so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so quoted some shelly there um yeah that was uh less science and more just kind of um let's meditate on clouds um i'm skipped alzheimer welcome to the avgeek's lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and that was one made by the usda probably in the late 20s early 30s um i didn't see a year on it so i'm not 100 sure when that was but i know that they made other films around that time period originally on 35 and then this was shrunk down to 16 um in the mid-20s so that it could be distributed um so it's uh lunchtime and so my wife actually packed me a bento box uh [Music] and let's show you what i got real quick um hopefully you can eat along i know some of you are in different time zones so i got apples i got a little bit of salad got some mixed nuts healthy part of the the experience let's see what else we got here and then another layer this is not japanese even though it's in a bento box which is japanese so i got little um lunch meat rolls the whole grain tortilla and then oh pickles i love it all right that's what i'm having for lunch what are you having for lunch let me know uh in the meantime let's learn about iceland enjoy among the most unique of the more remote kingdoms of the earth is that little island on the fringe of the arctic circle known as iceland its first colonists were wise and highborn chieftains or vikings who brought from their mother country norway and already advanced civilization over a thousand years ago the entire population of iceland today hardly exceeds 100 000 people more than a fifth of whom live in reykjavik the capital and largest city [Music] although it may be dull and drab in its atmospheric and architectural character brachiovek is praiseworthy monument to the courage and endurance of a people who for 11 centuries have battled unflinchingly with nature's most devastating plagues earthquakes and icy blast and although practically isolated from all other nations have managed to develop and maintain a civilization that has seldom been excelled in this dreary land of brief summers and long winters where green grass flowers trees and even sunshine are the rarest of luxuries the descendants of the vikings have built their homes and reared their children historically teaching them to carry on the great fight with nature which is the unfortunate heritage of every child born in this grim land of the vikings most of the women still appear in the old icelandic costume hand it down from mother to daughter [Music] they speak a language which has changed very little since the ninth century and their greatest boast is that there is no illiteracy in iceland they are exhaustive readers on all subjects their collection of books on chat alone being one of the largest in the world it is only natural that a game like this would be popular in a country with long cold winter months where man in the absence of nature's benevolence must create his own diversions verily nature has not been kind to iceland with its vast and desolate volcanic plains upon which the sun seldom shines and little or nothing may be cultivated as a matter of fact only seven percent of iceland's soil is capable of cultivation and most of this is devoted to the growing of hay for the little icelandic ponies until the advent of automobiles these ponies were the only means of transportation and consequently their tiny tracks have been perpetuated in every nook and cranny of the land having directly descended from the ponies that were brought to iceland by the vikings they may share with their owners the distinction of an unbroken lineage dating back to the 9th century this old custom of tying the bridle of one to the tail of the other probably originated from the absence of trees to which they might ordinarily be tethered at the present time it is estimated that there are about fifty thousand ponies in iceland [Music] the natural hot water which is constantly flowing from thousands of boiling springs is the one redeeming feature that nature has bestowed upon this coal and barren country and it is solving many problems for the people not the least of which is the municipal laundry this boiling water has also been piped into homes for heating washing and cooking purposes and experiments are now being made and piping it through the soil and greenhouses in order that fruit and vegetables might be grown thereby solving one of iceland's greatest problems the ceaseless activity of these hot springs as well as frequent volcanic eruptions are grim reminders that hit forfeit were not for fish there would be no logical reason for human life in this weird country the waters directly surrounding the coast of iceland abound in marine growth that attracts fish in overwhelming numbers and consequently the destiny of every icelander from childhood to old age is interwoven with the fishing industry although many species of fish are caught the bulk of the catch is usually cod fish after a very thorough cleaning and salting process the fish are stacked in piles and covered with canvas until they are thoroughly dried thousands of tons of salted fish are shipped annually to the countries of southern europe of which spain is the chief customer until recently iceland had a very strict prohibition law which was enforced without difficulty until spain threatened to withdraw its orders for fish if iceland did not renew its orders for spanish