so okay hello i'm skip alzheimer and welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and uh sometimes comment on them um that last film was a giant tuna it came from the oregon archive which is a archive based in pittsburgh where we scanned a bunch of films for them and that was a silent film um and it was probably shown uh for general audiences it might not have actually been shown in schools just kind of um something somebody could rent from the mogul film library in new york city um so you know it's it kind of uh predates the outdoor channel by 50 years or so um all right so like i said we watch old 16 millimeter films i actually have one set up that i had set up yesterday that i totally forgot about um this explains the difference between hot and cold um for us in raleigh uh yesterday was hot and today is cold it dropped 20 degrees last night so enjoy so [Music] ooh that's hot [Music] mmm that's cold [Music] boy am i getting warm ah that's nice and cool [Music] be careful that water is boiling hot [Music] there now that bolt is red hot here you are this is ice cold hot cold warm cool boiling hot red hot ice cold well now how do we decide when something is hot or cold or in between let's think about that here we are eating soup again what tells us the soup is hot our tongue and our lips how about this our face is warm sure we feel the heat on our skin or we feel the cool air on our skin so our face is cool and this one oh cold our fingers tell us the glass is cold okay let's put it all together tongue and lips face fingers hey we're talking about parts of our body hey yeah right our body can tell us when things are hot or cold or warm or cool our body can tell us the temperature of things when you put your toes in the water what is your body telling you the temperature of the water and what do you call something that tells you the temperature can we call the body a thermometer sure yeah yeah well why not we can say the body is a kind of thermometer that tells us something about temperature but how reliable is it is it as reliable as most of the thermometers we know like this one in the house or this cooking thermometer in the meat or this oral thermometer or this outdoor thermometer all of them are measuring devices for showing temperature every thermometer has a scale and numbers on the scale not much different from this measuring device a ruler you move along the scale mark off an inch or five inches like that on a thermometer the liquid in the tube does the measuring it moves along the scale when the liquid in this tube is warm what happens it stretches yeah it expands and when the liquid gets cool it shrinks contract goes down right again let's check that we'll take this cone uh you won't mind will you and we'll put the tube in the ice cream is cold so the liquid goes down yeah the sand is warm and the liquid goes up yeah now let's take our tube and put it back on the board we'll try to make our own scale let's take this water with ice uh you won't mind with you and we'll put the thermometer in the liquid stops going down it's almost freezing it's the point where ice turns to water or water to ice yeah good uh pardon me may we test your water be careful that water is boiling hot i know i just want to mark that on our thermometer there boiling now we've marked the places where water freezes and where it boils these places are called freezing point yeah and boiling point on most thermometers we see the freezing point is 32. the boiling point is 212. 32 degrees 212 degrees instead of the whole word degrees we use this little symbol 32 degrees and 212 degrees now that we have two points that are always the same we can mark off the scale like this most thermometers won't look like the one we just made but remember they work the same way let's check here's the ice drink we had the temperature is 32 2 degrees above the 30 mark now let's check boiling water that's two hundred twelve two degrees above the two hundred ten mark let's check one more the temperature of the human body is usually about 98 degrees well we said about 98 degrees it's really a little more six tenths of a degree written like this we say 98.6 that's normal body temperature so 32 degrees is the freezing point 98.6 degrees is the normal body temperature 212 degrees is the boiling point very good now if you remember these three temperatures you'll have a better idea of what hot and cold mean most outdoor thermometers don't show the boiling point weather never gets that hot but they do show the freezing point 32 degrees you know that less than 32 is pretty cold lower temperatures and below zero are very cold indoor thermometers usually don't show the boiling point either rooms never get that hot 70 degrees is a comfortable room temperature for cooking high temperatures are needed 150 degrees that's pretty hot remember this one we called it red hot the actual temperature is about 600 degrees gosh wow and when he said this soup was hot how hot was it well here let's uh you won't mind if i check this with you good hmm let's see 111 degrees you see it's a bit more than our body temperature speaking of body temperature let's have a look at that it's 101 and now that's warmer than normal body temperature