so so so so so so so so so so so hello everybody i'm skip alzheimer and welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show uh where we watch old 16 millimeter films and uh that last one was from the oregon archive and ultimately from the mogul brothers archive that was a camera store that had an archive of 16 film 60 millimeter films that you could rent and they ended up at anthology film archive in new york and then they got split up between uh prelinger library congress and oregon archive now what's fascinating about that last film is that squeak the squirrel the the gist of squeak the squirrel uh which is a film that came out in 1951 by lester beck uh and he he based that uh film off of a film that he shot in 1942 called adaptive behavior of golden mantle ground squirrels and um but this is obviously from the 30s uh and i'm wondering if lester beck saw this unfortunately lester is no longer alive but it might be something i'm going to reach out to uh i think it's the university of wisc of washington that has lester beck's archive and see if there's any notes about this because it's fascinating um anyways uh some of you have noticed uh thanks to uh youtube um that i'm not gonna be here for the next seven shows uh i'm going to be traveling and my assistants and folks will still be here at the archive and i pre recorded some shows of some new material that you'll be watching on the road and i'll be trying to tune in in the comments um during this but we'll see what my internet is like in different places but um celebrating my wedding anniversary on friday 10 years 10 years all right uh this next film is from the 70s and it's how to squeeze more miles from your car there was a gash crisis and gas prices were very high and also there was an embargo and so we didn't have as much gas and here are helpful hints on how to squeeze more mileage out of your car which was getting i don't know 12 15 miles a gallon and this is made by walter j klein who was a north carolina-based filmmaker who was had an advertising agency and like most films this will probably have a sponsor uh he got the sponsor to pay for it to to make the film produce it then he would distribute it to tv shows for free or to tv stations for free into schools um and the sponsor would then say that well this is advertising for us so here's how to squeeze more miles from your car enjoy [Music] foreign [Music] gasoline prices have risen over 150 percent in the last decade the fad of watching fuel consumption has become a necessity few people can afford the luxury of the monster gas golfer the inefficient engines or haphazard automobile maintenance like their household finances drivers want to learn to budget gas to squeeze as much distance as possible from each expensive tank full this film isn't full of friendly advice or handy tips but rather presents hard facts on how to squeeze more miles from your car [Music] it's to the advantage of both industry and the public to work together in solving the common problems of an energy shortage mr hodge ms davis and casey tross are going to illustrate ways in which you can cut fuel consumption in your car now these points require no special knowledge of engines but do require a conscientious effort by you the car owner [Music] when i start my car there's no real reason to race it that just allows gasoline to pour through the carburetor and gives you nothing in return idling your car in cold weather gives you the same result nothing a 10-minute warm-up can waste as much as a pint of gas driving at moderate speed for the first couple of miles after starting can actually warm your engine faster [Music] just because you're driving doesn't mean you should automatically apply heavy pressure to the gas pedal this too pumps excessive gasoline into the carburetor steady does it accelerate smoothly as if you have an egg between your foot in the gas pedal minimizing pumping helps the engine to utilize all the power possible from the gasoline fed into it personally i prefer a stick or manual shift in the cars i drive run through the lower gears quickly but gently then build up speed in high gear the lower gears cause the engine to run faster use more fuel save more gas by downshifting when the engine feels as though it's lugging or operating too slowly in high gear if your car is an automatic apply just enough pressure to start the car rolling then ease up a little on the pedal so that the transmission will shift into high as quickly as possible to me there's nothing more annoying than the jackrabbit hotshot who thinks he can save time and leave others behind by roaring off at the change of a light flooring the gas pedal for a fast start is the greatest gasoline waster of all gasoline pours through the carburetor rubber burns off the rear tires when you scratch off dollar bills fly out your window [Music] more speed more gas the faster you drive the more gas your engine will drink if you want to put around the highway at 70 miles an hour just remember you could be going the same distance with dramatically less gas at a speed of 50 miles per hour and 50 is within the legal highway speed limits for me city traffic is nothing less than frustrating lights at every other block mean a lot of stop and go driving anticipate your stops ahead of time and let up on the accelerator by slowing down in advance you can come to a red light just as it turns green this helps to avoid that stop and go driving that spans excessive fuel along with a lot of my friends i bought that old story of saving gas by coasting downhill in neutral not