so so all right here we are we're back hey everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show we just watched modern centaurs modern being 90 years ago um and some of you were disappointed you were expecting half men half horse and yeah and of course they probably remade this film with motorcycles at some point um and unfortunately there were probably animals that were harmed during the making of that film because that was really scary going down that little ravine um anyways so we watch old 16 millimeter films and that was a film from the mobile library collection via oregon archive that we digitized um hope everybody had a great weekend it's nice and sunny outside i almost kind of don't feel like being inside so what i might do is show you a film and then go outside for a little get some vitamin d much needed my freckles are beginning to fade and i need to get them back uh to their full luster uh i wanted to show this last week this is really great this uh came from a collector friend of mine who's also a filmmaker bill daniel who's based in texas he did an amazing documentary art film called bozo texino which is all about hobo graffiti and modern hobos who ride the rails um really amazing footage anyways so he collects films and he sent this to me and this is from dallas texas enjoy hey what do you say how do you know what you'll be good at or internships with name artists and teachers what's your goal graphic artist commercial illustrator lighting technician you can prepare for a career in picture production or television [Music] radio journalism or maybe architecture or interior design of homes and offices the world of the arts and entertainment of communications open wide to you right here and now in high school thanks charles but of course careers in the real world aren't all bright lights and band music some professions demand unusual dedication and devotion many of us are drawn to careers we call the helping professions child care social services education we've asked sally to tell us about the great variety of programs do you like being with people helping people training in education and social services opens up that kind of opportunity training as a teacher can begin right here at our onside k3 program because it's a real school depending on your own special interests you may go out to learn and work at one of the social service agencies making a real contribution to people in need of special help counseling working with juvenile delinquency and teenage problems the aged the poor the mentally ill people films live and through the miracle of a variety of different types of cables it ends up somewhere on your screen so uh we've got uh we watched at your fingertips sugar and spice lacks last week i believe uh or maybe the week before then uh but i have at your fingers tips cylinders enjoy wow [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] round tubes like these are called cylinders [Music] cardboard cylinders come in many sizes and there are many things that you can make from them [Music] put them together with metal fasteners to make jointed toys [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] salt boxes and oatmeal boxes joined together make a big totem pole [Music] [Music] [Music] with a flashlight this becomes a planetarium when you tilt the flashlight to shine in the top of the tube the constellation is reflected on the wall [Music] this is the beginning of an animal it is started by making a pattern for the legs [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] bye [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] do [Music] [Music] cylinders also make racing cars which can be colored in many ways [Music] um [Music] [Music] when you experiment with cylinders you will discover many ways of combining them [Music] what new things can you find to make with cylinders [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] it's um so soothing to me to watch that film um has a real bob ross feel to it just like look at look at all the wonderful things that you can make with whatever's around you um yeah in 1970 man it's a good time kind of makes this warm thing right here in my heart and my stomach it's like 1970. all right what else we got here got a lot of stuff um let's learn about some oddities of nature enjoy [Music] i have had companions ask me while in the jungle why they didn't see more of the wildlife it's there but at war the war of appetites there is every kind of trick to hide from enemies many of the smaller combatants are dressed up in a way to fool the other fellow the most remarkable creature in the tropics along these lines is the walking leave of ceylon it's a near living leaf in every sense of the word vivid green veined like a leaf even the limbs like small leaves with wrinkled edges and it rocks and sways like a leaf in the breeze the walking stick has the same idea only its shape is a bit different like a thin twig and it can do a wiggly little dance like the leaf insect there are many kinds like this in the tropics curiously enough the mimicry of a stick has been imitated by another insect that lives beneath the surface of stagnant lakes and is called the water stick insects breathe through discs in the side of the body this fellow doesn't take chances in sticking the body out of the water it has an air tool and just pokes the end of this above the surface like a periscope but one of the stars of these stick imitators is the mantis known as the praying mantis owing to the way he bunches in the crouch with stick strike legs at various angles the mantis is anything but easy to see if in a brushy place and he uses the deception to evil purpose he isn't timid or trying to dodge the other fellow in his twig right makeup he has a disguised enemy waiting to take the passer by for a ride here is the only insect that can give you an insolent and intense stare that can turn its head that is alleged to practically hypnotize its victims a silly grasshopper has no idea of the nature of such a motionless stick-like form before it whole chapters and stories have been written about the matters which has been called the world's strangest insect unlike other insects it may be fed by human hand without it showing the least fear and it seizes its prey with the ferocity of a panic here is a grasshopper that intends to dodge trouble in mimicry the rock grasshopper is a match for the surfaces on which it basks and mimicry is a common kind of protection free toads match and blend to the bark and lichens on which they live not only in color but in texture and modeling of the skin i've almost had my nose on them before i found them and that brings us to the point why some of the fur animals are brown and the summer and white in winter the hair turns white for the first cold weather and sticks close to the early patches of snow among the great sand drifts of the desert you'll find all sorts of little spiky plants and if you are hunting for horned toads which are really desert lizards you look among little patches of cactus plants where the toads are hiding they shuffle the sand over their backs and leave only their spiky head speaking out it's hard to tell which is a toad or a sprouting cactus you take a stick and dig under little mounds of sand or what may appear like small cacti i've dug one out but failed to see another a few inches away until it happened to move its head in keeping an eye on me then again they are hard to see even in the open as they bask flattened to the ground and their hue is the same as that of the desert sand use a pink or a yellow precisely matching the sand there is a kind that has a perfect crown of sharp spines thus the game of make-believe is carried on in the jungle the deserts and in the sea where the masquerade is even more remarkable but let us get right down to the reason for all this