wine and as a result the law of prohibition succumbed to the law of reciprocity the icelanders by nature however are not an alcoholic people [Music] although their environment may be stark and colorless they accept it as a natural condition which does not seem to affect their peace or contentment [Music] their hymn of prosperity is the monotonous flip-flop of codfish tails intermingle with the continuous swish of rock salt and out of this drab industry iceland has evolved a standard of living that provides reasonable wages employment for everybody and a system of law and order which requires neither a police force nor a jail the national sport called lima is a form of wrestling that originated in iceland over a thousand years ago and is practiced today with much formality although iceland is still under the dominion of their own flag and it aspires to be an independent republic again even as it was in the 11th century when the vikings assembled on their fields of sport to witness their glimmer exactly as we see it here to touch the ground with any part of the body except the feet or the hands constitute to fall when both contestants fall together it is considered a draw [Music] for some strange reason the icelanders kept this phase of their physical development a secret from the outside world until 1870 and although it has now been devoted to foreigners it still confines itself exclusively to iceland thereby making its champions the champions of the world somehow these fine physical specimens of manhood are reminiscent of the ancient vikings who sighted the shores of america long before christopher columbus was born and handed down to their descendants a capacity for friends and endurance that baffles nature herself and it is with this thought that we say farewell to iceland the land of the vikings [Music] a travel talk um some sort of travelogue a short subject that was probably shown in theaters um yeah that uh that sport at the end but they're picking each other up by the straps around their butts uh fascinating i feel like i've transferred some other footage from that um of that sport um and it's mostly in iceland um regrettably uh because of covid i was not able to go to iceland uh in 2020 and help them with their home movie day i was really wanting to do that um i had made this thing called a movie day bingo and they had translated it into icelandic and i wanted to be there to kind of see it go through and so they did do it they did kind of a small um pandemic home movie day and one day i hope to be able to go there because it was going to be all expenses paid so that would have been awesome anyways uh uh what do we got oh not like and i have multiple copies of it so i'm not 100 um but it's still great i still like it good music i love 70s new york city gritty and yet people are there living making the best of it um pretty great um i would love to be there at some point visit visit 70s new york i visited 80s in new york not so gritty it's still gritty um but uh i also want to be a secretary so let's learn about that enjoy [Music] i really don't think i'll ever learn [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] hello hello mary you're right on time i was glad to get your notes my program for example has been bothering me what have you planned to take well you know how much i like my work in the commercial department i thought perhaps i should cancel his team physics i don't really need them and take office practice and advance dictation i want to become a stenographer yes that sounds like a reasonable plan but what do you think stenographers do to earn a living have you actually visualized yourself in a secretarial position what do you think the work would be like yes i think i have an idea if i were doing a stenographic wasn't in office i imagine i would [Music] and that's my idea of stenographic work mr adams yes that's clerical work but aren't there other types of clerical work that require more training more skill and further education perhaps in your case june it might be well to think beyond mere routine typing and filing and shorthand but we don't have such courses at westport high school where could i get training for other kinds of clerical work and what other types of office jobs are there well suppose we see if we can find the answers to your questions let's see if this harrison of the commercial department can help us get the information we need all right mrs harrison you're going into the city this afternoon aren't you yes i am mr adam if june can be excused from classes i wonder if you take her to medicine's office so that she can see some examples of really advanced clerical work well i think so miss harrison do you suppose i could talk with one of the private secretaries who works for a top executive i'm sure that can be arranged with an acquaintance of mine who is a secretary of her june i'm leaving on the 140 bus can you be ready then yes i can and thank you surely [Music] good morning mrs interpreted good morning message incorporated good morning mr benson yes he is this morning there you are good morning mission incorporated yeah uh i would like to talk to him mr peterson good morning messenger incorporated good morning lessons incorporated just hold alignment please does anyone help you with yes i have a telephone appointment with miss lee would you please tell her that miss harrison and miss woods are here this is expecting