that last film i mean this is all shot in atlanta i need to do a little bit of research on that so i'll do that and try to get back to you um anyways we watch old 16 millimeter films and that was something i got from someone in atlanta who got them from a cameraman who shot footage for various news agencies and this was kind of leftover stuff i showed something else from that collection um when i showed uh mrs gary powers interview after uh gary powers was scheduled to be released by the soviets and she was going to make her way to dc to see her husband um so anyways there's some interesting stuff in there um so let's see we watch old 16 millimeter films as i said uh yesterday was uh i kind of took the day off so i just used clips of people and animals eating um and uh yeah it do it [Music] so [Music] me [Music] oh [Music] wow um i'm a big fan of course of the stop the projector and discuss films um there are uh lots of different ones like that um they're often called trigger films where they uh trigger discussion um and it's triggered in a good way not a bad way all right what else we got set up here um let's learn about the city of hope when brazil built their new um capital brasilia enjoy [Music] this is a story of one of history's great dreams a dream coming true in the green and lonely highlands of brazil here where wildcats once roamed a proud and industrious nation is fashioning its dream into a truly 20th century city the new capital brazilian sidali dais faranza city of hope is how the dream was expressed by andre melro boldness energy and confidence he wrote this may be the crest given to you by posterity the boldness and concept comes from the mind of city planner lucio costa niemeyer [Music] the planalto palace stone the house a bowl complementing the architecture of the planato palace is another guardian of liberty the supreme court [Music] with a biometric form seemingly lighter than air the sculpted head of president joselino kubisek relieves its simple planes and angles theo costa wrote of his design for brasilia it arose from the primary gesture of one who marks or takes possession of a place the sign of the cross itself in the past have distinguished the great works of architecture a simple compact design in which the beauty is derived from its proportions and from the structure itself costa's appraisal of neymar's work written over a decade ago still seems relevant he said it has the kind of individualism that one may term generic and fruitful it represents a leap forward in time because it's a prophetic revelation of what architecture means for the society of the future [Music] koster city has been planned to house over a half million people along its second access superblocks are being built each a self-contained village with its own schools and shops this design is functional and consistent with the city's entire concept windows a traditional brazilian detail are frequently shaded and accented with louvers or tiles neighborhoods are spawning in the new capital and children are in happy accord with their surroundings [Music] supermarkets have opened in the residential blocks inside is the efficiency which self-service has brought to another of life's necessities [Music] one of brasilia's first churches our lady of fatima symbolizes the inherent faith of the brazilian people its exterior decor of brazilian tile is a silent hymn to the dove of peace [Music] brasilia's first big date with history was the 21st of april 1960 inauguration day for the new capital [Music] as though drawn by destiny's magnet brazilians from the length and breadth of the land came to their proud new city for this day when brasilia became the nation's new capital was the fruit of an old dream a dream which began almost two centuries ago [Music] now after a frantic paced four years of building president kubashek could move the government from rio de janeiro to brasilia he had given the dream its form [Music] the heartland of brazil was open and its people proudly watched brasilia's inaugural parade the people could have they wished remember that it was 1823 when jose bonifacio named the yet unborn city brasilia or 1891 when the first republican constitution ordered the transfer to the inland capital or the 20th century when surveys and plans brought the dream closer to reality but this was their day viva brasilia viva brasilia [Music] on the edge of the city is embassy row which president dwight d eisenhower visited early in 1960. here he compared brasilia with the opening of the united states owned frontier embassies of the world will build along the avenue of nations [Music] is a city of energy it was conceived in the energy of man's mind and vision it was built with the energy of petroleum which man's mind released from the earth to assist the energy of his muscles at first everything needed in the city came by aircraft a tiny airstrip became a busy airport [Music] roads came next brasilia was deliberately placed far inland to open up the nation's vast interior [Music] while a permanent brasilia is rising a temporary city thrives next door it is the free city a bustling friendly place like all western towns the base camp of the construction men who are building brasilia [Music] brazilians are coming to brasilia to start a new life to make a new home [Music] [Applause] the construction of brasilia is under the control of a government company called for brevity's sake it is headed by israel pinero a man who knows how to multiply the skills of men by the might of machines to build a city in the shortest time [Music] history in the making the work to be done was monumental night and day it went on until the city could be opened and dedicated in a miraculously short time [Music] the cathedral of brasilia perhaps best characterizes the audacity of oscar niemeyer as well as his sense of unity and harmony its 21 columns rise from a perfect circle in a grand sweep toward the incident [Music] for years to come brasilia will grow and the face of the land will change earth movers handled with the skill of the men who are now part of the