so so so we're trying to get situated here uh welcome katrina hi skip how are you hi everybody good to see you uh happy belated birthday thank you very much um do we tell people how we are here 54 what what i'm 55. uh middle-aged couple of youtube yeah um so katrina joins me uh like she did last year uh for the toe tapping tournament and um the toe tapping tournament is why we have this uh amazing work of art uh basically uh it was created by found footage festival this is their third year of doing it uh and at one point last year they said wow we should really take on av geeks because they must have a lot of really great songs so that those were words that they rude saying because we trounced them we just destroyed them oh we totally did so we we might have had a ringer yeah we totally had a ring we had a ringer in the judge and we had a ringer in the song well and i let them choose it so they wanted this clown thanksgiving uh portrait here that i had gotten at a thrift store uh joe pickett wanted it desperately and he remembered it like from 10 years ago and i was like okay i'll put that up and then they commissioned uh that painting did jen do that one or did someone else do that the the club painting the club uh i can't remember who did that yeah but anyways um so the club is based on a public access show that i turned the town of footage festival guys onto so anyways uh we did a competition last year around this time uh where we picked some of our best songs and we really loaded it up because you know i had like 20 years worth of songs uh to go through do we get to bring any of those back i don't it's the rules i'm playing is no i think we should check with them because they they're sneaky guys they're pretty fast and lose yeah with the rules so we might because there might be one or two from the first tournament that we might want to bring back oh yeah there's there's a couple that are so good but we kind of knocked them out so you know maybe it's the top four we can't put in okay but uh anyways what we're gonna do is uh over the last year uh i've been taking notes about things that we've been watching and also noting what you guys have been saying in the comments regarding well like that's a good song that's a good song um and so we have eight songs today and we'll narrow that down to four which so what you'll do is you'll either vote in the comments well actually no i what i'm gonna do is i'm gonna put in the comments you have to email me all right so so uh and i'll do that periodically so you'll be able to email me and that that way i don't have to go through all of the uh comments because they they go fast and curious and you might change your mind as you like this is gonna be my one and then oh so at the end of the show email skip right you're uh yeah do you have a list of them that we could go well so here's the problem is um let me see if i can if i can output this who's fast and loose we're fast and loose well yes um what's annoying is uh i am not able to display any other window with this version of obs and i just realized today that i can't do that so um we'll tell you what we're what we're doing um as far as each uh competition and so i'll introduce uh what it is uh there's two the first one i'm gonna start off with is [Music] a song from the film on the way to school which is a wonderful hippy dippy most the films that we have about on the way to school are about uh safe pedestrian safety stranger danger uh about bus safety this one's not this one is a magical let's look at the world as i'm walking to school so mindful walking right a mindfulness yes uh and i this could have been made by jim burrows our favorite um songwriter next to jim stringer and then it's going to be up against a film called i am and i want to be which is a series of a little vignettes and featuring this girl who's really mad and then little songs about different parts of emotional um experiences and this and that one is about it's a little guy wanting to be a big guy there were a couple of songs in there but that was the one that resonated okay so we're going to start off and what you'll do is i would say just take notes about which ones you liked and then email me at the end and i'll have that information okay so here is uh on the way to school versus i am and i want to be what is that what is this what is there what did you miss look at your world look it all around you look at all this to see look at what you see what do you see when you learn to look when you learn to look the way you learn to [Music] inside of every big guy you'll find there is a little guy a small guy who wants to become a big guy i wonder why you big guys don't talk to all those little guys if you do you'll find the reasons why your little guy needs help from you it's easy for big guys to do and with a little help from you your small guy learns to grow up too so get to know that small guy a really not so bad guy that little guy who wants to be a big guy inside a different [Music] so the rules are so we're gonna have four challenges today with eight songs and what you'll do is you'll be voting between the two each heat so that one is on the on the way to school which featured the out of uh uh tomb kids and then that song from i am and i want to be about the little guy wanting to be the big guy which is incredibly fast and catchy like the antithesis of this i mean what did you think i think putting them against each other made the look around completely get trounced like for me the first of all there are different audiences like the kids are singing to the kids and the the ladies singing to the parents but the visuals and that kid the rough and tumble and the thing and he does a little dance at the end oh yeah yeah yeah and he had a stick he had a big stick just like the club