so so so so so so so so so everybody i'm skipped alzheimer and welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show um i like that little tacked on the end uh for that last film uh about chile and um that came from the orgone archive which is a collection of films in based in pittsburgh pennsylvania and we scanned a bunch of their stuff and ultimately that was part of the mogul brothers collection which was a film library based in new york city that you could rent so it's a wide variety of stuff and it's all educational so it is um stuff that might have been used in schools but really was just made for general interest those early educational films were not meant to be shown in schools because schools originally most of those were made on 35 millimeter and distributed on 35 and most schools did not have access to 35 millimeter projectors um it was only after probably late 20s mid to late 20s that um when sixteen millimeter projectors were uh beginning to appear that schools started supporting it but it wasn't really until after world war ii that there was this boon of um schools almost every school had a 16 millimeter projector because of world war ii army navy surplus there were a bunch of projectors that were available and they just basically got released to schools much to the chagrin of impro and bell and howell and other folks that's history um we geek out here at av geeks we watch old 16 millimeter films and then sometimes we we talk about them uh this next film is a nasa film it's about a moment in history enjoy [Music] april 9 1963 president kennedy empowered by an act of congress is to proclaim sir winston churchill an honorary citizen of the united states the ceremony will take place in the rose garden of the white house in washington dc by means of the relay communication satellite this memorable event will be instantly televised to sir winston's home in london and viewers throughout europe preparations to transmit and receive this historic broadcast had begun early in the day in the center of italy 70 miles to the east of rome is the valley of fuchino [Music] [Music] [Music] over the alps in france at the edge of normandy is the village of plymouth [Music] ah [Music] across the channel at the south tip of england is goon hilly downs in cornwall [Music] england ready here the hours go by in europe the stations check and recheck their equipment in the united states near andover maine at nutley new jersey at the goddard space flight center near washington and in new york other links in the relay network are standing by to carry the special broadcast scheduled for 3 p.m eastern standard time an hour internationally designated in greenwich time as 200 zulu at the mark the time will be 1951 zulu stand by bark this is new jersey standing by and ready stand by kill film and take one you have just seen films of the launch of a relay communication satellite on december 13th 1962 this was followed by animation which showed how this national aeronautics and space administration satellite is used to re-transmit signals across the atlantic in the past five months relay has orbited the earth exactly 909 times it has transmitted two-way telephone calls high-speed data facsimile and teletype communications between the united states south america and europe relay has also carried a number of television programs on a one-way path from europe to north america and from north america to europe relay was built by rca for the national aeronautic and space administration and is a project of nasa's goddard space flight center in greenbelt maryland at goddard the relay broadcasts are directed by a communications satellite operations center i'd like the tour group to pay particular attention to the activity in this room this is a communication satellite operations center it's known as comsock the gentleman you see at work are spacecraft controllers they're in charge of the relay project there on the side you'll note the spacecraft status board it shows that relay has been commanded to monitor its systems and report on its operating condition how much more time is uh well not very long andover is ready so are england france and italy not least taking class two data right now tom stock this is comic-con looks okay here at the mark the time will be 1954 zulu stand by mark comcon this is comsock switch transponder number two on the order has been sent to relay to turn on one of its two receiver transmitters after this transponder is reported in a go condition the final step is for the andover station to transmit tv to boon hilly downs in england well i see they're getting ready for the final check let's see how it goes come stop this is [Music] new jersey receiving instructions from the goddard space center is relay communications control known in short as com con com con is housed in two mobile trailers telemetry what's the status of the class one energy data at this time class one's limited data appears to be absorbable recording cameras ready [Applause] and now from andover maine inside a protective dome the giant horn of the american telephone and telegraph company beams the program to relay roger receiving test pattern from washington do we use it for a transmission test in just 60 seconds if all goes well relay will retransmit the signals back down to earth and an historic event will have begun at the mark time will be 1959 zulu stand by mark hello we have a red light on transponder abc picture's still coming over roger disregard the no-go reception is okay five four three the commonwealth old friends of uh sir winston led by mr baruch ladies and gentlemen we gather today at a moment unique in the history of the united states this is the first time that the united states congress has solemnly resolved that the president of the united states shall proclaim an honorary citizenship for the citizen of another country and in joining me to perform this happy duty the congress gives mr winston churchill a distinction shared only with the marcus de lafayette in proclaiming him an honorary citizen i only propose a formal recognition of the