so so so so so so hello everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show um where we watch old 16 millimeter films and that last film was it was kind of interesting it was uh we've been scanning a bunch of old coronet films for the company that owns coronet now uh phoenix learning group and so we run across films that have no soundtrack and that was a complete film with a separate soundtrack so um the reason for that is that they could uh have other language soundtracks that they could add to it like french or german or whatever um so there's debate about the uh when this film was made it says in the says uh 1976 and i could look it up in worldcat and see um yeah this is fascinating i'm sure from watching me type how people [Music] choose jobs let's see what comes up in worldcat worldcat is not always great so 1976 is what um it says shows how aptitude interest training pay availability availability fringe benefits and company size influence the jobs that workers choose there you go how about that okay uh where are we we're uh uh i have another film set up on the uh telecini telecini tell us any i do this because it the way the webcam is it's very confusing it's not like a mirror so it throws me off um anyways uh so this is i am me and i want to be enjoy is you and me but you and i are society jessica time for school school boy do you know i've been going to school for four years nursery school kindergarten first grade now second grade oh well today i'm gonna play kickball with your boys [Music] jessica don't forget your homework homework boy two plus two read write society all that stuff [Music] you know what we have to do today make them a story about ourselves and read it to a class yes you'll be late i'm waiting for terry i am me you are you and i am me we're both society is you and me but you and i are society [Music] i've got a mother and a father and a sister and a brother and a dog and a cat i've got some black prince and some my friends and some tall friends and sisters and a goldfish who is fat somebody skip and chum that walk and some that run and send the talk all my friends are mostly glad but sometimes some of us get mad when we fight and act real bad then someone will end up sad and i have a teacher this is my school i sit right here my best friend amy sits right there [Music] jimmy sits there and sally sits there sally bugs me she's so bossy then there's louie and jenny and roger and bobby and tommy theresa and susie and bobby and megan and peter and johnny and mary francesca and marcus and ronald and terry looks like carrie goofed off on his homework almost finished terry who wants to go first amy how about you what i like about myself i like being in my room and closing the door and nobody comes in and you have to knock three times to come in i like playing with my doll house that my grandfather made sometimes my friends come in and play with me well all i like about myself is riding my bike i pretend i'm a racer [Music] i like to go in the garage and make things i want to play the piano i'm going to be a ballerina [Music] i'm going to be a doctor i'm going to be a basketball player [Music] what do you want to be today when you grow up firemen what do you want to be when you are big and tall i'm a star what do you want to be when you're no longer small what do you want to be in winter spring and fall i'm going to be jackie what do you want to be today when you grow up a college or what's a college or a college is when you grow up and go to college [Music] [Applause] well maybe i'll try football what do you want to be when you are big i want to be me i couldn't find a quiet place in the house i have three older brothers see well they built a tree house and now i get to use it daisy and i go up there alive you can hear the whole world up there the thing i like best about me is i like to play the same games that boys play and my favorite thing about school is recess terry thinks i'm the best kickballer in school [Laughter] boy that makes me so mad i have feelings you know [Music] i feel scared i feel brave i feel proud i feel loud i feel smart i feel dumb i feel friendship for my friend i feel better everyone has feelings sometimes i help my little sister tie her shoes i feel important i helped my friend learn how to ride his bike and i felt proud my daddy rolled me around and i felt loved what i love about my brother he gave me this basketball for my birthday what i love about my mother every morning she says hello angel and i kiss her well over about my father he says shh the baby's sleeping and he said real quiet what i love about my sister she has a lot of books and i get to read them what i love about myself is when i'm all by myself and no one bothers me love is like a star falling down and you wish your special place could be up in a swing a treehouse a dollhouse or most anything inside or outside or in a big crowd you think of your own thoughts and feel very proud your special place should be some place to go to think for yourself and yourself get to know for you are your own self there's only one you and only your own self knows what you should do [Applause] [Music] inside of every big guy you'll find there is a little guy a small guy who wants to become a big guy i wonder why you big guys don't talk to all those little guys if you do you'll find the reasons why your little guy needs help from you it's easy for big guys to do and with a little help from you your small guy learns to grow up [Music] that little guy who wants to be a big guy inside of every big guy he'll find a busy little guy who wants to be a big guy just like you every big guy has a little guy inside big guy little guy where's a smile where's a frown laughs at himself shouldn't laugh at others inside of every big guy you'll find there is a little guy who wants to be a big guy just like you you are you and i am me we're both a part of society smile upon your face all your charms and all your friends are on the outside looking in it's so simple if you try you get so happy you could cry you and i should try and see if both of us [Music] begins with huh [Music] [Applause] [Music] that uh