too good first your car becomes difficult to control in neutral second coasting builds up abnormal pressures in the hydraulic system of the automatic transmission causing serious damage third coasting is illegal in some states so if you decide to save gas by coasting you could lose control of your car ruin the transmission and then get a ticket there are better things to do in life don't try to pass just in the nick of time when there's a clear oncoming lane you can pass easily safely with a little extra push on the pedal by flooring the pedal in quick passing you not only open the throttle all the way but you downshift the automatic transmission this revs the engine and literally pours gasoline through the carburetor gasoline consumption really jumps as you pass a half a dozen cars in an hour the more you carry the more gasoline is required to move it so unload your car of unnecessary items that you simply haven't bothered to remove always try to keep your fuel tank at least half full water can get into the gas caused by condensation in a near empty tank this makes an engine miss or falter sometimes the car will completely stall water itself doesn't waste gas but poor engine performance because of water does my final suggestion saves the most gas of all i found it a little ridiculous going to the same school to the same store to the same games with the same friends but in different cars now i save both gas and bread with a little advantage [Music] casey showed us several good ways to get more miles per gallon don't warm up your car by idling accelerate smoothly when starting and passing shift quickly into high gear avoid jackrabbit starts keep your speed at about 50 on the highway don't coast in neutral keep your tank at least half full and carpool taking care of your car isn't simply a wash and a wax the inside of your engine needs maintenance as well as the outside of your car and an engine that performs properly saves plenty of gas i make it a point always to check the air in my tires at regular intervals under inflated tires can waste as much as 5 of the gasoline you buy not to mention the wear on the tires always check the air pressure when the tires are cold misaligned front wheels can cause a drag by sliding sideways as the car moves straight ahead you lose gas by this drag a weak battery is a primary waster of fuel with a tired battery there isn't power to start the engine quickly therefore you have to crank longer maybe even flood the engine once you're started the extra load put on the engine to charge the weak battery rob some of your horsepower more gas is being used to drive the alternator instead of the car so keep your battery charged your cooling system must work correctly to assure a proper operating temperature for the engine keep the cooling system clean and maintain some type of year-round coolant at the level specified in your owner's manual the pressure cap on the radiator should have a good seal to prevent the coolant from boiling over spark plugs are the most important item in a tune-up and the one item that most affects engine performance new properly maintained plugs can result in a seven to ten percent gain in engine performance in gasoline economy one bad plug can waste as much as one gallon of fuel for each fifteen you buy distributor points should be replaced along with the condenser every ten to twelve thousand miles your carburetor mixes fuel and air if yours is off balance you lose engine performance which means wasted gas [Music] a dirty air filter element inside the carburetor air cleaner can cause this off balance replace the filter every ten to twelve thousand miles or in especially dusty areas every five to six thousand miles a dirty air filter can cut gas mileage as much as ten percent have your servicemen check the small fuel filter on the inlet fuel line between the fuel pump and the carburetor every twelve thousand miles something could obstruct the flow of gas at that point a clean carburetor that doesn't stick in the various linkages furthers gas economy linkages that don't return to their normal positions will waste gasoline by causing the engine to idle too fast or operate on a fuel and air mixture that's much too rich the pcv valve in the positive crank case ventilation system should be replaced at each tune-up period it also should be cleaned at each oil change [Music] heat from the engine exhaust can cause the valve shaft to rust and become inoperative the manifold heat control valve should be freed at every tune-up and clean until it moves easily through its full swing [Music] i like all the little extras i ordered with my car air conditioning automatic transmission but i also realized that each time i added an extra i detracted a little from my mileage potential an average of nine percent of the gas dollar goes towards operating the air conditioner use it wisely don't use it all the time especially when a window or a vent will do just as well the automatic transmission takes about six percent of the horsepower from your engine but when it malfunctions the automatic transmission can waste as much as 30 percent of motor power a fluid change a new filter and a band adjustment at recommended intervals will keep your transmission operating smoothly driving a car in need of a tune-up can cost you 20 percent of the miles per gallon you could get tune your car every 10 to 12 000 miles for peak efficiency and maximum gas mileage [Music] a lot of my friends find it easier to simply say fill er up than to specify the correct fuel for their cars high compression high