place he has long since won in the history of freedom and in the affections of my and now his fellow countrymen whenever and wherever tyranny threatened he has always championed liberty facing firmly towards the future he has never forgotten the past serving six monarchs of his native great britain he has served all men's freedom and dignity in the dark days and darker nights when england stood alone and most men save englishmen despaired of england's life he mobilized the english language and sent it into battle the incandescent quality of his words illuminated the courage of his countrymen indifferent himself to danger the servant of the future now therefore are john f kennedy president of the united states of america under the authority contained in an act of the 88th congress to hereby declare sir winston churchill an honorary citizen of the united states of america in witness whereof i have here and to set my hand and cause the seal of the united states of america to be affected done at the city of clearest ever seen via transatlantic relay so winston observed the program at his london home and was deeply moved [Music] so it's a little bit of history uh for about two things about satellite uh communications and being able to do a live broadcast uh to another part of the world and also about making winston churchill a u.s citizen um yeah fascinating love it okay so i have behind me a film transfer machine that we call a telecini this is a german machine that i bought new some time ago probably 12 13 14 years ago um i bought it to digitize a bunch of advertising well i bought it to digitize my stuff but also to digitize a bunch of advertising for the duke university uh ad views project where we did i think it was like 40 000 commercials 10 000 commercials maybe it was ten thousand i i can't remember brain anyways um so it's old it's it's a standard definition machine uh has a standard definition camera in it um but it's it's great for doing these broadcasts so uh that's what we're gonna do so we're gonna watch a film called jump enjoy [Music] for most people rope jumping has long been associated with novelty acts or as a game little girls played long ago [Music] rope jumping today has broken through all the old stereotypes now it's part of a challenging world of fun and fitness that's open to everyone [Music] athletes like dave parker of the pittsburgh pirates fred brown of the seattle supersonics and randy white of the dallas cowboys use rope jumping to sharpen their agility timing and overall fitness but they're not the only ones there's bernie coppell doc on loveboat paramedics from pasco county florida and many many others [Music] and best of all the fundamentals of rope jumping are easy to learn [Music] you don't need a lot of equipment to get into rope jumping soft-soled athletic shoes like you'd use for tennis running or basketball are recommended [Music] lightweight loose-fitting shirts slacks shorts or gym clothes are best to keep hair out of your eyes a headband can be worn the only equipment you'll need is a proper length rope to determine the proper length stand on the center of the rope feet together the handles of the rope should reach the armpits but just how easy is it to learn rope jumping well anyone can do it the best proof is to show you by demonstrating 16 of the most basic stunts or skills let's start with the side swing stand with your feet together twirl the rope to the left side of your body keeping your hands together now twirl the rope to the right side keeping your hands together this is how it looks at normal speed to do the basic bounce start with the rope behind you touching your heels swing the rope forward over your head jump over the rope on each continuous turn while keeping your feet ankles and knees together jump and land on the balls of your feet jump one or two inches off the floor rotate hands in a four or five inch circle put them together and you have the double side swing and jump keeping your hands together twirl the rope on one side of the body and then the other on the third turn open your arms and jump over the rope keep your feet together throughout the sequence for the single side swing and jump twirl the rope to one side of your body keeping your hands together on the next turn open your arms and the rope and jump the third turn is on the opposite side of your body holding both hands together open your arms and jump over the rope on the fourth turn for the skier keep your knees and feet together and jump from side to side the bell is done by alternately jumping forward and backward on each continuous turn of the rope for the side straddle jump with your feet spread apart about shoulder width on the next jump return to the basic bounce position to do the forward straddle make a forward stride jump with your feet about 12 inches apart on the next jump reverse the stride position of your feet by making a scissors like movement to do the straddle cross jump to the side straddle position on the next jump cross your legs for the wounded duck jump to a position with your toes and knees touching on the next jump spread your knees and toes so that your heels touch keep your knees bent in both landing positions the crisscross is an arm movement skill cross your arms as the rope approaches your feet and jump the rope while in the crossed arm position on the next turn of the rope uncross your arms and do a basic bounce jump to do a full turn first do a side swing to the right follow the rope with your body continue side swings until a full turn has been completed then finish with a basic bounce for heel to heel hop on the right foot and touch the left heel forward on the next turn to the rope hop to the left foot and touch the right heel forward to do the toe to toe hop on the right foot and touch the left toe forward on the next turn of the rope hop on the left foot and touch the right toe forward for a forward 180 do a side swing to your right and let your body follow until a half turn is completed open your arms and a basic bounce for a backward 180 jump backwards over the rope at the