that was pretty great uh no idea really no idea i have not seen that before and this is why i love that we have the telecity behind us because this is an opportunity for me to go to the back of the av geeks uh and go through shelves and find stuff that i just haven't seen um and we've had some pretty good examples of that this week where we've been watching stuff that i haven't seen and they were really good uh some of them not so good but uh you know that's kind of the uh roll of the dice of the roulette wheel um anyways uh let's uh learn about the pharmacist enjoy life work [Music] this is a microscopic view of germs magnified several million times when germs attack the human body they often cause serious and dangerous diseases such as diphtheria a vicious disease of children germs and unknown trillions upon trillions infest the earth they and name and destroy human life to combat these germs and to protect public health modern medical practice enlists the aid of vaccines serums medicines and drugs the science of preparing and dispensing these medicines and drugs is called pharmacy one of the oldest professions known to man and the key figure in this profession is the highly trained registered pharmacist he may be the man working diligently in the research laboratory seeking to develop new and better forms of medication or he may be found in a pharmaceutical plant controlling the strength purity and quality of drug products or he may be serving in any one of almost 60 000 retail drug stores throughout the country cooperating with physicians in the interest of public health although the corner drug store is often an all-service institution its most important function is to serve as the health center of the community a doctor's prescription may seem mysterious to the average layman but it's all very simple to the pharmacist it may contain chemical names or abbreviated medical terms but the pharmacist understands it perfectly it is his responsibility to make sure that each prescription is filled exactly as the doctor has ordered accuracy and skill are synonymous with pharmaceutical technique an error in the compounding of a prescription could be injurious or even fatal to the patient so the pharmacist must take every precaution in his work he checks and double checks both the instructions and the required ingredients after the medicine is compounded he transcribes the necessary instructions on the label each prescription has its own serial registry number which goes on permanent file to be kept on record as required by law annually about 300 million prescriptions are filled by pharmacists to be a pharmacist one must be a graduate of an accredited college of pharmacy and pass the state examination for a license the pharmacist in common with all professional men has a responsibility for ethical and conscientious service to his community for at one time or another human life will depend on his ability accuracy and integrity on the pharmacy shelves are many drugs that must be used only under professional direction many of these are restricted items and must not fall into unscrupulous hands before he can fill any prescription containing poisons or narcotics the druggist must obtain the purchaser signature and address and the reason for the purchase in a special ledger in very large drug stores the pharmacist devotes his time exclusively to filling prescriptions in smaller stores he may also be in charge of hospital and sick room supplies as well in these stores the prescription business is generally life so the pharmacist who is usually the owner sells many other products to maintain a sufficient volume of business success in pharmacy as in any other profession is achieved by diligence persistence and strict regard for professional ethics in recent years specialized prescription stores have become more numerous here pharmacists sell only pharmaceutical products and supplies as specialists they keep up with all current developments in the drug field and can supply physicians with expert information on this subject specialization is also required in the field of hospital pharmacy which offers opportunities for both men and women here pharmacists must compound drugs fill prescriptions prepare antiseptic solutions serums and vaccines and make bacteriological and clinical tests those in supervisory positions are responsible for the purchase of medical supplies and for the general administration of their departments veterans bureau hospitals also require many pharmacists for staff duty in fact the government is one of the largest employers of pharmacists many positions are open to trained men and women in the food and drug administration to inspect commercial products for purity and quality in the public health service to prepare and dispense medicines in cooperation with physicians and in the internal revenue bureau and other federal agencies all of these government jobs are under civil service with definite steps for advancement and usually offer permanent employment a degree from a college of pharmacy is essential for this type of work the navy and the army however prefer to train their own pharmacists since they're also taught to administer the medicines they compound a pharmaceutical background is invaluable for individuals with special aptitudes those with ability for organization can find excellent opportunities for service in professional and trade associations those who like outdoor work can find opportunities in the growing of medicinal plants those who have literary ability may serve as writers and editors for professional magazines and trade journals and those with the competence to teach may become instructors in colleges of pharmacy preparations for a career in pharmacy should begin in high school a part-time job in a drug store will determine whether a student has real interest and ability in this field by assisting the registered pharmacist the student also gains useful experience and helpful knowledge that will be of great benefit to him later while acquiring this practical experience the prospective pharmacist should study chemistry and biology a foundation is thus prepared for