so so so so so so welcome everybody i'm skip alzheimer this is the av geeks lunchtime streaming show oh i'm not really highlighting the neon which you can just barely see um anyways so we watch old 16 millimeter films and that was uh some home movies of an epic trip to europe i'm assuming it was all taken same time so this is back when middle class america would take a month or two months off for summer vacation and would travel all the way across the united states or they would go to europe for a month [Music] kind of a magic time uh and i did skip through the bullfighting sequence at the beginning partially because it's the first thing you know that was shown and i didn't have a chance to warn anybody about it uh and also you know it's not great for lunch i'm eating meatballs doesn't quite sit right but uh anyways that's one of the reasons behind that um so uh this next film um nasa when they were uh working on the apollo space program they were doing their um aeronautics space reports and they were also doing the manned space flight quarterly report and this is from spring 1967 so enjoy [Music] [Applause] during the spring months of 1967 a critical review of the nation's manned space flight program was carried out this re-evaluation had been initiated following the apollo spacecraft accident at launch complex 34 cape kennedy in january 1967 the causes were studied and corrective action was taken schedules were adjusted to accommodate the additional work involved the temple of apollo activities picked up as the program recovered at north american aviation downey california astronauts wally sherrah don isley and walter cunningham were formally announced as the prime flight crew for the first apollo mission their backup crew will be tom stafford john young and eugene cernan both crews will train for an earth orbital mission of up to 10 days duration after exhaustive review and inspection the spacecraft for the first manned mission entered modification and pre-flight checkout which proceeded concurrently with additional ground qualification tests of new equipment unlike earlier command and service modules the latest version of the apollo spacecraft has new systems and features required for lunar missions as well as for increased reliability and flight crew safety included in the new equipment are a docking system which will allow the command and lunar modules to be mated in space also a transfer tunnel which will allow the flight crew to pass between modules there is a new quick opening hatch similar to the gemini spacecraft hatch it provides for rapid egress by the crew in case of an emergency on the ground and for extra vehicular operations in space covers and guards will protect display panels and wiring during both pre-flight checkout and flight fireproof containers have been incorporated for stowing potentially flammable materials such as sleeping bags plumbing joints originally comprising an inner teflon sleeve in a soldered aluminum ferrule have been reinforced with a split aluminum collar which is bonded into place and secured with a snap ring in the spacecraft the reinforced joints will help prevent damage to plumbing in addition to these and other changes spacecraft preparation was continuing at the end of june pointing toward checkouts of individual systems later in the summer the major objective for the mission will be to verify the performance of the command and service modules during manned flight meanwhile preparations were intensified for unmanned apollo missions for the first flight lunar module scheduled for an unmanned launch later this year factory checkout operations were carried out following exhaustive reviews and inspections changes and modifications were made to further increase safety and reliability in late june integrated systems tests and factory checkouts were completed the vehicle was prepared for delivery and shipped on june 23 to the kennedy space center florida on board the super guppy aircraft the primary objective for the unmanned mission is to prove out the lunar modules propulsion systems and structures in the space environment the lunar module will be launched by an uprated saturn one which had already been assembled on the pad at complex 37 and checkout operations were in progress preparations for apollo saturn v missions meanwhile continued across the nation at the marshall space flight center in huntsville alabama dynamic testing neared completion for apollo saturn 5. the primary purpose is to prove out the ability of the launch vehicle's guidance and control equipment to function under dynamic conditions like those anticipated for powered flight the completion of dynamic testing will mark the conclusion of major ground qualification testing for the saturn v launch vehicle also at the marshall space flight center a two-day briefing on saturn five's major systems and design features was held for a number of the astronauts in the meantime at the kennedy space center the first apollo saturn v flight vehicle was being prepared for a 1967 unmanned earth orbital mission in line with program requirements for hardware reliability the spacecraft had been removed from the launch vehicle early in the year for an intense review and inspection during the spring months the command module underwent rework and modification after checkout it was mated with a remainder of the spacecraft in preparation for assembly with a launch vehicle at the same time the launch vehicle was being checked out in the vehicle assembly building as a further check for safety and reliability the launch vehicle was disassembled for an unscheduled inspection of the second stage weld seams even though the stage had successfully passed all previous tests including static firing the disassembly and inspection were deemed necessary when surface imperfections were discovered in weld seams in the saturn five-second stage still in manufacturing at north american it was as a precaution against similar defects that the launch vehicle at the kennedy space center was disassembled and its second stage inspected as expected x-ray and die penetrant tests