hello everybody i'm skip alzheimer and welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films from our collection and from other people's collections um that last film armies of health and disease that actually came from the oregon archive collection that we had scanned and ultimately that was part of the mogul brothers film library that you could rent that was based in new york city um and yeah uh kind of timely um talking about vaccinations and about public health and all that stuff um really pretty great uh speaking of anthrax yeah when i got back from new york i found this uh this letter from ireland and um it was filled i opened it up and it was filled with uh racing post forms and [Music] uh like ireland irish racing forms and um and i was like what is what is going on and there is like bid sheets or bet sheets um i was like what i don't understand and then there was this envelope that said happy punting and then in it was that you'll like what's inside and it was uh 60 and i was like what what is going on and then my wife and i were both like uh i mean is this is there anthrax at this like what is this came from ireland somebody spent uh two pounds or um yeah two pounds sending it to us and and i kind of kept going through it again and i'm like i don't understand like is this what is this and then i found this note from lori martin who is one of us one of the youtube uh people says i include some greenbacks for coffee and race cards uh and bet slips maybe uh someone you know is interested in racing so that totally threw us for a loop and i very much appreciate it lori thank you for that like baffling um five minutes or so or like what i don't understand what's happening ah also thank you kevin for the coffee uh you can buy coffee at uh ko-fi.com av geeks or you can go to buy me a coffee dot com slash av geeks either one of those will get us coffee in a roundabout way electronically money will be sent to us where we will use that electronic transaction to purchase caffeine which we will um be in the form of coffee that we have to process we have to heat up we have to a drink eventually uh the caffeine will leach from our stomach into our bloodstream and yeah i wish i had a film about how caffeine works i should i should keep an eye out for that uh that'd be really great uh anyway so much talking and so little 16 millimeter have been shown so far so this next film is um part of a series a beloved series uh because just because of the song so this is is a career in management for you enjoy [Music] what you call the two and you have to earn your way what you're gonna do [Music] what will you do when you're finally [Music] what will you do in the world of work there are thousands of occupations [Applause] you might be interested in an important career area called management people in the management of a company run the business is that something you'd like to do you may have had some experience in management already [Music] in directing others you are using the skills of management the same skills exercised in business industry and in the armed forces by members of the management team from foreman right up to the president of the company you are getting others to get things done according to a plan this film will tell you a lot about management and leadership it will help you to decide whether a career in management is for you [Music] more than nine million managers run the country's business industry and government many operate their own businesses mostly smaller enterprises [Music] but the great majority are salaried managers rapidly growing in numbers who run all sorts of organizations everywhere from small firms [Music] the giant national and international corporations from government agencies and hospitals to all departments of the armed forces serving throughout the world to universities and associations larger organizations usually operate on three levels top management middle management and supervisory or first line management the department of defense operates on basically the same three levels the top management group will usually include at least a board of directors board chairman president and a number of vice presidents who have charge of one or more company departments top management sets company policy and makes major decisions such as the products the company will make the location of new plants the financing of a new project usually the president is the chief executive officer and has final responsibility for the profitable operation and growth of the company a president's counterpart in local government could be a city manager or a hospital administrator in the health services or a college president or superintendent of schools in education the president's counterpart in the armed forces could be the commanding officer of a military facility air base or naval ship each is accountable to some kind of board and has a number of assistance the equivalent of vice presidents then there are the middle level managers they have the top posts in various company departments they can be a commissioned officer serving at the pentagon supervisors make up the largest management group generally they're called foremen in manufacturing they may be straw bosses or overseers in construction those inmates aboard ship included in this group are head tellers in banks head book keepers district sales managers elementary school principals department managers in retail stores they directly supervise the workers and usually plan and schedule their work and see that new employees are properly trained managers must be able to analyze problems make decisions and to communicate either orally or in writing managers must have these basic skills to perform their duties which are essentially the same at all levels of management managers plan forecasting what lies ahead fixing objectives setting up programs and procedures managers organize work among groups defining lines of communications [Music] they staff operations choosing competent people they direct delegating authority motivating their people coordinating