performance engines require premium grade gasoline most compact and imported cars can be operated on leaded regular grade gasoline for maximum economy most 1975 and later modeled cars require unleaded regular grade gasoline for the catalytic converter to function properly using a fuel with a lower octane quality than your car needs waste fuel by not giving an engine all the power it requires [Music] my automobile dealer helped me plan a record of how many miles per gallon i'd be getting by keeping track i can tell if i need car maintenance or my driving needs correction i simply record the mileage on the odometer each time i fill the tank and how many gallons i needed then i divide the miles traveled since the last fill up by the number of gallons to refill the tank voila my answer comes out on the actual miles per gallon short trips result in fewer miles per gallon because i make more stops and starts a steady speed for a long time like highway driving will give me more miles per gallon by taking a little extra time to learn better driving habits basic car maintenance and knowing which fuel your car prefers there's no trick to getting more miles per gallon and if you can't remember all the tips in this film just write this address or contact your local was looking for the walter j klein book which is called the sponsored film where he basically details what he does which is they come up with an idea for something that they think is timely and would be interesting for a tv station to broadcast um then they propose to a sponsor that they think is tangentially related and say here's the budget and this is how much it costs to make and and all that stuff and then um if they get uh sign on by the the sponsor then they make the film and then they distribute it and then i think the educational film market which they would sell films to uh schools uh along with sometimes giving them for free um you know that would make the money too so yeah pretty uh pretty fascinating all right so behind me besides the awesome av geeks neon is uh my telecini which i have set up and we're gonna watch a film and it is a religious film that i think i got from the methodist library uh the uh north carolina methodist headquarters were getting rid of their films and um my stepfather is a methodist minister and so he reached out somehow they got in touch with me through him so anyways this one's called our father enjoy [Music] would you all please stand and say the first two words of the lord's prayer thank you please be seated charlie there's been something that's bothered me for the past couple of weeks i want to talk to you about it yeah okay herb as a matter of fact there's something i want to get off my chest too well good what was it no go ahead you go ahead oh well i i suppose you can guess what it is now no i can't sam yeah well i figured it was well that's what i asked you yeah i know but well i wasn't sure as a matter of fact uh that's what i wanted to talk to you about too i feel kind of guilty i guess that's about the size of it me too you know everybody in this town thinks you're the only brother i got nobody even knows sam is our brother yeah i know i guess the reason why is because all the time we were growing up he was inside studying while we were outside playing baseball and football actually you're the kind of guy i always got along with anyway our interests were the same of course the truth of the matter is the reason he's now gotten a nobel prize is because he was in there studying all the time yeah i know what you're gonna say you're gonna say now that he's got the nobel prize we're telling everybody that he's our brother that's right i go around saying of course you know sam is my brother as if it was some big deal you know as if i always had him as my brother well the truth of the matter is he always has been our brother i know that but i never accepted him as my brother until he got this honor i guess now i'm choosing him to be my brother i guess that's why i feel guilty now that i've decided i want him to be my brother so he is my brother hi charlie you look worried yeah i am that's why i waited up for you mom and dad went to bed what's the matter oh don't tell me tom now right again i tell you i can't take it what happened i mean more than usual well nothing more than usual i just can't stand it you know it's got to the point i can't even look at him anymore yeah i know it's pretty bad fact is that's why i stay out so much i just don't want to be around him you know he's 31 years old and the doctors say he's never going to be more than three or four years old mentally and he just lies around on the floor in the living room i mean you know it's just getting to me yeah i know i've gotten to where i can't even bring any friends home mom and dad treat him like he's a human being you know normal i don't mean normal we know he's not normal they want us to treat them like he's a person well we've got to do something like what well we could put him in an institution oh we couldn't do that yeah i know i know we couldn't afford it besides mom and dad wouldn't go for it okay okay listen there is something we could do we could put him up in that empty room up in the attic and and he'd never know the difference just feed him up there leave him up there get him out of our sight charlie you know dad's not going to go for that come on you know what he's always saying remember son he's your brother well in a strict sense of course he is our brother stop right there charlie wait a minute he may be your brother that's up to you but he's not