do do hey everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we show old 16 millimeter films and uh that last film was uh killer of the insect world which is basically as some of you pointed out we have some scorpions and let's just throw some other bugs at the scorpion and just see what happens and we'll film it and this film was made in the 20s and um was distributed by mogul brothers and ended up ultimately with the orgone archive in pittsburgh and we scanned it and we showed it to you so there you go um speaking of uh killers and destruction this next film is called seeds of destruction oh enjoy [Music] so [Music] seven links in the chain of life nature's raw materials the sun's energy the chlorophyll in the plants top soil the organization of the living community water forest nature's gift to mankind when our nation's pioneers first opened up this land of ours there seemed to be no limits to nature's bounty wildlife its water and its forest land no one stopped to think how this gift came into being for the young and growing nation needed lumber for houses for factories for railroads and the forests were attacked relentlessly the giant trees were cut trees that had taken hundreds of years to grow that forest was one of nature's most important reservoirs of water and guardians of the soil where it has been destroyed the whole character of our land has been changed leaving it exposed and vulnerable for example the branches and slash left over after the trees are cut dry into tinder perfect fuel for a carelessly dropped cigarette or a boat of lightning the hillside turns into flames and the fire spreads to the growing forest beyond every living thing is killed the forest which shielded the soil has gone never to return in our lifetime no this is not a bomb exploding it's just a raindrop single drops of falling water striking the bare fire swept soil but with the humus burned out of it the soil will no longer absorb the rain and when the rains come the water tears the loose soil from the hillside and sweeps it into the valley the seeds of destruction have been planted a link in the chain of life has been opened because the water runs off the surface too quickly the ground water slowly dries out and the water table falls below the reach of the grass roots some of the best species of grass die out thus the cattle and sheep that the land once supporters must be reduced in numbers or they will over graze the range overgrazing ruins and kills the land leaving it as vulnerable as a fire swept waste above the whole process of destruction gathers momentum to threaten the farmer on the fertile cropland of the plains for as he plows his land and breaks the protecting sod he must now guard against a triple danger flood drought and wind to blow the whole surface of the land may go up in the air this dust will come back to earth again somewhere but with its living organization gone and the humus blown out of it it is a blanket of dead sediment it will only smother and ruin the good topsoil it falls upon and the result another link has been opened in nature's chain step by step the chain of evil consequences flows out from that burned forest floods roar down the valleys of the mississippi and the missouri floods from the mountains of pennsylvania from the cut-over lands of ohio wisconsin minnesota montana and wyoming the water which promised life and abundance now becomes a frightful instrument of destruction murdering our land still another link in nature's chain of life cracks open a hundred years ago most of our rivers ran clear and beautiful and were filled with fish today mud and silt have wiped out the best fish in many of them and have driven out the most valuable varieties erosion is costing us three billion tons of soil each year day and night winter and summer our rivers are carrying away as mud to soil at once with fertile farmland soil that might have produced grain and meat to feed a hungry world our top soil our most precious possession is washing away and what will happen when it's gone exactly what happened to the famine ridden lands of china and asia minor and to the ancient civilizations which died with the ruins of their once little soil are we going the same way this was once a forest in california this was once a farm in tennessee this was good grazing land in new mexico this was a cornfield in mississippi today we as americans face a very grave responsibility the owner of productive land is a trustee a trustee responsible for the proper use of the land upon which the nation's life depends the hour is late the time to act is now the conservation agencies of the government the forest service and the soil conservation service the national park service the bureau of reclamation and the fish and wildlife service acting in cooperation with the states and with many private agencies have already joined our battle and are fighting the fight to save our land and to ensure the future by wise management while we as individuals cannot hope to accomplish much by ourselves we can do this we can seek out and join those private organizations which protect our wildlife and forward the cause of conservation and through them we can make our efforts effective the broken links which have appeared in nature's chain of life can be welded together again through our cooperation and understanding but only if we fashion a program of conservation built upon nature's principles live in harmony with nature preserve her balanced scheme and reap her bountiful harbor the soil destroy that balance and face a ruined land it is time