do hello everybody i'm skip alzheimer and welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show we are watching old 16 millimeter films uh based in raleigh north carolina uh we got a lot of stuff and we keep finding more stuff and people keep donating more stuff and so we've got a lot of films to go through so i appreciate you helping me with this effort to watch films that we haven't seen before that last film was some footage uh from the uh some sort of raw footage for the league of women voters with 16 millimeter film most of the time you would shoot the footage on a camera then you would have a sink to um a magnetic audio tape recorder like a niagara or something like that and you would then sync the sound in while you're editing um there were some cameras that were made that are called auracons which actually had a little sound uh recorder that would basically um record uh the optical soundtrack um so when you process it the optical soundtrack would be with it um and then also there was magstripe 16 which a lot of news agencies use a lot of tv news would use that shoot it it would record the audio to the mag stripe then you would process it filament 11. that's basically when they say filament 11. that's what they're saying is that they shot the footage it's being processed it's being edited and they would have it for the 11 o'clock news so that's um where that term comes from some of you who are young probably have never heard that term but maybe you've heard it in like a 70s movie or something like that or 70s tv show well i'm watching the mary tyler motor show with my wife and there's a lot of references to film and getting the film in the film library and um there's cans of film so it gets me all giddy um anyways uh where are we at oh yeah uh let's learn about how important it is to be a military nurse enjoy somewhere at this very moment there is a military nurse helping a patient in need somewhere at this very moment there is a military nurse assisting surgeons in an operation under hospital and battle conditions an operation ranging from open heart surgery to the treatment of the skin abrasion somewhere at this very moment there is a military nurse introducing a father in uniform to the newest member of his family this is their story military nursing offers to work with outstanding medical people the latest medical equipment and of using the most advanced medical techniques in the saving of life and promotion of health [Music] she'll tell you that the silence you hear in this operating room indicates teamwork where the action of the hands of all is coordinated in a life-saving drama and she'll tell you of a deep satisfaction she is experiencing being a member of the military medical team of knowing that her professional services are needed [Music] and she means it [Music] you can see it as she performs some otherwise routine duty [Music] you can see it as she extends her professional knowledge in one of her classes you can see it in an impromptu bedside clinic she herself may have suggested [Music] you can see it as she reports a case study during one of the regular staff meetings she attends [Music] you can see it when she's engaged in research as this army nurse is working in a germ-free operating area [Music] you can see it as she assists in the pursuit of an elusive diagnosis means science has only recently provided you can see it in her deft handling of equipment attained through her program of self-improvement [Music] of course she'd be the first to admit that her enthusiasm was tinged with a bit of apprehension when she learned that she was accepted for active duty and learned she was to report for officer orientation the army nurse corps at the medical field service school fort sam houston san antonio texas for the navy nurse corps the united states naval schools command at newport rhode island and for the air force nurse corps the medical service school gunter air force base montgomery alabama as a graduate nurse each of these new military nurses had already acquired an open-eyed view of nursing with no illusions that military nursing would be an easy job and each doubts that the girls who finish their education in one of the military student nurse programs feel much different either at first but in a very short time the new procedures become familiar [Music] each of them begins to feel the esprit de corps shared by military people and before she knows it because it doesn't happen all at once each finds she's part of it deeply happy with it deeply satisfied by it each is content [Music] there are new people to meet all the time people within her own profession men and women whose mature knowledge she appreciates and respects [Music] men and women from whom she can gain in maturity and professional knowledge each of the services provides a sense of belonging in any one of its installations no matter what its size where friends also of officer rank can be made easily and quickly [Music] each of the services also offers a wide variety of programs for the military nurse to attend at this football game for example they can enjoy the relaxation and plain fun necessary to ease the normal tensions of an exacting profession no matter which uniform she wears a young woman's opportunity for service is about the same all their differences of course they're bound to be [Music] for example the navy nurse quickly learns to call the floor the deck and to tell the difference between port and starboard the air force nurse learns the effects of altitude and rapid decompression and the meaning of val salva [Music] while the army nurse soon learns the meaning of bivwank and finds the helmet can be quite