so we know he has a slight fever well that's one good thing about a thermometer it's a very exact way of measuring temperature all the thermometers we've been using are that's a big word fahrenheit fahrenheit thermometer yeah someday you may see a celsius thermometer it works the same way just has a different scale well do you think you know a little bit more about hot cold warm cool boiling hot ice cold okay remember a thermometer helps us tell more exactly that looks cold how cold [Music] oh this is real cold what do you mean cold hey this is nice and cool how cool [Music] ah this is warm no it's hot [Music] this is hot how hot [Music] this is hotter how much hotter red hat how hot is that oh that's hot [Music] so we've got some program notes here and they're almost unreadable because there's um like mold or like some sort of weird thing um try to make out one of these draw pictures of the four seasons write a sentence describing what kind of temperature there might be in each picture if a person's temperature is above 98.6 fahrenheit what does that mean what is the boiling point on a celsius thermometer freezing point explain how a thermometer works how does a stove oven thermometer help people cook so this is recommended use kindergarten low primary special education um in science so there you go that's that's what is in these notes sometimes um all right it's time to learn about some girl that fell asleep once upon a time there was a beautiful fairyland kingdom in the middle of this land was a castle [Music] centuries stood watch at its outermost wall their good king worked very hard making laws and proclamations his chancellor helped him out the king and queen were very lonely they had no children one day the queen was bathing in the royal pool with her was lady hebsaba who loved to talk and talk and talk suddenly the queen thought she heard a small voice and said shh the lady had seven talked on and on and on so the queen moved closer to the bank of the pond there was a turtle the turtle said i have an important message for you i wish to announce that a lovely little princess is to be born to you and the king the queen could hardly believe her ears a princess is to be born how wonderful wonderful [Music] so they waited for the baby and there was the new princess [Music] it was a beautiful little baby [Music] everyone was so excited and delighted they decided to name her briar rose [Music] the chancellor told the courtyard to spread the news throughout the land wake up wake up the courtyard shouted a princess has been born the news spread like wildfire people lie shouted cried with joy a princess has been born a princess a princess has been born a princess has been born soon after the court met because the king had an important announcement to make [Music] said the king we will have a christening party and invite all the fairies so that they may bestow their wishes upon our fair princess are we going to invite all seven fairies and why not well what about pity pod she has a terrible bump on her nose and looks would spoil a pretty party you're a wicked girl to say such things we shall invite all seven fairies so the jester decided to write the invitations he was very proud because he had just learned how to write [Music] as soon as he had finished writing the invitations he turned them over to the king who gave them to lady hepsebot who said she knew where the fairies lived [Music] she stole to the edge of the lawn and stopped she didn't really know where the fairies lived she held up one invitation she tried again and two more and now she had one left this must be the one for that ugly pity pod [Music] had a plan [Music] preparations were started immediately for the big party sacks of flour pheasant cakes and candies poured into the royal kitchen soon the party was underway all the guests and fairies were there all but pitypod who had not received her invitation poor pitypod watched the gay party from high up in a nearby tree oh everybody was having such fun chattering in line [Music] then the fairies bestowed their gifts pitypod shrieked and leaped from the tree right smack into the middle of the table i have a gift for the princess she will grow to be beautiful but on her 17th birthday she will prick a finger on a spinning wheel and die [Music] the fairies had a hurried meeting and then one of them stepped forward to the king she said the princess would not die but she and the whole kingdom would sleep for 100 years sleep for 100 years the king gave the chancellor orders to have all spinning wheels destroyed [Music] the notice was posted everywhere destroy all spinning wheels at once [Music] before long all the spinning wheels had been carted away [Music] the princess was growing up [Music] and she was very beautiful on her 17th birthday a small party was held and the cook baked a special cake three layers hive that afternoon lady hebse was strolling through the woods talking as usual [Music] suddenly she stopped [Music] there was a little old lady with a spinning wheel hepburn didn't know the old lady was pitipod in disguise she was so pleased to see a spinning wheel after so many years she forgot what disaster it might cause and she hurried off to tell everyone