to stop look and to remember that this is your land america belongs to you [Music] not quite the barry mcguire song but um still interesting nonetheless um yeah someone pointed out that uh i've been showing a lot of uh films with forest fires that is unintentional um because uh some of these films i don't know what they are um and what is it mon montana and ovulation overulation rutabaga puma reptiles vegetable um abdomen protean um all these wonderful different pronunciations uh that uh of films that we have uh either the narrator just didn't know how to pronounce it or um there was a different accepted pronunciation uh proteins is i think an example of that okay so behind me i have a telecenter hooked up we have a film uh we have not seen we're premiering it for the first time in the 21st century i'm guessing uh all bottled up enjoy oh [Music] uh [Music] i never really understood it like i didn't know what an alcoholic was or did why he drank all i knew was that they never paid any attention to us yeah and our mom was too busy drinking too but taking care of our younger brother i was mad all the time took it out on my kid brother i thought nobody loved me i never got any love from my mom except on my birthday once a year [Music] one day i was with this friend paco and me and him went down to the beach and we just started talking you know and i was pretty low and i brought this thing up hey man i'm not really free because my mom drinks a lot and i've got to stay home and take care of her paco said she's an alcoholic maybe dumb me i say what's an alcoholic he said it's a person who can't stop drinking they're sick at first i was confused when i thought of an alcoholic i thought of some bum yet my dad was in hotel management catering all of a sudden there was a lot of him being arrested he was drinking around the house i really should have known when he drank to get going in the morning and before we went anywhere an alcoholic is so much more insecure or immature or something their emotions weren't allowed to grow up they say i drink because you'll give me too many problems or i wouldn't drink if you'd only act right if you got better grades i'd stop the alcoholic uses any excuse to drink i wish someone had told me when i was 10 that your dad and your mom love you a lot and they're not drinking because of you but because they have to inside them i mean you're not the cause [Music] when you're drinking nobody's loving it just kind of crashed out it's a family problem the family is just as involved as the drinker if they only knew it my dad used to take me to the baseball game [Music] he had the best average in the ballpark he averaged two beers an inning i felt she did have a baseball game [Applause] and baseball was very important to me so i got so i hated him but i loved him at the same time he was our father but he wasn't there [Music] then he'd come home and fight with mom in the midst of all that we've come in you joined the argument that's the main thing in an alcoholic family staying up to two three in the morning arguing about us about them about their drinking the best thing you can do is to find somebody you can trust to talk to you know won't blab once you get it out it's easier to deal with there's some things you you don't want to do and that's one of them but it's got to be done it's not hard to find someone like this 12 million alcoholics in this country lots of them got kids just that makes you feel like you're not alone [Music] we can live a pretty normal life and love our parents without getting dragged down by their drinking are we gonna act or react one of the big things you know is to be more of an individual to go your own way you have to detach yourself and say i still love you if that's the way you want to live your life okay i can't change you because you can't live anyone else's life as much as i love you and as much as it's hurting i have to let you live your own life i wanted my father to pay attention to me so first i got good grades in school but he didn't care so i gave up and i started getting bad grades he didn't care then either finally i started to make fun of him around the house that did it he beat me i mean it hurt and i cried but at least he paid attention to me finally if there's violence the most important thing and a lot of times i know it's hard for somebody who's 12 or something is to leave split get out go outside for a walk around the block or something go to a neighbors especially if there's someone who understands you gotta save yourself first before you can save anyone else yeah find a friend you can talk to do anything but don't argue keep away from it if you can't leave the house go to your room and sit there if you don't have anyone to talk to get out a piece of paper and just write out your feelings just so you don't bottle them up inside for me it was drugs i was 14 when i began using [Music] drugs and drinking like my father i was ridiculed in school a lot because i didn't have sharp clothes and things like that dumb things and these people the dopers were the only ones who accepted me when i was out of it i could really laugh you know a lot [Music] i couldn't do without it nothing was really funny it was my form of escape but it was a trip to nowhere seems there's like a lot of families where one of the kids becomes an alcoholic too partly it's around you know and your mom or dad is drinking it so it must be okay partly it's because the kid wants to get even that's crazy the kid says you're messing yourself up and getting down on me so i'm gonna drink and