do so so so so so so so so so so so so so yeah so the downtown pittsburgh pennsylvania uh that film was called um it was written on the can college bowl and it was a bunch of just kind of raw 16 mm footage around carnegie mellon uh in in the library um and so i don't know was that shot for um an appearance on college bowl where you know i i did high q bowl which was high school and there was always like a little introducing the high school team and then it would show a little snippet of what you know was going on at the high school and so maybe this was you know carnegie mellon and college bowl and this is raw footage that they edited down i have no idea i mean there's no information and it seemed like we were bouncing around trying to figure out what year that was but um yeah it was long but it was kind of interesting it's kind of fascinating uh this is you guys were along for the archaeological dig to try to figure out like what is this artifact when was it made why was it made uh and that's what we do here at av geeks uh during lunch is watch old 16 millimeter films and try to figure it out uh and i'm skip alzheimer and i'm actually back in the archive today uh happy to have the old neon up and running um and i tested negative for kovid which is why i'm back i didn't want to get any of my co-workers sick before the holidays um and that might just be the general rule of thumb going forward is you know during cold and flu season if i feel like i have a flu i'm not gonna you know i'm gonna wear a mask i'm not gonna affect anybody because that getting the flu sucks getting covered kind of sucks anyways um the next one we got set up is a sound film that previous one was shot without sound uh mos is often what it's referred to mid-out sound um kind of german supposedly anyways what is sound anyways let's find out [Music] that sounds like a fourth of july celebration but it isn't really it's just tom on his way to school [Music] wouldn't tom be surprised if somehow we could turn off the sound when he strikes that can and that box of course we're just pretending we can't really turn off the sound we all know that if you strike an object it usually makes a noise [Music] but do you know why do you know what causes sound why are some sounds different from others here are several experiments you can perform to answer these questions and to learn more about sound a yardstick lying on the table does not make any noise but if we snap it so that it moves up and down rapidly it makes a clattering noise when it stops moving the sound stops also a rubber band doesn't make any sound either but if you pluck it so that it moves back and forth quickly [Music] it does make a sound the sound dies away as the rubber band stops moving we are beginning to learn that an object makes a sound only when it is moving in fact all sound is caused by movement if nothing on the earth ever moved there would be no sounds when water moves you hear a splashing sound when the leaves of a tree move back and forth you hear a rustling sound [Applause] when a door slams shut the wood of the door is moving back and forth quickly any rapid back and forth movement is called vibration we made the yardstick vibrate we made the rubber band vibrate [Music] and we can even make the air in an empty test tube vibrate when we blow across the top of the tube the air inside moves up and down quickly and this makes a whistling sound most of the objects that make sounds vibrate so rapidly that you cannot actually see them move for example it's almost impossible to see this bell vibrate although you can hear the sound in order to prove that it does vibrate tie a small iron washer to a fine thread and hold it lightly against the bell if the belt isn't ringing nothing happens but when you ring the bell the washer bounces away because the vibration of the bell is pushing it now we know that sound is caused by vibration but in order to hear the sound these vibrations must reach our ears how does this happen for instance how does the sound of the electric bell travel to our ears when the bell rings it vibrates very rapidly and pushes against the air around it this rapid pushing makes sound waves in the air which travel away from the bell in all directions if the waves reach our ears we can hear the sound of course you cannot really see sound waves but they do travel something like this most of the sounds that reach our ears travel to them through the air can sound travel through other materials too suppose we put this toy frog underwater will the sound travel through the water to our ears listen closely let's try another experiment do you think that sound can travel through wood hold one end of a stick of wood against your ear while someone else scratches the other end of the stick can you hear the sound these experiments have shown that sounds can travel easily through water and through solid materials as well as through air are all sounds alike [Music] here is one way in which sounds are different we say that one sound had a higher pitch than the other sound this rubber band makes a higher pitched sound because it vibrates faster than the other rubber band the faster an object vibrates the higher the pitch [Music] do you know why these two rubber bands vibrate at different speeds the reason is that one rubber band is shorter than the other one and therefore vibrates faster the metal bars on this toy xylophone are different lengths the long bars vibrate slowly and make low pitched sounds while the short bars vibrate more rapidly and so make higher pitched sounds [Music] the shorter the object the faster it vibrates this test tube produces a low pitched sound when you blow gently over the top of it [Music] but if you pour some water into the tube it produces a higher pitch sound by adding water you reduce the amount of air in the tube a shorter column of air vibrates faster and therefore makes a higher pitch sound now see what you can do with a row of test tubes filled with different