my brother i don't choose to have him as my brother he's not my brother now that's a fact well i agree i agree listen i don't look upon him as a brother any more than you do but what are we gonna do i don't know i don't know but one thing's for sure you're the only brother i've got i don't care what mom and dad say you and i are the only brothers we've got hi charlie how's betty feeling oh fine fine i guess i'm more excited than she is you know first baby wow yeah where is she now betty oh she's lying down you know she may have the baby this next weekend if everything stays on schedule as they say yeah well charlie there's something i got to tell you shoot well it's pretty wild but what's the matter what's up well um chilling i guess there's no way to say except straight out you're not my only brother what what do you mean i'm not your only brother just that we got another brother you're putting me on no i swear believe me this is no joke let me explain something dad told me shortly before he died he made me promise to tell you before well before you had any kids well go on go on well here's what happened mom and dad were married and they had a baby that was you right wrong in the name of will you get it out take it easy now when i tell you tell me the baby was black what mom and dad's first baby was black you mean it a negro i mean black man b-l-a-c-k black i don't believe it it's true charlie believe it when dad saw it he told me he got right up and walked right out of the hospital packed his clothes and went over to his mom and dad's me too holy toledo when he got there his dad told him listen son you get your bags and you go back to your house because it's in our bloodline that this thing's possible we've known it was possible for a long time we weren't sure exactly where but we've known it's been possible we didn't think it was ever going to happen but it's happened oh man needless to say dad was sort of taken aback he was very ashamed of himself so he he went back home unpacked his clothes he went back to the hospital and they put the child out for adoption god got a good home after that they had me and you i guess you realize now why i'm telling you this he didn't want me if it happened to me to walk out like he didn't he doesn't want you if it happens to you to walk out like he did that's one heck of a thing to tell somebody is just going to have their first baby i know chad nothing else i could do i had to tell you i i appreciate you telling me i wouldn't want to make the same mistake dad almost now wait a minute let me get one thing straight you mean to say i could walk down the street here and meet a negro and he could be my brother yeah no no i just don't buy that what do you mean you don't buy it it's a fact no it's not a fact i don't choose it i won't have it well charlie it's not really your choice i mean if daddy's your daddy then he has every right to tell you who your brothers are that's what i'm telling you no i won't accept that i'm not gonna have any negro as a part of my life i don't want him as my brother charlie you can decide whether you want dad as your daddy now that you can make a decision on if you don't want him to be your dad that's your business but if you call him father he's your dad then he has every right to tell you that that man's your brother you don't know it but he's your brother would you all please stand and say the first two words i'm scratching my head here so thankfully there's uh program notes um it's uh this won an award a red ribbon award in 1971 at the american film festival in new york uh part of the educational film library association ten dollars um and let's see suggested use okay so uh this is a film on acceptance it raises the fundamental questions having acknowledged god as our father do we have the right to choose our brothers and three vignettes two brothers charlie and herb discuss an absent brother each vignette is a parable the first the brother about whom they uh now want to boast the second a brother who they want to ignore and third a brother that charlie wants to deny where to use in regular sunday uh morning worship service or to follow the showing with one reactions and dialogue from the congregation two a brief meditation on the theme of the film three congregations singing of malats the lord's prayer or for a brief pair prayer and benediction youth responds a directness to directness and honesty our father of our father it opens up many areas of meaningful discussion and action finally the small encounter and fellowship groups find much in our father concerning relationships and so here are some questions for discussion what are the characteristics of a person which uh caused me to want to claim him as my brother are these present only in my racial ethnic or religious group uh what is my reaction when i encounter someone who is different than i physically socially spiritually what actions or teachings of jesus relate to this uh how big is my circle of love and acceptance as big as affirmation of our father how may i extend my circle of concern what may i do today this week to express my love for others and then it says don't get hung up on the question of genetics as expressed in the third sequence whether or not the thing is possible is hotly debated but here is a parable if the real question is if i call god father do i have the right to choose my brothers so um yeah such an odd you know this is why i collect uh religious films is that they you know they're the religious market is um was as well not as big as the school market but it was a