av geeks lunchtime streaming show uh yes i showed this film on friday but uh it basically highlighted the fact that i was having some serious problems with my setup my obs mac imac setup was just not great the webcam wasn't great and then i was getting a lot of audio stuttering uh and the computer was just chugging so i decided to upgrade it uh to a newer mac that we have here at av geeks that we were using for another purpose and kind of shuffled some macs around so everything is a little bit from scratch so uh the fonts different like what i wrote is different because i was trying to like copy things over and change things anyways uh happy valentine's day or happy vd day uh so yeah uh traditionally with av geeks we either show films about love and courtship or we show films about venereal disease as we have a giant collection of films about vd so here we go vd venereal disease it's now called sexually transmitted infections stis used to be stds are more common than mumps and measles enjoy [Music] what's so funny it's no laughing matter slick who me you can do the entire project and report it to the class what about goon he's not here you can both do it we've got to do a project on but everybody knows about vd we have to do research researcher not a bad idea at the library so what's there to research oh how you get it symptoms that kind of thing but i know how you get a toilet seat shaking hands doorknobs eating utensils [Music] we better check it out at the library anyway [Music] how do you spell vd it's venereal disease i hope they have a book on it [Music] yeah they do have a book on it [Music] let's start with these ones on history bd is the term used for venereal disease the two most common forms of vd are syphilis and granuloma ingrenali and lumpy granola venereum it says here that gonorrhea was known in the orient 5 000 years ago i guess they had to worry about it even then so did the ancient arabs [Music] and the romans here's something about syphilis it says here they're not exactly sure where it came from [Music] they have found evidence of what may have been syphilis in egyptian remains [Music] there's another theory that columbus discovered syphilis along with america land hole [Music] the theory goes on to say that his crew brought syphilis back to europe [Music] in any case there was a terrible outbreak of syphilis at the end of the 15th century hey this book says except in rare instances the only way a person can be infected with venereal disease is through sexual contact you can't pick it up from toilet seats or doorknobs or any of those other things have you found out anything about symptoms or treatment yeah but i can't understand most of it i can't even pronounce it maybe some doctor could explain it to us yeah i think there's even a vd clinic we could go to well let's call for an appointment okay [Music] [Music] can i make an appointment to see the doctor there are no appointments it's first come first test in a urine sample honest we're just doing research oh well you might as well see the doctor now that you're here he'll be through soon so you can see him in a few minutes what do you boys want to know oh symptoms of vd treatment that kind of thing vd is very dangerous indeed these little vd germs can cause sterility they can [ __ ] and cause insanity they can also cause blindness and even death and it can be passed on to unborn babies but it can be cured if we catch it in time how do you know if you've gotten with syphilis sores may appear in the genital area although the sores often disappear the germs spread right through the system to affect the heart the mind or any part of the body gonorrhea is a local infection there may be pain during urination or a discharge of pus if you expect there's anything wrong in a genital area go to a doctor or a clinic at once with girls it's different a woman usually doesn't get the same noticeable symptoms so the disease may have caused considerable damage before she even knows she's infected the only way to be sure is to have a thorough doctor's examination but if she doesn't know she's got it why would she go to a doctor that's a problem unless she finds out that her husband or boyfriend has venereal disease or unless an infected person names her as a contact she may be unaware that she had the disease for a very long time and she may spread it to others without knowing it that is why someone with vd must name everyone he has had sexual contact with even homosexual contact that's the only way we can hope to fight the disease it's getting more difficult to control all the time as you can see vd is steadily increasing and it is more common than measles and mumps and all these other diseases why is it spreading so fast prostitution and promiscuity make it very difficult to control as a person with a great many sexual contacts can spread the disease before he even knows he has it and remember don't try to treat yourself only a physician is qualified to treat venereal disease and if it's not treated properly you're in trouble vd is usually treated with antibiotics such as penicillin but sometimes more than one dose is required so treatment must be followed up you aren't cured until the doctor says so and you're never immune you can always catch it again you can pick up pamphlets from your local public health department as well as at the clinic if you want more detailed information thanks a lot i didn't know there