so so so so so so so so so so so so so hello everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and uh that last one we watched uh is part of a a complete film called america goes over and it's basically footage of world war one army and navy and the thing is i've run across so many different copies of this that have different versions and different sections cut out that i'm not 100 sure you know who officially put this out um and how it was released and and all that stuff so i have a copy which is only 400 feet um that version i showed it was from oregon archives and that was had mostly different uh content than what i had then uh prelinger uh archive we digitized stuff for them and they had even more different styles so it's uh yeah i'm you know it's one of these things where that early footage probably got uh you know clipped up and resourced i mean it didn't originate on 16 it was shot on 35 and probably distributed on 35 and then different entities reduced down to 16 and released it for home markets or whatever so there you go um so yesterday youtube slammed us showing an eastern european uh cartoon and this is not the first time that this has happened uh i think that what this means is besides not showing disney films i probably can't show eastern european cartoons um which is regrettable um you know or i just need to brace myself for the fact that they might bring us down um so it's very frustrating uh very very frustrating this is why we broadcasted different things including twitch facebook um then uh also twitter um although you can't really comment on things like that so anyways i appreciate that some of you were able to jump over and find other things while i was waiting to get the get it back up uh so this next home i don't know if i've shown this or not it's short um and it's awesome uh i don't i can't find it in my uh spreadsheet of things that i've shown so we'll watch it um because it deals with the miracle of petroleum petrox enjoy [Music] it was just about a year ago now that texaco announced the new sky chief supercharged with petrox do you remember what we said we honestly believe that top octane sky chief supercharged with petrox is the biggest thing that has hit the industry in a long long time it is the only such additive being used by any oil company the fact that it is derived entirely from petroleum is important because it doesn't contain anything that can leave harmful engine deposits this performance has been spectacular and i predict that you're going to be surprised at the enthusiastic reports you get from your customers when they start using it the many letters we receive prove mr barrett was right about your customers after switching to texaco sky chief with petrox i've increased my gasoline mileage about 15 to 20 miles per tank fill since the new sky chief with petrox came out i have used it almost entirely and it has eliminated the knock completely my car has better starting better mileage and above all more pep i can feel the difference hundreds of such letters have come in from enthusiastic customers and petrox is proving to be more of a miracle additive than even we had thought it to be but the biggest story of all the revolutionary story of what petrox does is an engine life remember the story of panther de leon he was the spanish dandy who lived back in the 1500s [Music] ponce didn't like the idea of growing old any better than the rest of us do he had heard about a wonderful fountain of youth whose waters made old men feel young again and ponce had said that's for me so he set sail for america determined to find the magic fountain that would turn back the years but alas instead of the fountain of youth all ponce found was florida [Music] so he sailed back to spain dreaming of the days of his youth and ever since then a lot of people like ponce have been looking for a way to beat the years it's tantalizing too because science has done a swell job of lengthening the life of a lot of other things take baby carriages or take automobiles antique cars are quite a hobby these days people get a big kick out of shining up old dela hays and wriggles and mercers and parading them down main street you even hear some of them say they don't make them like this anymore and they're right too we sure don't make them like that anymore we make them a whole lot better back in 1925 the life expectancy of a new car was 25 000 miles that's once around the world [Music] today a new car can expect to keep going almost indefinitely thanks to better design better materials better workmanship and most important to good lubricants and fuels ah but there's a catch in this longer life statistic the catch is this as all panther de leon would have agreed what's the use of living to be a hundred if you're going to feel like a hundred and once the use of having a car last for years if after the first few thousand miles it loses its zip [Music] drives like an old jalopy and burns gasoline like a modern airliner [Applause] texaco has been working for years on the problem of engines that grow old before their time the heart of the problem lies at the heart of the engine the combustion chambers this is where power begins and as the car ages this is where power is lost and fuel consumption goes up there's no mystery about it combustion deposits and wear have always been the two major causes deposits on valves for instance make them stick keep them from seeding properly and compression is lost wear on the piston ring spoils a tight seal and again compression is lost and compression is power now for the first time in automobile history something revolutionary has been done about these two engine killers that something is petrox the all petroleum additive petrox does some remarkable things when added to gasoline sky chief gasoline for instance leaves a thin film of petrox on every surface it touches the fuel tank the fuel line the carburetor and most important the inside of the cylinder that fill may be only two or three