their efforts [Music] and managers control setting up a report system telling them what is happening and sounding a warning if anything goes wrong managers are always responsible for the quality of the work one-third of all salaried managers work in retail and wholesale trades and substantial numbers in manufacturing finance insurance and real estate service transportation government and the armed forces women now moving into management in growing numbers make up 15 of the salaried managers how do you get into management some employees rise from the ranks usually they must have additional training or their opportunities will be limited many enter management from within an organization after a period of progressively more responsible experience in jobs such as salesman and accountant most foremen are promoted from the ranks that's because employers generally want foremen with skill and experience rather than specific education most of them however are high school graduates increasingly those hired to be trained for management jobs must have a college degree many employers look for applicants who have a degree in business administration others employ persons with college training and engineering science or mathematics to deal with complex industrial processes a management trainee may be assigned to a system manager or be placed in different jobs for short periods to learn the business the smaller owner manager businesses shouldn't be overlooked one may find educational requirements lower and his chance is good for getting in learning the business and management skills and helping to run it in time [Music] helping themselves to move up the ladder managers generally continue to improve their knowledge and skills [Music] reading widely going to lectures taking part in workshops training schools and training programs management experience gained in one company can usually be applied in many other organizations thus a manager may switch to a better job with another company with relative ease [Music] foreman with outstanding ability particularly those with education beyond high school may advance to jobs such as general foreman and department head [Music] some construction industry foreman go into business for themselves big corporations pay their top managers handsomely six-figure salaries are not uncommon management officials also get other compensation bonuses options to buy stock in the company at what may be bargain prices participation in profit sharing plans many companies give them liberal life insurance health benefits club memberships and other special privileges salaries of middle level managers are usually very good and vary with the size of the company nature of the industry and the scope of the job [Music] starting salaries for supervisors and trainees with college degrees are attractive many companies set foreman's salaries at from 10 to 40 percent above the base wages of the highest paid workers they supervise for specific information on salaries paid managers in your area see the people at the local office of your state employment service the american poet robert frost once wrote that by working faithfully eight hours a day you eventually get to be a boss and work 12 hours a day managers in the more responsible jobs generally carry heavy workloads and may work long hours in the office and home very long hours sometimes [Music] assignments carried out on their own time may involve travel speaking engagements and other activities entry-level managers however usually work the company's standard work week from 35 to 40 hours [Music] foremen generally work more than forty hours a week arriving before their workers and remaining after they leave many foremen are exposed to all kinds of weather or to dirt and noise in plants employment of salaried managers generally is likely to continue to increase rapidly in business industry and government growth and employment of foremen will be moderate more and more managers will be needed as organizations grow larger and larger managers who can cope with the ever-growing flood of information made available through worldwide electronics communications and data processing cope with it and make rapid and correct decisions based on it [Music] now a management job where you could call the shots may really excite you you may even welcome the hard work and responsibility that go with it but before you make a decision that management is for you you'll want to find out about the many other occupational areas in the world of work one or more may suit you better you want to see films on other career areas [Music] become expert on the world of work digging into occupational material on your own talk with your school counselor with your teachers whose subjects you like best with your parents [Music] state employment office [Music] and the recruiter at your local armed forces recruiting office [Music] then with the assistance of your school that best suits your needs plan with your counselor the education and training you will need get working on it keep working on it and probably at some place you've chosen at some planned time out there ahead of you you'll hit the target dead center [Music] and you have to earn your way [Music] what we do [Music] what will you really do such a hip song um so counselor films of course uh not only did this series of all these films uh is a career in for you ham smelling um but also they did the fun or dumb series so both series have awesome songs um so um somebody at counselor films said you know what we need a song for this and that's what they did this next film is is great it uh tries to encourage you to think about budgeting in your family enjoy [Music] [Applause] [Music] boy just what i want the money's at home could you put it away until tomorrow i'll be back to get it the name's connor ray connor oh it's divine will you hold it for me i'll have the money tomorrow oh polly connor still win nor well we'll fix the old buggy up uh i'll have to get the down payment from home set aside four of them for me will you tom connor so each of