mess myself up and get even [Music] drugs drinking if you're escaping you can't help them well still there isn't a hell of a lot you can do and pouring the liquor down the drain isn't going to help they just buy more we're saying why don't you stop drinking they've got to want to stop to want help it seems cruel but sometimes the best thing to do is let the alcoholic hit bottom it's when we start covering up for them we let them go on drinking your dad keeps getting busted and you keep bailing him out or your mom's drinking you tell the neighbor she's got a coal hey that ain't gonna help [Music] some hit bottom and go right on through but most get miserable sooner or later and want to change and when that happens you got to be ready one day they're sober and they say something like i wish i could stop drinking i need help [Music] what do i do when he asks for help you you have to know about the alcoholism council where you live or alcoholics anonymous [Music] at least have a phone number handy first get yourself straight that's pretty important i realized i couldn't straighten my dad out unless i was straight myself that's your responsibility to the alcoholic get yourself straight and know what help is it's not in the bottle or bailing them out of jail or blaming them it's not feeling sorry for yourself [Music] you couldn't go on being happy despite what your parents do if you let what other people do affect you all it does is screw up your own head i really think that the most important thing is for a person to know he can be himself and still be accepted that's hard when you're 10 or 11 or even 12. but it's something you've got to learn first before you can help the most important thing is to like yourself to live your own life and be happy doing the things you like doing your mom or your dad's drinking you can't let it be your whole life [Music] it's like my folks live their own lives [Music] i try not to worry about what they're doing [Music] and that's hard because i love them [Music] that was really fascinating um i'm gonna rewind it while we watch the next film and and try to give you a better sense of what year was um i apologize i had done a sound check on it but i had forgotten to rewind it so um i rewound it while we were watching uh anyways fascinating film um and then there's others out there uh for uh family members of alcoholics um that's pretty useful information any who oh i just realized that i didn't actually have the thing visible no uh all right what time is it um here's a film about first aid enjoy [Music] these people need immediate aid what would you do [Music] these are commercial type dressings found in most first aid kits the adhesive compress is the simplest type dressing and can be applied easily to any part of the body this dressing the bandage compress is used on larger wounds these small gauze squares can serve two purposes to cleanse a wound and to cover small wounds prior to bandaging the larger dressing is used for massive hemorrhages to hold a dressing in place three common types of bandages are used here is the triangular bandage used to cover large surfaces a cravat is formed by folding the triangular bandage and is used when pressure is needed or to hold a dressing in place perhaps the most familiar of all bandages is the roller bandage which can be used as a dressing and bandage combined the various body planes require different turns of bandaging these planes are ovoid such as the head fingers toes tapering forearm thigh angular elbow shoulders knee and flat the wrist torso or neck here is how to anchor a bandage place the bandage so that the first wrap is made on the bias then fold the point back over the wrap and lock it in place a second wrap is then made to secure the bandage to tie off split the end of the bandage and tear it far enough back so that the ends can encircle the wrist in opposite directions tie a regular half knot pass the ends in opposite directions and tie the knot this completes the circular turn and can be used on any flat surface of the body to bandage a short tapering surface a closed spiral turn should be used each turn must overlap the preceding one by one-third to one-half its own width if the tapered surface is longer you'll have to use an open spiral turn in order to keep the bandage flat against the surface gaps must appear as shown here this bandage will hold a dressing temporarily on bandaging an angular part of the body such as an elbow start with the anchor either above or below the part to be covered after the anchor is made pass the bandage over the dressing to hold into place now make a circular turn below the elbow forming the other anchor complete a series of figure eights over the dressing although this method is used primarily for angular surfaces it can easily be adapted to cover any body part finally to bandage an ovoid part the recurrent turn is used start at the base of the finger and make a complete lap over the tip of the finger and back repeat this three or four times completely covering the tip of the finger the recurrent turn is held in place by a circular turn sometimes regular dressings and vantages are unavailable or in short supply in an emergency strips of old sheets make good roller bandages but they must be clean here are some of the possible ways to sterilize in an emergency ironing washing exposing to an open flame in the event many dressings are needed heat them in a hot oven 450 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes petticoats and slips make good bandaging material as do women stockings these are