so so so so so hi everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where i wish i had a nurse's hat that was as awesome as that nurse's hat was um i got this because i did a show um av geeks get their period and everybody that participated or helped me present um we all were wearing nurses hats uh so so this one is not nearly as good and doesn't stay on i guess i would need bobby pins anyways uh we watch old 16 millimeter films it's not all about nurses hats here at av geeks and that was a film uh that we scanned for uh from the oregon archive and it was raw footage that uh the soundtrack was recorded separately on tape and then there would be a sink at some point uh so i have no idea what that was for it just said uh birth birth control center on it that's all it was written on there so um yeah uh it is black history month and i feel bad that i haven't been showing as much stuff as i had um trying to reach down and find stuff that you probably won't have seen anywhere else and this is uh and so maybe i'll do that for the next couple of days i'll pull some interesting films uh that um yeah that you would really not see anywhere else so this one is also from oregon archive in pittsburgh and this looks like this was a attempt a amateur film that was documentary documenting the black eagle squadron which i believe was the some of the tuskegee airmen let's watch and enjoy the american military has headquarters here in washington dc from the white house in the pentagon building our leaders run a worldwide military network from early colonial times till today black americans have played important roles in the making our country and our military history this film will show you a little bit of that history here at the tomb of the unknown soldier several army guards marched 24 hours a day to honor our unknown military dead unknown to most americans is the fact that black americans were flying in the u.s army air corps during world war ii during the early months of world war ii which started in 1941 black americans were reluctantly allowed to enlist in the u.s army air corps they were trained at a new army air base in alabama called tuskegee after basic flight training at tuskegee several tuskegee airmen were sent here for advanced flight training this is selfridge air base near detroit michigan the air force thunderbird flying team is flying in for air show here the precision flying is a good example of the teamwork involved in running a large complex organization like the us air corps suffrage has a long history as a military air base the tuskegee airmen are part of that history the black airmen were stationed here and in army air bases in africa and europe now it's been over 40 years since world war ii ended the tuskegee airmen have returned to selfridge to be a part of the air show in the early 1970s the black veterans formed a national organization called the tuskegee airmen they are dedicated to helping black youth get into college and aviation by providing scholarships and being role models and also maintaining a museum in detroit michigan at historic fort wayne members of the detroit chapter tuskegee airmen meet for a reunion with the b-25 medium bomber several of these airmen were in the 477 bomb group the 477 was made up of three squadrons of b-25s with all black crews most of the tuskegee airmen were college men elmore kennedy on the left was a b-25 squadron commander most of the tuskegee airmen were college men they had either graduated from college or had a few years of college training xb25 pilot robert walker walker's here on the right alexander jefferson's in the middle nate carr is on the left after the 477 bomb group was activated they were stationed at godman field in kentucky later they moved to freeman field in indiana the p-51 mustang was used by the tuskegee airmen as their mainline aircraft in italy it's a fighter aircraft the b-17 flying fortress was the most used heavy bomber used by the army air corps to bomb nazi europe the b-17 squadrons were based in england quite often the black airman's mission for the day would be flying protective escort for the b-17 squadrons flying out of england several of the tuskegee airmen were killed overseas some were shot down by german pilots and anti-aircraft guns some were killed in flying accidents 66 were casualties for the young airmen africa and italy was their first time out of the united states that and flying for the army made it the adventure of a lifetime friendships were made that would endure for the rest of their lives italy is a country with a long recorded history a showcase for history the airman's life over there meant months of living in crowded tents and sleeping on folding cots the food was the same canned food the rest of the regular army units received the air bases were temporary installations set up for a few months use the trips overseas were made on crowded troop ships any veteran who's ever been on one will tell you about how crowded they were the journey to europe usually took about four or five days most of these young men did a lot of growing up fast in north africa and italy the discipline they learned in the military would benefit them for the rest of their lives one of those airmen on the left charlie hill returned to detroit michigan to become a school teacher to him italy was a beautiful country in spite of the war and all the destruction every place he said that the italians were nice people the ground crewmen had their work cut out for them somehow they keep they managed to keep the pilots