you had your eyes on that twenty dollars well it's too late now i've spent it all right tom start to carve that's part of our twenty dollars right there our new carving set we'll have this out after supper we need those new tires that gorgeous handbag and i need one we'll see after supper boy oh boy can't get anything you want around here we'll take this up in our family meeting well what a happy family but it's time we got something i wanted yes in the conners family as in many families discord and unhappiness are the results of improper management of money let's see if the family council after supper will get anywhere with this problem where are we ready gosh please one of the times but you know i have given this a lot of thought isn't it about time we worked out a better way of planning what we do with our money we plan all right we've got a budget a budget do we have one sure we know how much we spend for the house for food and the rest of the money just goes doesn't it it's always a race to see who can spend it first and that's the money we should plan for together to find out what we really need and who needs what the most and save up money for big items like the television set we all want why don't we discuss our budget right now fine this is the budget mother and i have been using we started out with our annual income of three thousand dollars that doesn't include my usual hundred dollar bonus that's income we can't count on then we divide our money into these major items first the essentials who takes thirty percent or nine hundred dollars housing the payments on our house and upkeep require twenty percent clothing for all of us fifteen percent operating expenses another fifteen percent family advancement and that's many things gets thirteen percent then we try to save seven percent if it works well that's the budget we've had i guess we need your help with it it checks pretty well with the percentages my business tax gives for our family of income i guess it's all right but dad where does my new driver come from why recreation money that's family advancement oh i see 3.90 a year that's over 30 a month isn't it well then i can get my driver right away hold on we've got to pay for medical bills and school books and church offerings and movies out of family advancement too that's why we need better planning how many times do we want to go to the movies this month when do we get the radio fixed should we try to have our entertainment at home how much for church offerings what about new screens for the porch and what about my handbag it seems we need more detail planning for our budget may help us to buy things when we need them well if the family can agree to plan perhaps the budget details can be worked out over a period of several family conferences the new budget grew out of cooperation trying to see the other fellows point of view and it was more detailed not just clothing but specific amounts for each member of the family that way they could see how their expenses compared with their plan not just general operating but specific costs based on the average figures for the last year and family advancement funds are planned and scheduled as well as possible you know i think i'll be able to get that driver in a couple of months or should i get a job after school so i can buy it sooner and practice indoors and i can't have the new handbag for the january party and i can pick up a couple of used tires and run the car in a then we can get a new santa well let's get this into operation shall we who do what i guess i'm in charge of income and i look after our checking account and large payments like uh like the house payments it's probably up to me to do most of the purchasing but ray and polly can help can't you you usually buy some things your own clothes yes and maybe we can help you keep the expense records sure we'll practice up on our personal expense budgets and then we can help out with the family records we'll need some place to keep bills and records and things how about the desk good that's our bookkeeping department from now on so the connor family budget was set in operation bills were kept in one place and paid regularly each month check stubs together with receipts for cash expenses provided the means of keeping thorough records and these records formed basis for frequent family conferences to check progress were they keeping close to the plan or did they need to change the plan and their budget plan reminded them to say no to less important things to save for things they really needed you don't know how much i like it see oh it is lovely dear very nice yeah i'm glad you've got it too you know i wish you'd get your golf club now say we've got money in our savings now plenty i could get that driver couldn't i savings money for golf clubs ray found out why not a few weeks later when an unexpected expense came up when the car was fixed wow what will that do to the budget and so the family council met again we'll still be short 56 on this repair bill we'll have to take the money from some other item but we can easily pay it back can't we the next few weeks of operating expense will make up the difference no it won't there's an insurance payment coming up and we have to order some coal it's running low so we'll have to cut into other funds well we have savings oh i don't mean to touch our savings bonds but we've built up a little emergency fund in our bank account of course we'll have to be sure to save up the money as soon as we can but there's a way to pay that repair bill isn't it and that's what the connors decided to do well some months later the connors have paid the repair bill and have saved the emergency money once more the planning of their family spending is shown in poli scrapbook our family budget has given us some of the things we want golf club handbag new tires and mother's favorite rose bush and some big things too some savings and leaves us a bonus check pretty soon now we can buy a new television set of course it does seem to me we should have got a refrigerator no it's a