so hi everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where my webcam was beginning to freak out just seconds before i came online it was going put i was like oh no anyways luckily uh i was able to get it back up uh so we watch old 16 millimeter films here and uh today is president's day so we're watching a bunch of films about presidents um sure why not we watched a bunch of films about gum on friday so why not presidents um so we've got a variety of different clips and uh that last film was uh we had digitized for the perlinger archives and it was actually part of the mobile brothers collection um so oregon got some of the mobile brothers collection and perlinger archives got some of the mogul brothers collection which ultimately then ended up with the library of congress so uh there you go that's some assorted uh newsreel footage or you know educational content with taft with our good friend president taft uh here's very short uh nasa thing from 1991 who was president then do you know let's find out [Music] the following program is a special presentation of nasa select the television service of the national aeronautics and space administration history proves that we have never lost by pressing the limits of our frontiers first for the coming decade for the 1990s space station freedom our critical next step in all our space endeavors and next for the new century back to the moon back to the future and this time back to stay and then a journey into tomorrow a journey to another planet a manned mission to mars that was short um not the complete thing uh there's more after it but what happens is i don't know if you notice the color was beginning to go on it and so basically this the tape was uh having some problems it was clogging the video head on the tape and so it begins to deteriorate over a period of time so here's back to film we watch president plan a tree enjoy which president do you think it is let's find out [Music] this is the white house home of our nation's presidents since 1800 when it was first occupied by john adams today april 12 1957 in keeping with a long-standing tradition a tree is to be planted on the white house grounds by president dwight d eisenhower a tree that is to take its place among other interesting trees among the ginkgo the canadian hemlock and the american holly alongside the oriental spruce and the camper down elm among the hundreds of other trees planted in [Music] this white oak was planted by president herbert hoover just about the time the star-spangled banner was officially adopted by act of congress as our national anthem if you were to stand on the north portico of the white house looking toward pennsylvania avenue this american elm would catch your eye it was planted by woodrow wilson and helps to date another interesting historical event passage of the 19th amendment allowing women to vote for the first time [Music] also on the pennsylvania avenue side you will see this fine specimen of pin oak it serves as a living memorial to president william mckinley he planted it at the turn of the century just as hawaii and puerto rico became part of the united states a pretty ornamental japanese maple is proof that interest in tree planting was shared by other members of our president's families this dwarf maple was planted by mrs grover cleveland it was during her husband's administration that the statue of liberty was placed in new york harbor one of the principal attractions on the white house grounds is this impressive southern magnolia planted by president andrew jackson in the early 1800s its planting coincided with davy crockett's brave defense of the alamo from the lower balcony on the south side of the white house you get an unobstructed view of the beautiful jefferson memorial and the washington monument that proud spire etched against the sky close by is one of the oldest trees on the grounds a living symbol of another early day president this is an american elm planted by john quincy adams around 1825 just as the digging of the erie canal was completed and buffalo and new york became linked by water yes there are many famous trees on the white house grounds and their growth has kept pace with america's history one tree is missing the oak planted by president theodore roosevelt one of america's greatest conservationists the tree he planted fell to the elements but his memory is marked by millions of other trees growing in the national forests he helped to establish the planting by president eisenhower was in itself an historic secretary of agriculture benson was on hand as were chief forester mcardle and agriculture's assistant secretary peterson the president's granddaughter susan and mrs eisenhower also attended the interesting ceremony a black walnut tree one of america's most popular trees was selected by president eisenhower for this planting the black walnut has always been closely associated with one of president eisenhower's favorite predecessors abraham lincoln this tree from lincoln county in illinois is the first of its kind to be planted on the white house grounds the personal interest of the chief executive in the nation's forest resources and in tree planting specifically was pointed out by secretary benson he said the ceremony highlighted increasing tree planting activities nationwide and gave new emphasis to conservation the president told his granddaughter that like the tree she too would grow tall and strong and beautiful congratulations all around on a good tree planting job as the ceremony drew to a close there was considerable activity on the part of the photographers in recording the event for posterity [Music] the roots of the young trees soon took firm home six months after planting healthy leaves gave evidence of a good start in the new home chief gardener robert redmond who has spent more than 30 years tending the white house trees has given the black walnut his personal attention and care and so on the