top of the ropes arc extend both arms backwards and make a half turn of the body then complete the jump now let's see what it looks like as a choreographed group routine [Music] this is a sample of what you can do with a few basic rope jumping skills the possibilities for a fine performance are as unlimited as your imagination [Music] [Music] it's easy to start a rope jumping program in your school the american heart association offers a complete curriculum guide for the educator take a rope add some instruction and encouragement and you've got the ingredients for a great performance and the benefits last a lifetime you're on there did you huh let's see if i have any info on it in uh my database no i don't wow this is a this is a really great film uh i'm gonna look it up on uh worldcat worldcat is a website that lists library holdings on um lots of different places but also has listings for um films and video jump let's see it's about skydiving and i have a film about drug use called jump i don't think i have it wow so i'm not sure what year this is i mean we're all guessing like early 80s um the pac-man shirt was a guide for us uh bernie coppell who played doc on the love boat was another guide but uh yeah um yeah we got to premiere that together i had not seen that film sometimes these films that have simple titles we just don't watch uh because we just you know our right hand up open the won't you be my partner now the next part goes left hand round there now let's take all the steps we know from the beginning you must remember to keep time to the beat won't you be my partner now there are two more parts to this dance watch and i'll show them to you now let's take the dance from the beginning and let's sing the song that goes along with it are we to sing because audio was off but the audio um wasn't totally sync to begin with um this was a cued speech uh film so something to help uh people with um impaired hearing to start learning how to read lips so that's why everything is so you know everybody's enunciating and everybody is um talking slow and the pacing is slow and um this was a university of southern california and i think that's right and also um i have another film by them called barbrish new shoes so there you go all right so behind me i have another film queued up this is a film i've shown before but this is a brand new copy of it and i'm hoping that the quality of this is going to be better than what i currently have um [Music] this is part of the inside out series um i showed a film by the same people kind of the self-incorporated film i showed yesterday but this one is the i think personally one of the best um inside outs uh and it's it speaks to it's definitely 70s and i showed this the last time i showed this was part of a show called free range kids which is basically kids going out in the world going wild just like i remember um not sitting at home watching television playing video games um on their phones like going wild and the reason why i like this film is because it shows a lot of really bad behavior and that's one of the the traps and pitfalls of having an educational film that shows bad behavior is that you might be introducing uh interesting ideas to kids about bad behavior even if you show at the end uh the bad results what happens from the bad behavior it doesn't matter you're planting seeds and so this one is planting some seriously crazy seeds so this is i have not seen this film and i'm hoping that again the quality is better than the last copy that i have um so pretty it but i ain't gonna die you're gonna be in 25 pieces at night oh look are you sure you want to do it i told you time and time again all right maybe he's gonna make it he's getting close [Music] mickey that was a big area when you went flying over that ramp i didn't think you were gonna make it is it scarier to get caught or to get hurt i think it's a lot scary to get caught because i almost gotta make her do something really hard no more drinky little dares this time closer it's gotta be a good one let's ever go out and jump in front of a car and stop it not just any old car a volkswagen bus that's best that's the it's too dangerous to go out in front of the street and do that dare mike and eggs if you didn't do it there if you didn't why do i have to you think we didn't do a dare we we practically did the best one when i pushed ace up on that roof and then i dropped the word blue oh yeah the president dropped it on me and then that second one hey wow can you sam yeah he's getting up on the roof what hey what's going on up there hey hey you kids come come out here get the crap on you are you going to take the dare or aren't you no cece all you have to do is step in front of that volkswagen bus and stop it well that's too hard for her it'll be easy it's a daniel's first i could get her to in a daylight why'd that be danger in a good dare and anyone here has done it there so now you gotta do one no it's too dangerous look either she's gonna do a dare or not and that's the best dare we thought of yet yeah let's get out of the street yes remember you gotta do it we're not even in the game all right come on now all i have to do is just jump out in front of the next bus that comes by i don't think we ought to let her do this it's too dangerous look why is she supposed to be any different hey look here comes the bus it's coming fast go go go go go go go go go go go [Music] what do you want me to do get killed or something come on why why do you ever have to do this stupid thing because look everybody else here has done dares because i could get killed everyone in order to be my friend they both and there's not to be different i'd get a deer so you're comments were commenting about aspects of this you know whether we grew up during this time or we grew up after this time like how our peers interacted and ultimately there's a film about peer pressure but man it's awesome nonetheless and so the other copy i have is faded it's scratched it has splices and i've shown it because i love the film and this film is the color is really good um you
