this is dr ralph kramer's waiting room dr kramer is a pediatric them well through that door is a doctor's examination room now carl you certainly have nice strong lungs there all right now we'll have a look at your blood pressure well say that's um that's quite a muscle you have there kyle get much exercise oh sure i'm a back on a panthers football team we practice every day after school so and uh how about sleep do you find time for that too oh i get lots of sleep mm-hmm what time do you uh usually go to bed carl oh about 8 39 o'clock fine all right just tuck this in like that yeah before he can start to take carl's blood pressure dr cramer fits the hearing part of the stethoscope over his ears and here is the listening part of the stethoscope dr kramer keeps it on carl's arm all right there we are it wasn't bad was it now miss stevens is going to take a few drops of blood from your ear when it's been tested she'll phone your mother and give her the report but you know kyle i'll bet your blood is just as healthy as it was last year the nurse uses alcohol to clean off the spot where she's going to get a little drop of blood from carl's ear carl thought it was going to hurt but he hardly felt it and now the nurse uses a thin glass tube to collect the drop of blood she sucks at the end of the rubber tube to draw the blood up into the glass tube all right now supposing we have a look at your throat open wide just say um [Music] all right well you seem to be in tip-top shape com i won't have to see you for another year put your shirt on now dr kramer uses a wash basin with a foot faucet so he doesn't have to touch the faucet with his hands he always washes his hands before seeing the next patient goodbye kyle bye doctor bye girl bye miss stephen all right mrs k you can bring the baby into the examination room now the baby's first vaccination didn't take so dr kramer is going to vaccinate him again first we better roll up this little sleeve like that all right we'll wipe off your arm with a little alcohol like the hair that's it may i have the vaccine please middle of the vaccine there like that that's it a little that's it now that didn't hurt much didn't dr kramer's office hello this is porter yes oh i'm so sorry is it above or below the elbow why shirley just a minute please for you dr creamer it's mrs porter betty seems to have broken her arm thank you mr stevens yes mrs porter yes i know i'll tell you what to do cover betty with some blankets yes and try to keep her cheerful i'll see you at the hospital very shortly goodbye and here is the hospital where they brought betty dr kramer is hurrying to go in to see betty in the emergency ward here he finds her in very good hands dr barnes of the hospital staff has already set her arm it's in a cast and betty feels much better dr barnes took x-rays of betty's broken arm before he said it and afterward the x-rays will show dr cramer exactly what kind of injury that he had and how it has been taken care of this x-ray picture shows just what betty's broken looked like when she came to the hospital here's another picture of her broken arm and here is a picture of her arm in a cast all set to get well dr barnes has taken good care of betty and so dr kramer is satisfied that he can leave her to go to some of his other patients in the hospital tommy has already been in bed a month though he is smiling tommy is worse off than betty porter his broken leg is in a cast like betty's arm but day and night it has to be held in the same position by traction tommy's going to be all right but it'll take time and now dr cramer is going to visit jenny she has had her appendix removed she's feeling fine but can't eat very much yet so she has fed liquid food through this tube which goes into a vein in her arm dr cramer checks to see that the food drips at just the right speed the hospital is doing a good job with jenny and she will soon be up the nurse tells dr kramer that mrs daniels is on the phone her daughter joan is sick in bed with fever and here is joan waiting for dr kramer to come how you feeling joe awful hot doctor well now we'll just have to take it easy for a while won't we all right let's put the thermometer well under your tongue that's it we want to know just what your temperature is oh yes there's the rash you mentioned mrs daniels does it hurt joan when i touch there we'll know for sure in just a moment here yes the temperature is just about what we'd expect open wide yes it's the measles all right i'm going to give joan some medicine mrs daniels it'll make her more comfortable there's the prescription shall i start giving her the medicine right away doctor yes mrs daniels you can have that filled at the drugstore well joe i'll drop in and see you again tomorrow so long now are you sure there's nothing to be alarmed at doctor quite sure mrs daniels if you keep her warm give her light food she'll get over it all the sooner it's quite normal joan is going to be all right her mother will take good care of her but meanwhile dr kramer doesn't have too much time he has other calls to make some of them are nearby some are far across town where other patients are waiting to be cared for and helped back to health hi everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show um i'm live today although it is a medicated live um i've had a cold for more than a week