television set for us isn't it dad well i think you all agree that we ought to have a uh do you like this kind of garden furniture look i only make well perhaps the budget won't help the family to buy everything they want with their extra money but the budget is a reminder a reminder of their first agreement to plan their spending of the specific allotments and scheduling of their spending of the responsibilities for managing the budget and keeping records and a reminder of the flexibility and the handling of emergencies so the family can continue to benefit from their budget and enjoy the use of their money [Applause] [Music] so um i have no recollection of my family doing anything like this having a budget meeting after dinner um they pretty much did the budgeting my sister and i didn't even really have uh allowance i mean occasionally that would come up like i would say i want something or my sister would say i want something and i would say all right well let's do an allowance and so we would do chores and then at some point as soon as i got the money to get the thing i'd stop doing chores so it wasn't really i don't know it took me a while to figure out how to handle money but this is the type of thing that would have been shown in home economics course in uh either grade school or high school where it would talk about budgeting because a lot of times the housewife was expected to help maintain a home budget um that she of course would check in with her husband who was bringing in the money but she was maintaining the the expenses because she was paying the bills she was buying food and all these things are you know it's clear that you know when someone says well she's only a housewife it's like no no she was a very important part of the family unit and you know bought food maintained nutrition all that important stuff and uh so home eq would teach that and that's why i think comex should be required uh everybody should take it because they can learn how to cook food they can learn how to budget they can learn about all these different things related to just living and i wish that i had taken it in high school that and electronics okay um what do we got here uh this next film let's see yeah this is uh from the united states chamber of commerce which is not the same as your local chamber of commerce this is actually a big lobbying unit um that uh they're not always pro pro labor uh in fact they're very much against the 40 hour work week um and among other other things um so here's everyone everybody knows [Music] oh [Music] [Music] believe me thinking is the hardest work in the world it makes an eight-hour day seem like child's play i know what a man goes through as he begins to change his mind i know it doesn't just happen overnight no not in a week or a month or a year it takes a lot of months and a lot of questions before things begin to make sense [Music] i've been bowling with the boys every thursday for as long as i can remember a great bunch of guys each with a mind of his own on certain matters there's never any disagreement there's certain things everybody knows for sure just like everybody knows his own name now we were pretty sure of what we knew dead sure right up until the very moment we were hit by disaster [Music] that was over a year ago many of us are still trying to figure out how our company went broke thanks to the boom some of us found other jobs after a while but still the side of that empty plant stayed with us you couldn't just blink your eyes and make it disappear there it was a great big unanswered question something for a man to think about you talk to maybe a hundred people and five say something that sticks in your mind almost a year goes by and gradually bit by bit you find yourself thinking something quite different from what you thought when you first started all right hill morning jim well there's a list for today take it easy on me will you the price is the way they are i'm gonna have to have another wage increase yeah that seems to be the general attitude but attitude should change with the times bill there's certain attitudes about wages that belong to the past everybody knows a fatter pay envelope each year is good for business jim give a man more money you can buy more only each wage increase does cost somebody something money doesn't come out of thin air well we earn more fair and square sure you did but don't forget other people paid for it that's because we produce more as much as your wage increase that's the question which was settled in fair and open negotiation well i don't know anything about negotiations all i know is food all my life i've been peddling food and after all what's the difference between running a grocery or a factory they both have to show a profit come the end of the year or you've had it everybody knows that but does everybody act like they know it you guys act like profit is a dirty word year after year i hear you say we got to get more money and year after year prices go up enough then in walks you misses and complains about the price of this and the price of that what's one got to do with the other plenty when you guys ask for more money you get it every year regulars clockwork when i ask for more money that's something else huh yeah look take this package here the man who makes it he gets more money the people who make the box that it's packaged in they get more the guy who trucks it here gets more and i have to pay more for it year after year so so in walks your wife and wants to tear my head off when i charge another 10 cents a box a profiteer she calls me me a profiteer oh believe me brother that's rich i have never charged so much and made so little in all my life still you're getting another 10 cents a box yeah another 10 cents that walks right out of my cash register into the pockets of every man who had anything to do with making or delivering that package and they in turn have to spend that extra money in the higher prices they're paying so in the long run is anybody really better off [Music] it was a couple of weeks later that