amounts of water [Music] you have learned a few important facts about sound that sound is caused by vibrating objects that sound waves travel through air water and solid materials that the faster an object vibrates the higher the pitch of the sound [Music] and in order to learn more about sound see if you can find the answers to these questions how does a piano make sounds why are some sounds louder than others what makes a cuckoo clock cuckoo [Music] oh that was so great especially the kid at the beginning bam bam um that's definitely what would happen outside of my um house if we had sidewalks kids walking to school just beating on stuff and of course if i was a kid walking to school i would have a stick beating stuff um so great all right so one of the advantages of being in the archive is that i have the telecini behind me um and this allows me to transfer films in real time out into the universe via the internet so we have a film set up this one actually has water damage which uh basically what has happened is water got into the film can and this could have been something that um hurricane fran this was a long time ago um basically i was at another space that i was renting with a bunch of guys power went out and the sump pump that pump water out of the basement failed and so the next morning there was eight inches of water in the basement and so some of it slowly seeped into um the film cans and so what you had is it kind of would fill up and it would stick together so you would see films you'll see this periodic uh damage so um here is banana fever with some weird water damage enjoy [Music] [Music] once upon a time in one of the great countries that sprawled across the equator called max max had up with bananas and every morning with great light he would eat all the ripe juicy food he had picked the night before and after totally content max would scamper off his friends one morning max found his friends in a state of great the vine was moving i've never seen anything like it they just picked themselves and floated off can you imagine i can vouch for them both too i couldn't believe surprise hey you i've been dreaming [Music] and the same day he found a bunch of vegetables hype and lovely that he never gave the slightest friends had told him that morning the next morning he just walked up earlier than usual and slipped down the tree that had bananas but instead of a bun montanas were spread out in a line and some of them were fine this has never happened i'll bet my pals think they're pretty they must have taken those bananas somehow breakfast just wasn't the same max was so annoyed by his friend's cruel joke his friends i did go and straighten things out denied taking any of the bananas which had been angrier and he went off muttering that his anger cooled somewhat when he found fifth most perfect bananas [Music] 15 lovely [Music] but the next morning it had happened again this time the bananas were spread out into 5 or 10 bananas in almost max had 15 bananas someone had taken five of them but this made him purple with rage when he found his friends he was too angry to speak with great effort they convinced max that none of them had taken his bananas that as max headed for home with a new bunch of twelve partners we saw it again so why just find with no one on it it's very scary max wasn't entirely convinced but he decided to stay awake and guard over his banana he waited and waited then when night was at its darkest started to move by themselves they moved into three rows of four bananas each and then they moved again into two rows of six bananas max stood aghast as one of two bananas rose up into the air and fought away stop come back with my bananas the next morning a humble max told his friends what happened whatever it is visible but it must be stopped nonetheless i'll thank god with you tonight max we'll try to catch the thief this afternoon they picked nine delicious bananas that night after having to place the bananas on the ground near his tree matt pretended to sleep and the giraffe did her best to hide in some bushes nearby shortly after midnight the bananas began to move they moved into three rows of three bananas each then one whole row rose up floated away grab it this time let's use a trap so max and his friend spent the day digging a deep hole and covering it with large leaves then max carefully placed nine bananas on the leaves for by this time his passion for bananas had turned into grim determination to catch the banana thief that night max and the giraffe waited once more but they were so tired from building the trap that they soon dozed off whatever it was the invisible thief was trapped so max told the giraffe to stick his head into the hole and feel around help it's got me hey [Music] the invisible thief had gotten away with three of max's nine bananas again the following day the alligator called them all together i have a feeling that we're not going to capture this invisible thief but we can prevent him from stealing as many bananas as he has been but how most thieves do things in a certain way let's review the thefts and see if there's a pattern to them let's see the night i brought home 15 bananas he took five of them and then the next time i brought home 12 bananas he took six of them and both times that i had nine bananas he took three of them what well 5 divides 15 evenly 6 divides 12 evenly and 3 divides 9 evenly what do you mean divides evenly alligator explained that if you have 15 bananas you can split them into groups of five and you'll have none left over and if you have 12 bananas you can split them into groups of six and have none left over and continue the alligator if you have nine bananas you can split them into groups of three and have none left over i think i figured out his pattern when i had 12 bananas he first put them into groups of four but then changed them into groups of six four divides twelve evenly and six also divides 12 evenly so he took 6 which is the larger