and it has uh knocked me on my butt i'm not gonna lie to you um it's not cove it's not pneumonia it's not a sinus infection but um i went to the doctor yesterday and had a very different experience one i went to the doctor yesterday the doctor did not come to me to um they used a device like like this to take my temperature um and i was also because i was actually meeting with the nurse practitioner uh i was out in my car and they came out to my car and uh did uh an exam listen to my lungs and all that stuff so anyways got some meds i'm not sounding better but i'm feeling better um so i have energy although it'll probably peter out at some point but anyways i'm here and i appreciate you guys um watching even though i wasn't there the previous shows you know it's not necessarily professional to do a show while you sound so crappy but um i enjoy your guys company hopefully as much as you enjoy my company so this for me is um a chicken soup for the soul as it were okay anyways uh that first film the doctor was not the version of the doctor that i thought i was gonna show i um showed a copy from my collection what i wanted to show was a silent film called the doctor from the oregon archive collection but i kind of forgot that um but anyways not bad still great encyclopedia britannica earpiece film uh we've got a couple of encyclopedia britannica films up um today um kind of weird and coincidental but um anyways we've been digitizing things uh from our collection but also we do it for other collectors and so this next film was one from the nelsons who are based in um houston uh who used to do a screening called cinema beaumar back in the day and this is a neat little curio that this um is a little snippet that came with a bell and howl filmo sound it's kind of a test film and so it kind of shows or at least talks about what the um you know what it's gonna do and it also urges you to register your projector so that if it gets stolen they can help track it down because that was a problem i guess i mean these were expensive the projectors are still pretty expensive but back in the day they were pretty expensive so this is the bell howell filmo sound test film so [Music] so [Music] this reel prepared by metro golden mayor for the bell howell company contains samples of voice and music selected to serve test material to check the operation of equipment piano compositions windy sycamore tree and tone poem [Music] last that was just a segment um i love stuff like that i love tracking down these kind of very niche ephemeral uh film things you know this film was not meant to be shown beyond you know when you first get your projector but um it's not shown for entertainment it's it's kind of a yeah it's a neat little artifact um and i hope to run across some of those at my point at some point i have some symptom test films which are uh society of television motion picture engineer test films that are meant to do things like um calibrate your projector for um you know make sure that the image is not too jittery uh that there's not too much of a weave for audio for color um things like that they're also really fascinating and um you know good projectionists use those even nowadays um they're getting harder to find but they use them to make sure that projectors and focus isn't like consistently in focus across the frame things like that um so big fan of that okay so this next film um we learned about heather and um what she had to do to become a firefighter and this is probably late 70s early 80s i need to see the copyright late date but enjoy [Music] my name is heather garrison i've been a firefighter a year this may not look like work for a firefighter but cleaning windows is part of my job it's work we all share here at the fire station while we wait for a fire alarm or an emergency no one is born a firefighter it's a skill you have to want to learn i learned to be a firefighter by first going to a school run by the fire department they call it a fire academy it's a hard school to get into and they give you a lot of reasons to quit i almost quit the first day of training you see we were learning about fire how fire starts how quickly it can spread through a building afterward we saw a film on firefighting as i watched the film i wondered if maybe i'd made a mistake [Music] i'd never been close to a fire i mean a real fire a fire out of control i wondered if i would have the courage to strike back at a raging fire like the firefighters in the film with only a hose and an axe when the time came would i risk my life to save another i asked myself is this really what you want to be a firefighter and i had to answer yes at the fire academy there was a lot more to learn than just how to put out a fire we learned that our city is protected from fire by a network of fire stations all linked to a central communications center when a call for help is received a fire company an ambulance or both are quickly sent to the emergency we learned about fire codes and fire prevention about hydrants and sprinklers how to match the right hose to the right nozzle to use on the right fire not all fires can be put out with just water to put out this oil fire firefighters use a mixture of chemicals and water we learned how to wear the boots the coat the helmet that protects us from heat flame water and falling debris and to wear the air