you to arrive at your first journey left down the corridor thank you good morning mentions incorporated specifically the lionesses because this affair has so many ramifications mr messen thinks it would be easier for everyone if the meeting could be arranged oh hello miss harrison come on in what's up miss lee and this is the young lady yes this is june woods who might talk to you about this morning how do you do are you doing i'd like to have you see how a real business office operates i'm very glad to help her in fact i've arranged so that we can spend the next hour together won't you sit down please well thank you but i have some important calls to make you'll have to excuse me this time i'll be back in about an hour all right miss harrison goodbye goodbye goodbye i'd like to have you see the routine clerical department first many of our girls begin their work with us in the following department after graduating from high school miss lee is explaining to june the system employed in the filing department it is necessary to have supervisors to direct the girls as some of the work is not so simple although all of the girls are high school graduates and have had some training in accuracy and speed employers depend greatly on the recommendations of counselors and teachers as the applicant school grades are also very important in obtaining a job in the stenographic department some of the girls are transcribing shorthand notes and others are doing routine typing such as form letters that can't be duplicated making copies when several carbons are needed and cutting stencils or duplicating machines the average typist has had a year or two of training beyond high school and many of them are from junior college commercial departments 70 words a minute is considered good typing speed however it is not uncommon to find typists who can do 90 words per minute or more depending upon the ability and alertness of the these girls will become proficient stenographers and gain promotion to different departments as their experience becomes greater a duplicating department is a busy one this machine is electrically operated and used for short runs reproduction of drawing grass and the employee's weekly newspaper also manually operated machines of the same type are used for work requiring hundreds of cups this duplicating machine is used training for the operation of these machines is obtained either at special commercial schools at night or gained while employed in this department it is not uncommon to find men doing this type of work however girls are preferred on routine jobs which require speed and accuracy there is still a bookkeeping department but it looks as though the girls are in a hurry to get back to miss lee's office and i'm still amazed that your mom's ability a girl needs to do many of these jobs put it down shall we thank you what about your own job miss lee you're an office manager as well as head secretary aren't you yes one of my most important duties is to make appointments with the president takes judgment to tell which caller should be given 15 minutes and which one should take his problems to someone else in the firm sometimes it takes every ounce of tact i can muster keep everyone contented another important job of mine is to read and abstract materials from contracts and papers so that the president can tell in a moment whether he needs to do any more research before making a business decision my college training has proved its importance in this work are you planning to go to college oh i thought about it dad said he would help me but i haven't made up my mind yet i'm going to talk to mr adams about it tomorrow excuse me miss lee yes mr melvin right away well i see that you're busy and i can't take any more of your time thank you very much and goodbye goodbye and good luck well june did you have a good time on your trip to medicine's office yesterday yes i did but mr adams do you think i could make a go of it well why do you ask that well i talked to miss lee who has just the kind of a job i like someday and she said that it was necessary to have college training for that job so i've talked to mother and father they think that i might go to college do you think i should before i answer your questions suppose we take a look at your experience and record then you and i can think through to an answer your high score on the scholastic aptitude test indicates that you can do good work in power moreover your high score on the clerical aptitude test indicates that you can become a good secretary mr adams does that definitely mean that i'm capable of doing good work in college yes june you have the fundamental ability to do good work in college moreover your fine record in school shows that you use that ability efficiently i think that i'm genuinely interested in secretarial work and i'm more confident of my interest after talking to miss lee but some of my classmates tell me that their vocational interests have changed i'm afraid that i may change too your interests may change june as you grow more mature and acquire new experiences but on our test of vocational interests your likes and dislikes are similar to those of successful women in secretarial occupations our choice of secretarial work is a good one and that you will most likely continue to be interested however you must remember that you will have to start at the bottom and work up to that position you realize