so so so so so so so so so so so so hello i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show what was it in that film um educational the the spice of the program um that was the motto or the slogan of the company that made that film beneath our feet that we just saw um and i'm guessing even though this was silent there is a mention at the beginning of a narrator so this was probably a sound 35 millimeter film that somebody um transferred um or made a 16 millimeter print that was silent uh that's my guess um or maybe we transferred it silent i'm not sure anyhow hope everybody had a great weekend uh we watch old 16 millimeter films here most of them are from our collection although we do that beneath our feet film was from the oregon archive which we've been scanning um over the last couple of years and sharing um this next film is uh let's see what i want to show you oh yeah i've been uh saying that i'd like to show some of the nasa film that i uh had been scanning the local university uh has a bunch of nasa films and video i also digitized a bunch of video um that i did when i was working on a nasa project that didn't quite uh take off liftoff uh but this one is uh part of that those films that uh talk about what's gonna happen uh when we land on the moon and how we're gonna get there and this is about the saturn rocket um so enjoy [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] three hundred years before the birth of christ the men of alexandria were already making scientific measurements of the stars and planets and always since then there have been those whose imagination turned their eyes and thoughts to the far reaches of space and so today man is positively and truly extending the knowledge and the control of his environment and for the first time is reaching effectively beyond his own terrestrial boundaries for the first time he is studying the sky from the sky project saturn is a major american contribution to this advancement [Music] saturn is the largest launch vehicle at present under development in the free world this is a rocket with a million and a half pound thrust that will put a 10 ton payload into orbit around our earth to the moon and into deep space a later more powerful version of saturn will be capable of putting up a payload of two and a half times this amount 25 tons it will be our first major rocket for space exploration and is being developed specifically as part of an overall scientific engineering program saturn uses the building block principle it is made up of various stages each of which will drop behind in space as its fuel becomes exhausted saturn can be a 2 three or four stage rocket depending on the use to which it will be put and the payloads it has to carry a three-stage saturn will be 185 feet high as high as an 18 story building and 22 feet wide at its base here is a scale model alongside the first stage of the real thing although scaled down to one tenth size it still dwarfs a man by comparison [Music] the two-stage saturn is planned as a kind of utility space truck to put large payloads into orbit around the earth with it larger spaceships could be refueled before moving outward on longer journeys saturn with additional stages will be used for probes to the moon and the farther planets a four-stage saturn will land precision instruments on the moon although other united states rockets may get to the moon before it saturn will put up the greatest payloads it can obtain information from several areas on a single moon trip and later return actual samples from the moon's surface [Music] most importantly saturn will send a three-man spacecraft the apollo around the moon and back to earth with refueling in space it could at last carry man to the moon's surface [Music] and so in the various industries and universities under the guidance of the national aeronautics and space administration research is planned techniques develop materials checked out the key word is precision and although the space age has but begun already we have accumulated a great wealth of technical and scientific experience basically saturn is the outgrowth of mechanisms that have been tested and proven the first guidance system to be used in saturn for example is an improvement on that used in the jupiter rocket however the guidance system for the centaur developed in the atlas centaur program of the space administration appropriately modified may prove much more versatile it is hoped that it will be capable of guiding saturn on more complex missions the saturn booster has a cluster of rocket engines so that like a multi-engine plane one engine may cut out without impairing the effectiveness of the launch vehicle and the propellant from the inoperative rocket engine will in some stages automatically be put to the use of those still functioning [Music] there are eight booster engines in the first stage of saturn six in the second stage and two in the third in trial small test models are constructed to scale and tests made to verify in fact what has been predicted in live but captive conditions measuring instruments register the various thrusts stresses and responses meanwhile full-scale production is going steadily forward project saturn's technical demands are widespread and its needs critical and so at various industrial plants across the nation the hardware the airframes the guidance systems the instrumentation and the rockets themselves precisely take their blueprinted shape ready for assembly newly devised parts call for unusual production methods undreamed of sizes call for gargantuan frames and molds [Music] for example this furnace needed to treat an upper stage engine is the largest of its kind [Music] following manufacture and checkout by the contractor each engine for the first stage of saturn is shipped to marshall space flight center for further trials [Applause] each engine separately undergoes final exhaustive captive test before it is approved these gleaming metal tanks plus liquid fuel will send man and his instruments through space at an incredible 25 000 