so so so so so so hi everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the ev geeks lunchtime streaming show happy birthday old radios happy birthday to anybody else uh out there but um i saw the cold uh and so i'm trying not to be so dopey but we'll see what happens uh so that last film um my fourth year was from a collector in uh massachusetts i've got this i think at an estate sale and the thing to notice about it is that the titles um were things that you could order from your camera store you could also order um personalized titles and so that's what we saw there it was all um someone who shot the film and then they ordered uh these personalized titles they would shoot and then they edited it in and then they showed it as part of the presentation so this was supposedly an agfa stock black and white stock agfa was a european film company and when their colors fade it it fades really weird it's different than a kodak fade it fades kind of a weird purple so um these this is black and white though so there you go uh let's see got a lot of films to watch today uh so let's go ahead and get started with some adventuring pups enjoy [Music] these little puppies lived in the country their names were spotty jerry and trouble they lived in this barn one day they went out to play in the yard out came spotty then trouble then jerry their mother was afraid they might get into mischief and sure enough they did was pulling a rope through a strawberry patch the right thing to do when trouble found a bone spotty and jerry wanted the bone too oh thought mother will my pups get into more mischief they certainly did [Music] the noise frightened them so much they ran away they had never been beyond the ditch before what was it like in the woods what was that noise it was a fog croaking but jerry only looked at him and then went on it had been a long run they were tired and dirty the woods looked very dark and big to three small puppies they wished they were back home with their mother trouble started off to find the way home the others followed but the pups took the wrong path soon they met an animal they had never seen before a turtle he looks strange to them the turtle didn't help the pups find their way home so on they ran [Applause] the sheep could not help them find their mother either then the pups met these two strangers the donkey frightened them the puppies met some other animals first this cow she looked big she did not answer their bark she just stood there chewing her cud next the puppy saw a coat with its mother it made them want their own mother all the more ah what was this kittens jerry just wanted to look at them but the mother cat was afraid jerry would hurt them jerry tried to be friendly with the father cat but he scratched jerry poor jerry's feelings were hurt the three puppies felt very lonesome so on they ran finally they came to the ditch they had crossed before now they knew their way home but it was hard for spotty to get out of the ditch the others did not wait at last he got out he took a shortcut over the bridge the pups were tired when they reached home but they were happy to see their mother and she was glad to see them first trouble and jerry and at last poor tired spotty dirty pups must be washed so first a bath hungry pups must be fed so then dinner a big bowl of food for three of them it tasted so good they ate every bit of it tired pups want to sleep what do you think they're dreaming about mother could rest too because her three little puppies were back home with her again [Music] uh morton schindler um in that film i think i'm pronouncing his last name right but he was one of the key people behind weston woods uh and i'm not sure if this film was distributed as western woods or if it was a encyclopedia britannica but i saw his name in the credits and weston woods did a lot of adaptations from children's books either with full animation or the what we call the iconographic thing where they'll like read somebody will read and they'll pan through the illustrations um but pretty great all right so behind me i have a telecine this is a machine that we use to transfer films and it outputs a video signal which goes into a digitizing box which goes into the computer which goes through obs which gets sent to you fresh piping hot um 16 millimeter transfers uh so uh this is a film uh that we haven't seen and this is part of a series made for uh band directors and high school marching bands uh and this one um is flags two we haven't seen flags one but i have a feeling that with flags two you'll be able to pick up the story pretty quickly so here's flags to enjoy [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] the flag section adds an exciting visual dimension to the marching band through this film you'll learn flag techniques and how to apply them for maximum effects on the field [Music] [Applause] to be effective the flag section must convey two things first precision this comes from the mastering of flag handling techniques second coordination in other words the flag movements must fit the music there are a few prerequisites that are important before we get to flag twirls first one is stripping the flag on count one the right hand comes down grabbing the flag all the way down left hand following and into order position while rolling the flag the flag core can be marching take note that the flag is being turned with the right hand counterclockwise the purpose is to maintain control of the flag in spins and twirls flip flops are used to great effect by the marching musical organization on camp one you go to lance position count two is a dead count and on count three the pike is extended over the shoulder parallel to the ground and the flag is behind you [Music] mark time mark [Music] while in motion most carriers are at order position our single carry position the right hand is extended up the pipe for present left hand is at the cuff you are now in position to execute present [Music] r half presents and slope presents one two three four one two three four half presents are made by the wrist only for example on a single count the wrist is rotated forward and back you go to the right by rotating the wrist inward toward the right shoulder use the muscle of the right arm as a guide go to the left rotate away from the body toward the left ear in a routine it would look like this one two three four one two three four five six seven eight numerous routines are performed from single