just a few of the many possibilities for improvising remember the most important thing in all bandaging it must be neither too tight nor too loose this is natural breathing [Music] interruption is commonly caused in any of these four ways exclusion of air from the lungs such as drowning [Music] paralysis of the respiratory center this can be caused by electrocution [Music] displacement of oxygen in the bloodstream an example of this would be carbon monoxide poisoning this must not be confused with the fourth type which is caused by a low concentration of oxygen in the air such as an abandoned well or any airtight enclosure breathing has stopped death may follow what would you do [Music] the first aider should understand the basic principles of breathing four structures of the body are involved the windpipe the lungs the diaphragm and the ribcage here is what happens when we breathe the lungs are expanded and contracted forcing air in and out through the windpipe the lungs do not motivate themselves but are expanded by the action of the rib cage the rib cage expands in all directions and the diaphragm moves downward this action takes place for inhaling only exhaling results from relaxation of the rib cage and the diaphragm allowing the lungs to deflate artificial respiration may be accomplished in the following manner the operator kneels on one or both knees at the victim's head placing the hands on the victim's back and with the heels of the hands resting on an imaginary line between the armpits this is the compression phase and it decreases the size of the chest cage thus forcing the air out this is the expansion phase the action releases the body weight from the surface and enlarges the chest cage continue alternate compression and expansion of the chest pausing slightly on the expansion phase to revive infants and small children up to four years old the mouth-to-mouth technique of artificial respiration is recommended the first step is to make sure the air passage is open using the middle finger of one hand clear the child's mouth of any foreign matter hold the tongue forward with the same finger now place the child in a face down head down position and pat him firmly on the back with the free hand this will help dislodge anything blocking the windpipe to keep the air passage open the jaw must be placed in a jutting out position to do this place the middle fingers of both hands at the base of the jaw near the earlobe and lift the lower jaw from underneath and behind hold the jaw in this position with only one hand the air passage should now be open place your mouth over the child's mouth and nose and breathe into the child with a smooth steady action until you observe a slight rise in the chest at the same time place the free hand on the child's abdomen between the navel and the ribs and apply continuous pressure to prevent the stomach from becoming filled with air when the lungs have been inflated remove your lips from the child's mouth and nose and allow the lungs to empty repeat this cycle keeping one hand beneath the jaw and the other pressing the stomach at all times repeat the cycle about 20 times a minute mouth-to-mouth technique can be used effectively on persons of all ages in applying artificial respiration the most important factor is to start treatment immediately [Music] shock what would you do [Music] the first and most important factor in all cases of shock is to keep the victim in a lying down position until the injuries are known then if there are no head or chest injuries elevate the lower extremities so that the blood can flow to the heart and the head the next step is to keep the victim from becoming chilled do not overheat if anything it is better he be slightly cool rather than toasting warm keep in mind that it is equally important to get covering underneath as well as over the patient fluids even just plain water may be administered in small sips if available add a teaspoon of salt and a teaspoon full of baking soda to a quart of water if he is conscious allow the victim to take as much as he will tolerate of this in small sips shock may be difficult to recognize yet nearly always accompanies injury here are some of the symptoms the patient complains of weakness and dizziness his face appears ashen or pale breathing is shallow and rapid start treatment for shock immediately without waiting for symptoms to develop remember every injured person is a possible shock victim get the person off his feet and prevent him from becoming chilled shock is easier to prevent than to cure [Music] burns one of the most painful of all injuries what would you do [Music] the type or degree of burn can be identified in the following manner the skin is reddened in a first degree burn in a second degree burn blisters develop in third degree burns there is deeper destruction the underlying cells that form new skin have been destroyed these burn pads are packaged in this sterile wrapping and come in various sizes apply the pad over the burn and hold it snugly with the bandage the exclusion of air from a burn by the application of a thick dressing relieves pain and the sterile dressing prevents contamination in the event you have to improvise clean soft material makes one of the most effective burn dressings sterilized by ironing towels can be used for added thickness and the hole secured with strips of cloth in severe burn cases keep the victim lying down and treat for shock a burn familiar to all of us is sunburn for mild sunburn salad or olive oil may help in the relief of pain limited exposure and the use