big market and so there was a lot of these types of films out there uh and so some of these are real head scratchers so there you go speaking of belonging in a group here's belonging to a group enjoy [Music] here in fairview people are about as sociable as anywhere else most of us feel the need to live as members of a social group first it's the family group that fills this need later we make acquaintances and form circles of friends [Music] to have the respect and affection of other people is one of the most important things in life yet we don't think about it much except when we're outside of the group wanting to belong [Music] this is something ruth and charlie thompson and their parents had to think about when they came here to fairview a year ago all strangers in the strange community something the oster family had to think about too young willie and hilda and john and you can see they belong to the group now but a lot had to happen before they found their places in our community it all began that day a year ago when the officers first arrived in fairview oddly enough the thompsons came to town on the same train they were all strangers then strangers to each other strangers to the rest of us in town though they didn't know it then the two families faced together the problem of establishing themselves in a new community of finding their places in the group [Music] to the thompsons fairview was much like their old hometown but to the oscars this was all entirely new they were fresh from across the ocean from a land where the way of life was very different and they felt alone now like any community we have all kinds of people here in fairview we have our upper crust and our rank and file our snobs and our friendly sociable people no sir the people around here don't care where you come from it's what you are that counts you'll find we have a fine bunch of people running this town with so many outsiders coming to fairview these days our old families are becoming completely lost i say if you hold your job and pay your bills you're just as big as anyone else in town but in spite of their differences fairview people pretty well agree on one thing that newcomers have to show what they can do before they are accepted in any of the town's social groups the youngsters came up against this problem right away on their first day to go to their new school to ruth and charlie thompson it was just a problem of getting acquainted and then choosing and forming a new circle of friends [Music] but to willie oster it was a far more serious matter he was entering a world where everything was strange and everyone might be hostile he had their new ways of doing things to overcome the differences in attitudes language and customs that set him apart from the group my first pick jim tony charlie ed jim dave bill dick al melvin sandy eric sam charlie john i guess i gotta take you willie found it wasn't easy to gain acceptance in the group but he was determined to try [Music] oh we have so much fun in our girl scout true fruit you really ought to join especially since you've already got some of your badges you really ought to come a long route it's a good bunch and i'm sure you'll fit in perfectly i'd love to the meetings tonight thank you bye bye bye say ruth did you get the history assignment for tonight yeah what's that playing with doll this this i whittled yeah what is it it is one of the little people my father told me about the forest elves of the old country forest dell yes my father says people used to believe in them he taught me how to carve one gee willy you made this with only a jackknife you teach me how to whittle like this and i'll make a first baseman out of you okay from then on willy made friends once he had shown what he could do he was accepted in the group but charlie thompson was having a problem of his own it wasn't easy for him to meet new people on their own ground especially since he expected them to make all the advances it seemed to him that all the other fellows were only interested in football and other sports and he wasn't much of a player when the fellows made fun of him over this he was hurt and it took a family conference to set him straight and the leader is mrs jenkinson down the street she seems awfully nice and they go on hikes and yeah yeah yeah can't you pipe down charles that isn't a very nice way to talk but you have been chattering ruth something wrong son no nothing wrong ruth you'd better start your homework well charles come on out with it well i don't suppose it really matters much it's just that the fellas around here they don't seem too friendly not friendly are you sure they are the ones who are standoffish and not you after all you're the new one yes mary but maybe he's right you know kids can be pretty rough on a newcomer sometimes charlie what makes you think they're not friendly well gee what do you have to do i try and be nice with them but they're not having any and just because they don't play football they act like i was poisoned football aren't there any other activities around school perhaps it's up to you to break the ice isn't there a camera club you used to belong to one well i guess maybe there is well if i were you i wouldn't let them get me down why not get in the glee club or the dramatic club and you like history isn't there some sort of a group there sure there's lots of clubs and activities at school i guess i could get into one of them then why don't you charles well i guess it is up to me to break the ice from then on charlie did better he discovered the common interests