost two-thirds of all meat is eaten east of the mississippi on the average there are more than one thousand miles between the places where livestock is raised and where people eat it as meat this has led to the construction of great livestock markets located in mid-america mostly in cities such as chicago illinois cincinnati ohio kansas city missouri south sea paul minnesota waterloo iowa and others one way of marketing cattle is direct the cattle buyer purchases the cattle on the producer's feedlot another way of marketing sheep hogs and cattle is through the public stockyards where a commission man represents the farmer who usually doesn't come to the stockyards his job is to sell the farmers cattle to get the best possible price for his efforts he gets a commission which is a small share of the sale price after the animals have been purchased they are sent off to be slaughtered and made into meat and many other products inside the dressing plant the cattle are moved on overhead conveyors this is called the disassembly line as they move along skilled butchers remove the hides which are very carefully saved and are later made into leather other butchers put the beef into halves each half is called a side the sides are washed with hot water everything is kept clean and sanitary us government inspectors are always present in meat packing plants that sell their products in other states the job of this highly trained inspector is to inspect the meat for purity the beef sides are covered with muslin sheets before cooling this shapes the fat so that it will not tend to run causing it to be lumpy after it has been cooled they are then moved along the trolley to the chill rooms where they are cooled to a temperature just above freezing a day or two later when the meat has been chilled it may be graded for quality by the meat packers or by a government man this side of beef is marked prime which means it meets the government standards for the very best among the things the grater looks for are these fine lines of fat which run through the red part of the meat lambs and sheep go on a disassembly line too but they are not split in the sides they are kept in the chill rooms until ready for market hogs which have been chilled move into the port cutting department the hams which are the hind legs are cut off as either shoulders or front legs the hams are skinned and some fat is removed they are sent to the curing cellars the rest of the carcass starts along the disassembly line a butcher expertly pulls out the pork loin with his two-handled knife the spariums are removed bacon is made from the belly of the hog this roller flattens the slab of bacon the backs are sent to be made into lard or salt pork the trimmings are separated into lean meat and fat the fat goes to the refinery to be rendered into lard and many other products hams after curing are wrapped in cotton stockinettes they are hung on ham trees and moved into the smokehouse the smoke made by burning sawdust from wood like hickory circulates among the hams for about two days after the hams are cooled they are wrapped for shipping to market bacon is smoked like ham later it is sliced separated into individual packages weighed and wrapped to help protect the meat and to retain the flavor in making frankfurters ground and spiced meat is forced into the sausage casing by air pressure and automatically linked it goes to the smoke rooms to bring out the flavor the frankfurters have been wrapped and made ready for market in their laboratories the meatpackers developed many new items and better uses for the thousands of by-products other than foods that come from the packing plants from hives come shoes from lambswool comes cloth from fats comes soap bones make buttons and from the glands can many medicines like insulin and adrenaline the meatpackers constantly check and test their products for quality and food value the meat is now ready for market it is moved to the distant cities and towns in refrigerator trucks and railroad cars which have been iced to keep the meat cool and fresh the fresh meat is hung in the car and other meat products are stacked underneath to conserve space on the way to the meatpackers branch house here your local butcher buys the meat for his market he carefully selects the types of meat that will please his customers about six and one half million people work in the producing of meat to turn the livestock raised on over four million farms into nutritious meat for your table [Music] meat which once was a sea of grass on the western range [Music] meat um so a long time ago uh when i was doing shows in uh austin texas at the alamo we did a what they call a rolling road show where we went to a sausage factory and we saw how they made sausage and then we ate a bunch of sausage well i showed films about meat including this film so um that was more than you would ever want to know about how they make sausage uh they certainly didn't show uh animals being slaughtered i think that sides of meat would show up already butchered um and then be cut and ground and smoked and processed and cased and all that stuff so we didn't get to see all of that but it was something to see um this next film is about hurricanes uh and i feel like this is circa 1950s it might be 60s not 100 sure but this is hurricane watch enjoy [Music] hurricanes killers destroyers nothing now known to man can stop them but the dam can be minimized and the number of lives they take can be lessened by timely warnings and proper preventive action this is the story of a hurricane and how some people reacted to it it starts in the tropical atlantic where a freighter is