dream supply the drive which is shaping the new frontier [Music] it is not merely the hope but the conviction of brazil's menavision that brasilia will hasten the country's march forward president kubashek may have sounded the proper note when he said i awakened the giant and shook him from north to south um thank you uh who was it humble humble oil standard oil i can't remember suddenly the oil company that sponsored that film there's a couple in that series the journey series where they basically go to exotic remote places where they have a stake in uh oil drilling so there you go all right i got another film set up on the telecini behind me um the great thing about having this machine is that you know i can go to the back where all the films are and i can pull some films and say like oh i haven't seen this one and then we get to watch it um so it's i have a bunch of files also that i refer to so but in between that last film was a file of from an earlier time that i scanned uh or digitized some 60 millimeter so there's a good balance so we get to watch more stuff uh this way so uh this next film is uh where is it uh social responsibility it's my hobby and beau bridges might be in it i just have this feeling um enjoy how's it going can't complain you know go around save the world i don't know about that you don't watch cartoons on sunday oh no what do you do you sleep in or something here bum i gotta get some out of the car you put your books in the trunk hey man what are you doing oh nothing hey man i was just looking at your uh collection of pills what are you doing with so many it's my hobby collect pills no really what are you doing with them nothing i don't really feel like playing basketball you want to come over yeah yeah sure you know if i don't get that transmission fixed another week i think the thing's going to fall out why don't you fix it yourself i don't know how that's a good reason really scott what's with the pills she's making a little spending money that's all are you dealing i hate to use that word i prefer to call it my hobby you a buyer hey i got some off the good reds oh no man i'm not into pills teach his own you know that stuff can really wipe you out i don't touch this stuff myself yeah but you're selling it look man i don't force people to buy from me they didn't buy from me they'd buy from somebody else right so there's no reason in the world why i shouldn't make the bread is there who do you sell to i don't know anybody you'd be surprised how many pill heads there are in school in our class yeah and a lot younger too you sell to them too so that anybody who's got the money that's really heavy scott forget about it man it doesn't concern you it does now why because i know about it well forget about it will you okay sure hey hey how's it going not bad what you do oh not too much how'd you do on that test oh she asked about ten questions i wanted in the book no she always does that you're gonna get something to eat yeah sure come on you mean if i knew some guy was stealing would i turn him in yeah nah i don't think so why should i he's not doing anything to me and anyway i don't want to get anyone in trouble man that's real trouble but yeah but he's screwing up a lot of people yeah that's not my responsibility it isn't no i've got enough to worry about just taking care of me well suppose you saw a strange guy you know hanging around a playground would you report him or wouldn't that be a responsibility either oh no that's different why because that guy's forcing his strip on other people we dig a dealer only sells to people who want to buy why are you so hung up into this anyway what you gonna do i don't know i don't know what to do well be cool whatever you do be cool i don't know i don't think you can bust him why because you can't he's your friend and i know this is as simple as that i think you should just forget it great and i think of all those stupid kids in junior high downing those pills man it really screws me up well then bust him but don't expect people to like you for it what do you mean well people don't like a guy who would bust a friend oh but this is different oh is it but he's stealing the kids and you're busting a friend well if i don't do anything and just let him deal hell i don't know hey what's happening you got a minute sure why is that serious uh it's about that stuff i saw in the back of your car oh ed i told you to forget about that it's just that i feel you you shouldn't be doing it man it's wrong i know you sound just like my mother hey i'm not fooling around scott i'm asking you to quit dealing well you are and if i don't what are you gonna do about it you're gonna bust me that would be just great i get kicked out of school maybe even thrown in jail what are you some kind of boy scout oh scott hell what you're doing is wrong man it's really wrong listen to you you're unbelievable just stay out of what doesn't concern you you know what i mean you're really something you're gonna quit dealing sure as soon as i sell what i have in the car no i mean now no man i'm not what are you gonna do about it huh you're gonna bust me [Music] there are a number of ways that you could look at this film before you talk about them though we'd like for you to know something about the film a film about social responsibility it's not a term people use very often in everyday conversation as we see it ed is caught in a dilemma social responsibility or what he owes to the society he lives in demands that ed somehow stops scott from dealing to kids but personal loyalty what he owes to a friend demands that he do nothing if ed turns in scott he loses a friend maybe he loses other friends too when barbara says people don't like a guy who would bust a friend you get the feeling she might not like such a guy but if ed follows scott's advice and simply forgets what he has seen well suppose later ed learns that some kid scott has sold pills to his oh deed he gets a lot of pressure from his friends scott lays it on hard and heavy bobby and then barbara seem to have no trouble deciding where ed's