he shared with others and threw himself into their activities this gave them a chance to learn to like him and to respect him for the things he could do well [Music] at the plant where john oster and arthur thompson went to work together they were up against the same problem arthur had to establish himself as the new assistant production manager but he got off on the wrong foot right at the start [Music] well i'll be gonna dock us for quitting early to go to the basketball game who does he think he is we've been doing this for years nobody works when a high school's in a basketball tournament see arthur had ignored a custom of the group and like all groups they resented this from a newcomer did you put this up why yes of course you should have checked with me the men have been doing this for years well it just didn't seem right to me well maybe not but we have a good hard-working bunch here and one reason is that we let up on them once in a while and let them see their kids play basketball well shouldn't that be on their own time or maybe so but it's been going on for so long that the men think it's their right all you've done is to get them mad at you you better get out of it or you're going to have a hard time arthur realized he wouldn't get along with anyone in the plant unless he admitted his mistake [Music] backing down huh well anyway he's willing to admit he was wrong arthur's next problem was to show the men in the plant that he knew how to handle his job you wanted to see me mr thompson yes i've been looking over these blueprints for that turbine job and i'm afraid there's a miscalculation in them mm-hmm yeah this dimension won't do for a taper like that see that was easy i wish i'd learned to use one of those things all right oh this handy little gadget the the slipstick well i can show you how to use it in no time at all from that time on arthur was accepted as a member of the group but john oster remained an outsider he kept himself apart out of shyness over his ignorance of the ways of people in this new world many of the other men at the plant regarded him with the suspicion people often feel towards someone strange and alien but a few tried to get acquainted you going the basketball game master basketball game i i do not know about it what you don't know about the game the big game i'm sorry i do not know what's the matter with that guy who let him into this place anyway that's all right he's a good machinist he knows his job and he does it yeah so what you can't even talk english good he's smart he'll learn say listen why don't we get him to go bowling with us thursday nights go bowling with us nothing doing i don't want to get mixed up of that kind what have you got against him hank after all your old man wasn't born this country either so what if you want a square head like oscar in a bowling club you can count me out all right i just thought we might get acquainted after all we gotta work with them fetterfane lunotan weather vane verfein how can i do it hilda in the city when we were living with other people from the old country it did not matter here i am different how do you do it so well i listen to willy oh he tells me such things and i hear the way he says them now you try it again there's the fame uh it's no use hilda i i cannot wrap my tongue around this language not really matter job hilda was right the language really didn't matter except that it emphasized the differences that made hilda and john outsiders in fairview to some of us the oscars alien background was an insurmountable barrier to are accepting them into the group but to mary thompson who knew what it was like to be a stranger this was a challenge to our fairness and democracy i'd like to place hilda oster for membership in the guild well madame chairman douglas mrs oster is a very fine woman in her place but what do we know of her background jane i think you're being silly are we interested in what her background is or and what she herself is really like this is the oldest church in fairview some of the finest and oldest families in town belong to this church now after all jane when mrs oster paid us a visit we got along beautifully she's a sweet woman and has a wonderful disposition and after all don't we believe that everyone is entitled to an equal chance i think we could all agree on that how do the rest of us feel hilda did join the guild and soon she and john were members of the group [Music] hilda i can't tell you how pleased everyone is that you're in the guild even if i do have a cake in the contest i know you're going to win oh thank you everybody's been so nice to us since we came to fairview seems like you've lived here all your life thank you you'll both be happy to know our minister has consented to judge the cake i shouldn't like to be an issue oh i just said that i'd see that they were judged but i have an infallible jury please uh may i have your attention we have come to the finals and i've been to use the vernacular put on the spot but i think i found a way out of it here are the best judges i'm sure they know far more about these matters than do i or anyone here you can guess which cake is going to win the best one of course [Music] but this is the story of two families finding their places in a strange community learning what it takes to become members of a new social group it's also the story of every one of us in all our relationships with families and friends acquaintances and working associates every one of us have to learn the ways to live work and play together the ways to acquire that feeling