was so much to learn about vdd just wait till we tell them you can't get it off toilet seats hey slick yeah groon i thought everybody got measles and mumps [Music] so slick and goon were their names somebody pointed out it did one of them had a bobcat gold wife kind of sound uh anyways that's uh one of many animated films i have about venereal disease my favorite is one that i would love to show but just not going to be able to show on facebook and youtube it is uh vd attack plan which is a disney film which is really a good vd film it's really amazing and so maybe one day when we uh broadcast via on something that's not youtube or facebook uh we will show that and that's something i've been thinking about this year in the spring doing that sometime uh all right um in keeping with uh vd day uh this is a film that was made uh i feel like this is on the like just as world war one or world war ii was getting going uh this is with these weapons it's about syphilis made one of the most important medical discoveries of the century he discovered the spirocheta palidar the germ of syphilis syphilis the greatest plague of modern times the positive identification of the syphilis germ was the first great step toward the conquest of this devastating disease as a mason builds a house stone on stone so science builds knowledge on knowledge bit by bit only a year after the discovery of the syphilis germ border and wasserman developed and gave the world the first blood test for syphilis syphilis could be diagnosed then four years later in 1910 paul ehrlich in his 606th experiment produced salvation now called arsphenamine this drug when injected into the body kills the syphilis germ ehrlich's brilliant success crowned the achievements of shaodin bordeaux and wasserman syphilis could be cured but medical science never satisfied marches on treatment was further improved in 1922 levaditi found that bismuth aids in the cure of syphilis hundreds of other scientists added to medical knowledge until today the diagnosis and treatment of syphilis are efficient procedures known to physicians everywhere [Music] in spite of the fact that a cure for syphilis has been known for 30 years syphilis today is one of the most prevalent of serious diseases a leading cause of sickness and death in america more than six million people have syphilis one in 20 there are a million new cases every year why certainly its terrible work can be seen everywhere syphilis strikes infants kills thousands when it does not kill it may cause blindness deafness insanity or deformity in adults syphilis is a leading cause of heart disease it strikes men and women in the prime of life makes many helpless influence its victims help fill the ever expanding institutions for the insane it breaks up homes causes many divorces wars syphilis kills more than wars fires syphilis costs more than fires floods or famines why why when physicians everywhere can diagnose and treat syphilis do we permit this pale spiral germ to continue its devastation the answer is ignorance ignorance is the greatest ally of syphilis the rich are penalized by lack of knowledge as well as the poor both suffer because they have not learned the simple hopeful truth about syphilis that it can be cured and its spread can be prevented fortunately times are changing newspapers are aiding the campaign against ignorance the radio is presenting the facts to millions literature is being distributed and read speakers are instructing thousands so that they will be able to protect themselves and others from syphilis [Music] anyone who thinks he has syphilis should go at once to a physician because only a physician can diagnose syphilis early symptoms are sometimes so slight that they may pass unnoticed the disease develops insidiously years sometimes elapse before it makes itself known a knowledge of the patient's history is the first step in diagnosis then follows a thorough physical examination if sores are found as is often the case in early syphilis a dark field microscope is used to determine whether or not the germs are present an essential part of any examination for syphilis is a blood test the doctor takes a sample of the patient's blood seals it in a sterile tube and sends it to a laboratory there the delicate and complicated test is applied the results are checked and then recorded on individual cards only a physician can interpret the results of the tests when syphilis is found treatment must begin at once early treatment is the patient's great hope of recovery cases discovered in the early stages can usually be made non-infectious and completely cured even in neglected cases the disease can often be arrested and suffering relieved modern treatment usually consists of injections of some form of osphenamine and bismuth which can be taken without interfering with the patient's daily work treatments must be taken regularly and persistently injections over a period of a year or longer may be required for permanent results the patient must also follow the doctor's orders as to food proper rest and particularly his precautions for protecting the health of others for syphilis is a catching disease especially in its early stage transmitted nearly always by close body contact it spreads from man to woman from woman to man from husband to wife and often from mother to unborn child as it claims its million victims a year since any syphilis infection is always linked to one