miles per hour finally the uppermost stage with its two engines will propel the payload through space this space giant so swift and responsive on high is too ponderous and bulky when earthbound to be transported in one piece even the separate stages of saturn require special vehicles to carry them from factory to launching pad [Music] oversized trucks and barges come into being already experience in space technology has the hard-headed engineers talking about cost per pound of payload in orbit as if it were commonplace an example four years ago it cost between three hundred thousand and one million dollars to put one pound of payload into orbit but past investment is paying off now as investment today will pay off in the future today with advanced knowledge and increased production cost has been cut to about five thousand dollars per pound by truck and barge now the stages will finally arrive at cape canaveral [Music] here is the water route saturn will follow cape canaveral only a village in a resort a few years back today it means just one thing to every school boy rockets the launch facilities at cape canaveral have been constructed to handle both present and future versions of saturn the erecting gantry over 300 feet high is the tallest movable structure in the world it has direct connection with the block house from which and to which all signals come signals from the electronic tools which tell how the rocket is performing and without which there could be no launch more than 900 separate channels of information are relayed from the rocket to the recording and control equipment in the block house we have come far since the men of alexandria made their primitive observations of the heavens our space age is just beginning we do not yet know where it will ultimately lead us but we do know that project saturn will vastly increase our understanding of the universe and our potential to travel into space [Music] [Applause] [Music] well the change the sun keeps changing behind me which is why now i'm yellowish um i have it set to auto on the webcam so now it's i'm either blue or i'm orange or whatever uh anyways so behind me i have the telecini which is this piece of equipment that we'll see now in blue um that will digitize uh and broadcast um from film to a video signal without the flicker on the camera is actually aimed at the frame so you get a really crisp image uh and so we're gonna watch a cornet film um called i believe it's where do lost balloons go um enjoy [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] i wonder i wonder what do you wonder wondercat i wonder where do lost balloons go [Music] where do lost balloons go if you're curious enough you can find out well lost balloons start getting lost when they go up into the air lots of things go up into the air some things that go up into the air get moved by the air too [Music] [Music] air moves lots of things but as hard as i try and my eyes are very good i still can't see air [Music] sometimes i can feel it moving and pushing you can feel it when it's moving because air is real you just can't see it you can't reach out and touch it like you can touch a rock for instance because air isn't a solid thing like a rock is it's a gas air is more like water than it is like rock air is a gas a gas you can't see but you can see things through it it's an invisible gas that's all around us well if all this invisible gas is all around us how can things go through it it's a lot like when something goes through water [Music] it looks like the boat pushes the water aside while it moves through i see the boat does push the water aside and that's how it can move through the water the water is pushed aside as the boat goes through the space where the water was and then the water comes back into that space as the boat moves out of it so things that move through the air must push the air aside except i can't see it because the air is invisible but i still wonder what do you still wonder i wonder when lost balloons go through the invisible air where do they go but i'm curious i'll find out look there are two lost balloons but they're not going through the air in the same way that's right one is just being blown along the ground by the wind but the other one seems to keep going higher and higher [Music] what's different about them maybe finding out where they came from will help you find out what's different about them people are blowing up these balloons [Music] this is one the children blew up air blew away this balloon and air also fills these balloons it comes from inside the children who are blowing them up and people get the air for blowing up the balloons from the air all around them they breathe it in they blow it out you put more and more air into a balloon and it gets bigger and bigger the air must be stretching it that's right air inside things pushes too the air inside this balloon and inside these balloons too is like the air that's outside them is the air inside these balloons different look how they pull on their strings the air inside these balloons is different in fact it really isn't air at all it's a gas like areas but it's a different kind of gas this gas is called helium it's lighter than air balloons filled with helium float in the air [Music] in fact if you don't hold them down they go up up up through the air like this lost balloon i wonder i wonder what do you wonder i wonder what will happen to the lost balloon as it goes up through the invisible air if i'm curious enough can i find out yes but you need a way to go up into the air [Music] let's imagine you were being carried by a balloon filled with helium up up through the air let's see what it would be like are you comfortable so far but as you go up it gets colder and colder does that mean that the higher you go the colder it gets that's right thanks the winds blow hard up here wind is air that moves oh now i see why balloons can travel so far and something else is happening it's getting harder for you to breathe you need your own supply of air up here is that because