of belonging to the group that's so essential to everyone's happiness [Music] last two films were loosely related in a way um but uh maybe not so triggering okay so i got another film set up on the on the tila city um and uh this one the title is clipped but um this might haunt you um and i didn't change the name of the film let me do that and while i'm doing that uh this is old woman in the shoe who lived in a shoe um anyways uh like i said i'm gonna be gone uh thursday friday and then next week um but i will be uh tuning in if i can if i'm if i have access to the internet wherever i am around lunchtime i've set it up to premiere um twitch unfortunately probably won't be broadcasting to you although i'll see what i can do um anybody watching the monoplex probably not anybody watching twitter i don't know we'll see anyhow if you the shoe missing the title enjoy she doesn't know what to do her trouble is that she doesn't know how many children she has are there five four ten poor old woman she doesn't know how many bowls to take out for the children's dinner will this be enough maybe one more or is that too many the old woman can't be sure because she doesn't know how many children she has let's help the old woman with her problems she knows her numbers but she doesn't know how to use them for counting things so they won't help her now is there another way to find out how many bowls she needs perhaps the boys can show us away right now they want to find out if there are enough of these toy horses for each boy to find out they'll match one horse with each boy this horse with this boy this horse with this boy and these horses with these boys so by matching they know that there is one horse for each boy the girls find out if they have enough of the things they need in the same way will there be enough of these bonnets for each of the dolls the girls will find out by matching one bonnet for this doll one for this doll one for this doll and the last bonnet for this doll but look there are still some dolls without bonnet one of the girls though has something else they can use ribbons they'll find out if they have enough ribbons for the rest of the dolls by matching can the old woman use matching to find out how many bullets she'll need she'll have to take the bowls outside to match them with the children well perhaps it isn't so easy she isn't giving up is she perhaps there's another way can you think what the old woman is going to do let's see she's asking her children for something she's getting a stone from this boy one stone from this girl and one stone from each of the other children now she has one stone for each child can she use the stones to find out how many bowls she needs yes all she has to do is place the stones on the counter get out the bowls again and match one bowl with each stone this gives her one bowl for each child the old woman has solved her problem even though she did not bring the bowls and children together she matched them by using stones can you see that the old woman used stones almost the same way we use numbers for counting let's give the old woman some numerals she can use them to find out how many bowls she has by matching them with the bowls just as she did with the stones but the numerals must be in order so with this bowl she'll match the numeral one with this bowl two then three four five six seven eight nine nine is the last numeral matched so we say that there are nine bowls in all this is how we use numbers for counting things the old woman knows now that she has nine children since there is one bowl for each child she will also need nine slices of bread let's count the bread wither we'll match one numeral with each slice one two three four five six seven eight nine nine pieces of bread counting is easy for the old woman now and she has finished just in time here come the children ready for dinner first they'll hang up their coats but look some of the hooks are too high and some of the hooks are too low the old woman doesn't know what to do perhaps we can help her again let's see first we'll move the children and coats away from the hooks now we can see what's wrong the lowest hook is at this end as we move toward the other end the hooks get higher we say the hooks are in order by height but the children are not in order by height well we can change that that's better now the taller children have hooks they can reach and the shorter children have hooks they can reach let's number each hook in order by remembering their numbers the children can always line up in order from lowest to highest now it's time to eat let's count the bowls on each platter on this platter there are one two three three bowls platter there are also three bowls and on this platter three more if we want to say how many bowls there are altogether we can say there are three with three with three of course we can also say that there are nine so nine is the same as three with three with three we also know that there are nine children let's see how many girls boys there are one two three four four girls and there are one two three four five five boys so four with five is also the same as nine we have different names for the same amount numbers can be used in many different ways we've seen how numbers have helped the old woman [Music] yes there was an old woman who lived in a shoe she had so many children she didn't know what to do but now each one has and tonight they'll sleep soundly each one in his bed [Music] it wasn't about an old lady who lived in a shoe that was just about an old lady who has problems some