churning her way to new york from south america on her bridge the deck officer is completing a weather entry in the ship's log light sea wind northeast force 4 barometer 29.80 falling slowly just an entry in a ship's log normally it wouldn't be too important but this is the tropical atlantic spawning ground of the hurricane and this weather observation has the earmarks of a hurricane being born and so a message goes out to the weather bureau a message that may later affect the lives of millions of people along the east coast of the united states people like judd scott flower the salesman jim gibson south carolina executive [Music] this plan is the united states weather bureau at this very moment the ship's weather message is being received at weather bureau offices along the entire eastern seaboard just a hint of trouble here but enough for experienced meteorologists to request reconnaissance flights into the area and the military's famed hurricane hunters respond both the navy and the air force maintain specially equipped squadrons ready to take off at a moment's notice to investigate a potential hurricane [Music] they don't always find a severe storm but this time it looks like something really big may be brewing but how big there's one way to find out so these courageous flyers take their planes into the very teeth of the gale first the rain squalls then as the plane penetrates the winds increase they lash at the plane with an incredible fury men and machine fight for survival as the winds threaten to hurl them into the raging sea below at frequent intervals weather data is radioed back to the hurricane forecast centers then as if by magic the storm appears to give up the struggle this is the center or eye of the storm here the winds are almost calm the air hot and humid and here the aerologists continue their work wind direction and speed pressure and many other conditions are reported so that the waiting public will know at all times where the storm is and how it will affect good them paper says there's a hurricane on the way we'd better check the storm shutters and make sure everything's okay dane help your father get the lawn furniture in i'm going in and wait a minute kathy let me see that article honey we don't have to do anything yet this story says the storm is still east of puerto rico we can keep the radio tuned in and listen to the weather bureau advisors and if there's any chance of the storm hitting this area will be worn yes mrs scott relax because this hurricane is being carefully watched while it may eventually come your way for the moment you are not in danger hurricanes are erratic and usually slow moving ordinarily they move forward at 15 miles per hour or less so normally there's time for ample warning but more important most hurricanes never touch the united states many stay out at sea or veer into central america or mexico but whichever way they go and this one is headed for the united states you and everyone else in its path will be informed keep alert and follow the latest weather bureau bulletins and now station wmps brings you five minutes of the latest news hurricane watch has just been issued by the weather bureau for the georgia and carolina coasts hurricane betty is located 300 miles east of daytona beach florida moving northwest at 15 miles per hour this does not mean that there is immediate danger however all small boat operators are advised to stay in port or if it's c to return home we repeat on the way mr gibson i just got the latest weather bureau advisory on hurricane betty over the radio the storm is about 300 miles east of daytona beach florida there's no danger to florida but the weather bureau has issued a hurricane watch for the georgia and carolina coasts thank you mrs wilson would you call the maintenance foreman and have him put his crew on standby orders in the meantime i'll make preliminary plans for shutting down the plan and oh yes keep the radio turned on for the next advisory we don't want to stop production unnecessarily [Music] ackman i've just had a call from the weather bureau and the hurricane watch has been issued for this area i want you to dispatch two cars to the beach and notify everyone there also contact corporal weeks and have him set up the hurricane detail and to watch this thing very closely we want to be able to move fast when we get the warning yes hurricane watch for the georgia and carolina coasts this notice tells everyone in that area to be on their guard yet conditions so far do not justify hurricane warnings once the watch is issued residents in low-lying coastal areas should make plans if necessary to move to high ground away from the danger of high tides public utilities mobilize standby crews and ready their equipment for instant action all this time upper air soundings are taken ahead of the storm at coastal stations nearer the danger the normal temple of atoms sea level up to sixty thousand feet are studied here too radar born and bred for war but now developed to help save lives probes the heavens for signs of the storm and there it is still off the coast but moving steadily forward this storm is becoming more of a threat each hour back at the hurricane forecast center the tracking continues here rests the responsibility for evaluation of reports from other stations from ships at sea from hurricane reconnaissance flights and when necessary for issuance of warnings and it is here as at all weather stations in the area that a special emergency warning center is set up to this center come red cross and civil defense workers as well as representatives of press radio and television erratically the storm moves