the visor that's his pattern he always takes the larger divisor well how come he didn't take all 12 bananas 12 is the largest divisor of 12 because he never takes all the bananas that's part of his pattern isn't there a number of bananas i could gather where he'd take nothing i'm not sure well if he takes only three bananas when i have nine what about ten but they found that five divides ten evenly so ten wasn't a good number since a thief would take five then they tried eleven bananas eleven could not be divided into groups of two evenly and it can't be divided into groups of three evenly no groups of four nor five nor six nor seven nor eight nor nine nor ten only eleven word so max went out and collected 11 bananas and that night he waited and watched and sure enough the bananas began to move first they moved into a shape like this and then a shape like this and finally they moved into a shape like this max held his breath he was sure the thief was going to take them all but just as the alligator had predicted the thief didn't take all the bananas and one is the only other divisor that can be divided into eleven with no remainder he had stuck to his pattern oh well i guess i can afford to lose one banana from the bunch several weeks later max's cousin alvin came to visit after a delicious dinner alvin laid back and groaned with satisfaction that's the first full meal i've had in weeks and why is that because someone has been taking most of my coconuts i guess one banana wasn't enough for him have another banana and i'll tell you all about it [Music] [Music] do [Music] so um the narrator sounded familiar with that and i was like that's that's weird number narrator uh which is one of my uh a uh one of my favorite films about fractions uh and it's the same type of format in that it's animated there's this mystery and something's missing and you know so this is very similar and sure enough it was the same company davidson films that made this um and so that weird the periodic that was about 24 frames behind when you saw a bunch of deterioration that was uh the soundtrack being um damaged where the emulsion is basically just kind of because there's water so that's water damaged stuff and as you notice the further you got towards the hub the less the water line was like maybe here and so it only affected along up to the where the water line seeped into the can the rest of it was fine um so i lost quite a few films a couple hundred films do that but actually some of that material was used in a uh experimental film called acacia by bill morrison um so i actually went through it and he paid me for the footage and i didn't feel so bad about it because it was being used again uh this is a fascinating film it's um it's kind of during that time where there were these these films with music that were showing different types of um sports like one on surfing on um hang gliding and there's no narration but this one has a narrative to it um this is skater dater enjoy [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] so [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] oh [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so yeah little story framed around skateboarding um and i get it about the uh uh barefoot skateboarding i don't i don't understand it although i would say that i probably did that i've never had a skateboard but my neighbors did and it was one of those metal wheeled ones it wasn't the rubber trucks or the rubber wheeled ones and i remember riding one barefoot because that's what you did in the summer when you're a kid is you were barefoot until you stepped on some uh glass or rusted nail and then you had to wear shoes because you had a bandage on um speaking of walking uh and being in the street this is a sid davis film about the dangers of doing all those things it's called dead right [Music] don't be dead right roger cheney may have been right in this case that's for the jury to decide but the most important fact is that he was struck by a car and nearly killed pedestrians like motor vehicles and bicycles also have their rights in traffic these rights are prescribed by state and local laws which recognize that pedestrians need protection in the flow of traffic on today's busy streets [Music] but these rights carry with them some basic responsibilities as well too many adults seem to think that pedestrian safety rules apply only to children for instance most adults know they should wait for a new green light before starting across the street but we often disregard the safety rule because we're in a hurry we cross after the light's been green for some time only to find ourselves caught in the middle of the street we've not only ignored a safety rule we've also been discourteous to the drivers we held up so if the signal is an old green when you get to the corner wait till the lights change again and walk on a new green light the same rule applies to pedestrian signals most of us know that but how often have we started across on a flashing wait or don't walk then we found ourselves having to dodge traffic in the middle of the street a flashing don't walk signal tells pedestrians that there isn't time to cross even though the traffic light's still green generally the pedestrian is entitled by law to continue to the other side but only a fool would endanger his life by insisting on his rights regardless of other factors in some areas a flashing walk signal allows pedestrians to cross but warns them to watch for turning cars [Music] pedestrians usually have the right of way when crossing in crosswalks too often however we grow careless and overconfident when we assume the law protects us we feel safe knowing that drivers are required to yield to us we may not even bother to look for cars then suddenly a motorist violates our right of way roger chaney was hurt in a situation like this with more and more states adopting the law that allows motorists to turn right on a red light pedestrians must keep fully alert