there's less and less air the higher you go that's right now sometimes as a balloon goes higher the helium leaks out of it and it slowly falls back to earth but your balloon doesn't leak and it's getting bigger and bigger [Music] remember there's less air up here so it's easier for the gas inside the balloon to push on the balloon and stretch it [Music] and if you go high enough and if some of the gas inside the balloon doesn't leak out or if it isn't let out then a balloon bursts oh the fall is slower with the parachute its shape makes it hard for the air to get out of its way and so the air slows you down so you see all lost balloons and cats attached to them eventually fall back to the earth and now you're back in your favorite tree again and you know many things about lost balloons [Music] yes now i know where lost balloons go but there's a lot more for me to wonder about [Music] he's that ended a lot quicker than i thought it was uh so wonder cat there's a new character and i have a couple of films uh featuring wonder cat um so yeah we'll watch more of those so 1986 i was uh i was out of i was in college and so this this film grates on me in a way it doesn't give me that warm nostalgic feel like it probably does with some of you because it's um different uh feels different sounds different um wonder cat uh let's learn about some peace loving uh switzer switzerlonians uh swiss i guess you would call them uh so this is a frith film enjoy [Music] switzerland is one of those beautiful countries in the world with its magnificent snow peaks blue lakes this lovely country attracts five million foreign visitors a year and in this way the swiss learn to know people from many different lands switzerland is bordered by germany france austria and italy this small country surrounded by powerful nations has been able to remain neutral for the past 150 years in 1814 at the congress of vienna the great powers guaranteed swiss neutrality and this has proved to be in the best interests of europe the swiss people have always been ready to protect their country each man has his own gun and ammunition in his home the men are on call until they are 48 years of age today the swiss army can be mobilized in 48 hours their banks reflect the integrity of the people they attract capital from foreign governments as well as from foreign business in time of war deposits from both sides of the warring nations remain safe in this neutral country after the war the capital is then available to help the war-torn countries to give them hope and to speed their recovery is one of the reasons other countries want this country neutral lucerne is one of the many charming cities and is a starting point for trips to the mountains around the lake are many quiet towns the swiss people are artistic and beautify their villages with parks and flowers each home has a lovely garden even the high school has bright flowers in the window boxes it's sunday and the people stop to chat on their way home from church the friendly swiss are well liked by the foreign people who come to visit their country this town near the forest says a large lumber yard the tranquil loveliness of lake geneva is an inspiring setting for people to gather in the cause of peace for over 100 years geneva has stood for international goodwill perhaps more than any other city in the world the swiss welcome people of culture writers craftsmen and even political refugees several of the former kings and queens of europe now live here the league of nations was established here after the first world war a plaque was placed here in memory of president woodrow wilson and his work for peace the league later moved to this palace the united nations now in new york city has its european headquarters in geneva here is the home of the international labor board of the united nations the red cross was established here a hundred years ago its founders chose the swiss flag in reverse colors a compliment to switzerland and the work of the swiss people for international goodwill barn the capital overlooks the r river a branch of the rhine has plenty of electricity and is highly industrialized nearly half the people work in industry they have few natural resources or materials to work with and must import the supplies to make their product they're skilled and artistic and make things that take small amounts of material but need fine workmanship for example complicated machinery clocks and music boxes also textiles and embroidery burn has kept its old world charm the arcades over the sidewalks and the street clocks lend a medieval atmosphere to this bustling modern city burn university has over 2 000 students courses are held in german french italian and english because all these languages are spoken in the country the fine schools attract foreign pupils the seventh grade girls from the medicine school are taking a field trip first the girls hacked to the rutter farm to see the harvest many of the farm houses and barns are built under one roof because of the heavy snows katrina rutter helps lift the bundles of grain from the farm loft the average farm is small less than 15 acres and so the farmers must work hard to make a living the swiss import half of their food katrina feeds the bundles into a machine that separates the grain and drops it into bags next the girls see how pottery is made mister kane the potter works in his home the girls learn how he prepares the clay molds it and bakes it in the kiln mrs reese their teacher thanks him these young people are taught to be independent and in this small democracy and know how to do many different things next the girls hiked to the fields to see the potato harvest the swiss enjoy outdoor and the children learn to hike and climb when they're very young again many city families take trips to the country switzerland is not primarily a farming country it is mountainous with forests and high pasture land only one-fifth of the people are farmers all members of the family help harvest the potatoes and they enjoy working together women do much of the farm