there's a spinning wheel in the woods she shouted and ran on and on she blurted out the words in front of the princess [Music] then she remembered [Music] i'll stop the princess you tell the king the princess got closer and closer to the woods [Music] all at once everyone became very drowsy and they all sat down and went to sleep [Music] and they slept for 100 long years during that time many princes had heard of the strange happening but try as they might they could not get through [Music] on the hundredth year still another prince tried strangely enough the bushes and briars parted and let him through [Music] he climbed the castle wall and saw the sleepers [Music] the courtyards the chancellor and the queen and the king [Music] and the jester now why would the jester point that way why would the jester point [Music] the prince turned and went into the woods [Music] and then he came upon briar rose the sleeping beauty [Music] she was so beautiful he decided to kiss her [Music] and when he did to his amazement she awoke [Music] [Applause] [Music] now everyone had awakened and they all gathered by the throne [Music] the prince asked for the hand of the princess in marriage the king and queen gave their consent for it was plain to everyone that the prince and princess were in love and that they would live happily ever after [Music] this is a fairy tale but just let me say it's not appropriate to find sleeping women in the woods and kiss them without their consent it's also not appropriate to curse young women with uh falling asleep for a hundred years um there's a lot of that's inappropriate about about this and most those fairy tales are totally inappropriate i mean they're fairy tales they're not real but so don't take too many life lessons in fact don't take any life lessons from fairy tales because they uh they don't always teach the right thing even when it doesn't involve something like this i mean you think about little red riding hood and the life lessons there yeah don't don't think too hard about it uh this next film is something that you can um look to for life lessons this is danny's dental date we love the alliteration enjoy [Music] wow [Applause] [Music] [Music] hello this is mrs daniels i'd like to make a dental appointment for danny at 10 30 well that's fine i'll see that danny is there on time [Music] [Music] we better get out of here quick and go to the country where where no one can find it [Music] hello [Music] always chewing on a stick aren't you cat maybe i shouldn't have run away i bet you think i'm a bad boy well you'd run away too if you had to go to the dentist maybe you wouldn't have to go to the dentist if you could chew sticks and bones like i can well what's so different about your teeth well i eat a lot of tough foods so i have big strong crushing teeth look at the marks on this stick the crushing teeth work something like a nutcracker you know you have crushing teeth too danny yeah i didn't know that which ones are they oh they're back in your mouth a little ways you have eight all together two up above and two below on each side of your mouth they're called bicuspids because they have two points well if i have bicuspids i guess i could eat bones too if i wanted to well maybe not bones but you should eat all kinds of food to exercise your different teeth you have other kinds of teeth danny besides bicuspids that's right captain take me for instance hey who said that [Music] hi there cup and daddy oh hello bushy what about your teeth where do you see the swirl front teeth i've got they're called incisors because i eat lots of roots and nuts my incisors have to be sharp and thin edged see what i mean you have incisor teeth too danny maybe they're not as big as mine but they're right in the front of your mouth gosh i guess i do have incisors i've got eight of them four up above and four below yes sir incisors are great teeth and nobody has a many bigger than i have yep i guess you're right bushy thanks for hey where'd he go oh bush he is a busy little squirrel and he has lots to do well come on danny let's look for some other kinds of teeth okay cap you you go on ahead i'm coming [Music] wow [Music] hello there tom this is my young master danny hi tom how are you hello danny hi cap danny is looking for different types of teeth what types do you have wow i've got all kinds but my canine teeth they're wonderful they're for holding and tearing my food and they're called cuspids because they're pointed something like these calls you have cuspids too danny but they're not as sharp and long as mine they're on each side of your incisors one cuspid up above and one down below on each side of your mouth gee you sure know a lot about teeth tom well you will too danny well thanks tom we'll be seeing you yeah come around sometime for some fish tom bye [Music] hello there daisy how's the alfalfa hello cat oh the alfalfa is fine just fine this is danny my young master will you tell him something about your teeth why sure kath i'd be glad to you see danny i have very large and strong grinding teeth because i chew my hay and grass all day long and of course i chew my cud too grinding teeth work just like this get the idea you've got grinding teeth too danny they're