mask that lets us breathe in a smoke-filled building we learn to use all the special equipment carried on a fire truck and that each fire truck has a special purpose this truck is used by the rescue squad [Music] this is a ladder truck and this truck is really two trucks in one it can pump water through a hose or through these water cannons so it's a pumper truck and it carries ladders so it's a ladder truck 100 feet how would you like to have to climb that ladder to the top of a burning building to rescue someone [Music] because a lot of fires happen at night our truck is painted yellow yellow is easier to see at night than the color red our lights can help us fight a fire at night too or light up the scene of an emergency as firefighters we have to be ready for any emergency so in these compartments we carry many kinds of tools cutting tools chopping tools tearing tools mending tools mending tools because all firefighters learned to give medical aid in an emergency later we would have the opportunity to train to be paramedics as a paramedic we would be assigned to the emergency rescue and ambulance service our fire department provides for our community but the most important thing we learned in becoming firefighters is that you can't fight a fire alone it takes teamwork teamwork to handle a high-pressure water hose [Music] teamwork to carry a smoke victim out of a burning building it was teamwork we learned and teamwork we practiced because in a real emergency our lives and lives of others would depend on it [Music] i used to think that all a firefighter did at a fire station was polish the truck and sit around waiting for a fire alarm but i learned that isn't so we have a set routine we follow every day we report for duty first we check over our truck and all of its equipment [Music] we store the boots coats and helmets belonging to the men going off duty in our locker room and set our boots and put our heavy coats and helmets aboard the truck everything must be ready for the alarm and some days we do polish the truck because that's part of our work too we spend a full day 24 hours on duty at the fire station patterns is two days off duty we think of the fire station as a second home so we take time to keep it clean and orderly we even take turns cooking lunch or dinner [Music] after lunch there's time to cut the grass and we always schedule time to train with some piece of equipment like practicing to lower the aerial ladder gently onto the top of a roof by evening even if we haven't gone out on a single fire or emergency call we've earned our few hours of rest and relaxation we watch tv read study for promotions practice the guitar whatever we like but day or night we must always be ready for the alarm as firefighters we spend a lot of our time trying to prevent fires when we meet people in our community we show films answer questions and give out free information on fire prevention and fire protection [Music] we conduct inspections of buildings to see if they're safe from fire hazards and we visit schools to conduct fire drills and to tell children about the dangers of playing with fire it would be great if we could prevent all fires but we can't so firefighters will always be needed i guess no firefighter ever forgets the first real fire they fight i know i haven't it was a hot summer day my second duty day at station six we were in the kitchen on break martin and charlie wayne don our driver and i when the alarm went off [Music] it was a house fire at 122 burbank street we were the closest fire station to that house so we got the call we were aboard our truck and out of the station within a minute engine company 1 and rescue squad 2 were also on their way [Music] and across town the district one fire chief had been alerted to save life and property it was important that we get to the fire as quickly as possible speed was important but so was safety don our driver knew the fastest and the safest route to that house and the people on the street helped us a lot by giving us the right of way it could have been a false alarm a false alarm is just as costly and just as dangerous as a real emergency but this was no false alarm this was a fire the fire was upstairs in a rear kitchen luckily everyone was out of the house if i had any fear of fire i just pushed the fear aside getting the fire under control and put out saving this family's house that was the important thing [Music] when the district 1 fire chief arrived he was pleased to learn that with the help of engine company 1 and rescue squad 2 we had the fire under control in a few minutes it would be completely out it was really hot that day so as soon as it was safe we took off our air tanks and heavy coats it didn't make our work any easier but it sure made it a lot cooler to the crowd of neighbors who'd gathered our work looked pretty confusing there was hoes laid everywhere water running like little rivers and i was on the roof with charlie and others chopping a hole there was just no time for explanations the fire had spread under the roof the only way to get at the still smoldering embers and to let out the smoke and the heat was to chop a hole in the roof if we didn't put those embers out the fire would have just started up again then someone might really have been hurt our work didn't end when we put the fire out a fire leaves a dirty wet