responsibility lies and the kind of pressure they put on him is very hard to resist but put yourself in ed's place what would you do suppose you found out that scott was selling pills to your 12 year old brother what would you do then would that change your responsibility one evening a few years ago a young woman was assaulted and pursued down a new york street repeatedly stabbed and finally killed throughout her ordeal which lasted nearly an hour she repeatedly called for help more than a dozen nearby residents heard her cries but nobody even summoned the police until it was too late and what reasons might people have in a situation like that for not trying to help have you ever witnessed something involving strangers and thought maybe you should get involved did you get into it what made you decide one way or the other some argue that only a very few of us recognize an obligation to people beyond our immediate circle of family friends and associates in other words that very few of us have a strong sense of social responsibility do you agree 1874. um so somebody said hey haven't we seen this before it's totally possible uh although i what i do is i maintain a list of all the films that i've shown and sometimes i forget to add to the list but um yeah i didn't see it in the list and i didn't see a note on the can that said that i had shown it but it's totally possible um but this is a series of films that uh beau bridges uh narrates well he doesn't narrate at the end he kind of sits drinks coffee and asks a bunch of questions at the end so that's his deal um what do we got coming up let's uh do you really know what uh your talents are what your gifts are well the armed services want you to know and then want you to enlist so they can use those services that's the whole deal of the asvab the armed services vocational aptitude battery which i took in high school and i'm sure some other people did too and this film is all about that so here's as bad fence high school testing program and the asvab adwab is an acronym for the armed services vocational aptitude battery our nation's most valuable resource is its people as one of the nation's largest employers the department of defense fully appreciates the contribution of the educational community in providing the nation with educated citizens high school graduates who participate in an effective career exploration and planning program will be more likely to be successful in their choice of a career [Music] there are literally hundreds of training opportunities available now for motivated high school graduates in the armed services no one can absolutely guarantee that in-service jobs will later lead to employment in their civilian counterparts many factors current economic conditions the state of a particular industry or profession the ratio of jobs to the labor pool all have a bearing on civilian employment but there are good opportunities to learn interesting and rewarding skills in the armed services right now department of labor projections indicate that during the 1980-85 period college graduates will outnumber the jobs available which require degrees yet fewer than one out of every four high school students is enrolled in vocational education a 1972 national advisory council report on vocational education provides the following examples some fifty six thousand fourteen and fifteen year olds are employed full time in the labor market the ratio of youth to adult unemployment has risen each year since nineteen sixty and the college dropout rate 50 percent has earned the unenviable distinction of being one of our more stable educational statistics we have an obligation to make our students more aware of the many and very rewarding career opportunities available in the vocational technical occupational areas the department of defense fully supports programs for career education at the national state and local levels through the high school testing program it offers counselors assistance in administering an effective vocational aptitude test battery providing students with information that will give them a better understanding of themselves helping students explore and make choices about various career fields after graduation additionally the test results are used by the armed services to identify and classify potential recruits since 1972 approximately 1 million high school students per year have taken the asvab the content of this battery is based on over 35 years of research conducted by the military services on the measurement and effective classification of the large and diverse group of young persons who enlist in the military services each year let us now direct our attention to the asvab test as it is conducted in a typical high school career awareness is an integral part of any career education program we can't very well instruct a student in specific technical areas of which he or she may not even be aware there is no possibility for occupational choice unless the chooser has some awareness of what the choice entails the awareness process demands the availability of occupational information the understanding of what that information means and perhaps most importantly the knowledge of how that information relates to that student's interests aptitudes capabilities and since career education is a lifelong process individual goals taken as a whole the implementation of an effective career guidance system emerges as a formidable task particularly to professional counselors with a caseload of from 500 to 1500 students per counsellor the exact time required for administration of the asvab varies with the number of students and the local situation counselors should allow three hours for the test the test is composed of 12 individual tests here is the breakdown of the 12 tests general information numerical operations attention to detail word knowledge arithmetic reasoning space perception mathematics knowledge electronic information mechanical comprehension general science shop information automotive information research on matching aptitudes to training situations has shown that