called molars and they're way back in your mouth they're two molars up above and two down below on each side of your mouth you should eat tough foods like i do danny so your molars will get a whole lot of exercise well i guess i'd better be going it's just about milking time and i want to be in the barn when farmer jones comes to do the milking gee i never knew you animals had all those different kinds of teeth bicuspids and incisors and cuspids and molars i guess i wouldn't have to see the dentist if i eat bones and nuts and tough meat and hay but gee who wants to eat all those things you don't have to danny you can eat the things you like your teeth also need nourishment foods that have all the different vitamins cap is right again danny now i furnish you with two important foods the first one is milk you should have four glasses or a whole quart of milk each day [Music] the next food i supply you with is butter you should eat at least six teaspoonfuls of butter or margarine every day [Music] each one of these little squares you see mother cutting off the cube is about a teaspoon full [Music] don't forget me i furnish another important tool danny thanks you should eat at least one egg each day or four or five a week anyway yes sir daddy milk butter and eggs then you should eat one large serving of meat and cheese or fish every day also you should eat some of all these vegetables and fruits here they come potatoes [Music] cauliflower [Music] well let's see how many of them you can name danny [Music] so so [Music] do [Music] so [Music] well see here's danny in bed the real life danny he must have been having a dream [Music] but i guess that appointment with the dentist was real because danny is hurrying to get there on time at 10 o'clock [Music] oh don't worry cap danny will be through in just a few minutes you just wait right there [Music] well here's the dentist office and danny is right on time [Music] the dennis assistant puts danny in this special chair and puts a clean towel around him so he won't get his shirt dirty then she adjusts the headrest so he can lean back comfortably without getting too tired and here comes the dentist he's just washed his hands so they'll be nice and clean hello there danny how are you well danny we're going to look in your mouth to see if you have any holes or cavities in your teeth now open wide so i can see real good on this instrument i'm going to use is a feeler we dentists call them explorers it's just a sharp point that lets me feel the teeth if there are any holes in them the point sticks that way i know there is a cavity beginning to form in the tooth the hole that should be filled here danny you take all of this mirror and i'll show you a little cavity you see there it's black and this feeler sticks in it that's one we'd better fill well now in order to fill it we have to grind out all the bad part of the two all that black and decayed part and we have little instruments that are called drills but they're really grinders and they grind out all of the bad part here i'll show you how they work oh i'm going to carve my initial on my fingernail see now let's try it on your fingernail we're going to do the same thing to your tooth that we did to your fingernail this will grind out the decayed part you'll feel it sometimes it jars and grinds and sometimes it hurts a little bit but not too bad now we'll squirt some water in your mouth to wash out all the bad part of the tooth we ground out you just lean over and spit they say you have a pretty good spitter danny now we'll dry out the hole in the tooth with little balls of cotton we want to be sure it's nice and clean then we'll sterilize it with medicine that we put on these little pieces of cotton sometimes it tastes funny but don't let that worry you next we take some small rolls of cotton and put them in your mouth they fit under the tongue on one side and next to the cheek on the other they keep the saliva from getting the tooth wet here danny you hold the cotton with your finger now while i'm drying out the cavity the nurse is putting some filling material in a little glass jar there's mercury and silver and they mix together to form an amalgam that we will use to fill your two this filling material is put inside this instrument and all i have to do is to poke the end and some of the amalgam goes into the hole in your tooth now i have to pack the material in i have to push hard so the filling will fit real tight and won't come out it will seal the cavity and make a whole tooth again sometimes we have to add filling material several times before the tooth is completely filled and it all has to be pressed in real good so you hold your head tight danny so that i can press down hard there now we're almost through with these little carving instruments i'll shave away the extra filling material and make your tooth nice and smooth and comfortable be sure though not to chew on it for a couple of hours otherwise we you might break it and we would have to do it all over again which we don't want to do do we now we'll wash out your mouth and give you a chance to spit out some of the excess filling material there now you're all through come back in a few days and we'll polish the filling say