carry by executing half presents to the accents of music [Music] the figure 8 twirl is the first of the twirling techniques that we learn it is made by holding onto the pipe with the right hand letting the left hand push forward and by the left side of the body back through the right side of the body and cetera the counts would be one two three four one two three four five six seven eight grand [Music] to begin the single twirl let the right hand slide between the leg and the pike come up and catch on top of the left hand thumb to thumb the flag makes one motion all the way around 360 degrees and into a lance position continuous twirls begin exactly as a single twirl from starting position the pike is pulled down by the right hand catch thumb to thumb let the left hand pull the count two up and again reach under and catch on top thumb to thumb be careful not to eat up the pike then go into a constant motion of thumb to thumb finish with a single right hand twirl into lengths left hand twirls are sometimes referred to as single or continuous twirls one type of left hand twirl can be executed from three positions order to order order to lance and lance to lance [Music] flags can command the viewers attention flags can also provide motion on the field [Music] double twirl is a combination of left and right hand twirls on the command of four the left hand turns over pulls the pipe down as the right hand palm up catches perpendicular to the ground between thumb and index finger and twirls into position of lamps the counts would be one two three four one two three four twirl to center can be a very effective mood let's utilize that move in this column ready one two ready go one two three now to really make it effective all of you face this direction you face back toward me ready one two ready go one two three four one two three four one two the twirl to right shoulder is very effective for accents at the opening of a drill turn the right hand over palm up on count four of the command catch between the thumb and the index finger twirl on count one and two in front of the face right arm fully extended into the cup on count three hands together on count four thumb up the pike index finger on the nose it's also possible to execute right shoulder arms single carry by utilization of the left hand twirls for example one two three four one two three four five six twirl from cup can serve as a very good musical ending on count four the pike lifts up the right hand turns over and on count one and two a front twirl followed by three and four a side twirl into a position of lance up tempo ready one two three four one two three four [Music] [Applause] in variation of the above twirls any number of maneuvers can be performed by combining lamps order and twirl to right shoulder a reversal to turn the front can be executed in 13 counts reversal march 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13. [Music] in this percussion solo the flags contribute to the total effect by accentuating phrases and musical changes [Music] [Music] here's a beautiful example of that flowing or legato feeling used as a transition between musical numbers flags are supposed to accent the music if the music flows the flags are moving slowly with grace in a flowing motion [Music] after you have mastered the flag fundamentals you are ready to coordinate movements to music so [Music] [Applause] flags are like musical notes to the composer by themself there are meaningless when placed in a setting and coordinated become a thing of beauty all right flags too we have other uh films in this series we have one about rifles uh i think i have flags one um and then also uh one about fundraising which seemed to be what my high school marching band was really into is um fundraising i was not in band but i had many friends that who who were so yeah pretty great okay um this is a film by cahill charles cahill as part of a series of uh driver safety films and this one is about seat belts and it uses our old friend the ucla uh crash test footage so you might have seen some of this in some of the other films that i've shown but this is seatbelt for susie enjoy [Music] [Applause] [Music] you remember how much fun you had in an amusement park when you were a kid well when you're a parent you live it all over again through the eyes of your child that's my little girl nancy it's her fun and a treat alice and i had promised her before sending her on a visit to grandma's oh i'm sorry i forgot to introduce susie nancy would never forgive me she's made susie an important part of our family you know how it is when a little girl has no brothers or sisters her doll can become pretty important and sometimes so help me i almost think the girl i mean the doll has a personality of her own [Music] sometimes the upkeep on susie stretches our family budget nancy wants her to have dresses just like she has and make sure susie shares all the family treats well it is amusing and of course we don't spoil her like this all the time nancy was only worried about one thing would she remember every single bit of excitement so she could tell it all to grandma alice said roller coasters are all right but she prefers riding in the family car we both enjoy taking long drives together and this one had a special purpose we were on our way to pick up nancy she had been with alice's mother for a week it seemed a lot longer than that the house had been so quiet but we did have susie to keep us company with everything that nancy had to take on the plane there just hadn't been room for a playmate the size of susan [Music] [Applause] then less than a half an hour out of town [Applause] [Music] although we were both wearing seat belts alice was badly shaken up i blame myself for maybe driving a little too fast you always feel guilty at a time like this even when it's the other fellow's fault i'd have to get alice over to dr mcallister right away then we discovered something that gave us both a genuine shock what if this had been nancy [Music] i examined both mr and mrs norwood and was happy to tell them that apart from a few abrasions and shattered nerves they had suffered no serious injury if they hadn't been wearing their seat belts however the verdict would have been different disastrously different i thought i was through with my patients when my eyes fell on another casualty mr norwood was a bit embarrassed until i told him about my work with dolls that had survived car collisions as a