so so so so here i am and now it's dark hold on is that better a little bit better hey i'm skip alzheimer now i'm purple um welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films um and comment on them uh so that last film uh was made by a company that made and might still make i'm not sure i haven't been to a peace goods place in a while um clothing patterns or dress patterns um that this was the way um that lots of people had their clothes made were with they were homemade women predominantly women would buy dress patterns or get clothing patterns and they would sew them for their family um you could buy some clothes at uh department stores um but um a lot of them were kind of expensive uh and it was only probably after definitely after world war one i have a film about this it's called the 20 dress it basically talks about how mass production and the standardization of sizes um made it to where uh clothing could be manufactured cheaper uh and now we're in a state where it's insanely cheap uh to make clothing we in fact i think everybody's kind of drowning in all the cheap clothing um so uh yeah so that was definitely from another time uh pre-world war ii ish right on the heels of world war ii um so wow what is going on so the lights are just kind of changing over a period of time anyways um this next film is about power points long before there were power points um it's basically about how to engage people using visual aids properly it's made by the us government i can't remember which department but um this is basically saying like your powerpoint is boring uh you're not using it right this is how you engage your audience uh it's missing the title uh and it's got some a little bit of rocket problems but here we go enjoy i'd say it's 16 no no it's near 3 30 seconds well who's right and what's wrong with the steel rule well the steel rules all right but not for that kind of measuring why don't you try a vernier caliper we might but we probably use a micrometer one of these this handy little tool is what makes mass production possible now who among you have ever used from a comedy when you learn to use one of these you'll be much more valuable to the company and be able to do a better job now after you've had a chance to look over the mic a bit you're going to see a motion picture that'll teach you how to use it you get the idea richards of preparing the group to see the film they saw for themselves the limitations of the steel rule and i showed them the advantage of learning how to use the micrometer a chance for a better job but i wasn't quite ready yet to show the film in watching the picture i want you to notice particularly that the macrometer scales are based on the decimal system a note will know how carefully you have to handle it particularly watch the film to learn how to use and read them after you've seen the film i'll expect you to be able to read the mic yourself and you'll have a chance to show whether you can now we'll see the film i see what you mean if they know what they're looking for and why there's more chance that they're seeing it that's right it also means that before you use a picture you've got to know what's in it well then the first thing for me to do is to see the film myself that goes for the film strip you've got to preview that too now here's the manual these three things are training package a visual aids unit looks like a neat job i can see that you can't very well make specific plans about how to use the film or the film strip until you've previewed them i suppose the next step is to decide how and when and where it'll fit into my training plan there's a third important step that's very often overlooked that is you make sure that your trainees know why they're seeing a film in other words prepare them prepare them so they'll want to see the film with the micrometer film you had the mics right there in the class with you suppose it had been a milling machine or a lathe well it's not always necessary to see the machine before you see the film but if it's practical it's a good idea let them get a general idea of what the machine looks like take them to the machine show them some of the controls tell them what they'll see in the film and what you expect them to learn another idea is to ask questions either written the oral to find out what he already knows and doesn't know about the subject i suppose holding discussion the way you did with the micrometer is another way of preparing them yes and telling them what they're going to see is a fourth way sometimes you use one way sometimes another sometimes you use them in combination all right now i previewed the film and the film strip i know why i'm using them the group knows why it's seeing the film i've shown the film know what well that depends but in all cases you must follow through now when using the micrometer film i followed up the showing like this well what do we know now i think it looks pretty easy i didn't quite understand what he meant by the feel of the micrometer uh what about measuring a round piece of stock how do you know when the mic is on the diameter when you're checking the mic for accuracy how can you tell the standard's correct all right that was a good question maybe this film strip will help us find the answer then i use the film strip to review and emphasize the high points in the film the questions on the film strip developed a lot of discussion do you think it'd be a good idea to test them right away for instance why not draw the symbol and scales on the blackboard to see if they can read them correctly ah good that's all right but i use the film strip and look here in the manual several frames