i met the former president of our local union now they don't come much brighter still even he had a hard time explaining why we lost our jobs look bill my job was to give you guys what you wanted well we never wanted that to happen you think i did you know what my seniority is now one year and during the 10 years i was your so um we've seen this one before it was it started feeling familiar uh and um i realized oops we have seen this before so um here's the thing like i'm trying to find another film to show you that's short enough because i have to go take a covet test uh two so i'm gonna show this next film um and this is gonna we have not seen this before so enjoy so one of the problems found in both business and teaching is that of communication letters of course can communicate very well to a limited number of people mostly on a personal individual basis but there are broader needs for communication various types of announcements must be posted in many places mailing pieces are needed for advertising and promotional work agendas make meetings flow smoother and accomplish more workbooks assist the teacher to make this written communication easier and faster many different machines have been developed the simplest is the typewriter making carbon copies the number of copies of course is limited the liquid duplicator is usually used to produce 50 to 100 copies one of the most commonly used machines is a stencil duplicator or mimeograph this one is manually operated this one is electrically operated generally speaking stencil duplication should be used when fifty to several thousand black copies are wanted there are machines of all ages and makes in use today you may see or use some of these but regardless of the machine their basic duplicating principle is the same a stencil sheet with a wax coating which can be removed by typing or drawing with a special stylus and a pad that supplies ink the ink passes through the stencil where the wax has been removed and makes an impression on the paper supplies available for mimeographing are varied first of course is the stencil these are for average work they usually come in letter and legal sizes cellophane or plastic covered stencils give print like copy these diamond pressed or stamped are for repetitive needs photo etched stencils are used to reproduce pictorial copy as are electronic stencils addressing stencils are printed so that addresses can be easily typed when these are run on perforated gummed paper periodic mailings are easy and inexpensive a wide variety of insects may be purchased which can be cemented into stencils to give professional results amino scope with these styli guides and screens makes it easy to do hand lettering and drawing the selection of paper is important choose a genuine mimeograph paper which should be lint free and will absorb ink properly it comes in many sizes colors and weights our mimeograph demonstration will be made on this machine you'll have to adapt the operating procedures we show you to the machine you use ready to go to work well practice makes perfect and here are some tips that will make mimeographing easier and the results better first clean the keys of your typewriter a bristle brush will usually loosen the dirt and clear it away typing through the ribbon will produce fuzzy copy so move the ribbon control to stencil position remove the protective sheet that comes with the stencil and insert the cushion sheet with the wax surface facing the stencil insert the top of the stencil into the typewriter making sure that no wrinkles form use your paper release lever match the dotted line at the top of the stencil with the metal guides on the typewriter this straightens the stencil for a professional job type evenly use a slightly slower speed and heavier touch to produce the best copy when an error is made roll up a few spaces pull back the plastic covering and brush a light coating of correction fluid over the error let it dry a few seconds replace the covering and tap the correct key lightly you may want to tap it again to match the other characters a lighter character looks less conspicuous than a heavy one after you finish typing the stencil use the paper release lever to help take it out of the machine remove the cushion sheet if you want to add hand work do it on the mimioscope for best results the stencil backing sheet goes through a slot on the mimi scope the stencil is held tight against a writing plate over an illuminated ground glass turn on the light and raise the horizontal ruling edge to position for your work select a lettering guide and place it on the ruling edge in alignment with your typewritten copy use the correct stylus for each guide its number is often stamped into the lettering guide use a firm even pressure but be careful not to tear the stencil when you want to mimeograph drawings or other artwork tape your copy to the mimioscope in the position you'll want it to appear on the paper put the writing plate over the copy and under the stencil surface now you can easily trace the artwork special screening plates can be used to produce shaded effects always use the right stylus for the job you are doing you are now ready to run off copies on the mimeograph there are a few simple steps to follow for the most efficient operation of the mimeograph machine first get out your paper and place it in the feed tray adjust the paper feed set the counter for the number of copies you want to make open the right hand locking mechanism and loosen the ink pad cover re-lock the mechanism and peel back the cover open the left hand locking mechanism remove the cover and throw it away insert the stencil face down lock the top end into place keeping a firm pressure on the stencil and backing sheet rotate the drum so that the stencil goes on smoothly and evenly tear off the backing sheet and throw it away run one copy and examine it carefully there are many adjustments that can be made so that your work will appear at its best the paper may be adjusted laterally diagonally or raised or lowered on the page you may need