comfortable although all are part of the same defense team and have many things in common each service has its own pride its own traditions that give it its own personalities each of the services considers the patient's welfare paramount [Music] hear my prayer in silence before me as i ask for courage each day grant that i may be worthy of the sacred pledge of my profession and the lives of those entrusted to my care help me to offer hope and cheer in the hearts of my countrymen for their faith inspires me to give the world and nursing my best instill in me the understanding and compassion of those who led the way for i am thankful to you for giving me this life to live [Music] [Music] ominous at the end it was like this is great what a great career what a great thing you're doing for your country [Music] um i still have pizza in my mouth it is lunch after all um thank you have a ham for uh donating coffee and doing it in the name of another uh commenter olds radio old radios not old like oldsmobile radios but old radios who is a super fan who's been watching av geeks online since before we were putting stuff on youtube so thank you have a ham and thank you old radio radios for your um diligence i hope that when you work on radios around the same time thanks to ebay and they both feature a very attractive young lady to get the point across so excuse me um i think that the target audience for this is not attractive young ladies but um workers who uh they feel like if we use a little sex appeal maybe we can get our point across um so here we go uh we got a film set up on the telecini behind me um one i haven't seen before and has absolutely nothing to do with the previous films that i've just shown and that's that's the way it is here at av geeks is random you don't like what i showed to wait 10 minutes and there'll be something else so this is belgium and the netherlands lands in people and i have a feeling i'm gonna have to tweak the thing again there we go all right here we go enjoy [Music] belgium and the netherlands are nations of many port cities the harbors of these cities are crowded with ships being loaded and unloaded the harbors are busy places of trade belgium and the netherlands are also lands of many waterways rivers and canals that are also used for trade water and trade are important to the belgian and dutch peoples as we shall see the netherlands and belgium are two of the smallest countries in north central europe together the netherlands and belgium are a little larger than the state of west virginia about twenty seven thousand square miles each of these dots represents a half million people a total population of more than twenty million how can so many people earn a living in these small countries here is one answer the netherlands and belgium lie close to the great manufacturers of europe great britain germany and france and handle many products of these manufacturing nations do these rivers and the north sea help make trade possible important rivers that flow out of france and germany have their mouths in belgium and the netherlands these rivers and their connecting canals play a major role in trade and transportation in the netherlands and belgium sometimes called the low countries in many places the coast of the netherlands is low so low that rising waters of the sea could flood the land to prevent this high barriers called dikes have been built by the dutch the netherlands and belgium then are called low countries because land elevations are generally low how has this affected farming the farms of belgium and the netherlands are small and well kept this dutch farm belongs to menhair de young he is telling his son about the potato harvest potatoes as well as beets and turnips produce a heavy yield per acre and are important food crops in both countries fine dairy cattle are raised on the low moist pasture lands farmers have increased their pasture lands especially in the zeitur zay area by reclaiming land from the sea how is this done first a dyke of concrete or stone is built this keeps the sea waters from further flooding the area to be reclaimed then in pumping stations like this electric pumps drain the water from the area the water is pumped into canals some wind mills are still used to aid in pumping water from canals into the north sea the land reclaimed from underwater is called polder land dutch farmers use the flat fertile folders for grazing and growing crops greenhouses are another way dutch farmers use their limited land area inside the greenhouses farmers grow fruits and vegetables in and out of season fine hot house produce includes tomatoes grown for domestic use as well as for export other exports are tulips and hyacinths raised by dutch farmers in the sandy soil of the coastal region some cut flowers are exported but the main reason tulips and other flowers are raised is for their bulbs after the plants flower the bulbs are dug from the sandy soil these bulbs are one of the chief exports to other nations so bulb raising is an important industry other industries include the mining of some zinc and lead in belgium in both the netherlands and belgium coal is the only plentiful mineral in the coal mining areas the people live in small villages most of the men here work in the mines from which thousands of tons of coal are taken every year and here comes some of that coal the netherlands produces coal for domestic use while belgium produces enough low-grade coal for export these containers of coal are being efficiently transferred by crane from the railroad cars to the familiar canal barges the coal dumped into the barges is then transported along the busy canals to the larger cities