correctly anyhow on skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show excuse me where we watch old educational films about a wide variety of topics and that last film was actually a home movie shot by somebody in texas um near galveston um houston area uh and that came from the beaumar cinema beaumar the nelsons who live in houston i believe still let's learn about some deadly spiders [Applause] [Music] [Applause] almost all over the world from the poles to the equator there are millions and millions of spiders legend makes the spider a villain remember the nursery rhyme about little miss muffet who sat on a tuffet eating her curds and whey along came a spider and sat down beside her and frightened miss muffet away generally we need not be frightened of spiders this large huntsman spider is harmless to us it eats insects and other small animals many spiders spin webs to trap their food this black house spider has caught a grasshopper it wraps it in silk and then poisons it this is a model spider inside the heads of most spiders are poison sacks tubes carry venom to the fangs and these are the fangs in most spiders they close like princes spiders have eight legs they are not insects insects have only six legs and are a separate group ticks have eight legs they belong to the spider group so do scorpions they have eight legs this dangerous black widow from america has a red hourglass underneath its abdomen there are venomous spiders in every continent spiders of the same family are found all over africa in southern europe in asia and in new zealand there is a similar kind in australia the red back spider it lives in gardens and in rubbish dumps and especially in old tins it is quite small usually its body is about the size of a pea it looks like the black widow but has a red streak or spot on its back [Music] it is very glossy sometimes it is found in outhouses it often lives right under the toilet seat so do take care the red back is dangerous if you live where he's found be careful when touching tins and logs if you are bitten tie a cord between the bite and the hut tighten it to stop the poisoned blood circulating clean the bite cut the bite and press out the blood and get to a doctor at once but the most deadly spider in the world lives in australia and is found only in a small area near sydney mainly north of the harbour it is found nowhere else its natural home is in holes in the ground and hollow trees but it also comes into suburban districts into gardens and even into houses johnny saw one in his garden a deadly funnel web spider so he called his dad and he came out with a stick he soon found a funnel web spider near a rock he decided to have a good look at her before he killed her she was nearly two inches long and black on top if anything comes near her she sits right up and raises her poison fangs she puts up her front legs to knock insects down and then she poisons them with her fangs her venom can be deadly even to a grown man she could not fight the stick so she ran away they will often pretend to be dead to deceive their enemies but they soon come to life if they see an insect johnny's father wanted a closer look so he got her up on his stick her body is in two parts head and thorax and abdomen she hangs on tight to the stick with her eight legs johnny was interested but a little afraid she can move freely upside down and hangs on just as firmly as if this was her normal position she can even hang on by the claws of one leg here is her abdomen the two spinnerets at the end of the abdomen eject liquid which turns it once into a strand of silk under the funnel web spider's head are the two long polished fangs they strike downward and do not pinch like the red backs fangs they're about a quarter inch long and carry the venom into the body of any animal it strikes as a rule spiders have eight eyes on top of their heads they also have two feelers which look very like legs in the frontal web area they may be anywhere so you have to be careful johnny's father made a thorough search see what he found under an old plank a funnel web spider's nest in this case it's a tunnel in the ground lined untiedly with web at the end is the egg chamber in which she lays her eggs she rears up angrily at being disturbed and then she settles down again here you see her abdomen and combined head and thorax sometimes they come into the house and get into a shoe waiting there and watching for insects spiders lurk in the dark look in your shoes before you put them on practice first aid just in case tie a ligature above the bite tighten it with a stick clean round the tiny wound cut it open and press out the blood get to a doctor at once most spiders are harmless they destroy insects these tunnels are made by harmless house spiders they're interesting to study you can tidy up webs without hurting the useful and harmless spiders always look at tins and rubbish before handling destroy any doubtful spiders on site especially if they look like funnel webs or have red markings like this red back [Music] they can live under toilet seats that's wonderful this film i i think it's every year some 3 million people visit the grand canyon of arizona a very small percentage of these not content with the view from the rim challenge 300 miles of the colorado river on rubberized rafts this is the story of one such group [Music] what should i do if i fall off the boat everybody wonders about that what should i do if i fall off the boat uh usually you're close enough