revealed that the stage was acceptable for flight and the launch vehicle was reassembled this was closely followed by remating of the spacecraft with the launch vehicle by the end of june assembly was complete and the launch crew was proceeding with pre-flight checkout of the entire vehicle major objectives of the unmanned missions are to prove out the space vehicle systems and structural integrity during flight and to verify spacecraft heat shielding during re-entry re-entry conditions will approximate those of the lunar mission there were also significant accomplishments in the preparations for the three following apollo saturn v flights at nasa's mississippi test facility a saturn 5 second stage successfully completed a series of two acceptance test firings this stage is a part of the second saturn v flight vehicle [Music] after acceptance firings this stage was shipped to the kennedy space center where it entered pre-flight checkout in the vehicle assembly building the second of two saturn v vehicles then being checked out in the building at the mcdonald douglas sacramento test site in california an acceptance test firing was also successfully completed for a saturn v third stage a replacement for one destroyed earlier the new stage will be used for the third saturn v flight vehicle the destruction of the earlier stage was traced to the failure of a titanium sphere containing helium this was the first such failure and the first loss of a third stage extensive steps were taken to prevent a recurrence manufacturing and testing procedures were made even more stringent all spheres mounted on flight stages both saturn five and uprated saturn one were re-inspected tests were conducted to verify structural integrity all this done mcdonnell douglas proceeded with manufacturing at the mississippi test facility the acceptance firing was successfully completed for a first stage of a saturn v flight vehicle an event of particular significance because it signified the full activation of the test site as the apollo capability continued to develop activities connected with the investigation of the moon also continued langley research center virginia under the direction of the office of space sciences and applications flew two important missions lunar orbiter four and surveyor three [Music] lunar orbiter 4 not only returned photographs of 99 of the moon's face but also gave man his most detailed look at the hidden side 53 hours after this launch from cape kennedy surveyor 3 landed on the moon first bouncing three times it came to rest halfway down the side of a crater 650 feet across and 50 feet deep in the eastern part of oceana's prosalaram surveyor 3 sampled the lunar soil taking pictures of itself at work it provided a look at a lunar sunset indicated by the moving shadows to help determine rock types it returned both black and white and color photographs it was concluded that the lunar surface is lightly cohesive much like fine-grained granular soil on earth with a capability for manned operations in space again developing at full momentum in apollo rapid progress continued in apollo applications the program for capitalizing on the nation's manned space flight capability a full-scale mock-up of the orbital workshop was evaluated at marshall space flight center first by a group of astronauts then by key personnel from the manned space flight centers in a preliminary design review the astronauts simulated efforts necessary to activate the workshop and perform experiments the design approach was found to be acceptable the workshop built by mcdonnell douglas is a modified upgraded saturn one second stage it propels itself into orbit then after preparation it can be occupied by a flight crew entrance into the stage is gained through an airlock under development by mcdonnell douglas st louis missouri prime contractor for the mercury and gemini spacecraft mcdonnell douglas is utilizing its manned space flight experience in developing the airlock also in the program apollo telescope mount instruments for investigations of the sun were being designed and development was initiated for example a prototype x-ray telescope under development by marshall was being tested for alignment and stability and apollo applications instruments for studying the earth from space was the subject of a national academy of science summer study convened at woods hole massachusetts designed to help man make better use of the earth's resources instruments such as camera systems for taking infrared color photographs have been under development for some months photographs similar to these infrared color shots plus many other kinds of data can be acquired from space and will reveal new facts and fields as diverse as geography and meteorology and oceanology at the end of june 1967 the nation's manned space flight program was again moving forward across all fronts reinforced by a period of intense review and reevaluation while the program is even stronger there is yet much to be done many problems to be solved but confidence that our goals in space can be met is growing in parallel with the increasing determination to succeed uh thank you mitch for the coffee um yeah so this report was kind of a recap and uh after the apollo one tragedy and basically saying like this is what we're trying to fix uh and so um you know there's a lot of these films that exist and what i like about them is there's a granularity to talking about all the different aspects of the apollo missions um instead of distilling it down to just footage of you know an astronaut kind of bouncing his way across the lunar landscape i mean that certainly is a wonderful payoff but all the thousands and tens of thousands of man hours and all that stuff prior is all documented it's all out there um and so i'm happy to share it with you uh okay so behind me oh i should say thank you mitch for the coffee um coffee is one we'll we'll see what we can figure out this film is about without watching it or before we watch it alright enjoy me [Music] well maybe i'm not so much of a whittler but it gives me something to do while i wait for a