flying the months of training the airmen receive now became the difference between life and death as they flew out on regular combat missions the airmen found that the training that they had received would make a big difference in the way they survived in combat most of these men knew that their life was on the line and if they weren't better than the other pilots they were up against they wouldn't be going back to the united states they wouldn't make it back the b-25 squadrons were not sent overseas they were always plagued by a shortage of trained personnel elmore kennedy and robert walker these are the men who flew the b-25s and maintain the b-25s it's a very proud part of our aviation history to have had these medium bomber squad squadrons out there flying on the combat conditions during wartime wanting to go overseas but they never did get sent overseas they were never cut orders to go overseas these are our b-25 pilots and crewmen the b-25 pilots say that the b-25 was a smooth flying well-engineered aircraft the air cooler used a process of elimination to screen these men as they went through tuskegee flight school only the best survived the reunion's about over now and the pilots are saying goodbye all of the military services were integrated by president truman in 1949 since then minorities and women have been and continue to be valued workers in our military services pretty great 1983 uh amateur mate obviously but um still has some great footage i guess they were at the reunion uh and then and they're cut with some uh photos yeah um i should have uh yeah so for the next uh week i'll be um finding some more things that you probably haven't seen um black history related and i'll try to keep away from the the common stuff that you know i mean tuskegee airmen is you know for some people they know about it there was a feature filming about it at least one um but uh yeah i'll try to dig down a little bit because i have some great stuff um this next film is about tippy the town dog and i don't think it's real i don't think there was a tippy um this is all made up but yeah kids don't care every day on his way to school jimmy stops to say hello to tippy tippy is a friendly little terrier owned by mr black jimmy lives near mr black jimmy has no dog of his own he likes tippy very much mr black is bringing tippy his dinner he likes tippy and he tries to take good care of his dog but mr black is a very busy man he doesn't have time to play with tippy a dog needs someone to play with mr black says tippy's dinner fan won't stand still jimmy enjoys watching tippy he tells mr black how much he'd like to have a dog just like tippy mr black tells jimmy to come and play with tippy anytime a dog needs someone to play with but now it's time for school and jimmy must be on his way he'll stop and play with tippy when he returns mr black is glad that tippy will have someone to play with now tippy is alone again but say there's someone to play with a rabbit has wandered into tippy's yard he goes right out again though maybe tippy can catch him tippy wants to play with the rabbit he thinks the rabbit would make a good playmate but the rabbit runs away from tippy he finds a good place to hide where tippy can't see him tiffy goes down the street to look for someone who will play with him he's free to go any place he wants what will he do now here's a dog to play with or is he too big for tippy tippy is glad to see the big dog he thinks he's found someone who'll play with him tippy is a friendly dog but the big dog growls a tippy is tippy in danger can he run faster than the big dog yes tippy is safe at least for now but what's this maybe tippy can find someone here to play with it's an organ grinder and his monkey [Applause] does the monkey like tippy tippy would like to be friends but the monkey gets angry and he chases tippy away poor tippy no one for him to play with it sounds as though there are many dogs nearby maybe tippy can find a friend in here [Music] with all these dogs he thinks she should find at least one friend but tippy wonders why the dogs are in cages it's the dog pound where the dog catcher keeps lost dogs until their owners come there's the dog catcher now if he can catch tippy he'll call mr black but tippy is afraid of the dog catcher now where will tippy go there's a fire station maybe tippy will find friends there this fireman likes dogs tippy seems to have found a friend at last the other firemen like dogs too maybe the firemen will make tippy their mascot but what's that it's the firebell [Music] the firemen will have to go to the fire tippy's new friends are leaving him [Applause] poor tippy just when he found some friends to play with there go the firemen [Applause] leaving tippy alone again there's no use staying here any longer tippy might as well go somewhere else meanwhile jimmy has come back from school he calls tippy of course he's surprised when tippy doesn't come could something have happened to tippy maybe mr black will know jimmy must find out he calls mr black but mr black doesn't know where tippy is say there's a hole under the fence could tippy have gone through this hole jimmy and mr black agree that tippy must have gone out through the hole mr black has something to tell jimmy you know jimmy he says i don't think tippy has been happy here a dog needs someone to play with and i don't have time to play with him you'd give him the company he should have jimmy says i'd like to have him mr black i take care of him and play with him all the time find tippy jimmy and