sloppy mess a lot of precious belongings get destroyed or damaged in a fire even a small fire like this one sometimes you can't replace them the best we could do for that family was to save what could be saved clean up the mess and patch the holes finally i had a chance to take a break to sit on the porch with martin charlie don and the others i suddenly felt very tired but i was happy too i had helped save a house and a home i was proud of that i was glad i hadn't quit the fire academy when it been so easy to quit [Music] i knew then that firefighting was the right job for me [Music] there were still hours of work ahead of us back at the station off loading the used hose checking it in replacing it on the truck with new dry hose getting ready for the next alarm i didn't exactly look forward to that work but i didn't mind it either i was a firefighter and that's the work firefighters do [Music] uh so the copyright said 1980 i i saw some of you saw the calendar that said 1979 but it definitely had that that vibe to it um and somebody brought up a good question uh or brought up a fact that excuse me 911 nationwide thing um a lot of places especially rural places didn't have that and so um then somebody asked well how did you call the fire department and uh you know we were always taught to dial operator but also in your phone book when you opened up the cover it would have for your local phone book it would have fire police maybe poison control maybe some other service numbers um gas water um yeah that would be on the front cover and you'd be able to quickly find and call um the uh interesting thing is with pay phones i think you actually had to put coin in and dial zero so you put the coin in with ding then you dial zero then the operator would refund your um what you'd put in but it's still required um you putting money in to report an emergency um i think we learned that from the 70s film chalizonia so that was another encyclopedia britannica film i think we're going to do a almost a run of them uh for the next uh this next film is also distributed by taco beauty britannica although it does feel very european um mostly because it doesn't seem to be a whole lot of narration at the beginning just a lot of um grumbling and hoofing and it's very weird film um and i should say that we're doing a push to digitize a bunch of eb films um for a project we're working on so you'll see more like you haven't seen enough but you'll see more uh films especially ones from the 70s and 80s we've been trying to pull those out and watch them because they're not very well represented on the internet so this is uh choosing what to make and i don't know is this helpful or is this just weird you tell me enjoy uh um um um um [Music] [Music] when i first began working with pottery i began with my hands rather than with a wheel and you get a very terrific feeling of the clay and you know how it works and you can decide its limits you know what it can do and what it can't do then i began working on the wheel and taking lessons having people teach me watching what other people do and reading books then it was very frustrating because i would sit down and i'd take a ball of clay and think that it would be a very simple thing to throw a pot on a wheel but it just takes practice and hours and hours and hours of doing it over and over and over again until you get it right if a friend has asked me to do something in particular that's rather simple because the decision has already been made for me if i am doing something myself i have to take a wad of clay and depending on the size and depending on my mood i will make either something short fat or something long and skinny you can't do anything you want with it but if you are very careful you can do many things with it you can't let it get too dry and you can't let it get too wet and the more you do that the more you understand how you can work with it when i have finished a piece i look at it and decide according to the shape whether it's rounded or tall and thin what kind of a decoration would fit on that particular piece if you're going to make something that's going to have a plant in it you might decide what kind of a plant and what might fit as far as color there are times when i'm very happy with what i've done and times when i'm very disappointed with what i've done and if i'm disappointed it just gives me a feeling that i can go back and try again [Applause] [Music] hmm [Music] okay [Music] what you're gonna make for your mama and all you have is your paper and glue you might wanna make a flower pot but i'm afraid [Music] with your paper and glue what you probably should do is make her a real fancy card now what you're gonna make for your daddy when all you have is a big lump of clay you might want to make him a real nice card for his birthday or valentine's day the cards made of [Music] are clay of thin so listen why not make your clay to a pot for him to grow daisies in what you make depends a lot [Applause] [Music] now what you're gonna make for your brother when all you have is a big box of paints you might wanna make him a nice batch of cookies and figure you'll get no complaints a cookie's made out of paper and paint will they don't taste much like a cookie should taste you'd be better off painting a picture of him [Music] it makes a messy pain let me tell ya you'd