grounds of the white house a little black walnut tree has taken its place among other trees planted by other presidents a tree characterized by strength beauty and usefulness characteristics of our nation itself [Music] thank you us marine band orchestra for that fine music um yeah so this is usda usda had their own film units so they made a lot of films um on lots of different topics and so this is pretty great all right so behind me i have a telecini set up and this is uh what we use to transfer films uh and we can do it live via a variety of cables so this goes uh sdi to hdmi to usb 3 to uh yeah to um this imac and then that's um ethernet cable cat 3 i believe and then somehow it makes it to you uh that's the magic of uh cables so the film i have set up here is what excuse me one i have not seen uh it's by braverman productions and we saw what did we see a braverman production film about the 60s uh so i'm gonna have to stand by because i'm afraid that he's going to use it's it's like a kind of interesting montage but he used a bunch of popular music so hopefully that's not gonna be the case but this is nixon checkers to watergate enjoy [Music] ladies and gentlemen the president of the united states i'll have to start early i was born in 1913. i grew up in a service station my father had a station and services and store out in the country so i filled quite a few tanks of gasoline changed a few tires and checked the oil and cars before in 1940 probably the best thing that ever happened to me happened i married pat we had a rather difficult time after we were married i practiced law she continued to teach school in those days it was still depression time and we didn't really have very much money we were both working then in 1942 i went into the service i was just there when the bombs were falling and then i returned returned to the united states and in 1946 i ran for the congress when i left office after four years as a congressman two years as a senator and eight years of 45 000 a year as vice president you know what my net worth was 47 000 and a 1958 oldsmobile that needed an overhaul i have no apologies to the american people for my part in putting alger hiss where he is today i am not and never have been a member of the communist party i am holding in my hand a microfilm a very highly confidential secret state department documents these documents were fed out of the state department by communists who were interested in seeing that these documents were sent to the soviet union [Music] and i you and i oh richard m nixon the republican nominee for vice president by inclination [Applause] my fellow americans i come before you tonight as a candidate for the vice presidency and as a man whose honesty and integrity has been questioned the tougher it gets the cooler i get i'm sure that you have read the charge and you've heard it but i senator nixon took 18 000 from a group of my supporters i made my mistakes but in all of my years of public life i have never profited never profited from public service i've earned every cent i'm proud of the fact that during the six years that i have been in the house of representatives and in the senate of the united states i have never charged to the taxpayers any political expenses one other thing i probably should tell you because if i don't they'll probably be saying this about me too we did get something a gift it was a little cocker spaniel dog black and white spotted and our little girl tricia the six-year-old named it czech and you know the kids like all kids love the dog and i just want to say this right now that regardless of what they say about it we're going to keep when a man in presence of what he believes to be correct and right stands up in front of all the american people and bears his soul he is a courageous man all those in favor of nixon [Applause] divert me from the great issues of this campaign and that i will well and faithfully execute the office upon which i am about to embark so help me god a lot of people may raise the question why all this hullabaloo about being fair particularly when the people you're investigating are a bunch of traitors in fact i've heard some people even say after all are a bunch of rats why do we go out and shoot them well i agree that the communists are rats but on the other hand remember this when you go out to shoot rats you've got to shoot straight because when you shoot wildly it makes it easier for the rats to get away we keep hearing of a new nixon the american people the great majority of them in the eisenhower administration have had the best four years of their lives four more years quick thinking of latin america in terms of the siesta manana and the sampa the rapper and the cha-cha-cha we must think of platinum as it is as a great vital powerful force in the free world where changes are taking place a great revolutionary change there have been doing the course of this trip some unpleasant incidents some of them came to the point that there was danger not only to the president but to mrs nixon real a danger and risk of harm and even of worse there were occasions as the president said when some incidents occurred i remember before i left one of my good friends said you're very fortunate to get away from the senate for a nice vacation you you must not be afraid of ideas the first exhibit i showed him was a model american store with all the variety of products and so forth that you can find in such place and as i showed it through him i said mr chairman when i was a young boy i used to work in a little grocery store along with my four brothers that my father owned khrushchev replied all shopkeepers are thieves vice president richard m nixon has been unanimously nominated to be the candidate of the republican party for the office of president of the united states i stated on many occasions that the united states must meet its commitment on berlin it is a commitment that we have to meet if we're