you can have him jimmy thanks mr black and runs off to find tippy where could tippy have gone almost anything can happen to a dog running loose in a city as tippy had an accident the dog pound would be the first place to look there's the dog pound jimmy let's hope that tippy is inside is tippy here no no tippy jimmy is sorry he knows tippy would be safe in the dog pound and where could tippy have gone maybe he went this way jimmy had better hurry or tippy may be lost for good there's the fire station maybe tippy's there now jimmy asks the fireman the fireman has seen tippy he went that way he tells jimmy jimmy runs to find tippy at this very moment tippy is just a little way from the fire station will jimmy and tippy meet will jimmy ever find tippy here comes tippy now but no he's turned around poor jimmy and poor tippy they may never find each other now it's no use jimmy it looks like tippy's gone for good but look here comes tiffy again will jimmy find him will jimmy see tippy yes jimmy has found his dog and tippy has found his best friend jimmy is happy and tiffy is happy jimmy will have a dog for his very own tippy will always have someone to play with they'll be friends from now on i've got a theory here and i want it's going to take me a second to get this up and running on um i guess i could do this hold on all right let me share my screen um oh boy causing all sorts of problems here so uh tippy looks really familiar and i was like why does he look so familiar so let me see if i can do this what is he doing okay so um here is skipper from skipper learns a lesson and let's see let me switch this and then here's tippy the town dog and i think they're a similar breed i don't think they're the same dog but they're so similar um i feel like the coloring is just a little bit different but the thing is the the guy who helped make this film uh paul brunford run phil brunfold wait what's his name hold on his name is paul burnford uh he made both films and i'm just wondering if this is i was when i saw tippy i was like that looks a lot like a skipper from skipper learns a lesson um so i don't think they're they're not the same dog but they're similar breeds i think so that's there we go doing a deep dive here um here at av geeks uh plus skipper tippy they have double p's i don't know what am i trying to say anyways um yeah i'd love for them to be the same dog and be like they're just one dog it's tippy skipper depends on the film um and i've shown skipper learns a lesson in the past um it's about a racist dog uh all right let's see i got on behind me the telecini i have a film set up it's consumer power so let's watch that enjoy technical problem um yeah let me come back to this that's that's really annoying uh for some reason it's not uh running so let's watch what makes the mix rain and i'll try to figure out the temple setting problem all right enjoy [Music] now form a male what's this [Music] a letter from billy johnston i wonder why he's written me dear mr weatherman can't you do something about the weather today i was getting ready to go on a picnic with mother and dad but it rained and we couldn't go so i decided i would write you i know that the rain comes from the sky but how does all that water get up there and what makes it come down yours billy johnston p.s please promise me good weather for our next picnic hmm guess i'd better answer billy's letter right away too bad the rain spoiled his picnic dear billy you know that neither i nor anyone else can make the rain stop or start but maybe i can tell you where it comes from where it goes and how it gets back up in the sky do you remember how you've looked up and seen the clouds shutting off the blue sky the clouds got bigger and darker as you watched and soon it was raining rain does a lot of good work billy it fills the streams and brooks and rivers it gives water to the trees and bushes and flowers so they can grow some of it makes puddles on the ground maybe by the walk in your yard but when the rain stops and the sun shines again the water in the puddles gradually disappears though you can't see it some of the water is going right back into the air when you've watched mother get your supper have you ever noticed the tea kettle boiling on the stove as the water boils the steam rises from the spout and goes into the air if the water boiled long enough it would all turn into steam and go into the air and that billy is what happens to the water in the puddles the sun warms the water and turns some of it into water vapor which goes into the air but so slowly that you can't see it this invisible water is called water vapor and here's another way to answer your question billy you may have helped mother hang wet clothes out on the line if water didn't turn into vapor and go into the air those clothes would never dry no matter how long they hung they'd stay wet full of water but because water does turn into vapor in the warm air the clothes will dry as they hang out on the line for a few hours whenever water goes back into the air we say that it evaporates evaporates see the word vapor in there evaporates means to turn into vapor later when you came back to take the clothes down they were nice and dry because all the water in them had evaporated into the air all the rain that falls sooner or later goes back into the air that's how the rain gets up in the sky water evaporates from the puddles it also evaporates from the brooks and the lakes and the rivers and from the oceans everywhere it is evaporating turning into water vapor and