um so do do is the fact that i got the date wrong and then i showed a film about coffee production a cry for caffeine um something that you can gift us with at the um uh website ko-fi.com av geeks maybe so maybe that's what that is let me turn down this volume um so uh that was from the oregon archive and ultimately from the um mogul brothers collection so a lot of films in that library that you could rent that had educational value so there was definitely some interesting uh footage of south america um some of the the uh intertidals kind of make stuff up you know or do whatever they can to fit some sort of narrative so you gotta take it sometimes with a grain of salt um another person that was kind of responsible for stuff like this was eugene castle who made films and distributed them to home markets and this is a day at the zoo man is always interested in the rest of the animal kingdom many of the denizens of fireplaces seem almost human and from them we can learn a lot various kinds of monkeys live happily as one big family in one big cage it's the fun spot of the zoo the alert kenai marmoset has come all the way from brazil the monkeys seem as interested in us as we are in them [Music] wakari of south america is certainly wondering what it's all about in the monkey park there's lots of fun some new arrivals are being released to become permanent guests they seem a little uncertain about their new home but it's better than the little box and they take a chance so now for a swim across the island [Music] all the conveniences of a popular beach resort in monkey land too there are bullies who boss the smaller ones chico is a great favorite with the children he takes a long walk with him every day [Music] and then the luxury of a rub down for one must be fit the trainer does all the work while the big fella just watches his friends pass by the pool in crocodile park looks like florida these big fellas are equally at home on shore or in the water always dangerous they're mighty jaws with sharp teeth and snaps shut with lightning speed they're one of the terrors of tropical streams the great lizards were on earth ages before man centuries ago they battled with other prehistoric monsters and one to survive down through the ages today they live on remote islands in tropical seas the hermit crabs are interesting little fellas they take possession of the abandoned shells of other small sea animals and carry them as they move about [Music] penguins with their human accents are always fascinating they give us friendly greetings this family from africa looks like men in masquerade but they seem to take life very seriously the sparkling pool calls an awesome they've just gone the last one in is it they're just a lot of show-offs and soon they come back for applause and to strut in their swallow tail coats this flock of rosy pelicans comes to us from africa graceful birds in spite of their huge bills their feathers have a faint rosy pink blush they're slightly larger than the american white pelican beautiful birds tame and friendly [Music] the little pocket gopher is a burrowing rodent from the western states industrious but destructive an enemy to farmers interesting to watch but bad for growing crops the african porcupines are strange-looking creatures like their american brothers they rely on their sharp quills for defense smart dogs keep their distance the others get quills in their noses otters beware for these quills are sharp the beardens always attract great crowds this sitka brown bear from alaska looks friendly as he begs for peanuts but he's really a dangerous beast an enemy of man [Music] the polar bear from zero climates is one of the most majestic species of the bear family in our temperatures he finds it hard to keep cool and he suffers from the heat so he stays pretty much in the cold water chilled by blocks of ice and does he love ice he greets it like a long lost friend and welcomes its soothing chill but he'd like to be back in the arctic with the icebergs again the lion house is always crowded for people are attracted by these majestic animals of the african jungle the king of beasts is a handsome and dignified fellow but it's just as well he's safely caged the stealthy jaguar of the southern states in south america is another fine example of the family of big cats larger than the leopard he's a clever hunter sphinx like now but he's dreaming of days when he leaped on helpless prey [Music] the wildcats are dangerous and treacherous never tamed never trusted mean and tricky there's a bounty on their heads in the far west even the young cubs are unfriendly and an enemy of man they don't like dogs either and they give the battle cry [Music] the worst of southern asia is a primitive form of primate the slowest moving animal known he always takes his time even when doing nothing his big sensitive eyes avoid the light of day for he sees best at night that's when he hunts and feeds [Music] mountain goats oh no barbary sheep that inhabit the arid country of the mountains of north africa graceful sure-footed animals living safely and peacefully in remote inaccessible places these young giraffes are from the plains of central africa with their long graceful necks they can feed on leaves and twigs that other animals cannot reach and when they get a chance they can certainly cover ground [Music] today babies are often born in captivity when young with their long legs and necks they're clumsy but they grow up fast and often attain a height of 18 feet little funny face but to mother he's a beautiful darling when he grows up he'll be as handsome as the rest hippos breed in captivity too and mother teaches her offspring all the tricks of life in a zoo like making faces at the audience and begging peanuts the hippopotamus comes from tropical africa where it lives in streams and feeds on vegetation it stays submerged much of the time occasionally coming up for air and it always has a big appetite that's just one reason why it wouldn't make a good household pet he seems contented his big face here he knows when feeding time comes around and he leaves the water to eat the black rhinoceros of africa a large powerful animal with strong horns which when backed up by a couple of tons of weight and plenty of speed are formidable weapons