be better off doing buy more lumber and make more rocking chairs and pretty soon everyone would be sitting in my rocking chairs i'd be famous people everywhere would come to me for rocking chairs kings queens even movie stars our town will be known around the world malcolm i've got a job for you no time for that now francine we're gonna be famous we're gonna be rich what i'm making all my lumber into rocking chairs francine but suppose people don't want to buy rocking chairs suppose they need other things you won't have any wood but these are really great rocking chairs well i needed you to fix my hairbrush animation but uh that was a pool pre of different skits about making stuff with all these other kind of weird messages plus had puppets plus had a song plus it was some claymation um had a witch somebody commented that we needed clowns and i would say robots too if you added in a robot then we would have covered everything um so uh that uh as you guys picked and noticed that definitely has a toe tapping song in there and uh i had uh communicated with the found footage festival guys uh and they have a pretty busy schedule but they do want to take on the 2022 challenge and uh it will probably be av geeks versus found footage festival in early may so which what that means is then we will so what they'll do is they'll do their own uh internal um toe tapping tournament and i think joe from foul footage festival is actually called something even more annoying so i don't know you don't want us like keep um supporting these bad decisions that he makes but uh we're gonna call it toe tapping tournament from now on at least for now uh anyways uh they're gonna do their own internal and they're gonna then take their top four and they're gonna compete against us and we'll be doing our own internal and we will have four super strong candidates i mean some people feel like you know besides shakespeare would say shake hands with danger you know what else do we got i gotta say we had some really strong candidates uh last year and i think that we will find some really good ones this year and so that'll probably be something we'll start in april um and hopefully you'll be around to vote on things uh let's see what else we got um excuse me i'm sorry if you don't know i have a cold and i'm taking cold meds and stuff but um this next film is a nasa uh progress report uh and it's uh quarterly for 1967 this is what they would do is they would do news releases on film and talked about what they were working on uh regarding the apollo mission so enjoy i like the state we are very impressed with this mock-up block two is about as different from block one as block one was from gemini there's quite a difference in the two vehicles block two is the basic manned apollo configuration this is captain shira mission commander of the first manned flight he is speaking at a press conference at north american aviation one month and 10 days after the 204 accident board ended its investigation to attain the confidence that we need again to fly a manned spacecraft it made eight recommendations directly concerned with the spacecraft how effectively does the first crew believe those recommendations were carried out where do we stand in the overall manned space flight program with captain a veteran of both mercury and gemini will be two young astronauts making their first man flight don isley command module pilot center couch and walt cunningham lunar module pilot right couch we have kept standard apollo crew designations for the first manned flight but without a lunar module we have to make some changes in crew responsibilities of course the mission commander bears full crew responsibility on this and all apollo flights however the command module pilot now becomes the guidance and navigation expert he will also handle any rendezvous procedures included in the mission since there is no lunar module the right couch pilot walt cunningham will be the expert on all spacecraft systems i think it's appropriate that we at least identify some of these changes to you that are in this mock-up i'd like now to have demonstrated to you by don eisley who is our center couch man demonstrating a hatch itself i'd like to call attention to the new hatch design we now have a hatch which uh is hinged to the spacecraft and it seals on the outside rather than from the inside when the hatch is closed these dogs go over center and pull the hatch down against the outer seal and form a seal that way if there is any pressure bill up inside and you had to get the hatch open in a hurry there's a quick release device which pulls these dogs back and lets the hat swing open very quickly it's very similar to the gemini hatch design and we find this is uh much superior to operationally and it's also a lot safer than the old design which was sealed from the inside with hatch panels that had to be installed from the interior we can open the hatch i'd say within two or three seconds now getting all three men out is the timeline and that's the kind of thing that we practice captain chara what kind of timeline are you looking at for getting the crew out of the spacecraft including hatch opening and egress i'd say we could with the help of the external crew cut out in 15 or 25 seconds i would rather not be pinned down on the time until we train and practice emergency egress in