going back into the air you've played with a mirror haven't you flashing the sun's reflection on the side of the house if you blow on the mirror you'll see that your breath gives off water vapor too see how it dulls the mirror you can rub it off plants too return water to the air but again you can't see it because water vapor is invisible yes plants of all kinds give off water vapor the flowers the bushes and the trees they all use water from the earth and send it back into the air some of it goes high in the sky where it gathers into pretty white clouds but now billy what makes this vapor return to earth as water watch sometime when mother pours hot water into the sink when the hot steam touches the cool glass it forms drops of water which are almost like raindrops see how wet the window gets heating water makes it evaporate cooling vapor changes it back to water we say it condenses look at the glass next time you drink your milk does it seem to sweat or the glass isn't really sweating of course but it is wet it's just the water vapor in the nearby air being condensed or turned back to water by the cool glass the same thing happens outdoors invisible water vapor is turned back to water by the cool air some vapor condenses on flowers and bushes where it forms tiny drops of water called dew sometimes the cool air condenses the water vapor into a heavy grey mist that looks like steam this we call fog but much of the vapor rises into the sky there it condenses into tiny water droplets which gather into clouds as more vapor rises and cools the larger and darker the clouds become when they are heavy with water the rain falls on very cold winter mornings you may have seen an icy white pattern on the window pane that's frost which comes from water vapor in the room and freezes on the cold glass when water vapor freezes in the sky it falls to earth as snow snow stays on the ground for a while but slowly melts under the sun's warming rays and goes back into the air as vapor just remember water always evaporates into the air from the oceans and rivers and brooks it evaporates also from plants but while water is always evaporating into water vapor from some places on earth in other places it is constantly returning as dew or fog or frost or snow or rain it's important to understand that the earth and everything on it use the same water over and over again i know what else i can do i can send billy this book it tells what makes rain when you open this book look carefully at the drawings they show how when the clouds are heavy with water the rain comes down forms puddles travels on top of or through the ground to the brooks and rivers even to the ocean how some of it goes into the ground to feed the trees and plants this water evaporates and goes back into the air as water vapor some of it rises into the sky where it forms clouds to fall again to the earth to be used over and over again you see billy water is never lost it condenses and evaporates into water vapor to condense again that's the story of rain where it comes from where it goes and how the earth has been using the same water over and over again ever since the world began ps now you know too why i can't promise you good weather for your next picnic [Music] hold everything we got a letter from billy uh we will put off the hurricane um tracking so that i can answer this question about what makes rain um okay i got the uh the ornery telecity up and running and we will try this again this is consumer power credit enjoy i can't say yes i like it i can say no buy it consumer power consumer you know we psychoanalysts believe that uh one of the most primitive and one of the earliest needs of the infant is what we call the oral need the need to put things into his mouth and the infant you'll note by the way will grab anything and put it in his mouth it's his first way of getting to know the world and it doesn't matter whether it's something edible or not edible the mouth is the place that it goes unfortunately a great many adults never quite get over this first oral phase they have so many things to get and they want everything now and you don't have the money to do it all now and credit's great morality in some people leads simply to overeating and they get terribly fat and they don't know what to do about it but in the more symbolic sense it leads to trying to grab and seize everything in sight and to over extend yourself to the point where it's completely irrational and has no relation to your real needs or to your real capacities credit and installment credit in particular makes a very substantial contribution to the quality of life in this country i think in the main this contribution is made because or through the ability of credit to permit the consumer to have the use of a product or a service earlier than he would be able to if he had to save the money until he had sufficient funds to pay for that product it sounds good but then there's a big red bait there there's a hook in it you know what is the hook well the hook is you're going to pay 18 overall so don't you see that makes me makes me pay more for the item where i could do without the item if for something like a stove or an ice box or something like that that i have to have well then i would get it and and suffer the 18 but if if i didn't have to have it i'd rather save the money first and then purchase it for cash consumer credit contributes to the economy as a whole in that it enables people to buy products that they would not otherwise be able to buy furniture mainly our living