of an effective sunburn lotion are the best preventives however if blisters should appear with a sunburn do not break them apply sterile dressing with all burns the main objectives are to relieve pain prevent contamination and treat for shock [Music] narrator um sounds familiar and so he's definitely done narration for some other films that um we have in our collection that we've shown um were they first aid films i'm not sure i can't really tell for sure um thanks uh for the heads up about not having my neon sign um lit um sometimes i get caught up and there's a lot going on we got multiple computers multiple things scanning uh i get a funny email you know stuff like that um so i forget like oh yeah i need to turn that on um like microwaving my leftover spaghetti all that stuff it's like a long checklist of stuff uh and sometimes i forget something um you know maybe i need a big checklist on a board uh this film is about checklists enjoy checking make sure you know how equipment you're going to do asking information from the other when an oversight can mean death the guy calling the shots is pretty careful he doesn't want to leave anything to chance [Music] from experience he puts together a set of rules that can keep him out of trouble he has and uses a checklist [Music] when a man faces danger you can bet he has some kind of checklist to make sure everything goes right whether the list is printed or in his head he can't leave anything to chance if he gambles and loses the bet he's had it of course most of us don't have what would be called hazardous jobs but we can take some tips from the guys that do for instance the stakes may not be quite as high for a truck driver as they are for the captain of an airline but the next time you see an old pro filling his rig at a fuel stop notice that he looks around checking things out the smart driver like the pilot has a checklist he leaves nothing to chance working around heavy equipment can be as dangerous or as safe as you make it lots of things can happen most of the time it's not a matter of life or death but the smart workman keeps a checklist of possible dangers just like a skydiver he wants to cut the risk take this guy for instance he's been a mechanic for 16 years without a major accident in the back of his head is a checklist of things that might go wrong for example he always keeps his work area free of unnecessary tools and parts that might cause an accident and he wouldn't dream of working under a truck without tagging the ignition so he should know it's the simple things that can cause disaster and yet [Music] you can't afford to leave anything off your checklist [Music] that creeper ended a 16-year safety record [Music] the complete checklist includes leaning a creeper against the wall or bench when you're using it but this guy failure to follow a simple rule ended in a concussion all over the shop there may be a chance for a fall a glance in the direction you're going will give you a clue to the hazards ahead it's smart to add the word slow down to your checklist when you're around slick floors anytime you move from one room to another it's a good idea to think ahead about what the floor will be like on the other side of the door in the cleaning room there's usually oil and water everywhere [Music] when you have a ton of iron dangling from a chain it's hard to start it moving and hard to stop it especially on slick flaws the checklist in the back of your mind has to ask two things can you support the weight and can you keep your balance [Music] the degreaser tank in the cleaning room is another important item on your checklist the chemicals in a degreaser tank can dissolve sludge and grease from parts they also can dissolve skin or eye tissue when putting parts into this tank everybody's checklist ought to have a special warning about flat surfaces they make a big splay one slip just might cost you your sight look around your work area sometime you'll probably notice that every job has some detail that causes more than average risk to your eyes take a welder's jaw his eyes are protected by a mask they're shielded both from the bright light of the ark and from bits of hot metal but when he takes his mask off his eyes can be in real danger a tiny sliver of metal can have a pretty devastating effect how many near misses do you think you can afford before safety glasses become part of your standard equipment of course nobody can make you wear safety glasses this man though always wears them particularly when he's using something as dangerous as flux he always wears them that is except this one time it's hot the glasses are above [Music] right then an important item on the checklist goes out the window [Music] one of the first items on your checklist should be safety glasses worn all the time [Music] the damage done to your eyes in a split second can last a lifetime it just goes to prove that you can't afford to drop your guard for a minute and this rule applies to everybody to new men and old-timers too take this situation for example here's a man who really should know better but after all what's wrong with a little horsing around at coffee time item on everyone's checklist should be common sense common sense that tells you that a busy shop is no place for horseplay [Music] in this particular situation safety shoes were another item that got left off the checklist no matter what your job is if you're back in the shop it's smart to wear safety shoes and what about the fellow who stacked the crankshafts in the middle of the room foresight would have told