going to protect the security of western europe i resent that comment i resent it because it's an implication that republicans have been trigger happy and therefore would lead this nation into war and i saw all the debates and i think that people were depressed people gave them a toss up on when you considered them all but the first one was not as good as the others there's no doubt about that i want i want senator kennedy to know and i want all of you to know that uh certainly if this trend does continue and uh he does become our next president that he will have my whole-hearted support i shall not be a candidate for president of the united states in 1964. i shall be a candidate for governor of the state of california in nineteen sixty this is my last press conference well i made it clear that i am not a candidate for public office i also want to make it clear at the same time however i'm not writing myself off as a political leader in the united states [Music] what we have today is a policy which will mean that next year there will be over 500 000 young americans in vietnam you know how many went there this year 200 000 more more men more men on the ground fighting the communist kind of a war when the president of the united states cannot travel at home or abroad without fear of a hostile demonstration then it's time for new leadership and a new president and that's what we're going to do in 1968 [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] yes [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] this time we're gonna win i shall recommend to the convention that it nominate for vice president on the republican ticket governor agnew of maryland hubert's a lawyer america hubert's a very plausible man but hubert is a sincere dedicated radical constant administration is government of the birds by the birds and for the birds i say it's time for a change it's time for a new team it's time for a new policy and i pledge that kind of a thing richard nixon goes over the top with 287 electoral votes and that seems to be the 1968 election a teenager held up the sign bring us together that will be the great objective of this administration i am particularly honored to stand here for the first time as the president of the united states north vietnam cannot defeat or humiliate the united states only americans can do that so tonight to you the great silent majority of my fellow americans i ask for your support for one priceless moment in the whole history of man all the people on this earth are truly one if when the chips are down the world's most powerful nation the united states of america acts like a pitiful helpless giant the forces of totalitarianism and anarchy will threaten free nations and free institutions throughout the world [Music] event that occurred in san jose yesterday the thousand demonstrators outside demonstrators were hurled bottles and rocks and bricks wiped windows damaged the president's car damaged the buses injured some of the people in those buses no band of violent thugs is going to keep me from going out and speaking with the american people whenever they want to hear me and whenever i want to go we just completed the 90-day freeze now i understand there's been some disagreement about whether that freeze worked it was a remarkable success and so it was worth doing and if you don't think so go home and ask your wives who go to the groceries knowing of president nixon's expressed desire to visit the people's republic of china premier cho and lai has extended an invitation to president nixon to visit china at an appropriate date as we look at this wall we do not want walls of any kind between peoples but i would say as i look at the wall it's worth coming sixteen thousand miles just to stand here and see the wall [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] my strong point if i have a strong point is performance i always do more than i say i always produce more than i promise i order the following measures which are being implemented as i am speaking to you all entrances to north vietnamese ports will be mined let us therefore unite as a nation in a firm and wise policy of real peace not the peace of surrender but peace with honor four years ago standing in this very place i proudly accepted your nomination for president of the united states let us pledge ourselves to win an even greater victory this november and life is about to do we believe that peace is at hand in a matter of weeks or less i think the future is politics always as far as my husband is concerned if we're not campaigning for ourselves we will be campaigning for other good candidates [Music] thanks for making our last campaign the very best one of all in recent months members of my administration and officials of the committee for the re-election of the president including some of my closest friends and most trusted aides have been charged with involvement in what has come to be known as the watergate affair i know that this is not the last of the smears i first learned from news reports of the watergate break-in i was appalled at this senseless illegal action i condemn any attempts to cover up in this case no matter who is no one is involved the law and we're going to enforce the law in any organization the man at the top must bear the responsibility well his reaction is that um since he did nothing wrong was not part of the cover-up that um little purpose would be served in stepping aside that to presidents meetings and conversations in the white house have been recorded since the spring of 1971 if i were to make public these tapes containing as they do blunt and candid remarks on many different subjects the confidentiality of the office of the president would always be suspect from now on i have no prior knowledge of the watergate breakhead i neither took part in nor knew about any of the subsequent cover-up activities i neither authorized nor encouraged subordinates to engage