room set in our bedroom set clothes appliances house car so we always buy our cars credit refrigerators major appliances property and furniture my bedroom suit just everything that i've ever had i voted on time well certainly the the extension of credit is the main pillar of our economy in terms of uh accelerating consumer purchases and i think there's no question that without the extension of credit our economic growth and our economic situation would be severely jolted uh as well as our banks and finance companies insurance companies and other institutions that rely on the uh the growth of an economy with all it produces by way of taxes and goods and services that's based on the extension of consumer credit it's obvious that many segments of the society benefit from the use of credit obviously the lender benefits the lender makes a profit but also he creates jobs in that there are many positions that have to be filled in the financial industry because of the demand for credit and the creation of jobs through that source what would your life be like without credit if you shouldn't do surprisingly we would probably have two pieces of furniture i don't know it just makes a whole bunch of money for people i i don't think about it's just a convenience for me that's all i buy mine on time why do you do that because i can't afford to pay cash for it because i don't have any money and i pay it as i make it and i like it because i see something i don't have to have the money right then all they do is charge it well who eventually pays for it i do i think that fundamentally the irrational needs far outweigh the rationalizations that are given for using credit and that's what makes it a neurotic destructive force in our society and not the constructive thing that so many people would like us to believe we used a credit card on the trip because we didn't have the money and we went first class the person who feels helpless who feels impotent needs some kind of magic potion something that will restore his feelings of power or even of omnipotence and here is where the credit card or somebody says to you all you need to do is sign your name the signature suddenly becomes magic and at that moment when you're signing that your name on that thing you're filled with this feeling of magical omnipotence and that too is great stuff hi to me i think credit cards they've got a place like buy like i've got a well i've applied for a master charge i'm waiting for my card now but i work at a bank so and there you you have to sell credit cards that's part of your job so you learn to you know you have to if you have to sell it you've got to believe it the bank credit card provides the consumer with the equivalent of a charge account at each of many thousands of merchants throughout the area where he lives this means that if a particular bargain is available to him at one merchants and that merchant accepts the card and most merchants do today the consumer can go there and take advantage of the bargain if he decides that he is going to use the card only as a convenience by this i mean that he is going to charge during the month and then pay the entire balance at the end of the month there is no cost to the consumer for this service the the credit card uh growth in this country i believe increases consumer prices for example suppose you have two consumers one walks into a restaurant and pays for his meal with a credit card and the other walks into the restaurant pays for his meal uh in cash now in the credit card the restaurant certainly is uh gonna pass on the discount uh to the consumer uh the uh the credit card company is gonna take its five or seven percent and the restaurant is going to pass that on by increased prices to the consumer so prices are increased not only to the credit card customer but also to the cash customer who in a way is discriminated against because he didn't cause any uh increase in the restaurant owners uh prices similar to that caused by the credit card customer there's an effect on the economy that is very difficult and perhaps impossible to judge but to the extent that the use of credit cards increases the volume of business it's almost certain that it results in some economies of scale and some reduced prices to the consumer my husband said you know you would have the money to buy the things you need if you did not charge much on the credit card if you get them paid off then you'll have the money to go buy it and it's great if you can just keep your faces off the credit card and obviously it would be possible to present the card to many different merchants in a week or a month and make many many purchases the aggregate amount of which would exceed the amount of the credit limit and perhaps exceed the individual's ability to repay if i had to write out a check or i had to pay cash for something i would think twice before i would rip that checkbook out of my purse but if i can just rip out a credit card and say oh well i could pay half of this month and half next month i'm not you know it's completely different i'll get it where before i probably would not get it i'd probably wait a month or you know just not bother with it or wait till i can afford it this way i don't wait i just take it and then i suffer the consequences when it comes up again it's just like the extension of any credit if you can pay as you use or if you can purchase and obtain a product now and pay for it later you're more likely to purchase more products the horrible part of it is i think is that i know when i'm