or more others doctor and patient must cooperate to bring under medical care the person who is spreading infections for treatment makes syphilis non-infectious the treatment of a single case may prevent the suffering disability and perhaps the death of no one knows how many others [Music] with the medical profession as the spearhead of the attack the fight against syphilis is well begun physicians are more alert than ever to discover and treat infections in all persons under their care free clinics hospitals and health departments provide medical care for those who can afford to pay only small fees or nothing at all health agencies contribute by helping to trace infections and by teaching syphilis victims how to prevent the spread of infection many states now require that every expectant mother be examined and her blood tested for syphilis a most important step for it is one of the miracles of medicine that modern treatment prevents the transmission of syphilis from mother to unborn child an increasing number of states require that before marriage both bride and groom have an examination including a blood test for syphilis and similar laws are being pushed in other states for government has found that millions now spent for the support of institutions for victims of syphilis can be saved industry two is beginning to realize that war against syphilis is tremendously important compensation costs costly accidents and labor turnover often chargeable to syphilis can be reduced and so many industries are encouraging infected employees to secure treatment but the work has only begun there is much to do government and citizens have a tremendous task ahead schools have a responsibility to teach youth the way syphilis is contracted before the age of 30. churches can do much by instilling high ideals parents can guide protect and instruct growing children communities can provide facilities for wholesome play and communities too must enforce laws which protect youth from degrading conditions yes there is much to be done but thanks to medical science thanks to research workers physicians and public health leaders all of the weapons for a successful war against syphilis are at hand syphilis can be diagnosed it can be made non-infectious it can be cured only one more thing is needed to defeat the germs of syphilis knowledge of the facts by every man and woman with widespread knowledge and with these weapons america can conquer syphilis in one generation [Music] so i used to work for the american social health association which originally was the american social hygiene association which made that film uh along with uh willard films willard pictures um and what's interesting is this is during a time when uh we're talking about the war against venereal disease and so it's about weapons and it's about uh fighting for victory and all that stuff um it it changes over a period of time and that's why i like the disney film vd attack plan because it really is in that kind of setting of a men's lecture in an army um in an army setting uh they're being lectured about fighting the upcoming battle in the human body uh pretty great okay so here's another military training film and i hope i am hoping that there's no explicit uh genitalia in this i am going to be standing by um and hopefully can um uh stop it if it gets to that point but i kind of quickly scanned it but this is vd taking chances enjoy [Music] [Music] is [Music] liberty another payday liberty for his time after a long cruise many of our men are sure tonight all good men i ought to know [Music] i've seen him in action [Music] this drake third class pretty good man and mercy been in the navy about eight or nine years knows his way around swanson well he's the easy going type solid as a rocket gibraltar and just as dependable and on every liberty there are a couple of men like adams and kennedy who don't know what to do with themselves kennedy now he's a bit green and adams well when they separate the men from the boys he'll probably be with the boys [Applause] [Music] ah this isn't what you'd call a rough port but medical officers can expect casualties from every liberty party cut heads that can bottle stuff and vd i wonder who'll get into trouble tonight not draco bet he should have learned to use his head by now but it wasn't so very long ago we just dropped the hook in our home foot sure enough drake like everybody else wanted to get ashore fast so when the chief told him tough stuff he had to stay aboard he got in to see me took a bit of convincing that the navy never gambles when it comes to controlling the spread of disease gonorrhea is infectious drake thought he'd been cured by that first shot we'd given him a few days before i explained one single shot didn't mean we were 100 sure he was cured even with our new medicines we can't be absolutely certain that's why keeping him aboard was protection for others i guess when he first came in to see his drake was chipping his teeth he noticed typical drip from his penis but he couldn't believe he'd actually caught the clap said that he'd wash well with soap and water as soon as he could [Music] well washing does help but at best it gets off only the germs on the outside but what about the gonorrhea germs that got inside soap and water doesn't stop those fellas gonorrhea germs are tricky short time after they entered drake's penis perhaps in a matter of minutes that little chance drake