in illegal or improper campaign tactics that was and that is the simple truth the american people deserve to have a vice president who commands their unimpaired confidence and implicit trust for more than two months now you have not had such a vice president my fellow americans i proudly present to you the vice president of the united states congressman gerald ford of michigan tonight i would like to give my answer to those who have suggested that i resign i have no intention whatever of walking away from the job i was elected to do i have never heard or seen such outrages vicious distorted reporting in 27 years of public life i'm not blaming anybody for that i welcome this kind of examination because people have got to know whether or not their president is a crook well i'm not a crook i've earned everything i've got i think probably most of the trouble he has is the fact that he's never been able to be one of the boys now i've seen him on occasion uh sort of let his hair down and there's no more delightful man in the world no more communicative man than richard nixon is when you catch him in those few rare moments when he isn't measuring every single word he says or every gesture he makes i'm confident that the american people will see these transcripts for what they are fragmentary records from a time more than a year ago that now seems very distant mr cohen hi mr rodino hi the house judiciary committee has just approved its first article of impeachment against [Music] standard joke let me see that if you get these lights properly my eyes always have they were fine if they get it doesn't pass 60 that's enough thanks i have never been a quitter to leave office before my term is completed is abhorrent to every instinct in my body i don't believe that i ought to quit because i'm not a quitter and incidentally pat's not a quitter after all her name was patricia ryan and she was born on st patrick's day and you know the irish never quit i shall resign the presidency effective at noon tomorrow but the greatness comes and you're really tested when you take some knocks some disappointments when sadness comes because only if you've been in the deepest valley can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain my fellow americans our long national nightmare is over our constitution works our great republic is a government of laws and not of men here the people rule fascinating boy you want to talk about a uh look at a man his vice presidency his presidency um there you go a bunch of uh little news segments and uh different things of him um pretty great i'm not sure what braverman's up to he supposedly did a whole thing about the beatles which it's very similar but you better believe there's no way i'm going to be able to show that even if i had a copy of it uh anyways uh let's see what we got here uh this is a fascinating film um this is called face of lincoln and basically we have a sculptor who is sculpting lincoln's head kind of in real time while telling his story so here's face of lincoln enjoy [Music] the life of abraham lincoln has inspired the world you've heard the ministers talk of his christ-like deeds the lawyers of his legal ability i would like to speak to you as a sculptor knows lincoln we know what lincoln looked like we have this life mask taken by leonard volk the chicago sculptor about 30 days before lincoln's nomination for the presidency this gives us the exact proportion of lincoln's features it is difficult face for the artist because it is based on two curves it not only curves from the crown of the head through the forehead and back into the chin but it also curves off to the right hand side about 3 8 of an inch that makes the two sides very different on this left side it's stretched giving it that firm shrewd look that we associate with lincoln's legal ability while this side the relaxed muscle produced the protruding lower lip the droop in the corner of the mouth this is the gentler side of lincoln the humanitarian and the philosopher while we study the face of lincoln we would like to begin with this egg-shaped mast because most human heads are egg shaped and while this you watch this head develop let us run over the events of lincoln's life that changed this face he'd come into illinois with his family as a boy 19 it helped them get relocated he had cut the rails for the fence he was now 21 and ready to go out from the world only seeing the boys working in the woodlot asked them to go down the mississippi on a flat boat taking a produce from that end of the country [Music] the boys met mister orphan near springfield as by appointment but they found no flat boat it was in the tree stage mr orfet offered the boys twelve dollars a month each to go out into the timber cut through trees bring them in helping the construction of the boat a month later they were on their way down the sangamong river towards the mississippi the trip down the mississippi made a lasting impression on the young lincoln while there the boys stayed in a boarding house directly across the street from the slave market now lincoln had heard slavery argued up and down all of his life but he had never seen it in its worst form of men and women being sold like cattle he is supposed to have said if i have a chance i'll hit that thing hard little did this boy dream that he was a future emancipator the boys worked their passage back by stoking the boiler of a steamboat it was a wood-burning craft when they ran out of fuel they tied the boat to the bank went up into the woods cut more timber and brought it down and then chugged on for a few more miles getting off the boat at the port of st louis the boys walked 100 miles back to the little village of new salem where lincoln had been promised a job as a clerk in the store which mr orphan intended to open there lincoln was disappointed upon arriving in new salem to find the store also in the tree stage he helped cut the timber construct the