you see uh test questions take frame eight for instance that's right thompson 626 000. now here's another one what's that reading mr alexander now remember this is on a two inch mark one and seven hundred fifty thousand that's right now let's review the part about inside measurements now the thing to remember when reading this inside micrometer is that the numbers read backwards so to speak chroma can you explain why those numbers read from right to left it was a good way to review the film gave everyone a chance to see if he could read the micrometer you ever show the film the second time for review you would you might find there were points that were not clear at all you might find them when you showed the film strip you must remember richards that there are no set ways of using visual aid you've got to work out your own best way in terms of your own training job suppose you do have to experiment a little yes you do you learn that showing the film is never an end in itself what do you mean i mean that the teaching doesn't end when the film does that is when the teaching begins you must follow through by follow through do you mean showing trainees actually how to use the machine right in using visual aids to teach a skill the most important part of the follow-up is the actual trial and practice here's what i did now this really clinched the learning each one of these pieces had its exact width marked on it in thousands i showed them in this way what was meant by feel their readings had to come out the same as the correct measurements marked on each piece by passing the different pieces around they had practice on several different thicknesses so i followed up by using pieces without the correct measurements given makes a lot of sense i've been expecting too much from just showing the film well film and film strip won't do the training job for you riches but if you give them half a chance you'll find them as tremendous help takes time though to use them right yes it takes time to plant we found that after the planning's done if they use right the whole training process is speeded up let's see have you got a list of the films we have here yes there's one the manuals are on file here and the films and film strip are in this cabinet anytime you want to preview any of them it's easy enough to arrange to use the conference room in the meantime i'd like to check this list against my training schedule a quick way to find out what's in a picture is to look through the manuals and then if the film has in it what you want preview the film and the film strip too then after seeing the film make your plans for using it when you know what's in the picture and what you want to put across it's easy enough to figure how to prepare the trainees for seeing the film and how to get the most out of it finally there's a follow-up the film strip can be used here but remember the film strip is only part of the follow-up then you'll get the hang of that and work out your own method as soon as you've used a few of these visual units the manual gives you several suggestions but then there are a lot of other ways and variation then there's another thing you'll find that the films give you a real break so you give the films a break keep the shades pulled down tight keep direct light off the screen get the equipment set up before the group comes in have both projectors set up threaded and focus in advance that will save time and of course arrange the seats so that nobody's head gets in the way of the picture so that everybody can see the screen thanks a lot murphy for all the help you've given me you know you've talked so much about that micrometer today that i i want to learn more about it myself mind if i take this film with me how to do i'll go ahead that's fine you better take the manual and the film strip so you can do a complete job so what you're telling me in the comments is that um showing a boring film about how to use a boring film on a boring subject isn't very effective um yeah i guess that i thought that was more about uh film strips but um yeah i guess it was visual age in general and you know it really is important and this is something that um you know you just can't throw an educational film at it and think that it's gonna stick uh depending on the subject matter i mean some things you just have to have the hands-on experience and the interaction with other people to learn how to do things so you know it's a helpful film it's not necessarily an interesting film um this next film is about the miracle of life uh how to explain um concepts of birth to kid young kids how to get them started to think about it and this is using um chickens this is mother hen's family [Music] this is a story about a mother hen and her baby chicks the story begins with some grown-up chickens the boy feeding them is jerry sometimes his dog scamp watches jerry we don't see any baby chicks here these are all full grown chickens how quickly they gobble the food every morning jerry and scamp feed the chickens jerry likes to watch the hens pecking at their food drinking water and scratching in the dirt this is the father chicken what is he called that's right a rooster doesn't this rooster look handsome with his fine shiny feathers he has a big red comb on top of his head and red waffles below his cheeks yes jerry has one rooster or father chicken and ten hens or mother chickens jerry's favorite is a white hen he calls fighty mighty but just a minute whitey isn't here no she isn't here at all jerry tells camp we've got to find whitey where shall we look first maybe she's in the hen house jerry looks into the nesting boxes in the hen house but whitey