danny do you know how to brush your teeth if you brush them real good you won't have so many cavities first thing you need is a toothbrush with bristles that are straight across about two rows wide and six rows long and a good husky handle that you can really get hold of now when you brush your teeth always brush toward the chewing surface down on the uppers and up on the lowers in brushing your teeth start up on the gums then brush down over the tooth surface with a rotary motion do it several times in one place and then pull the brush forward and make sure you don't miss any spots it's a good idea to do this in front of a mirror the first few times you try it when you get to the middle of your mouth you'll have to change the toothbrush around always start up on the tooth on the gums and brush down over the tooth surface now you do the same thing on the inside of your mouth that you did on the outside when you get to the curve or arch in the front of your mouth just take the end of the brush and pull it forward but remember to start up on the gum and bring it down toward the biting surface if you always do this little particles of food up under your gums will be squeezed out and can be brushed away in the lower mouth do the same thing start down on the gums and brush up the same thing is done on the inside of the mouth again in the inside of the front of the mouth just the ends of the brush are pulled over the teeth always starting down on the gums now when you get to the chewing surface the bristles are just laid on the tops of the teeth and the brush is rotated or vibrated try to force the bristles into the tiny tooth crevices well danny miss johnson will give you an appointment to come back and get that filling polished so long [Music] look miss danny is giving danny a brand new toothbrush now he can keep his teeth white and clean [Music] well cap you didn't have to wait so very long did you danny has his teeth all fixed up and he feels pretty good about it [Music] it really wasn't so bad was it danny [Music] remember then it just ends we don't know what happens um i would say we should show the film in reverse and basically him being gassed um with the nitrous oxide then it turns into the puppet world in the marionette world so that film had had everything in it had giant teeth it had marionettes had talking animals it was so great all right we got one one more film to watch this is set up on the telecity and i just realized i forgot to change the title but we'll as we watch it i will change the title uh this one is also uh some somewhat of a fairy tale or it's not real enjoy [Music] hello there good to see you i've quite a story to tell you see this ball and chain my best friends really it all makes sense when you hear my story i'm the man that gravity forgot [Music] the stork that brought me to my mother and father knew something was funny about me right away gravity didn't pull me down like it pulls everyone else down [Music] and when gravity forgets about you you don't weigh anything at all [Music] even so i was a happy child [Laughter] [Music] my mother was always afraid i'd fall and hurt myself but it's gravity that makes you fall [Music] my father worried about me too [Music] son all this floating around is too dangerous here play on your horsey instead [Music] dang you up there throw us down an apple here you are thanks [Music] i guess i must have surprised lots of folks [Music] huh [Music] hey haven't you ever heard of gravity some you're big enough to go out and seek your fortune so i found myself a job as a chimney sweep [Music] i watched all the other chimney sweeps and i knew i could do the job without a ladder [Music] [Music] that day i broke all the chimney sweeping records every last one [Music] but then the boss called us together see how many chimneys this little guy cleaned i want all of you to clean them like he does [Music] i got the feeling it was time to move on next i tried to be a window washer [Music] finally i tried to join the king's army they measured me and they weighed me but you guessed it [Music] zero zero zero out no one understood then i saw the king he would understand i had to see him [Music] ah what's this pardon me sire but because gravity forgot about me they won't let me join your army gravity who cares i've got my own problems with gravity be gone away scat gravity i hate it if it wasn't for gravity i'd have an air force i need someone who can make my planes fly [Music] hmm ah i've got it [Music] yes sir he's been spotted good follow him it's him get him yes sir no when i knew they were looking for me i hurried home to hide but it was too late [Music] he's lighter than air sire he's the one who can make this plane fly [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] rats fire stop him stop him [Music] being forgotten by gravity just seemed to cause me problems then they put a ball and chain on me and it was wonderful [Music] and when they set me free they let me keep it [Music] and so my friends always be happy that gravity remembers you [Music] all those nutty dutch nutty nutty dutch yeah so we um unintentionally uh watched a bunch of kind of uh fairy tale fablish fantasy things sometimes that just happens um thank you
