[Music] [Applause] uh [Applause] blah blah blah blah so frustrating um and this is happening more and more so you know i i apologize i have no idea it you know they say oh i get this message really you know about the same time that the thing goes down it says oh there's copyrighted material i i will find out later what that copyrighted material was and who claimed it and if it's really valid or not um but man youtube big pain in the butt all right um i hope you got to see the awesome plate that was instead of like a clock face and then the table was a clock face it was this film is so good and you know it since it's british there's this the accented narration it makes it all genteel and uh it's a wonderful film and you know the british information service did some really amazing films uh and there were other people that put those things online and i don't know if they deal with the same issues that i deal with i don't know um sometimes i need a break and maybe going to samoa or tahiti and or to tahiti on pan am airlines is what i need so enjoy [Music] the jet age roars in to a land which must be everybody's dream of paradise american samoa heart of polynesia and one of the islands of the south pacific the luxury airport and terminal epitomizes the new but just a few miles from here jungle villages keep all the flavor of samoa's primitive past [Music] the seven islands which make up american samoa lie about halfway between hawaii and sydney visitors to tutuila the largest island of the group soon make for pangopango bay one of the loveliest tree free existence here the unspoiled unhurried atmosphere of the place demands it for everything has a special polynesian charm whether it's an elaborate tropical rum or the thatched valleys on the palm-fringed seashore this is the life we all dream of and south sea island dreams become emphatic reality as we move on to tahiti where the legend began garlands of exotic flowers grass skirts and dusky maidens yes this is how we imagined it [Music] the music made on these timeless instruments is all part of the tradition hands or men in tahiti the girls aren't the only ones who can pull away and palm trees are just around the corner [Music] shop fronts add to the parisian flavor and so do the john dan in papierty tahiti's capital and the tahitians have a truly french regard for fresh food fresh bread is delivered not daily but more often than the mail you never guess but this fishing harbor is a major port too it's not a large town though as capital of the whole of french polynesia and a social and tourist center it has a local urgency the main business area follows the tree-lined waterfront road along the harbor and here there's a cosmopolitan air european influences are strong but there's an oriental flavor too and chinatown is not very far from poppy 80s famed market the shop window for the island's color and delight [Music] there's no need to buy a pineapple to be astride local trends in poppy 180 they call these bikes and it's the way of getting about it's not obviously feminine but it's certainly fashionable and a good way to see the lovely girls who live in this tropical paradise [Music] but there are less pedestrian ways of taking in the accidental beauty of the south sea island you can make spray while the sun shines and take a lazy trip from tahiti to maria this at last is the getaway island you've always imagined [Music] its calm balmy bays and jagged skyline give maria an enchantment that is hard to match it's the past that the present insists on preserving for the future those huts are built like native villages but if you ask for a drink you'll probably be answered in french the south seas mix-up of ancient and modern is intoxicating and delectable [Music] the islands have all you would wish of nature's own charms and the beauties disclosed by mori moria's translucent water that's why they make the simplest dreams come true [Music] so uh pan am made a bunch of these films uh traveling all over the place that pan am traveled to so these would be shown by travel agents they would be shown by um i guess pan am representatives at trade shows and you could also uh rent these films and watch them at your uh social group your men's group your women's group uh so there's lots of uh of things that you could do um it's been a while since i've shown a sid davis film and this one is classic sid davis of course was american amateur turned professional educational filmmaker who i would say ended up making the same film several times a dangerous stranger he made it under different names and the basically his take on the world was very cautionary he would often show uh urban legend things and show them like like they actually happened and kind of really helped begin the whole concept of the dangerous stranger but he also dabbled in other things like drugs and the concept of the gateway drug was one that he liked to talk about so here's seduction of the innocent [Music] this is america in the second half of the 20th century and jeanette is a slave not a slave by circumstance of birth or force but by choice a choice she made herself not so very long ago a choice that at the time probably seemed no bigger than should i be long or shouldn't i the pace of modern teenage