is not there maybe she got out of the chicken yard let's go scamp they look under the house whitey isn't there scamp even looks inside his doghouse but whitey is not there then suddenly there's whitey but what is she doing coming out of the garage jerry has found something a nest a nest with eggs in it one two three four five six seven seven eggs yes whitey has laid seven eggs jerry can hardly wait to show his dad the eggs that whitey has laid you're right says dad seven eggs that means she's been laying about seven days jerry wants to know will she lay any more eggs we'll see says dad we'll mark every egg so we can keep track of them carefully bad marks each egg one then two and so on jerry watches closely as all the eggs are marked seven of them now you check the nest each day says dad and we'll find out if whitey will lay any more eggs the next day jerry looks at the nest there are eight eggs so he marks the new one number eight the next day after that jerry looks again this time there are nine eggs and the next day whitey is sitting on the nest and she won't get off well well says dad looks like whitey is going to set jerry isn't sure what that means do you know dad explains that a setting hen is the hen that is sitting eggs to keep them warm so they will hatch she doesn't lay any more eggs while she is setting and after a hen is setting says dad we never touch the eggs here's how we can keep track of whitey's eggs we'll use a calendar today is the day whitey started to set so jerry marks the day it's the first of may how long will it be before the eggs hatch 21 days says dad so jerry counts today is the first day so we count 21 days in all and the eggs should hatch on this day the 21st day jerry wants to know will any egg hatch in 21 days no says dad then he shows jerry the eggs they gathered from the other chickens this morning let's see what's inside one of these eggs we've all eaten eggs and we know what they look like inside this is the way most eggs look the kind we eat but what about the eggs under whitey are they any different whitey tucks the eggs under her to keep them all warm her feathers are all fluffed out to cover the eggs she sits quietly watching with her bright eyes is she thinking about her eggs jerry is watching and wondering there whitey is leaving her nest to eat now jerry can get a close look of course we all know what eggs look like inside but whitey has been sitting on these eggs keeping them warm do you think that makes any difference let's pretend that we can see inside the eggs we'll make believe that we have taken away part of the shell do you see anything something wonderful is happening something is growing inside the egg we'll have to use a pointer to point it out see it now see it the pointer is at the head of the body it's the beginning of a baby chick so that's what's happening inside the egg a tiny tiny chick is beginning to grow and so as each day passes jerry marks it off on his calendar and each day whitey sits on the eggs and keeps them warm with her body sometimes but not very often whitey leaves her nest to get something to eat but she never stays away from her nest too long because if she did the eggs would get cold do you think anything is happening the eggs are now four days old and inside each egg if we could see we'd find a growing chick four days old do you think it looks like a chick do you see its heart beating now the pointer shows us the part that will grow into a leg all the parts will grow day by day how many days have passed now let's see nine days have passed today is the tenth day today the baby chicks have been growing inside the eggs for 10 days 10 days inside the egg and this is the way the chick looks is it beginning to look more like a chick the pointer shows us the eye of the baby chick now we can see the leg and there is the wing see it move yes the baby chick is alive and now we're looking very close close to the beak do you think the beak of the baby chick is beginning to look like the beak of whitey the mother will some of the chicks look like whitey when they grow up will some of them look like their father the rooster i'll just have to wait until they hatch says jerry so jerry marks off each day until look it's the twenty first day maybe the chicks will hatch today so off they go to look dad lifts whitey off her nest the eggs don't look any different to jerry can you see any difference maybe it will be easier if we watch just one egg do you see a little hole in the shell do you hear anything look something is moving inside it looks like the baby chicks beak look now the chick is cracking the shell all around and out he tumbles he can't stand yet his legs seem too weak and he's still wet from the moisture inside the shell but now after a little while he's dry and strong enough to stand and that's the way a baby chick hatches by these chicks hatched a little while later whitey takes her family outside my jerry is proud the old rooster looks proud too [Music] but probably the proudest of all is whitey yes she has hatched nine eggs into nine what happened i have no idea it just suddenly uh the film ended um and that happens uh sometimes uh films get shredded or they don't make it uh to me um i know that because yeah we run across that all the time we're missing titles we're missing beginnings we're missing endings uh usually the middles are intact but even then sometimes you can tell like oh a big chunk of that just disappeared um these films have had hard lives by the time they've ended up with me uh all right so um behind me i have a telecini and we're gonna watch a film uh streamed live transferred live and um this one is called time so