molecules thick but it has a spectacular effect in reducing wear a second big point about petrox can be demonstrated in this way let's burn some after all that's what happens in a cylinder it burns [Music] because petrox is all petroleum and contains no metallic substance it burns completely there is no residue to build up on valves and valve stems and in the combustion chamber but petrox has a further chemical action that is important it has a tendency to prevent certain ingredients of the base gasoline such as tetraethyl lead from leaving deposits in the combustion chamber all of these characteristics of petrox are having an amazing effect on engine life the first hint of the change came when texaco road tested petrox in comparison with major competitive premium gasolines containing other types of additives as the cars piled up mileage on identical runs the efficiency of each car was plotted and after the first few miles an amazing thing happened the cars using major competitive premium gasolines followed the normal aging curve miles per gallon dropped along with power pickup and general performance the thing that threw the scientists for a loop was the performance of the cars using petrox for the first 25 000 miles their fuel economy power and zip actually improved and at fifty thousand miles their efficiency was still as good as when they started somewhere they seem to have found a fountain of youth the story of these light lines is one of the most exciting in automobile history in many road tests the study of the engine parts has given the reason for this long life for example here are some intake manifolds from cars run the same number of miles this one used a major competitor's premium gasoline this one use petrox the cleaning action of petrox is striking let's look at some valve ports from identical engines notice the deposits left by a major competitor's premium gasoline containing their additive this engine used petrox [Music] a look at some intake valves is revealing the three sets were from identical engines in a 20 000 mile test the two sets to the right used major competitive premium gasolines the set to the left used petrox [Music] here are some combustion chambers showing deposit buildup these used a major competitors premium gasoline these used petrox these three identical sets of pistons ran twenty thousand miles the set on the right used petrox the two sets on the left used major competitors premium gasolines containing their additives the spark plug at the left used petrox the plug at the right used a major competitor's gasoline using petrox spark plug life and efficiency increased more than 300 percent [Music] we thought we had reduced wear on piston rings all that was possible with javelin motor oil but petrox has cut wear even more drastically all of these comparisons explain why petrox keeps a car young twice as long but what does that mean to the owner it means just this he can save as much as 2 gallons in a 20 gallon tank full of gasoline it explains such letters as this one before the new gasoline came out i used to get 15 and a half miles per gallon now my average mileage has come up to 17.8 and at 50 000 miles he can still brag about that jack rabbit under the hood [Music] but how about cars that are already old when they start using petrox well it would be foolish to say that petrox can put back the metal already worn off the engine but it will stop that wear in its tracks it will stop those deposits from building up anymore it can get rid of some of those deposits so we come to the 64 question what is petrox petrox is a complex poly-molecular petrochemical synthesized by catalytic and pyrolytic reformation polymerization and combination of isomeric substituted cyclic aliphatic and paraffinic hydrocarbons that's just our way of saying that petrox is a secret and we have no intention of giving it away to your competitors no we may not have found the fountain of youth panther de leon was looking for so he could stay young but we definitely found something that will make car engines stay young that something is petrox the miracle petroleum additive it gives you the best first team in the industry the best gasoline i thought for a second uh that petrox was some sort of um lead additive um but i think that what i read is it's a actually detergent and the idea was that it helped with knocking um with high compression uh engines that's that's what i read anyways um yeah uh you know fascinating stuff uh to see um how uh texaco marketed and this was not meant for the general public this was marketing to service stations um who were carrying texaco or who were affiliated with texaco because they say at some point that we're not going to sell this to your competitors um that this is just going to be a little boy at least that's what his mother told him now the unusual thing about this little boy was that every time he spoke he said i want i want to play hide and seek i want to be the leader [Music] i want an ice cream guy and if he didn't get his wish [Music] people soon became tired of the little boy who only said i want they stayed away he became very lonely [Music] he hoped for a new friend he wished with all his might then something magical happens [Music] what is it [Music] he was so excited that he forgot to say i want [Music] [Music] food [Music] the little boy was very tired but very happy [Music] the next day the squiggle didn't come but the day after [Music] and then he said it i wanna play tag [Music] but then he said it again and again [Music] and again and again and after a while the squiggle went away the squiggle didn't come the next day and the little boy thought i'm tired of having my friends go away i want them to stay i'm not gonna let that squiggle go away again i'll keep him here [Music] and he made plans to lasso the squiggle wow [Music] [Music] [Music] but things didn't work out quite as he had planned okay squiggle you can get up i'm ready to play squiggle come on squiggle i want