yeah i i'm i see i think last time you and i kind of decided what we pitted against each other right i would have reframed that picture i did it i did it randomly oh randomly because they we knocked out some really choice songs how many are we gonna bring to the tournament we're gonna bring four oh that's it okay so that's what we did last time all right i'm gonna say little guy big guy that's my choice but all right well and remember everybody you know don't let her sway you i'm just one voice of many i'm just i'm i'm the same level as you guys here i just get to maybe maybe a bunch of little kids singing out of tune is something that resonates with you and gives you this warm feeling in the pit of your stomach well it does that's the kind of song i would make up around the house that first one yeah but the other one is the song i would sing and i would say and i just looking at it i don't think that was a jim burroughs okay um so because it was mcgraw-hill and i don't think he did it okay so the next one is ducks which i do think is is jim burrows versus handy dandy filmmaking film um oh yeah and i got to tell you this duck song is real good i love it so here we go wait what's it verse there's a we're seeing two now yeah we're seeing two so it's ducks oh ducks versus handy dandy filmmaking film here we go all right enjoy that gives a word that stands for that walks with little wealthy and it feathers with a quack to anyone it might be [Music] keeping clean is lots of fun for ducklings ducks and everyone always washed and clean and need a nicer bird you'll seldom meet their feathers are so clean and bright they keep them clean both day and night ducks take baths like you and i but dogs do not need cows to dry duck is a word that stands for a bird that walks with little wet runs back and it talks with a quack to anyone it might be memories are made on days like today but memories are hard to show all your capturing the story with camera and recorder memories will be something to see all the things i didn't know i've got them handy-dandy filmmaking film the first heat as a reminder was on the way middle age people talking to the elders right at the 23rd yeah i'm gonna work on this uh for the next iteration of this okay it just did just plain out didn't work obs is a wonderful piece of software until it isn't yeah uh so the first heat you're voting between on the way to school and that song from uh i am and i want to be you're not thinking about anything else except that competition the second one is ducks versus a handy-dandy filmmaking film and what did you think about those films well i'll tell you the ducks was good and this might be just my brain right now it's like i i can't remember it like that it's overshadowed by the other one but what i do remember is that it was much more toe tapping than the second one so this is the tricky one yeah there you go yeah and then my camera me is a film within a films within a film oh yeah which is like you know that's a different competition that's a different framework so toe tapping i'd have to say ducks but for song quality right and memorability and i have to say uh the camera one so yeah all right so yeah you know it depends on what you're taking away and we're not defining what toe tapping means they do no they don't they do but they're but they they they go back and forth these guys man you guys if you guys are watching these found footage guys yeah trouble trouble yeah they're they're uh they're like i said fast and loose they're always throwing curve balls too all right this next one is uh two films uh so choosing what to make and the vandalism film and the vandalism film had a lot of songs in it but i picked the one that i think i remember being the best so choosing what to make uh versus the vandalism film so watch and think about what you you think would be a good between those two songs [Music] you might want to make a flower pot but i'm afraid that won't do because you put in the [Music] dirt would fall apart with your paper and glue what you probably should do is make her a real fancy card not what you're gonna make for your daddy when all you have is a big lump of clay you might want to make him a real nice card for his birthday or valentine's day the card's made of [Music] so listen why not make your clay to a pot for him to grow daisies in [Music] [Applause] [Music] before you start wondering how do you do it now what you're gonna make for your brother when all you have is a big box of paints you might wanna make him a nice batch of cookies and figure you'll get no complaints cookies made out a paper and paint will they don't taste much like a cookie should taste you'd be better off painting a picture of him the cookies would all go to waste [Music] a painting back what you should think of making it makes a messy pain let me tell you you'd be better off doing if you wanna make a nice thing better start off with the right thing i think you'll turn out okay if you wanna make the nice thing you've got that uh epic torch song choosing what to make uh with claymation and then marionette uh of sneaky who doesn't care um so vote between those and only those wow um yeah i don't know i mean the diddy i love the ditty [Music] and there were other songs in that film but none of them were were as good as uh sneaky doing his tag yeah knocking over stuff and uh you have to vote between the two you can't say neither sorry sorry nate okay i'm gonna say sneaky i mean but i keep picking the second ones no i picked ducks because you're saying it again yeah but you you you kind of went different directions you said if if if this then dumps this then i loved the first one and this is the thing it's like the claymation in that was incredible the details i was captivated yes uh so yeah but song alone