addition to the hatch design major changes have been made in the spacecraft interior the wiring electronic boxes and plumbing runs are covered by protective panels storage space is used more economically in all flammable materials such as paper checklist meteorite garments even tissue containers are now stowed in hard metal containers tom stafford mission commander of the backup crew a crew familiar to us from gemini stafford made his first flight with captain shira and later was command pilot of gemini 9a with gene cernan now his lunar module pilot john young command module pilot is another space veteran he made his first flight on the first man gemini and was also command pilot of germany 10. in all the two apollo crews represent more than 275 hours of manned space white now let walt cunningham have the same privilege i did all the wire runs that used to be exposed are now enclosed under metal covers they will protect the wiring from damage and isolate the whole wiring system from the wear and tear of people getting in and out of the spacecraft these covers also form a good fire break these flat boxes are storage containers they are all hardcover rigid metal boxes anything that is flammable or really anything that is flammable for which we do not find a good substitute material will be enclosed in these protective cases the fire as we can best determine was caused by a wiring malfunction this was a trigger which ignited the combustible materials in the spacecraft and they burn very rapidly those materials have been almost completely removed we have a very large list of substitute materials that are being developed daily to replace them some obviously flammable materials remain they include of course the three crewmen themselves and they eat food that is combustible as a result the food and the crew will be packaged more carefully the suit we will be wearing will not be flammable so if we remove all the triggers that we can possibly remove and if we remove all the combustibles that we possibly can and in case the combustibles that we must have in non-flammable material there should be no cause for anything to burn even in a pure oxygen environment we have retained the 100 oxygen environment as a basic life support system for apollo the spacecraft will be purged to a 5 psi level in orbit however we have added the capability of employing a 2 gas system on the launch pad if it should seem feasible at a later time the spacecraft has gone through some changes in systems as well one of the changes in the systems is to accommodate the spacecraft to be launched with air or nitrogen and then purged in orbit to have a pure oxygen environment now in orbit this would be approximately a 5 psi oxygen environment not 16 to 19 psi as we see on the launch pad and there is a tremendous difference in the flammability characteristics of materials at this lower pressure question here can you relate the complexity and the preparations uh for this mission to the complexity and preparations for gemini and mercury training for the first flight is about two and a half times as complex as it was for some of the latter phases of germany missions training wise i think the crew will be in good shape for example i think we're going to be a lot better for this first apollo flight than gus and i were getting ready for gemini three the first man gemini because there will be more simulators available the flight crew support division msc has three apollo simulators at the kennedy space center and seven at the mann spacecraft center where gemini required one basic mission simulator apollo needs two separate pieces of hardware to simulate a complete mission the lunar module simulator and the command module simulator this follows from the two spacecraft phases of the mission the command module simulator realistically duplicates flight hardware the crew area contains active controls switches and instruments it also presents visual displays through the spacecraft window of the lunar module earth scenes lunar scenes star fields and so forth looking at the simulator from the outside the displays bulk very large and sometimes the astronauts call them the boxcars a digital computer complex programs the simulation an instructor directs crew training at a console which duplicates the instruments and displays of the command module simulator the instructor can insert given mission phases from his station and repeat that phase immediately for review training should he or the crew feel this would be desirable the lunar module simulator which fills in mission phases unavailable in the command module simulator follows a like pattern there is the simulator itself and displays such as star scenes and lunar surface scenes it is also furnished with an instructor's console computer and equipment racks to the left of the simulator is a three-dimensional mosaic of the moon surface through closed circuit television it presents typical lunar landing displays marked by craters mounds and boulders the mosaic gives the astronaut a realistic feel for his final landing approach lunar module motion is simulated by moving the map up and down for vertical motion a camera on a dolly track provides lateral movement lights around the camera lens simulate lunar lighting conditions with these two simulators a crew can practice the basic flight elements of the apollo mission