two-room log cabin the store was in the front room lincoln's living quarters in the back room lincoln had hardly gotten started at his merchandising career until a black hawk war broke out the governor called for all able-bodied men between the age of 18 and 45 to report duty lincoln was with that group of boys who gathered in a cut-over field near beardstown to organize and to elect temporary officers until they would be taken into federal service you'd think that they were getting ready for a baseball game rather than a war lincoln and a much older man nominated for captain sent to the opposite ends of the field at the drop of the hat the rest of the company ran towards the man that they under whom they wish to serve three-quarters of the company gathered around lincoln this was his first election and it gave him more real satisfaction than any election he ever won so he told friends later lincoln noyes referred to the black hawk war as a three months camping trip he said he saw no bloodthirsty indians but he saw many bloodthirsty mosquitoes he is credited with having saved the life of an old indian who came into their camp by standing off the mob of militia boys who were all for lynching him returning to new salem after the three months experience as a soldier he became a store owner he and mr berry formed a partnership and bought not only one store but the contents of two others which were folding up there's no cash involved it was only paid for and eleven hundred dollars a promissory notes lincoln as postmaster had access to all the periodicals that came in he read the weekly gazette before he handed it over to the addressee no one minded he also developed a habit of carrying things in his hat when he saw the party to whom they were dressed he lost his hat and handed their letter this habit followed him throughout his life carrying things in his hat the lincolnbury store winked out as lincoln called it lincoln was too interested in the books he was studying law and the classics and they say mr barry was too interested in the liquid stock so pretty soon the lincolnberry store had closed mr berry abscounted leaving lincoln with the entire eleven hundred dollars indebtedness which lincoln called the national debt fifteen years later it paid off the last of the full indebtedness with interest after the black hawk war lincoln had run for the office a representative for the state legislature he lost that election but he received all of the votes except three in the area in which he electioneered so now two years later he tried again and this time he won in spite of the indebtedness for the store negan had no difficulty in boring two hundred dollars to get fitted out for the job in the state legislature in vandega he always had good friends who had confidence in him there was a distinguished group of men in that state legislature among them was stephen a douglas the little giant as he was called by his admirers this man was to be lincoln's rival throughout his career right up to the very door of the white house here lincoln learned his first lessons in practical politics he was re-elected and served a second term we should stop here and talk to the women in lincoln's life we know that he fell in love with anne rutledge that she passed on very suddenly it was a grievous bow to this boy of 23 he had what we would call a nervous breakdown but his good friends the bowling dreams took him out to their farm for this summer where he had time to make it an emotional adjustment and was ready to take up his work in the fall and go back to the state legislature yes he had ears if any feature of lincoln's is too large it's his ears but we're seldom worried about the size of lincoln's ears he also had hair it was coarse black hair and a lot of it it's usually in a disheveled condition because he had a habit of running his fingers through it before he made one of his famous jokes now they came to springfield a young lady by the name of mary todd she was a southern belle she came to visit her social elite relatives the edwards she was much sought after by all the swain of the countryside including lincoln they were engaged and some of the friends kidded her about abe lincoln she said that she was going to marry a future president there's a woman the intuition that told her that this man who still had something in the smell of the soil about him with a future president they were engaged and 18 months later were married they went to the old globe tavern to begin their married life where they paid four dollars a week for room and board now we assume that must have been very good room and board because mrs lincoln was used to the best and she was a very fastidious person about this time we have lincoln elected to the national congress as representative on the whig ticket he serves his two years he learns his first lesson in national politics then returns to springfield to begin the longest period of law practice uninterrupted by politics in his entire career he not only practices in his office in springfield but he rides the circuit as they call it throughout the center part of the state he is retained by local lawyers because of his ability to handle juries is considered the finest trial lawyer in the state he is also becoming an important corporation lawyer he's argued more cases before the illinois supreme court than any other man of his period lincoln is drawn back into politics for the second time he's pitted against his old rival stephen a douglas for a seat in the united states senate they arranged the lincoln douglas debates because douglas is advocating the extension of slavery into the territories of kansas nebraska lincoln won the popular majority but douglas won the seat because the election really took place in the state legislature the lincoln douglas debates brought lincoln national reputation who was this backwoods lawyer who had argued so brilliantly against the extension of slavery he