nibble on the fish line and then some folks kid me a lot because i don't catch many fish either i guess i'd just like to get out here with the trees and the sunshine and sort of get in tune with nature it makes me feel like a kid again to snuggle down here in the forest and think about how long some of these trees have been here shucks a lot of these old trees have been around longer than i have and maybe it takes an old duffer like me to realize just how much our way of life depends on the forest so [Applause] [Music] we built a whole new way of life on bands of steel tied to the earth by our forests and we ain't found a better way to hold them down yet we still haven't found anything any better or any prettier to build our houses out of either mighty comfortable on a cold morning our forests warm the pocketbooks of one out of every five wage earners that's thousands of people right here in virginia alone who support their families from the forest yes sir them all pines have earned the right to stand tall and proud and it kind of puts a lump in my throat when i see them old-timers come down just to make room for something else at the end of them they're wires there's probably a shopping center or apartment houses or something else made of concrete and steel but even that's pretty hard to build without paper and thanks to paper we can see the world a little bit better and tell machines how to make it a better place to live in sure we need all the power lines and shopping centers and the like so what we have to do is grow more and better trees on the land that's left and i tell you it's time we got busy because each year we cut more pine than we're growing but our forests are a natural resource that can be renewed that means that when we older fellers are gone [Applause] we can be replaced with new life to keep things going but if someone doesn't take time to provide that new life life will vanish with no hope of ever getting it back virginia is now 64 forest land but if we don't do something and assume it could be one day 64 wasteland how can we keep virginia green beautiful and prosperous ask a virginia forester well mr rogers you have a fine stand of timber here and now that we've completed our survey i'd like to go over our recommendations for improving your timber stand i'm interested in knowing what you've found this is a timberland examination map it separates your land into sections according to our findings in each area your pine in this area is in need of a thinning the idea is to remove the inferior trees so that the remaining trees will have room to grow this way we get much better timber faster what timber stand improvement really amounts to is whittling away at the rough trees to produce something more useful you mean a lot of my trees over here aren't any good some are and some aren't some are diseased and some are deformed and some are just growing too slowly look you're on the post see these rings in the wood those are what we call growth rings each representing a period of annual growth notice how the outer rings are closer together this tells us that this tree has slowed in growth and is ready for cutting then you mean if we remove trees such as this the others will grow faster that's right these trees will never be good for timber but they can be used now for pulpwood so you see mr rogers with proper management we can enjoy the value of your timber today and improve the value of it for tomorrow that may give us better trees but what about those that have been cut shouldn't they be replaced yes but not in the same area over here is an area of hardwoods where something can and should be done a lot of these trees are forked and twisted all are the same age and simply will never get much larger yet some of these trees can be harvested and sold and that's where i plant our new trees right again only it's not quite that simple before we can plant the pine seedlings we have to clear the land that sounds like it'll cost me a fortune no not at all the cost is easily justified that's why we recommend prescribed burning under carefully controlled conditions of course the first thing we'll do is bring in a drum chop [Applause] [Music] this will chop up all remaining material and leave it on the ground where it will burn completely [Music] then we'll plow a fire line around the area to be burned we also take advantage of natural fire breaks such as roads and streams but we won't burn until the weather is just right and we have all the men and equipment in position richmond too we're getting ready to start to prescribe burn on the raw's track route 619. grid is 1196 three two will be starting at nine o'clock and be finished around one over we usually burn in the summer so where do i get our new forest it's already growing in the state nursery the seedlings are growing in beds until they're one year old they're lifted by a special harvester that cuts them from the ground without damaging the roots the seedlings are then graded and bundled for shipment how do we ship the whole forest that's no problem at this point a stake body truck will haul a half a million trees that's a lot of forest we need a lot of forest and as soon as possible yeah but a half a million trees is a lot of planning we'll help you there too we'll own your planting bars for use in areas where you have to hand plane and we've got machines that can plane 8 000 trees a day [Applause] and all those machines need is a place to plant a place where those trees can spend the next 50 years just growing well they say that only god can make a tree but that don't mean that he wouldn't appreciate a little help from us and if we give them the help they need one day them trees will look just like this plenty of wood for houses and paper and all the things we need and some of the other things we need will grow right along with them you even leave a few of the not so good trees for folks who need them trees hold the soil in place and make shade so there's plenty of clean cool water for drinking and swimming that's mighty nice whether you have webbed feet or two of the regular kind [Applause] all in all putting away the rough trees to make room for the good ones is pretty important to just about everybody even if you're not the best whittler or the best fisherman but sometimes i surprise folks both on the end of my line and on the end of my knife so there was i was like wondering i was like you and only you and like the only you was a smokey the bear uh us forestry service thing so that's what i was wondering was that hmm all right uh let's uh watch a tow boat on the river enjoy hmm [Music] the rear part of the toe is pulled out of the way by the tow boat and the gates close [Music] the first part of the toll may be pulled through the lock by barge pullers on the lock wall then the tow boat pushes the second half through and the tow is once more joined together as the trip continues continues for what may be a journey all the way down the continent for america's great river system joins pittsburgh cincinnati louisville chicago minneapolis st louis memphis new orleans and via the intracoastal waterway joins all these and other cities with houston [Music] the come ahead bell tells the crew that a meal is ready from a spotless kitchen with the latest equipment you'll find all sorts of good things to eat [Music] there's ham deep fried potatoes cake and all that goes to make a fine dinner [Music] officers and crew eat the same food in the same dining room men work for six hours then get six hours off watch they relax in lounge rooms with games like solitaire or with checkers always a favorite among river men for the off watch the river night brings rest radio music and a chance to settle down with a magazine [Music] for men on duty the night requires alertness and skill blinking lights on shore are guide posts [Music] [Music] the searchlight has trouble penetrating fog the enemy of men on the river as it is of men who sail the sea but today radar helps by showing the way and any obstacles that may be in that way radar a product of world war ii an invention that mark twain never knew keeps the tow boat moving ahead [Music] a few passenger boats remain on the rivers but most traffic now is freight each cargo requires special handling scrap iron is unloaded by a giant magnet [Music] new automobiles 600 at a time move down the river to the south [Music] sometimes a cargo like soap or detergent must not get wet [Music] it's carried from a closed freight car by truck down an elevator and into a closed river barge where it is kept dry [Applause] [Music] sometimes the cargo is coal a heavy product that like many items may be shipped economically by the river [Music] or it may be gasoline from louisiana and especially constructed barges [Music] or pipe for oil fields or refineries carried in the open hopper barges that are the most commonly used barges on the river today or drain from minnesota for america's great farming area is served by this river system whatever the cargo tow boats like this one of the union barge line and all kinds of barges keep it moving through sun or fog day or night today thanks to the army corps of engineers who keep the rivers open and thanks to the thousands of officers and river man aboard the toes america's great heart of the nation river system is better than ever and busier than mark twain ever imagined it could be [Music] the golden age on the river was not mark twain's time it's today [Music] oh crap i'm sorry i wonder what happened oh sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry i hope that that had not gone down long um yeah oops um yeah i was i was in the back looking for a football film for karen's birthday tomorrow it's not going to be related to the super bowl it might not even be professional football it might not even be american football we'll just see tomorrow any in the meantime here's uh more footage from that north carolina craft festival oh that's very so now i need another stitch how many stitches does that require a certain number any numbers you might want to use what would be a good you might think of repeating something that you already have you're running stitch you might want to use more than you have and you might want to double it or one of the diagonal running stitches like the yellow there near the bottom on the orange you see where the yellow and the black comes together yes which is it's a running stitch it's just the point of origin where it begins and where it ends that changes it but it's only the running stitch do you make that up as you go along or does it do you have a pattern no i'm just making it this is a needle weaving which the only difference from any other type of weaving is actually in the tools you use and the fact that it's shaped during the past few years there's been more and more attention on weaving variations or weaving that you can do that don't that doesn't require a loom or expensive equipment and uh sometimes it's known as shaped weaving sometimes as needle weaving it's a piece of poster board it can be any shape this is also a needle weaving here you see using different colors with a fan shape the idea is that both of these could be taken off and could be appliqued to a piece of fabric and worked into a stitchery panel since our main concern is a creative approach to stitching now when you say a creative approach what are you what are you talking about what do you really mean i mean that there is more concern for originality in traditional stitchery which we might call embroidery cruel work relates to this any of the needle craft forms which depend more on preset ideas and following the rules that are established so to speak to get an end result it's predetermined to a great degree but in creative stitchery a characteristic is that more emphasis is being placed on color or emphasis on texture combining different materials different approaches to the form that you actually get for example the needle weaving is is just one of many approaches it might be that applique would be used fabric would be cut and stitched to another piece natural materials might be worked into the surface of the stitchery beads feathers so uh i think a characteristic