of the netherlands and belgium this barge is pulling into the harbor of amsterdam with a cargo of coal other barges and ships bring commodities from all over the world for amsterdam and the cities of the hague rotterdam antwerp and ghent are receiving centers for products and raw materials can you think of some reasons for this large volume of trade would access to the north sea by the netherlands and belgium be one reason during the age of exploration dutch and belgian ships sailed through the north sea and the english channel to find trade routes to foreign lands today dutch and belgian merchants continue to import goods from such overseas lands as indonesia and the belgian congo minhair husinger an importer is showing his son some of the sights of the harbor they pass buildings along the docks where merchants trade in raw materials they see raw materials that will be processed in low countries factories these are sacks of coffee beans imported from brazil how are these imports used raw materials will go to manufacturing centers goods may be transported by barge or by rail to large manufacturing cities over long distances when speed is necessary air freight is used for local transport trucks are important in delivering raw materials to the factories in some factories raw cotton is processed for use in textiles in others steel is rolled for the large ship building industry metals are also used in the manufacture of radios and other electrical goods diamonds from africa are cut for jewelry and for use in industry raw foodstuffs such as cocoa beans from africa and south america are processed and packaged for export in addition to factories where products are processed and packaged there are refining plants this large oil refinery is near the port of rotterdam a large amount of coal both domestic and imported supplies abundant power for many factories and a dense population supplies factory labor making it possible for the dutch and belgian peoples to process imported goods finished exports are shipped from the port cities on the return voyages the ships will bring more raw materials for the factories some boats are bringing fish one of the chief foods and exports of the low countries do all ships in the harbor belong to the dutch and the belgians no some of the ships belong to other nations many are from western europe important rivers of trade such as the scout the mers and the rhine have their mouths in the netherlands and belgium will ships and barges from germany have to pass through the netherlands to reach the north sea will ships from france pass through belgium to reach the north sea the development of port cities illustrates once more the importance of water and trade in the low countries in the netherlands and belgium we have seen that water and trade are two important ideas of geography related to the lives of the people how has water affected the geography of belgium and the netherlands how have dutch farmers used land that was once under water how is manufacturing related to supplies of coal and dense population important how have the people use their access to the north sea in building trade and supplying jobs perhaps now you can tell why the netherlands and belgium are sometimes called the trading workshops of europe [Music] i'm going to what am i going to do here i'm going to rewind this so you can see we're rewinding the film um you can see it's rewinding going backwards uh this is a film that i uh pulled from the stack and it had a metal reel on it that was oops on that was um causing issues it was rusted and so it was also had a tiny hub so i don't know if you noticed at the end the film was rolling a lot more it's because it was uh shrunken and warped uh because of that small hub um so uh somebody in the comments at least on facebook mentioned he said you know i thought that this was gonna be color that the beginning looked like it was color but then it was black and white um no that was basically the telecini you can adjust the camera and so it had a little bit of bluish in it and reddish in it um but that was fake um but then he mentioned like is it possible that you know they shot that this originally was color then they released cheaper black and white versions yes they most certainly did um and i'm finding that out because it's a coronet film and i'm going through the coronet collection and i'm finding more films from that collection that are color or i'm finding the original footage which was color and schools sometimes were like well we don't do we really need this to be in full color uh no and then they they buy a black and white version uh or if they buy a color version it's uh eastman color or ecto chrome and so it fades red or occasionally they would find a kodachrome so we're setting up the telecity for the next film and we're threading it through here and this is going over the sound head which is an optical sound head and the light in it then i'm going to thread it through this is the led lighting housing which is a matrix of leds here's the camera and then a mirror and so what it does is it basically um uh when it encounters a perf it says okay flash led and take a picture and that's what it's doing um and i did that because i wanted to show you two films and the way i have things timed out um wasn't working so that's why i wanted to go ahead and just show you what i'm doing this next reel is uh 70s tv ads some of these publishing it all makes sense now i was like what does why did the itt like have anything to do with this raggedy ann and andy movie um but now i get it um be interesting to see the history of itt and what they owned and who they are and all that and i guess