work as they load the potatoes they burn the dried leaves and prepare the ground for the next crop on these small farms they have time for other work it's not unusual for a farmer to be a ski instructor in winter or an alpine guide in summer during the long winters they often work in their homes the men do wood carving and the women make beautiful embroideries another friday the girls visited the city of tune on the river r an hour on the bus from bern the castle on the hill to the 12th century and was the home of the counts of keyboard switzerland is an old country rich in culture and with hundreds of years of heroic history most of us know best the story of their hero william tell the women come early to buy the fresh produce at their fine marketplace in this country there is on the average a bicycle for every five people few of them own cars the farmers arrange their vegetables attractively with the prices marked in shillings the people have achieved unity even though they are of many different nationalities they make change in several currencies and speak many languages both german and french are required in their schools lori helps her family and already knows how to tend their stall the children here often follow the trade of their parents the swiss people are prosperous and few are very rich or very poor they're famous for the care they give their less fortunate people life here is not hurried the people have time to enjoy their river boating is a favorite pastime and the children like to feed the swans the small towns on the lovely lakes are like picture book places it seems as if every part of this country is beautiful in the fall when the snows come far down the mountainsides it is necessary to bring the cattle down to their winter barns in the high summer pastures there are barns where grain is stored and often there are accommodations for the men who tend the herds the girls enjoyed this excursion as it's quite a celebration when the cattle are brought down to winter quarters the bell cows are decorated with flowers and often there are parties afterwards dairy foods are their main farm product they're famous for their cheese and condensed milk swiss chocolate is well known in foreign countries the girls have enjoyed the celebration and returned to the kane home for their picnic lunch distances are not great in this small country but is only about 200 miles long at its greatest length the girls have a chance to know their homeland and become closer friends they have fun and joke as they make plans for their next trip interlochen lies at the foot of the jungfrau there are many interesting trips for both tourists and mountain climbers everything is done to increase their comfort and enjoyment for the swiss are the most famous hosts in the world switzerland is often called the playground of europe then two tourists have been a key business for many years attractive eating places tempt the tourists with their excellent swiss food the farm houses are charming with their wide eaves for protection from the heavy snows chief the dog helps the family pull a load of hay from the fields grandfather is an invalid and cannot help is one of the famous resorts where climbers start their treks to the matterhorn many less active tourists take cable cars or the cogwheel railroad to the snow line without actually climbing in the snow the cable car follows the river and scattered farms and zermatt is left far below up up it goes past the meadows and forests it's a bumpy ride and gives a jerk every time it passes a post there are small chapels in the highest villages many people have lost their lives in attempting to climb the lofty peak the mountain tears have made it difficult for an enemy to invade the country at the end of the cable car ride people may spend a few hours before returning to their comfortable hotels the cable car also carries materials for building the high roads it's a steep climb for the villagers who carry their own supplies there's a hotel and also a chapel where high climbers pray before starting their hazardous ascent in this great solitude one has time to wonder how the swiss people have been able to maintain a neutral position with wars on every side of them we've seen some of the reasons and as we think about the needs of the world it is good to know that one small country could contribute so much toward peace and permanent goodwill throughout the world [Music] annoying the uh charlotte mecklenburg library is how they would insert their little title card in the film before the credits um so so frustrating and i mean i can't complain so basically what had happened is i heard that charlotte mecklenburg libraries charlotte north carolina uh which is about three hours from here um they were going to get rid of all their 16 millimeter uh and they were gonna have basically you go and buy stuff and i for whatever reason i don't think i could make it the the weekend that they were doing it and i found out about it way too late um but i contacted the person who was running it the librarian and i said hey whatever you can't sell i will take off your hands you know i'll just come and pick them up and you don't have to throw them away you don't have to worry about it and so um that was awesome because uh not only did i get my favorite cartoon in there uh quasi of the quackadero but i got all these really amazing films that i have not i wouldn't have known to pick like if i'd gone through a list i'd say like well i don't know what that is i'm not not so interested but because i waited to the end uh for the leftovers and the people who were collectors in that you know they pulled out what they wanted i'm sure i missed out some on some great stuff but i found amazing things in that in that um loaded up my crappy little ford ranger um and uh yeah it was it was phenomenal so anyways there's a fun story there all right this next film is uh another one that i have set up on the telecity here and it is red and it is scratched and it is a coronet fantasy so here is a legend of pied piper enjoy