then we have what they call chicken lines on the sides of these boats so on all sides and around the back there's a place you can clutch onto for a while till somebody can get out there and if max's is running and if i see you're dangling over the side i'll run up and try to pull you in or if you have any friends on board they'll try to pull you if you have all enemies then you might be in trouble they'll be pounding on your fingers trying to get to fall in that'll be good be careful of your flip tops uh they get spread everywhere everywhere you go you see flip talks nowadays or cigarette butts especially are real bad so be real careful those little things so be careful around the campsite too the uh the park service is really picky about having trash around everywhere and it's real clean down here so we try to keep it that way [Music] he's been like this big cliff behind us is all the red wall limestone represents a vast period of time when this was under just a shallow sea and uh marine life deposited on the bottom the calcium carbonate built up real slowly you can imagine how long it would take for this much sediment to build up that's vases paradise downstream what an opportunity major here for 18 or 22 day trips or something and they eat nuts and berries the whole way and they have small boats and they have almost a religious type experience and that's that's really great too but the important thing is that they're here in grand canyon and probably the important thing for the older folks too is that they're here in grand canyon from what i've seen a lot of the young people are trying to be too uh too cool about it or uh they can't kick loose just a little bit and really have they let their emotions uh roll whereas the older people have found out probably that they could kind of kick back a little more and time's short yeah enjoy it while you're here well i think we're both proud of our age we are both i was born august the 10th 1899 and by good fortune i may be able to see the sun rise and set in three centuries figure that out figure it out no well i'm a young man i wasn't born until 1904 and i'm only 77 years younger see aren't you a little young this kind of stuff yes we both are really yeah but we have wonderful wives and uh so they take now that's something that we can both agree on yes sir no but actually why well i've never done it you know like world what a variety of scenes that parade before us there are many little side trips of different canyons [Music] some of our friends who are our church fans they said oh my goodness we're going to pray for you i said okay go ahead and put it on the park telephone my grandchildren will think i'm real gung-ho you know oh grandmother well i wouldn't want to do it forever but i sure haven't minded to my notes the river's about 60 feet wide there that's the narrowest in the canyon hey walt what makes the rapids first off you need a real narrow part of the canyon where the walls are real hard rock on both sides kind of narrow and you need a steep side canyon a long flat one like the little colorado or canal creek won't do any steep one and it keeps filing big boulders in and it chokes the canyon and then it forms sort of a dam and the water has to it gains velocity as it comes down over the rocks and when it does it picks up energy and gives that off in the form of wave motion [Music] okay [Music] [Music] is you're on that did you um in uh i think eighth grade ninth grade early high school i did some white water rafting oh my spaghetti is almost done um and uh but it was all like appalachian blue ridge area i didn't do any um west of the mississippi so it was fun i don't know if i could do it now it's a lot of inconvenience but um all right uh let's watch god there's so many things to watch uh let's learn about posture and exercise enjoy the muscles and bones of the body constitute an intricate mechanism which has to do with all the activities involving form and body movement in work play and the many other expressions of personality the gross form of the body is determined largely by the skeleton which is essentially a flexible framework but the 206 bones which comprise the skeleton would be useless without the nearly 700 skeletal muscles each a power unit harnessed to this framework muscle and bone work together a muscle works by pulling it never pushes when one muscle contracts another muscle called the antagonist relaxes many muscles are involved in every body movement muscle it can be stimulated artificially when the circuit is closed the muscle contracts let us now examine in detail how a muscle works the muscle shortens also when its motor nerve is stimulated with electricity a muscle comprises thousands of elongated cells in one cell we see the end plate of a motor neurone groups of cells held together by connective tissue form a bundle arising in the spinal cord a single motor neurone branches to innervate the cells of many bundles neuron and muscle cells work together this is a motor unit resting as a team working as a team this unit coordinates with others here it alternates with another unit its periods of activity and inactivity scattered motor units contracting slightly throughout the muscle in irregular rotation supply a moderate tension called tonus the strength of contraction within a single motor unit varies with the number of impulses delivered per second by its motor nerve increasing the rate of impulses increases the contraction with an amplifier and an oscilloscope we can