him that somebody might knock them over he should have lined them up along a wall once in a while a little slip will happen something that doesn't seem like much at the time but it can cause trouble later let's say you have to take off the accessory drive pulley and you decide to save just a few seconds by using the open end wrench you happen to have handy now you know you're using the wrong wrench and that it might slip but where you make your big mistake is not going to a first aid station right away infection can be bad news a good checklist should remind you to have even the smallest cuts cleaned and bandaged [Music] lifting is something you do dozens of times a day but this simple activity can be one of the most vicious troublemakers on your whole checklist this fellow doesn't know it but he could be headed for a hernia he could get help but he isn't going to he figures he can lift the head by himself he does all right until he misses the first shot [Music] it takes just a little extra strain to tear something loose the best way to pick up something from the floor is to crouch don't bend over keep your back straight and your legs together also it's a good idea to keep your eye peel for anything that would make you lose your balance many a mechanic is nursing a sprain because he slipped on a little grease while he was carrying something heavy there's something about a chassis dino that makes you get out your checklist right away and start ticking off the things that could happen you make sure that the tie down chains are really secure it doesn't take much imagination to figure out what would happen if the truck got loose so you give the chocks an extra look-see when all the test cables are hooked up you're ready to go where are you what about the tire a little pebble caught in the tread can come out like shrapnel when the wheels are turning at highway speed what about closing the door dinos are fascinating pieces of equipment an outsider who doesn't know how dangerous they are might want to come in and watch so [Music] this operator learned the hard way that outsiders can't always recognize a dangerous situation you have to take some safety precautions for them leaving the door to the for someone to walk in and it would have too few minutes to check for pebbles lodged between the tires or in the tread accidents are always possible anywhere you go there's a chance disaster can strike but working with heavy equipment is not automatically dangerous every precaution is taken to make working areas as safe as possible guards are placed on machines walkways are marked extinguishers are near possible fire hazards dangerous equipment is plainly marked winches and lifts are handy for moving heavy loads but there's really no such thing as an automatically safe job safety is a personal thing disaster is right beside the guy who ignores his personal checklist ask the man whose job makes him responsible for hundreds of other people's lives every day the smart race driver gets help from lots of people but there always seem to be somebody who thinks he doesn't need any help would a diver hit the water before personally checking his gear not on a bet for the fella packing his parachute there's no question about it if the chute doesn't open he's dead the consequences of a poor checklist may not be quite that clear-cut for you but just like the skydive you make your own list and it's up to you to use it any questions [Music] i can check that gear in a minute so don't touch anything okay [Music] hey get down from there now [Music] [Music] what if it bumped that control by accident you'd be mincemeat by now what have i told you you don't work on equipment when the engine's running well i told them not to touch anything all right i guess i wasn't thinking you weren't thinking you mean you'll work on engines and machinery and not thinking your own personal safety hair shake hands with hands with danger meet a man you ought to know i used to laugh at safety now they call me three finger joe [Music] i was young and feisty never did things by the book just let me get my tool box and i'll take myself i climbed up on a dozier with my mechanics pride said you can keep it running friend while i poke around inside shake hands with danger meet a guy now i used to laugh at safety now they call me three-fingered joe although i learned a lesson i forgot it soon enough the knicks and burns and scratches showed the young ones i was tough till another morning i was grinding on some steel my other hand got careless and fed my skin into the wheel shake hands with danger step right up and say hello grinding wheels and metal are what made me feel three-fingered [Music] i've seen mechanics burning and i've seen them take a fall just to save themselves a minute i've seen them lose it all i've watched them caught in trouble seen them take a chance and lose they get careless for a moment and spend a lifetime with the blues [Music] [Applause] do [Music] [Music] walk [Music] oh move around inside [Music] shake hands with danger and some friends i used to know compared to them i'm lucky to be just three finger joes [Music] [Laughter] of course i had to play that i mean come on uh so checklist feels so much um like an inspiration for shake hands in that you have all these different scenarios and i guess cummings engine engine made it for people that worked on engines so it's kind of that niche uh working in the machine shop we're working in the engine repair uh facility um so very similar to the caterpillar centron film and it's just missing a really great
