is [Applause] wow [Music] [Music] me [Music] [Applause] plus [Music] foreign wow oh well that answers some questions um i uh i took a year or two years of french in high school and i do not remember a lick uh hi i'm skip alzheimer um of 80 geeks and i have a bunch of old 60 millimeter films that i am delighting and showing you and you guys tune in during lunch maybe i don't know it depends on where you are and you comment on and absorb the vibes that i'm putting out there um and that was a french film that was part of a french uh language course i have a variety of those i can't remember how many i actually have but it's at least ten um and i haven't really sat down i mean since i don't remember french i can't really tell if there's a continuous narrative that goes throughout with the same characters and all that uh i yeah maybe one of you who've been watching this can let me know um if there's some characters that are similar uh in the meantime i have behind me a 16 millimeter uh transfer machine which we call a telecini and the telecity has a camera in it tell us the difference between a film scanner and a telesini is a telecini was designed to transfer film in real time and output a video signal so the idea would be that it would be recorded to videotape or it would be sent out via broadcast um it's kind of a film chain is like an earlier version of a telecity a scanner on the other hand is doesn't necessarily create a video out um it is creating a file uh and traditionally it was creating uh you know a high quality file uh and it would you know transfer a frame one frame every so many seconds so it was super slow and also at the time uh the data um was too big to have one one file for the entire film so each frame was its own individual file a lot of times it was a dpx or some sort of proprietary thing so scanners when you scan a film you're actually not scanning directly to video you're you're scanning to some sort of digital medium um there's an overlap now so for example the blackmagic scanner that i have not only can save files but it also has a video out so i can also output video although the quality is not as good um so there you go more than you ever really wanted to know um in the meantime so we've got a film that i haven't seen um i have no information about it in the database uh so uh here we go it's uh it didn't have to happen enjoy [Music] they'd say it was an accident but the men knew and i knew that i had killed him our mill was an average one the usual machines and the usual sort of men there was max and the band saw and wilson boring his square holes and lucky williams operating the rip saw as usual without a guard williams didn't like guards said he worked better without he was inclined to be careless that way the superintendent had to keep warning him but it was hard to make lucky understand my work's all right isn't it he used to say and it was beside everybody liked lucky hey lucky what do you know we got us a baby three o'clock this morning no kidding that's great bob now you really got trouble boy you can say that again i don't see it smoke period give me a cigar thanks i'll settle for a cigarette old armon trache operated the shaper he worked to a different plan everything always clean and in good condition you'd not catch him working without the guard not anymore and there was len ritchie on the jointer as a rule he was average careful jointer was a bit safer perhaps than some of the other machines still she was designed to cut [Music] [Music] now look man i don't care what your work is it's time we all took more care around our machines jointers is good a place to start as any look at it about as simple as you can get isn't it but it's got knives and they're darn well meant to cut len was jointing this piece of wood just near the end the knife struck this knot the board broke and len's hand slipped off onto the cutter head now he's in the hospital could be worse at least he hasn't lost any fingers just the tip be laid up long doc says several weeks unless complications set in that's tough don't worry kid he'll get compensation 75 of his pay not bad for no work i doubt whether you'd like it mike he could be off for 10 weeks if so he'll only lose several hundred dollars along with some sleep some weight the ends of his fingers i don't think any of you would like it anybody touched this since lynn nobody asked touch it bill then it's perfectly clear he wasn't using the lego mutton guard which would have helped to prevent the accident this thing's designed to cover the cutter head and he wasn't using the push block even if the wood does kick back there's still the block between the fingers and the cutter head len was asking for trouble but let nearly always use the block yeah nearly always well you men know as well as i do that it's the very time when you don't use the guards when something happens even so he was lucky this is the old square cutter head i had it replaced with a cylindrical one last year the cylindrical one fills the table opening no matter what the position of the blades but this one if a man's hand went into this he'd lose it halfway up to the elbow i guess that's what you'd call being short-handed [Laughter] you're not the one to be making jokes lucky come here nice and tidy guard's good and safe up here too this is no ornament lucky and a ripsaw is no toy this guard does you the favor of keeping your hands off that saw and another thing that rim travels at about 200 feet a second now suppose you're feeding a board through the saw grabs and throws it back that means this piece of wood starts back at about the same speed so a hunk of wood hits you going the speed of a bullet it tears into your guts and if you don't die you're all washed up as far as working anymore okay bob now this is meant to help guard against kickback too you see these dogs they slide with the wood but dig in the second it starts back the splitter here keeps the wood from binding and another thing that helps lucky okay always work with your saw high out of the table as far as you'll go now look you've got it raised about two inches right yeah sure well the general direction being traveled by the teeth as they cut now is this way back towards you that's the way she'll try to kick the wood you've got to push against them now when the teeth come into contact they're going almost straight down pushing the work toward the table consequently the chance of a kickback is lesson say it should be easier too sure why well the saw is pushing the wood down not back so it should be easier to feed that's right bob try it lucky with the guard let me know what you think sounds like it might be easier at that and safer don't forget the guard it's just as easy to be careful before as after harmon here can tell you that he's right lucky i used to be pretty careless myself till one day when i was just him in a corner [Music] and of course i was laid off for quite some time had lots of time to think about it but when i get back to work i made a few changes took my shaper apart and checked the knives they were worn too short the collars couldn't get a good grip that's what happened to me the knives got too loose i checked the rest of my knives threw out all the ones that were getting short did another thing turn the knives over so that they undercut my work instead of top cutting like i used to this way there was always the word between me and the knives then i made me a guard good one held the word snug now if anything slips my hand hits the guard ever since then i've had the safe machine that was 15 years ago i haven't had an accident since and i aim to stay that