of creative stitchery is that the person doing it is responding to the piece in an ongoing way as he works rather than deciding ahead of time this is what it will be and i'm going to follow these rules verbatim to make it this way so you really let yourself go yes and it's probably much better for you i think it is certainly i enjoy it more right well you say you use all the different types of materials with this how do you go about is it the personal matter of deciding color or where do you get ideas for color and blending colors yes it is a personal matter but uh one thing that has come out in our class today is the many resources that we have for color ideas of course we have photographs that can be used here is one example right here uh something that came from a little art book and it's actually a print much like a painting but this can serve as a color idea for a stitchery and it did so in terms of this thread right here these threads consisting of cotton wool rayon a variety of textures a variety of sizes the inspiration for this color combination was actually this picture we have another example here where a drapery fabric yellow orange rust color brownish black and this resulted in this color combination so it may be from fabrics that we already have on hand it may be from photographs it may be from colors that we see in nature flowers or birds you know what i was just thinking about the different shades of greens in the trees yes in the springtime right that could be a one and maybe then you'd see a dogwood along with it or something that'd give you a whole color scheme wouldn't it it would and nature is the best with respect to color idea and color inspiration it's all there if we just learn to see it do you have trouble getting your students to uh to take this approach because traditionally they have not it takes a it's a change it takes a little while to adjust to this and i forget that it does take the time but you know as i go into a class i'm reminded suddenly i need to back up and slow down just a little and work with them a little more and moving in this direction probably this approach if if you were teaching youngsters you were never in trouble no my experience tells me that that's right you have no trouble with the youngsters and the younger the better because they haven't been fresh they haven't been bound to uh to the old ways well let's say let's look at some of the work that is being done by this group of students here montreat now here's uh i asked a question yeah sure you may ask a question to take that off i think but i'm not sure and i don't know what's going to happen all you need to do at this point is unbutton it so to speak or just slip your warp loops off the end and if it appears that you have space to add other filler material across you could go ahead and do that that's what i wonder about that's going to make loops you'll have a little space you can either loop through or stitch down or you can weave back in with a little more material just take a moment the same way same material she's letting herself go yes and that's what you want right that was new for her okay well let's move down this way and see what someone else is doing they look like tadpoles tadpoles that's what i turn them around and so our camera might see what looks like tadpoles which are the tadpoles well she is using various materials all right didn't she turn it a little more up to the right there you go yes that's the way it's supposed to go oh no you're going to have they do look like that they do they do look like tadpoles this is what i was yes i did after the first one your inspiration was from a picture a picture from a picture uh-huh this picture yes and you are rattling out some material here to get your thread to get the color that i want yes well for goodness sakes this piece too this piece and the cross platform is very good because there is another very interesting let's move along and you were the one that was yelling for help a while ago yes and did you get it have you got your stitch that you want let's pick that up and let us kind of see it a little bit is this your first effort at this type of yesterday well you're doing real well doing beautiful beautiful and here you'll have to tell me now what you would do a mushroom oh it's a part of a mushroom here we go let's hold it around that's the cast that's the cap and what kind of stitch is that that's a buttonhole stitch blanket stitch blanket stitch and what's all this you've got on this thing well that's a mess that's a mess now that's that's why you let yourself go well i was trying to learn some new stitches on that one well that's exactly what you had i had to fill in spaces when looked unbalanced i don't call that a mess if i call it good if i'd been the one doing it could we cut because i can't get recently at montreat north carolina we ran across the most unusual creative stitchery class the most unusual part was it was being taught by a gentleman jim gentry of ashford recently at montreat north carolina we happen to run across a very unusual creative stitchery class one of the unusual factors was that it was being taught by a gentleman named jim gentry from ashford so that was raw footage that was shot of [Music] a little workshop and uh so the sound was really crisp and the reason why is that it was a mag sound so it was a magnetic strip that's on the film and they had a good mic that was the other thing that made it good so you have more fidelity with a magnetic strip than you would with optical sound because optical sound um you're limited uh by your range of dynamic range so that's why that was a good good shape and i guess that was uh she recorded the intro to it and then it was all the raw footage of it so uh and those accents man we got some good uh appalachian accents um including the virginia accents pretty good so thanks for tuning in today um we'll be back again tomorrow and we will watch at least one film about football but it won't have anything to do with the super bowl because i don't really have any films about that so everybody have a good rest your