more ink the inking process varies with different models this particular machine uses a paste ink rather than a liquid leakage caused by fingernail scratches or other breaks must be checked correction fluid or a piece of scotch tape will cover them a switch starts this electrically operated model a separate switch starts the paper feeding a lever controls the speed at which copies can be run off if you've made all your adjustments properly your machine should now be running good copies just the way you want them but keep your eye on them anyway you should never go off and leave a machine running this machine automatically stops feeding paper when the required number are run but you have to turn off the motor lower the paper feed tray then if you're going to save your stencil to use again run a stencil file folder through the machine so that you can identify your stencil later remove the stencil and lay it in the folder and carefully blot it raise the paper feed tray then put an ink pad cover on the machine in place of the stencil run about five sheets of paper through the machine to smooth out the cover then clamp the loose end run about five more sheets this seals the ink pad so it will not dry out position the drum so that the arrows or stop here marks are opposite each other engage the brake lower the feed tray and put your unused paper away it's a handy means of identification if you replace the paper in the original package your work is now completed and your machine is prepared properly for next time we've shown you how to mimi graph with black ink you'll find that color can add a great deal of value to your work and it's easy to do just put a fresh clean ink pad right over the regular ink pad cover clamp it at both ends put on your stencil and lock it at one end only leave the backing sheet on and fold both of them back dot colored ink around the areas that you want mimeographed in that color smooth the stencil over the new ink pad so that your colored dots will transfer fill in these areas with the same colors put the stencil down and you're ready to run off copies in as many as six different colors one at a time or all at once if fast drying inks are not used quality copies should be slip sheeted to prevent ink smudges on the back regulation cardboard slip sheets used paper or cut newspaper can be interleaved between copies allow a few minutes before removing the slip sheets as you've seen it's easy to produce good mimeographed copies if you follow a few simple rules clean typewriter keys set ribbon control to stencil make good corrections type evenly letter and draw carefully choose the right paper use your mimeograph properly practice and be ready to do your part in aiding communication in schools or offices through modern mimeographing techniques so one of the problems found in both business and teaching is that of communication letters of course can communicate very well to a limited number of people mostly on a personal individual basis but there are broader needs for communication various types of announcements must be posted in many places mailing pieces are needed for that can be made so that your work will appear at its best the paper may be adjusted laterally diagonally or raised or lowered on the page you may need more ink the inking process varies with different models this particular machine uses a paste ink rather than a liquid leakage caused by fingernail scratches or other breaks must be checked correction fluid or a piece of scotch tape will cover them a switch starts this electrically operated model a separate switch starts the paper feeding a lever controls the speed at which copies can be run off if you've made all your adjustments properly your machine should now be running good copies just the way you want them but keep your eye on them anyway you should never go off and leave a machine running this machine automatically stops feeding paper when the required number are run but you have to turn off the motor lower the paper feed tray then if you're going to save your stencil to use again run a stencil file folder through the machine so that you can identify your stencil later remove the stencil and lay it in the folder and carefully blot it raise the paper feed tray then put an ink pad cover on the machine in place of the stencil run about five sheets of paper through the machine to smooth out the cover then clamp the loose end run about five more sheets this seals the ink pad so it will not dry out position the drum so that the arrows or stop here marks are opposite each other engage the brake lower the feed tray and put your unused paper away it's a handy means of identification if you replace the paper in the original package your work is now completed and your machine is prepared properly for next time we've shown you how to mimi graph with black ink you'll find that color can add a great deal of value to your work and it's easy to do just put a fresh clean ink pad right over the regular ink pad cover clamp it at both ends put on your stencil and lock it at one end only leave the backing sheet on and fold both of them back dot colored ink around the areas that you want mimeographed in that color smooth the stencil over the new ink pad so that your colored dots will transfer fill in these areas with the same colors put the stencil down and you're ready to run off copies in as many as six different colors one at a time or all at once if fast drying inks are not used quality copies should be slip sheeted to prevent ink smudges on the back regulation cardboard slip sheets used paper or cut newspaper can be interleaved between copies allow a few minutes before removing the slip sheets as you've seen it's easy to produce good mimeographed copies if you follow a few simple rules clean typewriter keys set ribbon control to stencil make good corrections type evenly letter and draw carefully choose the right paper use your mimeograph properly practice and be ready to do your part in aiding communication in schools or offices through modern mimeographing techniques hi everybody