from your visit with miss lee of course that there are many many ways in which you can use your interest in commercial occupation later on you may even wish to shift to some other line of work you should not worry about the narrow specific type of job until you've had two three years more for the training but mr adams miss lee stressed when i saw for myself the carlson officers work closely with each other and must be well liked do you think that i have the personality for that type of work suppose you tell me what things you have done with other people what activities have you been participating in in school i've been in so many things i'm secretary of the freshman class i was the president of my campfire group last month i read and prepared an article on the american indian before the school historical society for the past two years i've been social chairman in my church summer i was cabin leader at camp mother says i'm in too many things well that would certainly seem to indicate the right kind of personality for getting along with persons of your own age have you worked with older persons you remember that i did some work in a law office last summer the people there liked my work and were very pleasant and nice to me but i don't know whether that means but oh yes it does that's fine i can't predict with certainty just how your personality may develop but what you say points to the likelihood that you will continue to be sociable and cooperative there's one other question that i wanted to ask you what about financial support will you be able to get further training i was talking with father last night and he said that he would be able to pay for most of my expenses i may have to earn some money myself a good many college students do work for pay although it is desirable to spend most of your time in studying at least for the first year when you are ready to go to college i will be glad to write your counselors and ask them to help you find work where had you planned on going to college i don't know i suppose to the state university since it's so close and i can live at home do you see anything wrong with my plan no you can get good training there miss harrison thinks very highly of their courses in secretarial training i have the bulletin describing their business courses or take them and study them it's a good idea to begin planning now even a year ahead of time but mr adams i want to do something now well but there are many things that you can do right now june i suggest that you talk these matters over with your parents and if they would like to see me i'll be very glad to talk with them well that'll be fine tomorrow we can go over your program for next quarter and then later we can check your courses with the entrance requirements to the university next semester i'd like to give you some of these books and pamphlets to read i'd like to talk to you again about this and i'll want to talk with you june at least twice each semester you see this problem of making a choice is not a simple one and it cannot be decided in a single day we'll review your tentative choice as you learn more about yourself and the world in which you will live and work thank you very much you've helped me a lot and you're welcome june i'll see you tomorrow [Music] that was a early cornet film yikes and uh it's interesting uh so there's no narrator um it's mostly i mean it there is some sync sound in it but a lot of it there's no narration um i can't remember seeing hearing any but uh yeah i i you know they started in the late 40s um and uh there's that there's shy guy there's a couple other films we have not run across the uh original materials for those yet but fingers crossed we run across stuff we're scanning new coordinate stuff all the time unfortunately none of it has sound it's almost all um original camera materials so the color is stunning never been run through a projector so it's really pretty okay so uh mitch thank you so much for the coffee one way you can reward av geeks is by going to ko-fi.com av geeks or buy me a coffee.comgeeks or be hitting like or the thumbs up button or the subscribe button or notification or all that stuff um so my way of saying thank you is to set up a film on the telecini that's called thank you and if my memory serves me correctly this is a really horrible film so enjoy foreign [Music] a typical topical bunch [Music] [Applause] [Music] punch [Music] [Music] frosting candles this this is not the worst uh christian film that i have with puppets it's not by not by a long shot there's a film uh or from a series uh in i think 70s late 70s early 80s called sunshine factory and it's worse um but uh um excuse me uh i feel like uh rhubarb was voiced by don messick who does the voice he did a lot of uh hanna-barbera voices including elroy and adam ant um but i don't know that for sure but it sounded a lot like him um but anyways thank you thanks for uh tuning in today that's what this uh that film was about was saying thank you um and then punishing the people that uh you're trying to thank by showing them wretched uh 70s christian puppet film um we have a lot more where those came from and i'll try to space them out so we don't go totally uh a horrible christian puppet film uh centric here on av geeks i try to break it up a little bit but i hope everybody has a great rest of your wednesday and um as always you know our message uh besides saying thank you to