yeah um all right uh our last competition for today and we will uh do this again next week for the other eight okay uh and then we'll see timing-wise because we want i want to get it knocked out before the end of the month because ideally we will do it um the competition with found footage festival in early may and we will trounce them uh all right so this one is two song it's again two songs that you're voting against those two uh it's the truck song primary grades and versus education today which um has some great beatboxing and wrap to it by great i mean really great it's it's awesome so uh here are uh two totally different songs um enjoy [Music] trucks are hauling heavy loads trucks of metal trucks [Music] another round another load 18 wheels back on the road so wow the last one was uh from dallas public school system uh and there's a lot of bad rap out there but that is good really good rap that last that last thing they came in for like coming in from the side that yeah yeah that was great it was really great and then you know so then uh the truck song is also great in a different way it has a mandolin and you know is some people are uh comparing it to c.w mccall which c.w mccall never really sang he he he did what i call uh one of the first white man rap songs where he's basically speaking um so um yeah so vote between those two and what we'll do is uh at the end i'll do a recap and i'll play all of them oh good okay and um i will also try to figure out a way to bring up the uh the heat information um so maybe we could also do it so that everyone votes on their thing uh their four but then they do an honorable mention like one that they think would be should be in there but it was put up against i'm changing the rules i'm throwing it out i'm doing a found footage crazy throwing a loop in so throw in the honorable mention in your email how about that okay sure good times um i would go with the rap i mean the rap is like yeah i mean just the and we can also say if we're thinking about the goal of we're playing you know the found footage toe tapping tournament their stuff is more like 80s 80s 90s 80s and 90s and that is is that 80s or late 70s maybe what the wrap yeah no that's that's 80s okay so i'd say just even for that point of reference like bringing it in for that reason too right right and it was i think a better song yeah all right excellent um so uh somebody just mentioned garbage in your gut i need to remember which film that's from i i can't remember so if you remember what film it was please write way to sell beer enjoy [Music] this is a bcg a beer clean glass one of your best beer salesmen how can a glass by itself lead to more sales greater profits consider this the most frequent cause of beer with an off taste or odor or less than desirable appearance is the improperly clean glass it's served in anheuser-busch takes every precaution to make sure the beer that's delivered to you is brewery fresh perfect but no matter how fresh the beer is in the bottle can or barrel as soon as it so much as touches a near clean glass a glass that isn't beer clean its taste and eye appeal can be greatly affected so this is one of your best beer salesmen the bcg but what do we mean by bcgs buy beer clean glasses no one intentionally serves beer in a dirty glass of course but we aren't talking about dirty glasses as we normally think of them bcg refers to a special kind of cleanliness this glass for example has been washed sanitized towel dried for all practical purposes it is spotlessly clean but is it beer clean when it's filled will it add to your customers enjoyment or detract from it let's take a close look at the symptoms of beer in a near clean glass symptom one beer in a near clean glass has a head with large bubbles it's loose soapy in appearance the head disappears rapidly reducing eye appeal symptom two it may have stray bubbles rising in it released by the slightest trace of soap grease dust on the inside of the glass in not too much time the beer could go flat losing its delicate taste and zest symptom three you can't see this one its cause is unwanted odors from stale cigarettes and ashtrays disinfectants bar rags even food odors unfortunately we taste what we smell beer in a beer clean glass on the other hand has a firm inviting head of foam a brilliant clear golden color and fresh clean aroma that's why a bcg is one of your best salesmen here is the ideal glass cleaning setup of course all setups can't be this elaborate nor need they be the steps and procedures are adaptable to most any existing sink arrangement here's a glass that's just been used let's get it beer clean first pour out any remaining beer and foam here we're using an automatic flushing device but an empty sink or any other open drain is fine a simple funnel arrangement like this one is convenient and inexpensive the beer and foam go into the sink overflow and down the drain odors and all second you need a solution of hot water and a good glass cleaning compound there are many good ones on the market the one you use should however be odorless so it doesn't leave an odor on the glass suddenly and free rinsing so it will rinse off quickly in warm water third brush thoroughly an electric brush like this one is fast but a good brushing by hand with a stiff nylon bristled brush will work just as well and remember brushing is the real secret of bcgs no matter what else you do if you don't brush thoroughly you'll end up with glasses that aren't beer clean and while you're at it brush the bottom of the glass to remove any grease or oil it may have picked up during handling oh one more thing about brushing ever notice how glasses sometimes get cloudy or hazy some people think this comes from brushing too hard or too long it's usually due to hard water some cleaning