that even lions fear this big fellow is a vegetarian but as belligerent as any of the carnivorous beasts elephants are always popular with the children and a baby elephant has as big a following as a movie star but for a long time he has no use for anyone but mother and she gets little rest while bringing up her youngster in the way he should go in a well-regulated zoo someday he'll pay more attention to the peanuts of the visitors but today they're justin useless mother is all important and she knows it too the sumatran elephant has no family cares but finds plenty of time to leave in the big pool must have her bath every day but when back home it's her custom to be in the water more than other elephants and two when there's an audience she likes to show off a bit and although she can't high dive she can plunge and when she does flash how did you like the spray [Music] well who's this in a great page all by himself whoa he's the principal keeper of the zoo that is he keeps everyone worried but the bars are strong what's he saying goodbye come again oh no not if we see you first [Music] so um you know kind of like a theatrical short and uh castle eugene castle and castle films were sold in camera stores uh and they had catalogs and so if uh a enthusiast a film enthusiast who had a 16 millimeter projector or an eight millimeter projector they could purchase these extra uh things to show along with their home movies um and um so and some of the stuff they shot and some of the stuff they would license from other places so you would see kind of condensed versions of abbott and castello shorts and other things so all right let's uh let's learn about landsat there's been a lot of talk about a new satellite that's a telescope that's been launched and this was a telescope that was aimed at the earth that was launched in the 70s to kind of gather data about the earth and gave us a lot of information about what's going wrong on the planet very early on so here's the fractured look [Applause] we have ignition sequence styles [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] what to understand a part of something the closer look may be the better look but to understand the whole of something the better look may well be the look from farther away [Music] only when a spacecraft could carry a camera far enough out into space did we get our first view of the earth as a planet in 1972 a satellite was launched specifically to record images of large areas of the earth from an orbit 910 kilometers away landsat the earth resources satellite geologists welcome landsat's big views from space as a new way to study large areas of the earth's crust [Music] satellite images are providing complete detailed views of faults in the earth's crust these cracks in the surface may run for hundreds of kilometers but they're not easy to detect and trace landsat images 185 kilometers on each side offer geologists an exciting new view of these important earth fractures [Music] geologists study faults in the earth's crust such as this view of part of california's san andreas fault system for many reasons one important reason is earthquakes this diagram shows an earthquake prone fault in the earth's crust great pressures from deep inside the earth can begin to press on one side of the fault on the other side the earth begins to slip to move and then suddenly shifts [Music] [Music] [Music] there's an earthquake prone fault in the state of california a huge fracture more than a thousand kilometers long the san andreas fault system consisting of many smaller faults like this recent break hundreds of earthquakes have occurred along this fault and the smaller faults that branch off of it landsat images of the geological fault systems in california have given scientists a new and valuable perspective on this threat of earthquakes to the population of this region views like this combined with many other kinds of data will help scientists monitor the san andreas fault system [Music] knowing exactly where the faults lie should help to determine where not to build a town a nuclear power plant or recreational mountain resort landsat images can be used to revise and correct the geologic maps of all areas of the earth where earthquakes occur fractures in the earth's crust are related to more than hazards like volcanoes and earthquakes they're the pathways through which minerals travel upward from the depths of the earth minerals begin as solutions containing chemical elements far below the earth's surface high temperatures form bodies of magma or molten rock mineralizing liquids from these bodies of magma move through faults and fractures diagrammed here in yellow along the way the rising liquids interact with rocks in the crust and gradually for minerals iron gold lead copper silver all of the many ores which are precious hidden resources iron is often present when other minerals are formed and just as anything which contains iron will rust when left exposed to air and moisture rocks which contain iron show a color change when they're exposed on the earth's surface this discoloration was a clue to possible mineral deposits which early prospectors would search for [Music] early gold hunters would also look near streams probably without ever knowing that streams follow fractures and fractures are likely to have ore deposits nearby in their search these prospectors had a little knowledge hunches and prayers most found disappointment a few found gold [Music] so [Applause] [Music] so so [Music] [Applause] [Music] as the years have passed and the easy to find surface deposits of gold and other ores have been exhausted geologists have had to look harder and more scientifically for new deposits probing deep into earth fractures for the treasure [Music] modern technology can remove ores from deep in the earth and every known deposit is drilled exploded and dug to produce its maximum yield [Music] minerals are a non-renewable resource harder and harder to find at a time when the world's growing population demands more and more mineral resources for manufactured products and energy [Music] one of the challenges facing geologists today is to find scarce new mineral deposits the launching of landsat in 1972 began a new era for geologists involved in this urgent search this is