society is often fast the beat is sometimes frantic cultures and backgrounds have been mixed the need to belong is ever-present associations are quickly and easily made boy meets girl a seemingly innocent relationship is born we're all looking for new thrills new experiences it's part of life unfortunately it often takes experience and maturity to arrive at wise decisions a friendly outstretched hand an engaging smile and offer it is second all or more commonly referred to as a red but to the group it's a means to an end what can be the harm after all the 20th century has run on pills a pill for extra vitamins a pill to go to sleep a pill to wake up why not a pill to make you feel good but that small red capsule is a dangerous drug to be administered by a competent physician not by a newly found boyfriend but the pressure of the group the need to belong the desire to try something new is too great a temptation but the effect isn't long and lasting and when the drug wears off and the coming down as its call takes place you feel let down and tired but more persuasion a greater need to belong and it isn't long until you try again and again you try new things the hypnotics as they're called seconol or reds nembutol or yellows two and all and phenobarbital and the stimulants amphetamine dexadrine and benzedrine or bennies you begin to lose track of your friends because now you belong to a group a group that must move in a veiled world of secrecy because what you are doing is against the law the constant fear of apprehension [Music] now you meet like conspirators because the passing of pills is dangerous and must of necessity be secretive nerves begin to wear thin the fun of everyday living goes and you begin to wonder what your friends and parents think the guilt grows and as it does the need for something that will bring more relief dispel the fears that you yourself have created you become more dependent on one another but your pleasure in each other's company becomes less satisfying and you depend more and more on the pills to help finally the pills are not enough and you're ready for the second act of your three act tragedy you've heard mike and the group talk of toking up a joint you know it means smoking marijuana mike is more experienced than you in the ways of narcotics but until now he has never suggested that you talk up together but the pills don't give either of you the desired effect any longer and in the insecurity of your relationship you feel a need to find some new experience to bind you together so a suggestion that only a short month ago would have been repulsive now is considered the smell and the taste are anything but pleasing it makes you cough and your throat becomes dry and hot you feel like you're floating you concentrate on one object a tree in the distance it's called fixing as you concentrate time slows down you hallucinate that as you dream this is called tripping your depth perception is affected if you had to step off a curb or get out of a car you would probably need help because the distance might be exaggerated on the other hand distance might seem to diminish as with alcohol the problems don't disappear they only temporarily seem to vanish and return with jarring force when the effects of the drugs wear off but when you get on narcotics it's like starting a never-ending downward tailspin from thirty thousand feet you become less sure of yourself your surroundings your friends quarrels are more frequent with your parents and loved ones you try to convince yourself you're right but deep inside you know you're not you lose your sense of values you think of little else but another blow up your new found language for smoking marijuana you've completed the second act and the third act curtain is just about to go up you don't know it now but when it does it's the beginning of the end the point of no return it can start in many ways at a party in the secrecy of a dirty room that's how your third act began at the top of a crummy staircase on the second floor of a sleazy apartment building now a new character enters your tragedy his name is eric you and mike had gone to his place to pick up your weak supply of pills you didn't like eric but mike had insisted he'd welded you to his coat of secrecy and forced you to help push the pills so you wouldn't cop out on him a user learns to trust no one not even his best girl you sat talking up it didn't give you the kick it used to eric like all addicts knew this oh yes he smoked with you but only to be sociable until a time came when he could introduce you and mike to heroin a year ago you would have been revolted to thought of heroin but now it's an easy step from marijuana to heroin a pill a cigarette a hypodermic needle even now you're afraid what will it be like first you'll get a burn that is a feeling of warmth will slip over you and then you'll become nauseated and get desperately sick finally the wretching will subside and you'll have a sustained feeling of sensual excitement which will lapse into a state of euphoria or well-being but it won't last and when you come down you'll be in the depth of depression consumed by a cancer of guilt for just one second your conscience pricks as you see the needle inserted in the death