various combinations of aptitudes are of value in predicting success in given career fields thus the 12 individual asvab tests are combined into six composite scores to give a fairly accurate indication of the directions in which a student's talents may lie asvab is one of the relatively few available nationally standardized aptitude tests built around vocational technical indicators as previously mentioned the scores on the asvab are used to construct aptitude area composites in five human ability areas and one which provides an indication of academic ability these composites are not intended to give students job-specific information but rather to encourage them to make further exploration into their own abilities here are the six composites and the individual tests from which they are derived verbal measures knowledge of words ability to understand written material and to deal with verbal concepts the composite is a combination of the scores on the general information word knowledge and general science tests analytic quantitative measures reasoning abilities as well as those relevant to understanding quantitative concepts the composite is a combination of the scores on the arithmetic reasoning and mathematics knowledge tests clerical measures speed and accuracy in using letters and numbers these are abilities relevant to clerical type activity the composite is a combination of the scores on the numerical operations and attention to detail tests mechanical measures understanding of mechanical principles as well as the ability to visualize objects in three-dimensional space the composite is a combination of the scores on the space perception and mechanical comprehension tests trade technical measures information relevant to automotive and various shop practices the composite is a combination of the scores on the shop information and automotive information tests academic ability measures abilities needed to do well in school and formal types of training the composite is a combination of the scores on the word knowledge and arithmetic reasoning test if a student happened to score highly in the verbal composite it's reasonable to assume that he or she might have an above average chance of success in training in career fields leading to jobs such as medical service technicians traffic manager police officer legal secretary nurse let's assume that a student did well in the analytic quantitative composite that student would in all likelihood have an aptitude for training for jobs such as computer technician purchasing agent lineman communications technician bookkeeper telecommunications center specialist if another student were to score well in the clerical composite but perhaps not so well in the analytic quantitative composite the composite scores might encourage the student to work harder on math subjects but a good score in the mechanical composite might indicate success in technical training programs leading to job areas such as stereo equipment technicians graphic arts specialist electro-mechanical technician metal worker now let's suppose that a student scored well in the trade technical composite this student might have a reasonable expectation of doing well in the following jobs diesel mechanic hull technician marine engine specialist brake specialist engine diagnostician machinist if a student scored well in the clerical composite it could point toward a degree of success or fulfillment as a passenger service representative stock clerk bank teller key punch operator clerk typhus if a student did well in the academic ability composite it might point towards some success as a dental technician meteorologist pharmacist or personnel counselor asvab can only indicate an aptitude for absorbing training within different career areas it was not designed to determine the precise job that a student should pursue but it can identify areas in which he or she has a vocational aptitude and should also help point toward a greater likelihood of success in a given career field we have shown only a fraction of the great diversity of career areas that the student might pursue asvab can be helpful to all student groups in career exploration regardless of their future educational plans let's talk now to a counselor who has heard of but is not completely familiar with the asvab and the high school testing plan how do i arrange for the test you contact your local recruiter from any branch of the armed services are there any costs involved and how are the tests administered there are no costs or paperwork whatever and the tests will be administered by trained military or civilian testers now we do encourage the schools to provide their own proctors for best results but the services will provide proctors if requested in what form will the scores be returned to the students each student will receive a computerized printout that looks like this the portion on the left is detachable for the counselor's records an optional gummed label is available on request on each student how are the tests scored the student answer cards for each high school are forwarded to our centralized computer scoring facility they're then read electronically by a mark sense reader each student's composites and percentiles are computed and stored on electronic tape in addition a computer technique is being developed which will automatically check the consistency of each student's composite scores this technique will ensure that a composite will not give an inaccurate picture of the student's performance on the individual tests which make up the composite these student results sheets are then printed and forwarded to the school within 30 days what additional information will be made available to help me in using asvab test results oh we will provide you with interpretive background information counselor's guide specimen set and various technical research report notes data in technical reports and notes which is updated periodically will also help you to understand the development of the tests and the meaning of the scores on a psychometric level in addition we have this