charging that i i shouldn't be i know that i shouldn't be using the credit cards as much as i do and i know that i'm fully aware of it but it's just something that you get caught up into i would say it's a little bit like giving yourself a shot of speed you know for a little while it makes you feel good it fills that need but then there's the inevitable come down when you're faced with the reality the reality in the case of the credit cards is that you have to start paying up and you see the gap between the fantasy and the reality and then come the end of the month when all of it starts coming back in it's too easy and i think there's also a bit of the same element of addiction that the person who becomes habituated to using drugs has to raise the dosage all the time and the same thing happens with with this the few credit cards don't do the job anymore so some new user will come along with a super duper credit card that will again make you feel a little better for a period of time and i used them and right now i have used them to about the limit that i can because um i just don't have that much self-control do you think they thought it makes you buy more than you need to buy yeah yeah i don't no i don't if i want something i want it you know i want it now and i don't like to wait and people don't know how to use credit they're not see they're not educated they're not mature enough you know i would rather get it now do what i want to do with it and then pay for it at my leisure when i can right children and you see they they have access to do something so they do it here and they do it there and they do here and do it there pretty soon they've got 75 coming in and 100 is going out and somebody has to wait you know sometimes you'll want something and you can't always have it right then and to me i have used credit so much that i think it would be like slapping my hands or something finally then they pay him and then they pay him they don't pay him and then that's what they pay him and they don't pay him and finally you're two months behind here one month behind here all of the iron here and everybody's going to have you didn't have it they said okay you know let's go to the collection agency let's go to court well what's the court going to do to you if you don't have it you can't pay it until you do then they go to the finance company and they want to make a personal loan to consolidate and so will they and they consolidate their loans and they've got one small monthly payment of 23.99 and they go out and do it again and they still got that 23.99 payment but they've got 35 here and 20 here and 47 here and all that and they've got no money coming in so finally they go bankrupt or they get sued and they get their wages attached and and that kind of stuff and they get everything repossessed then they wind up going bankrupt and then they're they're dead they don't think i prefer to say it more as a psychoanalyst that he develops certain unconscious patterns of behavior which limit his ability to think clearly for himself and to feel like a free independent human being i've known people have had two-year contracts that have run 17 years and they're still trying to drive the same car you know it's the truth and then when they do go to sell sell it or trade it in they've got a 1900 balance on a on a 47 year old or because they've converted it from a conditional sales contract into a loan then they've refinanced the loan and then they may buy something right they sell them something else and add it on and they still all the time whenever they add something on if you buy a couch and you add keep adding things to your bill that couch is never paid for until you've got a zero never never even though you've paid even though the couch costs 300 and you've paid 1200 while you keep adding things to that contract you've never paid for that couch and they can always repossess that they can always they can get everything until you've got a zero everything until you get a zero balance so if you get you can get a car a living room television bedroom ice box stove everything and if you don't pay for you can have paid for these things and still on the color television they can come in and get everything the whole house is empty we've done that on claiming deliveries on what they call a c d before it was illegal we used to go in and uh for repossessing stuffing and repost a house full of furniture take pots and pans and everything else just to be spiteful just to put in the little little little digs we got you you didn't get us do you like people you guys yeah we love people we love people we're happy always have a good time love have a good time like people but we like we don't like skips well typically a consumer gets overextended for two reasons one indiscretion on the part of the consumer wanting to purchase so many goods and services uh beyond his or her means and and second not knowing really how to resist a fast sell there are many finance companies in this country and other extenders of credit that basically uh exploit uh the weakness or the indiscretion of consumers and pull them deeper and deeper into debt uh first by advertising come ons but second by not really disclosing the full uh price that the consumer has to pay you've got the idea that it's this this particular item is only gonna cost you eight dollars and sixteen cents per week or per month what is eight dollars and sixteen cents per week for 149 weeks and don't miss a week because it's gone don't miss a day well there are just many