record the tiny action currents here picked up by electrodes inserted into the contracting muscle at rest virtually no motor units are fired merely gripping the dynamometer requires the firing of a few units a weak contraction engages more motor units fired at a moderate rate a strong contraction requires still more units at a rapid impulse rate body posture is maintained by muscle tone muscles and tendons by the force of gravity tendon we momentarily over stretch the tendon and its muscles the resulting knee jerk is an exaggerated tonus reflex leaning for a minute like this has stretched the tendons of the arm-raising muscles the resulting stretch reflex continues to operate thus involuntarily raising the arm embedded among muscle bundles lie muscle spindles which initiate this stretch reflex sensory nerves leave the spindle when stretched the spindle generates nerve impulses the more stretch the more impulses these impulses travel to the spinal cord and there reflexively stimulate the motor neurone causing muscle cells near the spindle to contract this is the stretch reflex sometimes the head falls a considerable distance before a relaxed muscle is stretched sufficiently to stimulate its contained spindles thousands of spindles in scores of muscles are successively stretched as gravity draws us in one direction and then another each time to be checked by the reflex shortening of some newly stretched muscle easy standing posture is automatic and involves the stretch reflex assisted and modified by nerve impulses coming from the ears eyes feet and the neck muscles often we confuse a stiff pose as shown here with posture pose is an assumed posture it involves conscious effort and is tiring the round back and forward drawn shoulders of this outstanding player betray the excessive demands which his sport places on chest muscles ports develop muscles unevenly by contrast the even development of an all-around gymnast reflects the nearly equal use of many muscles the smooth contours of the swimmer are due to uniform moderate muscular development when some muscles are too weak handicapping postural defects such as flat feet may result the neglected leg muscles can be strengthened by specially adapted exercises when such weaknesses occur in the body wall especially when accompanied by fatness the abdominal muscles may sag trunk flexions with quarter turns strengthen all of the abdominal muscles compare the poor alignment in this affected walk with this easy graceful rhythm good posture is an aesthetic expression which has social value it is very difficult to correct overweight by exercising because muscles use fuels too economically wrestling five and a half hours burns only one pound of body fat sawing wood ten and a half hours burns one pound [Applause] to reduce one must take in fewer calories than the body needs this forces the body to burn stored fat a slice of dried beef reveals bundles of cells surrounded by connective tissue magnification discloses muscle cells of varying sizes muscle strength is proportional to the area of its cross section approximately 140 pounds per square inch smaller cells grow larger when a muscle is taxed to its maximum there is no increase in the number of cells such growth is called hypertrophy extra weights strengthen leg muscles trained to this overload they perform easily in contest similarly a piece of lead secured by wax is used to overload temporarily the ears of dogs to develop the muscles hence the ears stand up at the dog show heavy exercises in the gymnasium are overloads compared to our regular tasks thus strengthened we do everyday work easily and without effort a continuous blood supply is necessary for prolonged muscle action here an armband shuts off the blood to the finger muscles a record is made as the muscles fatigue in pulling the weight cutting the armband reestablishes circulation the power to contract is immediately restored stroke volume and heart rate determine the total blood circulated per minute a small untrained heart must beat rapidly even at rest in order to deliver enough blood endurance work enlarges the heart and increases its output per beat this increased stroke volume is the distinguishing characteristic of the trained heart therefore its work is done with fewer beats a great advantage in hard work the heart pumps blood to the muscles but only working muscles can force it back blood vessels lying between muscle cells are compressed when the muscle contracts here the contraction forces blood to the right toward the heart when next the muscle relaxes fresh blood from the heart rushes in this pumping is the peripheral heart action of skeletal muscles and equals in importance the heartbeat in maintaining circulation sometimes a yawn or a stretch improves the circulation enough to relieve that tired feeling the swaying movements of standing pump blood back to the heart forced to stand motionless the return of blood is so reduced that the heart may be unable to supply enough blood to the brain this leads to dizziness or even fainting heavy work develops strength of muscle endurance work such as this develops heart and lungs properly selected these exercises may also develop that grace and agility which give the owner a body disciplined alert able to meet everyone what do you say um neurons uh gymnast uh learning something new every day all right um we don't always get to do it but when i think about it then i find some old 70s advertising and put it on the telecity we might have seen some