mini guide which gives a brief description of the test battery how do i bring the upcoming test to the attention of the parents and students for display in the school we provide time and place posters for parental distribution we have pamphlets we also have a spanish language version also for the students to acquaint them with the basic format of the tests we have this pamphlet with some sample questions how will your record of the students test results be safeguarded the results of juniors and seniors only will be forwarded to all local service recruiters plus the coast guard in addition all test scores and individual identifying information will be maintained for not more than two years for research purposes however no information will be released to any agency outside the department of defense except the coast guard which is under the department of transportation do you impose any requirements on the schools for handling test score information oh this is a matter of local school district or state policy how can asvab assist a student in career exploration like most aptitude tests the asvab testing procedure cannot always predict with 100 certainty the correct field for each and every student but on the whole the test can be enormously helpful in stimulating student awareness of career opportunities in the vocational technical fields as you know the best place for a student to get career information is from his guidance counselor but we do provide additional job information on the equation of civilian and military jobs in this occupational source book all our examples have been hypothetical words how has asvab affected the lives of your students here are some statements from a few typical seniors whose decisions about careers military and civilian have been influenced by their asvab scores i scored well on the analytic quantitative i'd always been good at math maybe that helped got me thinking about working in computers i scored fairly high in the academic ability composite my plan is to go to college but i really haven't decided my major yet i'm kind of interested in personnel management i do well in the verbal composite i guess i'll go into some kind of legal work i scored really well on the clerical composite i've been thinking about the future maybe i'll be a legal secretary or a stenographer to my surprise i did fairly well on all parts of the test tray technical was my best after i graduate i'm not sure but i think i want to join the military even then i don't know what branch of the service i'll join i did well in my academic ability composite i plan to go to college i did best in the mechanical composite it really took me by surprise the high school testing program using the armed services vocational aptitude battery is available to local high schools at no cost or obligation to the student school or local government it is offered as a service which can contribute to the career awareness of the individual and thus benefit the civilian community and the military services in addition this program contributes to maintaining the all volunteer force by identifying likely candidates for enlistment in the armed services the only contribution required for members of the school staff is the scheduling of the time and facilities needed for the administration of the battery in offering employment to about a half a million high school graduates each year the department of defense recognizes that its investment in the high school testing program is repaid when the educational backgrounds of these young people reflect the benefits of effective career education programs thank you so much for your kind attention [Music] oh asvab um yeah it was uh i feel like i took it once as a junior in uh high school maybe i was a senior um anyways yeah like many of you commented uh once we took that test we were bombarded by recruiters i mean basically you know i think that people that finished the test they were like oh yeah we should yeah be in the military my dad was like yeah let's do it so then you can get your college paid for but i was not interested in that no way new way so i went to college and made my parents pay for at least the first semester first year year and a half um anyways uh i hope everybody uh had a great uh show and i hope everybody had a good thanksgiving yesterday and i hope that you found some time to relax and give yourself a break and not think about shopping or anything just relaxed i find that watching the the parades yesterday i'm a big fan of the philadelphia parade um for many reasons but uh i find that very relaxing and that's what we did just kind of draining some coffee had a cinnamon bun from a local baker friend and just watched a parade with former r b stars singing and lots and lots of confetti that um broke up the basically um when did with the digital signal if there's too much going on then you see it start getting really blocky because uh there's too much movement and the algorithm that's converting in real time is freaking out and it pretty much every single uh event has confetti or has a bunch of people with banners so it just completely turns everything into this uh mushy grid so i enjoy that i also enjoy about the philadelphia parade the fact that you have some really good performers and then you have some just kids who are just with streamers and so it's really it kind of um for me it has all the aspects of a really good parade um so uh anyways everybody have a great weekend we'll be back on monday um maybe facebook will play nice with me and share what i'm doing with everybody for some reason nobody on facebook was able to log on or comment or whatever i don't know what's going on but um thank you youtube commenters and uh we will see you tomorrow no monday we will see you monday i'm all discombobulated uh anyways please rewind love each other and uh give yourself a break you deserve it give yourself a break enjoy the rest of your weekend bye six five four three eight seven six five four three eight seven six five four three eight seven six five four three eight seven six five four three hey