medical consultant for the institute of transportation and traffic engineering i examined the dolls that represented children and the dummies that represented adults in a scientific collision staged by the university of california at los angeles [Music] strategically placed cameras covered everything that happened during impact we were especially interested in what happened to children with and without belts because this subject had not been explored but even though they were only dolls and even though these were scientific experiments we couldn't avoid a feeling of tension and a sense of impending tragedy for several months the collision experiments continued at different speeds at different points of impact sometimes with the passengers belted sometimes [Music] [Applause] [Music] speeds such as these of 30 and 40 miles an hour may be moderate by today's driving standards but not to the motorist slammed about against glass and metal [Music] children should never be allowed to stand on the seat of a car sitting tends to restrict body movement generated by the forces of impact to the rear seat [Music] [Applause] [Music] in many cases where the children were not restrained our diagnosis of probable injuries showed that they would have been killed babies held on laps were thrown completely out of the car even in the most severe collisions university findings showed that the three-year-olds seated on cushions and restrained by adult belts came through uninjured as a result of these experiments it was found that for one-year-olds the anchored harness or harness secured by passing a seat belt strap through the loops was the most effective means of restraining the little ones we found that infants were safest in bassinets with the long axis of the bassinet aligned with the longitudinal axis of the car and strapped in this position we also found that infants or children must never be held on the lap and restrained with the adults as collision forces tend to crush the child perhaps you think a collision can never happen to you but the children will be safer if you admit that it could and prepare accordingly [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] i wish that everybody could see these scenes because i don't believe that anyone who did would ever let the children go riding unrestrained again [Music] of course i had already made up my mind to have the back seat belts installed while the car was in the shop and we never go anywhere now that we aren't all safely belted oh yes you're probably wondering about susie dr mcallister knew where to send us and now she's as good as new she may be only a doll but she's never left out and that includes a safety belt for susie many people who would do anything to protect their children do nothing to save them from injury pain or death in the motor accident that can happen at any time this is a frank appeal to all mothers and fathers without restraints such as safety belts the rear seat of an automobile in itself is not adequate protection university research shows that children who will otherwise be killed can live to prove that safety is no accident [Music] so um this was made before uh seat belts were required where manufacturers were required to have cars with seat belts where this was just a safety option at the time and a lot of people didn't go for that safety option so this is part of a campaign towards making it something that was required and then you know all this information of course is outdated and different um because the way that we transport kids and babies nowadays is different and it seems to upgrade every so often um but uh yes i remember of course as all of us uh you know like ten kids piling into a station wagon they were all situated in different ways and you know some of like three of us were up front and you know four of us five of us are in the middle and then a bunch of the way back and all that stuff so i'm amazed we survived because uh yeah all right so it's friday and so we've been tending to show commercials or public service announcements uh just because it seems like that's the thing we do uh so here's a real uh chances are i have shown some psas from this reel because i at different times i've transferred different reels and didn't designate what was on what but this is reel 12 of 1970s tv pca at pcas psas public service announcements so these were shown on television and so they would be sent out to different tv stations who were required by law to show at least some portion of their content dedicated to these public service announcements um i think it's part of their fcc license they had to show things in the public interest um but they weren't required to show any particular psas just they had to show a portion had bpsas and sometimes they would just run five in the morning all right so here's uh here we go here's reel 12. enjoy [Music] [Music] [Music] lisa come on in often hard to know where to turn to find the right office to answer your question so where do you turn health and guidance is as close as your federal information center drop in or call you'll find them so public service minded you'd think they had competition with someone small and just starting out being alive is a full-time adventure there's so much to take in so much to sort out and as with all real adventures there are dangers but for someone small and just starting out there's hardly time to think of danger hardly room enough in their world to watch out for what we might be doing in ours so we have to watch out for them if we don't someday our world may come crashing into theirs stop your car not their world this safe driving message was produced by the hartford insurance group organization asks that you send them your old eyeglasses broken watches discarded jewelry and silver new eyes redistributes the glasses to those in need and by selling the jewelry and precious metal scrap establishes optical funds in hospitals to buy new prescription glasses for the needy throughout the united states please look around your home and gather up the single earring the bent silver fork and the old glasses you no longer have any use for please send them to new eyes for the needy short hills new jersey someone somewhere will see better because you did [Music] the early visitors nameplate for the number of amps or watts required select a ul listed extension cord rated for an equal or greater amount of power finally disconnect the heater entirely when leaving remember a fire