his college work which generally consists of a four-year course leading to a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy if he needs financial assistance scholarships may be available to me part of the college expenses after graduation he must pass a state board examination before receiving a license to practice most states now grant reciprocity to out-of-state applicants although only a small percentage of pharmacists are women the proportion is steadily increasing women make good pharmacists and opportunities are open to them in every phase of the profession many are employed as technicians and supervisors by drug manufacturers in this field registered pharmacists are in constant demand not only in the manufacture of pharmaceutical products but also a salesman and detailed men to visit physicians and drug us and to give technical advice on the latest developments in medicines and drugs these developments are carried out by research pharmacists in the laboratories to them goes much of the credit for the advancement in the treatment of disease they strive constantly to find new medicinal weapons to combat man's greatest enemies the germs of disease daily headlines tell us of their results of lives saved by new drugs vaccines and serums in this dramatic fight to preserve and protect the nation's health the carnage ruggist plays a role that is just as important as that of the scientists in the research laboratory the clinic and the experimental station for in the end each new discovery finds its way to the local retail pharmacy the corny druggist acts as a distributor of medical products in every part of the nation for those who can qualify who combine manual dexterity and accuracy with professional integrity this field offers excellent opportunities for useful service to humanity for both men and women the work is confining and requires continual skill and diligence but the rewards are satisfying for this is work that contributes directly to human welfare study your interests and aptitudes and compare them with the requirements of maybe that's uh maybe that's an issue um so frustrating so it was a very very frustrating um anyhow uh let's let's get back to old educational films that we know are not going to be a problem here we go how to read novels [Music] [Music] we meet many people in a lifetime some we see often and understand a little others we know hardly at all stop a moment and think how little we know about the lives the motives the hopes and fears of the people around us [Music] people are different each has his own life story his own memories and ambitions [Music] people are alike too in many ways if we study them [Music] one way to study people is through reading in the books and stories we read we can learn about people and ourselves in novels especially we can begin to understand why people behave as they do walt has been assigned a novel to read as we read along with him we can learn something of how to read novels silas marner by george eliot a novel of long ago before we read the novel itself let's learn a little about the author who was george eliot george elliott was a woman who lived in victorian england we can imagine her in her study marian evans for that was her real name wrote book reviews and helped edit various london magazines she also wrote novels under the pen name of george eliot in a letter to a friend she wrote i am writing a story which came across my other plans by a sudden inspiration it is extremely unlike the popular stories going it is a story of old-fashioned village life in such a village george eliot had spent her childhood the story of silas marner takes place in the village of ravalo which the author tells us was never reached by the vibrations of the coach horn or of public opinion a village shut off from the outside world one where ignorance led to superstition and fear a village largely made up of farmers who needed only a few craftsmen such as the weaver to supply their needs such a village george eliot knew as a child it is the setting for the story of silas marner knowing something about the author being able to picture the setting these help us understand a novel any novel thus by visualizing the coast of maine we may better enjoy the novel mary peters by mary ellen chase here where the quiet picturesque farmland competes with a wild sea for the lives of the people the story of mary peters is torn and tossed between sea and land london is the setting we should bear in mind when we read many of charles dickens novels more recently john galsworthy has written novels in which these settings are important or we must imagine the mississippi river and its steamers if we are to appreciate fully many of the stories of mark twain and an english village much like this one is the setting for silas marner as we read we shall keep the setting in mind for in the setting and partly because of it the story takes place the first person we meet in the story is silas marner himself those large brown protuberant eyes in silas marner's pale face really saw nothing very distinctly can we picture this man can we guess how he might have looked brown protuberant eyes pale face think of such a man whom we have seen then begin to imagine how silas marner looked meet him as we do in the novel a man alone set off from the other villagers at whose approach the shepherd's dog barked even the shepherd himself was not quite sure that this trait of weaving indispensable though it was could be carried on entirely without the help of the evil one yes by picturing in our minds the person's described by the author we help make a story come to life often as in hawthorne's the scarlet letter it is important to understand the character of a whole community of people a people amongst whom religion and law were almost identical so that the mildest and the severest acts alike were made venerable and awful here we have a setting and characters for a grim story of puritanical morality in other novels such as cooper's the deer slayer one central character is the key to the story meet hurry harry as described by james fenimore cooper both good humored and handsome a man whose