compounds give water a milky appearance particularly in hard water areas after they've been cleaned over a period of time in this type of solution your glasses will pick up this haze there's no simple way you can get this glass crystal clear again but here's a simple preventative add just enough water softener to the cleaning solution to get the water clear with clear water your glasses will stay clean looking usable a lot longer okay so the glass has been flushed or emptied and brushed now you should have two basins of clear water one filled with warm water the other with cool water first rinse the glass thoroughly in the warm water to free up and remove most of the cleaning solution when you rinse always immerse the glass with the bottom down so the water pours into it filling it completely if you immerse it with the bottom up an air pocket will form so the glass won't get a thorough rinsing at the bottom next rinse the glass thoroughly in cool water this makes certain it's free of any cleaning solution and lowers the temperature of the glass in case you have to use it right away finally put the glass on a drain tray or other deeply corrugated free draining surface allow it to drain and dry in the open air never dry a beer clean glass with a towel traces of lint soap anything off the towel will stick to the glass never let your beer clean glass drain on a towel it can pick up odors from the towel and it can't air dry properly same thing goes for rubber drain pads your glasses might end up smelling like rubber one last tip rinse the glass with clear cool water again just before you fill it this will make sure any dust or film it may have picked up while drying is rinsed off and will keep the glass from fogging up here's the payoff an appetizing looking glass of beer beer with a good firm head of foam no odors to mask the brewery fresh taste it will be absolutely clear with a sparkling brilliance yet no bubbles will be rising in it take several big swallows its taste will be distinctive and delicious mild but with a mellow snap and tang when the glass is empty look at the sides there should be foam rings from top to bottom bcg the secret of a perfect glass of beer bcg one of your best salesmen [Music] so that was uh made for budweiser by fred a niles freddie niles was a industrial film uh company that did quite a few sponsored films industrial films and they also did a parable which was a film an amazing film that was entered into the national film registry by ralph forsberg where he received death threats and uh assorted things when the film came out um i talked about that some time ago but pretty pretty crazy uh let's see what do we got what do we got um so many films here uh let's see what time is it uh let's let's watch uh about the library of congress i um have friends at the library of congress we've done work with the library of congress on different projects uh they're the ones that released the national film registry that i was just talking about and also an audio registry uh which they just released uh this year's uh which is uh amazing um they've done a lot of uh basically the the uh division of the um library of congress that i work with is based in culpeper virginia and not in dc uh it is their motion picture and audiovisual uh archive it's built into the side of a mountain in a former uh coal mines i believe it's coins uh and a phenomenal space uh phenomenal people that work there uh do a lot of really amazing stuff have some really amazing technology um so anyways this is about the library of congress how it that started and why it exists enjoy [Music] so [Music] um [Music] legislative reference service may i help you free background material oh yes yes sir we've already worked up is that for today's hearings all right our senior specialist on foreign page has already compensated uh yes sir i understand i'll make it rash this is lrs the legislative reference service of the library of congress major research and informational center for our nation's congress here each day by phone by mail and by personal visit come nearly 1 000 requests calling for anything from a spot report to a detailed analysis taking anywhere from moments to months to fulfill information to assist members of the senate and house of representatives their staffs and the committees of congress in the performance of their legislative duties let us suppose that the senate aeronautical and space science committee sends a request to one of the various divisions of lrs with specialists in every major field for background information on the subject of use of the moon as a base for exploring space the task of meeting the request is assigned by the division chief of the science policy research division to an lrs senior specialist and several research assistants a representative of the law library is also present i have some things in the office i know that you'll want to look at well in summary the chairman of the committee of course will want a complete background study and uh our division will be concerned particularly with the engineering aspects but the chairman also is very much interested in the international implications what does it mean in terms of military affairs uh what are some of the international treaties involved and of course uh what are other countries uh thinking about in this regard well i think that's about it let's go to it can there be a moon station for man's venture into space in the days and weeks that follow lrs researchers locate a host of relevant materials recent newspaper and magazine clippings on every area of space exploration state department reports relating to international treaties technical papers of the national aeronautical and space administration as well as other government publications the vast law library provides