they are a shadow of their former self if itt tech is um at all related uh all right so uh that was a bunch of tv uh spots which i feel like i haven't shown a lot of those um there's a bunch of nationwide commercials on there which were awesome because they didn't duplicate um so mason adams um i think he was on lou grant and he was on some other shows too uh but let's uh quickly watch this film about uh reading [Music] where does a person's community end it all depends it depends on his willingness to share in the mixture of progress and problems that go to make up the modern world yet willingness alone is not enough for there is a fundamental skill without which no one can share in the development of society that skill is the ability to read whether we want to share in the affairs of our neighborhood or our world we must know how to read and what is more how to read well with the speed and understanding that a complex fast-moving world demands [Music] the reading is always among the first things taught in school sometimes reading skill fails to develop when that happens difficulties arise which extend into almost every phase of life [Music] hey come on harold let's go oh say somebody's a meeting tonight i guess not more i have to stay home and study study what are we doing just now history all this time yeah why gee i finished the history assignment and had time to work on algebra besides gosh i didn't even get through the whole assignment why did you try and make that meeting well fellas never get a chance to see anymore um better not more but i'll make the next one for sure well all right hey come on let's get out of here harold wilson didn't know just what his problem was all he knew was it wasn't very pleasant to be making low grades and to have no time for fun his teacher finally asked his mother to come in for a talk i'm glad you could come in to see me mrs wilson well i have been worried about harold's grades lately well they aren't very good for a boy of his ability i've been wondering if you don't have many outside activities well he used to but that's just it lately he's been spending so much time studying mrs wilson suppose i arranged to send harold to the reading clinic they'll test him to see whether he's reading efficiently and help him if he isn't the next time the clinic came to his school harold was there the first thing they did was test his vision no trouble there next they measured his reading rate fairly slow for this type of material 180 words per minute and then harold took a battery of tests designed to measure his vocabulary his understanding his general knowledge of the world and to bring out his own particular interests they checked to find out just how quickly harold's eyes could see words and phrases after the testing harold's card was completed and sent on to the clinic director yes it all ties in lip movement reading rate fairly slow vocabulary below average i span short gee that sounds pretty bad oh it isn't too bad but your tests show that you have above average ability and your reading is far below your general level so what can i do mr winter oh there's a great deal you can do harold it's all summed up in this little pamphlet i'm going to give you to read you follow the reading improvement program set down here it won't be long before you notice the results now the first step is to find a good place to do your regular reading harold started his reading improvement program by moving furniture come in well what's going on here part of my reading improvement program mom what is moving furniture to do with reading well look it says right here the good reader finds a place to study and read that is free from distracting noises and interruptions i have to study 15 minutes every day oh i did i'm gonna move this chair now where i can be comfortable and have plenty of good light i don't think this lamp will do you much good why don't you get that old reading lamp out of the basement gee mom that's a good idea i've forgotten all about it i'll get it right away [Applause] it didn't take harold long to set up shop but it did take him some time to learn one of the first and basic requirements of reading concentration there were some temptations and there were some distractions [Music] [Applause] hey what's going on my video but after a while harold was able to get down to the real work he looked over the pamphlet the clinic had given him skimming at first skimming was a technique he was to learn more about later then he settled down to work on the first major point how to read rapidly it wasn't easy at first harold had a hard time trying to keep from moving his lips lip movement slows down your reading because it forces your eyes to take in one word at a time the amount your eyes take in at one glance is called i spam he had a hard time too trying to keep his eyes moving ahead trying not to look back even when there were words he didn't recognize at first but slowly he learned to control his lips and slowly too he found that his eye span was improving his eyes were now taking in more words each time they moved and he was able to keep his eyes moving forward now harold could sense that he was reading faster to make sure he began to keep a close record of his reading rate first he timed his reading of a short passage it took nine minutes then he counted the words in the passage there were about eighteen hundred twenty eighteen hundred twenty divided by nine minutes harold's reading rate was about 202 words per minute that was about 20 words faster than the rate he had first gotten at the clinic harold was improving and every new calculation told him that as he continued to practice he would