when crossing at an intersection always stand on the curb not in the street while you're waiting in any situation even though you may legally have the right of way the safest practice is always to use good judgment look in all directions to make sure there's no immediate danger from traffic [Music] keep to the right in the crosswalk to give room to pedestrians coming from the other direction when one vehicle stops for a pedestrian in a crosswalk most people assume that vehicles in other lanes will stop too but we should always stop and look for other vehicles before we step out past the stopped car [Music] otherwise we may be dead right all drivers have blind spots places where part of their vehicle blocks part of their view a pedestrian may be completely hidden from a driver until it's too late to stop only when you can see the driver's eyes do you know that he can see you it's foolish to step off the curb into the path of an oncoming car when the driver doesn't have time to stop [Music] in this situation the driver has the right of way and pedestrians are required to yield pedestrians must always yield to vehicles when crossing where there's no intersection or marked crosswalk a jaywalker can easily be dead but never right in rural areas on roads where there aren't any sidewalks always walk on the left side facing oncoming traffic stay as far off the roadway as possible walking at night can be especially dangerous because everyone's vision is greatly reduced pedestrians should make themselves as visible as possible like colored clothing helps better still carry a flashlight and wear reflective clothing tape or tags pedestrian overpasses make it easier and safer to cross a busy and dangerous street we should always use them for our own safety as well as to set a good example for younger pedestrians [Music] at some intersections pedestrians can call for a walk signal by pressing the push button push it once and wait for the signal to change [Music] even with all these pedestrian safety devices we should never let down our guard sometimes we may get so preoccupied with other things that we completely forget our surroundings and that's dangerous [Music] in bad weather walking is considerably more hazardous and it's harder for drivers to see pedestrian even if we've forgotten our umbrellas we shouldn't forget our safety rule [Music] we play the equivalent of russian roulette every time we step out from between two parked cars the pedestrian is often in front of the oncoming car before the driver has time to react to the danger anyone who tries this type of crossing can quickly become dead wrong [Music] when we park our car and change from the role of driver to that of pedestrian we sometimes play another version of the same dangerous game without thinking or looking we push open the car door and step out into the traffic lane [Music] one moment with a driver cursing the thoughtless pedestrian the next where the pedestrian cursing the careless driver [Music] we all know that drunk drivers are dangerous and a pedestrian who's been drinking is dangerous in exactly the same ways his ability to judge the speed and distance of approaching cars is impaired he's less safety conscious and he often takes dangerous chances his reactions are slower he has more self-assurance and less self-control [Music] pedestrian accidents have many causes sometimes they happen because we insist upon our rights or what we think are our rights that was the case with roger cheney he was right but he almost died because he foolishly insisted on keeping that right rather than tempering it with courtesy and good judgment two lives have been needlessly damaged the driver will always carry the burden of the pain and suffering he caused roger chaney will spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair [Music] remember them the next time you have a choice be courteous and sensible don't be dead right [Music] i can check that gear in a minute so don't touch anything okay [Music] hey get down from there now [Music] hey turn it over what if it bumped that control by accident you'd be mincemeat by now what have i told you you don't work on equipment when the engine's running well i told them not to touch anything all right i guess i wasn't thinking you weren't thinking you mean you'll work on engines and machinery and not think of your own personal safety here shake hands with danger shake hands with danger meet a man you ought to know i used to laugh at safety now they call me three finger joe [Music] i was young and feisty never did things by the book just let me get my tool box and i'll take myself i climbed up on a dozier with my mechanics pride said if you can keep it running friend while i poke around inside shake hands with danger meet a guy i used to laugh at safety now they call me three finger joe although i learned a lesson i forgot it soon enough the knicks and burns and scratches showed the young ones i was tough till another morning i was grinding on some steel my other hand got careless and fed my skin into the wheel shake hands with danger step right up and say hello grinding wheels and metal are what made me three fingers [Music] i've seen mechanics burning i've seen them take a fall just to save themselves a minute i've seen them lose it all i've watched them caught in trouble seeing them take a chance and lose they get careless for a moment and spend a lucky to be just three finger joes [Laughter] all right some little cautionary tales to throw at you at the last minute um so i i saw that some of you won't be here tomorrow tomorrow i'm gonna try to do a special show i'm not sure if it's gonna work but we're gonna give it a shot how about that um but some of you will probably be traveling so please be safe um traffic during this time of year is always uh rough a lot of patience uh has been spent uh also you know keep safe with the covid and the flu don't get it don't spread it um because even if you're vaccinated it's still a pain but