is a coronet fantasy based on the legend of the pied piper yes i know i'm coming [Music] what's that i don't know but we promised to be home catherine yes we promised mother not to be late for dinner don't you ever keep your promises i am the lord mayor i do as i plead yes my lord i hear something in the street is it the town's people coming again to complain about the rats is it no it's only catherine and john but the people have a right to complain it isn't safe to go on the streets john close the door [Music] did your children see any rats yes father the bars was full of rams my name is lord mayor they'll find no rats in this house not our wrath i can't open my door the rats will come in i'll speak with you here quickly very well well what is it the rats fit my baby your lordship my baby it's worse for the children the rats are everywhere haven't i promised to get rid of the rats as many weeks ago your grace nothing has been done i haven't kept your promise something will be done desire now leave me alone now what will you do how should know to do something of course i had to but i promise something oh the rats [Music] goes to blame for this there it goes under the table get up stick [Music] [Music] the same tune we heard in the forest [Music] i hear it it's coming down the street a strange tune look catherine oh i see it's a funny-looking man come away children it may be a spell [Music] [Applause] [Music] what now lord bear [Music] come in [Music] your lordship i have come to rid your town of rats what i am a piper with many tunes to play when i pipe no living thing can help but follow me you can pipe the rats away i can i have a very special tune for rats show me at once very well [Music] [Music] okay [Music] [Music] excellent truly superb and where i go they'll follow me oh take them to the river let them jump in then they'll never come back very well at once of course i must be paid before i play hey why uh of course anything 100 guilds agree no pipe away wipe away i'll take your word [Music] [Music] they're heading toward the river you got riddance you were wise this deed is worth more than a hundred gilders you don't think i intend to pay but you promised the rats will be dead he can't pipe them back again hey indeed [Music] and now if you'll pay me your lordship i'll be on my way to other towns with other tunes to play we are very grateful for what you have done thank you and yet it may be some time before we know how well you play 100 gilders as you promised uh yes you promised for all i know there may still be rats i assure you they are gone it may take some time to prove that it may take forever yes it may i cannot bargain with you again you promised the money now i shall take what i can until you are willing to pay oh what will you take [Music] what's this captain john come back don't listen what does he mean he's taking the children don't you see just as he took the rats gavrin john why don't you stop him good wife pay him the money you promised run after him please and bring the children back come back catherine john come back oh 100 gilders my lord no oh [Laughter] pictures [Music] [Music] mm-hmm it's very quiet yes the children are gone but they should be back soon they won't be back not until you pay the piper yes perhaps i should i'll get the money 100 gilders you can't pretend to pay i bought once [Music] the mayor is coming to take you to your children hurry [Music] bring them home quickly [Music] uh how much it took to make him realize he had to keep his promises [Music] my fellow american citizens i'm grateful to the motion picture industry for this opportunity to remind you of most important day in our lives december 15th is bill of rights day the bill of rights are the first ten amendments to the american constitution after the constitution was written it was felt that while this was an extraordinary document it did not provide the kind of guarantees for our individual liberties that a free country required therefore under the leadership of james madison the first ten amendments were adopted to the constitution we call them the bill of rights they are the most extraordinary and detailed guarantees of individual liberty that any people on earth now possess because of the first ten amendments to the constitution because of the bill of rights we are guaranteed freedom of speech freedom of religion freedom of the press the right of assembly and petition the right of trial by jury the right to be secure in one's own home protection of due process of law and private property and public trials and many other things that perhaps we take for granted but which we are guaranteed in the united states constitution even though the parchment of the constitution of the united states and the bill of rights is old and fading in the archives building here in washington nevertheless this document the bill of rights has meaning in all of our lives every day we owe a good deal to it i think it's appropriate that we be reminded of our blessings and those who made them possible remind our children of what a great country we have how much it's been through what it means to them remind our servicemen one million of them who serve overseas that they do not defend merely a piece of geography but also a way of life expressed in the american constitution expressed in the bill of rights expressed in the freedoms that we all enjoy thank you very much um so i showed that not because i wanted to make some sort of political statement um but i was just trying to find something that would fill in the gap uh that i had uh so i got that from uh we scanned stuff for craig baldwin and that was something that was obviously shown uh in theaters to commemorate bill of rights day in december december 15th boy i'd love to bring that back um that's all i'm gonna say about that um sorry about the puppets but not really because they were awesome uh and the voices sound so familiar they sound very much like uh some puppet stuff that coronet did years later um they were hand puppets though so i might dig some of those