enjoy [Music] terry is building a tower of blocks [Music] this time terry builds the tower more quickly when she works more quickly terry needs less time to build the tower some things need only a short time to happen [Music] this woman writes this word in a short time but she needs a longer time to write other words do and an even longer time to draw a picture of a house some things take even a longer time to happen it takes time to fry eggs [Music] and a longer time to bake cookies [Music] or to play a game of checkers [Music] and an even longer time to read a book other things may take a very long time to happen a flower takes a long time to grow from a tiny seed to a leafy flowering plant it takes even longer for people to grow from a baby to a child to a teenager to a grown-up things happen in many different lengths of time and we can compare the time it takes for things to happen some things take a longer time and some things take a shorter time to happen when two things happen at the same time we can compare them to see which takes a longer time or a shorter time to happen the smaller gear turns faster and takes less time to turn once than the larger gear which gear is moving faster now one gear is moving just as fast as the other gear so they both take the same time to move one full turn these two boys are running to see who can reach the finish line first [Music] who ran faster who took a longer time to finish [Music] this larger boat is moving faster than the smaller boat and gets out to the harbour first it took less time than the smaller boat [Music] one car takes less time to go down the ramp than the other which car moves faster dave and terry start to drink their milkshakes they both finish together they both took the same time to drink their milkshakes so things that happen just as fast take the same time to happen time and measuring time are important to all of us we want to know the year the month the day we were born a birthday tells us how much time has passed since we were born [Music] it is also important to measure time in order to tell how long it will take to get from one place to another [Music] we soon learn which way to travel is the fastest and takes the shortest time and which way is slowest and takes the longest time many things do not happen together at the same time many things happen one after the other and they happen the same way again and again for example the sun rises in the east after the sun rises it moves high across the sky giving us daylight then it sets in the west and day becomes night after night the sun rises again in the east the time it takes for all this to happen is called one day and it happens this way every 24 hours other things take longer than a day to happen for example the moon seems to change its shape one night we may see the moon shining with a crescent shape about five days later it is a half moon after about seven days more it is a full moon then after another seven days it is a different half moon again five more days and it is a crescent moon in about two days the moon is dark and very hard to see but two days more and the moon looks like it did 28 days ago or about one month ago the moon seems to change about once a month changes also take place on earth about every three months we call these changes seasons in the summertime the weather is hot trees are covered with leaves many birds are flying above the sky is usually clear and blue and the sun is high in the sky at noon about three months later the weather becomes cooler many trees lose their leaves birds start to fly south winds blow stronger the sun is lower in the noonday sky this is autumn or fall three months later new changes take place the weather is cold and storms may bring rain and snow with grey cloudy skies some trees have lost all their leaves the sun appears low in the sky at noon it is winter [Music] but then as three more months of time pass by we notice the changes once more blossoms and leaves begin to break out the sun appears higher in the sky and it is warmer scattered clouds and rain showers come and go we call it springtime in three more months the sun is high in the noonday sky it is hot and summertime once more the earth revolves around the sun in 12 months or one year [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] we all do things like this every day some of these things take a short time and others take a longer time time is part of everything that happens by comparing the time it takes for something to happen we can describe some happenings as faster or slower or just as fast as other happenings just as we describe a thing as bigger or smaller lighter or heavier round or square because of this time is useful in observing and describing many things the scientist finds it an important part of his work and experiments the use of time is part of transportation industry government agriculture business education we find that everything has something to do with time time is a very important part of everyday living [Music] so someone very astutely in the comments pointed out that the narrator was a narrator uh voice actor that was in a lot of hanna-barbera films so look at that it was a hanna-barbera film i don't know how many of those existed um it's kind of interesting um but it makes sense that they could have done that they have the technology to do it um i should say that for lunch today my wife prepared me a bento box i'm gonna get it so it's a japanese bento box that all fits together and in it is leftover chicken and rice and broccoli which i ate apple slices and peanuts and this is all from the show that i watched religiously one of my favorite shows it's