a landsat map of the entire united states a mosaic of many overlapping landsat images pieced smoothly together this new total view reveals to the eye of a trained geologist the subtle indications of entire fault systems which were previously undetected for example many gold silver and copper mines in the state of nevada are found along a fracture called the midas trench the midas trench is shown here by arrows placed along the fracture on this landsat image since minerals most often develop along fault lines landscapes provides modern day prospectors with valuable clues as they explore new areas landsat imagery can provide another hint to people trying to decide where to begin prospecting operations when landsat images are processed on a computer areas with surface iron oxide discoloration can be clearly distinguished from surrounding areas by displaying them in a separate color for example green this surface discoloration can be a sign of mineralization this is a landsat image of a well-known mining area in nevada when the locations of known mines are placed over the landsat image they match the areas of the iron oxide discoloration in exploring new areas for minerals landsat maps which show fractures and discolorations are a useful first step in showing prospectors where to begin work with other exploration techniques landsat can't find the buried treasure but it can help point the way landsat's remote sensing view and its continuing repetitive coverage of the same area can also record changes in the earth's land masses at the bottom of this landsat mosaic of iceland is the small island of hamey an island with a volcano which had shown no activity for years in 1973 that changed the volcano suddenly erupted [Music] for six weeks the volcano roared raining fiery volcanic ash down on the town the air filled with poisonous gases belched out of the volcano the people were all evacuated and much of the town was destroyed as waves of red hot lava poured through the streets and on into the sea [Music] [Music] by the time the volcano was spent lava pouring into the sea and solidifying had added two and one half square kilometers to the size of the island a reminder that this entire island was once formed by volcanic lava bursting out from beneath the ocean floor the new two and one-half square kilometers of land were recorded clearly on this landsat image showing scientists how the satellite can be used to map land mass changes in the most remote areas of the earth landsat's remote sensing provides us a view from outer space which helps us to better understand our dynamic and ever-changing planet [Applause] [Music] so [Music] music was awesome um it was a great great thing so it looks like landsat was uh less about environmental impact of man and more about uh like how can we take advantage of uh satellite data for mining more resources from the earth um so that probably i think there it was a balance like there was some data that talked about wow look how polluted we are and look at all the problems that um oil has caused uh with oil spills and you know the mining strip mining and all that stuff but then also like look at all the potential oil that we found here um anyhow uh so behind me i got a telecini which is a machine that we use to transfer films uh that you can watch live so uh let's watch hidden treasure we're just talking about hidden treasure so here's hidden treasure enjoy [Music] [Music] professor victor why did you bring the math club up here because we're gonna look for hidden treasure really yes i brought three maps along and i'm going to give one to each of you what's the treasure professor vector you'll have to find that out for yourself but i can promise you it's something you'll be able to use for the rest of your life gee let's get started okay here are your maps i don't get it i don't either or me well just think it over and good luck that pond over there must be this pond on the map here right and here's the road and here's the fence what about this x here could that be where the treasure is no that's too simple what about all those numerals and arrows are they the same in all our maps no they're different then there must be three different treasures okay i've got it the noodles tell you how far to go and the owls tell you what direction to go see mine says two right plus four up plus one right plus must mean and then and mine says five right plus four up plus two left and mine says two down plus three right plus six up okay let's get started wait a minute how do we know where to start from where you end up depends on where you start from gee that's right where do we start from that must be what the x on the map is for it must be the starting point right this is the starting point i'll start pacing off wait a minute look what happens if i take two paces i see your paces are longer than his maybe the new rules don't mean steps at all maybe they mean inches or yards or miles hey i know what they mean see those friends posts all on the road they're equally spaced i'll bet the distance from one to the next is what the new moves are talking about when we need something to measure the distance between the posts here's a piece of old fence board let's see if it's the right length it's the right length let's start with the first map first we go two right and then four up and then one right where's detroit maybe we have to dig for it before we do that let's work out the other maps okay i'll mark the spot with a rock we start back at the x and go five right and then four up and then two left hey this is the same spot i'll be getting a small lat let's try the last one let's see first we go two down and then three right then six up here we are again well let's start digging that won't be necessary you've already dug the hidden treasure you've been learning how to find points on a graph this point where the dark lines meet is the starting point on your graph now on your map number one the instructions were two right and then four up and then one right bringing you to this point your map number two had different instructions but as you found it brought you to the same point and your map number three had another set of instructions but it also brought you to the same point as the first two so you see many different sets