other answers precedence for international law of territories the effect of existing treaties that may relate to the law of space theories about space law the resources of every division of the law library are tapped each division chief is consulted for leads to pertinent materials that may have even a slight bearing on the subject the vast resources of the russian collection largest outside the soviet union are combed to determine that country's position on space law what about communist china's viewpoint well here is a space law article written by a chinese law professor i'll prepare a report for you using communist chinese legal sources here is a law journal we have just received the main reading room is the hub of the library here readers seeking books their public or university libraries lack search for them in the public catalog the lrs specialist searches here too for other leads on his subject digging through thousands of reports in the library's science and technology collection the contents of each reduced to microscopic size in most cases the entire report contained on a single card the lrs specialist is able to review the current thinking of the world scientific community to obtain a translation of a japanese treatise on space the lrs specialist seeks the aid of a member of the library's orientalia division the library's map collection is also of help containing maps and views of every area of the world from those antidating the voyage of columbus to satellite maps of planet earth and for the first time in man's history a complete mapping of the moon the slavic collections of the library containing literature of peoples from vladivostok on the pacific to the rhine in western europe is another research source in the legislative reference service materials accumulate finally a host of materials for digest and collation before preparing a study on use of the moon as a base for exploring space a study that will involve library of congress specialists in many fields in military and international affairs in foreign languages experts on space law on political science on every area of space science and in the production of the report the skills of a graphic artist at last after two months of concentrated work the end product one of more than one hundred thirty 000 requests filled each year to assist members of congress in the discharge of their legislative duties the services of the library of congress are also extended to the scholar jacob lehrman is a member of the faculty of a midwestern university at work on a biography of francis hopkinson a prominent figure of the american revolution having exhausted the resources of other libraries dr lehrman like thousands of other scholars and students uses his summer vacation to do research in materials found only in the unique and tremendous collections of probably the world's largest library professor lerman's first stop is the library's manuscript collection stored here are the personal papers of a multitude of public figures of the past including 23 of our nation's presidents primary source material for most historical research about the united states here dr lairman comes upon a genuine find a letter from thomas jefferson written in paris to francis hopkinson the days pass and studying the numerous letters exchanged between george washington and hopkinson also reviewing microfilm of manuscripts in european archives and gradually the subject of lairman's biography comes alive francis hopkinson native of new jersey member of the continental congress signer of the declaration of independence merchant scientist musician poet satirist jurist a man of an amazing diversity of talents in the library's rare book collection dr lairman will uncover other fragments to add to the mosaic of hopkinson's life here in thomas jefferson's private library acquired by congress in 1815 is found a satire sometimes called the first novel by an american peter grievous pseudonym for francis hopkinson poems by francis hopkinson and in his miscellaneous essays evidence of his talent as an inventor of his lively and humorous turn of mind a scene in his essay advocating that the path of printed type should follow the sense of the author's ideas another talent of francis hopkinson in an episcopalian prayer book of colonial times psalms set to music by him in the library's music collection among the world's greatest i found the works of francis hopkinson said to be america's first composer [Music] the huge pictorial collections of the library of congress provides another insight into hopkinson's life and times architectural drawings of his home built in borden town in 1750 surrounded by this wealth of americana time for the scholar passes quickly and soon the departure date for jacob lerman approaches elsewhere in the library other scholars are also busy in the hispanic foundation collection a latin american scholar finds material on his own country that makes his long trip to the united states worthwhile in the library's unique collection of motion pictures dating back to the birth of the cinema art a motion picture producer finds one of the earliest color films made around the turn of the century with color applied by hand to each frame of the film using the library's vast newspaper and periodical collection dating back to the early 1700s a journalist is completing a study of coverage given by newspapers of the union and confederacy to the civil war scholars working both in the library and afar are able to take advantage of numerous publications issued by the library including bibliographies technical literature a quarterly journal there is still another service rendered to the scholar by the library providing photocopies of materials in the library's many collections subject to copyright or other restrictions the