on nhk uh it's a japanese documentary uh show about uh people's lunches in japan and what they do it's called lunch on and what they do is they go visit uh people who work in different places you learn about what they do at work and then you learn what they have for lunch and sometimes it's very elaborate bento sometimes it is leftovers and sometimes it's just something they picked up at the grocery store or at the convenience store and sometimes it's just some ramen noodles that they heated up in the microwave so uh it's a great show i watched i think there's like 80 episodes and i watched almost all of them that i could find online um big fan all right anyways uh let me stop something [Music] all right uh let's see what else we got for you today uh this is gonna run long but it's a good one um it's called espionage target you and this is a cold war film about the dangers of accidentally spying for the other side enjoy [Music] this man's name is nick makratos destination munich occupation freelance journalist door-to-door salesman jack of all trades with no particular skill in any but in vienna his last stop in a search of fortune mccrado's made a contact that promises to open for him a whole new career so [Music] this girl's name is tomoko kimura occupation taxi dancer in tokyo's music hall a favorite night spot of american servicemen lately having struck up an acquaintance with a u.s marine tomoko has made his service club her afternoon hangout [Music] [Music] this is janos a national of a european country his destination an american air base [Music] different people in different parts of the world but all with a common mission for each is a hostile agent of the worldwide sino-soviet intelligence network pardon sir could i trouble you for a match their job to exploit if and when the opportunity arises you the service man and woman in order to gain access to information that can be of value to an enemy [Music] [Applause] [Music] these cases have been taken from the files of the army intelligence corps the office of special investigation u.s air force and the office of naval intelligence today we're going to show you three cases of attempted espionage by agents of the sino-soviet intelligence system for security reasons certain names and locations have been altered but essentially these things happen they are typical case histories as these cases unfold you recognize the way a cyano or soviet agent operates both in finding someone vulnerable to subversion as well as in their technique of ensnaring him then applying pressure to get him to play ball we show you these cases so you'll be on your guard today all over the world there are thousands of sino-soviet intelligence agents with money to burn looking for unsuspecting targets for exploitation among members of our forces there may be someone right now taking your measure probing for a vulnerable area whether it be loneliness deadenness desire for sex easy money or the sporting life in fact everyone in uniform could be a target of opportunity for exploitation if he is vulnerable profit from these cases learn how to recognize the approach of an enemy agent and if ever approached what to do remember these things happen they may never happen to you then again they may first the case of nick mcrados [Music] arriving in munich makrados recruited in vienna by a task representative joined the ranks of the 16 000 communist agents operating in the republic of west germany [Music] weekends american servicemen from augsburg where a contingent of the seventh army was stationed crowded the schwabbing district of munich looking for a good time this became a cradle's stamping ground as he waited for his pigeons to show up he had already made contact with pfc templeton and private carris some time before may i take care of that fellows locratos had bited his time while pete carris found his new bar acquaintance a highly likable and sociable chap quick to pick up the tab promising to introduce him to girls also coming from the same ethnical background as pete's own family finally at this meeting makratos sprang the trap i want you to do me a little favor really there is nothing to it i want to write an article about the seventh army for my newspaper back home my country you know is very friendly to the united states it's just routine stuff i could get it by reading the stars and stripes from your own information officer but it is too much trouble so i am willing to pay you to save me from going all the way to augsburg pfc templeton wasn't one to turn down a fast buck a loan shark in his barracks because his partner had suddenly pulled out he was head over heels in depth how much well how much would you say 200 marks okay it is agreed hey pete now let's have another round raw line more drinks for my friends if you will [Music] [Applause] fine a small formality pete if you'll just sign this receipt [Applause] that just says for services rendered we know what it's for come pete the girls are waiting pete carris was hooked though as yet he didn't know it in the next few weeks for payment received the two servicemen delivered to their benefactors several other apparently harmless items of information including a classified training manual but mccredo's had bigger fish to fry [Applause] drinks for my two friends please [Music] where is peter bedroom feed why don't you leave us alone hey her house you must get me an m14 rifle he must be off your rocker i have just come from a friend he has a great admiration for this gun he is willing to pay high you must be putting me on the cradles how high 2 000 marks can you arrange why would mcrados pay 500 for a rifle he could buy for one-fifth