way things went well after that there was a new man filling in for len ritchie on the jointer he was doing okay always use the guard and push block even lucky williams was doing better [Music] yeah much better but habit is mighty hard to break he was soon back to his old ways vast and careless but lucky figured that saw with his name on it hadn't been made all a man had to do is keep a good grip a steady hand and a keen eye that's all uh this i knew then that i lucky williams had killed a man sure as though i'd done it with my own hands and it didn't have to happen um i had not seen that film before i did not know what was coming um that was nut uh and it's a good film it still holds up man even though it's black and white and everybody's canadian um yeah holy cow yeah so i hope that didn't put anybody off on their lunch uh i hope nobody was having a uh chocolate sundae with uh chocolate sauce um but yikes man anyways uh all right how am i gonna rebound from that one that was something um yeah let's learn about water for farm and city [Music] you know about water don't you it's something you drink cool and refreshing something you cook with clear and bubbling something you wash in clean and sparkly water can be fun [Applause] [Music] [Applause] oh [Music] water can be troubled disaster if its power is controlled water serves as well water power makes electricity so electricity powers america's farms and industries water is industry's most important raw material hey but water can be bad polluted fouled by man himself when properly managed water provides homes and food for wildlife [Music] so yes water serves us in many ways especially in helping to grow the food we eat water for both farm and city comes from the sky most of it falls as snow or rain the water collects in thousands of natural drainage basins called watersheds watersheds as small as the forest brook and as large as the mississippi river basin [Music] nature takes care of the water that falls on well-managed rangelands or protected forests nature's cover cushions its fog drains it off slowly and safely but where there are no trees or grass that's a different story the farmer rancher or forester who takes care of the land also takes care of the water the two go together his welfare depends on it and so does the welfare of us all the water supply for our cities relies largely on how well our forests our farmland and our rangeland are managed let's look in on some american farmers and ranchers say in colorado in iowa washington state maryland which sometimes gets more than its share of water [Music] let's start in the yakima valley in washington at the apple orchard and home of this fruit farmer it's a growing country with friendly people but there's not much rainfall having to buy all the water he turns into apples he's become an expert on managing and conserving water farmers here look at the distant mountain and see the water they'll be using their reservoir in our national forest is the snow high on the peaks snow that melts gradually and turns into bubbling streams on the way down the long slopes [Music] a lot of it is stored for power and for irrigation men guide its flow they channel its path they even board through the mile long core of a mountain to speed it on its way mile upon mountain mile they bring water on an errand of life-giving they bring it at last to the very soil itself and snow blossoms into fruit [Music] thousands of miles to the east another struggle with water is going on along the low banks of the pocomoke river on the eastern shore of maryland here as on many other flat lowlands of the country flooding rains pile up water farmers have to cope with it sometime every year but the crops here don't drown because this man gets rid of his extra water safely he has a working conservation plan and through carefully designed drainage ditches drains away just the right amount of water it moves into larger ditches and then through major channels excess water moves to the sea now this land provides tomatoes and other good things for the nation's tables in the midwest the very center of the american bread basket is another farm and another farmer he raises cattle [Music] and feeds them the corn oats and grass he grows on his place you'd think water would be no problem in the heart of some of the country's best farmland that's what this farmer thought for a long time then he begins noticing things after hard rains he notices where his cornrows run straight downhill so does his topsoil he sees what a heavy rain can do to the peaceful little stream on his farm a stream that feeds a river one of many streams that turn a river into a rushing destroyer [Music] he notices too that the flooding stream left soil in its wake his soil washed from gullies ripped out of his own farm [Music] and he looks about him at the conservation work of some of his neighbors and learns a lesson soon he has a conservation plan working on his place every acre of it to save soil and water you notice one of the practices right away contour strip cropping and so when it's haying time on this farm the whole family has to help there's so much hay to get in [Music] no farmer in the nation faces a harder conservation job than the rancher for out where the west begins the water leaves off [Music] here in southeast colorado every drop of water is precious most of the year there just isn't enough water in the purgatory river and the water of the frioli creek that runs right through this ranch is so alkaline the cattle can't drink it so for some of the water for his stock this rancher has to go straight down 600 feet or more that makes well water in this country pretty expensive man-made ponds catch the rain and snow that falls when beef cattle are turned into good steaks it's because some farmer or rancher has turned soil and water into grass to make good cattle in the summertime he drives his cattle up onto the high mesa in search of grass watered by melting snows this spreads his grazing gives his winter range a rest and a chance for recovery and all this is part of a program of wise land use a program that assures farm and city alike of dependable supplies of water and so it goes across the country the managers of public lands and their partners the american farmers are the first guardians of the nation's water supply by working together with the technical and financial help of local state and federal governments watershed protection is helping the rest of us downstream they are helping to prevent water from running wild helping us to keep silt out of rivers helping to ensure enough good water for living for firefighting for steel enough water in the right place at the right time through the conservation of land and water life-giving water for the farms and cities of america today and enough water for her people tomorrow so all of this is uh fascinating but it's also very very important now in california because of the drought conditions um in colorado uh so you know it's fascinating to look at this and then kind of realize like oh yeah this is kind of a big deal this is a big issue um and you know what is the water being used for is it almonds is that the best way we should be using it and stuff like that it's kind of interesting um i should say uh thank you amy amy got me some coffee uh and you can support us with some delicious somebody is in eastern europe or is claiming these and making it hard and have a pretty severe um thing where they doesn't it it just doesn't show up a warning it actually like stops things so hopefully there won't be long running implications for this um i'll see if i can start and stop it on