was invited east to lecture and he was invited to the west the following june he is nominated for the presidency and the following fall he is elected states went out of their union when they heard that abe lincoln of illinois was president he usually wore neckties they were never straight they were always crooked during the four months as president-elect we see a marked change in lincoln's face he begins to grow the lincoln beard we do not know why he adopted this style but there is interesting correspondence on the subject in the pile of mail coming into the president-elect he saw one morning one envelope in childish handwriting it was from a little girl by name of grace bedell she said she had seen his picture on the campaign posters and thought he'd be a great deal better looking if he wore some whiskers he asked if he would have his little daughter answered if he was too busy he was so delighted with this childish frankness that he said he would answer it himself he wrote to grace saying that he was sorry that he didn't have a little daughter to answer her kind letter but he had three fine boys and conclusion as for the whiskers do you not think that my friends might consider them a silly affectation if i began wearing them now since i've never worn them before when that presidential special went through the little town of westfield new york after making usual remarks from the rear platform of the train lincoln said i have a little correspondent in this town i wonder if she's present grace bedell was handed up to him he took her in his big arms and kissed her said see grace and let the whiskers grow for you grace wriggled out of his arms as quickly as she could ran home to tell her mother what had happened she looked down at her hand and there was the stem of flower that she had expected to give to the president [Music] it was a very big whiskered gentleman that arrived in washington early in february the confederacy had been formed the country was disintegrated in his inaugural address lincoln had appealed for brotherly consideration of their mutual problems it was answered six weeks later when the guns fired on fort sumter [Music] now what would this gorilla from illinois do that's what his own cabinet minister called him he called for the 75 000 volunteers the war was on now we see the history of the civil war etched deeply into this face many blamed him for keeping the war going the others blamed him for not making it go fast enough criticism of him was victronic how can that man stand in the white house and crack jokes while the country is bleeding to death they carped lincoln said what a strange fate it is for me a man who never had the nerve to even kill a chicken standing here figuratively surrounded with blood the lines grow deeper three long years one general follows another as one disaster follows another disaster for the northern armies then finally out of the west came that dogged scrapper ulysses s grant he brought pressure all along the line lee the brilliant lee could no longer shift his dwindling reserves from one front to meet the yankees on the next front deeper grow the lines in this face more hollow the cheeks and then about this time we have a marked change in his appearance he changes his part to the right side i don't suppose he did it just this way but we have three profile pictures by brady that show it parted from his right side over to the left his hair is receding on his head he has lost 20 pounds in his last six months of his spare 167 his beard is growing thinner too [Music] grant fought on month after month till applematics [Music] the good news finally came lee had surrendered the north was delirious with joy crowds trooped onto the white house grounds and demanded a speech lincoln came out reluctantly he said he was not prepared to give them a speech he thought all the honor was due those brave officers and men who had had the harder part then turning to the band master he said we have a new tomb one might say by the right of capture one of the best tunes ever heard will a band please play dixie during the week of celebration mrs lincoln arranged a theater party it was a tired old man that sat in the box that night at ford theater his friends were worried about him you know the rest of the story you know how the assassin's bullet forever turned this face from us but the spirit of abraham lincoln lives on wherever there's a struggle for human freedom his deeds are remembered his words are quoted let us be as determined as he was that government of the people by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth [Music] oh wow was uh my mic on that whole time i hope not uh anyways uh let's see let's see if we can squeeze even more presidents in uh we're gonna go long but that's okay here's uh american president enjoy [Music] and shrine forever in the archives of america's history will be those great men who have guided our country to her destiny as leader of the world's free nations here then are our presidents george washington first in war first in peace his grateful countrymen called him to be their first president john adams first president to live in the white house thomas jefferson author of the declaration of independence james madison jefferson's secretary of state twice elected to the presidency [Music] monroe fifth president he formulated the monroe doctrine john quincy adams scholar statesman son of president john adams andrew jackson colorful old hickory the people's president martin van buren first president born an american citizen william henry harrison the gallant old indian fighter who died a month after his inauguration john tyler first vice president to succeed to the presidency [Music] james k pope his administration saw texas admitted to the union zachary taylor old rough and ready found the slavery issue splitting the nation millard fillmore affected a temporary solution by signing the compromise of 1850 franklin pierce 