of that amount but if templeton had one principle it was never look a gift horse in the mouth we'll arrange tamp good i'll tell my friend let me know when you can deliver private you know where to find me [Applause] [Music] i don't like it i don't like it at all we're both in too deep to renege now in a way the private was right for makrados had been careful to get his signature to the last receipt the kratos is a good egg he won't get us into trouble as long as he keeps shelling out the dough i say here's to the cradle [Music] to pull the job templeton had recruited another member to the ring a serviceman deep in hock to him [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] in the next few months there were other mysterious losses from an arms room of company b all this by way of laying the groundwork for what the soviet intelligence agent pulling the strings the man behind the kratos really wanted [Music] how is everything everything is fine won't you sit down here golos was one of a great number of soviet intelligence agents who operate today under a legal cover in his case as a representative of the tas international newspaper services you are waiting for someone yes i have two friends i must meet for lunch then i wouldn't teach you in fact i have a luncheon wouldn't that appointed appealed [Music] [Music] holy mackerel my friend is willing to pay high very very high it's impossible there's sentries fences feel like trying to break into fort knox how high macrado eight thousand dollars enough to split many ways i've had it sit down pete what do you think you are never mind that you'd better sit down hey what would you say if your commanding officer were to receive a certain piece of paper with your signature pete what he's saying is we're hooked and how give us time it's a big job certainly all the time you wish in the next week pfc templeton cased the area where the special atomic weapon was stored he also managed to strike up a friendship with one of the centuries meanwhile pete carris was having some second thoughts if he wasn't yet aware of his betrayal of his buddies his family and his country he at least knew he'd got his neck in a noose that was drawing ever more tight you're in this all the way you try any monkey shine sunny and i swirl [Music] [Applause] however by the time templeton had things well in hand the plot had been reported by karis to his co the grab was made the day makratos appeared at helga's apartment to make a down payment on the deal when the servicemen were later court-martialed because of his last-minute confession karis was to receive a lighter sentence than the others on the other hand templeton along with a dishonorable discharge and loss of all benefits received 10 years at hard labor plus a stigma he would bear the rest of his life as for makratos he was to be tried under the espionage laws of the federated republic of west germany in one year alone more than two thousand communist agents were caught in west germany between 1950 and 1960 more than nineteen thousand such agents confessed to espionage missions in that country let me show you something this is the headquarters of mfs the east german ministry for state security located in east berlin from here the mfs controls a network of trained and well-equipped agents operating in west germany and elsewhere it is really masterminded with the soviets who use it to their advantage and take the best information which it controls it has ample funds modern espionage equipment and highly experienced staff officers it has 22 000 staff officers and hundreds of millions of dollars to spend all for one purpose to buy information that could compromise our nation's security now this is only one of several communist intelligence agencies in another iron curtain country there's another agency just as dedicated as the east german mfs which carries on espionage against us in fact z2 the intelligence branch of the polish armed forces maintains a tremendous filing system called kartoka personnel or personal index on u s officers especially those in high positions a compilation of information on the officer's unit his career his family and personal habits anything that might turn up an achilles heel a vulnerable spot that would make him a likely target of opportunity for exploitation however z2's efforts to subvert members of our armed forces are by no means confined to officer personnel as our second case will show not long ago to warsaw to visit her aged mother came the wife of the u.s air force sergeant desperate to get her parent out of the country she was given the run around until one day mrs duncan born baranowski was summoned to the office of a z2 official believe me mrs duncan we are not unsympathetic but as you know immigration is against the laws of our country however in your case i think it is possible to make an exception in return for uh shall we say a small favor from intercepted letters from her visa application and from other sources z2 had a considerable dossier on mrs duncan's husband an airman stationed in a middle eastern country and who because of his duties had access to classified information and so if he cooperates the lady in time your mother will join you talk it over with him we will be in touch mrs duncan upon return from warsaw discussed the situation with her husband he reported to osi who instructed him to report any further contacts reassured by her husband christina duncan had almost forgotten the incident but on the third monday after her return just as the z2 official had promised she was contacted [Music] hello who where all right i'll be there [Music] okay just take it easy honey i'll handle