imagine a small crab very much out of luck attacked by a 20-pound fish the rock crab has always worried about these strong jawed fish he lives in a bad neighborhood there are many dark alleys he has always fitted a dead sponge to his back a tough old sponge with a big dent in it and what fish would think of swallowing a sponge but he has grown fat and the sponge he was wearing kept popping off like a hat and a breeze and tide currents are like the wings this sponge has a good dent but it's quite a job to jam it over a fella's back however it looks like a good fit and thus disguised he can dare that file fish to choke in swallowing such a mouthful isn't that smart they are wiser than you think such enemies as the big file fish have taught the hermit crab to seek an empty shell jam his body within it then carry the defensive armor around with him sort of a walking tank arrangement he outgrows and discards an old shell then shops around for a new one of two empty shelves one may be too tight for chest expansion then again another may look better i think i'll take this one ruminates the crab feeling that once he is outfitted with such tough covering he can play around anywhere and duck into the shell if he sees any trouble coming his way under the surface of the very seas where we sailed our camouflage ships lives the original camouflage artist the cuttlefish he can go a several points better by being blotched one minute and stripe the next you may remember how we striped our warships like zebras or broke their outlines by big splotches of color that is camouflage the breaking or confusing of marginal lines so an object is difficult to determine the cuttlefish in changing its pattern is astonishing the changes take place right in front of your eyes blotches or stripes coming or going you say the zebra effect seems to be one of his favorite designs it's one of the best to break out lines but they are liable to swing into a pebble pattern to match the coarse sand to the bottom a combination of camouflage and mimicry but there are keen eyes in the sea an enemy may know the tricks in advance then comes the star play the smoke screen jets of sepia from special glams he clouds the path of advance with the inky floyd with the screen laid down the merc spreads and into their seat darts and zigzags and escape and humans only started to utilize these ancient means a few years past whoa it kind of ended um yeah when the woman started talking in response to what he was saying i was like who said that like i wasn't expecting there to be this co-narration uh in the film but yeah there you go um so i have a film set up on the telecity uh and i i don't know what it is it's i mean i know the title and i know the format but i don't know who's so it's part of the bank street series and i don't know who's reading so it's one world wide river to cross and it's uh some celebrity from the late 60s whose remy meant and i don't know let's see who it is um this is why we watch these films trying to figure out what's what's going on so here we go one wide river to cross hmm [Music] [Music] one wide river to cross that tune is an old folk song and the words come from a very old story in the bible and they are about noah and this book is also about noah and how he built an ark old noah built himself an ark he built it out of hickory bark the animals came in one by one and japan played the big bass drum the animals came in two by two the alligator lost his shoe the animals came in three by three the ostrich and the chickadee the animals came in four by four the hippopotamus blocked the door the animals came in five by five the yak in slippers did arrive the animals came in six by six the elephants were doing tricks the animals came in seven by seven a drop of rain dropped out of heaven the animals came in eight by eight some came in by roller skate the animals came in nine by nine the cats and kittens kept in line the animals came in ten by ten let's go back and start again one right river and that wide river is jordan one wide river there's one wide river to cross it rained and rained and rained till the high hills and all the mountains were covered the waters receded and the ark came to rest on the mountains of arat show that he would never again send such a flood god set a rainbow in the sky [Music] do [Music] i could uh listen and watch um diane carroll talk all day such a beautiful voice and she's pretty easy on the eyes um so she was on uh her own sitcom julia and somebody pointed out she was on dallas uh around the same time as that education today uh film came out i'm sure um very elegant lady uh has a nice career no longer with us um in fact i think i showed this or i transferred this and put it online the day that it was announced that she passed um but it's first time we saw it here and it does kind of um it's the end of black history month today's last day and i have another film set up that we can watch that i don't think i've shown um and uh i like showing films with music but that always gets me in trouble and so like last week uh on friday i was i showed fat's waller and facebook took me off so this one i think is okay i don't know we'll see who knows we never know so this is blues maker um enjoy when i was a little boy we usually need to holler that my song and beer you know [Music] lady you used to get that uh smoke coming out the kitchen you know you replied it over you you think about wondering why you're going tonight and you know that girl should have mistreated that sunday well yeah you're forgetting to have the blues there you understand see that's what that what the blues is [Music] so [Music] no [Music] well at 61 highway [Music] she wrote from new york city down next mexico [Music] you know as samples [Music] you know it's some folks said [Music] i said please please see somebody from me [Music] i said please [Music] tell her [Music] mcdowell lives in como a small town in northwest mississippi he has played and sung in many places chicago california newport and places in europe he is probably best known for his style of guitar playing an old style which he learned from an uncle years ago tuning his guitar to an open cord he sometimes uses a glass bottleneck to slide up and down the strings with that bottleneck he can make his guitar say anything he does [Music] just like see now all right you got a girlfriend you're good to her if you got a wife you're good to it give her anything she said she she won't for did you label well you have lots of combination well you lose that company somewhere that hurts you you understand you see and if you can play music the more you play the better you feel you know today because you begin to play it off your mind so that's where the blues are when you get off to yourself then you see you studying and that you can hit one of these things sit down and play your two or three pieces your mind is how you get up put it down a little bit you pacified you got that off your mind what you thinking about that's that's where the blues is a lot of people don't know what the [Applause] i have a letter this morning [Music] [Applause] the land has yielded crops one of which was a rare music the blues many of the great blues makers have died but for a while yet the country blues live how you like it boy for a while anyway so great wow um yeah so happy uh black history month and honestly this is um this is culture this is black culture um which is american culture we have claimed it and we use it and it gets used by uh rock musicians it gets used by country musicians it gets um the food the language the fashion the art all of that is american history so i will certainly pull out films next february and show them but i will also show films featuring people of color all throughout the year because it's you know american culture or its culture uh and it should