dealing liquid slipping in and mixing with michael's blood for a moment you want to say no but the will to resist is gone temptation is ever present the desire to try something new something more powerful is too great heroin being one of the most insidious drugs known to man it only seems like days until you're hooked you're not turned on any longer the free ride is over you're required to pay for your fix as your tolerance increases the need for more drugs increases and this requires more and more cash now you're driven to things you would never have considered heretofore by your insatiable need for the drug your moral fiber has collapsed and no crime is beyond your imagination you are an addict and your total effort in life is to obtain money to feed your habit now you're launched on a full-scale teenage crime wave of your very own but with each passing day your tolerance increases and now a fix only helps to make you appear normal and dispel the symptoms of withdrawal withdrawal a nightmare of the attic you live in constant fear of not having enough heroin to keep your habits applied when that supply runs low and the first symptoms begin the yawn the sneeze the runny nose and you can't get another fix you know you're about to begin a living hell first you're burning up then you're freezing then the cramps and pains begin each nerve is laid bare and all your senses are magnified your whole being is like one giant nerve raw and exposed to every outside stimulus this period of withdrawal can go on for a week before the pain subsides and your senses come back to something approaching normal and for this you steal and live a life of degradation and crime but in your thirst for money you become careless and mike is caught now you're on your own and you must support your habit in the best way you can you live in a jungle of fear you're forced to deal with eric alone mike is no longer there to help eric only laughs at your need and tells you to get money money money and more money you're not prepared to take a job besides no job would pay the kind of money you now need you've got yourself a 50 a day habit you can't support that slinging hash so you turn to the only thing you can that will bring your kind of money you become a call girl you support that 50 a day habit but not for long because your looks begin to disintegrate your clients will no longer pay your price you go from call girl to streetwalker then on your 20th birthday you picked up for soliciting jeanette michaels age 20 white caucasian drug addict a 20th century slave self-styled she'll suffer through withdrawal be sentenced for prostitution released and returned to the habit again lost to society she'll continue her hopeless degrading existence until she escapes in death today tomorrow maybe not for years [Music] yeah that's um classic sid davis for a couple of reasons uh one is um it's all narrated by the same guy um and sid did that for uh basically for cost saving doing sync sound where you have like a sound crew there when you're shooting stuff is more expensive um and he does certainly have films that have sing sound but um there are very few most of them have this narrator this voice of god who is it's he's saying the same the same it's usually the same narrator too um when you see the slide see innocent everyday uh kid teen young adult sliding into uh the perversity of whatever the film is about and um yeah sid made scores of films like that and then would remake them and um really fascinating um individual and because he was kind of an amateur let me finish chewing sorry because it was kind of an amateur filmmaker he came into this because he just felt that he had to educate uh kids about dangerous strangers because uh there was a child abduction that happened and he was concerned that his daughter didn't know how didn't really know about the dangers of strangers and so he felt that the story goes that he went to he was a stand-in for john wayne in hollywood and he went to john wayne and borrow money for this production and made dangerous stranger the first one and then just kind of kept reinvesting the money and kept doing more and more of them um anyways yeah so he didn't really base it on i mean he talked to police and things like that but he didn't really do the deep dive of having an educational advisor like a lot of educational films did and he just did it based on the headlines that he was reading and the kind of general attitude so there was a lot of misinformation that was relayed so there's sid davis for you uh you gotta love him you gotta hate him um he certainly set the world in motion for uh talking about strangers and um that fear the child predatory fear that's uh evident anyhow um thanks for hanging in there in spite of youtube uh so the copyright notification of which it said i was not going to have a copyright strike was from the loop group which is an organization that represents copyright holders and polices youtube so i have no idea and there's plenty of chatter about how they are inappropriately tagging um copyrighted material or public domain material claiming copyright on it so it's hard hard for the little guy and i i assume i consider myself a little guy anyways thanks for tuning in thanks for watching the