it take over for me ed i've got to see the commander [Music] so [Applause] [Music] when christina duncan delivered her first assignment to the z2 agent the meeting was under surveillance of osi agents and local authorities who had prepared the information [Music] over the next few months to a drop in an area frequented by tourists mrs duncan delivered other information prepared by osi the number and type of aircraft at the base its facility charts and other important looking but unclassified materials [Music] finally mrs duncan's reward came the day her mother liberated from the iron curtain country was able to join her daughter the time had now come for apprehension of the z2 hireling coached by osi agents mrs duncan requested a meeting on the pretext of delivering an important message [Music] when she arrived at their meeting place janos did not have her weight long good morning [Music] was never able to transmit that information for he an easy all vulnerable areas ripe for exploitation but there is yet a more common pressure point of the serviceman seldom overlooked by the sino-soviet intelligence agent that brings us to our third case tomoko kimura was no matter harry but she had her value to her employer a sino intelligence agent using sex as bait she'd been able to elicit odds and ends of information concerning the goings-on of a technical representative for an american electronics firm her boyfriend corporal bissell went about his duties comfortable in the knowledge that upon his return an appetizing dish would almost certainly be awaiting him [Music] here buddy did you hear the latest got it through the grapevine scotty's out the corner of the black market he's bought himself over 150 fifths of booze who does he think he's kidding why that's even little rascal who's scottie johnny who's scottie huh this man scotty who is he oh just some american tech crap over here on classified stuff what's it to you tomoko i just wondered come on miss nosy we've more important things to do [Music] two days later young walter p scott an american technical representative inexperienced in oriental ways and with access to classified material received a message that it would be to his interest to dine that evening with a certain mr kai [Music] and so my friend for two cases of scotch i would gladly pay what you accustomed to receive but why me oh come now mr scott i happen to know this is not a new experience for you got the wrong man mr kai scott would be most interested in my information i assure you it is most reliable [Music] upon scott's performance of the requested service standard sino-soviet intelligence procedure followed obtaining his signature to an un-itemized receipt designed to pin him forever to a hook in time the pressure was applied on scott to sell another type of service this involved the theft of classified data so vital to his responsibility in japan but scott fully aware he was traveling a one-way road to treason finally had the good sense and judgment to get off that one-way road and rush to see the security officer an investigation was started immediately hey bissell you got a minute oh sure tom come in do you remember the day you told me about scotty hoarding all that booze did you battle that to anyone else why top uh he's in a pack of trouble so think hard corporal yeah to mike wilson i remember tomoko and her pal were there too she kept asking me about it wanted to know all about scotty kept after me for hours that's probably our pipeline come on we're gonna see the security off [Music] [Applause] the wrap-up of the case the chinese communist intelligence agent was apprehended in midst of receiving stolen material that same day the service club was declared off-limits to tomoko kimura there are important lessons all of us can learn from these cases of attempted penetration of our nation's security first beware of the stranger you may meet at the bar or in the street who goes out of his way to cultivate you the man who like nick mcragos plies you with favors in order to win your friendship it is just possible he may have something else in mind secondly recognize the modus operandi of the hostile intelligence agent almost a standard pattern to lure the unsuspecting victim into a trap until like pete carris he is in so deep there seems no way out thirdly and above all if you suspect an approach by a communist agent know what to do don't try to handle it yourself instead stall for time and like sergeant duncan report the approach immediately to your co or the nearest security officer almost daily the espionage war being waged by the sino-soviet intelligence network grows more intense today it is common knowledge that soviet espionage agents are operating everywhere even the soviet tourists may have an intelligence assignment in addition thousands of nationals of other countries are in the employ of this system remember we cannot be too alert for no one in uniform sailor soldier airman or marine is immune to an approach by a member of this worldwide network but each of us is responsible for safeguarding the security of our military forces and so we repeat if you are ever approached to perform even a seemingly harmless service having to do with your military duties or know of another serviceman being involved in such an approach report it at once to your co or nearest security officer so that our counter intelligence forces may cope with this threat whatever you say will be held in strict confidence by doing so you'll be fulfilling service regulations you'll be performing a patriotic service to your country and you will be helping to keep information vital to the strength of our armed forces and our