thought he took became a big chance because they multiplied really multiplied until there were thousands of them same kind of a thing happens in a woman but she may not know it drake said he urinated right afterward well that probably washed out some of the germs but certainly not all of them any more than a dozen douches a day would wash the gonorrhea germs out of a woman's body those that were left kept on multiplying in the lining of the urine canal buried there in the soft lining where urine couldn't wash them out or prophylactic chemicals couldn't get at them germs sprayed in the lining irritated and formed sewers and it's those sores that caused the pus discharge and drip which is usually the first sign [Music] it was a good thing drake was smart enough to come into sickbay as soon as he noticed that drip by reporting early it avoided complications and lucky for him we were able to cure him drake might have prevented the germs from getting inside his body by using a shield the doctor protects himself from germs when he examines his sewer of course the only sure protection against vd is to avoid exposure well i think maybe drake has learned about taking chances not that adam's though he still has a lot to learn he hasn't been burned yet he's probably got dolls on his mind tonight and he's the type that's liable to take almost any kind of a chance [Applause] [Music] mercer was a gambler too once only mercer found out he picked up something far more serious than gonorrhea [Music] must have been all of six months ago [Music] that second examination showed just what i suspected mercer had really lost the gamble it was syphilis [Music] and he didn't even have sense enough to blame himself it was the same old story she looked clean but mercer forgot that no one can see the germs and swords inside the woman's body we had positive proof that those germs by then were inside mercy [Music] syphilis germs from that sewer on mercer's penis as in gonorrhea it may take only a few minutes for syphilis germs to penetrate during sexual intercourse a few minutes but by the time mercer noticed that little sewer on his penis there were millions of syphilis germs all through his body with syphilis the big question always is what damage are they going to do if they lodge in the spine [Music] they can [ __ ] for life when the germs strike the eyes blindness when they settle in the brain insanity [Music] and when they attack the heart death [Music] naturally mercer was bloody worried but we told him none of those things need happened to him he'd reported properly after noticing his sword at least it used his head that time so with prompt reporting modern treatment and proper follow-up we have a very good chance of curing him continued periodic tests will show us for sure if mess is okay we certainly find out that his health isn't something to gamble with anyhow they know the facts now it's up to them wish they were all like swanson he didn't need to get burned to learn just good common sense but adam's i'm not so sure about him or kennedy then [Music] after all it's their liberty it's up to them what they do with it a lot depends on the type of people they meet [Music] man with dolls on his mind can always find somebody to help him make up his mind make a choice between sticking with his own buddies or taking a chance i wonder if adams and kennedy is smart enough to lose [Music] 1852 for that um so post world war ii uh and uh definitely antibiotics and penicillin were being used by that point um and so men could get a shot after they were exposed there was also called something called prophylaxis which were either using condoms or there was this chemical bag that you would put your privates in and it would fizzle and it would kill supposedly the uh bacteria or the microbes that caused the various uh venereal diseases uh fascinating um and and also the the whole take you're taking your chance the whole roulette wheel or the uh the wheel of fortune uh that shows up in the vd attack plan film too and i keep talking about uh disney film um and uh yeah i this was not explicit but i did censor out the silhouette of the sailors privates so there you go trying to play it safe trying to play it safe here on uh any geeks where we watch old 16 millimeter films like this i don't know if i even said that at the beginning some of you are watching this and going like what is this guy doing what does ball pit mean all that's all these questions um so watching this film might answer some of those questions here's uh and this one has a couple of great [Music] stand by one breakout okay brace yourself for some facts we're going to talk about syphilis the most dangerous of all the venereal diseases if left untreated there are three stages to syphilis or bad blood as it's sometimes called first stage 10 to 90 days after exposure a painless sore may develop in the genital area in the female the sore may be internal and go unnoticed second stage two weeks to six months later a rash or sores may appear on any part of the body other symptoms can be fever and a general sickish feeling third stage the symptoms go underground and the germ goes into work in some many nasty ways untreated syphilis can cause severe birth defects heart disease blindness insanity and death so be sensible at the first sign or symptom or even if you just suspect you have it go to your public health center or to your private doctor immediately