heir was free though his manner necessarily partook of the rudeness of a border life unless you picture this man you cannot fully enjoy the story so it is we approach novels finding out about the author imagining the setting meeting the characters and picturing them this takes time and most novels are not read all at once when we stop we should think back over what we have read before we put the book aside when we have another chance to read further we first recall the people and the situations they were in when we last put down the book in silas marner we have a story set in a remote english village we know something about the main character a lonely weaver of whom the townsfolk are suspicious as we read further we learn that silas marner is a miser his only friends are the gold and silver coins he keeps hidden beneath the floor of his cottage this is the way george eliot describes the scene how the guineas shone as they came pouring out of the dark leather mouths he spread them out in heaps and bathed his hands in them then he counted them and set them up in regular piles and felt their rounded outline between his thumb and fingers thus we come to know silas marner of course there are other people in the novel one is dunstan cass of whom the author tells us that his taste for swapping and betting might turn out to be a sowing of something worse than wild oats dunstan needed money and one day on a sudden impulse he decided to borrow some from silas what happened at the cottage let the author tell us the door opened and he found himself in front of a bright fire which lit up the cottage marner was not there what dunstan does next tells us more much more about his character he needs money the cottage is deserted in the author's words the pressing question where is the money now took entire possession of him thus by picturing the characters in the setting and with events happening to them we begin to understand these characters we begin to know them more intimately than we know persons we see every day after we are well into a story we can often enrich our reading by discussing it with others the comments of our friends may change our own ideas and help us see the people and events of the story in a new light sometimes we are asked to prepare a more formal discussion a book report when we are planning to make book reports we read more carefully we watch for clues that build up the characters and plot we are alert for good writing and we also notice things that are not so good what goes into a book report a written report may be brief or long it may discuss parts of a book some interesting character or incidents or the book as a whole oral reports can be especially interesting a small group can give a book chat or you may want to tell the class yourself what you have gained from reading a novel if you have read it well your job is easy what you have learned about the author may be part of your report how you picture the setting of the novel what you think of the main character and then you may tell about one exciting event in the story so that others will want to read the novel and meet the people you have come to know dunstan has gone taking the money with him silas has returned he is thinking about the roast of pork he has been given such a miser would never have bought it for himself what will happen when will marner discover his loss now that we understand something about the author the setting the characters we are better able to enjoy this tense exciting moment in the novel [Music] um what may i ask is a dear little cupcake like you doing with nasty old school books my dear child we haven't had school or books and ages no school really why don't you get rid of that school book you can drop them in here it'll get all burned up in there well of course it will dear child and so it should books tamper with man's basic natural ignorance now what could be worse than that but i can't find this book at school property nonsense apple sugar [Music] [Music] i know you'd rather play so why don't you throw all your books away books are made burning the fire is already yearning to put [Music] is [Music] books will not make and you bad for your eyes i am sure you agree so why don't you give all your books to me good [Music] see the flames morning higher [Music] books can only confuse teaching you things you can't you you should listen to me burning your books will set your mind free [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] no stop apple sugar um yeah uh yes i did show that that uh long cornet film just so i could show uh books were for burning that film oh that snippet is from a film called magnificent major which was part of a series that was made [Music] it's a very weird series it's it it's taking the concept of a children's book and then it's extrapolating but in a very weird way so this is about wizard of oz but it's not it's yeah it doesn't really make sense but um of the two films i've seen in the series um no maybe i've seen three they all have music but this one by far is the best and the entire film has got some great stuff um so any excuse i can get to show it um so there you go um let's leave you anniversary of the challenger explosion which i did not know uh and so i apologize that was um yeah didn't know that uh i guess this is the the price we pay when we um when i uh show stuff and i'm not acutely aware of all the news that's going on um sometimes what i show uh relates directly to something that is going on at this very moment and so i apologize for that that was not meant to be a callous look at the space program and nasa's efforts um and so uh and i'm a big fan of nasa so i mean the idea is that you know they keep trying they keep trying um and it's a bunch of engineers and it's a bunch of people and uh sometimes horrible things happen um and so um yeah anyhow uh thanks for tuning in today um and we will see you again on monday monday might be a special day i have to struggling i have a couple of friends who are nurses and they are dealing with a lot so buy them lunch or dinner or help them go grocery shopping or you know do their laundry do something nice they do