services of the library of congress indirectly affect almost all of our people even the high school student whose home may be thousands of miles from washington in every library the keys to the accessibility of books and other materials are its catalog and its classification system all library materials are catalogued by author by title and by subject many libraries use the dewey decimal classification system others the classification system of the library of congress to cope with the flood of printed materials more and more libraries make use of library of congress cataloging on the bottom of a catalog card is first the library of congress classification number next the dewey decimal number last the card number by which libraries everywhere can order cards from the library of congress thus behind the catalogs of books and thousands of school community university and other libraries is the library of congress books and other materials from all over the world books in every written language acquired by the library of congress through its multitude of exchange agreements and purchase arrangements through its reference specialists combing lists of library materials from every corner of the globe through gifts today the library of congress has a number of overseas operations to secure and catalog library materials of scholarly value in some cases materials for other major research libraries as well before they can be used they must be catalogued the library of congress has a staff of hundreds of professional multilingual cataloguers producing the worksheets which eventually are transformed into catalog cards the library also prepares the dewey decimal classification system for publication in a government printing office plant new catalog cards are produced millions of catalog cards for some 25 000 subscribers to the library of congress card service millions of orders for cards sorted and arranged by computer systems to speed this mammoth job and get cards out to libraries faster millions of cards in stock to fill orders for the 75 million cards the library sells yearly its receipts going into the united states treasury catalog cards on their way to libraries all over our nation a multi-million dollar service undergoing full mechanization for a new day is dawning in library science as benefits of computerized handling of library data are made available to libraries throughout the country with cataloging data flowing from the library of congress to thousands of other libraries to be used for bibliography catalog cards book catalogs book pockets book cards book labels at home jacob lerman has received the galley proofs for his completed biography soon to be published now dr lairman will use still another service of the library of congress as he applies for copyright protection of his work each day the mail brings to the copyright office in the library over one thousand applications for copyright registration along with copies of each work with much of this material becoming part of the library's own collections in this copyright catalog are some 25 million cards a history of america's creative accomplishments since 1870 of the millions of people who visit our nation's capital each year many come to the library of congress drawn by their knowledge that it is the repository of our national heritage the original drafts of some of our nation's most cherished documents carefully preserved are stored and displayed here [Applause] [Music] since its beginnings in 1800 the library of congress has continued to grow now a third building is planned though its books are loaned only to members of congress to government agencies and to other libraries its research facilities are open to all adults seeking materials they cannot find elsewhere the library in many ways exerts a major force in promoting our nation's cultural and intellectual life the way i doubted if i should ever come back i shall be telling this with a sigh somewhere ages and ages hence two roads diverged in a wood and i i took the one only by assisting our congress but by serving also as the national library of the united states do great big fan libraries big fan library of congress they uh the excuse me the folk music archive they actually have an online jukebox a bunch of the materials that they've digitized uh they along with other entities worked to make audio recordings before i think 1922 fall into the public domain which is something that happened just like within the last six months excuse me prior to that copyright for music were based on what states you copyrighted them in there wasn't a unified thing for popular music and they kind of combine them all together so um yeah some great stuff there beautiful beautiful stuff them in national archives big fan of people there um and i guess they're big fans of us i don't know we've worked together on a couple of projects all right so um where am i uh we're gonna do a recap and i figured out a way to show stuff so um here we go so we've got four uh individual competitions and so eight songs total so the first one we're going to play again uh you know you're voting between those individual things and uh the way we're gonna do it is excuse me because some people watch this after the fact uh we're gonna um go 24 hours ish um so until 2 p.m eastern standard time tomorrow you you can vote on the first uh round um and then we'll record those things people uh toe tapping tournament songs i will say i'm not gonna give it away but there are some cases that there are clear winners and there are some that are neck and neck it's really kind of fascinating some people immediately voted and said you know blah which was really great but now the tide is turning as people are kind of thinking a little bit more about it so please put in your vote we've only