and just thank your lucky stars there is a cure oh i say old chap if you suspected that someone had dropped a bit of arsenic into this lovely dish what would you say thanks but no thanks there are other kinds of tempting dishes now if the thought went to your head that this lovely creature might just have a bit of syphilis or a tiny thing of gonorrhea or maybe a touch of herpes what would you say old chap thanks but no thanks the moral of the story no your dishes [Music] there's nothing two okay it's back time again gonorrhea often known as drip clap dose or strain is the most common of the venereal diseases the symptoms in the mail two to eight days after exposure may be irritation or discharge in the female two to eight days after exposure there may also be irritation or discharge however in the female the infection often progresses without any noticeable symptom gonorrhea if untreated may cause sterility blindness arthritis and severe internal damage to both male and female so be sensible at the first sign or symptom or even if you may suspect that you have it or that your sex partner may have it go immediately to your public health center or your private doctor just thank your lucky stars there is a cure if you think you've got vd don't walk run to the nearest health center and bring your sex partner with you [Music] the perfect vd preventative is the word no [Music] bob and beth are a twosome [Music] bob's got gonorrhea he gives it to beth bob goes for treatment beth reinfects him [Music] beth goes for treatment bob reinfects her [Music] ping pong is fun but not played with vd steady partners should be treated at the same time to avoid reinfecting each other fact time again genital herpes is a nasty disease which is presently spreading like wildfire especially among teenagers and don't let anyone kid you it is very catching herpes symptoms come on from three to twenty days after having sex with an infected person the symptoms start with itching followed by clusters of fluid filled blisters the blisters can be very painful and when they break they form running sores usually the sores go away after two to four weeks however in many people a virus has just become dormant and the symptoms can start all over again generally when it comes back and it can come back often the attacks are not as bad as the first time the herpes virus is spread during sexual intercourse particularly if sores are present therefore you should not and i repeat not have sexual intercourse until all the sores are healed that means every time the blisters appear no sex until they are all healed [Music] a gift of herpes is forever [Music] for boys who want a guarantee to nix the chance of team vd when girls say please unzip my dress just firm your lips and don't say yes i think i've got vd what'll i do get a free confidential examination at your local health clinic what'll they do to me you will be asked questions about how you feel previous diseases and when and with whom you have had sex sue this is a speculum we use this to examine you will then be examined by a doctor if syphilis or gonorrhea is suspected a specimen is collected and examined under a microscope a cul-de-sac there that's all that wasn't so bad was it a routine blood test for syphilis will be taken if the results are positive you will be treated with one or more injections of penicillin or medication taken by mouth are you sure okay i think i'm good it's good oh look the fortune oh great yeah oh i can't wait to dig in you know i always figure these are some sort of dessert they are in the dessert actually not very big i swear well that's that's why chinese people are so thin okay everybody listen i'm going to read my fortune though this ought to be interesting yeah i hope sensible person knows vd is very catchy take care not to have sex with infected person what's it say wise men say young people be careful seventy-five percent of vd cases occur between 15 and 30. hey listen to this you're too smart to drink from a common cup or have sex with someone who hops from bed to bed that's good enough okay guys my turn sure way for young person not to catch vd is wait to have sex until married so true my grandfather used to always say that now listen to this confucius say social hygiene i can't remember they transitioned over to health in the 70s i feel like they were based in new york they had a vd hotline that you could call that's a wonderful film because it uh it really seems like vd is the thing to get if you want to be a happy successful popular person um and it kind of if you think about the advertising you see now for medications for various types of sexually transmitted infections including hiv hepatitis herpes uh you will see the similar types of things of people uh happy uh successful popular enjoying a good life with friends and family and uh so it's really interesting to kind of see that you know one of them is definitely advertising uh a drug that you and your insurance company will be paying for and the other was kind of a general hey there's this thing called vd and maybe you want to know about it um and people under a certain age will have no idea what that means i i did a show where somebody said that their mom used to sing that all the time when she was doing dishes and he had no idea what it was and then i showed it and he was like oh my god that's amazing he had he had been rattling around in his head forever and had no