illegal or fraudulent practices that have flourished as a result of the credit economy uh the huge uh growth of door-to-door uh selling for instance is heavily dependent on taking advantage of of the credit economy and i think there have just been inordinate types of frauds in such activities as aluminum siding sales referral schemes pyramiding schemes uh magazine subscriptions encyclopedia sales uh the food freezer uh sales where the uh the consumer has to pay for a freezer plus so much meat over a given period of time these are enormously uh fraudulent what might be called hardcore types of fraudulent experiences that have been documented across the country by the federal trade commission by other government agencies watch out for the place that says we carry our own contracts you know they're the places that do it to you because they're the ones that put on their own interests their own finance charges their only charges the reputable store you buy something you have to finance it they put it through the bank that's the reputable store the store that says the place that advertiser we carry our own contracts no credit needed they're the ones to watch out for because they're the ones that put the screws to you if they can't they really will don't you agree with me yeah we carry your own contracts boy they'll do it to you every time if you can bankrupt if you're new in town yeah that type of thing they're the ones that sell money the flashing lights they sell money they sell credit they're the ones well the the first rule of thumb is is just to uh focus common sense on uh what the consumer is getting in return for what he's paying and uh and that means you've got to look at the product the quality of the product the the interest payments uh how many months or weeks uh the payments are spread over uh and the kind of uh of store or the kind of creditor that you're doing business with uh you can determine whether it's a flyby night whether it's an established operation or if it is an established operation whether they're they're playing it straight and they're disclosing facts and they're willing to answer your questions without getting irritated or without trying to uh treat you uh like a child if a person would take time to sit down and add up the finance charges on a contract on one contract each the monthly bill say in a revolving charge account they'd be astounded they wouldn't believe it they wouldn't believe the amount on a you can owe 600 and pay 200 in finance charges but people are scared i think that they don't want to do that because then they'll think that they've been taken so they just give themselves and they don't they don't care they don't want to know the truth you know they don't want to they bury that's happening they bury their heads they do well credit can give you more freedom for example in the sense that a struggling young couple who needs some money now to provide certain things for their young children if they can get what they need when they need it without usurious rates i think it can help them really live better here and now and can give them more freedom of movement but the way it is practiced in the large majority of cases i think it enslaves you it makes you like the peon in mexico or the sharecropper in the south or the miner in a company-owned town who runs up enormous debts so that he's never free to leave the land or to leave his job he's an effective surf now clearly there are great benefits to the credit economy but when an individual or a family is locked in for two three years uh there's a certain kind of of economic dependency uh on the creditors that flows over into broader uh restraints that that impinge on people's ability to do what they want it makes it even more dangerous let us say to be a dissident it makes it more dangerous to be critical of the institutions of our society because you have so much to lose and in this way i think it really cuts down not only on your freedom of movement but even on your freedom to think clearly and independently which is a very essential requirement for a citizen in a democratic society [Music] we don't like skips uh yeah those guys are jerks i mean even though they were relaying information about their trade [Music] it was still pretty obvious yeah we'll even take the pots and pans just to spite them i mean that's theft that's really horrible um so my question is does media like this still exist is there anything out there to inform young people and older people about these risks about the risks of credit are people being taught this information because uh you know they're they talked about the the evil lenders but there's a lot you know even the legitimate lenders are now becoming very predatory predatory in how they're uh divvying out credit how they're telling people about credit and not about the negative aspects of it um the big flashing lights as those two guys talked about there's lots of big flashing lights and there's not so much uh uh a kind of counterpoint to say like okay so if you get this on credit this is what's going to happen and i think the housing crisis uh financial crisis was related to that that there was a lot of cheap mortgage money and a lot of lenders went out door to door literally and convinced people who did not need a second mortgage to get a second mortgage and then those people lost their homes so a pretty bad situation that you know we all suffered from that in in some ways so anyways uh off my soap box um it is that time of year where i get to get uh black jelly beans uh