closer almost as if searching for the right spot to move inland everyone watches and waits [Music] ladies and gentlemen it now appears quite certain that hurricane betty will cross the coast tomorrow morning between wilmington north carolina and cape hatteras the storm at the present time is about 150 miles south of wilmington and is expected to move north of the next 24 hours to the chesapeake bay area the hurricane watch on the georgia and south carolina coast has been canceled we are now issuing hurricane warnings for the north carolina virginia and maryland coast this means that all precautions should be taken immediately against the full effects of this storm this is it hurricane watch has been changed to hurricane warning now the public must act to protect property and save lives junior's getting dangerous he's getting tougher and bolder every day now he's top gangster heading for the big time raging along we interrupt this program for a bulletin on hurricane betty the hurricane is now about 150 miles south of wilmington north carolina and moving in a northerly direction about 12 miles an hour people in eastern north carolina and the coastal areas of virginia and maryland are advised to take all possible precautions please listen carefully keep your television or radio set on at all times and listen for official weather bureau bulletins if power fails use a portable or car radio do not listen to rumors if your house is out of danger from high tides or floods and is well built remain there but check on everything that might blow away or tear loose trash cans garden tools signs porch furniture toys and other objects become weapons of destruction in hurricane winds put your auto in a safe place and make sure you have plenty of gasoline your gas station may be unable to operate pumps if electric power fails if you are an exposed area sterilize the bathtub bottles jugs and cooking utensils and fill them with water city water service may be interrupted check your food supply and make sure you have things that require little preparation and no refrigeration remember electric power may be off for some time and if it is keep your refrigerators and freezers closed to prevent food spoilage make sure your emergency lights and cooking facilities are in proper working order get away from low-lying beaches or other locations that may be swept by tides or flooded by swollen streams remember most hurricane casualties are caused by drowning and be sure that shutters are stoutly constructed and securely fastened whether you leave or not if your passage to high ground is likely to be flooded leave early don't risk the chance of being marooned [Music] tie up boats before the winds and tides increase and do not venture out to check moorings during the storm you can do little against the force of a hurricane stay inside now everything has been done that can be done now the fury strikes [Music] [Music] [Music] but every storm is followed by clearing weather this one is no exception everywhere the awesome power of the hurricane is evident shattered sunken and beached boats [Music] crushed torn and battered buildings [Music] tired weary but living people living because no matter where they were or no matter how great the danger they knew at all times where the hurricane was and what they had to do yes living because dedicated people worked round the clock to maintain an ever watchful hurricane warning service [Applause] [Music] so uh you know if you if you look on at a map of the eastern seaboard in the southeast you'll see that there's a chin that sticks out and that chin is north carolina and so we are every hurricane season we're always actively keeping an eye out to see what's coming our way uh and i've certainly endured many many hurricanes over the years the worst one was fran because it knocked out power where i was renting and basically the sump pumps in the basement weren't working because there's no power and so there was like six inches eight inches of water in the basement and so that took out hundreds of films um that i had down there i'm not in that space anymore but i'm also still just as vulnerable trying to come up with a system with some pumps so that that's not an issue but you know it's something in north carolina we get excuse me we get hurricanes and we get tornadoes sometimes at the same time occasionally we get a uh earthquake but it's pretty rare uh anyways yeah that's our deal uh what have we got okay so i have another film set up uh and i have not uh changed the title uh so i'll be actively changing the title as we watch this film about i think it's called oh where is it it's way over here um an african city contrasting cultures it's another film we haven't seen before so here it is enjoy these people live in the city of aviation the capital of the country of the ivory coast in west africa it is morning and they are leaving for work boarding a small boat that takes them across to the downtown section of abijah for most of these people the boat was once the only way to get to work but these days many people go to work by automobile or bus traveling across the new bridges that connect the different parts of the city avigian is typical of many african cities it is changing and there are sharp differences between the old and new ways [Music] the face of abhijan is that of a modern city [Music] much of it was designed by european architects and almost all of the new office and apartment buildings have been built in the year since 1961 when the ivory coast was granted its independence from france and became a republic [Music] more than a century of french colonial rule has had a great