to play now i wanna play squiggle squiggle [Music] this is no fun then an unusual thing happened for the first time he thought about someone else i guess the squiggle doesn't want to play i guess he wants to to be free he wants what unusual words maybe he'll fly away and never come back that would be awful but i have to let him go oh well it was the right thing to do i must remember to think about what others want maybe he'll come back someday [Music] blast [Music] [Music] from that moment on the little boy decided to always think about what others want he made lots of friends and he was never lonely again [Applause] [Music] so yeah yeah that's okay i'll take it um i like uh portrayals of kids in uh mid tantrum um always a fan big fan um maybe this will get us prepared for a visit to the waterworks enjoy [Music] um [Music] suppose the water all over town was suddenly cut off would certainly be mighty uncomfortable for many of us [Music] [Music] what's more we'd have a real problem in getting safe water to drink but except in emergencies we do have water to drink and to use as we need [Music] [Music] all the water for our daily needs comes from a waterworks let's go along on a visit to the waterworks and see what goes on mr burke the superintendent likes to have visitors come to his plant his plant gets its water from a lake and that's where our visit starts we're lucky we have this big lake to supply our water we've run long pipes way out into the lake what about thompson's arnold lake well every town was make use of the best water supply available some towns dig deep wells these very deep wells are called artesian wells some towns get their water from rivers another towns dam up streams to collect water this is called a reservoir sometimes the reservoirs are many miles from the town big pipes called aqueducts carry the water to the town no matter how a town gets its water supply the water has to go through the waterworks before it's fit to drink is all that water in the building no you're standing over a lot of it it's in tanks underground six million gallons of it you want to see it yeah yeah well come on let's go many water works have their tanks above ground but this plant has found it more convenient to store the water underground all right here we are now let's open this up for you there we are there are different kinds of storage tanks here to learn more about them let's go inside to the laboratory which is one of the most important parts of the waterworks here's a picture chart of what we do here first we bring the lake water into the waterworks and here in the waterworks we make the water fit to drink then we pump the safe water out into the city why can't we drink the water from the lake well lake water is full of germs and dirt that might make you sick now this is water taken right from the lake and this is water that we've treated you see the difference jim this is mr franklin from our laboratory he tests the water every few hours to see if there's any germs or impurities jim would you tell them something about your work surely every day we take samples of the raw water and the drinking water and add it to these tubes which contain a broth the germs live on if there are any germs in the water this broth becomes cloudy here are samples of water i tested yesterday as you can see the lake water is very cloudy but the drinking water is perfectly clear thank you jim we keep taking samples of water every two hours to make sure that it's safe in the waterworks we do three kinds of things first we add different kinds of chemicals and mix them up in the water to kill the germs and help take out the dirt and second we let some of the dirt settle down to the bottom and third we take out any derpis left by running the water through a filter what's a filter but i'll show you one a little while but first come along with me and we'll take this picture with us let's go see what's happening on the plant the first thing the plant does to the raw water as the water is called before has been treated is to add chemicals in exactly the right amounts by these automatic machines which are called chemical feeders this white powder is alum it helps settle out dirt and other materials that may be floating in the water see how the machine sits the powder into the water jeff wants to know if chemicals don't make the water taste funny but mr burke shows them this machine that puts inactivated charcoal a chemical that actually makes the water taste better in a room above the chemical feeders a worker refills the machines with bags of chemicals he wears a mask to keep from breathing the dust these chemicals go into so much water that there's only a tiny bit in each gallon each feeder has a horn and a red light as a danger signal this signal means that the feeder needs adjusting this yellow liquid inside the glass is chlorine which is carefully fed into the water through this machine mr burke explains that chlorine kills whatever germs may be in the water but lucille doesn't see any water she wants to know where it is mr burke explains the building is standing over big water tanks right under the floor big paddle wheels keep turning in some of the tanks called mixing tanks they stir the chemicals into the water after the chemicals have been stirred up in the mixing tanks the water goes to other tanks called settling tanks there the alum has a chance to settle out some of the dirt then the water goes to the filtering tanks and that's one of the most interesting sites in the water works mr burke explains that in this plant the filtering tanks are in a separate building called the filtering plant each filtering tank has been built in a special way if you could see underneath the water you'd find layers of sand and gravel the water slowly drips through and the sand and gravel catch the dirt and other material so that the water comes out past these tile blocks crystal clear and that's the answer to bob's question about filters the filters are kept