continue to improve but harold was careful not to expect the same reading rate with every type of material newspapers he learned can be read faster than stories and stories can usually be read faster than study material some textbook passages just have to be read over and over again slowly and carefully on the other hand he found out that you can skim through some things before you read to get a general idea of what is inside and to find out what you might want to come back to in the course of a few weeks harold discovered that his reading rate for all kinds of materials had jumped considerably though it varied with different types of reading but meanwhile other improvements were being made too harold came to the second point of the reading program and so he began to learn to use study aids to look up names and words he didn't know and to record his new found information so that it became a permanent part of his knowledge as these new habits became part of his life harold found that he had more time to think while he was reading to ask himself questions about his work and to understand things more thoroughly as he came into the third phase of the program words began to string together in phrases and phrases came together in pictures pictures and ideas about the world that harold wilson had never experienced before [Music] the many days harold had spent learning to control his lip movements to increase his eye span and improve his vocabulary and read with greater understanding all this was beginning to change harold's attitude toward things yet harold himself hardly knew what was happening until one day when he was reading to the family reading aloud was part of the program too the speaker went on to point out that though lincoln never had the opportunity for much formal education he was a voracious reader that means he read everything he could lay his hands on and that's true too lincoln was a voracious reader how do you know oh i read it somewhere i read it somewhere a statement that harold wilson could now make with confidence and with a definite show of pride for now he began to feel a certain friendliness with all kinds of written material a friendliness based on his ability to read faster and to get more out of every word i am more than hey here else you're here to close down the recreational center yeah i heard about that they don't seem to think we can take care of the jukebox and other equipment they say it costs too much yeah see you guys there was an editorial about this in last night's paper said it didn't cost half the amount the council claimed oh yeah i read that tell you what harold the club wants to write a letter to the council you know study up on the history of the thing and find out how much it really does cost and what other recreation centers cost too of course it'll mean some library work okay by me i'll do it wow anyone can improve his reading if he is willing to work at it businessmen may learn to read in one hour reports that used to take three hours to read farmers may find through better reading a wealth of information in material they didn't have time to read before lawyers often want to improve their reading to keep up with new laws and court decisions even our fighting men are learning how important it is to be able to read well and easily acquiring this important skill as harold wilson learned is largely a matter of practicing a three-part program of reading improvement the first phase is learning to read rapidly this means learning to read without lip movement to keep your eyes moving forward and learning to increase your eye span to take in whole phrases quickly without pausing improving your vocabulary is the second phase among other things this means using study aids such as the atlas and dictionary the third phase is understanding what you read learning to get the meaning in what you are reading reading improvement doesn't come easily it requires constant and careful practice but keeping at it brings a worthwhile reward the vast treasure house of man's printed knowledge exciting stories of travel books on hobbies and crafts stories about people places and times most important of all as harold found better reading shows the way to a fuller enjoyment of the everyday adventures of life [Music] um what may i ask is a dear little cupcake like you doing with nasty old school books my dear child we haven't had school or books and ages no school really why don't you get rid of that school book you can drop them in here it'll get all burned up in there well of course it will dear child and so it should books tamper with man's basic natural ignorance now what could be worse than that but i can't burn this book at school property [Music] teaching you how to spell cat i know you'd rather play so why don't you throw all your books away [Music] [Music] see the flames growing higher burning boxes [Music] books will not make you wise and reading's bad for your eyes i am sure you agree so why don't you give all your books to me [Music] is [Music] books can only confuse teaching you things you should listen to me burning your books will set your mind free [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] um i really wanted to show that today so i like i changed what i was gonna show and how i was gonna show it and how it was gonna time it out just so i could watch that um quickly becoming one of my favorite songs chick hands was dangerous real good and uh won me this uh this painting behind me and allowed me to hold on to my clown thanksgiving painting but uh uh and i love jim stringer the guy wrote it but man books are for burning is real good it's real good um thanks everybody for tuning