impact on the people and culture of the ivory coast and in abijah the capital city the effects are quite clear french has become the official language of the country and in the city almost everyone speaks french even africans who could communicate in one of the many tribal languages [Music] because of this colonial heritage aubergine still has many europeans living in it today and almost all of them are french many of the europeans live and spend most of their time in a section of the city called the plateau on the plateau they do their shopping and have their offices and stores it has become the main business section of abhijan [Music] in the offices and banks on the plateau there are many africans who have jobs and who are being trained for work in business and industry they learn skills that are much needed in a young country like theirs which is growing and developing so rapidly most of the africans who come to the plateau to work or shop don't live here or few can afford the apartments or homes that sometimes cost more than those in american cities the largest african section of the city is across the bay from the plateau and it is called traceville traceville is crowded with thousands of people who have come from small villages all over the country to find work in the city many africans who move from village to city live in much the same way as they did in their villages they spend most of their time out of doors gathering in the streets to talk with friends or relaxing in groups during the busy hours of the day however the life of the city contrasts sharply with the traditional ways these people have brought with them [Music] most villagers have trouble finding jobs in the city for they lack the skills that are needed in the modern work of the city most men and women however find some way to make enough money to live by setting up small sidewalk stands to sell goods [Music] or even operating a laundry service at the edge of the lagoon in a large marketplace just outside the city a group of herders who have come from as far as 600 miles gather to sell their cattle the men have come these great distances because they know that cattle prices are much higher here than almost anywhere else for in recent years abhijan has become one of the richest cities in west africa [Music] [Music] from all over the surrounding countryside people come to the cities every day with food to sell in the marketplace [Music] abigail's largest and busiest open marketplace is here in traceville [Music] in the traceville market people can buy almost any kind of food jewelry or household items almost all of these products are made or grown by the africans themselves [Music] in the marketplace prices vary with each customer usually the better dressed they are the more they are expected to pay across the lagoon on the plateau the wealthier africans in europeans shop in air-conditioned supermarkets almost everything sold in the supermarkets comes from europe and many of the foods the canned goods cheeses and jellies are french here prices are standard and everyone pays the same some of the people who shop in the supermarkets live in new apartment buildings on the plateau others have homes in a wealthy residential section of the city called cocodee the homes in copeldi are large and modern the people who live here include the president of the country wealthy businessmen diplomats and government officials [Music] every business day in abijah when the noon hour approaches the people of the city close their offices and stores and leave their places of work for home [Music] from twelve until three in the afternoon the life of the city is quiet as its people rest during this hottest part of the day the marketplace in traceville is now almost deserted only a few men are left to wash down the stalls after a busy day [Music] on the plateau a parade begins in the late afternoon honoring lyon abhijon's sister city in france the ivory coast still maintains close business ties with france and every few months or so the businessmen of abhijan sponsor a parade to advertise newly imported french products [Music] in treysville at the same hour of the afternoon the people have gathered to dance and celebrate the end of the harvest season even though these people live in the city and no longer work the land they still maintain the old tradition of giving thanks for a good plentiful harvest [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] by dusk the parade on the plateau is over and the shops are open doing business as usual the people have gone back to their jobs or homes and the life of the city goes on as before [Music] is newer and more prosperous than most other african cities but like the others it is a city and change struggling with the beliefs and traditions of an older society as it tries to build and adjust to the new ways [Music] ran over a little bit there but um i love showing film like premiering it live um probably this is the 21st century premiere of that film probably has not been shown by anybody else and you guys were there for it i very much appreciate uh you tuning in even when we weren't live uh for the last two weeks um that might happen more as things begin to open up more and more and we start traveling more and doing more interesting things which i would love to take you along and see so you see what an 80 geek does sometimes sometimes it's underground processing a bunch of old film old videotapes and dvds sometimes it's doing just other kind of interesting things some things we do is are super tedious but i appreciate you guys tuning in every day um also i appreciate when you hit the thumbs up