clean by washing them does that sound odd well this is how it's done first the tank is open so that all the water already in it is slowly drained out [Applause] then clean water is forced up through the bottom of the filter [Applause] it takes up to the surface the material that's been caught in the filter [Applause] this is washed back into the lake where it came from this is the way the filters are made clean to use again this cleaning is called a backwash can you tell why the last job that the waterworks does in the plant is to pump the clean safe water out to the town huge electric pumps do this workers in the plant have many gauges to let them know just how much water is going out big gasoline motors can take over if an electric motor should break down [Applause] as the water is pumped out to the town some of it goes to a high tower for storage [Music] the water goes to the tower and to other places where it is needed through large underground pipes called mains from these mains the water goes in small underground pipes to houses and to all the places where water is used [Applause] some of it will be used by the fire department and goes to fire hydrants all through the town [Music] many businesses have a special need for water and couldn't do their work without it [Music] how does this business use water [Music] and this big street sweeper gets its water from the fire hydrants but however water is used in this town it is all clean and safe because it comes from the waterworks thanks for showing us around thank you goodbye bye [Music] gee i'm thirsty well let's get some water right from the waterworks [Music] i'm stuck eating lasagna oops sorry um that just kind of ended all right um pretty interesting though and it reminds me of when i was in high school we toured uh the water works in stanley county or in albemarle and we were looking around and we saw like a department of health c-grade and we're like oh we were pointing at it and kind of talking about it and the guy saw he said yeah and we had to work really hard to get that i'm like oh boy yikes um so anyways i've got another film set up on the telecini uh this one is let me change the name on it uh it's a generic title so i don't really it's hard for me to look up sometimes generic moral at the end of the story if if it's too obtuse that's my point so anyways uh rescue breathing here we go [Music] so every year hundreds of people die of asphyxiation from drowning electric shock and other causes far too often they die while someone who might have saved them stands by in helpless ignorance the method of artificial respiration you are about to see has been adopted by the national research council the armed forces the public health service the american red cross the ymca the boy scouts of america and many other life-saving and safety organizations it is the most efficient method known a person who has stopped breathing will die in four minutes or less death can be a matter of seconds with the victim face up go to the side of his head tilt his head back so that his throat is stretched the side of your first finger holds his chin open his mouth and clear any foreign matter your thumb goes behind the center of his front teeth your other thumb and finger pinches nostrils from above take a breath place your mouth at right angles on his and blow in each person has a different lung capacity so blow until you meet resistance which tells you enough air has entered his lungs you'll soon find just how deeply you should breathe in order to work effectively breathe in and out rhythmically once every two to five seconds the larger the victim the slower keep on until he starts breathing on his own you can approach from either side grasping the crown of his head makes it easier to tilt raising his chin gives the air a clear passage placing your thumb in the center of his lower jaw allows your thumb to fit into the corner of your own mouth so that air does not escape as you blow in pinching his nostrils from above keeps your other hand out of your way and keeps in going air from escaping placing your mouth at right angles to his and pressing tightly as you blow in also keeps air from escaping releasing his nose between breaths makes it easier for outgoing air to get out the air you blow in has enough oxygen to sustain life his mouth is the best way to get air in however if it can't be opened and if you cannot force air in through his teeth hold his lips shut and blow into his nose when the victim begins to breathe on his own you'll meet more resistance as he breathes out and none as he breathes in by glancing sidewise at his chest you can see whether it's beginning to move of its own accord don't raise your head too high as this breaks your rhythm and makes the job harder although you can easily continue for a long time it may sometimes be convenient to change off with someone else simply have the other person take his position next to you put his hands in place of yours and take over resuscitation can and should be continued even while the victim is being moved this method of artificial respiration has come most naturally to men throughout the centuries even the bible tells about it it has been chosen above all other methods by virtually every life-saving and safety organization it cannot cause injury it gets more air into the victim's lungs than any other method it is far less tiring than any other method it can be done in any position where the rescuer can get at the victim's head it is easy to do and the person doing it can always tell if and when he's getting results it needs no special equipment everyone can everyone should learn and be ready to do it asphyxiation can happen at any time anywhere the person who has stopped breathing will die in four minutes or less death can be a matter of seconds it is very probable that someday somewhere someone's life or death will depend entirely on what you do there we go thanks for joining us today um youtube wasn't paying attention to what we