from launch complex to landing on the moon and return to earth for more detailed training of critical phases the astronaut turns to specialized simulators let us look at some of them wherever possible these have been modified from existing gemini hardware the dynamic crew procedure simulator which stresses launch and launch abort training was converted from germany it provides a physical environment such as motion sound and the onset of gravity so that the crew can evaluate launch vehicle performance six five four three two ignition liftoff apollo 7 be advised you have pressurization problems in the j-2 standby for possible abort situation roger standing by roger pressure still decreasing apollo 7 decision is to have you abort at staging so i will give you a countdown three two one abort with such training captain shira was able to react immediately to the shutdown of germany 6 on the launch pad this is the old target and docking simulator as used by gemini crews range if you're ready i'll reset it has undergone a face lifting substituting the apollo command module and lunar module stations for the gemini and the agena target vehicle at this point you should slow your closing velocity approximately one tenth to three tenths of a foot per second okay uh is this the recommended docking velocity uh that's correct okay small latches probe should be retracting okay it seems to be okay that's it and then you can back it on out again okay okay i'm releasing all right in your in conditions you had a 90 degree pitch down your degree y'all right zero roll you're offset a little to the left laterally that's probably why you have the yaw right in there you're lined up vertically contact velocity is one tenth per second okay fine eva training centers around two complementary simulators the water immersion facility and pogo a partial gravity simulator the value of underwater training as realistic simulation of weightlessness for study of space tasks was borne out by buzz aldrin during germany 12 eva this experience is being applied to the lunar mission and to the space workshop but the astronaut on the moon will work under one-sixth earth gravity setting up scientific experiments and gathering geologic samples pogo simulates both zero g and one sixth gravity conditions for lunar work simulations a pneumatic tube counterbalances five-sixths of the astronaut's weight gemini crews had the use of two mission simulators one at kennedy space center one at msc these have been combined into a single apollo procedures development simulator it has two crew stations one command module one lunar module in them the astronaut can practice specific flight elements of the mission such as thrust maneuvers star sighting and so forth however the sheer number and complexity of apollo simulators and related equipment has strained existing facilities ground was broken in february on a new flight crew support building to be completed in 12 months it will house the procedures development simulator with a new computer complex to increase the depth of training but this is looking a little to the future for the present all simulators needed to support the first manned apollo mission are man-rated and operational the slow details the hundreds of hours of simulator training have begun progress in apollo support was exhibited by the real-time computer complex rtcc the older 7094 computer which supported gemini abele had reached the end of its growth potential it had been modified to the fullest extent and was operating at capacity the rtcc has replaced all 1794's with five ibm 360s model 75j computers in addition another model 75 computer is housed in building 422 it generates simulated network data used in mission training exercises apollo now has a computer with three to four times the internal speed of the seventy ninety four the model 75 is modular in form and open ended for growth among other advantages to the conversion is the fact that the model 75 has more checking circuits than were available on the 1794's despite the increased speed growth potential and capacity rental is cheaper than the 1794's we should also look for a moment at the communications command and telemetry system abbreviated phonetically to sea cats is composed of three univac 494 computers two used online for mission support one for program development through this system the rtcc receives all mission data except voice teletype and some arrow med data it is fed into a univac 494 and from there to the two model 75 computers supporting the mission in addition to this function retained from germany seacats now replaces the master digital command system in sending out mission commands let us say that the flight director at mission control center wishes to send a command to the spacecraft on board computer the information goes from his console to seacats which encodes the message it is sent to goddard space flight center which transmits the information to a remote site in contact with the spacecraft for this example let us say hawaii and from there it is sent by radio signal to the onboard computer with the older system we could only command one site at a time which meant commanding only one spacecraft manned or unmanned with sea cats we can command four sites simultaneously beneath the smooth tile floors and corridors of building 30 stretches a network of more than 