of instructions will get you to the same point now let's see if you really understand the instructions on each of your maps use three arrowed numerals can you think of two arrowed numerals that would have gotten you to the same point how about three to the right and four up the graph or four up the graph and three to the right great so you found a hidden treasure now you know how to locate points on a graph as a reward i'm going to give you one more map for all of you to work on and this time you'll find a different hidden treasure two to the right minus three to the left we know what two and three mean plus mint and then but what could minus mean we know what minus means with ordinary numerals like eight and four it means something plus four equals eight that would be four so two to the right minus three to the left equals what must mean that something plus three to the left is the same as two to the right we already know what plus means okay let's figure it out there's two to the right we have to do something and then three to the left and end up there at two to the right what about three let's see three to the right then three to the left let's just get this back to the start then we should have gone two more to the right try five to the right so 5 to the right and then 3 to the left is the same as 2 to the right so 5 to the right works then we start here and go five to the right here's another end of this rock congratulations now you know how to subtract with arrowed numerals what a treasure aren't you pleased i'll bet you never expected to find and then you should look behind you to make sure that no cars are coming then look to the left and always when it's a three-way intersection look straight ahead to the right to the left again and then anyone bring any popcorn [Music] driving any vehicle takes special skills and concentration let's put ourselves in the driver's seat you can pick whatever vehicle you want for your imaginary trip to see what a skillful driver does [Music] [Music] all vehicle drivers need good visual habits to drive skillfully this line is called the line of sight it's an imaginary straight line from your eyes to the object in the distance you're focusing on side vision or peripheral vision is everything you can see on either side of your line of sight without moving your head everything you can see at one time is called your field of view look what happens to your field of view when you turn your head every time you switch your line of sight your entire field of view changes you can see more of some things and less of others there is always a lot to look at when you're driving any vehicle but if you increase your speed there is too much to look at let's take this trip again this time more slowly now you can see everything clearly and you will have time to react if something gets in your way learning how to deal with an overloaded visual field is just one skill drivers use there are many more your main focus should be on your path of travel but look around too look back and forth and glance quickly to avoid staring at one object very long accidents often happen because bicycle riders forget to check behind them before turning or changing direction a rear view mirror helps to check for vehicles coming up behind you if you don't have one slow down before you turn signal that you are turning check behind to make sure no cars have missed your signal and are about to pass you check ahead in the intersection for traffic check to the left and to the right then put your hand back on the handlebar and check behind again to make sure it's clear before you turn [Music] hey hurry up we're late we're gonna cream those guys this time you bet i hope i get to play first base i just hope i get to play anywhere hey how do you say it's gonna pitch today i hope it's not mckelvey [Music] sure [Music] uh [Music] uh okay let's move back out of the street please intersections pose the most dangerous threat to all vehicle drivers bicycle riders should be especially alert when they come to an intersection [Music] look far ahead and aim high to pick out intersections coming up ahead of time and to look for other possible problems like park vehicles in your path [Music] parked vehicles can mean trouble another trouble spot for bike riders comes up when wide roadways suddenly get narrow [Music] if you are constantly checking far ahead you will be ready for these situations some dangers aren't as easy to see as others [Music] any large obstruction could be hiding a possible danger large trucks buildings trees bushes and especially walls can hide another vehicle from your view rain or other bad weather conditions can cut down a driver's ability to see you it also cuts down your ability to see other vehicles if you must ride in bad weather slow down and be extra careful search the ground for changing road surfaces your bicycle reacts differently to each one loose gravel is slippery bricks are bumpy adjust your speed to each surface to keep your bicycle under control look near to quickly determine direction changes of other vehicles it's easier to spot pedestrians especially short children by looking at the ground between parked cars and watching for their feet all the skills we have learned so far concern using your eyes but your ears can help too or speeding up or sliding out of control [Music] don't depend on your ears alone however always use a visual check to verify what you hear [Music] let's review the skills we've learned keep your main focus on your path of travel but look around too direct your vision search far ahead in order to pick out dangerous situations before you get there this will give you more time to react search the ground around you to determine road conditions look near for sudden direction changes of other vehicles use your ears for clues too whether you drive a fire engine a jeep a tank or a bike these skills and i'll have to fast forward to the end all right okay this film told us to learn to look and listen to be more skillful drivers we've been told to look and listen for safety ever since we were in element in almost all bicycle accidents and that's why we need to learn to look and listen so nothing will surprise us by being aware of dangerous situations and how to avoid them we're ready for any