14th president of the 31 united states james buchanan despite his efforts the country drifted toward civil war abraham lincoln he preserved the union and his immortal words are still reverently read at the lincoln memorial with malice toward none with charity for all let us bind up the nation's wounds [Music] a gentle father a forgiving victor a humble leader andrew johnson to him fell the momentous problems of reconstruction ulysses s grand a brilliant general for eight years he led america at peace brother b hayes 19th president of a nation now grown to 39 states james garfield victim of an assassin's bullet four months after taking office chester arthur a champion of civil service reform in government [Music] grover cleveland only president to serve two non-consecutive terms in the white house benjamin harrison grandson of the ninth president william henry harrison william mckinley 24th president was assassinated while visiting the pan-american exposition in buffalo in 1901 and now for the first time a new invention the motion picture camera records the inauguration of a president mckinley rides to the capitol on a blustery march day a year later he was to guide america in the war with spain [Music] theodore roosevelt returned from the spanish-american war a national idol and when mckinley was assassinated he became our youngest president these were busy exciting years for america now becoming a world power the panama canal was started pure food legislation passed conservation furthered the dynamic old rough rider steered the ship of state with a resolute forceful hand long after his seven years as president were over he remained in the public spotlight a respected and beloved figure william howard taft a portly jovial personality with an infectious chuckle was the successor theodore roosevelt picked to carry on the policy started by him taft was the only president to later serve as chief justice of the supreme court but while america continued to prosper during his administration war clouds were blowing across the face of europe [Music] woodrow wilson became president in 1913 war erupted in europe a year later america entered in 1917. when the war was won wilson sailed for france to receive there a heartfelt welcome at the peace conference he worked tirelessly to weld the covenant of the league of nations into the versailles treaty the president returned to america and knew a claim from his own people still more honors were heaped upon him for his labors for peace he was awarded the nobel prize but his endeavors had taken a severe toll although in health the president continued to toil with his remaining energies for lasting world peace warren g harding embarked the country on the job of returning to a peacetime footing his easy-going cordiality was exemplified by his campaign conducted mainly from the front porch of his home in marion ohio in 1923 the nation mourned his passing [Music] calvin coolidge a man of simple manners and few words conscientious and scrupulously honest succeeded to the presidency the first family shunned the spotlight with the shrewd conservatism instilled by his new england parents coolidge carefully guided the united states with his wife by his side through an era of prosperity and rare good feeling herbert hoover had won wide respect for his relief work in europe after world war one his were an eventful four years in the white house there was a worldwide depression japan sent troops into manchuria adolf hitler began his rise to power in germany the seeds were being sown for world war ii franklin delano roosevelt energetic progressive had been wilson's assistant secretary of navy and vice presidential candidate before infantal paralysis threatened his brilliant career but he overcame the crippling illness was elected governor of new york nominated for the presidency and elected overwhelmingly america was fighting for her life in world war ii when roosevelt elected for an unprecedented third term visited american troops in north africa the pendulum of victory already was swinging to the allies but the president was not to see germany and japan surrender three months after beginning a fourth term death claimed america's commander-in-chief harry s truman took the presidential oath in the greenwald cabinet room of the white house from chief justice holland f stone of the supreme court reverently he asked friends give me your prayers truman's career was the realization of the great american dream the country boy who became president his friendly manner made americans feel he was plain folks dwight d eisenhower sincere and vigorous a man in any cloth soldier educator or statesman architect of victory in europe in world war ii he swept the forces of hitler to total defeat he returned home and his own people took him to their hearts in new york he waved happily as a storm of confetti and ticker tape swirled down around him he was a man of the hour a leader in civilian life as president of colombia pike championed the cause of freedom then nato called him and in one short year he made a lies out of old enemies and helped unify western europe home again general eisenhower engaged in the biggest battle of his career the battle for the white house and won an emphatic victory dwight david eisenhower 33rd president another chapter may it be a bright one in the glorious and continuing well happy presidents day everybody uh had a lot of stuff to show you and very excited um to show it i mean that face of lincoln is kind of longish but it's it's fascinating if you can if your attention span can bear it it's really something because he over a period of time lincoln changes and so he changes the sculpture so it's uh it's really quite uh soothing uh very bob ross ish uh in my mind i just watched the bob ross documentary on netflix wonderful wonderful wonderful man um his ru his legacy was utterly ruined due to money but he is still this phenomenal um being um that i used