195 million feet of wiring enough to go around the earth one and a half times wiring for computers that can perform an addition in eight tenths of a billionth of a second computers which can receive telemetry or trajectory information from goddard check it and display it on a flight director's console in one second when we set up scientific experiments during the lunar mission we will have the information displayed in mission control four or five seconds after it is sent in this one room is the greatest computer capacity in the free world seven days before the end of the report period the lunar receiving laboratory was opened the newest facility at msc contains 83 000 square feet it is divided into three areas there is a crew reception area for isolation and study of the apollo crew immediately after the mission it supplies necessary housekeeping facilities living quarters and medical facilities for crew examination sample operations provides for preliminary investigation of lunar samples including physical chemical tests gas analysis and radiation counting both these areas are in quarantine isolation the third area support and administration is outside of isolation it supplies conference rooms office space and support activities such as biological support laboratories quarantine actually begins far from this laboratory it begins when the crew leaves the moon surface with 40 to 50 pounds of lunar samples vacuum sealed in a special container it continues unbroken by means of a mobile quarantine laboratory which the crew and samples will enter on shipboard direct from their returning spacecraft the seal spacecraft will also be brought to the lunar receiving lab and housed in this room which is normally open to the outside if the spacecraft must be entered for any reason the outside doors will be sealed and the room will become part of the crew reception area lunar samples must be protected against earth contamination and the crew will be observed by doctors for the remote possibility of lunar contamination quarantine period for crew three weeks four samples four weeks quarantine continues at the lunar receiving lab by means of primary and backup systems of containment a biological barrier is provided by special filters on air conditioning systems and by airlocks irradiated with ultraviolet light by special sealing of floors and walls and by sample cabinets and by other means fifty feet below the ground is a radiation laboratory part of the sample operations area as soon as possible a radiation count will be made of the samples to assure us that very short-lived isotopes are identified and not lost the laboratory is put underground to shield out cosmic radiation extreme care is taken to obtain a true count of activity of the samples for example radon a radioactive gas is present in the atmosphere in minute quantities it will be filtered out by the air conditioning system walls of the counting room are eight feet thick five feet cement three feet down height dunnite is a natural mineral rock which is an effective radiation barrier using it we avoid the cost and weight penalties of lead shielding the biological support laboratories in the support and administration complex are raising plants and animals to be used in tests of different media for possible lunar viruses cultures will be prepared in the support laboratories sterilized and sent within the quarantine barrier of sample operations for testing in studying these cultures the electron microscope gives us the possibility of direct visualization of virus material preliminary analyses will also be made to classify and catalog the samples at the laboratory and to identify the elements present as soon as possible the samples will be distributed to scientists for study in their own laboratories distinguished scientists will concentrate in their specialty areas studies will continue for years participating will be scientists from countries all over the free world they will share with us an experience unique in man's history first-hand study of the composition of the moon we have reviewed the most active six months in the history of the manned spacecraft center it required total effort to recover from the late days of january and move forward with the apollo that was weird um i think it just gets cut off at the end um but uh yeah there's something i love about that it certainly details that uh the apollo one tragedy fire um that took and the what happened uh and what they did to make sure that that didn't happen again but it's also talking about a lot of the prep work and a lot of the behind the scenes and the infrastructure on earth um and uh it just seems very soothing not there's no music there's no like rapid fire you know like editing it's really just like we're just gonna let all this nasa technical stuff just flow into your body um and this is one of the reasons that i'm drawn to doing digitizing nasa materials because of that that culture that um you know the raw nerdiness and geekiness of the logistics of putting people on the moon or putting people into space it's really phenomenal um and i love i have lots of films that talk about what they're going to be doing um you know in the next year they're going to be doing this and they're working on this and this you know the jupiter or the saturn rocket and the you know they're doing this and that um
